(sirens blaring) (upbeat rock music)

- [Caitlin Voiceover] It's cool living in the city.

It's crowded, loud, people moving everywhere.

It's a great place to be alone.

- Hey, watch it!

- [Caitlin Voiceover] Of course, every once in awhile,

somebody's gotta get in your face.

(upbeat rock music)

♪ Reality's imaginary ♪

♪ To thinking mystified by you till dawn ♪

- Romeo.

- [Caitlin Voiceover] My camera.

It's the only way I can make the world my own.

That's all right with me, though.

Pictures stay, people don't.

It all works out perfectly.

One thing the city teaches you

is that no one's gonna give you anything.

- Pardon me. - Excuse me.

- [Caitlin Voiceover] So you gotta take it.

- Caitlin!

How's it going, girl?

- Joseph.

What are you doing here, man?

This ain't your regular spot.

- Don't I know it?

Ain't no one this side recognize me.

I can't get enough together for a lousy hotdog.

- What happened?

- Cops told me to move, say I was an eyesore.

(Caitlin scoffing)

- Imagine that.

Well, I'll catch you later.

(Joseph giggling)

- Thank you.

(bell ringing)

- Yes, no straggling, children.

Hurry, hurry!

(bell ringing)

That girl.

(upbeat funk music)

- Another winner.

But $5 says you can't do it again.

- Nah.

I'm done.

- Oh, come on, Jack.

Double or nothing.

- [Boy] Yeah Jack, come on.

- I'll give you 10 to one odds if you spot her.

It's easy money.

All you gotta do is keep your eyes open.

- [Boy] Jack.

Bro, do it.

Come on.

Easy money.

- All right, I'm in.

(boys chuckling)

- All right.

Keep your eyes on the prize, guys,

and spot the queen.

Here she is.

I'm like giving money away.

(suspenseful funk music)

- [Nun] That would be enough!

- [Boy] Come on!

- [Caitlin] Get back here!

- Betting again, Caitlin.

(Caitlin giggling nervously)

- Is it time for school already?

- It most certainly is.

(upbeat rock music)

♪ Standing on my tail ♪

- Caitlin, you know gambling is ill*gal.

- It wasn't really gambling.

(nun scoffing)

- [Nun] And why not?

- Because I couldn't lose.

- Caitlin, you've only been here two months

and every teacher has come to see me about you.

- I'm challenging.

- Oh yes you are.

Truancy, fighting, disregard for authority,

and now, running a casino in my school?

(nun sighing)

Caitlin, what am I supposed to do with you?

- What do you say we just keep this between us

and I promise never to do it again?

- I could do that.

- Good call, Sister.

Well, I better be headed back to class.

- I could also see you in detention today after school.

- Come on, Sister.

- Don't be late!

(upbeat rock music)

- The basic story of Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet"

focuses on authority,

the use and abuse of it.

Ah, Miss Seeger.

So nice of you to grace us with your presence.

Sleep in late?

- Actually, I had to discuss school policy with Sister.

- Sure you're right.

Juliet's parents told her that she

could not see Romeo under any circumstances.

Were they right?

(school bell ringing)

- [Boy] Lunch time!

"Romeo and Juliet" essays due tomorrow!

If they're not finished, you will be.

- [Boy] What's up, boys?

- Caitlin.

I'm particularly interested in reading yours.

- Great.

(upbeat country music)

- [Griffen] This is so cool, dad!

It's the most intense thing that's ever hit High River.

- [Dad] It's not cool, Griff.

It's dangerous.

- Okay guys.

There we go.

Easy does it now.

(alpaca groaning)

This is only gonna take a second.

(alpaca groaning)

- Mom!

Mom!

(alpaca growling)

Mom, what are you doing down there?

- Griffen!

You know better than to yell around the animals.

- We've got wolves.

- A wolf.

- You don't know that for sure.

It could just be the leader.

- What are you guys talking about?

- Dave Warner called.

Found one of his sheep dead.

Said it was pretty torn up.

- That's unusual.

Strange for them to come down this low.

There's more than enough elk up there

for them to feed on.

- Dori, keep the animals in the barn

till I found out what's going on.

- Good idea, dad.

We should probably cancel school, too.

(alpaca groaning)

- I think we'll wait awhile before we do that.

- Sounds like it could be rabid.

- Let's hope not.

(upbeat country music)

(wolf howling)

(horses neighing) (suspenseful music)

(wolf growling)

(suspenseful music)

(wolf panting)

(suspenseful music)

(intense music) (horse neighing)

(upbeat rock music)

- Let's see.

Samson, Seel.

Here it is, Seeger.

Nice work.

You got a good eye.

- Thanks.

- That'll be $47.50, tax included.

You know, if you keep at it, you could do real good.

Your work's not the usual everybody say cheese stuff.

- It's a little expensive.

- Yeah, well you asked for rush service.

You're short.

- Well, I'll give you the rest tomorrow.

- Good.

That's when you come and pick up the photos.

- But it's for my homework.

I need them for tomorrow.

- Sorry.

(man clearing throat)

- But Mr. Martin, I'm one of your best customers.

- Look, I'm not running a charity here!

- [Man] Photos for Johnson.

(suspenseful music)

- Jack.

Hey man!

I want my money!

Nobody cheats me.

- Hey, hey.

(car horn honking)

(tires screeching)

(crash)

(woman yelling)

- [Woman] Oh my God!

- [Mr. Martin] I don't believe this!

- Oh no.

(woman groaning)

- [Mr. Martin] The cameras.

What'd you do?

- [Man] Hey, it's not my fault!

It was that girl!

- Hey, Cait!

Get back here!

You won't get away with this!

I'm calling the cops!

(dreary rock music)

(couple yelling)

- [Woman] That's enough!

(couple yelling)

(bright flute music)

- Here we go again.

- It's about time.

I thought I told you be home early, hmm?

- Yeah, well I got a little tied up afterschool.

- Caitlin!

Caitlin, that you?

Herb, that better be her.

That social worker woman's gonna be here any minute now.

(Caitlin sighing)

- Get out of those clothes and go put on something decent.

This is important.

- Yeah, well, thanks for asking.

I wonder if all kids have it this good.

(bright trumpet music)

(birds chirping)

- [Biker 1] Yeah!

- [Biker 2] Whoa!

- [Biker 3] Whoa!

- [Biker 4] Woo hoo!

- [Biker 1] Yeah!

(upbeat rock music)

- [Biker 1] Whoa!

(upbeat rock music)

- [Biker 4] Yeah!

What a rush!

- Man, that was awesome.

- I told you you'd like it.

So you ready for the bone crusher now?

- No way.

That jump defies the laws of physics.

If I go off that jump, I'll fly through the air,

which point gravity will take over.

The impact will cause something to break, like my bones.

- Yo.

Check it out.

- He's kind of cute.

(girls giggling)

- I feel secure enough with myself that

I don't really have to prove anything.

(boy breathing heavily)

(girls giggling)

- Oh, I think you do.

- Yeah.

Okay.

(upbeat funk music)

- Griff Man, go for it.

- Let's go, Griff Man!

- [Boy] Let's go buddy!

(upbeat rock music)

(Griffen yelling)

- [Griffen] Uh oh!

- Whoa! - He got some air.

- You think he'll make it?

- Not a chance.

Pull the handlebars back!

(upbeat rock music)

(Griffen yelling)

(girls giggling)

- Griff Man, you all right?

- Come on, buddy.

Say something.

- Physics won.

- [Boy] That was great, man.

I never thought you could do it.

- That was unbelievable.

You almost did a back flip.

- Really?

How high was I?

- Higher than anybody I've seen.

- He didn't get that much air.

I went higher.

- I really grabbed some air?

- I thought you got some good stuff.

I thought it was pretty good.

(dreamy music)

(upbeat music)

- Case mumber 326-71B, Caitlin Seeger.

- Yes ma'am.

- Residing with the Willis' for

a period of 10 weeks.

- That's correct.

- Well, how are you doing?

- It's been going very well.

- Not you, Mr. Willis.

Caitlin?

- I'm so happy, I could hurl.

- She's fit right in.

- This is the sixth home in two years, Caitlin.

You have been difficult to place.

I have a series of questions to ask you.

Number one, how would you rate your ability

to accept guidance?

- Satisfactory.

Question two, never.

Question three, sometimes.

Question four, excellent.

Now I'll answer their questions.

How is she behaving?

Wonderful.

How is she in school?

She's an excellent student.

- Caitlin dear, this isn't the time.

- How is she adapting?

Great.

She's just like our very own.

But even better, she comes with a check.

(sad violin music)

- Tea, Mrs. Jennings?

- [Foster Mom] I've never been so embarrassed!

She's out of here!

We can get another one!

- [Foster Dad] So early?

Come on!

Not a big month!

- [Foster Mom] Then maybe you should go get a job!

- [Foster Dad] And lose my disability?

You crazy, huh?

- [Foster Mom] Man, I'm sick of hearing you say that!

Sick of it!

- Mom.

(couple arguing)

- [Foster Dad] You should get out there and do something!

- [Foster Mom] You're a bum!

I do everything around here!

Everything!

- [Caitlin Voiceover] Why'd you go?

(couple arguing)

(upbeat funk music)

- And it could be said that "Romeo and Juliet"

is the basis for all love stories who follow.

You're late.

Again.

- Sorry.

Traffic.

- Well, I happen to know you don't drive.

(students giggling)

Class, please pass forward your reports

on "Romeo and Juliet".

- [Intercom] Caitlin Seeger to the principal's office.

Caitlin Seeger to the principal's office immediately.

(students giggling)

- Here's my report.

- Caitlin.

The reports were supposed to be written.

Now, why can't you be like the other kids?

- Maybe I missed some of the lessons.

(melancholy piano music)

- No.

It's because you're not like the other kids.

- Caitlin, come in, please.

This is Officer Maggert.

- Yeah, I know.

Hey Pete.

Long time no see.

- Not long enough.

I thought you said you were gonna stay out of trouble.

- I have.

- Nova Photos?

- Come on.

I was gonna pay Martin back.

Really.

I thought I told him that.

- You wrecked two dozen of the guy's cameras.

- It was an accident!

I'm sure the car insurance will pay for it.

Fine.

I'll do community service.

I'll mow the school yarn or something, I don't know.

- Caitlin, this is serious.

Now you know our policy.

Three strikes and you're out.

- But I only have two.

- Look, I tried to get this Martin guy

to let you work off your debt to him,

but he wasn't having any,

so I gotta charge you with the theft.

- I'm expelled?

(sad violin music)

- [Officer Pete] Watch your head.

(dramatic music)

(upbeat rock music)

♪ I'm no good at goodbyes ♪

- [Caitlin Voiceover] This city has thousands of people

committing crimes every day

and hundreds of donut shops.

Between the two, you'd think police would have their hands,

or mouths full.

But somehow, they've always got time for me.

- Hey.

You sit here, you stay here, and you be quiet here.

- Can I breathe here?

- Gum, here.

Thanks.

Wait here.

- Have a seat, Caitlin.

Let's see.

Truancy, vandalism, theft.

A car wreck?

- It wasn't exactly my fault.

- And who's fault was it, exactly?

- I'm a product of my environment.

Let's see if the next home you place me in

can't have a little more cash laying around.

- I am all out of homes, Caitlin.

- Well, all right.

I'll go back to live with the Willis',

but you gotta tell them to let me

have a little more spending money.

- They don't feel that they can

give you all that you need right now.

- Okay, so they don't want me either.

So what now?

I'm too young to go to jail.

- Yes.

But not Youth Correctional.

- Juvie hall?

No way.

- Did you know that you had family?

- Yeah.

I've had exactly 10 in the last six years.

- Real family.

Your mother had a cousin.

- A cousin?

How come no one ever told me?

- We didn't know until a friend of yours told us.

- Who?

- Sister Bernadette.

She had some former students in High places.

She made a few calls and they located a relative.

- Okay.

So what?

Who is he?

- She.

She sent you a ticket.

She wants you to go live with them.

- Yeah?

- Yeah.

In Montana.

- Montana?

No way.

Judge, you can't send me way out there.

Those people are weird out in the stakes.

- Montana or Youth Correctional?

Oh, and Caitlin.

You don't need another petty theft on your record.

(Caitlin sighing)

(sad piano music)

(upbeat country music)

- Griff, it's simple.

Let me run it by you one more time.

My mother and her grandmother were sisters,

so that makes Caitlin your second cousin, and she's 14, too.

- We've invited her to stay with us.

- For how long?

- Griff, she's gonna live with us.

- What?

Wait, you're letting a stranger move in with us?

- Honey, we're the only family that she has.

It's gonna be great.

It's gonna be like having a sister.

- But I don't want a sister.

The one kid, two parent thing has worked just fine so far.

- Sweetheart, this is gonna be a weird adjustment

for all of us.

- Dad, how could you agree to this?

Another female in the house?

We'll be outnumbered.

- Actually, we'll be even.

- And she's a juvenile delinquent.

What if she steals my stuff, or worse?

Haven't you watched those cop shows on TV?

- Griffen, she's just had some tough times.

- Wearing braces is tough times.

Letting a girl move in and one with a criminal past,

that's just frightening.

Why do parents have to make everything so difficult?

- Griff.

Griff!

(upbeat rock music)

- Caitlin, I wanted to say goodbye.

And I wanted to give you this.

Mr. Luna showed me your report on "Romeo and Juliet".

You're a talented girl, Caitlin.

Life if there for you, if you want it.

- [Intercom] Bus number 47 will now depart.

- Welcome aboard, young lady.

High River, huh?

Did you know that cattle outnumber people six to one?

(bus driver chuckling)

- Really?

- [Caitlin Voiceover] Some choice,

jail or a place where cows outnumber people.

I can't believe I have a cousin.

Why didn't anyone tell me?

Why didn't she find me?

Why do I care?

It's never any different.

New place, new family, new rules,

always the same suspicions.
