amazing scaly animals

i had the most amazing dream i had

feathers

no scales and i was flying

somewhere over the rainbow but when i

went to land

hi how you doing i got the sneezes

so and there i was scary old me again

and all the birds were laughing and then

i woke up

oh now so you woke up on the wrong side

of the bed then

and now i can't find my morning paper

here it comes

where oh there i'll bet you don't treat

your furry customers like that

when you look at this croc shock

snake bites dog scales in jail who

writes this stuff

it must have been a bad scale day it's

anti-scale is what it is

i've had it is a typically

vicious as this poor defenseless fluffy

check

must now discover to its peril hey this

just isn't fair we can't help being

scaly

why can't people understand reptiles are

people too

ah i like your scales

makes me so mad i can just just

just sing well if you insist

if you wanna be safe and sound

some protection must be found

to help you stay

some alive take flight

or only come out at night

and that works fine for

them

cats and dogs have tails

all sailboats have sails

but a lizard like me henry

chameleons are my friends

who change color now and then

a warmth

turtles and snakes all

reptiles for goodness sakes

scales to cover

ourselves

for me

i like myself the way that i am

so i'm gonna tell the world

scale day so i have to get the message

celebrate scale day spread the word

hug a lizard reptiles have feelings too

you know

henry what's that wire behind your car

that's the power cable for my speakers

uh oh bad idea

henry stop what

i'll tell you what's wrong with scales

they ache

nothing's perfect henry but scales are

one of the best protective coverings

there is

they're hard wearing protect against

insect bites and they come in all shapes

and sizes

they also look neat but they're not the

most flexible things in the world

it's like wearing armor but scales are

waterproof which comes in handy for

swimming lizards

so when are we going to see a lizard

lifeguard on tv

uh that might take some time but lizards

aren't the only scaly animals

right beneath the surface what do you

find a big

ugly fish that's an amazonian pure raku

and guess what it's covered in scales

right fish were actually the first

vertebrates to have scales

no way you mean us lizards didn't get

there first nope and fish scales are

each separate

unlike reptiles your scales are all

linked together to form a continuous

skin

at least my swimsuits are one piece even

one mammal has developed scales

it's an anteater called a pangolin i

call that an artichoke with legs

henry be nice okay i guess some mammals

have got good taste

we're going to prove that scaly animals

aren't scary at all

so let's not waste any more time and

start by introducing our guests

obviously having a bad scale day and you

do you think a lack of fur or feathers

contributes to the negative

image of scaly animals hmm

camera shy eh am i the only lizard with

any personality around here

and what about you sir what's the

scariest thing you've ever done

and just how scary can a lizard be with

a name like frilly cover

just accept it some scaly animals are

designed for fighting

take these two heavyweights desert

tortoises they spend most of the year in

underground burrows but when it's mating

season the males are ready to rumble

that's about as exciting as watching

plants play part cheesy

this is no laughing matter henry when

tortoises fight they need to roll with

the punches

that's where the thick scaly shell comes

in it helps protect them from harm

look at them is this a fight or a salsa

dancing contest

they're trying to scare each other when

that doesn't work they attack

looks dangerous with those pointy bits

on their fronts they use those prongs to

flip each other over may the promised

man win

if that happens the losing tortoise may

die if it can't flip itself back

in the tranquil waters of africa's lake

tanganyika lurks another

scaly scoundrel to blacken the family

name

don't push it the scale biter cichlid is

a master of disguise

uh where is it then there it's a great

fish impression does it do lizards too

it is a fish henry it just pretends to

be another kind of fish so we can get

close

and eat their scales

and another

and another

didn't his mommy tell him not to pick

his food no

but here's a cichlid who will there once

was a scale-biting fish

who said scales are my favorite dish

then he bit a grey guy who called him

small fry

and had to scram quick or get squished

henry henry it's time for your report on

i'm not sure you're the most impartial

lizards are the laziest animals on earth

taking several medals in this year's

lazy olympics

lizards beat the sloth in the sloth this

competition

and the slugs and sluggishness when

asked how they felt about it

afterwards they all said

it's now been revealed that some lizards

are battery operated

but they keep forgetting to change the

batteries which may be why they never

cook anything

they just phone out for pizza hey pole

show lizard's favorite pizza toppings

are

flies moths beetles and ants so next

time a lizard asks you to dinner tell

him to bug off

the pizza that is hmm

you wise guy i think you made it all up

what like you don't make up your reports

you're right thank

you but not about lizards you got us all

wrong

you warm-blooded creatures just don't

understand

we're not lazy it just takes us a while

to get going when it's cold

look at this chameleon he's not moving

too quickly

give him a chance it's early he does

this trick called

sunny side dark where one side stays

bright for camouflage

and the other goes dark to soak up the

rays now he's warmed up

and ready for breakfast come and get it

fresh beetles get him while you're hot

wow what a mover but will he be beat by

a beetle

or lick him like a lizard

oh yeah crunchy on the outside

juicy in the middle i take it all back

henry

lizards aren't lazy just weird

do you see a snack shack anywhere you

chase beetles too if you lived out here

and the sand gets so hot

feeling hot hot hot you said lizards

were cold-blooded

that means our inside temperature goes

up and down with the outside temperature

that makes him a hot-blooded namibian

shade lover

yeah right he stays still to avoid

generating heat

and turns bright to reflect sunlight

away excuse me henry but that's

hi happy scale day so i see you've given

up your tv career henry

oh i wouldn't do that but i've decided

what this campaign needs

is the personal touch shake some paws

kiss some babies and

what else hmm

knock on some more doors i don't know if

i'd go in there if i were you henry

why not a family of eagles lives there

they sometimes eat guys like you moving

right along

how about this one leopards they've been

known to get a few scales between their

teeth

sheesh this is one rough neighborhood

with a bad appetite

maybe i'll just put a flyer through the

door

see what i mean no respect speaking of

flyers are those birdy feet

i see at least they're no threat to us

scalies don't be so sure henry a bird's

scaly feet are a reminder of its

reptilian past

and this roadrunner thinks nothing of

having family over for dinner

yikes so that rattlesnakes is relative

no wonder they don't get along

that roadrunner can sprint up to 30

miles per hour

mimi mr rattlesnake there's a road

runner on your tail

the rattlesnake can't outrun the

roadrunner but it can defend itself if

it has to

that rattle is a scaly reminder to the

road runner that it can pack a nasty

bite

don't do it bird brain a scalies have to

stick together

the truth is a fight could prove lethal

to both one bite from that

rattler could deliver enough poison to

k*ll the roadrunner

the rattlesnake coils ready to strike

looks like roadrunner's getting the

message

i think that was roadrunner for never

mind

or maybe round two well just you try it

mr roadrunner

you may be speedy but old rattler here

will make fast food out of you yet

hey it worked he knew he'd met his match

yeah

go pick on something fluffy

and now ladies and gentle lizards

it's time for a henry's amazing golden

gecko awards

the winners of my all-time best scaly

animals

are

third prize goes to the scale biter

cichlid

for loving scales so much it needs some

[Applause]

in second place for being up to his

eyeballs in amazing technicolor scales

the chameleon but tonight's golden gecko

award for all-time best scaly animal

goes to

the crocodile smile for the cameras now

gorgeous

crocodiles first became popular in

ancient egypt not only did the egyptians

build the pyramids but they also built

some pretty cool temples to honor the

crocodiles

and if you look around them you'll see

that one of their biggest stars was this

guy

sobek the crocodile god half man half

reptile

he was also all powerful and probably

would have been a huge movie star

only they hadn't invented movies so he

had to settle for being a rock star

instead

get it rock star yes henry but what

about

real crocodiles i was just getting there

even today in the waters of the nile

you can see what got those ancient

egyptians so excited

talk about making a splash these awesome

powerful beasts could strike fear in the

hearts of mortal men

during the september floods the

crocodiles would appear in their

thousands

to the egyptians their comings signified

the lasting fertility of the lands

and they worship them like gods as a way

of saying thank you

no so they didn't get eaten huh

well you know what they used to say swim

in september

you might get dismembered they did not

they might have ah it was a golden age

for crocodiles

people used to feed them and decorate

them in jewels those egyptians knew how

to treat a reptile right

is that a hint they even used to mummify

crocodiles

a secret they're still trying to keep

under wraps

which is why crocodiles among all scaly

animals top the scales

with a whopping 10 out of 10. this

golden gecko is yours

i'm beginning to get the message just to

make sure

i've asked a few of my scaly friends to

like the toki gekko who you can count on

to scale any wall

that's thanks to the special bristly

scales on their feet

which stick to just about anything

unsticking them is the tricky part he

writes

dear henry wish i could be there but i'm

stuck in my house and i'm crawling up

the walls

forest can be tricky

i'm not a bad swimmer actually i'm good

underwater i think scales are great

after all and you know a lot about them
