welcome to the world of amazing
woodland animals
[Music]
so then henry locks walked through the
forest until he came to a cabin
nice place they got here he found some
porridge but it was too
yucky yuck
you found a chair ah
and then he found the bed but there was
a bear already in it
henry stop that's not how the story
shh goes tell everyone you're supposed
to have three bears
i've already got three pigs besides
where we are they won't know the
difference
where are we in the woods do you realize
the animals don't even get cable out
here
that's why i've brought them henry's
amazing
animal extravaganza
[Music]
no time oh we need now is an audience
where are those piggies
get up there and advertise don't worry
about finding an audience henry the
woods are
full of animals oh yeah
i don't see anyone coming this way
step right up don't be shy i'm just an
actor
i won't bite
that guy i'm not so sure you have to be
open-minded henry the forest is home to
all sorts of animals
get down
[Music]
they like the same sorts of things you
do eating sleeping
even playing then they can be in my play
but hey no squirreling around
you'll find some pretty amazing
characters if you know where to look
talk about your prickly actors ouch
how about the pheasant she's got her
fancy costume on already
fine but snakes always start fishing
when i'm trying to act
they can sit in the balcony with that
paul cat i'm sure you'll get an audience
on the ground too
even high overhead things are looking up
yeah thanks to animals natural curiosity
i'm sure
hear that friends so don't get stuck in
that same old rat
come on down well joe the grouse will be
teaching us
how to applaud wildly
i hope you all got that there will be a
test later
[Music]
wow
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
henry what kind of show is this snow
white
you like i was hoping to recruit some of
the locals to play the dwarfs
trouble is i don't see a soul out there
the show must go on henry audience
oh audience or for arthel audience maybe
you just need to take a closer look
like where like behind those trees
okay come out we need you all on stage
we've got our stripy whitey flimsy
whimsy stinky winky
all i need now is a bashful where's my
bashful
ah there you are what's the matter
got stage fight little fellow in the
woods many animals would rather not be
seen
and for a good reason why
wearing sandals with socks because the
forest is full of predators
one way to escape them is to blend in
with the background like this moth is
doing
i don't see a moth then it's camouflage
must have worked
now tell me what would you do if you
were in the woods one day
and one of these bit pumas came your way
um
i i don't know beg for mercy
bad idea henry watch the elk
i can't i get squeamish at the side of
oh don't just stand there the elk
freezes
and the puma doesn't even notice she's
there
moving swiftly along we go from the big
freeze
to some big bees that's a wood wasp to
be precise
i love it when you're precise she's
using her long egg laying tail piece
called an ovipositor
to hide an egg deep inside the wood of
this fallen fir tree
well if that isn't a safe hiding place i
don't know what is
munch away little larva sorry to break
the news henry but the wood wasp is not
safe at all
not with this little terror around
another wasp it's orisa wasp a different
species
wrapping the tree bark with her black
antenna in search of a place to lay her
eggs
[Music]
i see she's got an overpopulator too
ova positor henry it takes an hour to
drill it into the wood wasp tunnel
why is she so picky about where she lays
her eggs
because her larva needs a special diet
[Music]
do they feed on wood too not exactly
risa larvae feed on the wood wasp
now is that a nice thing to do it's a
simple matter of survival
carving out a niche for yourself in the
wild well that's fine
as long as the niche isn't already
[Music]
occupied
[Music]
[Music]
yes
okay bunnies all together now come on
come on
hi h* what's this a sing-along
it would be if anyone would sing along
have you tried telling
ghost stories around the campfire it
requires less uh
audience participation good idea let me
think
um why don't you go first
okay it was a dark and spooky night
the wind was whistling in the trees the
grass was full of crickets
the trees were full of frogs overhead
the bats were hunting
a wolf bathed in the distance when all
of a sudden
out of the darkness a ghost
[Music]
i'm appeared out of here but henry
i haven't finished the story yeah well
who's road show is this anyway
save your ghost stories for the matinee
audience but henry a lot of these
woodland animals are only up at night
just ask the owl with the moon as its
searchlight
it's the real night watchman of the
forest
and from sensitive eyes to razor sharp
claws the owl has some of the best
nighttime hunting weapons around
the owl's eyes and ears are so large it
needs an extra large head to fit it all
in
oh what is this
a bowl attack
oops that vole was lucky to escape this
time
owls are covered with soft ruffled
feathers which make them almost silent
when they fly
stealth bummer to command
i hear the target a mouse
owls do have incredible hearing in fact
that's all they need to do
[Music]
catch their prey
the fluffy young owl drops the mouse
it's got to take the new one
only the freshest ball will do
hmm
[Applause]
wow
[Music]
henry henry it's time for your report on
the sounds of the forest
what now yes now
out of my way journal lizard coming
[Music]
through
[Music]
[Music]
kalinga
[Music]
but now our top story
the world's greatest thinkers have long
asked themselves if a baby tree falls in
the woods and there's no one around to
hear it
does it cry to its mommy for a bandage
the answer of course
is of course and now hidden cameras have
put an
end to our idea of the strong silent
tree forever
trees love to gossip and then our leaves
just turn red
and fell right off never trees
argue i asked you to quit shading my
saplings
who are you calling a sapling and now in
an incredibly rare piece of video
evidence
we can prove beyond the shadow of a
doubt trees tell jokes
what's brown and sticky i don't know a
sticky
until now no humans have ever heard any
of this that's because trees never talk
to strangers
so don't be a stranger tell an oak a
joke teach a beach
speech and hug a tree they might just
hug you back
and next the weather the weather the
weather i got it right
or whether i got it wrong take a guess
let's
so trees don't talk they'll make a sound
if you shake them
like this elk is doing
in the forest where vision is so often
blocked by trees and undergrowth
sound is a vital way of communicating
do you hear that
what is it road construction no
up there in the tree
is that what i think it is the great
spotted woodpecker
so what's all the racket woody
woodpeckers use their talent for tapping
to dig out food
to carve a nest hole or to send out a
message to other woodpeckers
without ever getting a headache
well that makes one of us pass the
aspirin please
how about this for a change of pace it's
a capper kaley
the male of the species and he's using
his extraordinary call to try to woo a
female to mate with him
making a racket like that isn't going to
win him any friends
now that he's found a female he'll sing
to her for up to an hour and a half
lucky girl well i'd rather listen to an
album by the all-star chainsaw orchestra
ah give him a break henry you'll never
get anywhere if you don't try your
hardest
oh he'll get somewhere all right
in his dreams
[Music]
oh henry what
rise and shine oh all rise but i won't
shine till i've had my breakfast i like
henry pops because there's green scaly
goodness in every spoonful
oh brother let's
i guess i'll have to go out for
breakfast i forgot
you mean you slept up the tree only
cause you scared me so much
now how am i gonna find breakfast come
on henry use your head
okay mind if i join you
so how do you do this just
henry i wouldn't
[Music]
that must have heard it did but the
little marshmallows inside are so
worth it uh those aren't marshmallows
what are they oh larvae bugs maggots
hmm not bad hmm i'm gonna tell all my
friends to come here
a lot of animals already know that trees
are the place to be
many make their homes up in the branches
and down near the roots
but it takes the burrowing skill of a
woodpecker to dig a nest hole wide
enough for three growing chicks
and they still have to share a room
a good nest hole might serve a pair of
woodpeckers for up to 10 years
but when it's finally abandoned there
are plenty other animals around who just
love to move in
i prefer a lot more light and maybe a
two bird garage
i'm sure most of the woodland birds
around here won't be so picky
let's see what this nut hatch makes of
the old nest hole
not bad just right for those weekend
getaways
the nut hatch is one of the forest's
greatest acrobats
lots of birds can walk up trees but only
the nut hatch can walk
down head first this is how they forage
for food
they rely completely on the strength in
their claws to keep from falling
now what's that i hope it's just
mud i wouldn't need it whatever it is
either mud or dung will do for what the
nut hatch has in mind
what kind of home improvement is that
it cakes on mud to narrow down the nest
entrance
hopefully this will discourage predators
and also larger birds who might come
along and kick the nut hatches out
otherwise you never know who you might
find when you come home from a hard day
on the donkey
of course birds aren't the only animals
who live in trees
mammals do too in australia the koala
only comes down to earth for the
occasional drink of water
they rely completely on the leaves of
the eucalyptus trees for their food
and the branches of the eucalyptus
provide them with a home safe from
predators
where they can sleep for up to 18 hours
a day
they also give old koala one whale of a
ride on a windy day
now
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
it must be showtime again huh henry
that's right
we're doing the three little pigs and
i'm playing the big
bad wolf guys put some hairs on your
chinny chin chins and get out there
and remember no hamming that's the
trouble with pigs
sorry henry but you don't look much like
a real wolf to me
maybe but my acting is very convincing
here goes
little pig little pig let me
in help me out here will you oh
uh not by the hair on my chinny chin
chin
then i'll huff and i'll puff and i'll
blow your house in
[Applause]
huh what happened to my audience
what happened to my little piggies
[Music]
i think they went wee wee wee all the
way home
you mean my acting was that good
they thought i was a real big bad wolf
don't build up your part there's a lot
more to wolves than just a lot of
huffing and puffing
oh all right
you have to look beyond the legend henry
in many woodlands worldwide
it's still possible to find the real
thing
a lone wolf brave strong
mysterious like me oh brother
really wolves are more likely to stay in
packs
who said they could howl i don't see any
moon yet
wolves howl because they're territorial
not because of the moon
howling tells other wolves to steer
clear so it helps them avoid fights
when a young male wolf breaks off from
his pack he doesn't howl at all
he'll have to go and find his own
territory and a mate
if he's ever going to have a pack of his
own
[Music]
bulls have been hunted out of most of
their old forest habitats
but in protected wilderness areas
they're safe
the challenge of the wild is not mere
personal survival
but also to succeed in raising a new
generation
[Music]
ah now that's really something to howl
about
[Music]
and now ladies and gentle lizards it's
time for henry's amazing golden gecko
awards
the winners of my all-time best amazing
woodland animals are
[Music]
in third place for having the nerve to
say that if she didn't win
she'd sting me the bad mannered whistle
wasp
and in second place eleven please so
much
she even gives them bark massages it's
the fisher
but tonight's golden fickle award for
the earliest woodland animal of them all
goes to none other than the tree
squirrel
these fast and frolick some acrobats use
their bushy tails for balance
they live on a diet of acorns nuts and
pine cones they find in the trees
often they'll drop cones to the ground
and collect them afterwards
as this fella is demonstrating squirrels
have thrived on every continent except
australia
and of course antarctica where hardly
anybody wants to live anyway
there are two common varieties the red
squirrel which you see here
and the gray squirrel which you'll see
if you're watching on a black and white
television
squirrels are famous for their forward
thinking and will bury
thousands of surplus food stores
underground to help them through the
winter months
[Music]
unfortunately their backward thinking
isn't perfect
and they sometimes can't remember where
they put all their food
of course we all know what you get for
putting pine seeds into the ground
and leaving them we do
baby pine trees and that makes the tree
squirrel
a true friend of the forest and my
golden gecko winner
so henry did you consider your roadshow
success
you bet i've heard of standing ovations
but how many actors get a running
ovation
but my work here is done and it's time
to move on
are you taking your new double act on
the road even better
i've got a whole new cast of amazing
animal actors
so what should we perform next babes in
the woods
robin hood i know sleeping beauty now
there is a part for me
[Music]
[Applause]
[Music]
[Applause]
you
