whiskers and a tail

hmm i haven't got a clue have you

what's on tv oh goody

welcome back to brainy island where our

contestants are still trying to cross

that crocodile pit

i wouldn't go on that show in a million

years they've made it the treasure

is theirs treasure

and second thoughts maybe i would

if you think you've got the brain power

to come on brainy island

then pick up a pen and write in now a

pen

i need a pen i said pen

not carrot hey i thought i recognized

that voice

that's right henry i'm the new host on

brainy island

moonlighting huh aren't we paying you

enough

are you kidding um

so can i go on brainy island please

do you think you're clever enough just

look up clever in the dictionary what do

you find

that's the entry for confused henry

oh so what is cleverness anyway

that's a tricky question because a lot

of the trickiest things you find animals

doing

are instinctive i don't care what they

smell like

those nests are clever instinctive henry

not stinky

the weaver bird doesn't learn to weave

these nests they're born with the

knowledge already programmed in their

brains

and if the nest isn't perfect it's

thrown out

well they should learn not to litter

being able to learn is a big part of

cleverness

learning to get food from a milk bottle

comes through experimentation

once one bird figures it out he passes

on the knowledge

a lot of animal cleverness is fueled by

the need to eat

tasty one garbage burger to go

intelligence is a tool for survival

henry and after a new technique is

discovered like using a tool

it can be handed down from parent to

child

but it takes that first lucky individual

to crack nature's secret

so the rest of the species can follow

i'd rather crack jokes myself

survival in the wild is tricky so you

could say that any animal that manages

to survive

is in its own way very clever

even me let me think about that one

imagine if you dare an island of the

mind

a land of puzzles and conundrums i don't

hear any drums

welcome to brainy island

today's team members are wally the dog

shirley the chicken loki the talking

raven

say hello loki

and henry the lizard

challengers your boat to brainy island

awaits but

to get on board you must first watch and

copy this simple musical code

easy even a chicken could do that one

well almost let me try

uh mr lizard henry

henry what is it

the boat left without you oh no

and here's me without my swimsuit

it's your own fault for trying to be too

clever

henry won't you ever learn sometimes

it's enough to just do what your teacher

tells you

funny that's what my teachers always say

in the animal world

parents are the best teachers of all

boto river dolphin mothers only have a

short time to teach their young

everything they need to survive and they

have some pretty clever teaching

techniques too

these dolphins have poor vision in the

murky water of the amazon

so they must learn to use echolocation

to catch their fish

to help her baby practice the mother

uses a fish side

stick

i like a family that sticks together

don't you

henry it beats fighting all the time

those chimps are playing for young

animals playing is a clever way to learn

survival skills

and mother chimp is keeping an eye on

them for apes

they sure do monkey around don't they

but now it's time to go to their lessons

let me guess piano no ballet

try termite fishing are you pulling my

leg

no watch how the chimp pulls these

termites out of their mound with a twig

amazingly chimps are one of the few

animals that have learned how to use

tools now that's clever

this technique has become a normal part

of a chimps education

having been passed from chimp to chimp

down the generations so

that makes the little guy a real chimp

off the old block huh

yeah i suppose so henry

this is brainy island find a key and win

valuable points

i love it did everyone make it everyone

except the chicken

what happened she chickened out figures

so what's our next challenge uh-oh

contestants

you've just wandered into level two the

wall of wonder your challenge is to get

to the other side

using only your brain power and the

things you find around you

all right listen up i'm gonna use these

springs and bounce myself right over the

top of this wall

wally you take the shovel and pail and

dig your way under it and loki

uh you sit right there on the door mat

and we'll let you in when we get to the

other side

okay wally start digging

hold on loki we'll be there before you

can say leaping lizards

aren't you forgetting the doormat henry

no time for that now

here i go

did we make it no

but oh look loki found the key under the

doormat

amazing and now you're through

thanks to our clever feathered friend

who's not the only winged wonder with

the key to solving a problem

all right enough with the game show talk

but henry i'm talking about the

woodpecker finch

the finch isn't graced with the true

woodpeckers long thin beak

so cleverly it uses a tool to reach its

favorite food

well that's one way to rustle up some

grub good one henry

second hand what a goodie thanks i take

him where i find him

like the marsh mongoose who spends its

days foraging for freshwater clams

i think she's got one nope

must have been a rock

now there's a clam to be proud of

the problem is how to get the clam meat

inside

here's your answer give that clam a slam

that should have done it the mongoose

has had to use its problem-solving

skills in order to find the food locked

inside the clam shell

seems pretty clever to me

it's just one step away from true tool

use

which is something chimpanzees do

amazingly well when it comes time to

crack nuts

nutcrackers sweet

until very recently it was thought that

only humans used tools

but now we know chimps use things like

rocks as simple tools too

some tools he must get him down at the

hard rock store

whale song

what now yes now

out of my way journal lizard coming

tonight water wing wrestlers make a big

splash

and chimp wets his head

but now our top story

the amazing animal property property

dinosaurs

there's orca the lady k*ller

started out in paris where he was the

humpback of notre dame

he even tried to make it in the afro and

then hip-hop

of course whales don't have hips and

they sure can't hop

but when he met the band they developed

a new sound which drove the

girl whales wild with their number one

hit

my baby's got the barnacle blues

and the rest is history

you couldn't even give it away henry

but for once it wasn't all nonsense

male humpback whales really do sing

their hearts out to attract a female

partner

so it wasn't such a whopper after all

their songs are remarkably complex too

some scientists think they might carry

special meaning

you see and no two whales sing in

exactly the same way

c what's the matter getting seasick

quail song can be heard up to 100 miles

away

that is amazing males sing in the hope

that a female will join them

some songs last five minutes others half

an hour

one was recorded lasting more than a day

deep underwater

ah what a nice couple i wonder if he

knows that all too

teetertotter team trials

so far so good but have you got the

teamwork skills to conquer

these guys i'm not so sure

oh brother your challenge is to balance

the clouds on top of the mountain match

up the arrows and reveal what's behind

the golden door got that

no problem i could do that with my eyes

closed

now now henry there's no i in teamwork

you have to work together of course you

guys

work down here cheering for me got it

i've always been a very well-balanced

lizard

oops just a slight adjustment

whoa i told you this job calls for

teamwork

that's what i keep trying to tell them

get up here team

hmm not quite teamwork

meme work i've had it with you too

careful henry whoa don't worry wally

you won't fall oops

sorry and now comes the tricky part

huh loki what are you doing

i don't want to fall too

you did it loki you figured it out

really all thanks to my clever coaching

of course

of course and i suppose you'll be

telling me you taught these otters all

cichlids

their teamwork skills too

i might have did they watch our show

not likely they're too busy chasing

cichlids

cichlids the favorite fish of these

otters

but in water this clear they're hard to

sneak up on

so the otters cleverly hunt in pairs

look at them go one chase is straight on

the other takes to the sides together

they drive the cichlid right into their

trap

what i call a dead end

it's their ability to work together

which makes them the only animal

capable of catching the super fast

cichlid and that one's ability

to be greedy makes him the only animal

capable of eating one

Golden Gecko

and now ladies and gentle lizards

it's time for a henry's amazing golden

gecko awards the winners of my

all-time best amazing clever animal are

[Music]

in third place it's the chimpanzee where

they're smashing up nuts or just

rocking out they're a modern stone age

[Music]

family

and in second place we're putting the

stick back into fish sticks

it's the river swimming near-sighted

photo dolphin

[Applause]

but tonight's golden gecko award for

best performance by a clever animal

goes to my partner loki the raven

[Applause]

and now as a golden gecko exclusive

we're going up close and personal to see

loki enjoying a typical day at home

being a lifelong nature lover loki chose

to give his home the rustic

and simple look with lots of natural

light and plenty of fresh air being a

domesticated raven

means that loki has his own pet human

who comes every day to feed him

and give him the tender loving care he

needs

but keeping a pet human is a big

responsibility for loki

they're always forgetting to do the

simplest things

even shutting the gate properly so loki

has to keep a watchful eye on her at all

times

but being clever and naturally curious

he doesn't mind even if that means he

has to be a little bit sneaky about it

here loki's human is stringing up a

snack for one of his birdie neighbors

but that's no ordinary coconut it's a

hollowed-out shell

filled with fat and bird seed yum yum

that's looking good to loki who's still

hungry in fact

you could say that raven was ravenous

time to take matters into his own hands

i mean everybody likes to eat out once

in a while

[Applause]

ravens might not be the fanciest birds

in the world

or the most generous but there are a lot

of other things

strong agile terrific mimics

and very handy at rope tricks

but it's their ability to understand

what's going on around them

to learn from their experiences and to

solve problems to get what they're after

which makes loki our golden gecko winner

Mystery Bird

ahoy there contestants are you ready to

face the wheel of mystery

this looks tricky loki you'd better

leave this up to my superior intellect

[Applause]

they don't call it amazing animals for

nothing

hey

you get it loki

hey flying's not allowed you should have

thought of that before you let a raven

on the show

you found the treasure sent it down

now you never know

what you'll find in the box of mystery

it could be precious

or just a load of old junk yeah but i

can't find the ingredients list anywhere

on this box

Kia

well i know a bird with a better idea

the kia from new zealand

oh brother i thought new zealand was

supposed to be

nice that place looks like a dump

it is henry a garbage dump and it's the

kia's hangout

you call that clever yes because rather

than being pushed out by the increasing

human population

the kias have adapted figuring out a way

to benefit from their neighbors by

feeding off their refuse

if that were me i'd refuse to touch it

well henry kias aren't so picky except

when they're picking their way through

old garbage bags

or picking up litter

[Music]

or picking a hole in a cardboard box

that's the only way to get at the food

scraps inside

by learning to adapt to a new food

source these clever birds have become

successful

scavengers i like scavenger hunts as

much as the next lizard

but these guys make their living out of

it

[Music]

Loki

now challengers you have the box but can

you break

brainy island's secret code for a couple

of clever guys like us

no problem right loki

see what i mean you just type in your

age times your weight in golf ba*ls

minus the speed of sound plus 12

my mom has a lock like this on our

cookie jar

oh what's inside with

maybe i'll eat it after all
