02x07 - Patience - Helen Keller/How the Brazilian Beetles Got Their Coats

Post by bunniefuu »

Tell me a story. Beat me up

on.

Melody Sing me the song,

then let me hold it deep in my

heart. Where we

can speak to me all the day long.

The Adventure of the Truth. The adventure

of Truth.

Knowing that, it's up to you.

Building a new thing shining in the sun.

This is my story, the adventure.

Time.

Race you home, Annie? Sure, but prepare

to lose.

Oh. I forgot. I'm tutoring Josh today.

Who's Josh? He's a second grader. I'm

helping him with his math. I'll see you

later.

Hi, Josh.

Oh, hi.

You all set to work in your arithmetic, I

guess, but I'm really

terrible at fractions. Oh, don't

worry.

I can help you.

I didn't.

Annie, could you show me how to do this

again? Josh, I already explained it 100

. timesIt's really

easy, but. I I

didn't.

Josh.

Josh.

Hey, what are you doing here, Annie?

I thought you'd still be at school

helping Josh. I can't

believe I volunteered to do this tutoring

stuff in the 1st place. And why is that,

Andy? Yes. We thought you liked tutoring.

Well, I do. Except Josh

just isn't getting it. What's so

difficult about Josh? Well, he's

so, so look

out I I'm coming through.

Incoming.

Are you a right song? Sure, fine. It's

great. Everything is. Oh, shut up.

You are and you will never,

and I mean never, learn to skate,

says who?

It's home, by the way. Try to teach

you is like, like like trying to teach

the Buffalo, the backstroke.

Oh, sorry, pal. I was just trying to

make a point. Point well

taken. Anywho, I've been

trying to teach you to skate, but

you are simply untouchable.

Yeah, just like Josh. You mean he

can't skate through either?

No, I mean he's unteachable.

Now, what makes you say that, Annie?

Well, I've explained the same math

problem so I'm a million times, but she

still doesn't get it.

Going up? Thanks, Aurora. You're

welcome, Sir. Sounds like

you got yourself a problem, Annie. I just

don't want to teach Josh anymore. It's

impossible. I just feel like

giving up. Whoa. You, Annie. You're

the one who raises me. Even if you have a

flat tire and a sore toe, you never

give up. Well, I am

now. Sometimes teaching just takes a

little dose of patience, Annie. But I

was patient for a whole hour. At

least. It sounds like you really did try,

Annie. But sometimes patients takes an

extra special effort. I don't

understand. Tell me, Annie, have you

ever heard the story of Helen Keller? I

don't think so. Well, she was a

young girl everyone thought was beyond

reach, unteachable. In fact,

her teacher almost gave up on her.

Helen Keller was born in Alabama in

1880.

The doctor said that if if Helen's fever

gets any higher, she could and she's

not even two years old.

Now, now, dear, let's not give

up hope.

Oh sweet baby,

my sweet child, please

stay with us.

Helen did survive, but her terrible

illness destroyed her ability to see

and to hear, leaving her in

total darkness and total

silence.

For the five years after that, because

she could neither see nor hear, Helen

grew up wild and unruly.

No.

Oh dear. Finally, beyond

any real hope for their daughter, the

Kellers hired a teacher from the Perkins

Institute of the Blind in Boston to see

if she could help with Helen.

Her name was Ann Sullivan,

and this Miss Sullivan is Helen.

Hello, Helen.

With your permission, missus Keller, I'd

like to get started teaching Helen. Right

now. Now. But you've only just

arrived. No time like the present. Mrs.

Keller and Helen and I have a lot of work

to do. Well, then, I suppose I'll

leave you two alone.

Your lesson will begin with this.

Would you like to know what she's called?

DOLL

DO. Everything has a name, Helen. Learn

this and I can open the world to you.

But thinking in a game, Helen simply

mimicked the finger shapes back into Anne

's hand, then pushed her away.

Well, Miss Sullivan, this is going to be

more difficult than you thought.

The next morning, a nervous but

determined Anne went down to the

kitchen for breakfast when?

Well, we certainly can't have this.

If it's a drink you want, Helen,

then I suggest using this.

MUGM.

Broken glass never stopped me. Helen,

you'll find that I'm just as stubborn as

you. Now

let's try that again.

MUG, mug.

No matter. There's more where that came

from.

Well, if that's the way you want it.

Come now, Helen. Won't you let me

in just a little.

This went on for several days

until Anne was nearly out of patience and

the callers were nearly out of mugs.

Although it's only been four weeks, I

fear I failed as a teacher.

Nothing I do works. I don't know

how to reach Helen, but since a

childhood eye infection had left Anne

half blind herself, she,

more than anyone, understood the darkness

that surrounded Helen.

Here you are, Miss Sullivan, feeling

sorry for yourself when you can hear the

birds sing and you can see the beauty of

a sunset. I will

not let Helen down.

So the very next day, Anne tried

again. DOLLDO well,

two

can

play that game.

Sorry, I don't give up that easily.

Helen Keller If you're smart enough to

destroy that doll so that I can't have

it, then you're smart enough to

understand. That this is a mug.

MUG. Oh, no,

you don't. If it takes until I'm

old and Gray, you're going to learn that

everything has a name. This

is water, Helen.

WATER. Water.

Then something wonderful happened.

The sudden cold of the water woke a part

of Helens mind that had been asleep for a

long time.

Helen, what is it?

You want me to spell it, don't

you?WATER.

Water. WATE

R.

Water. Yes, Helen, Yes.

MUG.

Ellen finally understood that

everything had a name.

Earth, Earth, Earth, Earth, Earth, Earth.

EARTH. And

now she wanted to know the name of

everything she touched and

spelled horse.

And cat and flower

and so many other words that day.

Thanks to her patient teacher, the door

to Helens, dark and silent world had

opened at last.

DOLL. Doll. Yes, that's right.

Helen. What is it? What do you

want to know?You

want to know what to call me?

Call me.

TEACHER.

Then Helen spelled back the one word that

will become very dear to Anne Sullivans

heart. T

EACHER.

Teacher. OK, careful now you

guys. Everyone hold on to the one in

front of you.

Oh, sorry,

I tripped. Walking without seeing is a

lot harder than I thought. Yeah, and

scary too. Oh, don't be selling. There

was nothing hard or scary about it.

Perhaps not for a Prairie dog like you,

Ari. You're used to the darkness of your

underground tunnels. But just like

fractions are a new experience for Josh,

for others, moving about in the darkness

is a new experience. And can be very

difficult. I can't imagine not seeing or

hearing. Boy, Helen Keller sure had it

tough, but so did Anne

Sullivan. Helping people can be really

hard. It takes a lot of patience.

That's right, Annie. And it also takes a

lot of patience to become a good teacher.

No one becomes good at something

overnight. Exactly Why I

must have dug 1000 tunnelsbefore I got

the perfect dimensions. Your mother is a

Baker, Annie. But did her very first

cake come out perfect?No.

In fact, it was a disaster. Speaking of

disasters, did I ever tell you about the

time I tried to put a new toy car

together without reading the

instructions first? I

wanted to play with it so badly that I

wasn't patient enough to read the

instructions, so I ended up

with a toy car that didn't work.

What a waste of my allowance.

I know you're all trying to tell me that

I can't become a great teacher overnight,

and I know that I should be more patient

with Josh, but the truth is,

I've tried everything and he just doesn't

get it. Look at this beetle, Annie.

See anything special about it?

Not really. That's just a plain old

beetle. Maybe. Or maybe not.

Take an even closer look.

Good morning. How are you today, Beetle?

Fine, thank you monkey. It's such a

lovely day. For a change of pace, I

thought I'd go for a walk.

Good day, Lizard James. Area

be down.

Good. Great. You certainly move

slow, don't you,

Beatle? Why, at the rate

you're going, you'll never get

anywhere, Actually,

Now watch me and learn.

What do you think of this?

That's very nice, but I You don't have to

tell me. I can see it written

all over your face. You're just

dying of jealousy. Well,

admit it.

You wish you were fast. To

tell you the truth, it must be

simply awful being you.

Yes, so slow.

Frankly, I'm. Never thought of myself as

slow, you see.

Did you hear that, Harry? The beetle

never thought of herself as

slow.

Say right, how would you like to

race the beetle?

What? Me Race the

beetle? You can't be

serious. Oh.

I'm quite serious and just to make things

interesting. I'm offering a

brightly colored coat as a prize to the

lucky winner.

I'll even have it made to order.

Well, in that

case, you're on. Make

mine a bright yellow coat with big

beautiful stripes on it, just like

tigers.

Look at me, I'm a tiger.

And if you win, what kind of coat would

you like?

Oh, make mine as

colorful as the jungle itself.

Stream on Beatle. You're a

slow poke you can't

possibly win.

So the Pirates of the Royal Palm Tree at

the top of the Cliff as the goal of the

race.

Oh, Are you ready?

Has she'll ever be the Nonya

Mark get set?

Hey, what's the hurry? Even working,

I'm faster than that bumbling beetle.

But then again.

If I get there as fast as I can,

it'll make that beta look even slower.

Boy, am I ever gonna look

smashing in my new coat.

I'll be the touch. Rainforest,

I'll be invited to all the right

parties.

If this were any easier, I'd feel like I

was cheating.

But when the rat reached the Royal Palm

tree at the top of the Cliff, he couldn't

believe his eyes. Yeah.

No, somebody pitched me. You

must be dreaming.

You beat me, but that's impossible. I'm

fast and you're slow.

All right. How did she do it?

Why don't you ask her? Why don't you ask

her?

How did you do it? Did you

cheat? Certainly not.

But if you had taken the time to get to

know me, you would have noticed

my wings.

And from that day on, the Brazilian

beetle wore a beautiful coat of gold and

green. Crap just wasn't

patient enough to listen to the Beatle.

Patience, Annie. You'll find a way to

reach Josh.

Just a human touch in this world that

counts, the touch of your hand and mine,

which means far more to the fainting

heart than shelter and bread and

wine. For shelter is gone when the

night is over, and bread lasts only a

day, but the touch of the hand and the

sound of a voice. Sing

on in the soul all way.

That's it.

Annie, where are you going?

To help Josh find his wings.

Annie, what are you doing here?

I've come to apologize, Josh, for

being so impatient with you.

It's not your fault. I'm just not good

at math, but you're great

at art. And if you'll

still let me help you, I think we can

lick that math problem together.

And everything will turn out right.

Wait, you don't have to build a

mountain overnight. Find your

wings and fly. Don't be

scared. If you once fell, time

is on your side.

Only if you use it well,

you can understand.

Nothing when you take

the time to

find your way.

Go wait. Just keep on

trying. Don't give up.

Wait, relax and

don't be in a rush. Find

your wings and fly.

Don't be scared. If you won't, spell

time is on your side.

But only if you use it well,

you can understand.

Our face when you take the time

to find your way.
