NARRATOR:The great house at Collinwood

as it appears in a world of parallel time

running concurrently with our own,

a world that has mysteriously opened itself

to Barnabas Collins.

But soon after he appeared in this time,

his darkest secret was discovered by a man

named William H. Loomis.

Now Barnabas Collins lies trapped in a chained coffin,

unaware that on this night, in a graveyard

not far from Collinwood,

three people are about to open a coffin

and settle a mystery that has plagued

all who live at Collinwood,

did Angelique Collins really die six months before?

Or does she still live in the guise

of her twin sister, Alexis?

Why are you here?

How did you know to come here?

Unless you're--

Unless I'm Angelique?

You believe it now too, don't you?

Well, I'm here because I overheard the two of you

and because I don't want my sister's grave defiled.

Quentin, please, if you will stop now, I will go away.

That will end all the torment you're going through.

I'll leave Collinwood tonight.

And will that stop what's happening in this house?

No.

No, I must go on.

And no one's going to stop me.

Quentin, no, no!

Will she never be allowed to rest in peace?

I must go on.

No matter what the spell.

[casket creaking]

[dramatic music]

[waves crashing]

[eerie music]

[dramatic music]

It's the most astonishing thing I've ever seen in my life.

Dead over six months.

And yet the body's perfectly preserved.

Oh, it's impossible.

CYRUS: But it's happened.

How, Cyrus?

You're a scientist, there must be some explanation.

There is no scientific explanation.

There is no chemical explanation for a body

that is this perfectly preserved.

Cyrus, now you always shared Angelique's interest

in the occult.

Now is it possible that she found some way

of surviving after death?

I don't know.

I don't understand any of it.

Quentin, can we please close the casket now?

No, we're not finished here.

We cannot simply let this matter drop.

Angelique is dead,

but her body remains intact, perfectly preserved.

Now for the sake of her own rest,

and for our peace of mind,

the body must be destroyed.

Destroyed, how?

I'll have it cremated.

No, Quentin, no!

You can't, it's wrong!

Alexis, Alexis, Quentin is right.

What's happened here tonight is beyond the realm

of any human understanding.

And the only safe thing to do is to destroy the body.

I won't allow it!

And I can fight you on this, legally.

I have seen her will,

and the law says you must respect her wishes.

Now, Quentin, Angelique is dead.

No matter what condition she's in now.

No matter what anyone else thinks, she is dead.

And how many people do you think'll believe that

after they find out what we've seen here?

They'll all believe it.

If we swear ourselves to secrecy.

We can announce that we opened the casket,

that Cyrus and I were your witnesses,

that we saw Angelique's remains,

and that you are satisfied now that she is dead.

I, uh, I don't agree with you.

But I'll think it over.

Please, can we close the casket now?

[casket creaking]

You want to put it back inside

or leave it like this?

No one ever comes down here.

Quentin?

Have you nothing else to say to me?

What do you mean?

Have you forgotten why you came here tonight?

All the doubts you had about me?

I no longer have any doubts.

Nor will I ever have again.

You are Alexis.

I'm very sorry to have disturbed you.

I hope you'll forgive me.

Why, yes, of course I'll forgive you.

Now please, I think we should all go back to Collinwood.

[ominous music]

[wind howling]

[rattling]

[door slamming]

Hello, Trask.

What are you doing here?

You're supposed to be at the Loomis house

until Mr. Quentin sends for you.

I know, but I don't want to go there.

It's lonely there.

I have no one to talk to and no one to play with.

Well, Mr. Quentin will be very upset if he sees you here.

I'd better take you back, he'll be blaming me.

But I don't want to go back there.

Now, Miss Amy, please, don't be difficult.

Not at a time like this.

Like what?

Tell me what's wrong, Trask.

Nothing, nothing, nothing's wrong.

AMY: Yes, it is.

You've changed.

Changed, what are you talking about?

You act as though you're scared or something.

Well, I'm not, I'm just,

just tired, that's all.

I've been working very hard.

Now come with me, I'll,

I'll take you back to Loomis'.

Has Quentin found out any more about Dameon?

Now what makes you ask about him?

AMY: I was just wondering, that's all.

No, that's not all.

You've seen him again, haven't you?

You've seen Dameon again.

Where did you see him?

Tell me, tell me, where?

Let go of me, you're hurting my arm, let go!

Not until you tell me why you asked about Dameon.

I was just wondering!

Trask, just what do you think you're doing?

AMY: I didn't mean anything, Quentin.

I just asked him about Dameon and he got mad at me.

That's all right, Amy.

You're gonna be all right, come on.

You go on into the drawing room.

I'll be in to talk with you in a minute.

Have you lost your senses?

I'm sorry, sir.

I'm afraid I,

I lost my head.

It's the atmosphere in this house, that's what it is.

There's an evil presence here, sir.

I feel it everywhere.

It's been here ever since,

ever since Dameon came back.

QUENTIN: Get a hold of yourself, Trask.

TRASK: Forgive me, sir.

How'd Amy get up here?

Who brought her up here from the Loomis house?

Oh, no one brought her, sir.

She, she came of her own accord.

QUENTIN: What?

I, I told her she'd have to go back, sir.

I, I was getting ready to take her when you came in.

Oh, you were?

I would have never have guessed that when I walked in.

TRASK: Yes, sir.

Well, you will take her back.

Just as soon as I have a talk with her.

ALEXIS: Trask?

Yes, ma'am?

I think you ought to know that Quentin and I

settled tonight any doubts about Angelique's death.

I'm afraid I don't understand.

Well, we went to her grave and opened her casket

and viewed her remains.

Dr. Longworth was there, too.

Cyrus, why don't you tell Trask what happened?

Yes, well, there, there, there can be no more speculation

about Angelique's death.

Her body is in the tomb at rest.

I see.

I think we've all become so preoccupied with ghosts

that we've decided the house is filled with them.

Well, it isn't.

If you'll forgive me, ma'am,

I believe what you've told me

about Miss Angelique, but

you'll never convince me that there isn't

an evil spirit in this house.

I feel it.

I know that there's someone from beyond the grave--

You can believe whatever you want to, Trask,

but I don't think there's any point

in discussing it any further.

Whatever you say, ma'am.

The poor man is so frightened, there's no

reasoning with him.

I don't want to shock you, Alexis, but I agree with him.

What?

Now, I have something very important

that I'd like to discuss with you.

Can I take you up to your room?

Why, yes, of course.

[ominous music]

[gentle tinkling music]

What do you want to talk to me about, Cyrus?

I'd like to discuss Angelique a little further.

What about her?

I know she was your sister,

but how well did you really know her?

I'm afraid that we were never close the way sisters are.

I suppose the truth is I never knew her at all.

Well then, it's possible that we at Collinwood,

who were extremely close to her,

knew her far better than you ever did.

Yes, that's possible.

What's your point?

Yes, well, the point is, she and I shared

a common interest in the occult.

Although her knowledge of it was far superior to mine,

but being a scientist, I,

I was always reluctant to accept anything supernatural.

She had a way of, she kept saying all the time

she could come back from the death,

and that's why she was never afraid of dying.

She had an uncanny rapport with the unnatural.

I never once believed that she could survive death.

Until tonight.

Cyrus, you don't know what you're saying.

Look, what we have seen here tonight goes beyond

the realm of anything that is logically possible.

It is simply not physiologically possible

for her to survive death.

It isn't at all.

And yet she has.

And that being true, I submit that anything is possible.

Even her eventual return.

No, I can't believe that would ever happen.

Well, whether you believe it or not,

you had better consider very carefully

what Quentin said at the mausoleum tonight.

For everybody's concern, I think that the body

must be destroyed.

ALEXIS: No.

Or else we will never know what the consequences may be.

[door clicking]

I'll do anything you tell me, Quentin,

but I don't wanna go back to the, Will's house.

Now you keep on saying that you don't want to go back,

but you haven't given me a good reason.

Yes, I have, I told you that I didn't want--

I know what you told me.

But I think there's more to it than that.

Now what is it, young lady?

Well, you wouldn't believe me if I told you anyway.

You'll say I'm imagining things.

Oh, no, I won't, now you trust me.

Go on and tell me.

Well, not having a playmate or anyone to talk to

doesn't bother me that much.

Yes?

What does is

the spooky feeling in that house.

Spooky feeling, in Will Loomis' house?

Something's happening there,

and it isn't anything you can see.

All I know is that something's happening there

that's made me more frightened

than I've ever been.

[suspenseful music]

Amy, you just can't say something like that

without trying to explain.

But I don't know how to explain.

Well, you've got to try.

Now,

all people have a reason for their fears.

Now, usually it's not too hard to find.

All you've gotta do is think about it.

I have thought about it.

Well, now, has there been any particular time

of the day or night when, uh, you've been

afraid the most, when you've felt this fear?

AMY: I feel it all the time.

Whenever I'm inside the house.

I don't understand.

Neither do I.

It all seems normal enough.

Carolyn hardly spends any time there,

and Will's so busy writing his new book that--

New book?

That doesn't make a bit of sense.

Will hasn't done any writing for almost five years.

Well, he's so busy writing now,

he hasn't time for anything else.

I've stood in the doorway to his study and watched him,

and he hasn't even noticed me.

Yesterday I went in there when he wasn't there,

and I found two pages in the waste basket.

You still have them?

Yes, you wanna read them?

Yes, very much.

Thank you, Amy.

[dramatic music]

"October of ,

"I wrote what I believed to be the definitive biography

"of Barnabas Collins.

"But certain facts of history have recently been

"brought to my attention, facts which have

"proved to me that the life of Barnabas Collins,

"as I constructed and recorded,

"was pure fiction and nothing more.

"Providence has now afforded me a second chance.

"I shall endeavor in these pages to set the record straight

"and tell the true and shocking story

"of the life of Barnabas Collins."

AMY: What's the matter, Quentin?

I don't know.

I read Will's original book on Barnabas Collins.

It's very hard to see how he could find out

any more about the man.

I'll have to talk to him and ask him.

[light twinkling music]

[knocking]

Come in.

Trask.

TRASK: You wanted to see me, ma'am?

Yes.

Has Mr. Collins retired for the night?

I believe he's in his study doing some work, ma'am.

Well, there's something I want you to do for me.

Something I don't want him to know anything about.

What is it, ma'am?

I want you to drive me back to the cemetery.

I want to visit my sister's tomb again.

It's rather late, ma'am.

I know, but I don't wanna wait until tomorrow.

I have my reasons.

Whatever you say, ma'am.

I'll be ready to go in minutes.

Very well, I'll have the car waiting in front.

Thank you.

[ominous music]

[wind howling]

[thunder crashing]

Trask, you can go back now to the car

and wait for me there.

But, ma'am, you really shouldn't be out here alone.

No, don't worry about me, I'll be all right.

Really, I will.

Well, that storm isn't far off, ma'am.

There's an umbrella in the car.

I'll get it and bring it back.

No, please, just wait for me there in the car.

I won't be long.

All right, ma'am.

[eerie music]

[casket creaking]

I don't know what your secret was, Angelique.

Or why you still look as you did in life.

I only know that it is wrong.

It goes against the natural order of things.

I don't want to do what I have to do now.

Quentin and Cyrus are right.

Your body must be destroyed.

[dramatic music]

My dear Alexis, you were always so right.

Someone must be destroyed, but it won't be me.

It will be you.

[dramatic music]
