NARRATOR:The great, proud house of Collinwood,
where Barnabas Collins has discovered
that another identical Collinwood exists
in parallel, concurrent time,
and he has stumbled inadvertently
through the barrier that separates the two times.
His ancient curse has followed him even here,
and his guilty secret was discovered by the
dissolute William Hollingshead Loomis,
who has chained his coffin in a deserted basement room.
Were he free,
he would see that a woman has come to Collinwood,
adding terror to the fears of its new mistress,
Maggie Collins.
The woman uncannily resembles Maggie'’s husband'’s first wife,
who is six months dead.
[door slams]
QUENTIN: Maggie!
Quentin, Quentin, what'’s happened?
She left.
She actually went out that door.
Shouldn'’t you go after her?
Why?
She behaved like a child.
-Oh, but even still. -Yes, you'’re right.
[car engine revving, car retreating]
It'’s too late now, isn'’t it?
[dramatic music]
[eerie theme music]
[dramatic music]
Would I be intruding if I came in?
You won'’t find me very good company, I'’m afraid.
Quentin, I had no idea that Maggie would leave
because of me.
Can'’t everyone see how different I am from my sister?
Well, the resemblance is a bit striking.
But it'’s only superficial.
Even though we were twins, we were always so different.
She had an inner radiance
that was reflected in her every movement.
People were enchanted with her.
I know what you mean.
It wasn'’t easy being her sister, believe me.
No, I can imagine.
Everything was so easy for her
and nothing, nothing was easy for me,
especially imitating Angelique,
and I tried to do that, believe me.
What woman wouldn'’t want to be all that she was?
Oh, forgive me.
Why didn'’t you stop me immediately?
It'’s all right.
How very deeply you must have loved her.
Believe me, no one knows more than I
how extraordinary she was.
You know, it was the last thing I intended to do
when I came downstairs,
to talk about her,
and here I am.
Well, it'’s quite all right.
I know you, naturally, would want to talk about your sister.
Please, I know it'’s none of my business, but...
Shouldn'’t you go and try to find Maggie?
Probably.
ALEXIS: She'’s your wife.
If you don'’t mind, I don'’t want to talk about it.
Of course.
My talents are the exact opposite of my sister'’s.
She could do no wrong, whereas I...
If you'’ll forgive my abruptness,
it'’s one of my less attractive qualities.
Well, I'’m not so sure.
Well, before you go,
why don'’t you let me arrange for a car
for you in the morning?
I'’m quite sure you'’ll want one.
You'’ll want to go into town.
ALEXIS: That won'’t be necessary.
Well, you'’ll want to see your father, I know.
I want to do that least of all.
That'’s another example of the difference
between Angelique and me.
She was devoted to our father.
She got along famously with him.
He and I have not been in contact for years.
And, I prefer to keep it that way.
As you wish.
But, thank you.
How very thoughtful you are.
Goodnight.
Goodnight.
[screaming]
It'’s a ghost!
It'’s her! Help, someone, a ghost!
QUENTIN: Amy, stop that.
No, it'’s a ghost!
Can'’t you see her?
QUENTIN: Amy, stop that, now!
This is Angelique'’s twin sister, Alexis.
Now, stop that screaming, and come down here.
No.
I saw her in the casket myself.
All right, now, that'’s enough.
Now, come down here.
I want you to meet Alexis.
Alexis, this is my cousin, Amy.
ALEXIS: Hello, Amy.
Her name'’s not Alexis. It'’s Angelique.
QUENTIN: Amy.
Now, I don'’t want to be impatient with you.
Now, you'’ve got to understand what I'’m telling you.
This is Angelique'’s twin sister, Alexis.
Now, you'’re being very rude.
Quentin, it'’s so understandable.
Perhaps I should go on up to my room,
and you can explain it to Amy.
Goodnight, Amy.
I'’m so sorry I frightened you.
[haunting music]
Daniel said she'’d come back,
but I didn'’t believe it.
Amy, why won'’t you believe what I'’m telling you?
Because I heard you.
Oh, I'’m sorry.
I didn'’t mean to listen, but I couldn'’t help it.
You and Maggie were talking so loudly,
and I didn'’t like what I heard anyway.
I heard Maggie say that she was leaving.
Did she?
Yes, she did.
Of course, she did.
But, that'’s because Angelique came back
and made her go away.
No, that isn'’t how it happened.
Please?
Please make Maggie come back.
Daniel doesn'’t like her, but I do.
Amy, now this isn'’t something
you should concern yourself with.
Please?
Now, listen to me.
I want you to go upstairs and go to bed
and go to sleep.
But, she'’s up there.
Amy, you'’re getting a little too old
for this kind of nonsense.
Now, I want you to go upstairs and go to sleep.
All right. I'’ll go.
But, please promise me that you'’ll make Maggie come back.
-Amy, goodnight. -Please?
All you'’ve got to do is ask her, and she will.
I can remember the way that she looked at you.
She'’d do anything that you asked her to.
Goodnight, Amy!
All right. Goodnight.
QUENTIN VOICEOVER: I will not go after her.
It has to be her decision, completely.
It has to be. I will not go after her.
[dramatic music]
[clock chiming]
Operator?
This is a person-to-person call.
Mrs. Collins.
Maggie Collins.
No, don'’t cancel the call.
I'’ll talk to her sister.
Hello, Jennifer?
This is Quentin.
Maggie isn'’t there?
Well, would you tell her I'’d like to speak with her?
Now, tell her I insist on talking to her.
Look, how does she expect us to end this stupid quarrel
unless she talks to me?
Well, look...
Would it help any if I came to New York?
Well, what does she want me to do?
All right.
Jennifer, you tell her that I love her,
and I'’ll be waiting for her.
Yes, Alexis is here,
and she'’s going to stay here
until she meets her nephew, Daniel.
Goodbye.
[dramatic music]
Exactly what are you trying to say?
For a moment, I thought that prophecy of yours
had come true.
BRUNO: What prophecy?
Remember when you used to say
that she would come back?
That Angelique would find a way of coming back?
BRUNO: And now you think she has?
Not at all.
Not at all.
But what do you think?
BRUNO: Well, how can I think anything?
I haven'’t even seen this vision of yours.
But you'’re not even curious.
Is that why you came here this morning so early?
To check out my curiosity level?
No, no, no. I only mentioned what I had seen
because I thought it might interest you.
But there is something that does interest me.
You mean, you want me to come back to the lab again
so you can go to work on your experiment?
Perhaps, maybe.
No, I only thought that, uh,
that I need that address book of Angelique'’s.
The one in the room?
Well, why don'’t you just walk in and take it?
No, no, no.
I tried that.
I tried that, but Chris Collins discovered me there,
and I don'’t think I want to go through that
embarrassment again.
So, uh...
You want me to steal it for you, is that it?
Well, I just wanted to,
to borrow it, temporarily.
I understand.
Can you get it for me?
The fee, it will be unusually generous?
Of course.
But, can you get it for me?
BRUNO: Quentin, good morning.
I don'’t believe I heard you knock.
I don'’t believe I have to knock on my own door.
Cyrus, would you excuse us, please?
I want to talk to Bruno alone.
Of course, of course.
We will be in touch, Bruno?
Probably.
All right, I'’ll give you one hour to pack your things
and get off my property.
And I'’ll give you exactly one minute to get off of mine.
QUENTIN: Oh, god, please spare me
that arrogance and argument.
Oh, gladly, but, uh...
Will you kindly take a look at this, first?
I anticipated your visit, and I kept it ready.
A deed, signed by your late wife,
giving me sole possession of this cottage.
A true patroness of the arts,
in appreciation for all the compositions
I dedicated to her.
I'’m working on one right now.
Would you like to hear it?
This is a fraud.
BRUNO: Sorry...
No such luck.
We'’re neighbors, and you may as well accept it.
I'’ll have Chris look into this immediately.
BRUNO: Chris is a very clever lawyer,
and it should take him no time at all
to convince you that my claim is legitimate.
We shall see, Bruno.
Oh, Quentin...
I understand you have a rather remarkable visitor.
QUENTIN: No. Now, who told you that?
Well, I understand that she bears
a striking resemblance to Angelique.
Twins usually do resemble each other,
or haven'’t you heard?
BRUNO: She'’s a twin?
Angelique'’s twin?
[chuckles] You know, Bruno,
I wouldn'’t make myself too comfortable here, if I were you,
until Chris has had the chance to investigate that deed.
And, in the meantime,
whatever goes on up at the house,
who comes, who goes,
is of no concern to you.
BRUNO: Oh, Quentin?
Does that include your wife?
I understand she left last night.
Her twin?
This I'’ve got to see.
[knocking]
[knocking]
She'’s upstairs in her room.
Who'’s upstairs in her room?
Quentin says her name'’s Alexis.
Now, how do you know who I came to see?
Well, you always used to come to see her.
Alexis? I'’ve never even met her.
Oh, yes, you have.
Go upstairs.
You'’ll see.
I wonder if they'’ll make you call her Alexis, too.
[suspenseful music]
[playing "Ode to Angelique" on piano]
[knocking]
Come in.
[stops playing piano]
Don'’t stop, keep playing.
May I ask what you'’re doing here?
Well, until a moment ago,
I was listening to a song of mine.
My name is Bruno.
Oh, of course.
I'’m so sorry, I didn'’t know.
How do you do?
I like your music very much.
Thank you.
It was one of your sister'’s favorites.
Well, yes, I can understand why.
There was one passage where she invariably made a mistake.
Would you mind giving it a try?
Maybe you'’re better than your sister.
Playing the music in front of the composer?
I'’d be too embarrassed.
I play nothing but mistakes.
Won'’t you even try?
I'’m afraid it would be useless.
Did you want anything else?
What makes you ask that?
Because you keep standing there, staring at me.
I'’m terribly sorry.
As a matter of fact, there'’s a book I wanted to borrow.
Oh, well, all the books are downstairs in the library.
Well, this is a special one.
It belonged to your sister, Angelique.
It was her address book, as a matter of fact.
There are some numbers in it
of some friends that we had in common.
Do you mind if I borrow it?
No, I... I suppose not.
It seems that you and she were very close,
very dear friends, hmm?
Very.
Here it is.
You'’re sure you don'’t mind?
No, as long as you think Angelique wouldn'’t have minded.
Oh, I'’m sure she wouldn'’t have, at all.
How rude of me.
I forgot to say welcome to Collinwood.
-Thank you. -I live on the, uh,
cottage in the estate.
Your sister deeded me the property before she died.
Please, come visit me anytime you like.
Well, thank you.
BRUNO: Will you be staying long?
For a few days.
Daniel is away, and I wanted to stay and meet him.
Of course. He is your nephew,
and very much your sister'’s son, as you'’ll soon see.
Oh, where have you been, Miss Stokes,
that I'’ve never had the pleasure of meeting you before?
Well, I'’ve been living in Florence for the past few years.
I suppose I'’ll go back to New York after I leave here.
Back to New York?
I'’m afraid that I'’m a little confused.
You say that you came from Florence,
but you'’re going back to New York?
I sailed from Genoa,
and I docked in New York before coming here.
Of course.
How is the weather in New York?
When was it? Yesterday?
The day before.
I suppose it was warmer there than here.
Well, yes.
But not much.
Well, we'’ll catch up. We always do.
[suspenseful music]
Well, Chris, it'’s got to be a fraud,
or a forgery or something.
Angelique couldn'’t do a thing like that.
Are you positive?
We can'’t do anything.
Well, stick to it.
We'’ve got to get that parasite off of my property.
[phone receiver slams]
[suspenseful music] A telegram?
When did this come?
AMY: While you were out.
Who opened it?
I couldn'’t help it.
I figured it was from Maggie,
and I wanted to know if she was coming back.
She says, she isn'’t sure.
She says she wants time to think it over.
Amy, you, uh...
You know what you did was very wrong.
I know.
But what about what she did?
Alexis or whoever she is.
Maggie may not come back because of her.
At least I'’m not as bad as she is.
[playing "Ode to Angelique" on piano]
Now, I expect that you can go on with
that famous experiment of yours.
Possibly.
Thank you, thank you very much.
Don'’t thank me, thank a certain young lady.
You saw her?
What was your impression of her?
Well, she bears a striking resemblance to Angelique,
her twin sister.
CYRUS: That'’s who she is?
Who else would she be, Cyrus?
I'’m sure I don'’t know.
Do you?
Of course not, Cyrus.
Of course not.
Thank you for the book.
Thank you.
Operator?
Operator, could you get me the number
of a travel agency in New York?
Almost any one will do.
Anyone that would have information
about ships docking in New York from Genoa in the past week.
That'’s right.
From Genoa.
["Ode to Angelique" piano music]
[stops playing piano]
Alexis, what'’s wrong?
I don'’t know.
Maybe it'’s the music.
Maybe it'’s this room.
Her room.
I just don'’t know.
QUENTIN: I understand.
