NARRATOR: There are many people

who come to Collinwood to control the lives of others.

But this night, Charles Delaware Tate

has learned that he can do far more

than control other people.

Incredibly, with nothing more than pencil and paper,

he can create them.

And as he gazes at the man to whom he gave existence,

Charles Tate is filled with nameless terror.

[ dramatic music ]

How did you get here?

No, don't, don't come any nearer!

Don't!

All right!

No, I created you, and I can destroy you!

Yes, I can destroy you!

[ paper rustling ]

No, I drew you on this piece of paper.

I drew you and you're, you're still here!

What, what are you?

What are you?

[ dramatic orchestral music ]

[ eerie music ]

What do you mean?

AMANDA: He did create me.

Amanda, what are you saying?

Oh, Tim, I don't expect you or anyone to believe it,

but now somehow my life makes a crazy kind of sense.

Amanda, the things you've been telling me just now

make no sense at all.

Then why can I remember nothing

before that first day he sketched me?

The reasons why you cannot remember your past

may be lost in obscurity, but they certainly have nothing

whatever to do with Mr. Charles Delaware Tate!

The man's conceit must be simply incredible

for him to imagine that he can--

He's not imagining!

Tim, I have proof!

I saw him create someone else.

You saw what?

He sketched a man, and--

and suddenly the creature appeared in the room

exactly as he was on paper!

Now let me get this straight,

you say that the sketch he made right there

suddenly simply became a man in the very room?

Yes, I saw him!

Mmm hmm.

Amanda.

Amanda, you and I are going

to pay a little visit to Mr. Tate.

Right now.

CHARLES: Tell me what you fear, tell me!

You better tell me--

[ knocking ]

[ door thudding ]

[ lock clicking ]

[ knocking ]

[ paper rustling ]

[ knocking ]

Mr. Shaw, what a surprise.

You're not surprised at all, Tate, you know why I'm here.

Amanda, come on in.

Nothing's going to happen to you.

I don't know why anything should happen to someone

as pretty as Miss Harris.

The last time she was here she saw you create a man.

She, she saw me do what?

TIM: She saw a sketch that you did come to life.

Listen, if she told you that,

I think you better take her to a doctor, not here.

She been under a strain lately?

What have you done with him?

I haven't done anything with him.

Except for the three of us, we're alone.

I'd like to find that out for myself, if you don't mind.

CHARLES: Well, I do mind.

I don't like people poking around my studio.

However, since your accusation is so bizarre.

There was a man!

And that young lady's state of mind is so extraordinary,

be my guest, look as much as you like.

Look in his sketch pad, that's where it was!

There's a sketch of you here!

Well, of course there is, Reverend Trask commissioned me

to do a portrait of Miss Harris.

No, you mustn't paint me!

Look Mr. Shaw, now I've put up with your suspicions,

I've let you look all through my studio and.

Look at both of you, you didn't find anything,

you didn't find a sketch

and you didn't find a man, did ya?

No, no I didn't.

All right, how long are you going to continue

to believe the unbelievable?

Look, if you're really a friend of hers,

why don't you take her where she can really get some help?

She needs it.

Now I've got a lot of work to do.

He's lying!

I saw the sketch, I saw the man!

Amanda, we'd better go.

Oh, Tim, you've got to believe me!

Tim, look.

- AMANDA: Look! - Mr. Tate?

CHARLES: Yes, what is it?

Your work will have to wait.

[ doorknob rattling ]

Let's just see what's behind this door, Mr. Tate.

Shall we?

[ suspenseful orchestral music ]

Look, there is no one in there now,

it's just a closet.

I've got a few clothes and some supplies in it, that's all.

We'll be glad to find that out for ourselves.

Give me the key.

I don't have it.

Mr. Tate, I have a g*n.

Surely you have a key.

Yeah, yeah, I have it.

AMANDA: Be careful!

[ lock clicking ]

[ Amanda screams ]

That's the man he sketched!

The man he created the way he created me!

Amanda, I'm sorry, I didn't mean it--

Leave me alone!

[ sobbing ]

You really created him?

- CHARLES: Yes. - Just as you created her?

CHARLES: Yes.

Well, how did you do it, what, what happens?

I don't know, it just happens.

Have you, have you made these creatures often?

CHARLES: Perhaps, I don't know.

- Draw me one. - CHARLES: No.

Draw me one right now!

I can't, I...

I'm not gonna do any more.

Now you say that now,

but perhaps when you think about the possibilities.

Look, I have thought about the possibilities,

and it terrifies me.

Well, it doesn't terrify me, oh no!

In fact, it rather fascinates me this,

this creature here fascinates me.

In fact, if you don't draw me one,

I shall simply have to take this one with me.

- CHARLES: No, no! - TIM: Yes!

You can't take him with you!

Oh, yes I can!

Good day to you, Mr. Tate, please do take care of Amanda

but, I'm sure you'll do that!

[ Amanda sobs ]

Yes, I've been expecting you.

The other night you reached the end of one road.

Now you must find another.

I've thought about myself and my life a great deal.

Since,

since...

Since you tried to k*ll Quentin?

I don't want to talk about it.

My dear, you must learn to accept things

for what they truly are.

The fact is, you tried to m*rder Quentin Collins.

You failed.

What happens now?

I'd like to come here and work for you.

For me?

Why?

Because, things go so well for you.

I think I can learn from you

how to make my life over in your image.

That's a rather touching little tribute

you've paid to me, Miss Chavez.

As a matter of fact,

I may need somebody to work for me just now.

My lastaide-de-camp,

decamped under enemy fire.

What can you do?

Look after things.

And people, do whatever they want me to do.

My needs are quite different from ordinary ones.

However, I can assure you

you'll find the rewards far more enduring

than a pleasant room in the servant's quarters,

or even a smile from Quentin Collins.

I don't care about Quentin Collins any more.

Good, if I decide to employ you,

your only devotion must be to me.

Even if it costs you your life!

My life is worth very little to me.

I have decided, I am willing to employ you.

But before you decide,

know and know well that once you say,

"Yes, I will work for you,"

there will be no changing your mind, no turning back.

Because if you do,

I assure you your life will be worth nothing.

And there will be no further nonsense about Quentin Collins.

Now, Miss Chavez, are you willing to accept the situation

under those circumstances?

Think carefully.

There is no need to think.

I've found what I was looking for.

What do I, your creation, do now?

Just let me take care of you.

Marry me, please.

How can you propose to something unreal?

Amanda, you are not unreal!

You can touch.

And you can feel.

- And you can love. - Love?

I can never love anyone,

no one can ever love me.

Give me a chance, Amanda, you'll see.

I've already seen!

I used to wonder what I was like

in the time before I could remember.

I saw that man today unable to speak,

trembling with fear to find himself

in a world where he doesn't belong!

I saw that creature and I saw myself.

Oh, Amanda, that's just nonsense.

Look, look at me!

Oh, you can love!

No!

But I can hate and I hate you, Charles

for finding me and proving to me what I am!

- CHARLES: No. - Yes Charles, I hate you!

Oh, Amanda.

I wish you'd left me alone.

[ door thuds ]

What do you want me to do?

Help me experiment in bridging time.

Do you know anything about I Ching?

Quentin had some wands,

he explained them to me.

They frightened me!

They must frighten you no longer,

because you are going to pass through

one of the doors of change.

And you are going to describe your journey to me.

Is it dangerous?

No one knows what lies beyond the door.

It can be very dangerous.

But dangerous or not,

you will do it because I tell you to!

Is that clear?

Yes.

PETOFI: Very well, now cast the wands, Beth.

Now, Beth, now!

[ wands clatter ]

Now, I will arrange the hexagram.

rd hexagram.

The Po hexagram.

The hexagram of falling.

Falling?

Sit down, Beth.

Words mean nothing until one knows

what lies beyond the door.

Now concentrate.

And be sure you tell me exactly what you see.

I will tell you for the very last time,

there is no turning back!

This hexagram fascinates me.

The top one undivided,

could mean a chariot

waiting to carry the superior man

wherever he wants to go.

Yes, that could be the one.

The hexagram that will take me to the future.

Hurry, my dear!

Concentrate on the door!

Concentrate on opening the door!

Concentrate until your astral body

passes through the door!

[ soft mystical music ]

PETOFI: Can you see the door?

BETH:Yes.

PETOFI:Is it open?

[ hinges squeaking ] BETH:It is opening.

PETOFI:Good, now you must pass through it.

BETH:I am passing through.

PETOFI:Where are you? What do you see?

Tell me what lies on the other side of the door.

[ screaming ]

What is happening?

You must tell me what is happening!

I'm going to k*ll you!

No, you must not do that!

You must tell me what lies beyond the door.

Shadows!

Shadows of what, people?

Only shadows!

I am puzzled by the meaning of shadows.

PETOFI: However.

[ wands clattering ]

However, I had best let you recover yourself for the moment.

Come, my dear, despite your fears,

you've done well.

You will have other chances to serve me.

[ lock clacks ]

TIM: Now look.

I know you understand me.

I know you do.

Yes, you do.

And you can speak.

You could speak if you wanted to.

[ sighs ]

Still afraid.

Well, for the th time there's no reason to be,

there's absolutely no reason to be, I can protect you!

I can keep you out of harm's way for as long as need be!

I promise you.

Yes, yes, you can trust me.

I will protect you.

No harm will come to you at all.

You must, you must simply tell me,

tell me everything you can.

[ gasping ]

Don't be too sure about that, Mr. Shaw!

TIM: How'd you get in?

Well, I was quiet, and you were occupied.

Good timing, Tate.

Just as I've managed to get him to speak.

Yes, he will speak!

Don't be too sure about that!

He's not going to speak...

because I'm going to k*ll him!
