[narrating] - On this night,

not far away from the great house at Collinwood,

one man will live through the most hideous terror that exists;

the terror of madness.

He has witnessed something so monstrous

that he may dwell forever in the dark

and frightening realm of insanity.

[telephone ringing]

- Hello.

- Chris, it's Julia Hoffman.

[Chris] - Hello Dr. Hoffman, what is it?

- Well, I'm at the Collinsport jail with Sheriff Patterson.

- What are you doing there?

- Well, the Sheriff picked up Joe Haskell about an hour ago.

He has him locked in a cell.

I think you'd better come down here right away.

- You want me to come down to the jail?

[Julia] - Well, Joe - Joe keeps talking about you.

You may be the only one who can quiet him down.

He's - he has been hysterical since they brought him in.

[Chris] - What has he been saying?

- Well nothing coherent,

but, the only name he has mentioned so far is yours.

That's why I - I think you'd better get down here

as soon as you can. - All right.

All right, I'll be there as soon as I can.

[eerie music] ♪♪

- Why am I here?

I can't stay here.

I have to go.

I have to tell everyone.

- Tell everyone what, Joe?

- Chris.

I left him in his room.

I don't know where he is.

You've got to find him.

- I - I did find him, Joe.

I called him in his room and he's on his way here now.

- I - I've got to go to Collinwood

and get Amy out of there.

- Why, Joe?

- She must never see it.

- See what?

- She mustn't ever see it! Do you understand?

- Joe,

Joe, we are trying to understand what you're saying,

but it is very difficult.

- Amy's not - not the only one who's in danger.

Everyone is.

- Well, what - what kind of danger, Joe?

- No.

No one should ever see it.

- Joe.

Joe, what - whatever it is you're talking about,

it - it isn't here now, you're with friends,

there is no danger here, Joe.

- Where is Maggie?

but somebody stopped me.

- Doctor, we're not getting anywhere,

we don't know any more now than when we started.

Why don't we just leave him alone?

- Wait.

- Don't be afraid Joe, I'm going to help you sleep.

- No! I don't want to sleep.

I don't want the dreams. The dreams are awful.

- Please Doctor, don't put me to sleep.

I can't take the dreams.

k*ll me, do anything, don't put me to sleep.

- Chris, step outside, please,

I want to ask you some questions.

- I'll - I'll be back in a moment, Sheriff.

- Okay.

Do you have any idea what could have happened to him?

- No.

No, I'm afraid I don't.

- Make any sense out of what he's been saying?

- Why, what's he been saying?

- Well, as near as we can make out,

Joe saw something that was so frightening

that it just sent him off the deep end.

- You think he's crazy?

- Well, he's certainly not himself.

I have known Joe Haskell for a long time.

He has always been a normal, easy-going young man.

I never saw him carry on like this.

Somehow, he's convinced himself

that this whole town is in danger.

- Did he say what kind of danger?

- No. I don't know why.

I thought maybe you could tell me.

- Well, no, why would I know why?

- Well, he mentioned a lot of names.

Yours was the one that came up most often.

He seemed terribly anxious to see you.

- Well, obviously he wasn't!

- Well, in the state he was in,

I'm not sure even recognized you when you came in.

[Chris] - Yeah, I guess you're right, he --

he didn't know who I was.

[Sheriff] - What was he talking about when he said,

"I've still got the g*n."

[Chris] - I don't know.

It didn't make any sense to me.

[Sheriff] - Me either.

He wasn't carrying any g*n when he was brought in here.

- Joe, no matter what happens, you have got to get out of here!

- When what happens? - Never mind.

You'll know soon enough.

- Chris -- - Don't talk.

I tried to get you out of here and you had to stay!

All right, stay.

- What's the matter?

- It's the pain.

It will go away in a minute.

I won't even know it until the next time that it happens.

Joe, don't forget the g*n!

- The g*n? - Pick it up.

He jumped down from the balcony.

- Joe, what was it that you thought that you saw?

- I did see it.

I was there when it happened to Chris.

- Do you think Chris wants to k*ll us?

- Yes.

the thing he becomes, the monster.

- Monster?

- Oh, you don't believe me?

- Sleep Joe, you're very tired.

- Keep that thing away from me. - You need sleep, Joe.

- Weren't you gonna say hello, Joe?

when I just saw you at Collinwood?

- Chris, what happened at Collinwood?

I really haven't been there in a long time.

- Don't you remember my coming to your room?

it was sure a frightening experience.

- Yes, it was.

- Oh, it must have started that night at Maggie's house

when I was attacked.

- Joe, you were attacked?

- Oh, yes.

Well, yeah, that part of it wasn't a dream.

That really happened.

- Well, who attacked you?

- It was this animal.

An animal that walked like a man.

I had to struggle with it.

I ripped off part of the shirt it was wearing.

See, it matched one of yours.

When I took it to your room, to show it to you,

you turned into a wolf.

- Oh, Joe, that was a bad dream.

Well, you can see I'm - I'm just the same as I ever was.

- No, you - you haven't changed.

- No, not a bit. Of course not.

- What are you - what are you doing here in the mausoleum?

- Oh Joe, you're still trembling.

- You didn't answer my question.

I want to know what you're doing at this place,

so late at night.

- Well, I'm surprised you have to ask that.

- What do you mean?

Oh, I mean, I'm always out at night,

you know that.

- No, I don't know that.

You were in your room last night, the night before.

- My room? - Yes!

At the Collinsport Inn.

- Oh!

Oh, I see.

Yes, I see. Joe, I think --

I think you didn't have a nightmare after all.

- What - what are you saying?

- Well, that's it, oh, of course.

I don't know why I didn't think of that.

This is just a - just a simple case of mistaken identity.

- Chris, you're not making any sense.

- You always did have trouble

telling us brothers apart didn't you, Joe?

- Telling - telling you apart?

- That's right.

I'm not Chris, I'm Tom.

But the shot I gave him should have kept him sleep

until morning.

- Why didn't it work?

- Obviously, the dream he had, frightened him so

nothing could have kept him asleep.

- Well, what are we going to do with him now?

- I called Wyndcliffe.

I'll take him there in the morning.

Chris - Chris, there is no reason for you to stay now,

why don't you go home?

- No, I'll - I'll just stay here with him

until you have to take him away.

- Chris, don't take it so hard.

There is nothing that you could have done.
