- The second night of a full moon
shining over the great house of Collinwood,
a night marked for tragedy.
For in the village, one man has watched his cousin turn
from a human being into a mad, vicious animal,
[howling]
an animal which only the night before tried to k*ll him,
and having escaped, he has only one thing he must do.
The shock and horror have robbed him of his reason
and sent him on a mad mission which must necessarily end
in disaster, perhaps for more people than anyone realizes.
- But why didn't you send for me?
Why didn't Barnabas?
Vicki gone, my mother's--
- Carolyn, everything happened so quickly.
There was nothing you could do for Vicki.
Nothing any of us could do.
- My mother?
Is there anything anyone can do for her?
- Do you want me to answer that as a doctor?
There's nothing physically wrong with your mother.
- Yet you think she's going to die?
- No, she thinks she is.
That's more to the point.
That's wrong.
I should phrase it more carefully.
She thinks we will all believe her to be dead,
but she will not be.
- How does something like that start?
- I don't know.
The doctors at Wyncliffe managed to find out.
The reports show that she doesn't really remember when
it started to happen or why.
- I want to see her. - Yes, you must.
- Now.
Carolyn.
- I don't like to offer any advice about how you should act
with your mother, but I do think that you really should
be a little less emotional.
It will help her.
I don't mean for you to be callous or anything.
- Yes, I understand.
- And don't forget that all this happened a few months ago,
and then she seemed to forget it.
Perhaps the same thing will happen now and...
We all hope so.
[theme music]
- No.
Don't wake her.
- No.
No, she'll wake up shortly.
It's as if she's afraid to sleep for long.
- She looks so peaceful.
It's impossible even to guess of the agony in her mind.
- Carolyn, come, I'll help you unpack.
- [SINGING] Rock-a-bye, baby, on the treetop.
When the wind blows, the cradle will rock.
When the bough breaks, the cradle
will fall, and down will come baby--
- Amy?
Amy?
- Have you come to see her, too?
- Who?
- I was in bed and I heard a voice telling me to come here.
Did you hear the voice, too?
- I don't know.
I must have.
We'd better go back.
- No, no.
She wants to see us.
- Who are you talking about?
[laughing]
- Cassandra.
Amy?
- She can't save you, Mrs. Stoddard.
- Amy, you go back to the house.
- She will leave you soon enough.
- Go now.
- She can't, not unless I tell her to.
You must know of my powers by now, Mrs. Stoddard.
- You have no powers over either of us.
- You may leave now, Amy.
- No.
- Go on, Amy.
Go on.
You must leave Mrs. Stoddard now.
She and I have an account to settle.
- Amy!
- You can feel it happening now, can't you?
You're beginning to think of death again, aren't you?
Just as I told you you would.
Death is the only thing you can think of.
And the closer I come to you, the nearer you are to it.
- Don't come near me.
Don't come any nearer.
- But I must touch you.
And when I do, it'll be as though you are dead.
I promised you that.
- No!
No!
- There is nothing you can do about it now.
Amy will disappear from you, and I will come closer...
And closer...
[screaming]
- And closer...
And closer...
[screaming]
- Julia!
It's my mother.
Mother?
- You shouldn't be up.
- I have to.
I have to.
I can't stay here.
I can't be in this room.
- What is it, mother?
- Oh, darling, a dream, a terrible nightmare.
- Lie down, Mrs. Stoddard.
I'll give you a sedative.
- No.
I can't go back to sleep again.
I can't.
She'll come back.
- Who will come back?
Who, Mrs. Stoddard?
- I don't know.
- Mother, you said "she."
- I don't remember.
- Come.
Lay down in bed.
- Oh, Carolyn, what a homecoming for you.
- Oh, mother, you're going to be all right.
I'll-- I'll stay here and I'll look after you.
I'll see that nothing happens to you, I promise.
- Will you go and see if Amy is all right?
- Yes, yes, of course, Mrs. Stoddard.
- I'm afraid for her, but I don't know why.
I don't know why.
- Tom, Chris, and you.
Save her.
Yes.
Save her.
- Joe!
- Amy, don't talk.
Don't talk now. Be quiet.
- Why are you packing my clothes?
- We're going.
- To Chris?
What's wrong, Joe?
I just asked if we were going to Chris.
Is that where you're taking me?
Is it? - We're going away.
- Where?
- Anywhere.
Anywhere away from here.
Far away from here.
- Without Chris?
- You're not going to be like him.
You're not going to be like either of them.
Tom or him.
See, I'm going to see to that.
I'm going to see to that.
- I don't want to go.
- Don't you start-- don't you start crying.
Don't you cry, you hear me?
Listen, Amy.
Amy, it's all settled.
It's all settled.
You always-- you always liked me, Amy, right?
- Yes. - OK, don't be afraid.
Don't be afraid now.
I'm going to go get your coat.
- But Mrs. Stoddard and Maggie...
They won't want me to go out dressed like this.
- You won't see either of them.
- But I have to say goodbye.
- Shh!
It's OK.
It's OK.
- Joe, I don't want to go with you.
- You're going. You're going.
- You're acting so strange.
Honest, you are.
Joe, I don't want to go with you.
- You've got to go!
Listen to me!
You know what's going to happen?
Huh?
You wonder what you're going to find out?
Look, I'm sorry.
I'm sorry, Amy.
You'll never know that.
I'm going to see to that.
Whatever happens to us, Amy, you're never going to find out.
You understand?
You're never going to find out!
Never! - Ow!
- Never!
- Your heartbeat's a little fast but no more
than if you were nervous or excited about something.
Oh, Mrs. Stoddard, I wish you'd let me give you something.
- Please, mother.
Why not?
- I cannot go to sleep again.
I can't. - Mother--
- I know what's best for me.
Please, go and see about Amy.
You promised you'd do anything I asked you to.
- Yes, I'll go.
Of course.
- Julia, Amy's run away.
- No.
- What do you mean?
- No, no, she's not run away.
- Well, what's happened to her?
Julia, where are you going?
- David.
David, they're great friends.
- What do you mean?
- I don't know.
- What am I going to tell my mother?
- Lie to her.
- No.
- You don't want to upset her now, do you?
If she realizes that her feelings were right about Amy,
what about her feelings about herself?
- Julia...
- You go to your mother's room and you tell her
that Amy is asleep.
Then go downstairs.
If Amy is not with David, I will be there.
- Come on, hon, don't. Don't, please.
Amy, look, I've got to get you out of here.
- Is Amy all right?
Is she asleep?
- Yes, of course, mother.
- Are you sure?
- Of course, I'm sure.
Are you feeling better now?
- Would you do me a favor and read to me?
I'm afraid to go to sleep.
- Yes, of course, I will.
Um, there is something I should do first.
I won't be a moment.
- Everything all right?
- Everything is all right.
- Amy?
Amy?
- Julia?
What are we going to do?
- Go and wake Mrs. Johnson and Harry.
Have her check the back of the house and sent Harry outside.
I'll keep looking here.
- All right.
- Mrs. Stoddard.
- You did this.
- Oh, you give me too much credit.
- Where is she?
Tell me.
Where is she?
- You lost her in the dream, too, didn't you?
And then I came closer to you.
And closer.
- No.
No. No!
- Yes.
It's coming true, Mrs. Stoddard.
It's all coming true.
- Let me down!
- No.
- Joe, please!
- Amy. - Please.
- Amy, please, listen to me.
Just listen to me. I'm doing this for you.
- Let me down!
- Amy, Amy, I'm sorry. I'm sorry.
Amy? - What?
- Shh.
Hear that?
Shh.
Listen.
See?
He knows.
He knows I have you.
You can't have her.
You don't want her.
My God, don't you realize it's little Amy?
Do you hear me? She's with me!
You want her to see?
Do you?
You want-- Amy?
Amy!
- Are you sure he's not in his room?
Well, give me the room clerk, please.
Hello? Hello?
This is Dr. Julia Hoffman.
I'm trying to get in touch with Mr. Chris Jennings.
Is there a little girl waiting there for him?
About nine years old?
It's his little sister, Amy.
You haven't seen her?
Thank you.
Hello, operator?
I want the police.
Amy!
Amy, what's happened? Where have you been?
We've been so worried about you.
Joe.
- Let go of her.
- Don't let him!
Don't!
- Amy, go up to Maggie's room.
- No, no, no.
- Right now, Amy.
- She's coming with me.
- Joe, what's the matter with you?
- She's coming with me.
- No! - Amy!
Amy!
- Joe...
Joe, let her alone.
- No, you don't understand.
- Perhaps if you tell me about it,
I'll understand and let you take her.
- The animal...
The animal...
You don't know, but she'll know.
- Know what?
- She'll find out.
She'll find out.
And she'll...
Oh, no!
I've got to-- I've got to get to her.
She's got to get away.
I'm the only-- I'm the only one who knows her.
I'm the only one-- we've got to get her out of here.
I'll take her out.
The animal.
The animal in that room.
- Joe, whatever attacked you in that room
is not a threat to Amy in this house, Joe.
- You don't know.
You don't know at all.
- Joe?
Joe, Joe, listen to me.
Joe, stop it.
Joe, listen to me!
I'm sorry, Joe.
[screaming]
- Wait.
Wait, wait, wait here a moment.
- I found her here.
- Why can't I speak?
Why can't I move?
Why can't I somehow let them know?
- I'm...
I'm sorry, Carolyn.
Your mother's dead.
- No.
No!
- I'm not.
I'm not!
I must move.
I must make them hear.
I'm not dead!
