- There is a storm raging over the great house of Collinwood,

a storm that cannot shut out the sounds of the widows' wailing.

For theirs is a legend, that when death is near,

the widows rise from the dead and commence

their wait for the one who is to die.

[thunder]

- The only way you can join him is to die...

to die...

to die...

- Vicki!

[scream]

- Stay away from me!

Stay away! - No.

Let go of me. - No.

If you run towards her, you may force her to jump.

I mean it, Mrs. Stoddard.

I know about these things.

Vicki.

Miss Winters, listen to me.

Listen, please.

[theme music]

- Vicki, please.

- Come here, Miss Winters.

- I love him.

- We will help you.

- We can.

- I want to be with him.

- Please, Vicki.

- Don't come nearer.

- Vicki, would he want you to do this?

Would he?

Did he ask you to do it?

He wants you to live.

- But I can't.

Without him, I can't.

- Jeff Clark is not responsible for you standing there.

- Stay where you are.

- You must realize that.

I know you're angry at me because of what I told you.

- Please, listen to him. - But there may be another way.

You must wait for word from him.

He's trying to reach you, Vicki.

He's trying.

You believe that. - Why?

You don't. - It doesn't matter, if you do.

Let him tell you what to do.

- Please let him, Vicki.

- Please come in.

- Oh, well, I...

I shouldn't.

- I wish you would.

- You're frightened.

- The house seems so gloomy tonight.

Or maybe it's just me.

That poor girl at the Blue Whale.

I didn't really even pay very much attention to her

when she was serving us drinks yesterday.

What a terrible way to die.

- Carolyn, I-- I really should be getting back to town.

- W-- would you like a drink?

A brandy? - No.

No thanks.

- Please?

Just stay, un-- until someone comes.

I really don't want to be alone.

- OK.

- The animal that k*lled that girl is the same one who

attacked my mother.

I know it.

I just can't understand any of it.

For an animal to break through a window

to have gotten to that girl is--

Chris.

Chris, you're not listening to me.

- Yes. Yes, I am.

- You certainly don't seem to be.

- Well, I think I'm just-- just more upset about the girl

than-- than even you are.

- Did you know her? - Oh, no.

I didn't-- I didn't know her.

- You certainly are very difficult to figure out.

- Don't even try.

- Are you challenging me?

- No.

No.

I'm not.

Good night, Carolyn.

Oh, I said I'd stay.

I'm-- I'm being rather rude, I guess.

- There's not much point of being both rude and mysterious.

They amount to the same thing.

Chris, you just-- you just don't want anyone to know you.

Why?

- Carolyn, thank goodness.

Is Julia Hoffman here?

- No. I don't think so.

What's the matter? - It's Vicki.

I'll explain later.

- You should've let me.

You should've let me.

- Upstairs, to her room.

Vicki, It's going to be all right.

It's going to be all right.

- Was it-- was it that animal?

Was Vicki attacked?

- No, not attacked, except by fate.

- Cry as much as you want to, dear.

You'll feel better.

Vicki, I know this must be terrible for you.

I'm trying very hard to understand.

- I know you are.

[knocking]

- Well, that must be Professor Stokes.

Shall I send him away? - No. No.

I simply can't go on and cry.

- I owe you an apology, Ms. Winters.

I should never have said some of the things I did.

- No, I should have listened to you.

I panicked, that's all.

I thought I would never see him again, unless...

Look!

Look!

- It's only the wind.

You're suddenly so silent.

- The watch.

It was at : yesterday when the little hand

started to move.

But now it's back at : again.

- Please, Vicki, don't.

You must stop thinking of Jeff.

- He's all I ever think about.

He's here!

Look, the watch has started again.

- There's-- there's no one else in this room.

Professor, you have certain psychic powers.

Do you feel anyone here?

Well, do you?

- I'm not sure.

- Oh, tell her.

Tell her there's no one here.

- I can't, Mrs. Stoddard.

- It doesn't matter.

I know that Jeff is here.

Don't leave me, until you tell me what am I to do.

Oh, Jeff.

You can't keep putting me through this.

What should I do?

Tell me, somehow.

[whirring]

- What is it?

- An astral manifestation.

- It's Jeff!

It's Jeff!

No!

The watch has stopped.

You saw it.

You saw that.

Well, now you know it's not my imagination.

Now you know that he has been trying to reach me.

Oh, but why can't he do it?

Why?

- I think I may know a way to find out.

- How? - Stay with her.

- Oh, you must tell me how.

- I will, as soon as I decide if it is advisable.

I'll be back.

- Vicki.

Vicki, I'm sorry.

I'm so very sorry that I ever doubted you.

- It's Jeff.

I know it is.

I wish we could do something for her,

but just doesn't seem to want any help.

I don't understand her.

Professor, is Vicki feeling better?

- Yes. Yes.

This room will do.

I don't believe we've met. - I'm Chris Jennings.

- Oh, I'm sorry.

- I never mind introducing myself.

Timothy Stokes, sir. - Hi.

How are you?

- I'm greatly in need of a favor from you.

- What?

- It's vitally important that another man

be present, in case the spirit wishes to speak through him.

- What are you talking about?

- Oddly enough, a spirit often prefers

to speak through one of its own sex when it requires a voice.

Pretty understandable.

You don't mind, do you?

- Well, if I knew what was going on, I might not mind.

- We intend to hold a seance here.

That table will do.

You will help us, won't you?

- Chris.

- No.

- Why?

Are you afraid?

- No, I'm not afraid.

I don't believe in all that stuff.

- Then you must stay and learn, as we all have.

I told you we needed your help.

We stopped Ms. Winters from k*lling herself tonight

but she will try again, unless Jeff Clark forbids it.

- You must stay, Chris.

You must.

- A seance?

I...

I don't think I can agree to that.

- I'm afraid it's the only way, Mrs. Stoddard.

- Vicki, I won't let you go through it.

You know what happened the last time.

I can't let you take that chance.

- If I go back to the past, then that is what he wants.

- No.

- How soon can we start, Professor?

- I was afraid before the first one we had, too.

- Oh, come on, Carolyn.

You know I'm not afraid.

- Why are you so nervous then?

- I don't know. I don't know.

There's just something about this whole business.

I don't like it.

I don't like it, that's all.

Oh, Vicki.

- It's very kind of you to go through this with me.

- Well, we're just sorry it has to be this way.

- But it does.

It does.

- Mr. Jennings, would you make sure the windows are securely

closed?

If one is loose and blows open, we

might mistake it for a manifestation

of a psychic nature.

Ms. Winters, will you sit at the end of the table?

Carolyn, here.

Mrs. Stoddard, between them.

And Mr. Jennings, here.

Now, the lights.

- Don't worry, Mrs. Stoddard.

I want whatever's going to happen to happen.

- Let's place our hands on the table.

Fingers must touch.

This is a most important contact and must not

be broken, no matter what happens.

You must clear your minds of all thoughts that

may interfere with our finding the spirit we must.

We must all wish the spirit to appear.

And you must all accept him when he comes.

Jeff Clark, we are hunting you, begging you to come here,

to appear before us.

We know that you were in this room tonight.

We know that you are trying to communicate with your wife.

If you cannot speak, talk to her through one of us.

- What was that?

They've started again.

- Jeff Clark, we are calling you.

We need your help.

If you can hear us, give us a sign.

Give us a sign.

- Please, Jeff.

Please.

- There is a presence in this room.

Is it you, Clark?

Are you here?

- No.

No.

He's not.

He's not.

- If there is a spirit here, tell us who you are

and why you came here.

- Mrs. Stoddard!

- Oh, someone turned my head.

A hand, as if to see me.

I could feel eyes staring at me.

- Do you want to end the seance now, Mrs. Stoddard?

- No.

No.

She's gone.

- She?

You felt it was a woman?

- I felt it was a woman's hand.

Please go on, Professor Stokes.

- Whoever is in this room, tell us what you want.

We will help you find rest.

Speak to us.

Speak to us.

[whining] - Carolyn.

- Let her be. - But she's--

- No, she's all right.

[crying]

- I heard the widows wailing.

- Is that why you came here?

- You must...

You must...

- What must we do?

What?

- You must stop him.

- Who must we stop?

Who?

- He must not come back.

- Are you talking about Jeff Clark?

- No.

No.

- Who then?

Tell us.

- You must stop them.

He must stay where he is.

- Can you tell us who you are?

- Magda.

- Magda.

What is your last name?

- My curse.

My curse.

- What is your curse, Magda?

[shouting]

- Stop it, Jennings!

- What?

What?

Chris?

- Whoever it was is gone.

- Vicki.

- I should very much like to find out,

Mr. Jennings, why you did that.
