[Victoria narrating] - A séance has been held in the great house of Collinwood.

A séance which has suspended time and space

and sent one girl on an uncertain

and frightening journey into the past,

back to the year .

There, each of the Collins ancestors resembles

the present day member of the Collins family.

But the names and relationships have changed.

And she finds herself a stranger in a sea of familiar faces.

She finds the family gripped by terror,

for unknown to all,

there is one who plots to gain the love of a man.

Thwarted in this, she seeks a terrible vengeance,

the death of an innocent child.

- I'm going to make you pay, Barnabas

for turning away from me

but not through Josette this time.

There is someone else you love --

little Sarah,

your dear little sister.

You are going to watch her suffer, Barnabas,

and seeing her suffer will be the worst agony

you have ever known.

- Twelve princesses live in a castle by the sea.

They were all so beautiful;

the prince didn't know which one to make his bride.

So, he gave each one of them a task to perform

to see which one would make the most suitable wife.

- Mother! - What is it, darling?

- It hurts! Right here, it hurts!

- Here! It hurts here! - Sarah!

- It hurts, Mother! It hurts!

Mother!

- Barnabas! Barnabas!

[eerie music] ♪♪

What did the doctor say?

Surely, he must have said more to you than he did to me.

- No.

- Well, he must be able to do something for her,

he must.

- Mother, remember, what happened to me.

I was ill,

so ill I thought I was going to die

that even the doctor didn't know what was wrong with me.

And suddenly, I -- I recovered.

It was as if I had never been ill at all.

Maybe, the same thing will happen to Sarah.

- I've been -- been unwilling to listen to Abigail's

talk about witchcraft,

but something is going on in this house,

something I don't understand.

- Who would want to harm Sarah?

- I don't know.

I don't know who -- anyone would be that cruel.

- Sarah?

- She's beginning to open her eyes.

- Mother? - I'm right here, darling.

- So, am I.

- What happened to me?

Why do I feel so funny?

Why does everything hurt?

- You have a fever, darling,

but you're going to be all right.

- Of course, you are,

and we're going to stay right here with you when --

until you feel well.

- Where is Ms. Winters?

- She -- she had to go away for a while.

- When is she coming back?

- We don't know.

- Soon? - Perhaps.

- Tell her to come back.

I want to see her.

- Sarah, don't try to sit up.

- But I want Ms. Winters.

- Do you miss her that much?

- Yes. I miss her a lot.

I'm afraid she'll never come back.

- Of course, she will.

- Tell -- tell her to come to me now.

Go get her, Barnabas.

You've got to tell her I want to see her.

You've got to tell her. I've got to talk to her.

- Sarah, lean back.

Now, relax and try to rest.

- All right.

But will you find Ms. Winters?

Will you tell her I want to see her? - Yes.

- Do you promise?

- Yes.

But you must do what I say.

Now, rest, close your eyes and try to sleep.

- Will Ms. Winters be here when I wake up?

- Perhaps. Now, close your eyes.

- All right.

But don't forget your promise.

- I won't forget.

- Barnabas,

you shouldn't have told her that you'd find Ms. Winters.

She will be very upset

when she founds out you've broken your promise.

- I won't break my promise. I will find her.

- How can you find her? No one knows where she is.

- I know where she is. - You do?

- She's in a loft over the stables.

Nathan found her there a few hours ago.

- I'm not sure Ms. Winters should come into this room.

- Why not?

Surely, you don't believe Trask and Aunt Abigail.

You don't believe that Ms. Winters is a witch?

- I don't know what to believe.

- Oh, Mother, you don't mean that.

- Terrible things have been happening here.

What if she is responsible?

- Do you think I would let her come in this room

if I thought for one minute that she might harm Sarah?

- No.

- Then trust me. Trust my judgment.

- All right.

- I'll be back in a moment.

- Mr. Barnabas? - Yes, Ben.

- I -- I just heard about Ms. Sarah.

How is she?

- She's very ill, I'm afraid.

- Is there anything I can do for her?

- No, there's -- there's nothing anyone can do.

[thinking] - There is something I can do

because I know who did this.

It was her, it was that Angelique.

This time, she's gone too far.

She's gotta make Ms. Sarah well again --

or I'll k*ll her!

[knocking on door]

- Ben, what are you doing?

- You -- - Answer me!

What are you looking for?

- Whatever you're hiding here.

- Hiding?

- Don't try to pretend you don't know what's going on.

You know about Ms. Sarah.

- Yes.

I understand she's ill. What about it?

- You made it happen!

You worked one of your spells on her!

- Did I?

- You know you did.

But why hurt her?

That -- that little girl, she never did anythin' to you.

Why are you doin' this to her?

- To get what I want.

- What do you want? - I want Barnabas to suffer.

I want him to come to me willing to do anything

to make Sarah well again.

- And if he doesn't come to you --

you won't just -- let her die, will you?

- I might.

- You are a witch.

No wonder Mr. Barnabas don't want you.

- He will want me, Ben.

In time.

- If he knew what you were doin' to his sister, he'd --

he'd hate you!

He'd k*ll you.

- He'll never know.

Besides, I may decide to let Sarah live.

It would be very simple.

- What do you mean?

- Is this what you're looking for, Ben?

- The doll.

- Yes.

If I decide to remove the pins,

Sarah will be well again. It's as simple as that.

- Do it now.

- No.

No, not yet.

Not until Barnabas comes to me.

- I said, do it now!

Or I'll k*ll you.

- You can't harm me, Ben.

You know I have too much power.

- I'm not afraid of you.

Not now.

Pull out those pins or I'll k*ll you.

I swear I will.

- Stay where you are.

- I'm going to k*ll you. I'm not afraid.

- Listen.

- I'm going to k*ll you. You can't stop me.

- Listen, don't you hear that?

[heart beating] - I don't hear anything.

- Yes, you do.

But you don't know what it is.

Shall I tell you what it is?

It's the sound of your own heartbeat.

- Stop it. - Yes.

You do hear it because it's beating loud enough.

- No!

- And now, you're beginning to feel it.

You feel the beating in your chest.

It's beating so hard it's about to burst.

- Don't! - Listen to it, Ben.

Your heart is going to burst any moment

and you're going to die. - No!

- Only I can spare you. Shall I?

- Please!

- You tried to k*ll me, I ought to let you die.

- Help me, help me.

- Do you promise to obey me from now on? - Yes.

- You swear, Ben? - Yes, yes.

[heartbeat stops]

- You see? I can be merciful.

But next time, I will show you no mercy.

I will allow you to die.

["London Bridges" playing] ♪♪

- Ms. Winters.

- Hello, Mrs. Collins.

- Did anyone see you come in?

- No one saw us. We were very careful.

- How's Sarah?

- She was awake a few moments go.

She was asking for you.

- Ms. Winters.

- Hello, Sarah.

- Is it really you?

- Yes, of course, it is.

- Where have you been?

- I -- I had to go away for a while,

but I'm back now.

- I missed you.

- I missed you, too.

- I was afraid you wouldn't come back,

but I'm glad you did.

- Shall I read to you?

- No.

Tell me a story about Samantha.

Where is she?

- Your doll?

- Yes.

I looked for her this morning, but I couldn't find her.

- I think I can find it for you, Sarah.

- Get it for me, Barnabas. I want her.

- All right.

- I'm glad you came back.

- So am I.

[gasps]

- What is it?

- My chest it hurts.

Why does everything hurt?

- You -- you just lie still.

Close your eyes and -- and try to sleep.

- All right.

But will you tell me story when I wake up?

- Yes, of course, I will.

- Think of a good one.

I like your stories.

- Ms. Winters.

- Yes, Mrs. Collins?

- I owe you an apology.

- What for?

- I didn't think you should come into this room.

For a moment, I thought --

- I was a witch?

- Yes, but only because I was frightened and confused.

Seeing you with Sarah, I know it can't be true.

I know you couldn't do her any harm.

Please forgive me for even thinking.

- Of course.

I just wish there was something I could do for her.

- So do I.

But there's nothing either of us can do.

[knocking on door]

- Barnabas.

- What did you do with the doll?

- Sarah's doll?

- Yes. You picked it up in my room this morning

and you said you were going to take it to the nursery,

but I couldn't find it there.

- Why -- why I put it with all her other toys.

I don't know what could have happened to it.

- Well, I've got to find it.

Sarah is very ill and she's been asking for it.

- Sarah's ill?

What's the matter with her?

- No one knows.

She was fine this morning, and suddenly,

she -- she complained of pains and collapsed.

- Oh, poor child.

You better call a doctor.

- We have, but he doesn't know what's wrong with her,

not unless somebody does something.

I feel she will not live through the day.

- There's no one who can help her?

- Apparently not.

- I might be able to help her.

- You? - Yes.

I might be able to cure her.

♪♪

- You might be able to cure Sarah?

- Possibly.

- You pretend to know more about medicine than a doctor?

- Oh, no, but --

Tell me about her pains.

Where does she feel them?

Here and -- and here?

- Yes. How did you know?

- I had the same illness when I was a child.

I almost died from it.

I would have if my mother hadn't known what to do.

- What?

- She -- she brewed a tea made from special herbs,

and after I drank the tea, I was well again.

- After drinking a cup of tea?

- I know it sounds strange,

but the herbs drove the pain out of my body

and I was cured when --

when everyone else thought I was going to die.

My mother taught me how to brew the tea.

Should I make a cup for Sarah?

- Oh, yes, yes.

I'm willing to try anything, anything at all.

- If I should cure Sarah,

you would be very grateful to me, would you not?

- I'd be indebted to you for the rest of my life.

- There is one way in which you could repay that debt.

- I'd give you anything you want.

- There is one thing I want

more than anything else in the world.

- If you're able to cure Sarah, I'd give it to you.

- I want you to make me your wife.

- My wife?

- Yes.

If I should cure Sarah,

that is the payment I would ask.

Is the price too high?

- No price is too high for Sarah's life.

- Then, if she lives, you will marry me.

You will make me your wife.

- I told you I would do anything for you,

as long as you cure Sarah.

- Then I'll go and brew the tea.

- She's so pale.

I don't think she's going to live.

- Don't say that.

- She can't die, she can't.

- How is she? - Worse, much worse.

Did you call another doctor?

- Yes, he will be here very soon.

- What's that?

- It's some tea that Angelique brewed for Sarah.

She says it has some sort of restorative powers.

- What good would tea do her?

- Well, it can't do her any harm

and I'm willing to try anything.

Sarah, do you hear me?

Drink some of this.

That's right. Drink it.

- Is that you, Barnabas?

- That's right, Sarah.

Now, don't try to move.

- The pains. - No, try not to think about them.

I'll -- I'll tell you a story.

- They've gone.

- What?

- The pains, they've gone. They've gone away.

- Oh, Sarah.

- You served me well, little doll.

Because of you, Barnabas is indebted to me.

And I shall collect the payment for that debt.

I shall become his bride.
