[Victoria narrating] - We have mourned and wept

for those who have passed on.

Our tears have dried,

but our hearts are scarred indelibly.

Life continues,

although our memory serves to freshen the wound.

We are therefore vulnerable to the great shock

that a sudden return can bring.

[music playing, overlapping chatter]

- Burke? - What is it?

- That's Maggie Evans!

It's Maggie Evans!

- No... no...

No!

♪♪

♪♪

[announcer] - Good news! This program, Dark Shadows

is now being presented in color.

- Maggie?

Maggie, it's Vicki.

Can you hear me?

She's alive, I-- I can't believe it.

- Aside from being a little pale, she seems fine.

- I don't understand. How can this be?

- I'm afraid a terrible hoax

has been perpetrated on all of us.

[Burke] - Why do you say hoax?

It might have been a case of mistaken identity.

- That's impossible.

Maggie was alive when they found her.

They said she died later.

She's coming around now.

- [moaning] No... No.

- Maggie, you're all right. You're safe now.

- Who are you?

- I'm Vicki.

Don't you recognize me?

- I think I do. I think I know you.

- Of course you do.

I'm Vicki Winters. I'm your friend.

- Vicki.

Vicki-- I know that name.

Where am I?

- You're in The Blue Whale.

- This place... I've been here before.

- Many times.

- Where is she? Where is she?!

- Who are you talking about?

- The little girl.

She brought me here, she was with me.

- A little girl. - Yes, she was outside.

Please, find her, I need her.

- I'll take a look. - No, you stay here.

I'll go outside and find her.

- You're safe now, Maggie. Nobody can hurt you.

- Yes, safe.

- Where were you?

- Far away.

Somewhere in a place like a-- like a hospital.

There were doctors there.

- What hospital? Where?

- I don't know.

I don't know, there are so many things going through my mind.

- Well, how did you get here?

- The little girl.

She brought me here.

She took me away from that place and brought me here.

I belong here.

[Vicki] - Yes, Maggie, you do belong here.

- Did you find her? - There's no one outside.

- She's not there?

- I'm sorry, but there's no one there at all.

- She's always disappearing.

I never know when she's going to come back.

- Who is she, Maggie?

- My friend. My very best friend.

She's helped me before when I've been in trouble.

- What kind of trouble?

- I don't know.

I don't know, it's... just so much in my mind.

[Burke] - Where were you before the hospital?

- I don't know.

Away... it was far away.

Something about a room. A special room.

- I think her father ought to be contacted right away.

- I don't know where Sam is. Any other night, he'd be here.

- Father?

Yes, I have a father.

Where is he?

- We'll find him for you. You'll see him soon.

- I can almost see him now.

I can almost see him.

- We ought to get her to Dr. Woodard's office right away.

- Yes, I-- I think you ought to take her to...

I-- I will go and tell her father, Mr. Evans,

and-- and tell him the good news.

And then I'll bring him over to Dr. Woodard's office.

- Thank you.

♪♪

- That face.

I know that face from somewhere.

- Of course you do.

You know all of us.

- Come on, Maggie, we're taking you to the doctor,

and then you're going home.

- Yes, I want to go home.

Something terrible happened.

I can almost remember.

I can almost remember it.

♪♪

- Here you are, Maggie.

Now, you wash it down with this.

Now, you'll soon feel better.

- Oh, thank you.

- Maggie, do you recognize me at all?

- Vaguely.

I know I've seen you somewhere before.

- Well, good. That's something.

- What's the matter with me?

- Well, you've, uh, suffered

a temporary loss of memory, that's all.

Otherwise, physically, you seem to be in--

in very good condition.

- What is it about my memory?

Will I ever be able to remember?

- Oh, on the contrary, Maggie, I-- I really think

that your memory's coming back very well now.

Look, you recognize me,

you recognize Vicki and Burke.

- Yes, that's true. - And you even began

to remember things about your father.

Those are all good signs, you know.

I think you're definitely improving.

- There's so many things that I'm starting to remember.

- Good, good. Very good.

Oh, pretty soon, everything will come back to you.

- Doctor, can I talk to you a moment?

- Sure, Burke.

Uh, Vicki, will you stay with Maggie, huh?

- Of course.

- Now, Maggie, in the meantime,

you keep right on talking with Vicki.

I have a feeling it's important that you say

anything and everything that comes into your mind.

All right? Okay.

What is it? - You knew about this all along.

- Yes. - Well, why didn't you tell us?

- I couldn't!

- But you know you could trust me and Vicki.

Does Sam know? - Yes, he knows,

and Joe knows, too.

- Well, they certainly put on a great act.

- Look, Burke, they had to.

Now, will you be reasonable?

We knew that this kidnapper was... was...

well, out after Maggie.

And we also knew he tried to k*ll her once.

He would try again if he realized that she was

anywhere where he might get to her.

Listen to me, Burke, when we found her,

there was a great deal more wrong with her

than just amnesia.

She'd-- she'd regressed.

She'd become a child again.

What you're seeing this evening represents

a tremendous step forward for Maggie.

- Well, I'm-- I'm glad of that, of course.

But what's to happen now?

By now, the whole town knows she's back.

And if they know, surely, the-- the kidnapper must know too.

- I'm aware of that, but what I'm hoping is this.

That she'll remember who the kidnapper is

before he has a chance to get to her.

- Why should I be so afraid?

- Anybody would be, Maggie, if they couldn't remember.

- But I'm starting to remember, I know I am.

There are all kinds of things in my mind.

Shapes and forms and...

it just seems so much more clear.

- Well, that's good, that's very good.

- You know, I'm starting to remember you.

I know you very well, don't I, Vicki?

- Yes, you do.

And-- and that's why you mustn't be afraid.

Because you're with people who love you

and who want to protect you.

- But why do I have to be protected?

What happened to me?

- We don't know that yet.

- But who are you protecting me from?

- That's something that only you can tell us.

- I'm trying to answer, I'm trying.

I seem to remember something about a-- a room.

A special room.

- A special room?

- Yes.

I can't see it very clearly, but...

there was a scent in that room.

- A scent? - Yes.

And... a special kind of music.

It was a special kind of music!

♪♪

[knocking]

- What are you doing here?

- I must speak to you right away.

Is anyone here? - Upstairs, I think.

- Come inside, then.

- What is it?

- You have betrayed me.

- I-- I don't know what you're talking about.

- Maggie Evans has appeared.

- Maggie Evans?

- Yes, she's here in Collinsport.

She's now with Dr. Woodard and all her friends.

Somehow, she's gotten out of that place,

that safe place that you'd hidden her in.

- Has her memory come back? - Not all of it, not yet.

But it seems to be coming back.

- Did she see you?

- Yes. - And what happened?

- There was a glimmer of recognition.

You told me that you represented security to me.

I can see now that you represent nothing but lies.

I cannot trust you.

- I haven't lied to you.

You can trust me to take care of Maggie Evans.

- It's probably too late for that now.

I may have to take care of Maggie Evans myself.

- Oh, don't you dare. You'll ruin everything

I've worked so hard for all these years.

Please, please, don't do anything.

- And you will go first.

[phone ringing]

- Hello?

Yes, speaking.

Yes, Dr. Woodard.

Oh, is that so?

Tell me, Doctor, has-- has the patient said anything?

I see.

That's all, just mumblings and fragments.

Nothing specific about what happened to her?

I see.

All right, I'll be down in a minute.

But here's what you must do.

No one must question her.

Not even you, I'm sorry to say.

And I want everyone cleared out of your office.

I don't want anyone to see me come in or go out.

Thank you. Goodbye.

[sighs] You have nothing to fear.

Everything is under control.

- How can you consider this under control?

- Because I'm going down there.

When I finish with Maggie Evans,

there won't be the slightest possibility of her

ever remembering anything.

- Why do I have to stay here?

- Because Dr. Hoffman is going to be here in a minute or two.

- Dr. Hoffman? - Yes.

- I know Dr. Hoffman. - Now, listen, Maggie.

She specifically said that she wants you to stay

as quiet as possible until she gets here.

- She wants me to stay quiet?

That's strange, because she's always trying to get me

to talk about everything.

- Oh, Maggie, all of that is changed now.

You see, you've reached a-- you've reached an advanced stage

in your recuperation, so the treatment is different.

- There's so much that I want to say.

- I'm sure of that.

But please, wait till Dr. Hoffman gets here.

- She's such a strange person. I don't understand her at all.

- Well, I'm not sure I understand her

completely myself, but let's just go on hoping

that-- that the end of the treatment justifies the means.

That's what really counts.

- You know, sometimes, I'm almost afraid of her.

There are so many things that I'm starting to remember.

My father, his name is Sam Evans.

Sam Evans! - That's right, Maggie.

- You know, I'm even starting to remember the house

that I live in.

It's near the water, and there's a big bay window.

My father paints by that window, the north light comes in.

- Maggie, please, just take it easy.

- But I'm starting to remember everything.

Everything's going to come back!

- Maggie, you've gotta relax now.

- There's more.

I'm starting to remember a-- another house.

An old house.

I can see myself in that house.

I'm being held there like a prisoner.

A very special room.

- Maggie, you've got to take this.

- People in there, people that hate me.

Someone who hates me. - Please, Maggie--

- Who doesn't want me to live. - Take this, please.

- Who wants me to die!

Wants me to die.

A man.

It's a man... he's coming closer.

I can't make out his face, but he's coming closer.

It's his eyes... burning eyes.

His face... I know that face now!

I know it! I know it!

- Maggie, don't say another word.

Do you understand? Not another word.

♪♪

- Dr. Hoffman, I'm remembering everything. Everything!

- That's wonderful. Wonderful news!

- She was just on the point of identifying the man

that held her prisoner, Julia.

- Oh, that's tremendous progress.

Excellent.

I thought I asked you not to question her.

- I didn't, it just seemed to come bursting out of her!

- Please, Dr. Hoffman, I've got to talk.

I want to say everything that comes to my mind,

just get it out in the open.

- Look, I tried to calm her down, tried to relax her,

but she wouldn't take the pill that I offered her.

- Dr. Hoffman, I want to say everything.

I'm just remembering everything! And then I'll be all right.

- Of course you will, Maggie.

You'll say everything and you will be all right.

I think this is the day we worked for and waited for.

We must be very careful and not ruin it.

What you must remember, you must remember

in proper order, or else you could go back

and be the way you were when you were found.

- Not that again. Not again!

- It could happen, Maggie. It could happen.

And that's why you must listen to me very carefully

and do exactly as I tell you.

- I will. I promise I will.

- Good, then we'll begin immediately.

Now, if you don't mind, Dr. Woodard?

- Well, why should I leave?

I mean, is there some reason I can't be here?

I'm certain that I can be of some help.

- Yes, there is a reason.

Maggie is my patient, and I think your presence here

would be inhibiting to her and to me.

Oh, Dave, we've come this far,

don't let-- let anything interfere now.

- All right, Julia, I understand.

She's your patient, and it's your privilege

to treat her as you desire. I'll be right outside.

- And I don't want to be interrupted

for any reason at all.

Now, Maggie...

I'd like to know what it is you really actually remember.

- I remember everything. Everything's come back.

Horrible-- I remember a cemetery,

I remember being put in a coffin,

and locked in a room.

- Now, who was it that held you prisoner?

- It was Barnabas Collins.

- Are you quiet sure? - I'm positive!

I remember everything he did!

It was horrible!

It was almost beyond belief.

He's some kind of a creature from the world of the dead.

He's not alive. Do you believe me?

- I believe everything you say.

Now, we must bring you back to normalcy

and to the good life you had before this happened.

- Yes.

- And the first thing we must do is stabilize your memory.

That's right, keep looking at it.

And listen to my voice, don't listen to anything else,

because in my voice you'll find everything you've been seeking.

Everything.

♪♪

- Well? - Come in.

See the change in her. - Yes, certainly.

Maggie. Maggie, how are you?

- Dr. Woodard, I'm fine!

Apparently, there was something wrong with my memory,

but everything's all right now.

I remember everything, everything about my whole life.

About my family, my job,

about the whole town, everyone in it.

- Oh, Maggie, that's wonderful, that's wonderful!

What was it that happened to you?

- Happened to me?

- Well, where were you during the time you were gone?

- What do you mean?

- Well, the... the time... you were gone?

- Well, I don't know how I got to your office,

but I remember that I went to bed in my room,

and I wasn't feeling very well, and--

and suddenly, I was here in your office with...

Dr. Hoffman.

So, if you can tell me everything that happened

in between, then I'm sure I'll be all right.
