narrator: It was
a beautiful winter's morning
on the Island of Sodor.
[whistle toots]
- Express coming through!
[whistle toots]
- Well, well, well,
if it isn't
my old friend, Gordon.
Still slowly chugging
along the mainline, are you?
- Oh, Spencer it's you.
What brings you back
to Sodor?
- I'm taking the Duke
and Dutchess
to their summer house,
of course.
- [laughs]
But it's winter.
- So it is.
See you later, slow coach.
- Oh.
[upbeat rock music]
♪ ♪
[laughs] I'm winning,
I'm winning!
- Why bother? You know you'll
have to stop soon, Gordon.
Unlike you regular engines,
I don't have to keep stopping
at stations.
- [gasps]
Ohh!
- Mind you, you probably need
a little rest!
[laughs]
- Ohh.
narrator: The next morning,
Spencer was at Knapford again.
- Still here, Spencer?
- The Duke speaking
to Sir Topham Hatt
about a very special
trip tomorrow.
- Oh, really?
What's that?
- Well, the Boxfords have
arranged for Sodor's
most important people
to celebrate the New Year
up at Callan Castle.
That's the sort of job only
a private engine gets to do.
- Uh! If you were that special,
you'd be leaving
from Platform .
I always leave from Platform
because I pull the express!
[whistle toots]
If numbers are so important,
then why is Thomas number one
and you are only number four?
- Uh, well, you don't even
have a number.
- Oh! I have a number.
[blows horn]
I'm number .
- [laughs]
- [groans]
narrator: The next day,
Spencer brought the Boxfords
back to Knapford
for their special trip
to Callen Castle.
They were having Spencer's
coaches cleaned
before they set off.
- Welcome, sir, ma'am.
Would you care for some tea
while you're waiting?
- Oh, thank you, Sir Topham.
- How lovely.
- Ahh! Ooh!
[laughter]
- Hmm.
Hmm. Ahh.
[laughs]
[whistle toots]
- Spencer, move!
That's my platform.
- But it was your idea, Gordon.
You said that if
I were that special,
I should be leaving
from Platform .
- Ah! But I--I didn't mean that.
- You can argue all you like.
But we'll both be delayed
unless you move to platform two.
- Ohh, the indignity.
[whistle toots]
narrator: The engines had
barely settled into their
their platforms,
when their coaches arrived.
♪ ♪
And suddenly, the station
was full of passengers.
- What larks.
- This is so exciting.
- It's Grandfather!
- Welcome, everyone.
We're almost ready to leave.
- [grunts]
[playful music]
- Oh, I can confidently promise
you a very smooth
and pleasant trip today,
Mr. Mayor.
Whoa!
Ohh.
[laughter]
- Thank you for teaching me
the better engine
should always be
on Platform , Gordon.
- You know that's not
what I was--ah!
[whistle toots]
- Ohh.
[gasping]
- Ohh.
[blows whistle]
- Do excuse me, madam.
narrator: Neither Spencer
nor Gordon realized
they had the wrong coaches.
- Spencer! Gordon! No!
[upbeat music]
♪ ♪
- I'll show you who's
the better engine, Spencer!
[laughs]
- We both know
who that is, don't we?
♪ ♪
- [laughs] I'm winning!
I'm winning!
- No!
- Ugh, I feel sick.
- Oh, my coaches have never
felt this heavy before.
narrator: Soon, Gordon was
approaching Wellsworth,
the express' first
scheduled stop.
[all exclaiming]
- Oh!
[brakes screeching]
- Who's fastest and best, now?
- Spencer! Those are my coaches!
- Ooh!
- Whoa!
- But how-- [gasps]
Uh-oh.
- Gordon? Where's Spencer?
- Uh, sir, there seems
to have been a mix-up.
- This is a disaster!
We shall all be late.
[blows whistle]
- Everybody back on board.
Quickly.
[whistle blowing]
- Oh, no.
- Gordon!
Follow that engine!
narrator:
The poor express passengers
were missing their stops.
♪ ♪
- Stop! Stop that express!
[whistle blows]
Silly Gordon.
Doesn't he ever give up?
narrator: Gordon chased Spencer
all the way to Callan Castle.
♪ ♪
- Now who's number one?
- Why have you stolen
the express?
- But--but I didn't.
[whistle blows]
- Spencer, explain
yourself at once.
- Ohh, Thomas and Philip
must have got
our coaches confused, sir.
- Is that what happened, Gordon?
- Yes, sir. But it wouldn't
have happened
if Spencer hadn't been
at my platform.
- Well, you told me
that special engines
always leave from Platform .
- [chuckles] I may have given
him that impression, sir,
but I didn't--
- Oh, enough excuses.
You are both to blame.
Your arguments and racing
have caused
confusion and delay.
And you've brought the express
passengers here,
where they didn't want to go.
- Sorry, sir.
- Yes. Sorry, sir.
narrator:
So Gordon and Spencer were set
to take the passengers back to
the stations they had missed.
When Gordon returned
to Knapford,
it was almost midnight.
He was exhausted and didn't care
which platform
he was on anymore.
Neither did Spencer,
who had just returned
with the Duke's guests.
- I hope you two know
how silly you've been.
Go on, apologize to each other.
It's a new year and a new start
for you both.
- Yes. You first, Spencer.
- I'm sorry I took your platform
and upset all
your passengers, Gordon.
- And I'm sorry I teased you
about which platform
was the best.
There's not that much
of a difference, really.
Whether it's the number --
[whistle toots]
- Or the number !
[chuckles]
- Or the number .
[fireworks booming]
[whimpering]
[fireworks whistling, crackling]
all: Happy New Year!
