21x01 - Springtime for Diesel

[bouncy music]

♪ ♪

children:

♪ They're two, they're four ♪

♪ They're six, they're eight ♪

♪ Shunting trucks

and hauling freight ♪

♪ Red and green

and brown and blue ♪

♪ They're the Really

Useful Crew ♪

♪ All with different roles

to play ♪

♪ Round Tidmouth Sheds

or far away ♪

♪ Down the hills

and round the bends ♪

♪ Thomas and his friends ♪

♪ ♪

[whistle toots]

[steam hisses]

[upbeat music]

male narrator:

"Springtime for Diesel."

[whistle blows]

♪ ♪

narrator:

Diesel the diesel shunter

isn't a very easy engine

to be friends with.

[loud bang]

- Ohh!

- [laughs]

- Was that you, Diesel?

narrator: It's just the way

he goes about things.

- Sidney!

[laughs]

- Diesel! Ugh.

- Have a good day, everyone.

♪ ♪

narrator: One day Diesel

was being his usual self.

- Ohh.

[laughs]

Daisy!

- Ohh!

- [laughs]

- Ohh!

What did you do that for?

- What?

I was just saying hello.

What do you want me to do,

say sorry?

- Well, I'm highly sprung.

A bump like that

could be bad for my swerves.

Not to mention my--

- Bye, Daisy!

- So rude.

♪ ♪

[whistle toots]

Ooh.

narrator: Daisy struggled on

after picking up

her passengers,

but she didn't feel right.

And then there was trouble.

[spring snapping]

- Ohhh!

[all groaning]

- My springs.

narrator: Daisy's springs

had finally sprung.

- This has never

happened before.

- Honestly...

- But for the sake

of my passengers,

I must carry on,

at least to the next station.

So this is what it's like

to be an unsprung engine.

Ghastly.

[springs creaking]

- Oh.

♪ ♪

- That's it,

everybody off.

This is my last stop.

It's the diesel works

for moi.

- Thomas!

- Oh, hey!

- [laughs]

- Oh, it's you, Diesel.

I might have known.

- Huh, I was just

saying hello.

- Now don't you worry, Daisy.

- You'll be well looked after

at diesel works.

- They'll fix you up

in no time.

- Oh, I'll never be

the same again.

- Oh, my.

Poor Daisy!

I wonder what happened

to her.

- How should I know?

[whistle blares]

- [coughing]

Diesel!

[whistle toots]

- Here we are, Daisy.

- Oh, look, Dart.

A diesel railcar.

- What he means is,

"Welcome to the diesel works."

- No, I meant,

"Look, Dart, a diesel railcar."

- My fitter always told me

I was one of a kind,

and he warned me

to be careful.

Not every railcar

is so highly sprung.

- Well, we'll

look after you, Daisy.

Don't you worry.

- I don't know.

This could be

the end of the line for moi.

- Uh...

What she means is--

- I know what she means.

- Oh.

narrator: Daisy's springs

had never sprung before,

and the diesel workers

didn't know how to fix them.

[somber music]

- Den and Dart say she may

have to be scrapped.

[both gasp]

Poor Daisy.

- Hey, Diesel,

have you heard about Daisy?

She may have swerved

her last.

- Why are you telling me?

[whistle blows]

narrator:

Everywhere Diesel went,

engines were talking

about Daisy.

- Have you heard the news,

Diesel?

- [grumbles]

- About Daisy.

- Oh, why when

something bad happens

does everyone always think

it's my fault?

[whistle blares]

Ohh.

Just because I gave Daisy

a little bump,

everyone blames me.

Typical!

- Well, I don't know

about you, Dart,

but I'm glad

I don't have springs.

- Oh, what you mean is,

once your springs have sprung,

that's it.

Poor Daisy.

- Daisy?

Are you asleep, Daisy?

- [mumbles]

- Uh, I--

I'm sorry for shunting

into you the way I did, Daisy.

I really didn't mean

to cause you any trouble.

But so what if I did

give you a little bump?

Other engines

aren't nice to me,

so why should I be nice

to other engines?

And they blame me

for everything.

But I hope you can be fixed.

I wish I could do something

to make everything

all right again.

I like you.

Although after this,

I don't suppose

you'll ever want

to be my friend.

[somber music]

♪ ♪

[upbeat music]

[whistle blares]

- Wake up, everyone!

Wake up!

[chuckles]

Special delivery

from the mainland.

[birds chirping]

- Ah.

- Look, Den.

Springs for Daisy.

- Oh, yeah.

[chuckles]

- Whoo!

I feel good as new.

Maybe even better than before.

Just the right amount

of spring.

Thank you, Den and Dart.

Merci beaucoup.

[both chuckle]

- Well--

- No problem.

- Merci big poo to you, Daisy.

[both chuckle]

I have no idea

what she means, Den.

- Neither do I.

[whistle blaring]

- Are you all

fixed up now, Daisy?

- Yes.

Thank you, Diesel.

- Uh, good.

Ha, well, uh--

I mean, uh--I, um--

I, uh--

- I know you feel bad

for what you did,

and I do want

to be friends with you,

but I don't like

being bumped.

No one does.

If you want

to make friends, Diesel,

you need to change

your ways.

[whistle toots]

narrator: The next morning,

Diesel was out and about

when he spotted Daisy

once again.

- Hmm.

[upbeat music]

[laughs]

♪ ♪

Daisy!

- Ohh!

- Good morning.

How are you today?

- Diesel, well, gosh.

I'm, um--I'm very well.

Thank you for asking.

- I didn't bump into you,

Daisy.

See?

I've changed my ways.

[whistle blows]

[whistle toots]

C'est fantastique!

♪ ♪

[horn blows]

- Morning, Diesel.

[whistle toots]

You look...happy.

- Daisy is my friend.

- [chuckles]

[whistles tooting]

narrator: Maybe Diesel

can make some more friends,

if he really can learn

to change his ways.

- Hmm.

[laughs]

[steam hisses]

[gentle woodwind music]

♪ ♪

Children singing:

[whistle blasts]

[whistle toots]

[upbeat music]
