I want to kind of get into it,
rewind a little bit.

Would you feel comfortable
with telling me a little bit

about, you know, where
your relationship with gambling

-kind of started?
-Mm-hmm.

Yeah, so my relationship
with gambling

probably started
around early '18.

Senior year.

Had a couple of buddies
that had already done it,

so I'm like, you know what,
why not?

I like sports.

There was a casino right
on the other side of the border,


you only had to be 18.

But I definitely, you know,
liked gambling.

Ended up, I couldn't watch
sporting activities

without wanting to have
something at stake,

without wanting
to have some skin on the game.

Gambled all throughout
my time at Indiana,

pretty much all throughout
my time at Cincinnati.

Made some mistakes though,
especially early on, you know,

betting on my own team,
which obviously everybody knows.

And, you know,
whenever I got into Tech,

same deal, making more money
than I ever made in my life.

No reason at all to gamble,
and yet I still did it.

You're just chasing
a dopamine hit,

and that's where
you lose yourself.

There's a reason gambling,
out of any other addiction,

is the highest suicide rate,

and that's because people
bury themselves in holes

that they feel like
they can't get out of.

You know, I'm walking
around the facility,

nobody knows that
I have a problem gambling.

You know, once I got found out
and got caught,

I went to rehab
to fix my problem.

And here we are.

I know how quickly
you can lose money.

I know how quickly
things can go wrong.

Everything
can get ripped from you.

then it's wrong ♪

It's been 48 hours

since Sorsby's
returned to the program,

and Coach McGuire
is trying his best

to get back to football.

You know, today's Wednesday.

I always text the leaders
in the morning.

I text 'em right before we left,

make sure their guys
are on time.

I am so glad Sorsby is back.

It was tough, man.

It's really, really tough.

Going through everything
with Brendan,

we're on a timetable
of how we're recovering.

He's still part of this
Red Raider Brotherhood,

and we're gonna support him.

We've got a really good
football team.

I'm excited
about this football team,

and this is only gonna
bring our team together.

Waking up at 5:30
is not as fun,

but beating the heat is better.

So I'll take what I can get.

It means a lot to get cleared

and be able to work out
with the guys

and compete a little bit.

Definitely missed that a lot,

just during the spring
when I had to rehab

and couldn't be with the guys.

So that competitive aspect

and just be ready
for the moment,

you know what I mean?

The team has two quarterbacks
making up for lost time.

Will has been working hard
to recover from his injury,

and Brendan Sorsby is just back

from five weeks
of gambling rehab.

Brendan: Just over a month sober
from gambling.

I'm very grateful for rehab
and what it taught me

and what I learned from that.

Just take it one day at a time.

You know, everything that I've
experienced and gone through

and, you know, kind of being
able to learn from those moments

and grow from 'em.

And then, you know,
coming to this experience,

you know, with a better head
on my shoulders.

I have a ton of remorse,
a ton of regret

for the things that I've done
in the past.

You know, just for my coaches

and teammates and those guys.

And then all the backlash
that we faced,

they're having to face all the
scrutiny and backlash as well.

You know,
I expected some pushback.

I never saw what was coming.

[thunder]

Reporter: The power fight
over Texas Tech football

has expanded
to the federal level.

The Big 12 Conference

is now suing
Attorney General Ken Paxton

and Texas Tech leaders
in federal court.

Well, we saw this morning

that the Big 12 had filed a suit
against the AG and Texas Tech.

Right now, we've got
quite a few requests from media

for comments in regards to that.

Reporter: The Big 12
is asking a federal judge

to confirm
that it can use its bylaws

to punish Texas Tech as a school

by holding back conference money

or even blocking the Red Raiders

from the Big 12
Championship game

if Sorsby plays this fall.

Once that finally came out,
you know,

I was on the phone
with my parents and agent,

and I'm sitting there
bawling my eyes out.

And in my head,
I'm thinking, you know,

I just threw everything
I've worked for my entire life,

like, out the window.

Like, it's over.

Coach McGuire and me
sat down in his office,

and there was a lot of tears
shed between the both of us.

It came down to,
you know, the team.

And I think that's one thing

that football players
really understand,

that you always
put the team first,

and he put the team first

whenever it came
to his decision.

It wasn't what
either of us wanted,

but, you know,
that was a tough conversation

that had to happen.

All right, perfect.

All right, guys.

So about an hour and a half ago,

I sat down with Brendan

and painted a picture
of what's going on right now.

So Brendan and I sat down

and we talked through
everything.

What he does not want to do

is to put this team
in a situation

that we play all year long

and the Big 12 sanction us

that we cannot go
to the Big 12 Championship.

And by doing that,

that we could not be in
the college football playoffs.

And Brendan Sorsby
does not want to do that.

And so he's gonna step away.

And it sucks.

Love you guys, man.
I do.

This, let me tell you,
I'll end it with this.

I've been doing this
for 32 years.

If we get to a point

to where I have to stand
in front of my team at any point

and say that
we cannot be in the playoffs,

I'm not gonna be able
to live with myself.

I might as well
just quit coaching.

I'm serious.

And there's nothing more
that I love.

I think I'll die
on the football field.

So now we got to pull together

and we got to be better for it.

Find a way, right?

It doesn't change anything.

Our goals do not change.

And we got to put the work in.

Okay? All right.

I love you guys, man.

There's no manual
as a head coach

to go through the things
that you went through

other than you got to trust
your culture,

you got to trust
what you believe in,

and then you got to understand

that you got some
great players around you

that are gonna have to step up
and take up the slack.

For him, obviously
this didn't play out

the way that he wanted to

or really that any of us
wanted to.

This whole thing is just
so hard on you as a coach,

you know, because
first and foremost,

we care about these guys,
you know.

You build a relationship

and, you know,
they become like family for you.

So to see him hurting
and, you know,

see him go through that
was tough.

I just told him
I was proud of him

for being strong and for
confronting this head-on.

And he has a home
and a place to come back to

here at Texas Tech.

You know, looking back on it,

I know that, you know,
Texas Tech and I

handled everything, you know,
with integrity

and we did things the right way.

I think this is something
that could have been handled,

you know, much more privately.

And, you know, we're not
gonna forget about that.

And I don't think
they'll forget about it either

when we're up by 40

and still throwing the ball
in the fourth quarter.

You know, that's where
the retribution will come.

Yeah, yesterday was one
of the tougher days I've had.

I love football.
I love this game.

But I also believe that,
you know, I was put on earth

to help young men
become better men, you know?

And that's why I wake up
every single day.

And so you got to be able to
turn the page.

The fall semester
is fast approaching,

has been through the fire.

about West Texas,

football is bigger than a game.

and daughters

behind-the-scenes look

at the Red Raider program

while raising money
for local charities.

The Women's Clinic
is not a new thing.

When we got here our first year,

I changed it
to Women Behind the Brand,

and it's just taken off
from 225 people to 1,400.

I think
it's really important for me

not to just be supportive
of Joey,

but to be supportive of Lubbock.

We are the toughest,
hardest working,

most competitive women
of West Texas.

You will see wives,
kids up here all the time.

We are truly a family.

And I think anybody
that comes tonight

is going to know that.

West Texas is just,
it's just different out here.

And the people are so great.

And everything is centered
around Texas Tech.

Joey: It's an opportunity
for women to come up here

that don't know a lot
about football,

but love the Red Raiders

and get a real experience
on what it's like.

because they've seen
a lot more of this facility

of your schedule,

it says that you need to be
in your apartment or house.

No drugs, no drinking,
no visitors after curfew

unless you are married.

has been a prelude to this.

But no amount of preparation

Camp is 12 hours a day,
seven days a week

of eating, sleeping,
and breathing football.

You got to be ready

You're gonna be in great shape.

We all eat together and stuff.

And then, you know,
it's just more meetings.

The O-line, they're just

and then you straight in bed,

ready to do it again
the next day.

It's a grind for sure,
but winning the playoffs

and going and taking
the national championship,

that's, at the end of the day,
where we want to be.

That's where
that lower back gets you.

Full camp is always
a shock to the system.

Its intensity
can be overwhelming.

One Red Raider
is especially feeling it.

Will Hammond
hasn't commanded a huddle

or lined up under center
for nine months.

And the fellas
across the line of scrimmage

welcoming him back
ain't gonna cut him any slack.

Will's very sure of himself.

But, you know, I think that
this is a pretty strong defense,

and I think some humbling
is coming.

we can always get better

with ball placement, you know,

as he really reintegrates
into the speed of the game.

And then just seeing
the different looks

I think that's where the reps
come into play, you know,

just making up for lost time.

because Will's still not, like,

super fluid
in his, like, movements.

So it'll be interesting
to see if he can, like...

if that is too hard, you know?

Injuries are injuries,
and there's like, inherent risk

when you come off of 'em.

So really just prepping the knee

to be able to take on
the demands of a game.

We're on a timetable
of how we're recovering,

and we don't need to force that

because we don't need
any setbacks.

Just coming back
from the injury,

I think a big focus for me

is being able
to still be mobile, you know?

Being able to throw on the run.

I think that'll be a big part
of the offense still.

And also being able to scramble
and throw on the run.

So that'll be
more important for me

than just designed
quarterback runs.

that there's pressure
and responsibility

that comes with you being
that starting quarterback.

And whenever you have things
set you back like this,

you can't change your goals.

to continue to get better,

There's no better tradition
in college football

as whenever
the Masked Rider runs.

It's iconic.

everybody knows it's Texas Tech.

The Masked Rider has led
the Red Raiders onto the field

for over 70 years.

The Masked Rider,
leading the team onto the field,

it's the greatest entry
in college football.

That started
at the Gator Bowl in the 1950s.

It's been a tradition
all of those years since.

You've got the smoke,

you've got the horse

racing down the field
with the team right behind them.

I think it's just
an outstanding look.

The first mounted horse mascot
in the nation,

the Masker Rider regularly
appears at school events.

And per tradition,

that person is a student
at the university.

It is now time

for one rider to transfer
the reins to the next.

I'm from Houston, Texas.

I'm currently a sophomore
here at Texas Tech.

This is Matador's second time

We're brand new.

So I'm actually
a third generation Red Raider.

It really is an honor
and so, so exciting

that I get to be in this role.

It's a lot more
than what people realize.

It's a lot more than just
running down the football field.

So this horse will probably make

about 200 to 300 appearances
this year.

There's some challenges
that come

with having a horse
that hasn't done this before.

He's handling everything
very, very well.

But this is a big, big ask
for any horse,

and so we're gonna
have to do some work.

I've only spent

about a week and a half,
two weeks with him,

and I already love him.

It's already gonna be terrible
at the end of the year

when I have to give him up.

There's a thing
that horse people say,

that horses have a lot of heart.

Like, they want to please

whoever is taking care of them
or riding them.

And I would say he
definitely has a lot of heart.

I think it's gonna be
a great year.

He's already showing out,
and I'm super excited for him.

roller coaster ride
