[Johnathan impersonating
Elmer Fudd]
[normally]
Everything's hunting everything.
Everything down there
eats everything.
Fish will eat a crab,
a crab will eat a fish.
And we're hunting them.
We're hunting the hunters.
[intense music playing]
[crew cheering]
[Jake on radio]
[Sig laughs]
[Johnathan] Some people believe
in the circle of life.
Whoa [bleep]
Watch out!
Yeah!
[laughs]
[blows raspberry]
[ominous chord strikes]
[water gurgling]
[waves crashing]
Harbor,
On the western
bairdi crab grounds...
All right, guys, one
Roger!
...aboard the Cornelia Marie.
Just offloaded 100,000 pounds
of king crab.
Now, we're out for bairdi.
Whoo-hoo!
Load up 100 percent.
It's not a bad way
to make $2 million.
[deckhand] Wow!
Whoo!
[exclaiming]
[Jake] There's the line,
right there.
Currents run so hard here.
The nutrients, they get
stirred up,
and then the crab eat it.
[dramatic music playing]
You can only fish
one side at a time.
If you set close enough,
you can pull crab from
the opposing district.
The bairdi fisheries are
comprised of eastern
and western territories.
Dividing them,
the 166 line.
Because boats can't cross
the border to fish,
and bairdi honor no such
rules, Captain Jake Anderson
launches his season looking to
lure crab from both sides.
-Yee-haw!
-Yeah!
All right, go ahead and dump
it, fellas.
-It's going over!
-Pot going over!
[splashing]
Go!
[deckhand shouting indistinctly]
Yeah, baby!
What the [bleep]
Sig's right over here,
right across the border.
I'm calling him right now.
Just two miles away,
in the eastern bairdi
crab fishery,
aboard the Northwestern.
Now that king crab season
is over,
we're moving into bairdi.
You know, just because we're
fishing the line
and I'm on one side,
the crab don't know that.
They mill back and forth.
And they're only going to go in
your pot
if you've got
a nice scent of bait,
and the only way to do
that is to add more.
Kicking off his $100,000
eastern bairdi crab season,
Captain Sig Hansen targets
his permitted side of
the nutrient-rich line.
[deckhand speaking on radio]
Yeah.
OK, Roger.
Triple baiting to peel off crab
from the west.
Whoa!
-Let her go!
Here we go, first pot, baby!
-Hammer down!
-Here we go, baby!
-Yeah, baby!
-Whoo!
[satellite phone ringing]
It's Jake.
I don't want to answer him.
[deckhand] Going over!
[Sig] I hate to be like that,
but I mean,
he just really doesn't need to
know what we're doing over here,
does he?
Sig's trying to take the crab
from my district
into his district.
He's doing the same
thing I'm doing.
That's bull[bleep]
We're about to do
something crazy.
Hey, what?
OK, Roger.
Come on, ladies,
let's go.
-Let's go.
-Got it?
Yep.
There we go.
Take two pots.
Good.
And about 500 to 600 pounds
of bait.
What this is going to do when
it lands is going to create
a cloud and start drawing
the crab away from Sig
through scent
and into my gear.
Sig thinks he's going to pull
a fast one over on us.
He's got another thing coming.
-Woo ha-ha!
-Whoo.
in the upper latitudes of
the Golden King Crab Grounds...
[deckhand] Okay, good!
[Johnathan on radio]
Right, roger!
Send our soldiers down with
double rations.
[chuckles]
...aboard the Time Bandit.
We're over 124 fathoms
right here.
It's always been good here
for us.
Knock on wood.
We can gross a couple
million bucks.
Just started the trip,
it's day one.
We want to do it as quick
as we can.
[deckhand]
Hey, the freezer's not working!
The bait is thawed out!
What's that?
We've got an issue with
the bait freezer.
All the bait is thawed out.
-You gotta be kidding me.
-What about our food?
Ugh!
Bleh!
[seagull crying]
[gagging]
That's our food, dang,
it's all rotten.
Not our ice cream,
no.
[deckhand vomiting]
-[vomiting continues]
-[Johnathan] Aye, aye, aye.
-God.
-[crew wretching]
Oh, my God.
You think there's enough bait
in there that not rotten?
We can get through this set?
With his icebox having
lost its cool...
Okay, guys, at least we'll get
these in the water, put some
bait in it, and we'll figure
out what we're gonna do next.
Roger!
...Captain Johnathan Hillstrand
is out 5,000 pounds of herring
and 500 pounds of
perishable food.
Let her go.
Come on, guys,
go, go, go!
Necessary to fuel all eight
stomachs aboard for
the three-week
Golden King Crab season.
We got freon on board?
-Nope.
Ah, [bleep]
[crew shouting indistinctly]
We don't have any
more bait than that,
and all our food's gone.
Phew, big mistake.
If I run to town, there's going
to be $20,000 in fuel.
I'm going to miss three days
of fishing.
I got to figure something out.
So St. George is right here.
Huh.
John looks to resupply at
the 35-square mile outpost of
St. George Island, one day
closer than Dutch.
You got me here, Grace?
Home to 28 residents...
[Grace on phone]
...and friend to
the fleet, Grace.
Is there anybody in town that
would have freon?
Also, we need like 5,000 pounds
of herring.
[Grace laughs hysterically]
[gags]
Okay, that's perfect.
Just wondering how well is
your food storage stock?
[Grace chuckles]
I mean, yeah, we would come
do that.
OK, thank you.
[waves crashing]
[Johnathan]
But to St. George we go.
[deckhand] Going over.
on the northern
red king crab grounds...
Coming up north, we did
find a nice
chunk of crab and a lot of
people moved in
and started hammering on it.
...aboard the Aleutian Lady.
I mean, these crab can move.
We're going down the border
of the blue king crab
savings ground
that nobody has fished
in decades.
I'm banking there is a huge
amount of crab in this area.
And us saying right on
the border is going to draw
some of those crab out.
Touting the fleet's largest
red king quota,
Captain Rick Shelford sets
using rudder and throttle input
to stay over legal territory
on the hunt for his remaining
$1.5 million of crab
in building 20-foot seas.
Turn, baby, turn!
Go, go, go!
[bleep] me.
[waves crashing]
Watch the back deck.
[deckhand] Ohh [bleep]
All part of the fun of
being a fisherman.
[suspenseful music playing]
[alarm beeping]
What the hell?
[bleep]
Hey, Noah.
Roger.
[intense music playing]
Can barely even keep
the boat straight.
I don't have control.
Come on, Noah.
I need power.
Oh [bleep]
Watch the rail.
Big wave.
[crew shouting indistinctly]
-Oh, my god.
-Watch out!
Whoa, whoa, whoa,
watch out!
-[waves slamming boat]
-[deckhand] Ah [bleep]
Oh!
On the Aleutian Lady.
-Oh [bleep]
Watch the rail.
[deckhand] Watch out!
Watch out!
[waves slamming boat]
Oh [bleep]
Are you guys OK?
Hopefully, Noah will get this
fixed real quick because I
can't just sit around here
without having power
in the storm.
[bleep]
[waves crashing]
I got to go check this out.
So...
How we looking?
Roger.
Hold steady.
[hydraulics hissing]
[engine powers up]
[dramatic music playing]
All right, we're back online.
[deckhand] Let's go, baby!
We must have sucked a bunch of
[bleep] in our fuel tank,
and it plugged up our Racor
filters, and it was starving
the main engine of fuel.
Noah pulled the dirty
s out,
put new ones in,
got it fired up, and we're good
to go.
Right now,
I need to get the pots
off the boat.
Going over.
And hopefully, find
a little something.
in the eastern
bairdi fishery.
[somber music playing]
-[Sig] Coming up.
-OK, Roger.
Let's get them on.
Aboard the Northwestern.
Yeah, buddy!
[suspenseful music playing]
Alright, first pot.
We'll see what's in
this thing.
If you can get a 50,
We're hoping for at least
That's our goal.
Uh-oh.
-Not much.
-[Sig] Ugh.
Handful of crab.
-We need more than that.
-18.
All right, second pot.
There's big fishing out here,
guaranteed.
-Guaran-[bleep]-teed.
-Oh, no!
It's not adding up.
Okay.
So.
Huh.
What the hell is that?
Just stand by for a second.
I'm gonna run over
a little bit.
Check something out.
I mean, I can't fish over
the line right there,
but you can certainly check
it out.
[console clicking]
That's just strange, you know?
That's definitely not a normal
bag setup.
Might as well take a peek,
don't you think?
-Yeah.
-Roger.
[intriguing music playing]
Oh, it's a CM bag.
That's Jake's gear.
Well, let's see what we got.
[deckhand] Oh, it's almost...
Looks like he's got two pots
welded together.
[Sig] What?
Hang on to it there.
I'm just going to pull it over
a little bit.
I'm just going to go
across the line.
Go ahead.
Stand by.
[hydraulics hissing]
[propellers whirring]
[engine rumbling]
Well, now his pot's working
for us.
-Let her go!
-Okay.
We'll see if we can chum some
more crab in here.
Two can play at that game.
On the western
bairdi grounds...
Aboard the Cornelia Marie.
[deckhand] Alright.
All right, guys.
This is where we
...blood in the water.
Whoo!
We're coming up on my line set
next to the bait pot.
I'm really excited to see
what's in it.
[gear whirring]
Phil was a line fisherman,
so maybe I'll have some of that
Cornelia Marie luck.
No good!
-What the [bleep]?
-Ah, [bleep]
-You're kidding me.
There any holes in that
pot, guys?
What the hell?
Where'd they go?
I mean, something's up, dude.
I'm gonna check the bait pot
here and see what's going on.
It's just up here
a little ways.
[propellers whirring]
[intense music playing]
Where the [bleep] is it?
It just vanished.
There's the Northwestern
right there.
Just three miles
across the line,
on the eastern
bairdi grounds...
[crew cheering]
-Bairdi!
-Bairdi!
Whoo!
I don't even have to look.
I don't even have to look.
[laughs]
Aboard the Northwestern.
[Sig] Now that we have Jake's
bait pot fishing next to us...
Oh, yeah!
There's a good chunk of crab
in them.
Who's this?
I thought I saw Mark
on the radar.
That's the Cornelia right there,
but we do got another
guy out that way.
Just don't come any closer.
-[deckhand] [laughing]
Hey, yeah.
[satellite phone ringing]
Let's see who it is.
[laughs]
Called again,
it's Anderson.
[Sig on phone]
Where's my pot?
[Sig laughing on radio]
...comes
around, kid.
I'm going to move
down the line.
...fishing was
pretty dang good around it.
[crew cheering]
Oh!
[exhales] [bleep]
[intense music playing]
[Sig] But, oh boy.
I'm looking at it right now.
There's some boats moving in,
that's for sure.
You know, they come in,
g*ns blazing, then it can do
a lot of damage.
[Jake] There goes
the neighborhood.
The big boats are coming in.
If we can work together,
we can protect that real estate.
What do you say we take two of
those bait pots, set them on
either side of the line,
and then
...above me, and then we'll see
what happens?
[intense music playing]
Sig and Jake's plan?
Combine forces and build
a second bait pot, placing one
on each side of the border,
betting they can harvest
the bairdi from
the nutrient-rich sea floor
before the competition
infiltrates
their chosen grounds.
That's a lot of bait.
Hopefully there's enough crab
for the both of us on either
side of the line.
-Okay, there we go.
We don't have much of
a choice, but we just got to
get these crab before I see
lights out the window.
They're like bees,
buzzards.
-There we go.
-The crab hotel's ready.
Let her go.
Bait pot, baby!
Bait pot,
let's go!
This is either the dumbest or
the smartest thing we ever done.
in St. George Harbor.
[Johnathan] The freezer broke,
we lost all our meat.
We need protein,
we need meat.
We burn a lot of calories
out here.
Hunting caribou,
this saves us three days plus
$20,000 in fuel,
if we can pull this off.
Aboard the Time Bandit.
[Johnathan] Hey, so, uh,
you guys have the most
experience hunting.
Teddy Bear, I need you to go
hunt for freon.
-You're doing supplies.
-Roger.
We better k*ll something
because Teddy's starting to
look like a ham sandwich.
-Yeah.
We got a contact
on the island.
You're all set.
They got r*fles.
They got four wheelers.
They're going to show up in
the dock any minute
and take you down the road.
Let's go get some
caribou, guys.
All right!
[crew cheering]
-[bleep]
-Come on, brother, let's do it!
[dramatic music playing]
St. George is a little island
in the middle of nowhere.
It'd be a godsend to
get a caribou.
-[waves crashing]
-[wind blowing]
[deckhand] It's gonna be
awesome.
[Johnathan] We're right here.
We're over here somewhere.
That's just the last known
location from the islanders.
Thank you so much.
We really appreciate this.
Thank you so much,
This is awesome!
[Johnathan] Guys are going to go
and get up here over in
this area.
It's sort of a mountain,
up and over the top,
and then they got to walk in.
It's treacherous.
God help these guys get some
caribou, please.
on the northern red king
crab grounds
aboard the Aleutian Lady.
I came to the blue king crab
savings ground
to be one step
ahead of everybody,
and we set right up
on the border,
and I just hugged that thing as
tight as I possibly can.
I'm really relying on this area
to produce for me.
I have to hit my offload,
and it's going to be pure hell.
Oh, oh, gotta watch the rail.
I can't just pick up the next
pot and run to the next one.
So right now, I got the wind
and the waves coming on my
starboard bow, and I do not
want to take anybody out.
So I got to turn on every pot.
[hydraulics hissing]
[foreboding music playing]
This is going to be a rolly
sum of a b*tch tonight.
[bleep]
All right, guys.
Here we go.
First pot.
[rope whirring]
[dramatic music playing]
First pot.
Let's hope that we have
something in it.
Oh, yeah!
Holy crap!
There's a lot of crab!
Damn!
That's some good sign.
Oh, wow,
whoa!
Watch out,
watch out, watch out!
Look out!
[waves crashing]
Oh wow, whoa!
Watch out, watch out,
watch out!
Look out!
[crew screaming]
Oh, [bleep]
Agh!
Argh!
[bleep]
-Everybody good?
-Yeah, everybody's good.
It's almost better to be naive
to how dangerous
the situation's in,
it is around
you.
Then you don't really know how
scared you're supposed to be.
I'm glad I saw it out of
the corner of my eye.
We're fishing,
we got to keep fishing,
so I got to try to plan out
every move I make.
It's about cutting through,
sliding through the waves,
so they're not spraying.
All right, here we go,
coming up on the second pot.
[deckhand] Come on, baby.
Now it's time to actually fish.
[triumphant music playing]
[deckhand] What do we got,
what do we got?
Give us some love, have
some crab.
-Woo-hoo!
-Oh, baby!
Oh.
[laughing]
-Yeah, baby!
-Woo!
Even more.
It's up the tunnel.
We're making money right now,
like money, money.
Jake, watch the rail.
We gotta open it a bit
in order to go to the next pot.
[Jake] Roger!
I got to try to time everything
perfectly, the waves.
The guys hauling,
where the pots are.
I mean, it is kind of an art.
[crew shouting indistinctly]
Come on, come on,
All right!
-Whoo!
-Oh, yeah.
[crew speaking indistinctly]
We're Looking pretty.
Crab count 6-7, 67.
We took a gamble, and we
set right up on the border of
the blue king crab
savings ground.
We found crab, and now I got
to stay on top of them
in order to make our offload.
In St. George Harbor...
-You got the freon?
-Yeah.
Good man.
Take that down, and we'll have
refrigeration back.
-Thank you.
-OK, roger.
...aboard the Time Bandit.
Well, there's six of us.
It should be at least two
pounds per person.
That's 16 pounds of meat per
day times 21 days.
So hopefully we can get one
big, fat caribou
so we can get
through the season.
On the northeast side
of the island.
So, we just crest the hill.
We're going down the back side.
Still trying to locate
this herd.
Haven't found them yet.
Hopefully, we'll get lucky
here soon.
[suspenseful music playing]
[whispering] Hey, you all.
They're up there
on the freaking hill.
See, right there.
Yes, several of them.
Oh [bleep]
there he is, dude.
See one?
-Yep.
-I see the bull caribou.
I'm good.
Hell, yeah.
Roger. [radio beeps]
[intense music playing]
[whispering indistinctly]
[g*nsh*t]
Dutch Harbor...
[whispering]
..on St. George Island.
[whispering indistinctly]
[g*nsh*t]
Ooh [bleep] got him.
Got him, dude, shot him.
Yup, that's it.
He's down.
He's down, dude.
Hell yeah!
Big bull down!
Big bull down!
Did you see that?
Let's go lay some hands on
some tines, boys!
He's done.
-Oh, damn.
-Oh, yeah.
-Look at this thing!
-It's freaking unreal.
That is the perfect caribou you
want to take out of the herd.
Yeah.
He's so old, his antlers are
starting to regress.
-Wow!
-Just an old bruiser, I mean.
-That's a lot of meat.
-This will feed the crew.
Hopefully, we can give some
meat to our families.
Good job, brother,
congratulations.
[Johnathan]
Welcome back, guys.
You guys did it.
-The great hunters.
-I'm worn out now, buddy.
That's the biggest caribou
I've ever seen in my life.
Let's get that freezer running
and start cutting up some
caribou, baby.
OK, guys, let's cut her loose.
Let's get out of here.
This island's been good to us.
God bless St. George.
Thank you, islanders.
We're ready to go fishing.
You ready to open some
presents under the bait tree?
All right, Santa, let's go.
On the bairdi grounds.
[Sig speaking]
All right, guys, we're coming
up on the bait pots.
I don't have a lot of time
right now.
I got boats coming in.
So I'd like to clean this area
up before somebody else comes
in and cleans it up for us.
All right, let's see what
happens here.
Pot's coming up.
Should be right on top of them.
We're gonna find out.
-Yeah!
-Aw, yeah!
[crew cheering]
That's what I wanna see.
That's what we wanna see
right there.
-Beautiful.
-Yeah, baby!
-Yeah!
-Oh, my God!
Oh, my God!
[Jake] That's gotta be 150-plus!
[deckhand] Let's go!
The other boats got close,
but they turned and bailed.
You know, I'd like to keep this
box that we have as long as
we can, because this is doing
really well.
In Norway, do they have a word
for thank you?
I just can't do it.
I can't give them that kind
of credit.
Oh yeah, baby!
"Jake, you're a genius."
-Yeah!
-[crew cheering]
Oh, my God.
We haven't had something that
tastes good in a while.
It's fresh.
-Let's eat some meat.
-Right.
-Finally.
-Cheers.
-Cheers.
-Cheers.
It was either that caribou
or we're going to eat
Teddy Bear.
