This is St. George Island,
part of the Pribilof Islands,
which is about 200 miles north
of the Aleutian Chain.
And in the '60s and '70s,
this was the northernmost
jumping-off point
for fishing
in the Bering Sea.
I mean, for years,
we hunted different types
of crab up north.
That included pureblood
northern king crab.
These crab were
genetic monsters.
You know, they had
a thicker shell.
They were bigger.
They were brighter in color.
They were beautiful.
But we haven't seen them
in 30 years.
And according to this survey...
[chuckles]
I think they're back.
When you're talking about
fishing in the north...
there is no forgiveness.

prepares for a fall season in
upper latitudes north
of St. George Island.
Feels good swinging some pots.

Every year they do a survey,
and, um, they found a trace
of crab up north,
twice as big as the crab we fish
in the middle of Bristol Bay.
Their own breed, big crab,
so, shh, that's where
I'm going fishing.
Spurred by the Alaska
Department of Fish and Game's
annual survey...

...captains bet on
the reemergence
of an ancient, larger crab,
descending from the Arctic
into fishable grounds --
the pureblood red king.
These crabs have been sitting
up here all alone because
they haven't been fished
in 20 years.
They're denser meat,
and they're big.
With the smallest legal red
king crab carapace spanning
six and a half inches,
northern red kings
can tout a 50% larger shell
and fetch a premium price
of $30 per meaty pound.
If we go up there and we hit
the mother lode, the price of
our crab is gonna go
from here to here.

But those seas
are treacherous.
To seize their share
of the fleet-wide,
$72 million fall season
payday, captains must scour
the 55,000-square-mile northern
territory, where the shallower
sea floor creates shredding
currents and towering waves.
