You better hope your kickball team
comes ready to play today.
Last I checked,
my team won the last three games.
We'll be ready.
Hey, Marcus. How's it going?
My mother says I'm coming home
after school with you today.
Yeah, it's gonna be fun.
School gets out at 3:35.
Don't worry. I'll come over too.
That might make it easier.
Hello, Michael.
Hello, Leo.
It's a lovely morning, isn't it?
-Hey, Stillwater.
-Hi.
It looks like you have something
on your mind.
Yeah. Marcus.
The kid we were just talking to.
He's new at school this year.
It's always nice to make a new friend.
-Well, Marcus is pretty weird.
-Oh?
He stands by himself a lot, and he
doesn't really talk to the other kids.
He has a special teacher
who helps him out too.
I feel bad, but usually
I don't really know what to say to him.
Anyway,
Marcus's parents think it would be good
for him to spend time
with other kids after school.
So he's coming over this afternoon.
How very special you were trusted
to help Marcus in this way.
Really?
Yes.
It shows the grown-ups around you are
acknowledging your kindness and patience.
I didn't think of it like that.
I'm gonna make sure Marcus
feels included when he comes over.
Me too.
Did you have fun
at the kickball tournament today, Marcus?
No.
All the cracks on this sidewalk
are diagonal.
We're gonna have a lot of fun
this afternoon, Marcus.
Just remember,
if you feel like you wanna go home,
your parents said
they can pick you up anytime.
You can drop your stuff off over here.
Don't you wanna take off your coat?
Okay. How about a snack?
I brought a snack from home.
Is something wrong?
I don't like how oranges smell.
Sorry. We can eat them outside.
It's okay. I'll just move over here.
What should we do first?
How about basketball?
Behind the back.
Through the legs.
Your turn, Marcus.
Marcus, are you gonna pass it back?
I guess not.
Maybe we should try
that card game instead.
I remember you saying
you like this game, Marcus.
Oh, I have an idea.
What if we start with ten cards
instead of five?
Those aren't the rules.
Yeah, but it could be fun to change it up.
One creature card, one hero card,
two spell cards and one action card.
Those are the rules.
It's okay. We can do it the normal way.
What about paper airplanes instead?
You can fold it on the lines
like the book says,
but it's also fun to try a new design.
What do you think, Marcus?
He's gone over to Stillwater's.
And did you know that dragonflies
are older than dinosaurs?
How very interesting.
This one is called a great diving beetle.
Scientific name, Dytiscus marginalis.
It can fly and dive under the water.
And this one is
an Australian tiger beetle.
See its long, spindly legs?
It's actually the fastest insect
in the entire world.
Does your compost bin have worms inside?
Indeed it does.
Can I go look at them?
Of course.
So you met Marcus.
He's a fascinating young man.
How has your afternoon been?
Until now,
Marcus didn't seem to be having any fun.
Did you hear how excited he was
when he was talking about bugs?
He wouldn't even look at us before.
How did you get him to open up like that,
Stillwater?
Perhaps a story might help explain.
I counted 47 worms in the compost bin.
That's good to know, Marcus.
You're just in time.
I have a story I think
you all might like to hear.
There once was a school
of fish that did everything together.
They lived together, ate together,
swam together.
All except Makoa.
He never swam with the group.
While the other fish swam together
in orderly fashion,
he zigged and zagged
and went off any way he pleased.
The other fish did not understand this.
Hey, Makoa, how come
you don't swim like the rest of us?
I don't know. It's just how my body
wants me to swim.
One day, the ocean current
swept the school of fish
into a giant, sunken ship.
The fish stuck together,
swimming as they always did, in a group.
But this only got them more lost
and more stuck.
-Oh, no.
-All except Makoa.
This way?
Makoa?
Well, hey. Are you stuck?
Yes! Makoa, how did you get out?
What's the secret?
I just started swimming.
The other fish suddenly realized
Makoa's special way of swimming
had gotten him out of the ship.
Come on, fish. Let's swim like Makoa.
They zigged and zagged in their own ways
until eventually each
and every one of them found their way out.
We did it!
There you are!
From then on,
they didn't question Makoa
when he swam differently.
Sometimes they even
joined him when he swam off by himself.
Come on.
I think differently, just like that fish
that swims differently.
Perhaps you can tell us more
about how you think, Marcus.
A lot of things that don't bother
other people feel really intense for me.
Like, sounds can be really loud,
and colors can be really bright,
and smells can be really smelly.
When I feel overloaded, it's like
a big firework going off in my brain.
And I want to get away.
But there are also a lot
of things I like about how my brain works.
Like, when I find something I really love,
like bugs,
I'll learn everything about them.
And I mean everything.
These are really good.
The detail is amazing.
Thanks. I spent a lot of time on them.
I'm sorry we expected you to do
everything the way we wanted to.
Now I understand why
you went off by yourself.
Is there anything you wanna do
before your parents get here, Marcus?
You pick this time.
I'd like to find more worms
for Stillwater's compost bin.
That sounds like a great idea.
A lot of people don't know
worms aren't actually insects.
But I still think they're cool.
I can't wait to tell my parents
I made my first real friends today.
Wow. It must be really hard
for Marcus to make friends.
I didn't realize how much
that might bother him.
Each of us is different in our own way,
but the one thing we have in common
is that we all need friends.
Hello, kids. Looks like it will be
a beautiful walk to school.
Hello, Michael. Hello, Leo.
Goodbye, Stillwater.
So, Marcus,
what's the bug fact of the day?
Did you know ants can lift
No way. That's strong.
And here's another one.
Fruit flies were the very first animals
to be launched into space.
I had no idea.
There. Now you have your
official Panda Scout Neckerchief.
Thank you, Karl.
I feel very official indeed.
Where should we go on our first adventure?
How about the woods?
There is a lot to do there.
Like a nature hike.
-An excellent idea, Koo.
-Hey, Stillwater.
Hi, Stillwater.
Hello, Michael. Hello, Addy.
Cool scarf.
It's not a scarf, Michael.
It's a Panda Scout neckerchief.
Me and Koo started our very own troop.
We like to explore
and have lots of adventures.
Will you join our club?
-Sounds fun. I'd love to.
-Me too.
Then first, you need to learn
the Panda Scout Pledge.
Panda Scouts are kind.
Panda Scouts explore outside.
Always there to help.
You say it now.
Panda Scouts are kind.
Panda Scouts explore outside.
Always there to help.
Okay. You're Panda Scouts just like us.
Now you get your uniforms.
Thanks, Koo.
These are great.
So, what kind of adventure
are we going to have?
We're gonna earn our hiking badge.
It's like a prize you wear
on your uniform.
Wow.
Being a Panda Scout is a pretty big deal.
It's a very big deal.
Listen.
All I hear is quiet.
It's peaceful. I like it.
So do I, Addy.
Come on, Koo. Let's scout ahead.
We'll catch up with you in a moment.
Look, Karl. Over here.
There are many things to see.
I've found a new path.
Stillwater, Michael, Addy, come quick!
We better go see what's up.
Is everything all right?
We have found something.
A little bird on the ground.
It isn't moving.
Koo! Maybe it's asleep.
We don't wanna wake it up.
I don't think that bird's asleep.
Well, maybe it's sick. Can we help it?
I'm really sorry, Karl,
but we can't help this bird.
Why not?
Panda Scouts are always there to help.
We can't help because it's dead.
That means it's not breathing or moving.
It's not alive anymore.
Forever?
Oh, not forever.
Uncle, is it really so? Can't we undo it?
No, Koo. We cannot undo this.
But I don't want it to be dead.
It's okay to have sad feelings right now.
I think we all do.
It's such a sweet bird.
It doesn't seem fair.
The other birds.
They have lost a friend, Uncle.
I feel sad for them.
You have a kind heart to feel this way,
Koo.
Come, everyone. Sit with me.
What's going to happen to the bird now?
This bird once gave us the gift of song,
it spread seeds so plants could travel
to faraway places,
and now it has one last gift to give.
Its body will help sustain these woods
and all that depend on it.
Bugs and flowers, and creatures
so small, you can't even see them.
It's sort of, like,
everything is connected.
Precisely, Michael.
You know,
all these questions
remind me of a story from a long time ago.
Like, a zillion years ago?
Perhaps not that long ago.
Shall I tell it to you?
There was once a young student
who loved nothing more
than learning from his wise teacher.
They spent many
pleasant afternoons on the riverbank,
discussing the mysteries of life.
On this day, the student was doing
one of his other favorite things,
making figurines from the freshly
dug clay the riverbank provided.
Look what I have made, Master.
He will join his friends
here at the river.
Very good, my student.
But there is something
I have been wondering.
Perhaps you can help me
by answering a question.
What is this?
A monkey, Master.
And this?
This is a fox.
And this?
Surely you know this one, teacher.
It is an elephant.
These are the names we have given them.
But what are they really?
Clay, Master?
Yes.
All of these seem to be different,
but all still clay.
Just at that moment,
the two heard a great rumble
from the hill above them.
Look out down there!
-Shall we move?
-Quickly, Master! I will help you.
The student saved his teacher that day,
but he could not save
his beloved clay figures.
Sorry.
My poor friends. They're gone.
I see your sadness, my young student.
Feelings are our guests,
and all are welcome.
But there is something I am wondering.
Perhaps you can help me
by answering another question.
What is this?
I-- I can't tell anymore.
It's all smashed up.
It is clay, Master.
Yes.
The same clay that made the monkey,
the fox, and the elephant.
The clay is still here.
I hold it in my hands.
That means my friends
are never truly gone.
I sense that you will be very wise
one day.
I know how the student felt sad
when his clay animals got smushed.
It's like we felt when we found the bird.
But then he realized if they were all
made from the same stuff,
none of them are ever really gone.
Blossoms fade, leaves fall,
but in the spring,
nature will bloom again.
The end of something may be difficult,
even sad,
but it also brings something beautiful
and new.
It's been a hard day,
but these lessons are good ones.
I feel less sad now.
I remember when Michael's fish died.
We had a funeral for it.
How did that funeral make you feel, Karl?
We were sad, but then we got to say
nice things about Goldie.
And that made me feel better.
In many cultures,
having a ceremony is an important way
to pay respects to someone,
or something, that has died.
Can we have one for the birdie?
A ceremony?
That's a great idea, Karl.
I like this display.
I think a birdie would too.
Goodbye, little friend.
Thank you for your beautiful song.
Thank you for your colorful feathers.
Thank you flying through the sky and
spreading seeds for our gardens to grow.
Moments like these are never easy,
but I'm glad we were able to share it
together.
Well done, Panda Scouts.
You've all earned
your hiking badges today.
Thanks, Stillwater.
One more thing.
For all your thoughtful questions
and caring actions,
a heart badge.
That's the most important badge of all.
I want to go show all our friends.
Could I go with you?
If that is okay, Uncle?
I feel proud of this.
Of course, Koo.
I'm proud of all of you.
I'll take you.
Okay. Let's go!
There's something I've been wondering.
The young student in your story,
was that you?
Well, I did say it took place
a long time ago.
But not that long.
Farewell, Panda Scouts.
-Thanks, Stillwater.
-Bye, Stillwater.
With our spirits
We were floating through the trees
Like creatures, we were soaring high
Blowing off some steam
Or a mountain
And its effervescent green
A never-ending dream
I found a little bit of honey
And now I'm a little sweeter inside
It's just a little bit funny
But now I have the world on my side
