[reverential music playing]

[narrator] For Fernanda del Carpio,

it was the date
she took as her true birth.

For Aureliano Segundo,

it was both the beginning
and the end of happiness.

ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF SOLITUDE

[indistinct chattering]

The queen has arrived!

The Queen of Madagascar
is in Macondo! She's here!

- [woman 1] Bravo!
- [Aureliano II] We're married!

Long live the queen!

- Buendías!
- [excited cheering]

- Let Macondo celebrate!
- [bell rings]

The queen has returned,
and she is now a Buendía!

[man 1] Cheers to the newlyweds!

[Aureliano II] Today, we celebrate!

- [crowd cheers]
- [fireworks explode]

[woman 2] Come on, come on.
Let's go. I wanna see.

[man 2] Who got married?

- [woman 3] One of the Buendías.
- [firework explodes]

Looks like your Aureliano
married his queen, didn't he?

Don't be so sure.

I blow that queen out of the water.

[crowd chanting] Aureliano! Aureliano!
Aureliano! Aureliano! Aureliano!

[lively music playing]

[crowd cheering]

Oh, they're here!

[indistinct shouts of joy]

- [man 3] Congratulations!
- [man 4] Long live the newlyweds!

[crowd cheers]

[fireworks exploding]

[man 5] Long live the newlyweds!

[crowd cheers]

Welcome to the family, my dear.
Welcome to your new home.

- You're glowing, son. Look at you.
- It's all 'cause of my wife.

[lively music continues]

I thought they were lying
when they said you got married.

Congratulations.

My brother, my wife.

José Arcadio.

Fernanda.

Let's go. Why don't we have a drink?

Come on.

[Aureliano] Hmm.

[firecracker explodes]

[crowd cheering]

To the bride and to the groom.

[all] ¡Salud!

To the future children
they'll raise together.

[man 6] Bravo!

Hey, don't be shy. Enjoy yourself.

[lively dance music playing]

[people cheering]

[man 1] Cheers to love!

They say it's bad luck
not to toast to the newlyweds,

so let's get our drink on!

[all] To love!

- [woman 1] To the bride and groom!
- And for the beautiful bride!

[Fernanda gasps, coughs]

Hey, hey!

And one for my friend!

[somber music playing]

[bells ringing]

[muffled music continues in distance]

- Are you the queen of Madagascar?
- [Fernanda gasps]

He likes to party, that's true.

But he's a good man too.

You are
Aureliano Segundo's legitimate wife,

and you will give birth

And you will inherit this house
which is full of old people now.

Fernanda, you will be
the queen of this house.

And you will raise this child
by your own rules and standards.

It's a little boy.

[Fernanda laughs]

- [Aureliano II] My goodness, look at that.
- [man] Good for milking.

- Great for pork rinds.
- [cow mooing]

[animals bellow]

What happened to the horses?

They need a bath.
Let's go, boys. It's getting late.

- [man 1] Come on, boys. To the stable.
- [man 2] Yes, sir.

I accept your offer. All right?

Under certain conditions.

- Mm-hmm?
- Right.

First of all, from now on,

I will be in charge
of making all household decisions.

Mm-hmm.

I will no longer tolerate any more mockery
or blasphemy from the Colonel or Amaranta.

You will have to be by my side,
supporting me.

- I'm done with you playing dumb.
- Whatever you say.

And secondly,

you are not to be surprised by death
in the bed of your concubine.

You will die under our roof,
with your family, as God intended.

I will die at your feet, my love.

There's one more thing.

From now on, we sleep in separate rooms.

I have to take care of myself because…

I'm pregnant.

[mysterious music playing]

You are?

You mean it?

[kisses]

Everyone!

I'm gonna be a father!

- [man 1] Yeah!
- [man 2] That's great news, boss!

- Brother.
- [man 3] Yeah?

Slaughter a heifer.

Bring drinks and musicians
because we're celebrating big tonight.

[man 3] Right away.

[mysterious music continues]

[Fernanda] Up the stairs, please.

[reverential music playing]

[Sofía] Son, come quick!

Hurry up!

Hurry!

- [Úrsula humming]
- [Sofía] He's beautiful.

Look, son. It's a boy!

- [Úrsula shushing]
- [Sofía] Go on. Go ahead.

- Take him, son.
- [baby cries]

Hold him.

[Úrsula shushing]

Don't be afraid.

He has your grandfather's eyes.

We will call him José Arcadio.

Dear father.

José Arcadio grows healthy
under the care of grandmother Úrsula,

in hopes that someday he'll become pope.

Who's the most handsome boy?

[Fernanda] My second pregnancy
progresses without issue.

Aureliano is always looking out for me,
just like the rest of the family.

I am as happy today as the day I arrived,

and you are always in my prayers.

Fernanda del Carpio.

[dramatic string music playing]

[narrator] The circle of rigidity
initiated by Fernanda

from the moment she arrived
ended up closing completely.

She was the only one
in the Buendía household

who would determine the fate
of the family.

[dramatic string music continues]

[narrator] Meanwhile, in Macondo,

railroad crews
began laying ties and tracks,

but no one paid them any attention,

thinking it was just another trick
of the gypsies,

who returned with stories
of the genius inventions in Jerusalem.

[man 1] Okay, let's go, boys!

Dig, boys, dig!

Faster, faster, faster, come on!

[man 2] Pull the rope!

[man 1] Don't stop for anything!
Keep digging! Keep digging!

Don't stop!

Good, good, keep going.

[men shouting indistinctly]

[music fades]

[mysterious jazz music playing]

[dark percussive music playing]

[dark ethereal music playing]

[music fades]
