To be honest,

I don't think

any grandma's gonna want

something hanging

So, designers,
if you can't guess,

your next challenge
is all about swimwear!

- I've made swimwear before.

I'm from the Caribbean,

so swimwear is very much
a part of our daily life.

- I'm all about
the bikini,

the straight bikini,
all that good stuff

on a woman's body.
I'm game.

[dramatic music]

- I don't know about this one.

- Have you not designed
a swimsuit before?

- Never in my life.

- I do believe that
the perfect swimsuit

has the power to transform
a woman's confidence.

- It's true.
- And for this challenge,

you are to create
a swimsuit and a cover-up

inspired by my new line,
Heidi Klum Swim.

- Designers,
to help take your looks

to the next level,
you will each create

your own custom-printed
textile.

You will be working
with technical experts

from Kornit Digital
and Papilio Prints

who will assist you with
the design and print process.

And once your prints
are designed,

we will go to Mood, where you
will each have a budget of $100

and you will have
one day for this challenge.

but we have to design
a cover-up

and a print in one day.

The inspiration
for this textile

is the mandala,
and I'm really feeling

the color purple.
I want it to look hot.

She's gonna look smoking.

- This is 8 inches. Yeah.

So I'm just trying to figure out

the space I want in between.

- I want to do
some type of ethnic print.

I'm inspired by the Rasta colors
first, and then I would

use a different shape
to make it all come together.

- All right,
so just brush it in.

- I knew I wanted to do
a black-and-white check,

something abstract
and Escher-inspired.

I'm loving it.

- For my textile, I want to
make a retro-inspired stripe

out of this girl
lying on a beach towel.

Yeah, kind of, like,
offset it like that.

I don't go to the beach
too often,

and when I do
I'm not usually in the water.

So when I think about where

my girl is gonna be
wearing my bikini to,

I think that she might just
be going to a pool party

and hanging out by
the smoked meat.

The print that I created
was this.

- This is denim.

swimming with denim.

and Rihanna is the queen
of trying new things.

- What about your cover-up?
- I have denim.

- Very heavy. No girl would want
to pack, like, a jacket to take

as a cover-up to the beach.

I'm from Philly.

I don't see a woman

diving headfirst
into the water.

My girl would rock
a denim dress and zip it down

a little bit and show a
little bit of her bathing suit.

At least, so I thought.

- I got inspired by macaws.
Birds.

I used this shape because
it kind of remind me

of the shape
of the wings of the bird.

- Mm-hmm. I like the print.
- At least it's high-end.

-The print is
very sophisticated.

- I wanted to keep it
kind of simple.

the bull's-eye?

- The side,
so it makes the waist

look a little more slimmer.

- So I was gonna
basically do like this to it.

These would attach here, 'cause
I want it to be able to be,

like, adjustable.
- Having the black on the side,

that's kind of slimming.
So you get those lines,

which is nice.

The print that I designed,
I did a little sketch

of a girl
just kind of sunbathing.

It had a bit
of a retro feel to it.

And then I wanted to pull
the colors out of the bikini

and use them
sort of as detailing.

It's obviously not finished.

I think you need to be

a little bit cleaner
in your work.

You see how this is all, like...
- Yeah, it's puckered.

- It looks a bit
thrown together right now.

- And then for my cover-up,
I was going to

do just a simple color-blocked

wrap dress
that you can easily remove

that would snap up
at the side.

I wouldn't wear that.

textile or the fabric choice,

the overall construction

and the shape of
the whole thing is really cool.

and I am lowering
the back, as well,

everything else the same.

I think it's a really
beautiful look,

but I know she absolutely
hated those bottoms,

so I would be an idiot

on his model,

The overpiece is a piece
made with silk crepe

to complement the color
of the swimsuit.

I also felt that the shape
of your cover-up

was really beautiful.

Simple but effective.

Looked expensive.

Looked very well made.

I think this is excellent work
from you.

of my favorite motifs,

and I love the shape

- Um, so I created a print
that was Rasta colors.

I ended up doing a bikini top.

So my girl is just having fun
on a Caribbean cruise.

- The print reminds me of a menu
in a Japanese restaurant.

- And the cover-up,
this is not helping your print.

It just looks like
the tablecloth underneath

the menu
of the Japanese restaurant.

- I think it would have worked
that print better

if it actually had been
on a fabric

in a vintage-type-style dress.

It wasn't a must-have
bathing suit for me.

It kind of feels like it's
already out there in the world.

- I think you should have
owned your print

and done the cover-up
in the print.

To me, it just looks
like a robe.

- So I knew I wanted

to do something very organic

but geometric
in a checkered shape.

Really classic, and I wanted
to just give it a full look,

be very versatile with the pants
and the cover-up and the top,

and just accentuate,
you know, the bikini

and, um, keep it very Heidi.

- Rik, you nailed
this challenge.

with hand-stretched

harlequin theme very well.

It's graphic, which means
it will pop online.

This is the best work

something with a silhouette

that can be approachable
by many body shapes.

And I chose this print,

and then I did some shopping
at Mood

and chose this lavender
to go with it,

and I created this
wrap pant/train sort of skirt.

- First, I want to hear
from the other judges.

with the print, Jenni.

The print reminds me
of a yoga mat,

so already, I'm like, "Mm."

And then you have
this very sporty,

crisscross bathing suit

coupled with the sweetness
of the color.

- Right.
- It just doesn't work.

So, this was not
one of my favorites.

- I was not a fan of this.

But at the same time,
you have to make it now,

and here, I feel like,
to be honest,

I don't know who I'm looking at.

- I really went
through the dossier

and took a look
at what your line was,

and I saw the subtlety
of the prints.

And the bathing suit,
I wanted to do something

that was a little bit
more covered.

Also, I loved the cover-ups,

and I loved all of the bodies

that were multi-versatile
to every woman.

And, um, I'm really happy
with the outcome.

- This is probably my most
favorite cover-up today

on the runway.
- Thank you.

- I like the bathing suit,
but here, for me,

the cover-up just sings

and sells the look.

I love your print.
I like the idea behind--

it's actually one of the flowers
he has tattooed onto his arm.

- I was gonna ask.

- So I think that is very nice.

It gives it a personal touch.

But you also
decided on not doing

the entire print head to toe.

It looks great with the white.

It's feminine.
It's beautiful.

It flows.
Boom, it's an easy snap.

You open it,
and off it goes.

- It reminded me of, like,
Sardinia or Greece

with the blue and white.
- Very Greece.

- And I thought it was
really sweet and easy

but felt very effective
on the runway.

You know, this feels special.

It's one of the things
that I know that if I had it,

I would always wear it.

- Yeah, it's an all-summer
piece.

your print and your look.

- Okay, so I thought I would
do a fashion illustration,

and turn that into
almost a stripe.

I thought I would throw it
into a bikini

and bring some youthful color.

- Sarah.
Should we start with the print?

- Okay.
[giggles]

- This is a beautiful
illustration.

It's just,
it doesn't work as a print.

- Okay.

- This really looks like

a child's bathing suit.

This is something
a six-year-old would buy.

The only thing that was missing

for this to be
a child's bathing suit

was a rainbow cover-up,

and you almost did that.

I have a hard time
imagining this

in Heidi's collection.

- Okay.

- I do agree with Nina.

It does not look like

a swimsuit made for a woman.

The idea, the concept of it,
is not bad,

but then what you
made out of it

is also not that interesting.

- It's okay, but it's not great.
- Okay.

- Yes, the top fits her okay.

The bottom, to me, are too big,

because I don't know what it is.
It's a high waist?

- They're a little bit
like boy's underwear.

- Oh, jeez!
- Yeah, I mean...

to me, they're kind of
like briefs, in a way.

And then the cover-up, to me,

is nonexistent.

like there's too much going on.

And the black makes that pop.

- I mean, the print
is one thing,

and then what she's done with it

is not all that great, either.

- I just think
it's very peculiar

to have a cover-up in black.

And a black cover-up
is very heavy

for a day at the beach.

There's not much fashion
happening here.

This just threw me off.

I don't understand even
how she can present

today's look with that cover-up.

It's hard to see past that.

I like these kind of
colors together.

It's just the combination.

I feel like most designs
that we've seen from Roberi

are very elegant
and sophisticated.

- I liked Roberi's print,

and I liked his bathing suit.

I just didn't like them
together.

- I have to say, I love Rik.

I love his total look.

She looks sophisticated.

It's fashionable.

- That's a clever
cover-up pant.

- Where Rik's is polished

Alex's is bohemian
and effortless, right?

It's a completely
different girl.

today was beautiful.

- Very lackluster.

is just not working here.
