to the judges
in both the daytime
runway lighting,
and also the nighttime
black light lighting.

Also, an ultraviolet flashlight,
a black light,
and you will bring this
to Mood with you,
because you're going to be
testing fabrics.
And we've outfitted
a special room in the back
with black lights
for you to test your look.
And please take advantage
of the Brother sewing room.

- I started sketching.
The first thing that I thought
about was that change
from daylight to black light,
and I'm kind of thinking, like,
daytime, like sweet, like...
[clicks tongue]
And then at nighttime,
it's like, sex b*mb.
Yes,
let's have fun with this.
- The inspiration behind
my look is my fiancée.
Sometimes I call my fiancée,
Stacy, my wife,
because we've been together
for an eight-year relationship,
but we're really just engaged,
and she's technically
my fiancée.
She would wear something
really funky.
So I start to draw things
that are good on her body.
Creating texture as I sketch.
Playing with style lines
to allow the eye to jump.
Breaking up the pieces
so that when the black light
hits it,
it jumps out even more.

- All right, designers,
you know the challenge.
Daylight to black light.
Head off.

- With the black light
challenge,
the things that will go wrong
is if you pick
the wrong fabric.
Hmm. Still confused.
♪ ♪
'Cause it's tricky.
I like that.
Finally, I see
these fabrics that have,
like, all a multitude
of colors.
A red and a really
dark, dark pink.
But when I put the light on it,
it gives me hot pink.
I'm like, "Oh,
this is most definitely it."
- I'm not a big fan
of neon colors.
Neon can be so tacky.
This might be a game-changer.
I'm already thinking sheer,
'cause I kind of love
that element of
non-reactive,
so when it goes to black light,
you wouldn't be able to see it.
You would just see
the bra underneath.

but then it has to really pop
at night in the black light.
-The biggest trick is to not
make it look tacky A.F.

- I'm originally
from Provo, Utah.
I was a senior
in high school,
my dad came into my life,
and was like,
"Come to Boston."
So, he kind of rescued me from
the land of the Mormons.
So, I moved out there,
and I was a dental assistant
at Harvard for five years.
And then,
I applied to MassArt.
It was, like, the only school
I applied to
'cause it was, like, affordable.
[chuckles]
So, I was just like,
actually, you can make money
from being an artist-designer.
-Hi, everyone.

Well, I'm here
to check in with you.

-Hello, Tim.
-What are you up to?
-So, I was kind of thinking of,
like, first she looks
like a lady,
and she comes down,
and she's like this, like,
in, like,
a little baby doll dress,
just kind of like...and then
as soon as the black light
goes on, it's this, like,
bra top, and I want to make,
like, nipple pasties.
-Oh, my God.
-So, this is the top part.
And so, as soon as
the black light goes on,
the top disappears,
and it's just, like,
a skirt and a bra.
-So, it's like a--
a complete personality reveal.
-Yeah, 'cause it's
kind of like, you know,
sometimes you
want to be slutty,
sometimes you
want to be sweet.
So...
-I'm intrigued.
-That's what I'm going for.
-Okay.
Kimber,
what are you up to?
-I'm gonna go
and paint all of this side.
And then I'm gonna
use these paints
to, like,
blend in the white.
-This print and this white...
What do you think?
-My honest opinion?
-Your honest opinion.
-I hate it.
-I do, too.
The difference
in the scale here,
this larger print
with this more intricate print,
it's very thoughtful.
But these expanses
of white are awful.
-Right.
-This is ugly.
-So,
where the red pieces are
are where I'm going to,
like, spray-paint.
So, it's gonna...
ultimately, when it's walking
down the runway,
it's gonna look white.
But then, when the black light
comes on,
it's gonna be different colors.
-How are you making decisions
about how
you're using the colors?
-I have no clue.
[both laugh]
-Well, that's
confidence-building.
-Mm-hmm.
-I think you need to build
more shapes with lines.
Figure it out.
-I will.
-Really?

-So you look at this,
and you're like,
"I don't know that anything
is gonna be
hit with the black light."
And then,
the light comes on it.
And same with this.
-The collar, to me,
says ready to wear.
-Yeah.
-And you want it to say runway.
-Okay.
-Under the black light,
it's exquisite because
this turns immediately
into bright orange.
-Ah.
-I'm doing the white denim,
but then I did this white piping
on the side that'll kind of
go blue instead of white.
And then I'm doing full fringe.
-I just don't think
you're taking it far enough,
especially knowing
how talented you are.
-Okay.
- I'm a little nervous
with Dexter's look.
I asked if he was gonna
spray-paint the fringe,
and he said he was just
gonna leave it white.
We'll see how that goes.
-I want you to go for it
a little more with the garment.

-So, this is the kind
I wanted to use, you know,
all the neon colors
as you would see
in a normal black light setting.
I knew immediately
I wanted to kind of lace her in.

You have this incredibly strong,
almost warrior-like top.
-Yes.
-You need a skirt
that goes with this.

- I like Rik's style a lot.
That T-shirt dress
that he created
has me thinking he has
a lot more up his sleeve.
-This is a fabulous look.

-I'm doing another jacket.
And it's actually
really, really scary bright.
-So, what's going
under the coatdress?
-Okay, so, I'm creating
a legging out of...this.

opening up my eyes to this
whole brand-new world
of sophistication.

to play with texture.

on your fiancée
and this whole wedding idea.
It's not working.
It's a construction mess.
Get rid of it.

The pink is vibrant

What really transforms

and I bring a modern twist
in it by bringing, like,
the classic rib knit cuff,
and I bring a rib knit neckline.

Gonna get some volume.
- One hour left,
and I had just finished
creating that textile
on the skirt.
I keep looking at the clock
every five minutes, being like,
"Please tell me
that this isn't the real time,"
'cause I definitely want

like I got a coloring book.
I'm puff-painting
all of the flowers,
but the thing about the
puff paint is
it's not puffing
and sitting out,
it's puffing
and sinking in the fabric.

- Under the light,
the print is not shining,
so I'm in trouble.

-My look
is a little bit more
fun and casual
for the summer.
Um, and I hand-painted
intricate flowers.
-I have to say,
I love this look.
I love that it is
hand-painted on the coat.
To me, the whole look
just worked head-to-toe.
-Thank you.
-The way that you
so delicately
created the flowers,
and how you built them up
and then let them drop away,
that's a really challenging
thing to do,
and you just
hit the nail on the head.
-The fact that you did it
on this transparent material,
and the highlight
of the edging...
-Mm-hmm.
-When the black light hit it,
gave it
a very interesting look.
And then you did
the painting on the hem,
which looked like it was
paint splattered on space.
-Right. Sweet.

-This felt fresh
by adding that kind of
"Blade Runner" plastic trench
with very beautiful handwork.
I mean, you should
go into embroidery.
-Thank you. For sure.

Well, I actually
picked it up from henna.
-Spectacular.
-Oh, so you do henna paintings?
-Right.
-Well, I mean,
it's inc--professional.
-This is my fourth design.
Three hours left to work,
and I came up with this idea,
and I just immediately
started working.
And so I painted everything,
and in the morning,
I came to it a little bit peely,
but I kind of liked
that lace look.
-Gives it dimension.
-Right.
-Yeah.
-Subtle.
-So I worked with it.

Kimber,
tell us about your look.
-I just started creating
more of a A-line
and, like, off-fraying and...
hand-painting, like,
the flowers I saw.
-So when this dress came out,
you know, I got very excited.
'Cause it's a very wearable,
cute dress.
And I saw this print
and I was expecting it,
you know, to sing, like,
"Let it glow," and it did not.
Not only did the part,
it was very, very, subtle.
Once the lights went all down,
it didn't have the bang
that a great floral can.

tell us about your look.
-So, it was inspired
by either a doctor
and a party girl at night.
So, this is the doctor.
And then, at night,
she becomes, like,
this wild, Japanese,
emojis kind of girl.
-I loved it in the black light
because I do think
that it's so very now.
It was magical.
-You know what I loved
about this dress?
I loved the element of surprise.
The transition was like,
"Wow."
When the black lights came on,
this dress came alive.
It was a phenomenal
transformation.

-Rik,
tell us about your look.
-I was, uh,
really inspired and taken back
to my actual raver days
and I did want to use
fabrics that I've seen
within that,
which was denim
and a kind of, like,
cording and neons,
but also kind of elevate it.
You know,
to a new, modern take.
-This is so spot-on,
but, for me,
totally not modern spot-on.
-Yeah.
-The problem is, is that
she looks like a stripper.
-Yeah.
-Because of the--
-Slits and stuff.
-The bows are, like,
you can't do that.
-I think the top
looks very well-made.
-Thank you.
-I think the bottom
with the wrinkles is scary.
It's a heavyweight fabric.
You have spacing,
you have lacing.
It's pulling it up
like curtains.
-And then
when you turn the light off,
it's kind of
like a Christmas tree.
Because you bedazzled her
from head-to-toe.
Wherever you could,
you bedazzled her.
-It is a little overdesigned.
I agree.
-Erin, tell us about your look.
-I was kind of thinking
of this idea of, like,
the sweet little angel,
and then when it would go
to black light,
it would have this outline
of just, like,
the bra and the skirt.
I was trying to have that
kind of naughty girl
when it went to black light.
-I love this look.
It's fashion-forward,
it's something that
I haven't seen before,
and this is a wow piece.
-The first thing that struck me
was that it was
this combination
of demure and sexy,
but still with
this ethereal feeling.
And when it was
in the black light,
it almost felt like
we were under the ocean
looking at a jellyfish.
It was really extraordinary.
I liked it very much.
-Thank you.
-You have
a great sophistication.
You understand sensationalism.
You know,
your play of material
in regular light
and in black light
worked incredibly.
-Mah-Jing,
tell us about your look.
-First of all,
this is my second look.
So, I wanted to create
something where,
when she comes into the room,
they see texture, but then
when the black light come on,
all of the detail
that I put into the dress,
in terms of the painting
and sculpting her body,
I wanted that part to glow.
-Well, this caused
a lot of uproar
with the judges
when we saw it.
With the daylight,
it looks fine, but...
with the black light,
it just looks
like there's a crime scene.
-Why did you put the pink
where you put it?
At first, it was all white,
and you couldn't see anything.
And I thought that the pink...
-Okay.
-Would do the same thing.
So when I came out
and I saw that it didn't,
I just tried to...
-So that was
not your intention.
-I didn't think
it was gonna show up
in daylight...
-Got it.
-Because
the other colors didn't.
-I don't even know
what it is I'm looking at,
to be honest with you.
