I saw Madonna in concert.

how to do this so easily?

I guess you figured out

because this is a hint
for your next challenge.

unconventional challenge.

- And welcome to our beautiful
and pristine location.

I am delighted to introduce you
to Editor-in-Chief

of "Marie Claire" Magazine,
Anne Fulenwider.

Welcome, Anne.
- Hi, Tim, thank you.

Good morning, designers.

You know, at "Marie Claire,"
we love fashion,

and we love the creative people

who are moving it forward
just like you.

We also love the smart,
innovative people

moving the tech world forward.

So today we're gonna
marry the two.

We're challenging you
to merge the worlds

of technology and fashion.

- Designers, this is

an unconventional materials
challenge.

You are going to be using
outdated technology

to create a modern
and fashionable look.

- These dumpsters are full
of yesterday's technology.

All these items need
a new life,

and you are going
to give them that.

- So you each have
a shopping cart.

When your shopping carts
are full, I will call time.

And you have one day
for this challenge.

So are you ready
to dumpster dive?

all: Yes.

- I'm just ready
to get this party started.

- Three, two, one, go.

- Whoa!

- I don't know
what I just grabbed.

- I'm gonna make WALL-E.

- Ooh, hello.

- Has anybody seen
any more Polaroids?

- This will definitely be
a challenge,

given that this is not material

in the sense of fabrics
or anything that are woven.

This is going to require a lot
of thought and imagination.

- All right, designers,
time's up.

You have reached a saturation
level with these carts.

Good work, designers.
I want you each to take

your shopping cart and push it
back to the workroom,

and I will meet you there.

He seemed kind of weird
all morning, just really quiet.

- I know the shape.
How I'm gonna implement

the shape is gonna

for what they've had to say
about my dowdy or mumsy

- I think this is really
going down the mumsy,

- I'm gonna push the envelope

I'm going really sexy up top.

I'm going really short
at the bottom.

I'm really excited about it.

There are a few things
to underscore.

One is, you need to transform
these unconventional materials

into modern fashion.

The ideal is
that whatever you design

doesn't look like what it is.

Now, this needs to be wearable.

If your models

can barely move...
[laughter]

it's gonna be a bit
of an issue.

You have until 11:00 tonight.

And you have to take care of it.

- You have to do
what you have to do,

for a reason.

is an amazing opportunity.

But faced with the situation
I'm in,

it's the right thing to do.

- You never know
who's going through what.

- Wow.

- I don't know why, but I love
unconventional challenges.

- So I start working
on the wires,

and I realize they're not as
easy as I thought they would be.

I first need to peel them apart

and remove the hard cord edge
from inside.

And then they
become much more moldable.

- Ow.
- [bleep]

- What a quiet room.

I heard tons
of pounding earlier.

Are you having fun?

- Yeah.
- Yes.

- Good.
Share the fun with me.

- All right.
- Hi, Lindsey.

- What are these?

- This came out of the inside
of a radio.

- And what are these?

- Those are keys.

- I like the fact
that we can still read them.

- So I was considering
just, like,

doing the keys
over it to the waist

and then possibly at the bottom,
moving into this,

because it is gonna
be longer in the back.

I know I'm not gonna have enough
of this, and I know that--

- Well, but does this
have to be a gown?

- No, but I kind of wanted
to do something...romantic.

- It's pretty romantic
if it's a shorter skirt.

- Yeah?

- Lindsey, carry on.

- This was my original sketch.
- Uh-huh.

- And I mean, I love playing
with the silhouette

and the shape
of a woman's body.

And so I wanted
to apply the wire

and make it very strong
and sharp.

- Candice's dress is very,
very cool.

She has this edge to her
that a lot of designers

don't have in the competition.

- While we were dumpster diving,

I found a container
full of Polaroids.

So I created all these prints,
one by one.

- You actually created this
from the found object.

- Yeah.
- So they're all attached?

- I can still pull it off
if I don't want to go with it,

but I wanted to give it
something

that they all were
straight on.

Do you think
that I should cut these down

or just keep them as Polaroids?

- No! Oh, no,
I keep them as Polaroids.

That, I think,
is a huge strength of this.

Don't doubt yourself.

- I saw this aluminum
piping.

I want to make it
look like armor.

So I wanted to kind of play

with texture with it.
- Well, you are.

It's a beautiful surface.
- Oh, thanks.

- What happens when it gets down
to the broader skirt or a dress?

- The scales
are gonna get larger.

- How big do they get?
- You don't need to, like,

have them stuck together.

You can go like that,
you know,

and trim them so it
all looks like one piece.

- Well, but they're, like,

a moderned,
unexpected, new paillette.

- This is my base
of my silhouette for my design.

- Okay.
- And these are mouse pads.

- Oh, I know what they are.

- I'm trying to make a decision

of creating
some type of texture.

But I didn't want
to go too far over the top

because a lot of the detailing
comes in the back.

So I was trying to figure out,
do I keep it simple--

- No.
- Okay.

- You don't keep it simple.
- All right.

- There's too much ambition
in this room.

In this form,
it would worry me.

- Well, I have these.
But I don't have a lot of them.

I would probably use the wrong
side versus the smoother side.

I just feel like that would be
a little bit more expected,

to use that side, but
with this it's kind of like,

"Well, what is that?"

- I like this idea.

- You like that idea?
- Yeah, I do.

- Okay.
- You have a good base,

but it needs to evolve.
- I'll make it work.

- I'm super excited
about this challenge.

- I'm kind of scared
of her look.

It's a little intimidating.

- It's a little Big Bird-ish.

- But if the rest of the garment
is in service to the shoulders,

it could really work.

- Oh, yeah.
I have a parachute, you know,

and it's called immunity.

I'm just gonna
go real crazy,

'cause this is the only time
I can make a bird outfit.

- Hi, Joe.

- I feel like
I need to kind of

sex up my design
a little bit.

- Okay.
- I have actually been

able to sew the wire,
so it's giving me structure.

The back is really low.

I'm gonna wait to fit it
to have it fit perfectly.

And now I'm playing with
different appliqués.

So I have three different colors
of blue.

And then of course,
I have a ton of black.

I'm also gonna paint
the muslin,

so that there could be portions
where I may leave muslin.

- I mean, another term
for the unconventional challenge

is fool the eye.
- Yeah.

- As long as we're fooled,
it's successful.

- And then I've got
all these really cool, like,

little chip boards.
I feel confident though.

- Okay.
Well, then in that case,

I'm gonna leave you alone.
- Cool.

- I think Joe
might be in trouble

because he's not thinking
about the materials.

He's thinking sexy,
which is something

that he's had a problem
with not doing enough of.

But I think that
for an unconventional challenge,

it's more important
to be creative than sexy.

- My initial design idea was to
create an off-the-shoulder look.

- My concern about this is
that it screams mouse pads.

I mean, even Edmond,
who's using the mouse pads,

is going to cover them
with a texture.

- I understand.

But I really like
this effect.

I like the way it is.
- Okay, Laurie.

- I hope it's a good wow.

- Well, I want to know
more about what you're doing.

- Okay.
So this wire I split open,

and obviously,
I found all of this.

- Oh, that's what this is.

- I think this
could be a big hit.

My sizing is so off.

I'm about 3 inches shy
of covering her backside.

This stuff shrank so much
from the paint.

So I'm having to go back
to the drawing board,

recut some panels to put
into the back of the dress.

- I just heard something rip.
- Oh, don't worry about it.

Yeah, it ripped,
but it's okay.

For model fittings,
I whip out a crop top,

and it doesn't fit.

No?
- No.

- I'm basically starting
from scratch right now.

Now I feel that my model
is worried about me too.

And I'll just make sure
I take your measurements.

I'll figure something out.

I was a little scared there

My direction
is changing slightly.

muslin because I've painted it.

So it's not really holding.

So instead of using the wire
to create the paneling,

I am kind of
trying to cheat the eye,

as Tim would say,

and I'm using the mouse pads
instead.

they're gonna finish?

'Cause I'm, like, really
worried, and I'm normally not.

- I'm with you, Candice.

- Do you still
have a back to do?

- Oh, yeah.
- We just got to speed it up,

- As much as I would like
to have made, like,

the coolest dress ever,

I feel comfortable with
what I made.

I think it looks like an actual
print from a distance.

on there that if it falls off,

I used materials
that nobody else used.

- It looks like embroidery.

- It looks completely different
than everybody else,

and you could just see
the detail and the time

that I spent on it.

to create something gothic

and bold has just been awesome.

- She kind of looks
like a Tim Burton character.

- Somewhat evil.

- I've never made
anything like this before.

expresses

a different side of me.

tell us about your look

and the materials that you used.

- For my look, I started out
with computer mouse pads

to create this fringe effect.

I took a bunch
of computer keyboards

and smashed all of the keys out,
reversed them,

and added them up
near the top area.

For the back part here,

these are wires
from a radio or something.

There was an old VHS camcorder.

So I took the bag,

and I created a clutch for her
from the interior of it.

Yeah, that's my look.

- I like this a lot.

It has a lot of interesting
detail in the front.

I think the fringe
is very current.

I like the keyboard detail.

So it does feel futuristic
but at the same time current.

I liked it a lot.
- Well, thank you.

- Gave it a high score.
- I love this look too.

I think that she
looks very fashion forward.

She looks very modern.

She looks very sexy
but yet sophisticated.

- The first thing
I thought when I saw it was,

I'd wear this.
And I thought

what was
really unique is that

it's unconventional material,

but it seemed
like a wearable material.

So I thought
it was really well-done.

- I think you did wonderful
on this challenge.

And I love that you didn't
do it as an all-over

and that you played
with dimension.

I also really appreciate that
you made an accessory today.

- This dress feels like it came
right off the pages

of "Marie Claire" Magazine.

- Wow.
- And you know, it's sexy.

But yet,
it's short but not too short.

And it's got a plunging neckline
without feeling cheap.

It has a real modernity to it
that I really value and love.

Joseph, tell us about your look
and the materials that you used.

- So I started with
a muslin base that I painted.

And then I applied wire
around the front center.

And then I used mouse pads
and wire to cover,

to create a retro-mod kind
of idea.

And then I used the wires
as the straps.

- You know what, I don't think
this was the most creative use

of the resources.

When I compare you to the rest
of the people that are here,

I see some fantasy.

I see them
using all these materials

in very interesting ways.

And I think you
did something very safe.

- Okay.
- Joseph,

I was not too impressed
with this look, I have to say.

I didn't feel this was
as strong

as some of the others.
- Sure.

- It's a little bit weird
on the bottom, the cords there

and the placement, center-front.
- Yeah.

- Joseph, I liked your use
of color.

I thought that it was
a really good idea

to put the blue in the middle

and then the black
on the sides.

It gave it a slimming look.

But it did seem a bit stiff.

But I think
it was a good effort.

- Thank you.
- It just is not

a fashion forward dress, for me,
especially the back.

Would you mind turning around?

It's a very conventional shape

and style
with the spaghetti straps.

And I also think that the use
of the mouse pad is very bulky.

So it doesn't look flattering.

It's not something
that I look at and say, "Oh,

I can't wait to wear that."

- Thank you, Joseph.

- Mm-hmm.

- Swapnil,
tell us about your look

and the materials that you used.

- I wanted to work
with movement.

And I wanted to take the wires
and make them whimsical.

It will take you in a world
of fantasy and dreaming.

So obviously, I thought I
would bring something sculptural

to show the rigidity of the wire

as well as the fluidity
of the wire.

That's it.

- What is the skirt made out of?

- That's muslin.

- I have mixed feelings.

I like the top part of it.

You see her boobies
peeking through a little bit.

It's a hint. I just don't love
it from the waist down.

You know, it really looks
like when you go behind a TV,

and there's this whole bunch
of cables and whatever,

and they're just kind
of knotted up together.

It's a little messy.

- The bottom falls short.
- Yeah.

- It looks really childish
and haphazard

and it doesn't look
as polished.

- I expected
so much more from you.

This was a huge disappointment.

This is the challenge
that you should've

swept everybody
off that runway.

And it should go back
in the garbage.

- Ashley, tell us
about your look

and the materials that you used.

- The first thing
I grabbed was a bucket

full of Polaroid pictures.

And when I got back
into the workroom,

the first thing I did was start
breaking all of the Polaroids

out of their shell.

And I noticed that the chemicals

that were inside
started bleeding.

So I wanted to create
some type of c*ck dress

or fun dress with it.

- So creative.

A dress made out of memories.

- Yes.
- I love this dress.

I love the shine.

- So I saw this,
like, aluminum tubing,

and I went for that.

So I tried to, like,

mix it together
and build sort of,

like, a little futuristic,
fun textile.

It was fun.

think that this dress,

someone could actually wear out,

and no one would know that
this is unconventional material.

It is insane.

- I used flatter keys
to create a texture for the top.

I used the inside of a CD case,

like CD holders,
to create the skirt.

And I did some layering
and also some pleating in it

to give it a little bit
of, like, vibrancy and movement.

- To be honest with you,

this was not my favorite.
- Okay.

- I could tell those
were the CD covers.

They kind of look like tissue,

like Kleenexes
patched together.

I understand
you smashed the keyboard,

but I could also see that.

It was very evident,
the materials that you used.

- I don't see
much imagination here.

- I can understand
what you're saying.

- You know, it's almost
like you need some Swapnil juice

or mojo,
a little bit in there.

- Swapnil juice sounds awesome.

- I don't even want
to imagine that.
