- I grew up with Mary Kay.
Everybody had Mary Kay parties.
The people who sold a lot
had a pink car.
So I am really excited that
this is a Mary Kay challenge.
- We've brought
you here because,
from this vantage point,
you have a spectacular
and inspiring view of the city.
Just as New York
has this iconic architecture,
hion has its iconic designs.
Think about the pencil skirt,
the wrap dress,
the trench coat,
just to name a few.
So for this challenge,
we'd like you to take one
of these iconic fashion designs
and bring
your own interpretation to it.
- Mary Kay's new City Modern
makeup collection
is both modern
and metropolitan.
It was inspired
by city landscapes
and the sleek architecture
of timeless buildings,
which is why
we brought you here.
So you will have a Mary Kay
makeup consultation with me,
to give your look
the modern beauty
that will bring it to life.

based on a classic.
I'm making a black
and white wrap dress--
something that's basic
with a twist.
So that way I can't
get called out
on having a million things
going on again.
- I'm making a very classic
princess-seam c*ck dress--
black and white,
which is my thing.
Leather, which is my thing.
Modern, classic silhouette,
chic, sexy, fierce, strong.
I am extremely excited.
- I'm trying to do something
a little architectural.
I'm designing a tent coat
with a ruffle sleeve
and a turtleneck dress
in white,
with a little bit
of pink popping out.
I'm also keeping
my dress rather simple,
so that I have enough time
for everything.
It's the best strategy
for me.
- Designers, time is up.
We're headed to Mood.
- Mood, finally.
- I have been waiting for this
moment for a really long time.

looking at this garment
and thinking, "I need
to change something,"

pinpoint what it is.

I'm intrigued by this.
What are you doing?
- It's a jacket, pleated
in the front and belted here,
so it plays
with a woman's silhouette.
It gives it a bit
of a drama effect.
I'm in love with it.

- I think it's so chic
and modern--
and just strong and edgy
and feminine, all in one.

a riff on a pencil skirt
and a shift dress
at the same time.

I went on a date with New York,
and I hadn't seen

what would I want to wear?
- Oh, that's a wonderful way
to think of it.

come together really well.

- A little lost.
I'm so relieved to see
what Tim has to say
and see if I'm going
in the right direction--

like, fatal mistakes.
You know, last time
I got critiqued
for having too many details,
and I'm just trying not to make
the same mistakes again.

- You're hesitant about what--
about the length?
- Just getting
the proportion right.
- Well, when your model's here,
you'll know.
And you have enough here
to put something on her.
- Yeah, definitely.
- I think that Gabby's
creating this worried,

- I find this to be

your interpretation to it.

inspired a lot by, is,
like, Whitney Houston's
"I'm Your Baby Tonight"--
a zip-up jumpsuit.

- And this one I'm going
in the direction of, like,
a young Annie Lennox.
- Personally,
I'm much more intrigued by this.
This steps up and out in a way
that really distinguishes you.
- I agree, I agree.

to a point where--

I'd know this was you.
- I wanted to take a basic
white T-shirt and give it,
like, a modern,
industrial, New York feel.
And I wanted to do something
fun, 'cause I like fun.
- I think you have

compelling look here.
- Here, I'm taking
the basketball jersey
and updating it more
to a dress.
- Nina could very likely
say to you,
"Geoffrey Beene
did this in the 1980s."
- I'm not necessarily selling
to the client
who bought that in the '80s.

- I found this really,
really cool fabric.
It was in the scuba section.
- Mood has a scuba section?
Who knew?
- I'm playing up the pencil
skirt and then the peplum,
but I'm making it modern
with the textiles that are used.
- I'd also drop that back
as far as you can.

- The style that Joseph
decided to do is very matronly.
And all I see is him continuing
to do the same style
over and over again.
- How would you describe
this iconic design?
- Like, you know,
Dior's new look of,
with the--
accentuating the--the waist.
But I still want to keep it me,
'cause I'm using good stuff.
- Well, it has to be you.
It's your interpretation.
- Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
But I'm keeping the front
kind of modern--
like, having the pencil skirt
come a little bit in the front.
So it's kind of like, um--
so it's kind of like two--
it's hard to describe.
But I want to start it
up here.

- What do you mean,

- So this will be
the whole front,
and then this is coming
in the back.

not a separate piece.

actually going to execute this.

for the runway show.
And, as you know,
he is your mentor
and will not be
judging your looks.
That said,
he will have the Tim Gunn save.
If at some point
during the competition,
he disagrees with the judges,
then he can use his save
to bring that designer back.
We also have
an anonymous runway show,
which means we, the judges,
do not know which designer
created which look.

- I feel like my design
definitely stands out.
- I like the billow
in the back.
- My construction
could be a little bit better.
The neck should be up more.
But I just hope
the judges like it.
They're either gonna
love it or hate it.

- I like putting materials
together
that you normally
wouldn't see together.
She's got these, like,
mod, crazy, white-black heels,
and, like,
a wicked high bun,
and a crazy graphic T-shirt.
I think it looks
frickin' awesome.

- I think the garment
looks absolutely stunning.
I think that the top and
the skirt fit her wonderfully.
One concern that I do have
is that you're not really
able to see the detailing from
all the topstitching I've done.
- The topstitch is huge.

are able to see it
from where they're sitting.

and she looks comfortable.

I think the orange
is a little more potent

I am proud of this look,

that I have the potential

to the challenge by creating
something that you would see
walking through the city--
something that's inspired
by architecture--
and thinking

I think I nailed it.

for a very specific person.
And I think the judges
might get that.
It's a dangerous look,
but some women
like to play dangerously.

- Standing back and looking
at my model, Hanna,
in my dress, I'm actually
feeling pretty good.
It looks like something
a girl living in New York City
would actually wear.

- My favorite part
of this piece
is the element of surprise.
It's got a pretty
high neckline on the front,
and then, when you turn around,
then there's pretty
much no fabric.
I like drama in all my clothes.
I like to play with the senses.
And this one did exactly that.

- Watching my look come down
the runway is so awesome.
I like it in every angle.
She looks powerful.

- I just think the skirt
could fit better.

tell us about your look.
- When I saw the skyline
of New York, the first thing
that came to my mind was
"Breakfast at Tiffany's."
So I wanted to take
the classic little black dress
and make it modern,
make it sexy.
- I really,
really like this look.
There's something
that's really youthful about it
that I'm really drawn to.
It's playful, and it's fun,
and it's the right amount
of being simple and streamlined
but also having a lot
of interest.
I would wear it.
- Thank you.
- Well, I think
this is a party-girl dress.
And, you know,
the best party girls
in the world live in New York.
- And it was original.
- Thank you.
- I like the fact
that there's so much fabric,
but when she turns around,
she's bare.
- Now, it was a nice surprise.
She turned around,
it was like, "Whoa.
This is sexy from the back."
Really nice,
the way you cut
this super low.
- Lindsey,
tell us about your look.
- So I decided
to create something
that was really
approachable.
I definitely wanted
to make a jacket,
and then I also did, like,
a pencil skirt.
But initially, the idea was to,
like, split up just,
like, the classic, like,
shift dress, really.
- On the positive note,
you've made a lot
of pieces in one day.
- Yes.
- But I'm not loving this look,
I have to tell you.
Here you have your model
swallowed by all of this stuff.
And then the material
for the two-piece--
it looks so thick
that you can really see that.
I'm not loving this.
- The whole thing looks thick.
- I'm not going to even try
to understand who this girl is.
- Gabrielle, tell us
about your look.
- So, my original inspiration
was the 1950s--
a tent coat and a chic dress
were my original inspirations.
And I took from the skyline
the kind of architecture
and then I added a pop
of pink in the dress,
to kind of reference
Mary Kay.
- Did you say a pop of pink?
- Yeah.
- Smidgen.
- Yeah, smidgen.
- Smidgen of pink.
The first thing that
jumped out at me was the hem.
You know, I thought
somebody chewed it up.
Was--did something go wrong?
- I've dropped my scissors,
like, six times,
and they just don't cut anymore.
- Also, why did she never
take the coat off
so we could see the dress?
- Because I don't
really like the dress.
- Can we have a look at it now?
- Sure.
It's rough, I know.
I had to put darts
in a jersey dress.
- Now I know why
you never took it off.
- Forget the technical problems
with this dress.
There is a serious problem
with the proportion.
The jacket hits very low.
The skirt--
it's an awkward length.
The jacket has no shape,
so it's almost
swallowing the model.
She's got the wrong hairdo,
she's got the wrong makeup,
she looks very mumsy.
- This isn't my best work,
but I do like the silhouette.
- I think the jacket
is actually really fun,
and there's something really fun
about the sleeves.
And it's interesting
and exciting.
I just think that
the pieces together
don't make the impact
that they could have
if they were done a bit
differently,
with different items.

tell us about your look.
- So, I really wanted
to play on the wrap dress
with two different types
of fabric, so it's not just one.
And make it comfortable--
soft, but had a little bit
of architectural lines
and stiffness,
because it's New York,
so you have to have
a little bit of toughness.
- Not your finest moment.
Looks unbalanced.
I didn't even really get
that it's a wrap dress.
I thought sort of,
like, half a '50s toga.
And I just
don't see any originality.
It's sort
of like Miss Muffet, meh.
- It is looking like
a maternity dress from the mall.
- Yeah, wrote "maternity."
- Oh, yes, that's awful.
- Bring on the crazy,
and leave the mall clothes
in the mall.
- Okay, sure.
Okay.
- What I would've loved
to see is the waistline
dropped maybe one inch.
- Okay.
- I think that would've
made it, kind of,
a little more complete.
- Sure.
- But overall,
it's got a very nice vibe to it.

- Well, for
the Mary Kay challenge,
I wanted to play with
the basic princess-seam dress.
So I wanted to play
with the lines
and kind of accentuate
the woman's silhouette.
- Well, as you guys know,
this is a anonymous runway show.
But with your look, I knew
immediately that it was you,
because you told us that you
love working with leather.
So when I saw
this look come out,
I knew this was you, Candice.
- I, as well, knew immediately
that this was yours,
and that's a great thing.
That means your signature
is coming out
and that you have a look.
- I really like this look.
I think that the dress
is really so sculptural.
And there's something
about the shine of the leather
that really feels, like,
very New York skyline for me.
- Kiernan,

- I love this.
It's the right amount
of fierce and chic,
but still remains
super classic,
just like New York.

of the strap
is also really nice, I think--
especially with the rest
of it being very feminine.

this really nice movement
that I think is New York

he decided to do

on the detail
of not being perfectly made.
