actually finding

the unconventional materials.

magnificent cruise ship,

the "Celebrity Summit."

And I am delighted to introduce

you to the president and CEO

of Celebrity Cruises,

Lisa Lutoff-Perlo.

Hello, hello, designers.

Welcome onboard "Celebrity."

Designers, Celebrity Cruises

is known as the epitome

of modern luxury vacation

experiences, and travels

to every destination

you can imagine

around the globe.

That's right, Tim.

Seven continents,

incredible places, from rugged

Alaska, to exotic Thailand.

So, designers, let's get

to the challenge.

You will notice that we have

seven suitcases, each of which

has a different exotic

location on it.

There's seven suitcases...

there are 14 of you.

[all chattering and laughing]

So, this is your first

team challenge.

Whoa!

You are going to be working

in teams of two.

Each team will be creating

one high-end day-to-night look.

This look will transition from

the exotic destination that

the travelers are experiencing

during the day, to coming back

onboard ship, and experiencing

fine dining and entertainment.

Now, let's pick your teams.

The first designer is...

Amanda.

And Amanda will be working

with...

Gabrielle.

[both laughing]

All right, we got this, girl!

Gabby is a little bit like me

in the sense that she knows

what she wants to do,

which I'm thinking, "Okay,

this is either gonna be

really [bleep] awesome,

or a total nightmare."

Amanda and Gabrielle,

you get to choose a suitcase.

The destination on that suitcase

will serve as the inspiration

for your look.

Either Greek Isles or

South of France, which--

Ashley, and Ashley, you will be

working with...

Ashley's aesthetic

and my aesthetic, I think,

could blend well.

Lindsey, you will be working

So Lindsey and Jake,

a suitcase with a destination.

I'm actually excited.

I've been to Hong Kong

a few different times.

It's where I actually trained.

Hopefully it gives us

maybe a leg up?

At least that's what

I'm thinking.

Our next designer is Laurie.

And Laurie, you will be

working with...

Swapnil.

India?

Oh, yeah.

What are you choosing?

Isn't it obvious?

It means the expectations will

I'm not one of those

designers who's going to run

away from a strong challenge.

I'm just hoping I'm not

gonna get paired with Edmond.

Nothing personal, but he has

immunity, so I know that I'm

the one in trouble and not him.

Kelly, you will be working

with Blake.

At this point, the people

left are myself, Edmond,

Hanmiao, and Merline,

and I'm praying, please God,

Our next designer is Edmond.

It's evident that you're

paired together, and your

inspiration is St. Petersburg.

He's really good

at construction, so I'm,

like, super pumped up.

Inside each suitcase, you will

find fabric that corresponds

to the spirit of your

destination, and back

in the workroom, we have

additional fabrics for you,

off to sketch your design ideas.

for lunch, as you sketch.

sketch something out.

I'm thinking maybe we should

combine our aesthetics

to do one piece.

We're gonna do it, all right,

cool.

Our style is so different.

I'm more focused on, like,

a structure, like, you know...

like a sharp edge, kind of

oversize, you know, womenswear.

And Edmond, he focus on

something very feminine, pretty,

something draped.

So, how about we sketch

separate, and then--

That'll work, let's go.

Mmm.

We got a lot of the green

and gold.

I don't mind this, we could

always do, like, a kimono-esque

jacket, you know?

They're just not a kimono

culture.

Kimonos are more Japanese than

Hong Kong.

I know.

It just gives that nod.

So I was thinking more

like a drapey--

so this comes from the sari.

I like that.

As we see the fabric,

me and Laurie actually said

these things together.

"Pants, crop-top, jacket."

So we are trying to re-create

the sari into a more modern way.

I mean, what worries me most is

whether will be...too India.

That's not what we want here.

Designers, time is up.

Assemble all of your things

Even just in brainstorming,

I said, "Hey, maybe we'll do

something kimono-esque, maybe

we could do a smoking jacket,

I feel like Jake is

combating the ideas that I have

without bringing

any other ideas to the table.

For this challenge, we got to

go on a Celebrity cruise ship,

and it's pretty fabulous.

So now we are creating a look

based on different destinations

that "Celebrity" cruises.

The outfit also has to

transition from day to night,

and be a high-fashion look.

This length is good

for the crop-top, right?

Mm-hmm.

And then just the top.

Yeah.

When it comes to personal style,

I love Tracee Ellis Ross, okay?

I used to watch "Girlfriends."

I didn't care about

the storyline, I just wanted

to see what she was wearing.

And how are you doing

with that cape so far?

Uh, the neck is kind of,

like, making me nervous.

With this challenge, I feel

that I'm steering the ship.

I'm the captain.

I'm working on creating

this dress, and she's working

on the draping of the cape.

The biggest challenge working

with Merline is trying

to keep her focused.

And how are you working

Good, so what are you doing?

This is the fabric

that we got in our suitcase,

and we want to use all three.

Yeah.

So it's gonna be a fitted

shirt in the front.

Draped cowl neck in the back.

And then with the pants,

I wanted to do a box pleat.

Well, we know you can do

a box pleat.

Yeah, and we're gonna have

a third piece.

We wanted to do that

as a cape.

So it's a capelet.

So how is Team Caribbean?

It was a rocky start.

Yeah.

What was going on?

Uh...

Our style, mine is more like

non-feminine, and he's so,

like, feminine, you know,

show the body.

It's a collaboration.

Yeah, so the top part,

it still have my style.

And what's the skirt?

The skirt is actually

this material.

This breathable fabric,

it has a flow.

All right, how is this

day-to-evening?

Why wouldn't you either have her

come out in what's basically

a little sun outfit?

Well, that was my first

thought, doing a swimsuit under.

Well, can I tell you,

I'm in support of that.

I mean, for me, the solution

to this you've already

presented, and it should just

be done.

His aesthetic is very

the classic look, and then

mine is very architecture,

and so we're kind of merging

those two together.

So we're making a dress

and we're making a cape.

Okay.

Inspired by St. Petersburg,

so it's definitely opulence,

garishness.

Let's keep it to opulence

and remove--

[laughs]

And keep going.

Yeah, it's all being ex*cuted

in this fabric?

an inspiration from the sari.

How it's been draped,

but more modern.

This fabric has a lot of

fluidity, the drape will fall--

We're not in love

with the paisley, though.

So, you're in favor,

and Laurie, you're dubious?

What's that?

This is another option

that we had.

Wow.

It's much lighter.

This--you just found

the secret sauce.

I guess I did.

Swapnil and Laurie together

are super dangerous,

but me and Blake are gonna give

everyone a run for their money.

We're thinking of doing,

like, a modern twist

of a Greek goddess.

So it's a jumpsuit

so the front will be

all white and clean,

and then when she walks,

she just has this, like--yeah.

Super wide leg.

It strikes me as being

a very appropriate look for the

Greek Isles for this challenge.

We want it to be sexy,

because the South of France

is sexy, you know?

Yeah, right.

The way we're making it

a little more evening is

in the back it's fitted, and

then it has a cutout right here.

Excellent.

We got the Tim Gunn stamp

I really like from Hong Kong

the idea of, like,

hard and soft.

Mm-hmm, I'm with you.

So we kind of wanted to throw

in a moderately structured vest.

I'm considering doing a vest

in this, even though it's a lot,

it's Hong Kong.

Just a suggestion, what if

the vest here is in the black,

but the shawl lapel is in this?

I like you, Jake, but I would

sooner die.

Lindsey needs approval,

and clearly, I am not someone

that she takes stock in.

emotional, what's going on?

how much she influences

my design aesthetic.

It's so surreal.

I'm, like, on cloud nine

judges do not know which

designer created which look.

There's movement in the top.

There's a story in the cape.

There's life in the bell-bottom.

It just feels like Venice.

You know where this woman

is going.

I like it.

I'm happy with it.

At the end of the day,

it just works out amazing, and

I'm so glad that me and Candice

got to collaborate on this look.

The drape is going

beautifully.

One hand in the pocket,

and the hair, the makeup.

I think me and Laurie did

a really good job.

Which part of this look

would Tracee wear?

That's all I could think about.

She would wear the pants,

she'd wear the top,

and she'd wear the sash.

She'd wear everything.

I don't love it.

I don't hate it.

It was Lindsey's look,

and for me, all I can see is

the failure in our teamwork,

and that sticks me pretty hard.

She looks really lovely,

but I'm so disappointed with how

the past 24 hours have gone,

I don't really feel like I can

enjoy it, sitting with Jake.

I feel really good

and I think she looks beautiful.

I think she's a modern

interpretation of,

you know, my classic style,

and I'm really happy.

This whole challenge is

really not being me.

I don't think there's a lot of

creativity that came out of me

for that garment, not like

something I'm gonna be proud of.

It's safe.

It could've been an amazing

swimsuit, but once again,

the construction, detailing,

it just wasn't there.

It looks like, you know,

we pretty much rushed

and created something

and just pretty much threw it

on the runway.

I think it's just too much.

The straps, the floral,

the yellow, it's not my style.

It's good.

Really?

I think this look does

represent Amanda and I

very well.

I think maybe it leans

a little bit towards my

point of view more so than hers,

but I think we did a good job.

The pants are so well made.

I created the top.

because when I think of stripes,

I see the guys in the gondolier.

and it really works for me,

Our inspiration was India.

We created a crop top

with a high-waisted pant,

and then you want to talk about

more of the top,

which is what he created.

Yeah, I mean, the whole idea

was to get inspired by the sari.

Wanted to make it modern.

You kept the silhouette

of the sari, but in the choice

of fabric, there is something

very effortless.

I love the drape,

I love the little detail

on the shoulder.

The only problem that I had

was the fit of the pants.

Uh-oh. [laughs]

Will you take this top off

for me?

Because the crotch...

of these pants,

I don't know about that.

The pant--I'm gonna be crazy

here--it doesn't bother me.

[laughter]

The drop crotch-y thing

does not bother me, maybe

'cause I love a drop crotch.

your look, your destination,

and who did what.

We wanted to create, like,

a 35-year-old lady

who wanted, like, the idea

of the fantasy Hong Kong.

I patterned the vest,

the skirt, shorts,

cut and sewed the vest,

the shorts, the top and bottom

of the dress together.

I sewed all the seams,

as far as, like,

the center front and hem,

and Jake sewed the halter

together and draped the halter.

Jake, do you have

anything to add?

If this is a top look, this

is definitely Lindsey's look.

I appreciate that.

We are not two people

who work well together.

I really took a back seat this

time around, because I feared

that if I didn't, we wouldn't

complete a look, that we would

actually end up fighting and not

sending a model down the runway.

There's a lot I like about it

and a lot I don't like about it.

The choice of fabrics

is very pretty.

I would not have put the split

up the front.

I actually would have just

made it a dress.

The shorts underneath is

a little confusing to me,

but overall, I just think

it's pretty.

When it came down the runway,

it had movement, it had color,

it had print.

You guys got good textiles,

so kudos.

I like the mix of the colors,

which I don't usually like

together.

The vest, which has the pockets,

I kind of like.

I like this look.

First, it did make me think

of Chinese Christmas.

But because there is so much

gold in both of the fabrics,

it does work in a strange way.

And it's made really well.

Our destination was

about your look, your

destination, and who did what.

We had St. Petersburg.

Joe is very...classic.

I'm just in love with

architecture and kind of playing

with shapes.

I don't know if you want to say

something else.

When Tim came around, he felt

like--that dreaded M-word,

"matronly."

He didn't want it to look

matronly or too mature.

However, that is my aesthetic.

That's who I sell to and that's

just who I am as a designer,

so we decided that

I would tackle the dress

and she would tackle the cape.

How did the two of you work

together?

I think we worked together

okay.

It was definitely a lot of time

that was spent going back and

forth with her about how to

draft the pattern, how to drape

it on the form, which was taking

a lot of time, and I ended up

putting it together

quite hastefully.

I think there's something

wonderful that you design

for an older customer...

Sure.

But if this is the direction,

I don't think this is taking

an older customer anywhere

further.

You have this cape

that is not really a cape.

It's almost like

a silly side bib.

Then there's that asymmetry.

I did the pants and Amanda

did the top, but the design

was collaborative.

And the two of you

Yeah, we did.

The bust having asymmetry

and then having this under piece

that creates actual

physical asymmetry is hard

for your design.

There's just too much

going on.

Like, if you have seven ideas,

get rid of half of 'em.

There are just so many design

elements all put into one look.

The high neck, then you see a

little skin on the side because

it is super short.

It is super long,

then there's a bell bottom,

and then it doesn't fit right.

We had a side bib,

and now we have a side mullet.
