We're very excited about it.

You will be creating a textile
design and a modern runway look

Inspired by your cultural
heritage.

That sounds good.

And mondo won this challenge
in season eight, and I wanted

You to share with the designers
what your experience was like.

This particular challenge
changed my life, tim.

Yes.

That day was magical for me.

These pluses are positive
signs, and I've been, uh,

Hiv-positive for ten years...

And so I wanted to pull from
the past, but I also wanted to

Give something back...

Of who I am now.

I think we do our best work as
designers when we show truth.

I think it's really important
to dig deep and really make it

Matter.

photographs from my childhood

Until today, and it is really
inspiring, and it's supposed to

Inspire me and also, you know,
make me think about who I am and

Where I came from.

My oldest and dearest friend,
irina, we've been best friends

For over 15 years.

it makes me even more

My dad is an artist, and my
grandfather was a big artist,

And he would teach me things and
talk to me about art, shapes,

And forms, and I still have his
hand in everything what I do.

Because all the times in my
childhood in ukraine were the

This is the hp textile--
oh, god, I love that one.

but, like, you know, you,

Whatever, and then you generate
it to the fabric.

This is amazing.

I mean, if you think of the
colors that--just like, of

Belarus, in general.

For this challenge, we have
to use hp technology to create

Our own print based on our
heritage and background.

I'm thinking about my
grandfather's aesthetics, my

Father's aesthetic.

My textile is inspired by
traditional ornament used in

Traditional costumes, and I'm
taking it to the next level.

It's simple, but it's intricate.

It's beautiful.

I was gonna do, uh, churches.

I definitely want something
that's bold.

This is definitely used in
religious functions a lot.

This whole thing also relates to
my aesthetic.

I love your story.

In our religion, one thing
that's used are flowers,

Specifically hibiscus flowers,
and if you look at a lot of

The--the indian gods, you'll see
that they're actually holding

One in their hand.

I want rhythm.

I want movement, and I want a
little bit of conflict too.

We decide to go with my growing
up.

The troubles with, like,
bullying in school--

That was my heritage, 'cause
that's what's made me who I am

I'm starting out my sketch today
with these abstract skeleton

As you know, in our culture
the clothes are extremely

And a whole feeling that is very
organic.

I look at this--and I'll be
blunt--i see an homage to a

Menstrual cycle.

I-i am absolut--i don't
understand.

I mean, it looks like...

Cloths that have soaked up
blood.

Do you see it?

Not really.

And--designers, am I crazy?

As you mentioned it, yes.

I just hope no one's
offended by it...

To me, this looks very "don't
bully me" suit of armor.

Where I actually really love my
design.

I achieved a lot by doing things
that I haven't done before, like

Using cotton.

And I feel like I did that in a
very good way.

It looks the most modern out of
everyone.

I'm kind of nervous because

I'm not in love with it.

eat this up because that back

Zipper, I know they're gonna go
for that.

They love the zippers.

It's definitely a reflection of
me and my style and my aesthetic

And who I am.

It looks very clean and
polished, and I'm hoping that it

At least reads well with the

The trousers are slicked down,
but when she walks, there's a

Little of a kick to it.

I'm ecstatic.

I really don't know if I have

I know it's quite different from
any of the garments in the

It's a design I really love,

And I hope it's a winning look.

I kind of like it.

I see where it's going.

I see what it's about.

I feel like this garment is
saying a lot.

And I feel like that ties in
with my heritage really well.

I, for the first time, I think,
can breathe just a little bit,

Knowing that I really like

Polish flag is red and white,
and I grew up in a very large

Polish family.

And my older brother always told
me to remember that blood is

Thicker than water.

And so this is what I created.

Who would've ever thought
that melissa was gonna go to

Park avenue...

and give us this uptown girl

And to execute it well?

It fits perfectly.

The print is great.

I mean, this is a whole
different girl.

I just think the front--it
looks too much like wings.

I like it a little edgier.

I wish you would've injected a
little bit more of your coolness

Into that somehow.

I think it looks chic and
smart and a little sexy.

It's a dress that I think would
appeal to a lot of girls.

And I like that you tried
something else.

print and your design.

Originally from guyana, which
is located in south america, but

Of indian heritage.

The feeling of the hibiscus
flower is very evident in my

Work, so I figured I'll pick one
color that's very popular in the

Culture and then keep the white
to really make the color pop.

To me, she looks like a
hawaiian airline hostess.

It's not good.

The flower on the bottom, which
we've seen many times, looks

Like a rose.

With the hibiscus together, it
doesn't flow.

I mean, there are so many things
wrong with it.

It's really one of the worst
ones today.

Ven, we know you can do this.

You got to get to the next
thing.

I mean, does no one else tell
you, "hey, ven, by the way, are

You sure you want to do this
again?

The judges have seen this
already five times"?

No one ever mentions it?

I mean, you're a fabric
florist at this point.

Tim, nobody--does no one ever
say, "hint, hint..."

No.

"Don't do this again."

Nobody?

Well, actually, I had a first
dress.

There was just a negative
critique, and I just wanted to

Make a second garment and just
move forward with the time that

I had left.

What I really would like to
see from you is how you

Incorporate the prints into that
fabric manipulation.

What this says to me is that you
didn't know what to do with the

Print.

I think that that print is
very simplistic.

And it also feels like it's
three dresses in one.

Well, ven, I know you have a
major skill set.

Like, you're really, really
good.

But there's such a
disconnection, whether it's the

Print or the three dresses
mashed up together.

I mean, you're giving me a lot
of information in one dress.

And visually, it confuses me.

Dmitry, tell us about your
print and your look.

I was born in belarus, and my
whole family are artists, and

I tried to put all these
emotions and memories and

Feelings together to create this
two-dimensional illusion.

You did what we're looking
for.

So you have design, concept,
execution, wearability--

All of that combined.

I think you stepped out of your
dress comfort zone.

It's really, really well done.

You know, the take-away piece
is this jacket.

This is, like, the showstopper
here, you know.

Everything else could kind of
just go away.

And this is a print challenge.

We can't see the print.

It's covered with the jacket.

I think it's a nice print,
but this entire look, I think,

Is great.

I mean, look at the back.

I mean, that is stunning what
you've done.

I love how you made this
illusion that these pieces are

Just floating.

I love it.

I would buy that.

That is crazy good.

I really, really love how you
took the print challenge a step

Further, and I think it's super
smart.

print and your look.

I was a victim to really
harsh bullying in school, and

I kind of wanted to, like,
encompass these hands coming

Around, and this bird, like,
flying away.

And I wanted to, like, kind
of mesh the two together in

An outfit, and that's how I got
this.

I don't understand this at
all.

I mean, it is not cool.

It is not edgy.

It is not modern.

I mean, it's bizarre.

The whole point of this is
that it's supposed to be

Something personal...

Right.

But the print itself, quite
frankly, is not compelling.

It looks like a sheet of bird
postage stamps.

But is the thought behind what
you were trying to say, you

Know, something great?

Absolutely.

I mean, what I get from this
print is not the flight or the

Freedom, but on the contrary,
it's...

It's the struggle.

It's a sadness and the...

Yeah.

But is that what we want to
buy and wear, is a struggle?

No, but I mean, this is
my her--this is my heritage.

You know what I'm saying?

And that was the most
influential part of that

Heritage, so I wanted to portray
that part of that.

Unfortunately, it doesn't
read in the garment, and when it

Walked down the runway, I kept
thinking like, "is it old?

Is it young?

Where would you buy it?

Is it t.j.maxx?"
I can't tell, but most of all,

It's just--it's sort of, like,
non-fashion.

It just sort of--in every way.

Okay.

I wanted a print that kind of
read tribal-esque.

And then I chose red, white, and
blue because I'm american, which

Is a little literal, and black
as well, because I'm black and--

It's hard to make a gigantic
print for pants and make them

Work, and I think you succeeded.

Really? Oh, my god.

I mean, and the fit of these
pants is very good.

It's great.

When it walked down, I was like,
"wow," and then I was surprised

With the draped back.

I think it's young.

It's cool.

It's chic.

Well, I think this is one of
the most successful garments up

I think the pants are cut
beautifully.

It's very elegant.

With that print, if it wasn't
right, it would have looked like

For my fabric, me and my
mother had designed this ladybug

Print.

It's, like, our family mascot.

So I think it's really pretty.

I think it's okay.

And it's just a very simple
dress, and I feel like right now

You guys have to really show
what you've got.

Like I always say, wow us.

Show us something different.

Like, I think it's perfectly
fine...

But fine--you're not gonna win
a challenge with a fine dress.

Until you took out that
piece...

Right.

You couldn't see how
beautiful the print was.

And I also don't really love
the--the silhouette.

I think it's a little, like,
prom dress.

It's very expected, and it is
prom dress-y, i--

But I do think the print is
beautiful.

disappointing execution that

I have yet to see from you.

So, when I saw it, I was like,
"what happened?"

I mean...

I was very scrambled.

You can tell.

It being, you know, the print
challenge, I would've really

Embraced that and not put that
organza over it.

I think it gets a little messy.

I think it's a little...

Overdesigned.

Would I expect more from you?

designers that we did like.

Melissa did a good job today.

It was nice to see a real bright
color from her.

It was nice to see something
different.

Polished, colorful.

Yeah, this was a real
transformation for her.

It was nice to see her stretch
herself as a designer.

But, really, the two people
who stood out the most today

Were dmitry and sonjia.

For me, today, dmitry gave us
this beautifully tailored

Jacket.

But I like that he thought about
using the print in a different

Way with the peek-a-boo effect,
and I think it was beautifully

Crafted.

He clearly is very
architectural, clearly does

Phenomenal tailoring.

But this being the print
challenge, I felt like he kind

Of hid it.

I mean, I feel the opposite
to you.

I really thought that the
jacket was amazing.

You would think that that
suit was probably $1,500.

Are you kidding? For sure.

Absolutely.

Yes.

Let's talk about sonjia.

Those pants were spot-on, and
she made those pants look

Expensive.

The jersey top was great.

Both garments were perfect.

Yep.

When the girl walks in the
back with that drape...

See, that's the thing about
sonjia is, from head toe, it's

Pretty impeccable.

Let's talk about the
designers that we didn't like so

Much.

Christopher--he wasn't good, and
he wasn't bad.

Christopher realized he had a
bad print.

He tried to hide it.

It wasn't great.

I think he was kind of
clever.

Right, exactly.

I think he kind of scrambled,
but he made it happen.

Yeah.

I don't like the design of
gunnar's, and I don't like the

Design of ven's.

I don't like either one.

I want to send them both
home.

You know, at least I look at
the proportion of ven's dress.

At least I know that he can get
the garment finished, polished,

Done.

So I'm curious to see what it
could be.

If it's another flower, I'll
scream.

He shouldn't be doing the
same design over and over again.

And maybe tim has told him.

Yeah, but we've told him.

I think gunnar is more
successful in his pattern over

Ven.

The details on gunnar, for
me, k*lled it.

Look at the proportion of it
too.

The dress isn't long enough to
be chic or short enough to be

Youthful.

But there's a lot of emotion,
anger, all of that, and I think

That he couldn't get past that.

No. It was just in bad taste,
I think.
