Tonight I'm very excited to
share with you some of

my personal and unedited Insider
views

on Season 9 of Project Runway.

You know that I can't help
myself, I'm a truth-teller.

I'm going to share my raw
opinions that

includes what I loved and
appreciated about the show,

as well as my disappointments
and some frustrations.

I will also reveal some of
Project Runway's

best kept behind the scenes
secrets.

After nine seasons, it's

time to pull back the veil a
little

bit and let our loyal fans

see how we do things around
here.

This is Project Runway behind
the scenes.

Well, another season of

Project Runway has drawn to an
end,

and we've crowned our ninth
winner.

Congratulations, you're the
winner of Project Runaway.

Oh my god.

[APPLAUSE].

I give my heartfelt
congratulations

to Anya for securing that win.

It was no small feat.

I'm going to share with you,

had it been up to me Anya
wouldn't have

made it past the audition
process.

It shows what I know and what I
don't know.

I'm horrified.

What are you horrified by,
Tim?

You are handicapped in a
manner of

speaking by not having

the sewing skills to execute the
work.

She might be really good.

What I love about Project
Runway for

me personally is my relationship
with the designers,

I have such tremendous respect
for them.

As many of you may know,

I spent 29 years as a teacher.

For me, the Project Runway
workroom

is an extension of the classroom
for me.

I forget about the cameras
altogether.

For me, it's that one on

one moment that I have with the
designers,

and they keep me up all night

worrying about whether they're
going to finish.

I get to a point where I don't

even care who wins or loses,

it's more about just finish your
work everybody.

We certainly had a lot of that
this season.

Anya, what's going on?

It's going over her head.

Get her into that right now.

In ten minutes,

you and your models and I are
going down to the runway

and one of you is still in the
sewing room. Anya?

I know. I know. I know. I
know.

I'm calling zone. Let's go,

go, go right now.

And I have to also tell you, I'm
very,

very careful to only talk to

the designers about things that
they can change.

If they can't change it,

then why bother wasting time
talking about it?

And owing to the fact that I do
feel so close to them,

it's very hard and very
emotional

for me when someone does have to
go.

I want to share with you some of
the moments that

are nearest and dearest to me.
Let's have a look.

We want you to succeed.

We do the best we can.

We do the best we can.

I feel like am not even a
designer

and I'm just like really

disappointed. No, you're gonna
be fine.

I feel pretty confident about
this. Okay.

But you're always telling

me you feel confident.
[LAUGHTER]

I believe you're feeling
confident and then I

see it on the runway and I
think, Oh my God.

Am I allowed to ask you what
double

deem is like bra size?

What do I know about it?

I just know is a bra size.

I don't have any personal

experience with all of our team.

We can't want you to

succeed more than you do
[OVERLAPPING].

If your heart and soul aren't
here,

then it's not going to work for
you.

now where there just isn't time.

and I want the judges that have
the most difficult time

possible determining who the
winner is.

Often reveal anything.

Well, it's always an
adjustment for me when

the season is over and I'm

not what the designers every
day.

They are sort of like my kids in
a manner of speaking,

though I could be there
grandfather,

every season has its own
identity

and its own place in my heart,

frankly, and Season 9 is no
difference.

In fact, it's one of my favorite
seasons and

Project Runway history and

I'm going to share with you why.

For one thing, the diversity and
the aesthetic of

the designers was equal to

the diversity of the
personalities.

There's some seasons when we
have over-the-top design

and humdrum personalities or the
inverse.

Another thought is that at least
for me,

there wasn't a villain this
season.

I mean, there were a few people
who

were a little difficult to take,

but we really didn't have a
plotting, crafting villain.

A moment that I'll never get
over was when the judges had

the wisdom and the prudence to

send all [LAUGHTER] of four
finalists to fashion week.

Thank you judges.

But what I love most about
Season 9

is the fact that it was a season
of firsts.

Let's take a look.

For the first time ever in
Project Runway.

Your fashion show will take
place outside

in front of a live audience and
the press.

It hasn't been done on this
show before.

To be a part of the first public
runway,

it makes me completely
speechless.

[APPLAUSE] Say you're
designing for me.

I mean, never in the history
of Project Runway has

this challenge of dressing Nina
ever happened.

We're going to be the first.

Designers.

In the history of Project
Runway.

I had never needed to

deliver these lines and the
sewing room,

you'll have a ton of work to do.

I'm really alarmed, honestly,

I'm sweating through my suits.

You can choose anyone that
has been eliminated.

To come back and be on

your team and they also will be
in the competition again?

[APPLAUSE] Welcome Josh back
to the competition.

I lost my money him. You lost
your money?

Oh Anya. Yeah.

So another Project Runway
first. It never happened.

I would be in the first.
[inaudible] [LAUGHTER]

Today we are having our first
ever [inaudible] right here

on the runway ♪♪.

Finally, this is the first
time in

Project Runway history
[LAUGHTER].

For the first time ever,

I have created what I'm calling
the Tim Gunn awards.

These are awards for the
designers

and all of them have been very
well earned.

We'll show you who won what as
the night progresses.

Let's take a look at the first
award.

♪♪ The first award goes to
Kimberly.

[APPLAUSE] Come forward
Kimberly.

Do you have any idea what you're
winning this award for?

I don't know, best pants?

[LAUGHTER]

That could have been.

Kimberly, your award is for most

likely to be running out of

the workroom at the last minute.

[LAUGHTER] How about that
[APPLAUSE]. Let's have a look.

♪♪ Let's go,

off the mood run.

We are leaving for the runway.
Kimberly.

I'm putting it on so that she
can wear it.

You've got a go.

[LAUGHTER]

Kimberly you're the last,
there you go.

[APPLAUSE] It's a fashion
show too.

Congratulations Kimberly,

no one does a workroom run like
you.

[LAUGHTER] Thank you too.

I accept this award.

Anthony William, the next
award is for you. [APPLAUSE].

Don't be, it's a lovely

Your award is for the designer
who was

most cheated out of a win.

Do you know what it was for?

About a bad stage.

[LAUGHTER].

I have to tell you I'm all
over

the country and all people want
to talk about.

Everybody loved it.

of

our runway secrets. Later.

What do you think about
Oliver,

he didn't like boobs?

I think that is ridiculous.

[LAUGHTER].

Message to Oliver, we need
boobs.

♪♪ Every season we

have our successes and our
failures when it comes to

how the designers perform and
given challenges.

There are times when the
designers' surprises

in a wonderful and thrilling
way.

There are times when they
surprise us in

what were you thinking way?

There were two challenges that
stood

out as being spectacular,

at least to me.

The first was the pet store
challenge.

[BACKGROUND] I loved the
unconventional

materials challenges.

We took the designers to a pet
store

to shop for their materials.

It was raucous, wild,

and we had some really thrilling
outcomes.

♪♪ Then the bird challenge,

I loved our birds.

Their personalities were even
bigger [BACKGROUND] and

moreover the top than the
designers' personalities.

[LAUGHTER] What was really
thrilling about

it was not knowing where

the designers were going to take
it.

♪♪

[LAUGHTER] For the wow,

that really went wrong
challenges.

The sheepdogs are mailed walk.

♪♪ Boy,

those guys were such troopers
wearing

those horrible, hideous clothes.

We wanted the designers to get a
kind of

seventies hippie vibe but
instead,

it was just playing dull
doldrums.

Then the stilts challenge.

I was so excited about this.

It's the first time in Project
Runway history that

we've had an outdoor challenge
for the public.

We're always doing things under

cover of darkness but in this
case,

we were out full and bold.

But we had a big hot mess.

I thought that this was

a great opportunity for the
designers to

design for what's quite
literally an elongated figure,

but the challenge has turned out
to be very costly,

freaky, and uber tall.

Now I'm going to let you in on
one of

our runway secrets, the stilts
challenge.

This was our outdoor runway for
Episode 3.

Raphael and Josh Christianson

had already been eliminated.

Since we were in public and
there was press there,

we had to put them in the
audience.

[NOISE] You can see them sitting
on

the end of the rest of the
designers.

We also had the two of them pair
up and make

a garment descend down the
outdoor runway.

Just to what looked like
everyone was still in the game.

I have to be honest,

their look was one of the

worst in Project Runway history.

I'm not sure if they were making
a joke or not.

When I went to check in on them

like I do with the other
designers,

they were watching television.

It was clear to me at that point
that

the first two designers out were

the first two designers who
should have gone out.

♪♪ Now,

I want to talk about the biggest
fad that

baffled me on Season 9.

The fabric dying fad,

there was more dying of fabric
on

this season of the show than

the history of Project Runway.

Let's take a look. Now in the
designer's lounge,

we have dyes and dying bins.

♪♪

I can dye and make this all
work for him.

Could you dye this?

I haven't dyed much before,

now everything has to change.

I have not done any tie-dye
and since about 1972.

♪♪.

That's not good. I'm
tie-dying this.

I dyed this. It's like a
marine blue.

It seems like there's a lot of
purple going on.

I dyed everything like three
times

so far and I've got a dye it
again.

So I actually got the tank
and tie-dye that as well.

So I just dyed it as I loved it.

I think it looks like he cut
himself shaving.

[LAUGHTER]

It's a little Sweeney Todd,
tie-dye.

♪♪ I'm going to dye these.

At this moment I'm dying the dog
pads.

What is this?

This is a ladder way pad.

[LAUGHTER] As you may have
noticed,

we had plastic drop cloths
everywhere to protect

the floors and I kept slipping.

Now it's time for another award.

♪♪

Hertz, the next award goes to
you.

Your award is for

the most likely designer to ask

the most questions about a
challenge.

[APPLAUSE]

I don't know about that.

Let's take a look at this
Hertz. Are there any questions?

Your response to like prints
and scale.

Are we talking about the run?

The winners are the captains

or the losers are the captains?

I have a feeling

that we were talking modern and
contemporary.

When will we get the
measurements?

You are here now.
Okay good.

Remember anything Tim saying
not to

use or to use something about
fabric?

Tim what did you just say.

That was my quandary.

Come on, thank you. [APPLAUSE]

Next award goes to Anya.

[APPLAUSE]

Anya, you are the hands-down
winner

of the make it work award.

Thank you.
I have to say challenge after
challenge,

you never cease to amaze me with

how you just pull it out of your
house.

I miss myself. [LAUGHTER].

All the way to the very end.

There were so many times and I
thought it's not going to

happen and you made it work
constantly.

Thank you.

This award is for you.

I'm so honored. Thank you
very much.

[APPLAUSE]

We're going to take a look.

How did you learn how to sow?

Actually when I applied for
this.

You just learned how to sow.

All right baffled,

I am telling you.

You didn't know how to sow
four months ago.

Let me see that.

I think we should put her to
the test.

You haven't made attempts
before either.

It's the first one like this.

Looks very good.

She showed me this fabric.
This is a risk.

Do we have a plan B.

Could you dye this?

I haven't dyed very much
before.

Now everything has to change.

♪♪

I love the color that it
turned out to

be. I lost my money.

You can use Muslim.

They wanted to see something
dynamic and fashion-forward.

It's not any of those things.

Anya, you are the winner of
this challenge.

There is that possibility
that they're going to say,

do we want to see the remaining
seven looks?

I don't know.

It so critiques I've had. I
don't know what to do.

It's like I don't have any
time to start over.

I'm not the type to just give
up,

so I have to stay strong.

[OVERLAPPING] I knew it.

[NOISE] Anya.

[NOISE] Ooh my God.

[LAUGHTER] Yeah.

the finalists from being

figured out by the fans on the
press?

As much as I loved the season of
Project Runway.

I have one very big pet peeve,

and later, you know what you all

don't know, or maybe you do
know.

[NOISE] Sorry ♪♪.

♪♪ Welcome back everyone.

As much as I love the season of
Project Runway.

I have one very big pet peeve,
glue g*ns.

I have never seen so much glue
gunning in my entire life,

they were everywhere doing
everything.

Glue g*ns are meant for
embellishments.

They're meant to touch things
up.

They are not meant to construct
garments.

Let's take a look at just how
much of this went on.

I loved all those little
pieces.

You know, you can always tell
when

designers do that means so much
work.

I guess most people would
probably think it's

just thrown on there, and glued
together.

I did not hand sew any of
that,

it's all with the hot glue g*n
[LAUGHTER].

Scrap what I said before
[LAUGHTER].

♪♪ You guys, we're going
diets,

people use a lot of this glue.

It's pretty heavy-duty.

♪♪ I've literally gluing
while she's wearing it.

This is madness.

♪♪ Gluing to me is like
cheating, is not sewing.

If you go to a store, and you
buy a dress that's glued,

would you buy it? No.

♪♪ You have glue?

Yeah, sure everything I have
is yours, Oliver.

Oh, all right [BACKGROUND].

♪♪ You've actually glued the
top to your model?

♪♪ Is that glue?

Yikes ♪♪.

Next season, I hope to create a
no glue g*n at all rule,

or a rule that if

the designers have used it,
we'll take it away.

Also, we had entirely too

much sewing a model into a
garment this season,

the designers were so pressed
for

time that they couldn't manage
zippers,

or other forms of closure.

That's going to go away too.

Anyway, we should change the
subject

before my blood starts to boil.

Now, I'm often asked how we keep
the winner,

and the finalists from being

figured out by the fans on the
press.

I won't go into all of our
little secrets on that,

but I will say that we were

very careful throughout
sh**ting,

and while airing about keeping
everyone tight-lipped.

But when it comes to making the
final collections,

It's not that easy.

We are much more vulnerable,

and out in the open.

How do we keep the secret alive?

Well, we have everyone

who's still standing in the
competition

on the show during Fashion Week,
creates a collection.

We call them decoys.

These eliminated designers get

the same resources as the ones
still competing,

but they are no longer in the
competition,

and they are not vying for the
prize package.

Rather, they create collections
so

that no one knows who's in, and
who's out.

This season we have Laura, Bard,
Oliver,

Anthony Ryan, and Bryce all
create collections.

Sometimes the decoys surprises
with great collections.

Bryce's collection was

his most ambitious undertaking
so far.

He really pushed the envelope of

innovation and experimentation
[NOISE],

and I'm exceedingly proud of
him.

Bard is a classic American
designer,

and that's precisely what his
collections said.

It was beautifully designed

, and beautifully constructed.

My question is, how relevant is
it to 2011, 2012?

I feel very proud of what Oliver
achieved.

He was smart to focus on his
strengths,

which happened to be superbly

crafted tailoring technique.

♪♪ His collection was fantastic.

♪♪ Anthony Ryan's collection was
true to its DNA.

It was youthful, and
high-spirited

with just a touch of whimsy. It
was fun.

Laura's collection was
magnificent.

She thoroughly disarmed me with
her neutral palette,

with her sleek silhouettes,

and with her greatly heightened
level of sophistication.

Frankly, I was plowed.

Having the designers create
collections is an expensive,

and very involved effort.

But so far doing this has helped
us keep

the surprise alive for our
viewers.

It's also been good for the
designers.

Now, it's time for another Tim
Gunn Award.

♪♪ Laura, you are

the winner of the best decoys
collection for season 9.

Yes [APPLAUSE].
Thank you so much that's a
really.

I think that I have to say,

I even showed your collection to
Nina,

your toughest critic, and she
loved it.

That's amazing.

Yeah, so congratulations.

My next award goes to two
designers,

♪♪ Victor, and Oliver.

[NOISE] Oh my God [LAUGHTER]
[APPLAUSE].

But wait a minute,

It's the Time Management award.

Oh [NOISE] [LAUGHTER].

Victor, you receive this
award for excellence

in time management [APPLAUSE].

Oliver, you receive this award

for not even having

the remotest concept of what
time management is.

[LAUGHTER] Oh that's so
touching.

There was never a dark in the
world.

I don't know what this is
[LAUGHTER].

Let's take a look, gentlemen.
Oliver.

Yes.
Two minutes, and I'm serious.

Olive, he is a turtle.

He takes a long time to do
anything.

Have you started on the pant?

Oliver's pants still aren't
done.

He may just k*ll us all.

I think Oliver is doing okay.

If he gets upset when people
tell him

to go faster [LAUGHTER].

You aren't quite finished,

you are running out of time.

Just waiting for the day when

he sends his model down their
own way,

and everything completely falls
off the Fair.

[NOISE] 15 minutes everybody.

♪♪ Versus old Victor ever
needs to shop.

You're very organized, so good.

♪♪ My looks are all finished,
they're complete,

and it seems like the other
designers

are still struggling.

That puts me are ready in a
lead.

Fabulous, and that's it.

You have time management
issues.

You are going slow yesterday.

I say, you going to go, go.

Does your skirt lined?
Lined, yeah.

♪♪ Oliver.

I really don't feel like I
have some management issue.

It's going to go there naked.

[LAUGHTER] Oliver, no more
sewing,

stop, stop, stop, stop.

You know what? I think I have
enough.

I'm going to make me a frank up

challenge so far.

Good.
Excellent. I've been talking

about how I feel about this
season.

Now what I want to know is how
you're feeling about it.

What was your favorite and least

favorite part of being on
Project Runway?

Me?

Anya. [LAUGHTER].

I have lots of favorites.

But I think especially being

buckled together reminds me how
much I

really enjoyed getting to know
all

of the other designers

and the friendships that we
formed.

I feel like I'm proud to say
that I think our season

had a really great sense of
camaraderie.

You do?

Versus other seasons. I mean,

I know as an outsider in the
other seasons.

I totally agree. I totally
agree.

I wish the viewers got to see
more of who we are

behind the scenes and how we
interact

with each other because we had a
great time.

Getting to know everybody is
so wonderful.

I made so many friends from
here.

Overall I think it was just an
amazing experience

just because I found who I was
as a designer.

I really found things that I

never thought I would ever find
on my own.

I'm thrilled to hear you say
that.

Yeah.

My favorite is getting to
work with

probably some of

the most talented people in the
industry.

Not just the designers sitting
here,

but yourself and Heidi, and
Michael and Nina.

I would never get that any other
place.

It was the biggest opportunity
for me that's

ever come along to actually come
on that show.

Well, my favorite part was

just all this freedom to

create our own designs.

Why are you all laughing?
[LAUGHTER] [OVERLAPPING].

We like it your way.

I thought that I learned a
lot from other people.

My least favorite bit with
probably just.

Deadlines. [LAUGHTER].

Yeah, yeah, yeah. That and
big people.

[OVERLAPPING].

Okay, now leave him alone.

My least favorite I think is

when things didn't go so well.

There was sometimes a lot of
drama.

Sometimes?

Well yeah. [LAUGHTER]

I would have to say the same.

The drama that went on,

that is the only point I could
do without.

All right.

Being thrown into the
workroom experience,

I enjoyed the most working with
the other designers.

It really carries you forward
realizing

that sometimes we were working
for 16, 18 hours a day.

Did your work?

I know and now that I'm at
home,

it's like the half-hour I'm into

my working and it's like, "I'm
going to take a nap".

[LAUGHTER] [OVERLAPPING] I think
of it,

I used to do it but without the
other people around,

it really pushes you
[OVERLAPPING],

and knowing that you can do it,

we can do it.

For me especially having not
designed for years.

Because literally on the
Sleepwear Challenge,

I was this close to walking up
to

the producer and saying, I want
to go home.

You mean, the first challenge
that you won?

The very first challenge.

I thought I don't want to be
here.

I want to get out of here.

Somebody kept me from doing
that.

I just cut my underwear up and
ironed it

[LAUGHTER] by the time I got
through that,

that feeling of fear had passed
and that

was the last time I was fearful
of being on the show.

The least favorite was

being eliminated. I think
[LAUGHTER] for everyone.

I'd have to echo Bert's
sentiments.

My least favorite was being
eliminated right

before Lincoln Center. What is
this?

All right. Now,

it's time to hear what the
people who really count think.

We sent Zanna Roberts Rassi

out on the street to find out.

What?

Have you watched this season
of Project Runway?

No.

Good start. [LAUGHTER].

Steve, are you a fan of
Project Runway?

Am a super fan of Project
Runway.

What do you love most about
Project Runway?

Everybody loves Project
Runway.

I love it. I think it's
really good.

The designs are really
innovative.

I just think that the show is
terrific.

I like to watch the
frustration of the artist.

I like to see them go from
nothing,

get stressed out, cry,

fight and then come up with

something that they're proud of
at the end.

I always love the squabbles
they have about themselves.

I like seeing what they

start with all the scraps

and seeing what they come up
with.

I do you like the dramas of

those designers and I also like
their creativity as well.

Who's your favorite designer
from this season?

Anya, totally Anya.
Anya.

Anya.

Why?

Because I like her, she's
pretty.

Well, I've liked Bert, I like
Becky.

Anya. Yes, Anya is my
favorite girl.

Why?

Because of her hair of
course, [LAUGHTER].

Olivier Green.

Olivier Green, why?

I don't know, I just like his
weird accent

and his looking and also his
design as well.

He's a good designer, right?
[OVERLAPPING]

Anya, I thought she was
great.

I loved the fact that she didn't
really

know how to saw very much, to
begin with.

What do you think about the
fact that she only learned

to saw four months ago?

I think that is awesome.

I think that it

has the potential to give a
really

fresh perspective to design.

Because she's not reading
through

years of the way that she

was taught or what she learned
in school.

What do you think about
Oliver?

He obviously had an issue with
girls with figures.

Remember the whole thing and he
didn't like boobs.

I just think that's
ridiculous.

[LAUGHTER] Now, I'm not even a
busty girl.

I'm actually what he would like.

I'm like an eight or nine.

Most girls have boobs envy.

We're either getting breast
implants, wearing boobs.

What's that the new thing?

Little chicken cutlets are in
there.

We need boobs. We need boobs.

Message to Olivier, "We need
boobs."

[LAUGHTER].

If you were getting married,

which designer would make your
wedding dress?

I'd like to see what Anya
has.

I would definitely want to see
what she has. [LAUGHTER]

Anya's first commission for
her wedding dress,

[LAUGHTER].

Anyone else you like in the
show?

No. [LAUGHTER]

He definitely has a passion

be a good educator.

To connect with the students,

to offer them advice.

I love him, he's just funny.

He is so good with the
designers.

In the minuscule hours

the day when they're not
designing,

what do you do in the apartment?

There is no booze

at all whatsoever.

We wish we could have had

But I have to say, I love
with the viewers,

have to say I always do.

I get a lot of comments on

the street as I'm sure all of
you do too.

It's fun to hear their
perception and

here how they spend

things and to hear how wrong
they can be about things.

I'm always correcting
mythologies.

Do you believe that the viewers
at home have

a full enough understanding of
how hard you

work and how difficult and

demanding is that the processes?

No.
Because as the one who's with
you day in and day out,

I marvel at you and what you're
able

to achieve because on the one
hand,

as you move forward in the
process,

yes, it's thrilling, it's
wonderful.

I'm still here. On the other
hand,

you're physically spent,

emotionally spent, creatively
spent.

It's harder the longer you're
on,

it's really difficult and
demanding.

A lot of people realize what
goes into making a garment,

the time that goes into making a
garment. Yeah.

I don't think they realized
what they see in terms of

the time that you give us for

the day is what we actually
have.

It's real.

People really think we

have like the week it takes
between them.

[LAUGHTER] I'm like no,

what you see is what you get.

We have like 20 hour days that
we're doing it,

you just see an hour of put on
TV.

That's so bad.

Also the creativity part of
it.

After being on those surfaces
such a long period of time,

you becomes a stale but just
like dead, almost.

Like a walk in the park,

Central Park or going

out to dinner with friends would
tell me really great.

That that's what the show's
about.

They don't realize there's no
break from it.

I guess it's easy just to sit
there in

their comfy and watching TV and
just judge,

and say things that you don't
really know

what's happening behind all of
this being put together.

Well, I always want to say to

people who are critical and

judgmental in that capacity, you
try it.

You try, step into the designer
shoes for

just two days and

see if you're not ready for a
mental hospital.

When I first saw you on TV,

I was very intrigued and
mesmerized.

I thought, I don't think I'll
ever

get to meet a person like you.

You are definitely one of

the most inspiring man I've ever
met in my entire life.

You are one of the very rare,
genuine,

pure and loyal people in the
world and I am

so honored to have had the
chance to know you.

I can only aspire to be half

of the man that you are in a
whole myself

with so much grace and

only so many people can touch
lives like you do.

You have so much compssion
towards other people.

You have so much love for what
do you do and-

You have continually been

a wonderful mentor and

helped me become the designer I
am.

You are the grounded
professor that is

honest and faithful and truthful
to all your students.

I couldn't have possibly had
the experience that I had

without you and all

of the insights that you shared
with me.

You were there for me at points
when

I didn't know what the hell I
was going to do.

But you always were able to

get through to me and

I always knew that I could trust
you.

I just want to take this
opportunity to say thank

you for all of your help,

advice, and love this season.

I truly believe that it's going
to make

me a great designer in the
