[male narrator] Previously on "The Real World.."

♪ Television the drug of a nation ♪

[Tami] "Studs" is a TV game show

where they take three girls and two guys

and the two guys go out with the same three girls.

I don't know why anybody in the world

would wanna be on that show.

[Tami] I think I'm gonna win.

[Dominic] This is the true story..

♪ True story ♪

[Tami] Of seven strangers..

[Jon] Picked to live in a house..

[Beth] And have their lives taped..

[Aaron] To find out what happens..

[Irene] When people stop being polite..

[David] And start getting real..

[male narrator] "The Real World," California.

Tami, I see she's very ambitious, I think.

Um, she expects a lot to happen.

The guy that I'm seeing from "Studs," his name is Kenya.

We're not supposed to be seeing each other

but we, we are, we're cheating.

They had agreed that they were gonna choose

one another so, they had that part worked out.

So it was just all up to Kenya answering the right questions.

[Tami] I really like Kenya

so if they took "Studs" away, I would probably still see him

but, the $ that I'm gonna get from winning

is gonna be nice.

Right next to me is -year-old health care worker, Tami Akbar!

We're just gonna act like it's one big surprise

that we didn't know we were gonna pick each other

and then we're gonna cash our checks

and I'm gonna make him spend his on me

and then I'm gonna spend mine on me as well.

"My motor was running, his engine was humming

and our bodies were grinding gears."

- Probably Tami. - Yeah.

- There you go! - Were there any sparks?

Yeah. He's a good kisser.

What makes him such a great kisser?

Because it's not too wet, and it's..

just enough tongue, just enough lip.

Just the right percentages!

Kenya, according to these three ladies

who's more likely to shave a woman's name into his hair?

Ah, boy, Amon. Amon

- Amon. - There you go.

According to these three ladies, who's most likely to bake

'a woman a batch of brownies?'

'You or Kenya?'

- Kenya. - Ladies?

I think that's Tami.

- No. - D'oh!

I did think I could fix the show.

I thought if I just, like, hung out with Kenya

you know, he would pick me

I would pick him and we would win.

I forgot about the hearts.

Kenya, you're trailing by one. So, we're gonna start with you.

Tell me who you wanna go out with again.

If she picks you and he doesn't match up

you get to go and we pay for it!

- Tami. - Ooh, alright.

Quick, Tami, Tami what's it gonna be?

Kenya, alright!

You picked Amon, you are going to the islands to lounge.

If not, these two are gonna go to Philly and Bermuda.

- What's it gonna be? - They're not going.

Loungers. Congratulations, go give her a kiss!

There you go! Thanks for..

That other girl chose Amon and you chose Kenya

so, that way neither one of you gets to go on your trip?

No, she gets to go because Amon had eight hearts

and Kenya only had seven.

- Oh, so they do get to go? - They get to go.

I was only really hanging with Kenya

because I wanted to win the $.

[indistinct chatter]

Oh, man, we now going to Philly into the Bahamas.

The last conversation Kenya and I had

he stated that I didn't really call him that much

and I told him that if he was going to wait for me

to call him, he'd probably be waiting a very long time

and I haven't talked to him since, so, it's over.

- He's cute. - Who?

- Aaron. - For a white boy.

I'm gonna teach your a*s a lesson

you lily white Orange County son of a b*tch.

[female #] This senior year, Aaron was our student body president.

He was president of the national honor society.

This year, he is a senior, graduating from UCLA

with a degree in business and plans to be a CPA.

Besides all of those wonderful things

he loves to surf.

And I'd like to introduce Aaron Bailey.

[Aaron] You've all strived valiantly

'and risked a tremendous amount'

of time and effort to reach the triumph of high achievement

that you're being recognized for this evening.

Orange county is a great place to grow up.

Yeah, it's like some weird George Orwellian-type place.

It's like Hitler, basically with sunshine.

I'm just a writer working in a bar.

I do a column for a music paper called Radioactive.

[Aaron] I think Teddy Roosevelt best summarized this notion

when he said "It's not the critic who counts."

- You don't like Orange County? - No, it's got no character.

So, what did they build the place

last week or something?

When it comes right down to it

you're the only one that has to live with yourself

and the repercussions of your actions.

[audience applauding]

Good shot for a communist.

They're totally opposite, personality and everything else.

Aaron was fascinated with Dominic the very first day.

- Oh, you know who we left out? - Who?

The white guy who wants to be a black guy.

I'm convinced that Aaron is secretly

in love with Dominic. I'm convinced.

[Aaron] It's made me less conservative about certain things

because I've been able to understand from someone

who's really intelligent about the other side of the coin.

[Dominic] Aaron learns a lot from text books

where, I like to think I learned a lot

from going through the experiences.

Do you believe in social security?

What do you mean, do I believe in social security?

Do you believe in social security?

You're setting me up for something here, I'm sure.

- I am, of course. - Okay, I'll play along, go on.

Do you believe in social security?

Yes, I do. Knock knock.

Why do you believe in social security?

Yeah, I believe in a form of welfare, yes.

- Why? - To help the less fortunate.

Social security helps the less fortunate?

Aaron, don't-don't.

You really are just setting me up here.

Go ahead, you learned some new stats today

out the little book of yours

Aaryan?

Aryan? He doesn't like that.

I just call him "The Aryan nation."

'Cause he has, at times, extreme

single-minded

sometimes, I think, narrow-minded political beliefs.

Aaron, please tell me what did you learn today?

What did you learn today in your..

...ultra-white, conservative college?

He's definitely a Republican.

- Clinton.. - Jesus!

He might be the Anti-Christ, I don't know.

From the beginning, Dominic and I really got along well.

I guess there is that little bonding thing going.

We have fun together.

Are you making Kool-Aid?

- Seriously. - 'No.'

God.

[Dominic] Is it something with sugar?

- Shut up. - You're terrible.

If someone said that

if you cut him off from sugar right now

he'd be sick for a week.

And I think he may be somewhat addicted to it.

We could send him to "Sugar's anonymous".

[Aaron] 'Look at that cowboy sippin' on that thing'

'of Hawaiian punch, watchin' Billy Ray Cyrus.'

[laughter]

They do seem to really start to be

getting to be good friends.

And, uh, I guess that's good but, at times

they leave a lot of other people out, I think.

You want to take a cab to Moose McGillycuddy's?

How much would it cost us to get to Moose McGillycuddy's

in the marina?

Ten dollars.

Is that the hot-spot tonight?

Moose McGillycuddy's.

'It's dollar-drink night, tonight.'

It's dollar-drink night?

- 'Yeah.' - Tonight?

- 'Ah-ha.' - Where is that place?

- What? - Where is that place?

- 'Where is what?' - Where you going?

I thought you were driving us there.

'Aw, you've gotta be kidding me.'

- What's the name of the place? - Moose McGillycuddy's.

- Oh, Moose! M-O-S-S-E. - 'Yeah.'

Well, it's got two "O's" but..

- One "S?" - 'Yeah.'

[laughs]

Moose, M-O-S-E.

M-O-O-S-E.

[instrumental music]

[all] Ohh!

Dominic was out cold, practically.

He was totally smashed out of his mind.

Oh, God, Beth, what are you looking for?

Well, I thought Beth was drunk because she kept running back

into Dominic's room looking under the sheets and stuff.

[Aaron] 'She's gonna show it to Tami now.'

Come here.

[Beth] And I was just joking around

you know, showing Tami his cute little boxer shorts.

Aaron and I were, like, "What is she doin'?"

Dominic, I never realized

how much hair you had on your chest.

- Oh right - Beth, Beth!

Very sexy.

Interesting Beth.

Out of the way, I mean I'm in the middle of a--

I am not horny!

Jon thought that I was a little horn-dog

because I was looking at his boxer shorts. Come on!

You were looking all in Dom's underwear

I just saw you look under there.

No, I was looking at his underwear.

I thought it was cute.

She's checking out his package.

I was not!

♪ What a wicked game you play ♪

Do you play, uh, baseball at all?

I play baseball, yeah.

I'm going to these try-outs tomorrow

for a softball team for a TV show

and it takes place in the s.

"A league of their own?" TV version?

- Yeah. - Great.

There you go, you're quick.

So, I was gonna ask you what your, what your advice would be.

The words "Drama queen" did not come from my lips.

Is it a good description?

I think if the shoe fits..

I was really excited.

I thought that it was just gonna be softball

and I noticed nobody else has a softball.

I've never hit a hard ball before.

And I thought I did pretty good.

But there was this group of girls

that play on this baseball team. Hard core.

sh**t it now!

That sent me back to the B team.

So if any of the girls happen to..

...die off or something, maybe they'll give me a call.

You know, it was a particularly giddy week, this week.

Ah, I don't think we hurt anyone's feelings.

We're just kidding around, sometimes.

Aaron and Dominic have become

a little clique here in the house.

Joking around as far as Jon and I are concerned.

I ask him about it and I say

"Well, why-why were you laughing about that?"

"Oh, nothing, nothing, we were just

talking about something else."

So it's kinda like their little inside joke

so their little lingo that they don't want to share with me.

Alright, bye.

Sshh, here she is.

- I don't believe this. - What?

- Now, what do I do? - Oh..

- Oh, quick, please-- - What happened, Beth?

Okay, let's blow this way out of proportion now.

No, no, this is very serious.

- What? - 'Cause I'm gonna get..

Remember I told you my friend is coming to visit me?

- Some other guy is coming too. - No, wait.

"Oh, my God.

I'm gonna have to do two of them in one weekend!"

Do you invent these problems?

[Dominic laughing]

I cannot have two visitors on the same weekend.

- Why? - Because..

You've never had sex with two men in one weekend?

Shut up, I'm not having sex with any of them.

- That's, that's not even-- - Do they know that?

I bet they won't come if they know that.

[instrumental music]

It's funny sometimes how she makes a big deal out of nothing.

All my friends say that I'm a drama queen.

Tuesday night, she was more or less dying

on the floor from headaches.

We thought the brain tumor was gonna explode.

Beth is, "CPR, what do we need to do?"

You know, "Call an ambulance.."

You know, all this stuff.

[Dominic] Just don't decompose on us.

I just gotta go to bed.

[phone rings]

- 'Is, is Beth in bed?' - I think so, yeah.

[Aaron] 'I believe she's in bed, Can I take a message?'

- 'Is it for me?' - Yeah.

"I got it, I got it. It's for me!"

You know what, she's gonna be an Academy Award winner.

[Jon] 'She's better than any of them.'

"I'd just like to thank my roommates.

They totally, they totally supported me."

[Dominic] "The kitty."

[instrumental music]

Jon made up this story...

that the cat, he did, like, a full indie..

From the balcony..

[Aaron] Did, like, a head plant

into the Hinckley Schmidt water bottle.

Thump.

[Beth] 'It was just laying there?'

Don't make this a big dramatical thing.

Internal bleeding, broken ribs, his back.

Ohh, did that hurt? This is serious.

Be careful, please be careful.

These two specialists of, uh, cat chiropractors

at UCI in Stanford weren't in.

- Oh my gosh. - What?

He's got a tumor.

They also wanted to do some tests on Beth.

Actually, you know, what's happened, the tumors

have moved from the cat's spine

to Beth's head, which explains the headache.

I'm seeing a pattern now.

But, you know, they've jumped over.

[Aaron] 'Are you going skiing?'

[Beth] 'I've never been skiing.'

[Irene] 'Yeah, Mount Baldy has a nine to ten-foot base.'

- Where are you gonna go? - To the summit.

'We already got tickets.'

- 'Wanna go?' - Yeah!

Do you want to go with us, Beth?

Maybe I should stay and take him to the vet.

My cat.

[Jon] 'Wimp! Go skiing, your cat's fine.'

I don't know. What do you think?

Beth, I think you should go because, you know

it doesn't snow that much in southern California.

My back isn't hurt that bad.

And I was so worried, I didn't go skiing

with Dominic and Aaron.

♪ And never even left a lane ♪

[Dominic] Going from the beach in the morning

to the snow by mid-morning

it's one of the great things about Los Angeles.

Let's go.

- Come on, my dudes. - Let's do it.

[instrumental music]

You know, at times like this I miss Jon.

When there's a possibility of an avalanche.

Will Jon venture out in daylight hours

on his own?

I don't know, but it's worrying all of us.

[instrumental music]

[Dominic] Jon rises

somewhere between : and just after noon every day.

He enters the shower.

Country music is played.

He sings along.

Moves to the ground floor.

I haven't really checked what he does down there.

Then it's up to the couch.

And watching "TNN" for the rest of the day.

[Dominic] Broken up by trips to the refrigerator

for large doses of Kool-Aid.

Jon came out here with the attitude that

"This Kentucky boy is not gonna get changed by Los Angeles.

He's gonna stay the same way he is."

[Aaron] Go check out that place and see if you can work there.

I don't think I want to, I just tried to explain it.

[Aaron] 'Want to, you don't have any options, right now.'

[Dominic] 'Get a damn job, Jon.'

I do have options.

[Dominic] 'Like what?'

Initially, David and I said

"Listen if you need help, we'll help you find a job."

"I don't want your help."

Then, "There's a lot of western bars we could contact."

"No, I don't want your help."

I don't need to yell at him every day

and go "What the hell is wrong with you?"

'Cause I'm not his dad, but..

I have a life.

[Jon] California is the fish tank.

All the other fish were here.

They knew what the fish tank was like, they explored it.

But you take a new fish

and you put him in the fish tank

it takes him a long time to get adjusted.

You gotta meet the other fish.

You gotta see what's in the fish tank.

And all that takes time.

[instrumental music]

You know, you play pool like you talk, out your a*s.

That's true.

You talk so much out of your a*s, it's unbelievable.

I'm gonna start buying you a pair of "Depends" diapers

for your..

[laughs]

[Jon] 'Well, that'll learn me.'

- "That'll learn me?" - Teach you, teach you.

I guess there's only a certain point

where you can keep in-breeding.

Oh, man, there was no need for that.

That's not even funny.

See, now look who's talking.

You show your ignorance when you make statements like that.

You should apologize for that.

It's a joke!

It's pissing me off, that's what it's doing.

Especially when it comes to Jon.

Aaron just loves to pick on Jon.

But how do you not take offense to someone

constantly putting you on a lower level?

But at the same time, what do you want to do about it?

You want to challenge them to a fight outside?

[instrumental music]

[Irene] I like being with Jon.

He's a nice person. He's fun to get along with.

The idea of taking Jon out for the weekend

with me was, um, Tami's idea.

Got up very early.

It's probably the earliest

Jon has gotten up since he's been here.

Just to go play basketball.

[Jon] Irene's home town really reminded me of my home town.

You had everything you wanted.

You know, you had movie theaters, grocery stores

whatever, uh, restaurants.

But you weren't, like, in the fast pace

and that's really what I like about my home town.

[all] Oohhh!

Actually, it was a weekend, a whole weekend

she had a chance to get away from everybody

and she actually choose me to go, you know, with her.

So I mean, I think

I think that I was really a nice gesture.

Me and Jon have a really good bond.

He calls me "Ma'am". Maybe I like that.

That's probably my nature. I want to take care of him.

Even after I'm gone, I'm gonna come back here

and make sure he's okay and no one's picking on him.

That's why I like her a lot more than the rest of the people.

Because, you know, she's good-hearted.

I want him to feel as much at home as possible here.

Um, I get angry sometimes with Aaron

the way he talks to, um, Jon.

And sometimes he, like, degrades him.

[instrumental music]

[Aaron] 'Dom, how do you suppose there are spots here on the floor?'

Let's try and figure this.

It's near the fridge, right?

- 'Yeah.' - Okay, so--

So, someone probably came over here

and opened this the day--

But let's try, let's try and--

- Hypothetically. - Okay.

So, it's like "Rescue: ." It's a re-enactment.

Alright, we're looking for a red, red..

Oh look, the milk is a red box.

Yeah, let's take a look.

No, nothing else is red.

What could it be?

It couldn't possibly be.

Is this, is this red?

It is red.

We're gonna have to do a test.

Late '.

- How much? - I'll tell you when to stop.

Keep going.

I'd stop, now.

It's bubbling.

[Dominic] We rib Jon a little, and he ribs us back.

We don't get on anyone's case.

But if someone else, you know, wants to joke with Jon, too

then it may look as if we're ganging up

but we're not.

Jon's a funny guy.

A funny guy who sits on the couch..

...all day.

I can't imagine myself

going to a regular job every day.

If something happens and I don't make it in country music

I'll always listen to country music

and I'll always like to perform it

you know, somewhere or another.

Actually, I don't like to think about that.

I'd like to think that I'm gonna make it.

[instrumental music]

And I told Jon to-to come with us.

Oh, yay, LA's version of-of country music.

During the week, I'm a very serious person.

All the tension that I get from work and the stress

I have to let it out.

I'll have a couple of drinks just to get loose

and, and have a good time

and I love to be with my friends.

So, we all met there at Western Connection.

It's a really big place to two-step.

Maybe, he could even sing there.

So, I'd just like to sing a couple of songs

if the band doesn't mind.

- 'How old are you?' - Huh?

- 'How old are you?' - I'm twenty-three.

- 'Twenty-three?' - Yeah, almost twenty-four.

I brought this kid there, you know.

Hoping that he would do good and not b*mb.

Please welcome Jon Brennan.

[audience cheering]

[instrumental music]

[Jon] Western connection was home, sweet home.

Uh, people wearing hats and buckles

and shirts and boots

and everything else. It was great!

♪ Out in the country past the City Limits sign ♪

♪ And there's a h*nky-tonk near the county line ♪

♪ The joint starts jumpin' every night ♪

♪ When the sun goes down ♪

[Irene] He shocked me.

♪ Yeah get down turn around ♪

Here, he sometimes acts like a little boy

um, but when he's on stage, he acts like a mature person.

He just plays to the crowd

and he knows how to get them going.

And I think he feels more comfortable up there too.

- Beth, you next! - Please, please, no! No!

We'll go head-up in this mother..

How long ago did you put a whole cup

of extra sugar in my Kool-Aid?

- I didn't put any extra sugar. - Dom told me.

Dominic put it in there, I was in Zurich.

No, that's not the way he explained it at all.

- What'd he say? - He said, "Yeah."

"Aaron put a whole cup of extra sugar in."

Ohh! Was it bad?

No, it made it better, actually.
