Hi, my name is Dominic.
Originally born in Dublin, Ireland.
Grew up there, went to school there.
But I left when I was .
I'm going to the airport today
to pick up someone I've never met before in my life
but I'm gonna live with.
We're gonna travel across America
and pick up another person
who I've never met before in my life.
And end up in Venice, California
to try and get along.
Oh, my God, I guarantee you somebody's
gonna leave ahead of time.
Somebody's gonna leave.
Just be yourself and you'll get through it.
[Dominic] Can't see me causing any problems.
Unless someone makes me.
I didn't know who I was gonna meet
if it was gonna be boy, girl, black, white.
I had no idea who this person was
what he-she was gonna be like
if we were gonna at least tolerate each other.
When I say tolerate, I wasn't sure if we were gonna like
be at each other's throats
but tolerate, I guess, is an understatement.
And up until Tami said something to me..
I had to get help for my luggage.
I expected someone on her own.
But she came out and said hi to me
so I assumed this must be Tami.
- I'm Dominic. - What's up, Dominic?
- I'm Tami, nice meeting you. - Nice meeting you, Tami.
I guess we're gonna know a little about each other.
Yes.
[Tami] Meeting Dominic was a major surprise.
He wasn't what I expected when I got off the plane.
But he's cool, but..
[laughs] The first meeting was a surprise.
I'll get that for you, Tami. Give me this.
- It's heavy. - Ah, don't worry about it.
You're giving out phone numbers already?
He gave me his.
I thought she was very attractive and very cute.
- What have you got in there? - When did you get here?
We're only here for a week. I got here last night.
- Oh, really? - Yeah.

'We're gonna go to Kentucky next.'
- Huh? - 'Kentucky.'

We're driving cross-country
that's something I never thought I would do.
And then we're driving to Kentucky
which is somewhere I never thought I'd be.
So, yeah, I was kind of unsure about it all.
Do I need to put my seat belt on?
I got holy water if you wanna bless yourself.

I'll buckle up for safety.
Twenty two weeks, somebody will get to the point
where "I don't care what's gonna happen.
I don't care, I can't take this no more, I'm out."
I-I wish, wish them luck, but, I mean..
I don't know, I don't know how it's gonna work out.
I hope they don't k*ll each other.
[laughing]
So, what do you do?
I write a music column in a magazine.
[Dominic] I contribute television reviews
for daily variety
and I do several music columns to a California paper.
Jesus, it's the most amazing thing in the world.
You give your opinion of something
and someone pays you.
What type of music do you like?
R&B.
I really wanna get into singing.
I have a four-girl group
and, um, we're in the process of signing some paperwork
with a major record label in LA.

because they're the only four-girl group

I work at an HIV Healthcare center.

And then you find out they're not there anymore.
It's-it takes a toll on you after a while.

Well, it just looks like you just mousse your hair anyway.
- Well, I do, but.. - 'So why do you need a dryer?'

There's really not much difference in it.
I was gonna say, isn't it gonna look the same?
[Tami] He has a lot more hair than I do.
He puts it all the way out there.
He does jobs with that hair, that's for sure.
Louisville, that's Kentucky, along with Jack Daniels.
Well, I didn't see any black people in Kentucky
and I kinda heard all these weird stories
about Kentucky, so I was kinda..
...kinda...intimidated by the situation.

I would just try to stress to them
that whether you want to or not
you're gonna have an impact on people's lives.
Whether you think it's right or wrong
or silly or stupid, you're going to.
And I just think you should try and make it a positive one.
The guy we're going to pick up, I wonder what he's thinking.

[Jon] Well, they're gonna look at me and they're gonna think
"Well, he's weird," or they might think
"Well, he's an interesting person
"he's definitely not like someone around here.
"Does he really have a cowboy hat on?

- 'The doorbell.' - We got us a cowboy.

- Dominic. - Dominic. Jon.
- Tami. Nice meeting you. - Tami.
[Dominic] Jon being the third party was a little shocking.
He opened the door going
"Yee-ha, come on in."
I've seen cowboy movies and you really don't think, y'know
that there's this person with a hat that talks like that
and this high-end voice, I didn't think..
I-I thought it was a Hollywood creation.
You got all your stuff?
We're not leaving until morning.
We're not?
Right?

When are we leaving?

I had this really stereotypical, bad
degrading image in my mind of these hillbillies.
It's a shame, really, that the only America
I know is through television and movies.
I must seem like this crazy person.
When he first walked in, I was like
"This guy is so weird, he's gonna freak me out.
I'm just gonna stay away from him."
Are you hungry?
Nah, not really. A little thirsty.
I can get you something to drink.
[Dominic] You want something to drink?
When we got there and he says, "Are you hungry?"
I said, "No, I'm thirsty."
I was actually referring to a beer
and then a Coca-Cola came out.
[Jon] Well, see, I was raised in a Christian home
and we don't have alcohol in the house.
And if he wanted a drink
he didn't get one in my house.
Y'know, it wasn't even like, "What would you like, a beer?"
It was like, "There you go, a soda." Okay.
[Jon] So your name's Dominic?
- 'Yeah.' - And your name's Tami?
- Tami. - How old are you?
- 'Twenty-two.' - Twenty-four.
- I'm . - Oh, a young one.
I'm singing tonight at a place called
Goldie's Best Little Opryhouse.
- Nearby? - 'Yeah.'
- So you going? - What, yeah. Yeah!
What time you going on?
Eight o'clock, it starts at :.
We're gonna listen to some country music.
[instrumental music]

[Dominic] He is a hell of a performer in a country sense
because I judge the performer by the reaction of the crowd
not by, you know, what I thought of the music.
And the crowd loved him.

[Tami] After coming from his house and meeting him
I didn't feel I could really open up to him
and really have anything in common with him.
But then seeing him on stage
and seeing how good he was with the audience
and how he captured the audience
I realized that we had a lot in common
and I think he's gonna go far.
Ladies and gentlemen, that's our show.
Jon has t-shirts, sweatshirts and pictures..
Someone told me that Goldie's actually
is starting a Jon Brennan fan club
while he's away.
But after the show, I couldn't believe
he's in the lobby and everyone who was there
I think even his brothers, were clamoring for autographs.
Jon!
I'm so glad to see you.
I think Jon expects to find a Goldie's opera house
you know, smack-bang in the middle of Hollywood.
Did I make some country music fans or what?
- Yeah. - Alright!

[Jon] No matter how successful I get, I will..
I mean, this will always be home.
You always gotta have a home. And, uh, Goldie's and church.
Those are the places where I really know that I'm supported.
[female #] He's only and he hasn't been exposed
to a lot of things he's gonna be exposed to
because there's lots of risks involved.
And he's gonna see and meet people and do things
that he's not used to.
He'd be a whole lot safer here in the Bible Belt at home
that's for sure.

And I guess he was getting this feeling
that we were never gonna get here.
[Dominic] You know, when I say, "Look, there's the freeway
right there, right there!"
A-and he passed right by it.
I give up.
I'm sure we probably passed our exit
for Graceland a good three times
before we finally decided "We'll take this one," you know.
- There's Graceland. - Where?
To the left.

[Dominic] I'm a huge Elvis fan but
it doesn't rule my life like some people.
"Free Elvis movies for hours?"
[male #] You have free -hour Elvis movies in your room.

[Dominic] When are we going out?
Nah, I'm not going to a bar!
- Well-- - I can't even get in a bar.
Well, we'll see what's uptown and..
Well, you got beer in your suitcase, why you gotta go--

I said Dominic, "I think you're drinking too much."
And he didn't say anything at that time 'cause he..
"Ah, ah" you know, he just mumbled away.
But in his opinion he's not drinking too much.

He's drinking too much that I'm used to.
[Jon] 'Hey, wait up, Dominic!'

I've never, ever, had a single drug in my body

I'm not even sure that those things are wrong.

I am severely addicted to nicotine and I've gotta stop.
I don't know that if smoking is wrong
I know that it shortens your life, that's a proven fact.
Dominic's made the statement
"Well, I think it's okay as long as you don't hurt anybody else."
But, you know, smoking is actually hurting
other people, we're told now.
[Dominic] I hate anyone judging me and..
...maybe I'm not leading the ideal lifestyle
maybe I can take from these people as well.
Eight hours in a Winnebago, you gotta learn something.
I mean, you're pretty ignorant and stupid
if you don't learn from traveling
with two people across the country for a week.
[instrumental music]
Dominic and I were playing with this eight ball.
It's this ball, that you shake it up
you ask it a yes-or-no question
and we asked it if Jon was going get laid
when he came to LA.
Go on, ask him, ask him.
[Jon] 'Well, ask me.'

[Dominic] 'After six months in LA will Jon get laid there?'

He just went bright red and got pissed off
that we were discussing his sex life.
[Tami] He was pissed at me for like, a day, I think
'cause he felt...that
we should not be talking about his-his sexuality.
[Jon] 'Alright, would you just shut up about that?'
[Jon] Well, the Bible clearly states
no sex before marriage and
you ruin it if you mess it up.
[Tami laughing]
[Jon] So she shakes the eight ball..
[Tami] And it said..

I can't believe I walked over

and is shocked by the word sex.

So we just, you know, that's kind of a derogatory statement.

You said, "Look like you all."
I said, "Like you all, two people like you all."
- 'Come on, Jon.' - You're covering up.
[Jon] 'I'm not.. I have no secrets.'
You're gonna be living with us for six months
I'm gonna ride you on this for six months.
It was my turn to be slammed
because I'd said something that offended both of them.
So I just said, "We'll drop it
"I shouldn't have said anything."
Oh, I thought I'm stubborn.
'My parents probably like the idea'
of me going cross-country with a religious country boy.
Maybe some of it would rub off on me.
I'm a firm believer that if you don't believe, you know
the basic principles of Christianity, that you're lost.
[Jon] 'Are we getting lost, Dominic?'

It's kind of like, just, free-flow belly dancin'.
