The real world...

Kevin and eric decided that

They wanted the room,

And that was it.

Well, my sister asked if

She could sleep in my bed.

But that was a big problem.

You know, I heard that she

Was still here.

I was like, "wow."

Who doesn't smoke?

I mean, you have to deal

With cigarette smoke

Your whole life, so...

You know, wherever you go.

I need my sleep.

Yeah, me too.

I really got to sleep.

Oh, no, I got to get--

I need to sleep really

Soundly or else I'm a mess

The next day.

I sleep all the day.

'Cause I got to wake up

Early a lot.

So why don't we make a loud

I've ever--i mean, I walk in,

And half the people have

Sunglasses on, so I was thinking

To myself, "okay, people don't

Want to look each other

In the eyes here."

What's your beef?

When we first moved in,

It was kind of--from my

Standpoint, I had told people

That I go to bed early because I

Have to get up early.

How can somebody that has to

Go to bed at : and be up by,

Like, : or : pick a room

With a big win--not even window.

A hole?

I mean, that is so stupid.

Now you have to deal with it.

Well, then, we should, like,

Maybe draw up some kind of

Scheduling thing where on

The weekdays, there's, like,

A certain hour which we call it

Curfew where people can stay up

But you have to be really quiet.

I don't think it's

A schedule thing.

This is whack, because we can

Say as much as we want about

Being quiet, and it ain't gonna

Happen no matter what you say,

If you're gonna be quiet or not,

'Cause you hear everything

In this place--everything.

Whatever.

You should just go to a hotel,

Because you just--you ain't

Never gonna be happy.

And it don't bother me.

If we had this meeting now--

If we had this meeting now

Or not.

I ain't gonna say nothing.

I mean, I just think in every

Situation, there's just a lot of

Inconsideration.

You know, and that doesn't

Make any sense to me if we're

Supposed to be living here

Together, and people just aren't

Considerate, you know.

Well, your schedule tends to

Be the most complicated.

Logistically, it's just gonna be

Really demanding on all of us

To, like, really work your

Schedule out to your maximum

Benefit, you know?

I'm not saying everyone go to

Bed when I go to bed, but,

You know, I think--i mean,

Just let's communicate with each

Other, you know what I'm saying?

You know, if you're gonna have--

It's just kind of hard to

Communicate when--i mean,

Personally, we didn't think you

Were gonna show up today.

I'm gonna get smashed for

This, but there is a difference

Between, like, our ages and you

Guys' ages.

Life changes at a certain point,

And, like, you're less tolerant

Of certain things, because

There's so much more at stake in

Different ways.

Okay, y'all can talk all you

Want about this.

It's true, though, julie.

Well, okay, yeah, it is true,

But, I mean--and you say--

I'm just talking about

Living patterns.

Right.

I'm not talking about

Somebody's older and better.

Oh, I understand that

Totally.

You see what I'm saying?

I'm just saying it's--

But, I mean, if this is

A level of maturity, let me

Never be mature,

'Cause I think there's--

That's not what I said.

There's a lot of

Self-centeredness in your

Elderness.

Ugh!

That's not what I said.

It would be different if it

Was the young--you know,

The younger ones staying up late

And making all the noise,

But it's not.

You know, she's up doing it half

The time.

She didn't even really call

Herself on that.

Julie, don't take it

Personally.

I'm not taking it personally.

Yes, you are.

What I'm saying is that it's not

That we're more mature.

It's just that there's a

Different kind of way of living.

There is.

You can't deny it.

Ugh!

Let's see.

The other night--the other night

I got a message that my friends

Came by and I wasn't told.

I'm sorry.

I should have told you

The message.

They also said, "you should tell

Him we stopped by," so...

The phone.

Hello?

Yeah, hold on a sec.

The phone is the biggest

Difficulty of living together,

Undoubtedly.

And the one line

That we have...

Yeah, hold on.

One moment.

Heather--who knows who she

Talks to hours a day, but

She's on that phone--she even

Has to go to a payphone

Sometimes.

I hate phones.

I think that's why

Everybody's so uptight, man.

Well, I'm not.

There's been so many little

Problems here.

I want to hear some more

About the house guest, 'cause

I heard earlier in the week

There was some problems with,

Like, house guests.

Let's talk about it.

Yeah, well, eric, I have no

Problem with people coming over

And stuff, but your sister came,

And, you know, I didn't know

She was coming.

You know what I mean?

Yeah, you did.

No, I didn't.

You said she could sleep in--

You said that she could sleep in

On your bed.

I don't recall saying that.

You said, "I'm not gonna be

Here, so you can stay here

This weekend."

I said that?

Last weekend.

I don't recall that.

If I did--

You said that to me.

I don't recall that.

But even if I wasn't here,

It was, like, when I came back,

She was still here.

Hey, kim!

Line two for you.

Kim is not the most popular

Person in our loft.

I mean, she comes in and she's

There and she has a presence,

And then she leaves.

Eric's sister is eric's

Best friend.

I mean, it was almost like

A protection to have

His sister around.

And there's nothing wrong

With that.

It's just, I think, 'cause I

Wasn't told; nobody was told;

We weren't asked if that's

All right.

Thanks for letting me stay.

See you.

But my point is, like,

You know, if you knew she was

Gonna stay for a certain amount

Of time, you know, you at least

Could've had the courtesy--

I didn't know.

That was the whole thing.

I don't know, man.

I just, like, in the future--

No, but change--it doesn't

Matter.

It doesn't matter anyway, 'cause

She's not gonna sleep here

Anymore anyway, so...

It's cool.

No, it does matter.

It does matter.

It's principle we're

Talking about.

[All talking over each other]

The subject's over.

It's not gonna happen again.

So we don't need to talk

About it.

No, the subject is not over,

Okay?

You know, I don't have

A problem with house guests and

Stuff like that, but, you know,

At least let us know what's

Going on.

It's like, I thought

She moved in.

You know?

You know, like, I love my

Sister a lot, and if she's

Uncomfortable, then I'm

Uncomfortable, and I don't like

That, and I don't like when my

Sister is uncomfortable.

And if somebody is making her

Uncomfortable, I'm gonna,

You know, do something about it.

That's just the way I am.

[Brash guitar solo]

It was just one thing after

Another.

It just kept building up

And building up.

I don't know what he wrote.

So then he wrote me this

Letter basically telling me

How he felt.

He should've typed it.

I'm telling you.

Yeah, 'cause I don't know

What the [bleep] that say.

That look like a bunch of

Scrabble.

I wrote this letter to eric,

And it seems like everybody else

In the loft read it.

And it wasn't my intention for

Anyone else to see it.

It was, you know, something

Between him and i.

We shouldn't be reading this,

Heather.

Why?

Because it's not to us.

So what?

He left it out there.

Okay, you want me to just

Read it to you?

Yeah, just read it to me.

Okay.

"Dear eric..."

"Eric"--no "dear."

Oh.

We're not that nice yet.

Are you listening?

You're, like, worrying

With that hair.

I'm listening, but--

"What I said to you last

Night I meant, and I know for

A fact that I'm not the only

Person in this loft

Who has that feeling.

However, to get bent out of

Shape over it and walk around

The party like a pruding"--

What?

"Pruding head."

What is he talking about?

It says...

As a what?

"As the average person."

That's the end of the letter?

No, but I can't believe

He said that.

"As a c-o-n-s-e"--

I don't know.

Whatever.

"As--i have to work twice as

Hard as the average person.

I wasn't born with a silver

Spoon in my mouth."

Oh!

So is he saying that we're all

Born with silver spoons in our

Mouth except for him, and he's

The only one who's had to work

Hard for anything?

That's how he lookin' at it.

That's his observation of

The whole thing.

No one is right when

People get their feelings hurt.

It ain't your problem.

I know it's not my problem.

I just still feel bad now.

Julie, but you know what?

What?

I bet you after all this they

Still won't talk about it.

If we sat down and talked

About it earlier, probably,

You know, all the heat and

The tension in the apartment,

You know, would've been easier.

Eric, when did you get this?

This morning.

It's very hard to read

The writing.

"Fact."

God, this writing.

I can't read it.

I know.

If that was "pouting."

I don't know what this is.

I don't know what

This word is.

"And as i"--[mumbles]

"To be walting around

The room like a pouting

Something."

"Kid."

Is that what that says?

"Kid"?

It looks like "lid."

"In this society, your life

Is valued more than mine.

I feel I have to work twice as

Hard as the average...

Person."

Want me to read it?

Well, what do you--what do

You think about what he's saying

In that?

What do I think about it?

I think it's [bleep] a bunch

Of bull[bleep].

I'm sorry.

That was a mean letter.

This is--this is how I see

It, okay?

Like, I've gathered all this

Information from day one when

I first met kevin, okay?

He seemed to be, you know, like,

A cool--like, a cool kid,

You know?

When I first started talking to

Him, I thought he was really

Cool, you know.

He was interested in some of

The things that I was interested

In, some of the same music.

You know, he likes to play

Basketball.

He used to run track.

So, you know, I thought,

You know, really cool, you know?

So then I went away for, like,

Four days or whatever.

And I came back, and I didn't

Think that I would've been such

A big deal for my sister

To stay here.

When I came back and he had

A problem with that, that's what

Ticked me off the most.

And I didn't--and I was cool

About it.

I didn't want to cause any

Commotion in here.

I didn't want to make a big deal

About it, you know, because I

Didn't--i just didn't want

Anybody to feel uncomfortable.

You know, so I was like, "fine.

If you feel uncomfortable that

She's here, you know,

This is your apartment too."

Then cool.

But ever since then, he's given

My sister the cold shoulder.

Oh.

Attitude, faces, and

Expressions that she tells me.

Now, that's wrong.

And I don't appreciate that.

You're talking about my sister,

My family, that I love more than

Anything in the world.

I could give a [bleep] what

He thinks.

Right now, you are--you're

Not his seeing his point of

View, and he's not seeing your

Point of view, and you both

Think you know

Who each other is.

I don't think--i don't think

I know who he is.

I don't know one thing

About kevin.

Okay, okay.

The only thing I ever said

Anything was nice things about

Kevin, because I thought he was

A nice person.

Right now I hate him.

I hate him so bad.

Regardless of that--

Regardless of that, you have to

Come up with some kind of common

Ground, I mean, 'cause he's your

Roommate.

But--he's my roommate.

So what?

You know, I mean, here's

Somebody--here's somebody who

Has dissed--who has dissed my

Sister, who's a part of my

Family, that, I mean, is

The biggest thing in the world

To me, and then he did it to me

To my face in front of one of

His friends.

And then he has the nerve to say

That my sister is in the way and

He needs his space, and his

Friend just moved in here.

He was here all last night,

All today, slept on the couch,

Hung out here all day while

Kevin was gone.

We got a new roommate.

I think kevin was pretty much

Out of line writing the letter

Just because it left eric with

So much time to mill it over in

His head and build up steam.

It was just like a pressure

Cooker, practically.

He wrote you a letter?

Better guard his grill,

That's all I got to say.

And knuckle up.

Better sleep--he better

Sleep light.

Who wrote this?

He did to me.

It's hard to understand.

Crazy.

Oh, man.

Crazy.

There's my man.

Get crazy.

His friends were over,

And once again, instead of

Coming to me and telling me how

He felt, he was just telling

Everybody else how he felt.

I got upset, you know.

[Tapping]

If it's gonna really happen,

I want you to just sit there and

Check it out.

Next on the real world...

Yeah, "the black-white..."

Together: "thing is always

In effect..."

"No matter how hard we wish

It would go away."

No, man.

First of all--first of all,

I'm not going out of my way any

More than I already do.

Missy is, like, my oldest

Love from, like, seventh grade.

And I really screwed up.

It was either, "get in the car

Or you're under arrest for

Trespassing."

Logically, any parent in the

World wouldn't want their child

To be hanging out with somebody

Like me.

Oh, [bleep].

We should make a suggestion--

A complaint box.

Just put it there.

Well, say we should do that,

And then, like, if we ate

Dinner, you know, once a week

With everybody, we should just

Open the box and...

[Laughing] just read it off.

You don't have to sign your

Name, but you would know who

It was.

You know, like, what your

Complaint was.

I don't want--

[Laughs]

You know that would start

Some great arguments.

You know, "what?

You got mad at me for that?

What?"

And you know you'd be yelling

About that macaroni and cheese.

If somebody says anything

About me, I'll say, "so what?"

"Heather, you left a pot of

Macaroni and cheese."

"So what?"

[Both laughing]

So let's make a box,

And let's just have, like,

Complaints in there before

The box even gets started.

[Both laugh]
