There are cabs for this sort of thing.

You sound resentful.

I am not resentful, but I don't feel responsible for Anne.

[chuckles]

I'm not responsible.

-Then you feel sorry for her. -Yeah, right, okay, fine, yeah.

I feel sorry for Anne, okay? You happy?

You think she'd go through all that just

so I'd be sorry for her?

Yes.

Well, maybe she did, but maybe she didn't.

And if she does this stunt again,

then I'll feel responsible for her.

Hey!

In the back, guys.

Gee, I'm sorry I took so long. I couldn't find an elevator

big enough to carry all this stuff.

Good thing you brought the van.

Actually, it's a wagon.

-Well, what would I know? -Let's go.

[Anne] Let's go.

Mack, you look tired.

I'll drive.

Well...

Oh, I'll get this, and put it in the back.

Oh, it-- it might tip over.

[Anne sighs]

I wouldn't want to get dirt in your wagon.

[dramatic music plays]

[car engine revs]

[tires screech]

[soft knocking on door]

-Hi, honey. -Hi.

You busy?

Just reading.

Senator Hollister and I had a long talk about you today.

-About me? -Mm-hmm.

He's worried that you're spending

too much time on this anti-drug program.

I don't mind.

Well, I know, but he, uh...

he doesn't want you to fall behind in your schoolwork,

and, of course, neither do I.

Honey, it's nothing personal.

You've done a terrific job.

It is personal.

Peter wouldn't want anyone else working with him.

He likes me.

[sighs] Well, of course he does.

I mean, he likes me a lot.

[Abby] Honey...

Maybe you've misunderstood.

Just because Peter has said some things that--

He's done more than that.

He gave me this.

[tense music plays]

"To O.C. from P.H. with love."

Well, that's very sweet.

I'm sure he wanted to thank you for all your help.

But Peter is much older than you are, Olivia,

and the women that he's...

interested in romantically, are...

are more mature.

Then why did he kiss me?

When did that happen?

Today.

And it wasn't just a peck on the cheek.

So don't tell me that I misunderstood.

[tense music plays]

I have to do something. Tomorrow's the funeral.

What are you so worried about?

My mother gave Olivia that letter

to give to Gary Ewing in case something unusual happened.

Well, don't you think that to Olivia,

drowning in a bathtub might constitute

something unusual?

If I were her...

I'd give it to Gary.

Or...

I'd give it to a really good girlfriend.

-Like me. -Don't you ever...

say anything to Olivia about any of this.

She doesn't even know Sylvia's dead yet.

Oh, my, my. Aren't we touchy?

What's in that letter?

Family business.

Well, you can trust me.

I mean...

I'm practically family now.

-[knocking on door] -Mm!

It's probably Olivia.

Huh. I can come back.

No, no, no. Come on in.

Paige was just leaving.

-Thank you for coming. -Oh, my pleasure.

Uh, look, I know you and I aren't friends,

but, um...

I am sorry about your mother.

Thank you.

But you told me that already.

[sighs] Right.

I want you to invite Jill to the funeral.

-Jill? -Yeah, Jill, your sister.

Sylvia was her mother, too, and I don't want her to go

through life feeling guilty,

because she missed her mother's funeral.

So call her.

Oh, uh...

Don't worry about you and Jill. I'm not gonna tell anybody.

As far as I'm concerned, your secret can stay

buried with your mother.

[laughs]

I heard of people doing this before.

It's very neighborly.

Oh, well, I didn't think you were up for shopping yet.

-How do you feel? -Fine.

You know, there are just a few easier

ways to get someone to go and get you some

magazines, and juice, and broccoli, and things.

Anne,

I don't want you to ever, ever do anything like this again.

It's just not worth it.

You don't think I was trying to k*ll myself, do you?

You started a note.

I admit I was upset about some things that you said,

enough to take a few tranquilizers, but...

More than a few.

I had one drink too many. I lost count.

And it wasn't a suicide note.

That was a farewell letter.

You had asked me to leave.

It was an accident, Mack.

Really, it was.

[sighs]

I don't want to talk about it anymore.

And I don't want you to feel guilty.

I'll put this stuff away for you.

[Anne sobs]

Anne. Anne.

[sobbing]

[whimpers]

-I did want to die. -No, no, no, no, no.

I do.

I hate myself for making you feel guilty.

[sighs]

Hello.

Oh, hi.

Can I help?

Actually...

Yes, you can.

It seems to be tangled. Could you hold that?

Mm-hmm. So, where's Mack?

With your mother.

Oh.

Oh, what?

Oh, she's convincing him

that it was a real suicide attempt.

And you're convinced that it wasn't.

[Paige] Aren't you?

[laughs] Poor Mack. He's in for a big one.

[laughs] Poor Mack can take care of himself.

[Paige] Well, sure.

If he wants to.

If he wants to what?

If he wants a snack.

You're going to have to make it yourself, if you do.

Well, I'm not hungry.

Do you plan on seeing your mother?

I mean, you ought to see your mother.

She's pretty sick.

And she did admit that it was an attempt at suicide.

[dramatic music plays]

[Jill] Thank you.

How could you tell him about us?

I love Gary.

And I want him to know the truth.

You told him you were a Galveston.

No, I told him that you were my brother.

And since he believes that you're telling

the truth about who you are,

he presumes that I'm a Galveston, too.

But you didn't correct him.

You're a public official with a false identity!

[sighs]

If Gary knew the truth, the whole truth,

he would feel a moral obligation to reveal that you are a fraud.

A moral obligation?

I wonder who would be in line for my office if I get ousted.

Maybe my former campaign opponent?

[knocking]

-Come in. -You have a visitor.

Well, glad to see you two are finally speaking.

Michael said you were.

Dating Peter Hollister?

[laughs]

Michael has a very active imagination.

So, you're not.

Well, we've been to a few of the same social events,

but I'd hardly call that dating.

Oh, Michael.

Some guys never get anything straight.

[laughs]

Did you know that Peter's mother died?

What?

Well, she slipped and fell in the bathtub.

Can you believe that?

Where did you hear that?

Do you think it was an accident?

It's hard to drown in a tub on purpose.

Maybe it was meant to look like an accident.

Maybe somebody did something to her.

Michael's not the only one with an active imagination.

I was thinking about the letter that Sylvia gave me.

If something suspicious were to happen,

I should give it to Gary.

But if Peter found out, it might hurt his feelings.

-Hmm. -[sighs]

What should I do?

Well, that's easy.

Let's read it.

I couldn't do that. Sylvia trusted me.

[Abby] You're intentionally leading her on.

I can't help it if Olivia

misinterprets simple kindness.

You so much as look at my daughter again,

I'll be on Greg Sumner's doorstep so fast,

it'll make your head spin,

and I will tell him the truth about you.

I'm not interested in your daughter!

[phone rings]

Peter Hollister.

Peter, I'm sorry about your mother.

I just heard, and I had to call.

It was an accident, right?

Yes.

Yes, it was.

But, you know, that's life, and these things will happen.

There's something I need to talk to you about.

Is it okay if I come to the funeral?

Oh, please do.

[Olivia] Okay, I'll see you there.

[sighs]

Thank you for calling, sir. Goodbye.

One wrong move. Just one.

[door slams forcefully]

It's almost noon.

Ben?

Don't you think you ought to go upstairs and get dressed?

I'm not going anywhere.

-Ben. -Mm-hmm?

I'm worried about you.

Come on.

You're not sleeping.

You're not working.

You look like you're losing weight, to me.

You can't go on like this.

I know this whole thing has been awful for all of us,

but somehow we're gonna have to get our lives back in order.

I'll get dressed in a minute.

[somber music plays]

[Valene sighs heavily]

Let me finish these.

Bobby and Betsy prefer it my way, anyway.

See, you put the peanut butter on both slices,

and then the jelly in the middle,

and that way, it doesn't leak through.

-Mm-hmm. -Go on. Let me talk to him.

-I won't bite. -I know.

-Ben? -Mm-hmm?

I know what a difficult time you're having.

Thank you.

But the twins don't.

I'm sure you think of how they're seeing you lately.

What would you have me do?

Get dressed up in a three-piece suit

every morning, and pretend

I'm going off to advance my career?

Why pretend? Go back to work.

[scoffs]

-Who would hire me? -Oh, come on.

There's always Abby Ewing.

Abby Ewing? Oh.

Believe me, there's no love lost

between Abby Ewing, and myself.

Well, maybe so, but...

you always loved your work.

Your children need to see you caring

about something again, Ben.

And for their sake, yours, too.

Go talk to Abby.

[melancholy music plays]

[sighs] Can't you remember to knock?

[knocking lightly]

What's with your outfit? Where are you going?

To a funeral?

[Olivia] As a matter of fact, I am.

I know we've had our differences in the past, Abby.

A lot of 'em.

And I know that when I quit...

When I left your employ...

that there were some bad feelings between us.

And for that, I apologize.

And you'd like your old job back as station manager at PWC?

Yeah, well, that-- if the-- if the job is, uh...

That's, um... no.

No.

I must be crazy.

Well, you are, if you think I'd give you the job back.

Well, it wouldn't do you any good if you did,

because I would never work for you,

or anyone even remotely like you ever again.

Oh, Ben.

[sighs heavily]

I was hoping you would ask for your job back,

and give me the opportunity to, uh,

turn you down cold.

Now I guess I'll have to settle for having you thrown out.

Don't bother. I'm goin'.

But you can be guaranteed I won't be back, ever again.

Oh, and I was afraid this meeting

was gonna end unpleasantly.

-[buzzer] -Oh, Ben.

Uh, don't forget to remember me to Valene.

-[Olivia] Hi. -Hi.

It means a lot to me that you're here.

How are you?

I'm alright.

It was a terrible accident.

But that sort of thing happens

to older people a lot, I've heard.

It's not unusual.

I'm really sorry. I liked your mother a lot.

Thanks.

Ma thought highly of you, too.

In fact, I heard from her just before she died.

She said that she had given you a letter,

and that you didn't need to keep it anymore,

and that I should have it.

In fact, she made me promise to tell you

to give it to me, and not to, um...

Uh, Gary.

May we gather together in the name of the Lord.

What are they doing here?

As we mourn the passing of the dearly departed

Sylvia Josephine Lean, beloved mother,

let us not forget.

I am the resurrection and the life.

He that believeth in me, though he were dead...

Oh, really, there's the eagle, can you see the eagle?

-[Val] Hi. -Hi.

-I'm so sorry about your mother. -Oh, thank you very much.

She was very proud of you.

Yes.

[Gary] Honey, I didn't expect to see you here, but,

um, I guess you were friends with Sylvia, huh?

Yeah, I got to know her when she stayed at the ranch.

Hmm.

Well, you must have known her, too.

She talked about you. And...

I want to thank you both for coming, Gary, Jill.

Olivia, can I talk to you for a minute?

Hmm?

Excuse us.

My mother said you were going to get

someone else to work with you.

Yeah, well, I still need you to help me.

Have a seat.

I still need you to help me.

[sighs]

Olivia, what about my mother's letter?

I don't know.

What's the matter?

Don't you trust me?

Don't you...

care about me?

The way that...

that...

that I care about you?

Well, it was very nice to have met you.

Greg, I was so sorry to hear about Sylvia.

Of course you were.

Where's Senator Hollister?

Well, he's around here somewhere.

[tense music plays]

You go to my office, and you wait for me there.

-Abby. -Not a word. Not one word.

-Abby. -I warned you.

Well, that went very well, I thought.

Your brother is out of hand.

Excuse us, please.

And out of line with my daughter.

-Olivia? -Yeah.

And either you get your brother back in line,

or I will go to the press with proof

that he is not your brother.

[dramatic music plays]

-Are you nuts? -Nothing happened.

Then why is Abby so angry?

I don't know. She's just overprotective.

-I don't know. -I doubt that.

Listen, you go out to the ranch, and wait for me.

Stay away from Laura, and don't touch anything.

You don't think I'd claim Peter as a brother

-unless I had to, do you? -Oh, come on, Greg.

This is no joke.

Before Sylvia left, she gave her attorney a letter

that states unequivocally

that Peter Hollister is not her son.

And, therefore, not a Galveston heir.

How do you know what's in that letter?

We happen to have the same lawyer.

Oh, just a coincidence, eh?

Sylvia told me the truth a long time ago.

The letter just serves as proof.

The fact is that Peter Hollister is not your brother.

The whole thing was a hoax right from the very beginning.

I knew that.

I've always known that Peter wasn't my brother.

I never had a brother.

Well, it doesn't really matter what you know

and what you don't know, does it?

Because the important thing is what the public

will think when I go to the press with valid proof

that Senator Peter Hollister is a fraud.

His career will be over, like that.

I believe you.

But I don't believe that you would do that.

-Don't dare me. -It's not a dare.

It's an assessment of your practical nature.

Peter benefits the both of us.

You gain money, I gain power.

Things we both love.

So why don't we just keep all of this a secret

between the two of us, and I'll make sure

that Peter stays away from Olivia.

Make damn sure.
