[intriguing music playing]

Where are we going?

Just driving.

Towards your apartment?

[Peter] No. [chuckling]

Well, uh, I don't live too far from here.

Awfully sure of yourself.

[Peter] Uh... No.

Not at all.

Not around you anyway.

Well, I'd better be getting home.

Uh-huh.

[sighing]

[sighing]

[thudding]

[knocking]

Michael?

What?

Michael? Are you all right?

I-- I heard a noise.

Yeah, I ju-- I just dropped my book.

-Good night. -Good night.

[sighing]

[thudding]

[knocking]

Paige?

[instrumental music playing]

[keys clinking]

Don't you mind living with your dad?

Does that kind of, uh, limit your activities?

It doesn't stop me from doing anything I really want to do.

[instrumental music playing]

[door clicks open]

-We had a date. -Oh, I know, Michael.

Well, I tried to call you at the theater,

but all I got was a recorded message.

I'm really sorry.

-Was the movie good? -I didn't go.

Oh, you should have.

Well, I'm really sorry, but I didn't have any fun either.

I was stuck at the telex office for hours,

taking care of some stupid business transactions on the continent.

In the middle of the night?

Well, it was the time difference.

Those European banks are horrible.

I hate them.

[Michael sighing]

Oh, you're not mad at me?

No, I'm not mad.

Come here.

How can I be mad at you? I love you.

No, Michael, stop.

Paige, you're all I ever think about.

All I want to do is be with you all the time.

This is the best thing that's ever happened to me.

Paige...

Look, Michael-- No!

No, not here, not in this house.

But I love you.

Look, we can't live in the same house as my father and your mother

and have that kind of relationship.

We just can't.

[sighing]

[Karen] I wanted to drop these off for the twins.

Oh, Karen, that's so sweet of you.

I have to finish wrapping this before they wake up.

-Uh-huh. -But there's a fresh pot of tea in the kitchen.

Oh, no, no, no.

I'm just-- I'm leaving. I'm going to go to work.

-Oh. -So Val's not here, huh?

No, she's Christmas shopping.

Oh, don't you love it when everybody catches the holiday spirit?

Well, we haven't caught the holiday spirit at our house.

Everybody's acting as if they have...

cabin fever or something.

Oh, you don't get cabin fever when the weather's this nice.

Oh, whatever's causing it.

Well, I suppose it's only natural

that you all feel pressure from a stranger moving in.

-Paige? -[Lilimae] Mm.

Well, you can't exactly call her a stranger.

No... Well, I suppose technically not.

I know I'd have difficulty.

But maybe that's just me.

Well, uh, could be.

Actually, I am worried.

Thanksgiving went by, and she didn't even call her grandparents.

And here it is, the holidays already,

and she hasn't even mentioned them.

She hasn't sent them a card or a gift

or anything as far as I know.

I mean, I'm not suspicious, but--

-Of course you're not. -I am suspicious.

Isn't that terrible?

When you're dealing with a dishonest person,

-you tend to suspect everything. -You still think she's dishonest?

Why do you suppose Paige hasn't called her grandparents?

-[Karen] I... -Well? Maybe she hates them.

-Maybe she's a runaway. -I-- I...

If I were you, I would just pick up the phone and call them.

Call them? Mack would just-- he'd--

Karen, I'm a grandmother,

and I know I would be worried sick

if I didn't know how my grandchildren were.

I couldn't call them, Lilimae.

I absolutely could not do it.

Well, you know best, I'm sure.

[birds chirping]

-[operator] What city, please? -Glen Cove.

-[operator] Thank you. -Winston.

W-I-N-S-T-O-N. Russell B.

[operator] 555-6910.

[Eric] Mack, why does he have to go if he doesn't want to go?

[Mack] Oh, because I say so.

That's the end of that discussion.

Why is that the end of the discussion?

Because I say so.

Because you say so.

That's the way it is in this family.

-Everything's because you say so. -That's right.

Well, I say I don't want to go to the Lotus Point Christmas party.

Hey, let me spell this out to you in one breath.

Maybe I don't want to go to the Christmas party either,

but there are certain things we got to do around here.

We're going to do them as a family, we're going to do them together.

You're going to the party, he's going to the party,

and I'm going to the party.

We're going to have a good damn time.

[Christmas music playing]

[Greg] h*-h*-h*.

This is a really stupid idea, you know that?

-Very stupid. -What are you talking about?

This is a great idea.

I never get invited to these Lotus Point shindigs.

After all, you work here,

you own the place, and I am your husband.

Let's not remind anyone tonight that we're married, okay?

I deserve to play Santa Claus here.

I gave them all a great Christmas present: I cleaned up the water.

h*, h*, h*, h*, h*, h*!

There's a likely prospect.

You look like you've been a good boy this year.

h*, h*, h*, h*, h*, h*!

And let's see what we have for the boss lady.

Hi, Laura.

h*, h*, I'm Santa Claus,

and you've been... such a good girl this year, you get a present.

-h*, h*, h*, h*, h*! -Laura!

[chuckling]

[Greg] h*, h*, h*, h*, h*, h*, little boy.

h*, h*, h*. Merry Christmas. Merry Christmas.

-Abby? -[chuckling] What?

Who invited him?

Senator Hollister? I did.

It's just good public relations.

[indistinct guest chatter]

[Greg] h*, h*, h*, h*, h*, h*.

Hi, honey.

Oh, punch. Well, I'll have one.

You can have them both.

[Greg] h*, h*, h*. Merry Christmas. Merry Christmas.

They really went all out, didn't they?

I love it.

Oh, boy. [sighing]

Well, there's the Wicked Witch of the West.

No time like the present, I guess.

No, no, no. Are you sure you want to tell her tonight?

I mean, you're just going to give up

your whole career in journalism.

I made my decision. Let's just go with that.

I just think that you should be writing about people

like Greg Sumner and not working for him.

But to quit working for a woman like that

is worth about three careers in journalism to me.

Okay. I-- I guess I was just taught not to burn any bridges.

Yeah, well, when she's at the other end of the bridge,

-it kind of feels good. -[Val chuckling]

Okay. I just want you to know, then, whatever you do,

I will love you.

And whatever I do will be right.

I'll meet you for milk and cookies in five minutes.

You're missing the party.

Give me a break.

Why don't you go?

You should get out of here and enjoy yourself.

I'm enjoying myself here. Thank you very much.

Well, I am bored stiff.

There is nothing on television.

I have read every magazine twice.

There you go. Easy.

Well, I'll get you some more, then.

No, I don't want any more.

You know, when you were in the hospital,

we had something interesting to do.

[laughing]

We can't. Uh, not until you get better.

I know.

That's the problem.

Hm.

Career move? Hell...

Greg Sumner's figured out a way to take advantage of you,

and you've figured out a way to take advantage of him.

So?

You could take advantage of me with a counteroffer.

More money?

That's something I could take advantage of.

And I always thought journalists were motivated by

love of the truth.

You sound like someone who doesn't want to offer more money.

Well, you've always had a free hand working for me.

-Not always. -Ben.

If you sell out to Greg Sumner,

what are you going to do with your self-righteous attitude?

You could borrow it.

Do you think you could ever use it?

I had somebody else in mind for press secretary.

Jill Bennett, maybe?

I don't want Ben Gibson on my staff.

-I do. -I won't work with him.

Listen, to paraphrase the great Henry Ford, Peter,

you can have any press secretary you want, just as long as it's Ben Gibson.

Looking forward to working with you.

No. No, you mean you're looking forward to working for my brother.

A toast, Mr. Press Secretary.

You're damn right.

[Greg] h*, h*, h*, h*, h*, h*.

[Paige chuckling]

-That's so pretty. -Oh, it was Mother's.

I know. I sent it to her.

-This one? -Yeah.

Are you sure?

-Does it say AW on the back? -Well, yes, but--

[Mack] Anne Winston.

I sent that to her while she was still Winston.

That's the first time I knew that she got it.

Let's sit down.

So they forwarded that after all, huh?

I guess they forwarded all my letters

because none of them were ever returned.

I always wondered about that.

Well, my grandparents wouldn't let her write to you.

Oh, I know what the Winstons could be like.

Paige, you don't think that your mother could sneak

one letter past her parents if she really wanted to?

Her parents were awful, Mack.

You can't blame her for the way they acted.

I'm not blaming her. I'm not. No.

But in the letter that you gave me,

it sounds like she blamed me for not finding her.

She had to realize I had no way of finding her.

Well, maybe she was depressed when she wrote that letter.

You believe I tried everything I could to find her, don't you?

Who, me?

Yeah. Yeah, I'm sure you did.

[bell tolling]

-Look, it was a stupid idea. -It was a great idea.

She's got an account here. I know!

Taxi! What?

And you thought they would give her your forwarding address?

How do you know she even has one?

My letters aren't coming back.

Maybe they're burning your letters.

Go to hell.

Oh, well, I'm very sorry.

I mean, excuse me for being a realist.

Excuse me for knowing that a mean old department store

wouldn't hand out Little Miss Winston's new address

because you want to spend good money on some jewelry for her.

Jewelry, man.

Jewelry for a Winston? Talk about coals to Newcastle.

Okay, it was a stupid idea.

Look, you gotta get over her, man.

You're gonna miss out on the rest of your life.

I mean, how many months has she been gone now?

Shut up.

[siren wailing]

God, I hate Christmas.

[Michael] God, I hate Christmas.

[Eric] So what happened? She leave without telling you?

What's it to you?

It's time to grow up, little brother.

Like you?

She stood you up last night.

-She had a reason. -I heard.

I'm surprised everyone else hasn't heard

the way you two carried on out in the hallway.

[high voice] "I had to telex my horrible European bank. I just hate them."

Go to hell, Eric.

Hey, there's an eight-hour time difference

between here and most of Europe.

Do some arithmetic and then find out

how many horrible European banks are open for business at four in the morning.

Yeah, well, if she did lie, it's because Mom and Mack

make her so crazy, she has to lie.

Mom and Mack?

Yeah, they've got her so spooked,

she won't even go to a movie with me.

Michael, if Paige wanted to see you again,

she'd find a way to do it, no matter what Mom and Mack--

She doesn't want to hurt their feelings.

Like hell she doesn't want to hurt their feelings.

She's just using them as an excuse.

And you're buying it, Michael,

just like you're buying everything else she's saying.

You know so much.

I know that she's the one that's treating you like a kid, not Mom and Mack.

Look at the way she was hanging all over Peter Hollister to--

I don't know.

Oh, here they are. They're right here.

-Oh, will you, Mack? -Yep.

-What about Paige? -What about Paige?

You're gonna suggest that she move out?

Well, no, I-- I'm not suggesting that anybody move out.

It's just that I don't-- I don't know what she's doing with her life.

I mean, she's not-- she's not working, and she doesn't go to college.

Come on, Karen, after all that she's been through, huh? Can you blame her?

Well...

After a while, yes.

Karen, can we-- can we, you know, can we just

let her ride for a while till after the holidays, huh?

Okay.

But I called the Winstons to, uh...

You did what?

Actually, I left a message for them.

You called the Winstons?

Yeah, I thought they had a right to know

-what was happening with their granddaughter. -They're the last people

in the world that I would want to talk to.

They have no right to even talk to me or any member

-of my family. -Paige is their granddaughter, Mack.

Karen, you have no right to call them. After what they did to me?

Come on! Did it ever occur to you that if they had interfered,

I would have married Anne, raised Paige properly,

and you wouldn't be in this mess today here with me?

[Karen] Mack...

[phone ringing]

[Paige] I think it's a good idea.

[Michael] Really?

Yeah, I think you should get your own apartment,

if you're ready for it.

Look, I'm going to look for some more apartments tomorrow.

Why don't you come with me?

Oh, I'd like to, Michael, but I promised to help Val with the twins.

I'm going to be busy all day.

All right, well, um, I'll look for an apartment you like.

[Karen] Time to trim the tree!

-[singing] Fa la la la la... -[Mack] Let's go, we're ready.

-We need to do this quick. -[Karen] Let's sing, Mack.

[Karen and Mack singing] La la la la la la...

-'Tis the season... -To be jolly...

Well, it's... it's crooked, honey.

Nah, nah, here, here.

-You're just not looking at it from the right angle here. -It's a little...

-La la la... -Well, here. Just-- See?

-Oh... -There it is.

-[Mack] There we go. -Yeah, that's the ticket. Hey, that's the ticket.

We're going to do this neat this year.

[Mack] Let's get the show on the road.

-Why, spoil all the fun? -[Karen and Mack laughing]

Michael, where are you going?

-Don't you want to stay? -I've got some stuff to do.

[Paige] Oh, come on, Michael, we need you.

[Mack] Come on, Mike, grab something.

Let's get this on.

[Paige] Here, should we put the lights on the tree?

-Here, let's put the lights on. -Huh?

And Big Brother wants to tell me who to hire,

what to say, how to dress, how to vote.

All I ever seem to get is free advice that I don't want.

Why should I take your advice?

Why should I trust you?

Why should I even let you into my apartment?

Oh, well, number one, I have more experience than you do,

and number two, I'm the only one you can trust.

And as to why you should let me in your apartment...

[sensual music playing]

Do you really have to ask?

Okay, we're going to sing another song, guys.

[Michael] Oh, not another song.

-No, Mack. -Come on, Mac, we've covered your entire

repertoire with the exception of 99 bottles of beer on the wall.

That's a nice song, but it's not a Christmas song.

-She's pregnant! -Yeah!

[honking]

-Olivia! -Hi!

-Driving? -Hey, look at you!

-What is this? -Look what I got for Christmas.

-Christmas present? -[Olivia] Mine.

-h*, h*, h*! -Gorgeous!

[Karen] h*, h*, h*.

-[Valene] Gorgeous! -[Olivia chuckling]

You must be thrilled!

Look at this, kids!

-[Lilimae indistinct] -Merry Christmas!

Does anyone want to go for a drive?

As a matter of fact, there's something I forgot to get for the kids.

Mama, come on. They already have too many Christmas presents.

Oh, come on. It is Christmas, and I am their grandma.

-Come on. -[Lilimae] Come on, let's go!

Here, let me get that for you.

Thank you.

-God, it's beautiful! -[Olivia] You ready?

[Lilimae] Oh, yeah.

-[engine starting] -Have fun!

[Lilimae] Bye, everybody!

Bye-bye!

[honking]

[Karen chuckling]

Honey? Hi.

What you got there, Michael?

Christmas present for mom, I bet.

[Michael scoffing]

Yeah?

[Val humming]

What is going on?

Well, whatever Paige set out to do,

she's had an awful effect on our family.

We're just fighting.

-I'm suspicious. -Well, what happened?

What happened is, she showed up.

What happened is she's dishonest,

and what happened is I called her grandparents.

So what?

So Mack was furious at me for it.

Paige cried herself to sleep, and...

Michael blames me for everything that's wrong with his life. And...

He's ready to move out.

So it sounds like it's you and Eric and a lot of Christmas cookies.

[Val humming]

-[both laughing] -[Valene] You silly.

[Michael sighing]

"To Paige, with love, from Michael."

-It's nice. -Yeah, it's stupid.

You mean stupid. You were right.

I was stupid.

It's not the end of the world.

[sighing] Sure feels like it.

So you learned something.

About what?

About life.

[sighing]

I don't like what I learned.

[instrumental music playing]

[crickets chirping]

Merry Christmas.

I don't get it.

I'm pregnant. Dummy.

Not a good idea.

-Michael? -Yeah?

Did you find an apartment yet?

Not yet.

Can't say I'm sorry about that.

-Michael? -Hmm?

-[phone ringing] -Why don't you stay until after the holidays?

Why don't I just stay?

[Mack] MacKenzie residence.

I'd like that.

[Mack] Hold on a second.

Karen, it's for you.

[laughing]

Hello?

This is Russell Winston, returning your call.

Oh, um, Mr. Winston...

Do I know you, Miss MacKenzie?

Or is it Mrs.?

It-- It's Mrs., and no, you don't know me.

It-- It's not Mrs. Mack MacKenzie, is it?

Well, yes, it is.

Didn't you call here earlier?

Yes, I did, but I was cut off before I could speak.

What can I do for you?

You didn't talk to your granddaughter?

What?

Paige.

Didn't she explain to you that she was staying here?

You're a sick person, Mrs. MacKenzie,

and this is a sick joke.

Paige is dead.

What?

My granddaughter is dead.

[dramatic music playing]

[upbeat music playing in car]

[tires screeching]

Could we slow down a little, please?

You don't think I know how to handle this thing? Watch.

[tires screeching]

Please, Olivia, for my sake.

Relax. You're safe.

I know what I'm doing. I'm in control.

Please slow down and turn down that music.

It's not your kind of music here.

[honking]

Olivia, this is not like you.

Olivia!

[tires screeching]

[screaming]

[theme music playing]
