[theme music]

[Karen] It seems to me

we've had this conversation before,

but you were preoccupied going after the wrong man.

Mrs. MacKenzie...

please try to understand my position.

Please try to understand mine.

Alright, now, we know the car she drives,

we know the license plate number,

and we know what she was wearing when she left.

I told you, she could be wearing anything.

You see was... She took all her clothes with her.

Well, we still need to know her driver's license number

and credit cards.

I'll get all that. I'll have that.

And anything she might have said.

Mrs. MacKenzie, it's very important.

-Then what? -And then we can put out an APB.

What's that?

-That's it? -For now.

[doorbell rings]

Oh, I'll get it.

That's all you're gonna do, put out an APB?

Mac, that's the standard procedure.

Why? What's an APB?

Oh, I heard you were here.

Now, I wanna help any way I can.

Oh, Mrs. Clements, yes, you can.

I need to know the exact time you saw Chip.

I think it was just before he left.

Now, I heard him on the phone to the airlines

makin' reservations,

and-and then he came and gave me this pen.

Did you hear the conversation?

Did you, did you hear where he was going?

Did you hear what name he used?

[gasps] You know, I can't remember.

But he-he gave me this pen.

How is this gonna help? They took off in her car.

Mrs. MacKenzie,

if we can find out their location,

or even their destination, it will help.

Diana always talks about going to New York.

Yeah, we have an uncle there, Uncle Joe.

Wherever they've gone, they've crossed the state lines,

and I'll open communications with the FBI.

Mack, an APB will do the same.

[screams] What is an APB?

Karen, Karen, it means an all-points bulletin.

They are Mimeo flyers that are sent to police stations

headed in the direction of a suspect.

[Janet] But in this case, we don't know the direction.

So we'll gather all the information

we can on Chip Roberts,

Tony Finece, and a complete description,

everything we can gather on your daughter,

and flyers will be sent to sample cities.

He's a suspected m*rder*r, and he's got my daughter,

and all you can do is send out some flyers?

I'm sorry, that's the procedure we've--

It's not enough!

Karen, we've got to let them do their jobs.

But even you said it wasn't enough!

Can't you do something, Mack?

Somebody's got to do something!

Somebody's got to do something, Mack!

Somebody's got to do something!

[seagulls calling]

[instrumental music]

Gary, don't.

Just trying to decide

whether to pour it down the drain or leave it.

I think I'll leave it.

What's the matter? Don't you trust me?

Yeah, I trust you.

But you thought I was going to get drunk, right?

Hey, come on. Give me a break.

After all that's happened,

you can't blame me for being absurd.

No, of course not. Nobody can blame you for anything.

Gary. Please.

I'm just happy that you're home again.

Is that why you fired Mitch Casey,

to get me home soon?

-Gary! -Is it?

Look, I told you the absolute truth about that.

Mitch Casey wasn't interested in you.

All he was interested in was winning.

Uh-huh, right.

If he cared about me, he'd let me rot in jail.

That's right. Rather than get you out of jail

and have you head for the nearest bar,

which is what you told me you would do.

I told you a lot of things.

Oh, but you made that one crystal clear.

Remember, "Abby, more than anything in the world,

I want a drink."

And believe me, Gary, you meant it.

There was sincerity in your voice.

Real, honest sincerity.

And it was scary.

So you tell me, what was I supposed to do?

Not believe you?

[Gary] Why is it you're so good at coming up with excuses?

[Abby] Tell me! What was I supposed to do?

Don't ask!

Gary.

I love you.

I couldn't just stand by and watch you k*ll yourself,

which is what you were going to do.

Abby.

I'm not saying Mitch Casey is a bad lawyer.

He's not. He's a good lawyer.

But you were in no condition to do any--

-Abby. -What?

I didn't even know your kids were up.

Come on, kids, let's go for a walk.

-I'll go with you. -No.

Hey.

-Hi. -Well, hi.

What are you doin' here?

I run here every day.

-I live right back here. -Oh, no kidding.

-You mind if I run with you? -No, of course not.

Great.

I just love running by the water. Don't you?

Oh, yeah.

-It's so beautiful. -Yeah.

-The air's so good. -Yeah.

How long you been runnin'?

Well, I'm down the beach back a couple mile.

No, no. I mean overall. How long?

I don't know.

It seems like all my life.

-It's a great exercise, though. -Yeah, I know.

Yeah, I just love it.

-Oh, God. -Oh, wait.

You alright?

Yeah, I'm fine.

-Here. Lemme see this... -Ow!

Ooh.

Well, it might be a sprain,

but you probably just pulled something.

[panting]

You know, there's got to be a better way than this.

Doing what? Exercising?

Getting to know you.

You don't usually jog here at all, do you?

Would you have dinner with me?

Let's just see if you can walk first.

Come on. Come on.

Ow!

Alright, now, don't put any weight on it.

We'll just take you back to your house,

put some ice on it.

I asked you a question.

No, would you cut it out and just lean on me, understand?

I've got a call on hold.

Let me give you a call in about 15 minutes.

Ellen. Yeah, sorry. Thanks for waiting.

I wanna put a spot on the news covering the disappearance

of Tony Fenice and Diana Fairgate.

Ellen, I wouldn't ask unless it was important.

Jim, wait a minute.

Let me put you on hold another minute.

Jim, I need a favor.

I want some computer tracking done.

I want to put a flag on all of Diana's credit cards.

Well, that'll only work on transactions

that require verification.

Usually purchases of at least $50.

I don't care. If we do that,

plus all the flyers going to all those gas stations,

then we may come up with somethin'.

-Will do. -Wait a minute.

Thanks a lot. I owe you one.

No problem.

Ellen, I want to offer a reward for any information

leading to the, to the arrest of Tony Fenice.

Ellen, please.

It's more urgent than anything you have on the schedule.

It's my wife's daughter. Besides, you owe me one.

Alright, I owe you two.

You're a sweetheart. I won't forget it.

Thank you.

[intense music]

[Chip] Diana, this is such a beautiful country.

[Diana] You've been saying that ever since we left California.

[Chip] I can't help, but I've never seen it before.

-[Diana] Chip. -[Chip] What?

[Diana] Look at that cow. The one by the fence.

[both laughing]

[Diana] This is the perfect way to see the country.

Knock, knock.

Knock, knock, Gary.

Gary.

Oh, I'm sorry. Who's there?

-Abadab. -Abadab who?

Abadab who gets you the taxi, hun.

That's awful.

Tell him the one about what you get

when you mix a vampire with a 300-pound gorilla.

No, don't.

That's the one thing I didn't miss in jail

was Brian's terrible jokes.

What was it like in jail?

-Brian. -Not fun.

You both got to do everything you can to be good

and not break any laws so you never have to go to jail.

Did you break the law?

Well, they thought I might have.

Then they decided I didn't, so they let me go.

In school, they call you a jailbird.

Brian, that's not a nice thing to say.

They say it to me.

Look, uh...

you two have been through a lot lately.

You've-you've had to see a lot of things

and hear a lot of things

you shouldn't have to know anything about.

I'm sorry.

Did you k*ll Ciji?

No, I didn't.

Are you gonna get drunk again?

Not today.

He's an alcoholic. He can't help himself.

Well, that's not necessarily true, Olivia.

There are places that alcoholics can go to get help.

But I'm gonna do everything I can

to make sure neither one of you

have to go through anything like this again.

Are you still gonna live with our mom and us?

Your mother and I

have some things we have to work out.

But we wanna be together.

And if we can find a way to do it, we will.

So, what do you get

when you mix a 300-pound gorilla with a vampire?

As far away, as fast as you can.

[all laughing]

That's awful.

Come on, I'll race you back to the house. Go! Go!

[Karen] The police were here this morning.

It just gets me so angry

that they waited so long to do anything.

Oh, Mack's been great.

No. No, Joe, I-I don't want you to come out here.

Diana says she wants to go to New York.

I just want you to stay there in case she tries to reach you.

[doorbell rings]

Oh, somebody's at the door.

I-I do, too. Bye.

Turkey Tetrazzini.

I must have cooked up a ton of it.

Last thing you need now is to worry about cookin'.

Well, that's very thoughtful of you, Lilimae.

-Here, why don't you get... -No, no, I don't mind.

-Oh. Ah! -Lilimae.

Oh, I'm sorry.

Well, I'll clean it up.

-No, let me do that. -No, no, no, let me now.

Why should you clean up my mess?

Leave it!

[instrumental music]

I-I'm sorry.

This is all my fault.

Oh, no, of course it's not your fault.

Yes, it is. If it hadn't been for me,

Chip never would have moved into the cul-de-sac.

Nobody's blaming you, Lilimae.

I defended him

when everybody else was against him.

I let him talk me into coverin' up for his lies.

Yes, Lilimae, I...

Now, I still don't think he's a m*rder*r.

And I can't help feelin' if it wasn't for me,

Diana would be with you today.

[somber music]

-Did they have diet? -Yes.

-And I got some stamps too. -Great.

Did you write your mom

about our night in the Venus Suite

of the Valentine Motel?

I'm sure.

[chuckles] Now, she and Mack would love the jacuzzi.

Heart-shaped water bed?

Closed-circuit TV?

My mother would rather be buried alive

than be caught in a place like that.

Can I have a stamp?

Here. I'll mail it.

-Got a letter for Lilimae. -Oh, great.

Be right back.

[honking]

[somber music]

[somber music]

[Ben] It's a model of a 19th century clipper ship

carved from an elephant tusk.

[Val] An elephant tusk?

[Ben] I found it in a bazaar in Sierra Leone

on the west coast of Africa.

[Val] Oh. And this?

That's a femur.

It's a sacred Tibetan trumpet.

It is used by a lot of the monks

for the religious ceremonies over there.

Yeah, its music is... exotic.

It's-It's eerie.

It's beautiful. It's like a Gregorian chant.

It looks like it's made out of bone.

Uh-huh. It's a human leg bone.

Well, it's, uh, it's very unusual.

I had to smuggle it to get it out of Southeast Asia.

Uh-huh. So you're a smuggler, huh?

Somehow you don't strike me as a criminal type.

Actually, I have been a pack rat

for about as long as I can remember.

What do you do?

Uh, some writing, research. Uh...

Actually, right now,

I'm in what you would call a state of transition.

I-I'm sorry. I didn't mean to pry.

Oh, no, no, don't apologize.

I'm almost afraid to ask about this one.

Irish shillelagh.

A what?

Irish shillelagh.

Yeah, which you picked up in Ireland.

In Ireland, yes, I did. I have been to Ireland.

-Oh, yeah, you have? -I've been around the world.

-Oh. -[chuckles] Yeah.

As a matter of fact, all through my 20s,

I knocked around the world

searching for something, I guess.

What?

For... For...

Uh, for adventure, for experience...

-For fun. -Okay.

I either lived out of a cardboard box

or a suitcase,

and, uh, and now it's nice to have a home.

This place here feels like home, huh?

Way better,

'cause I'm real tired of movin' around.

Yeah. Yeah, I'd like to settle down.

Well, it's a good thing,

'cause this is gonna slow you down a bit.

I better get goin'.

Mrs. Ewing.

May I pick you up about 7 o'clock?

Alright.

You know, you love Ciji. You never could have k*lled her.

Yeah. It was the not rememberin' that tore me apart.

Gary, I know you, and I knew her.

I know how you felt about each other.

I don't care how drunk you were.

You wouldn't have k*lled her any more than I would.

-I guess you miss her, too, huh? -Mm-hmm.

You really think Richard k*lled her?

I know that Richard k*lled her.

I can't want anyone to believe me.

They're wastin' their time chasing after you,

chasing after Chip.

They should be going after Richard.

Don't you have any idea where he is?

[exhales] No.

So, Mr. Ewing, is this what you had in mind?

[chuckles] Yeah, yeah.

It's great. I love the stable.

-The stable's terrific. Yeah. -Yeah.

You've also got, of course, a pool,

a gym, an aviary.

-An aviary? For-For birds? -Uh-huh. Yes. Yes.

And it's a working ranch,

so you can generate enough income to pay for it.

I always wanted to raise horses. Quarter horses.

Well, this would be a perfect place.

[chuckles]

And it's near schools.

There's a shopping center nearby.

And the terms are great.

Okay, what's the catch?

You have to be at Ewing to afford it.

Oh, clean air, no smog. Cities.

What is it do people see in cities anyway?

I don't know. Ciji...

Ciji said there was always safety in numbers.

Ciji, boy.

I sure think about her a lot.

Yeah, me too.

If you'd like, we could have the boys over tonight.

Mama would love to fix them dinner.

You know, to get them out of your hair.

Thank you. I-I might take you up on that.

[sighs] They make these boxes all wrong.

Cutting edge never works.

Here, come here, Karen. Let me do it, let me do it.

Oh, forget it.

I'll just throw the whole thing away

before I lose my sanity.

Hey, hey, hey, hey.

I just...

It's this waiting. I-I can't stand it.

I just keep...

[sighs] ...wondering if she's hurt.

I keep thinking about Ciji.

Oh.

Val, just... talk to me, okay?

Just... Just tell me anything

to keep my mind off myself.

Okay. Alright. How about this?

I saw Ben today while I was running to the beach.

He-He's the one that saved you from the reporters, right?

Right.

There's just... there's something about him.

He's, um, he's easy.

He's easy to talk to.

So we're, uh... we're gonna have dinner tonight.

I forgot who I was calling.

Oh, Val, I'm just coming up for it.

-Karen! -We're in here, Mack.

Karen, turn around and look at me. Come here.

You are going to be alright. Do you hear me?

You're gonna get through this. You know you are.

[Mack] Hey, Val, Karen. Now, I've got some good news.

Now, I spoke to a friend of mine downtown today,

and he's gonna get the police

to wiretap the phones this afternoon.

This way, if Diana calls, we'll be able to trace her.

Oh, Mack, thank you.

[laughing]

She'll call.

-I know she'll call. -Yeah, she'll call.

[telephone ringing]

Hello?

-Honey, I'll take that. -Hello?

-Is Mrs. Bluessall upstairs? -Yeah, mom.

-Hello? -There's nobody there.

Hello?

Richard, is that you?

Richard, answer me, damn it.

Are you tired?

Oh, you know, mom probably flipped out

when she found I was gone.

I bet she's worried sick.

You sent her a letter, right?

I'm sure she knows you're okay.

I guess so.

Maybe I should call, though, huh?

You can't stay tied to your mother forever.

Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.

We're starting a whole new life together, right?

This should be the happiest time for us.

Okay, that'll be $8.71.

Oh, why don't you put it on the card, okay?

No, no, no, I've got a 20 in the car.

Just put it on the card.

Sure.

Thank you.

Diana, I told you I'd pay for it myself.

You can pay for the next tank, honey.

I wanted this to be my treat.

Your mom gets the bill.

If you think she's upset because you left with me,

what if she finds out she's paying for our trip?

I didn't know you felt like that.

I won't do it again, I promise.

It's a little late for that now.

This stuff isn't as complicated as it seems.

This is a squawk box.

Uh, when it's attached,

we can hear what's being said by whoever calls.

The most important thing to remember, though,

is when your daughter calls,

is to keep her on the line as long as you possibly can.

I, uh, I saw a police car outside.

-Is everything alright? -Yes, Laura, everything's fine.

We're just putting a tracer on the phone

in case Diana calls.

Oh, you can do that?

I'd, uh...

Excuse me, I'd like on of those on my phone too.

This is only done in an emergency situation.

Well, this is an emergency situation.

My husband's also a suspect. He called me today.

He did? What did he say?

He didn't say anything, but I know it was him.

Laura, my daughter's life is in danger

and your obsession with Richard is doing nothing,

but distracting the police!

I am not distracting the police.

[telephone ringing]

Don't pick it up.

Just talk.

Hello?

[Charlie] Just checking the system.

- How's that, Al? -Okay, Charlie .

[man on TV] The bill will be sent

to the Republican controlled Senate

within the next few weeks

where it is not expected to pass .

In other news

the police are making a plea for any information

leading to the apprehension

of this man Tony Fenice alias Chip Roberts

is wanted for questioning in California

in connection with the m*rder of singer Ciji Dunne.

He's also wanted on charges of as*ault and battery

in Washington State.

Fenice was found to be in contempt of court

when he was subpoenaed and failed to appear

at the hearing of Gary Ewing for the m*rder of Miss Dunne.

Mr. Fenice is considered extremely dangerous

and should be treated with caution.

In other news, legislatures in Albuquerque

on to express skepticism that county officials...

-How is it? -Nothing

...fifty million in state aid.

Recent cutbacks in educational funding on a national level

was cited as the chief reason.

A combination of heavy rainfall...

-Are you gonna watch the news? -No.

Um, I-I-I mean yes.

They had a thing about, uh, baby seals,

and I got kind of frightened.

Come here.

You're not afraid of me, are you?

No, of course not.

Good.

Because now that we're together, I'm never gonna let you go.

Mm... Must be a pretty important fella.

He's very nice, mama. You'll like him.

What a pretty dress. Where's he from?

I don't know. He didn't say.

Oh, is he tall, dark, fair?

Well, you'll see him when he gets here, mama.

What does he do?

Uh, some kind of research or something.

What kind of research?

-Well, he didn't say. -Scientific research?

No, I-I don't think so.

Medical? Historical?

Mama, I don't know. I didn't ask.

I didn't wanna pry.

Well, it seems like you have a right to know, Valene.

I mean, you can't be too careful about people these days.

I know I'm more careful. Oh, this might be nice.

-Ooh! -Oh, mama, please.

[doorbell rings]

Would you go get the door, please?

-Mm-hmm. -Thank you.

[doorbell rings]

Oh, I-I'm Val's,ama, Lilimae Clements.

I'm Ben Gibson.

Oh, well.

Um, Val will be right down. You wanna come in here?

Mrs. MacKenzie, would it be too much trouble

to get something cold to drink? Soda or something?

Oh, um, no, not at all.

Can I get you a beer?

Uh, not while we're on duty. Soda's fine.

Oh, we're all out.

Um, okay.

I'll make you some iced tea.

I don't wanna be any trouble. A glass of water's fine.

Well, no, it's no trouble at all.

They were out of barbecue chicken.

Yes, we just got the spare ribs instead.

Oh, just, uh, put it in the oven.

And, uh, when it's warm, we'll eat.

I forgot to get you something.

Eric, honey, uh, would you go back to the store

and, uh, just pick up--

Mrs. MacKenzie, please don't worry about us.

-Oh, no, it's really. -That's it. It's federal.

They've crossed the state line. The FBI's on it now.

Oh, Mack.

The iced tea. Oh.

Mom, you want me to finish the salad?

[sighs] Yeah, thank you.

Please don't worry about the iced tea, Mrs. MacKenzie.

-I'll get a glass of water. -Let me...

[telephone ringing]

-What should I do? -Take it in the living room.

Answer the phone normally.

And remember, it's very important,

if it's your daughter, keep her on the line

for five minutes if possible.

[ringing continues]

Hello?

[Melanie] Hello, Mrs. Fairgate.

It's Melanie at the Westside Boutique.

I-I'm sorry, Melanie. I can't talk right now.

I just wanted you to know the suit you ordered is in.

-You can pick it up any time. -Thank you, Melanie.

No problem.

And tell Diana I just got some new things in she'll love.

Goodbye, Melanie.

Hope to see you soon.

You all set?

Fluff my pillow.

There you are.

-You want him? -No.

Honey, when you took a walk with Gary on the beach today,

did he say anything about where he was going

or what he was gonna do today?

No. We just talked about his being in jail

and about drinking.

I think he feels bad.

Why, did he say that?

No.

It just seems he's so sad.

Do you think he's drunk again?

No.

He's been gone all day, and he still isn't home tonight.

I know, but, honey, I think Gary has some things

he has to work out for himself.

I think he's gonna be okay, though.

I hope so.

There you go.

-You ready? -Yes. I'll have the steaks.

Diana?

-I'm not very hungry. -You should eat something.

I'll have a cheeseburger.

Okey-doke.

Thank you.

[clears throat] I wonder if they have any magazines.

They never have magazines in diners.

Maybe I can go and find some.

You don't need a magazine.

Chip, I'm--

Diana, honey, when we get back to that motel,

you won't need a magazine.

-[man] Hi, Sandy. -[Sandy] Hi there.

Uh, give me two coffees to go, a couple of those jelly donuts.

I hope you're not planning to eat

all those jelly donuts by yourself.

Now, what makes you say that?

Well, I wouldn't want you to develop love handles.

-Well, there you go. -Thanks.

-Have a nice evening. -See you later.

I always wanted to know how to make paella.

-Pailla. -Paella.

-Paella. -Yeah.

In Spain, everyone has their own

closely guarded family recipe for it.

Don't tell me that you've been to Spain, too.

I have been to Spain, too.

Right before the first re-elections.

The very first very tense time.

I was even shot at on a beach in Portugal.

Wasn't there ever something or, I don't know, someone

to just keep you in one place?

No, not really, 'cause I was never in one place

long enough to become attached.

Okay, then why all the globetrotting?

I guess it was my small town upbringing

that I was trying to escape.

I was born on a little farm outside of Steubenville, Ohio.

But I always had plans

on being important, sophisticated man of the world.

Dean Martin was from Steubenville, you know.

-Oh, no, I didn't know that. -Absolutely.

So while I was, uh, growing up, it was never good enough.

Now I feel nostalgic for things I hated as a kid.

But then I always hated seafood, too.

Well, Knots Landing must seem pretty unexciting

after all your world adventures.

-No, no, no, no, no, no. -No?

It's the people that make a place.

And I think Knots Landing is very exciting.

Ben, how are you doing?

Charlie.

I haven't seen you

since we covered the last presidential election together.

Ah, Valene, this is Charles Coulter.

Charlie, this is Valene Ewing.

Mrs. Ewing needs no introduction.

How do you do? It's nice to meet you.

Nice to meet you, Mrs. Ewing.

Oh, I don't know how you do it, Ben.

Always two steps ahead of the rest of us.

If there's a story, there's Ben Gibson.

Listen, if you haven't already given him an exclusive,

I'd like to get you tomorrow.

-Could we set something up now? -I don't think so.

Uh, Val, you don't understand.

Wait a minute. Uh, thank you, Charlie. Thanks.

Valene, please let me explain. Let me drive you home.

-No, you just... -Wait a minute.

You wait a minute.

I am sick and tired of people lyin' to me.

And I've gotten to the point where I won't tolerate it.

I know now what I'm worth.

And I'm not gonna throw it away on someone like you.

You're makin' a mistake. You are dead wrong.

Alright, alright.

Are you a reporter or not, huh?

I run a cable news station.

-Oh! -It has nothing to do with you.

Oh. You ready to hit the road?

I'm gonna go to the ladies' room.

[suspenseful music]

[automated voice] And that'll be $1.20

for the first three minutes, please.

Thank you.

[phone ringing]

Call coming in 8.20 p.m.

[suspenseful music]

Hello?

Hello?

Hello, mommy, it's me. I'm with Chip, and I'm...

-Did you get it? -No.

-Damn it! -Why not?

Why not?

Do you know that there's a human life at stake?

My daughter's life.

Karen, if she called once, she'd call again.

He won't let her call again!

What good is this stuff?

This high-tech garbage if it doesn't even work?

[intense music]

Diana, honey, I'm sorry

I couldn't let you talk to your mother.

I was afraid of what she was gonna say to you.

Your mother's been against us from the start.

I cannot afford to lose you.

-I understand. -No, you don't understand.

You're trying to humor me.

You're treating me like I'm crazy.

-No, I'm not. -Will you listen to me?

I love you.

You're the most important thing to me in the whole world.

You have to understand that, darling.

I would never do anything to hurt you.

I love you.

Oh, you're home early, sweet pea.

Where's Ben?

I left him at the restaurant.

Well, Valene, what happened?

He's a newsman, mama.

-Ah. -Something to do with cable.

He was just using me, trying to get a story.

I knew it.

When I first laid eyes on him this evenin',

I knew something was wrong.

If you ask me,

he had Chip Roberts written all over him.

Mama, I'm sorry. I'm going to bed.

-Oh, goodnight. -Will you do some writin'?

I don't know.

Want-Want somethin' hot to drink?

No, mama, I don't want anything hot to drink.

[somber music]

Karen...

Karen, you can't do this,

you've gotta try and get some sleep, please.

I miss her so much.

She misses you too.

And you know that because she called.

I'm so afraid for her.

Well, at least she called.

Well, at least we know she's safe.

I keep remembering so many things.

Bringing her home from the hospital

when she was a baby,

sitting up with her when she had colic,

watching her take those first steps.

She didn't learn to walk, she learned to run.

Even when she was crawling, she was always in such a hurry,

and she'd get up on those little legs,

and even when she could barely keep her balance,

she was just always so determined

to get to where she was going.

No matter how many times she'd fall, she'd just get up,

and she'd go for it again.

Oh, Mack, she's a part of me,

and I just can't stand losing her.

[Chip] You were so beautiful.

I'll never forget the first day I saw you.

You were watering the lawn or somethin',

and you had one of those headsets on.

I know you were wearing shorts. Hmm.

You were shuckin' and jivin' and boppin' to the beat,

off in a world of your own.

I must have watched you for five minutes

before you noticed me.

I thought to myself,

that is the most beautiful girl I've ever seen.

Maybe not pinup girl beautiful, but beautiful.

The way a cat's beautiful when she's cleaning her kittens,

or the way a sunny day can be beautiful

and make you glad to be alive.

I knew right then and there

that I had to make you a part of my life.

That you had something.

That you were something.

That I had been looking for all my life.

And that what we could have together would be magic.

And that I would do everything I could to make you love me.

[Mack] Diana's a smart girl.

She can talk her way out of anything, huh?

And that determination you talk about?

She's got it.

She doesn't take a back seat to nobody, huh?

If she wants to get away from Chip, she'll get away.

Well, she must want to talk to me because she called.

I was so worried after the way she left.

But she needs me, Mack, I know she does.

There's a bond between us.

And I feel her pain.

And I feel her fear.

And you see, I just don't know what to do to reach her.

[sobbing]

[suspenseful music]

[grunts]

[music continues]

[music continues]

Can't sleep?

Neither can I.

Well, it's gonna be a beautiful day.

The sky is so clear.

Come on, Diana, let's get dressed.

[indistinct]

What are you going to do to me?

Nothing, honey.

What makes you say a thing like that?

By the way, I disconnected the battery

because I didn't want anyone to steal your car.

[seagulls calling]

[somber music]

You're up.

Where have you been?

I should have called.

You're damn right you should have called.

-You alright? -Yeah, I'm fine.

Abby, I've been doin' a lot of thinking.

Where have you been?

I don't know. Drivin'. I needed to think.

Look, I can't stay here any longer.

What do you mean?

This place is filled with too many memories.

Besides, it's not me.

I found a ranch.

I'm gonna raise horses.

Now, I know how you feel about living' in the country,

but I gotta do this.

I can't cheat myself any longer.

If you wanna keep the house, that's fine.

-We'll work something out. -No, no.

Look, I was wrong to talk you out of it last year.

If you want a ranch, you should have a ranch.

I'm just sorry I...

I didn't listen to you from the very beginning.

Oh, Abby, when you see this place,

the house is incredible,

and there's a lot of land, and the kids can learn to ride.

You're gonna love it.

[Chip] Wanna listen to the radio?

[Diana] No, thanks.

I do.

See if you can't find a good country western station.

[radio chattering indistinctly]

[suspenseful music]

[breathing heavily]

-Chip? -It was an accident.

I've wanted so badly to tell you, to confide in you.

I slept with her once before we met,

and she got pregnant.

She was so jealous of you, of us.

I tried to keep her away from you,

but she kept threatening

to tell you that the baby was mine.

All I could think about was how badly I loved you

And how I needed you.

Ciji and I had a fight.

I got mad, crazy, and I hit her.

I didn't mean to k*ll her.

Don't you see, Diana?

I did it for you.

I k*lled Ciji so that we could be together.
