03x17 - Letting Go

Post by bunniefuu »

[instrumental music]

I have to leave Tuesday.

Oh, no. So soon?

Karen, let's go away together for the weekend.

[reel whirring]

You are not Sid Fairgate's wife anymore.

[Joe] 'So whether you go away with Larry'

'or you don't go away with Larry'

right now the decision is not yours.

There is a time to let go.

[theme music]

[music continues]

[music continues]

- Ha. Stop. - I mean it.

I mean it, 300 lbs minimum.

So, so I look at her and she looks at me

and I know she must be used to this.

So I make a point of not changing my expression.

And this dumb smile is frozen on my face.

- 'Ha-ha-ha..' - Oh, my God.

And I say, "Hey, hi, how are you?

Nice to meet you. How are you doing? Ready to fast?"

[Larry] 'Ha-ha. "Split," I say, "I meant split, split."'

Ha-ha. And I kept doing it all evening.

Uh, we go for a beer and I order a stout

'and I had to immediately apologize.'

[laughing] Oh, stop it, stop it!

I talked about the time my chub captain crawled in

and, uh, and how my niece had won a blubber gum title?

I don't know how I got through it.

I don't know how she got through it.

I don't believe a word you said.

Why would I lie about something like that?

[laughing]

[instrumental music on radio]

Why would I lie about something like that? It's the law.

And as long as it is the law

you can't bring methanol across the border.

Well, it's a stupid law.

Well, it's not so stupid.

It was to prevent them from bringing

moonshine into the country.

Yeah, but you can't drink methanol. It's a fuel for cars.

And the law doesn't know that.

Didn't you say there was a repeal on the books?

Yeah, but it's been bottled up in committee.

It'll probably die there.

Well, what are we gonna do?

Uh, I don't know, go speak to your state senator.

- You think it'd do any good? - No.

But, uh, at least it's a place to start.

[blows nose]

[sighs] Thanks, Richard.

- Yeah. Thanks, man. - Goodnight.

Goodnight. Take care of that cold.

[Richard] Yeah.

[door opens]

[door shuts]

Oh, you didn't have to do that.

I know, but I'm an incredibly good guy.

[laughs]

So, Friday night?

- Sure. - Good.

You know, it seems to me

we're ready to move up to another level.

- What? - Of kissing.

[sighs]

Larry, we're, we're just friends.

Would better kisses make us enemies?

Tsk. No, but, um..

- Well, you know what I mean-- - Let's give it a shot.

Okay, a scientific experiment.

If it doesn't work out, there's nothing lost.

- Uh.. - Close your eyes.

Come on. Just for a moment.

I feel silly.

[inhales sharply]

Not bad. Come on, keep 'em closed. Keep 'em closed.

Better.

Goodnight.

[plastic bag rustling]

[door opens]

Goodnight.

[instrumental music]

[door shuts]

[Gary] We need to go to Sacramento and see

the chairman of that committee.

Well, that's a good idea. Richard didn't think of that.

Yeah, Richard thinks small, as a matter of fact

ever since Laura left him, he doesn't seem

to be doing much thinking at all.

- Hey, don't be discouraged. - No, I'm not discouraged.

[sighs] Hey, we've gotten this far

'we're not gonna let some obsolete law beat us.'

No.

[chuckles]

Hi, Val.

Uh, we'll talk about this more later, alright?

- Yeah. - Alright.

Oh, listen, uh, find out the name

of that committee chairman in the morning, will you?

Oh, yeah, I will. Don't worry. Buh-bye.

[Gary] 'Goodnight.'

[door shuts]

[pensive music]

[sighs]

[instrumental music]

[door shuts]

[door shuts]

[door opens]

[door shuts]

[engine revving]

[door shuts]

[door locking]

[birds chirping]

[music continues]

Lorraine.

I'm here on a case.

In LA, I mean. A merger.

Joe, there's something you gotta do for me.

Name it.

[chuckles]

Make love to me.

[music continues]

Gary, I found out the name

of the committee chairman, Senator Riker.

- Did you make an appointment? - No, I couldn't.

He's leaving Sacramento tomorrow.

Uh, he doesn't have any time today

but I did find out that he's playing golf this afternoon.

- Well, then let's go. - Alright.

But are you sure we'll ingratiate ourselves

chasing him around the golf course?

We don't have any choice.

If we wait till he gets back, it's gonna be too late

to get the repeal bill voted on this session of the legislature.

Look, we're barely keeping our head above water as it is.

If we don't bring that methanol in soon

we're never gonna make it.

[drawer shuts]

Gary, what's the matter?

Nothing's the matter.

Look, uh, it's only an hour's flight

and there's not much doing around here this afternoon.

[inhales sharply]

Oh. It's Val, right?

[Abby] 'Val doesn't like us spending time together.'

Well, let's just say it's a touchy subject.

Well, let's get something in perspective, alright, Gary?

'You and I have invested a lot of time'

'and energy and money in this business'

and I would sure hate to see it go down the drain

because your wife is jealous of me.

[instrumental music]

[exhales sharply]

You still love me?

You have to ask?

No, but I had to find out.

- Is that it? - Yeah.

Uh, pick up some power of attorney forms, too, okay?

- Hello. - Okay.

Oh, hi. What are you doing here?

Something I didn't wanna telephone about.

- Anything wrong? - No. Nothing wrong exactly.

We've hit a design snag in the project

and I have to go back to Houston to try and iron it out.

Oh, well, not too serious, I hope.

Well, it's a back-to-square-one kind of thing.

[sighs] I have to leave Tuesday.

Oh, no. So soon?

I've been trying to keep things relaxed between us

let them progress at their own pace.

- You've been terrific. - Well, thank you.

Only now..

Karen, let's go away together for the weekend.

"They chained him to a rock in the sea and let him have.."

[indistinct reading]

Hi, darling.

[door shuts]

What are you doing home?

We have to go to Sacramento.

- We do? - Uh, Abby and I.

Is Richard going with you?

No, he can't make it.

Overnight?

We won't know till we get there. Probably not.

- But there's possibility? - Oh, damn it, Valene!

I'm in business with Abby. I'm not having an affair with her!

- Gary, I didn't say you were! - But you're suspicious!

You're always suspicious, and I'm getting sick of it.

Well, Gary, what do you expect when every time I turn--

Valene, we're partners! It's a new business.

You just can't get it through your head that being in business

isn't a 9:00 to 5:00 deal!

Okay, Val.

You don't trust Abby. You don't trust me.

- Gary, I didn't say that-- - Fine!

Come along with us to Sacramento.

Oh, come on, that'd be ridiculous!

I don't wanna come along like some kind of a

uh, some kind of chaperone or a fifth wheel.

Then don't! Come along and learn what we do.

- Be part of it. - What'd be the point of--

Because I'm asking you to come. I want you to come.

I want you to see what it is we're doing.

- Well, Gary, that isn't-- - No, just..

Look, I'm tired of feeling guilty.

[Gary] 'Now, I want you to come.'

Please.

[birds chirping]

[Joe] So, counselor, when do you start?

- Start? - Your job.

Case. Merger. Mm?

Um, not for a couple of days.

I came early to see you.

I'm glad you did.

- You have to be somewhere? - Ah.

I've got a class at noon. Looks like I'm never gonna make it.

Sorry.

I'm not.

But I'd better call in.

- Joe. - Mm-hmm?

I want you to come back.

On your terms.

[receiver clanks]

[chair creaking]

[laughs]

I didn't mean to throw you a curve like that.

Oh, it's okay.

I should have known. I've been prepared.

I don't think I can go, though. I'm just, I'm not ready.

When do you think you will be ready?

I need more time.

Uh, two hot dogs, please, with everything, and a cola.

Oh, make mine plain.

There you are.

Karen, I don't think it's about time.

I don't know, I think it's about your state of mind.

Your state of mind in the right circumstances.

Forgive my modesty, but these circumstances

may be righter and rarer than you think.

We're very fond of each other. We like spending time together.

We're easy with each other.

No axes to grind, nothing to prove.

No demands, no pressures.

And I like kissing you.

[sighs]

What?

I like the way you kiss.

[instrumental music]

Oh, wait a minute, I think that's him right over there

with the green jacket.

Okay.

Uh, excuse me. Senator Riker.

Uh, excuse me, could we have a moment?

Uh, you'll have to forgive me. Uh, do I know you folks?

No, sir, you don't, but we'll only take a minute of your time.

[Gary] 'Uh, there's a bill in committee--'

SB, uh, 9097.

It's a repeal of the grain alcohol import restrictions.

Sorry, I, ha-ha, just don't do business on the links.

Call my office, make an appointment.

Uh, well, sir, we tried that

but we know you're gonna be away tomorrow

and if we wait till you get back

we may be out of business.

What business is that?

[Gary] Methanol, as a fuel for cars.

See, we refine it in Mexico, and until the law is repealed

we can't bring it into the state.

Look, it's just too complicated

an issue to discuss on the run.

[Abby] 'Well, why don't we tag along?'

We can talk about it between shots.

We won't get in the way. I give you my personal guarantee.

[birds chirping]

- So? - Mainly..

I guess I just miss you.

I miss you all the time, every minute, every day.

Even the things I hate about you.

There is nothing hateful about me.

- Wanna bet? - Always.

- There is one. - One what?

One hateful thing. Your betting.

- Okay. - Gambling.

- Do I gamble? - Look.

When you call the bookie on the phone and name a team

in a given game and give or take an edge of so many points

and indicate a sum of money pledged, what do you call that?

- I thought that that was sex. - Mm-hmm?

[groans] Oh.. It really does miss me.

[birds chirping]

Wonderful.

- Yeah. - Yup. Not bad. Not bad.

[Riker chuckles]

Uh, I'll catch you up, huh?

Uh, folks, look, I wanna commend you for doing your part

to attack the energy crisis that threatens--

Uh, excuse me, senator, but we don't want a commendation.

Just a little help in clearing the way for us to do business.

Yeah, it's not that simple.

See, this legislative session has a month to go

and more pressing issues have to take priority.

Well, excuse me, senator, but isn't energy a pressing issue?

Yes, yes, but the public seem to have adjusted

to the shortages and the high cost.

[Riker] 'Now crime is a much bigger issue with the public'

'right now, we've six pieces of crime legislation to deal with'

plus a nursing-home regulation bill.

Well, what would it take to get a repeal to the vote?

[sighs] Public clamor.

That's obviously something that we--

[Abby] 'You're the committee chairman, aren't you?'

You could get it to the floor, couldn't you?

[Riker] 'Yes, yes.'

Look, I'm a politician, right?

I deal in reality.

Reality means what my constituents want.

[Riker] 'Okay?'

'Now look, it's just a routine matter.'

The old law will be repealed when it's voted on.

So just hang on until next session, okay?

Good luck.

[wind howling]

- We can't hang on. - I know.

[instrumental music]

[door opens]

[door shuts]

[keys jingling]

[keys clanking]

[thudding]

Joe?

- Oh. - Karen.

[laughing]

Look who's here.

Hi! Lorraine!

Oh. What are you doing here?

[Lorraine] Oh, you look great.

I'm here on a case, a merger.

And I also came to eat a little crow.

To beg me to come back to New York.

Oh, I wish you would have told me you were coming

I could have fixed something special.

Oh, you don't have to fix anything special.

It's special enough just being here.

You guys schmooze, I'll take Lorraine's bag upstairs

and then I'll be right down and I'll cook supper.

- Oh. - Ah.

Do you realize I have never been in your home?

It's beautiful!

I mean, every time we've gotten together, it's been in New York.

Oh, I know.

Listen, would you excuse me for a minute?

- Lorraine. I'll be right down. - Sure. Okay. Yup.

[door opens]

[door shuts]

- Is Lorraine staying here? - Tonight?

- Yeah. - Yeah. It's okay, isn't it?

No, I don't think it is okay. I do have kids, you know, Joe?

And strange as it may sound, I don't think that

you and your girlfriend should nonchalantly sleep together

as though it were routine.

I mean, why do we assume that kids

automatically will accept it or should accept it?

Karen!

You could have asked, you know?

[door opens]

You know, my old friend, Melanie Bishop

lives here in Sacramento.

Maybe, uh, maybe I'll give her a call

and, uh, stay with them overnight.

- Fly back in the morning. - Fine.

Her husband's a legislative lawyer

and, uh, they know all the politicians.

So maybe they can come up with a good suggestion.

[Gary] At this point I'd settle for a bad suggestion.

[door opens]

[door shuts]

Hey, I gave her my room.

- I'm gonna sleep on the so-- - Doesn't matter.

- It sounds like it matters. - It doesn't matter.

Cookie, what is it?

Larry Wilson asked me to go away with him this weekend.

- Don't you dare laugh. - Oh.

I'm not laughing.

I don't know what to do.

You wanna go away with him?

I don't know!

I can't imagine living the rest of my life without lovemaking.

I, I don't like being alone. I hate being a widow!

You feel if you went away with him, you'd be disloyal to Sid?

- I don't think so. - Ah, still..

It's gotta be hard to think of being with anyone else.

Yeah.

Until last night..

...when Larry kissed me.

I liked it.

[sighs] Don't you dare laugh.

I did, I liked it, and I was shocked that I liked it.

Made you feel a little bit guilty?

Confused.

Hm.

Karen.

You ever go to the cemetery?

No. Why? I mean..

[scoffs] I-I don't feel any presence there. Why?

I'm just wondering.

What?

You ever think about taking that ring off?

This is my wedding ring, Joe! It's my wedding ring!

Hey, I know.

I better go see Lorraine.

- You okay? - I'm okay.

- I'll be down in a minute. - Hm.

Joe.

What?

[instrumental music]

What what?

[chuckles]

Come on. Let me have it.

[sighs] Karen.

You won't go to the cemetery

and you won't take your wedding ring off

because you are locked into the past.

You are not Sid Fairgate's wife anymore.

[Joe] 'So whether you go away with Larry'

'or you don't go away with Larry'

right now the decision is not yours.

And it ought to be.

Karen..

...there is a time to let go.

[music continues]

[sighs]

[door opens]

[door shuts]

I cooked this meal. Let them clean it up.

Hey, we got five for poker.

[Joe] I never gamble.

Oh, right, like I never argue.

- Do you argue? - Only in court, Michael.

You don't still play the horses, do you?

[Joe] Absolutely not.

[Lorraine] No, he's not lying.

He sticks mainly to baseball, basketball

tennis, hockey, Canadian lacrosse--

But no horses. Nothing with animals.

Unless you count John McEnroe.

[chuckles]

So we gonna play cards or what?

What?

I'd really like to see

some of your old home movies.

Our home movies?

How come you never asked to see those before?

Hey, listen, if you don't want to, that's okay.

I just thought it might be a good idea.

[instrumental music]

[upbeat music]

[door opens]

Hello.

Hi, senator.

- Hello. - How was your game?

- Not bad. Not bad. - Good.

- Come on in. - Thanks.

[door shuts]

Where are your partners?

Flying back to LA.

I admire your persistence.

[Abby] 'Well, I admire you, senator.'

I admire what you stand for.

I admire your record in the senate.

- Really? - Yes.

I'm not a political expert, but I've

I've been following your career.

I know that you have initiated more important legislation

than anybody else up here.

Laws that...get things moving

that make a difference and that mean something.

[sighs] Lord knows I try.

[laughing]

Well, I don't know about Him, but I know.

[chuckles]

That's why I-I wanted to talk to you again.

- Uh, Mrs.. - Ms. Cunningham.

Ms. Cunningham, like I tried to tell you earlier--

That you deal in reality. I know.

But the reality of the situation is that we have to have

that law repealed now, in this session.

- It can't be done. - Yes, it can.

And you can do it.

[inhales sharply] Ms. Cunningham--

Look, I know it was unfair to corner you

like that on the golf course, but this is important.

For us it's the whole ball of wax

but I think it's important for the country

I think it's important for the state.

[sighs] Look, I know that I can explain this better to you one-on-one

if you'll just give me the chance.

- I'm leaving town tomorrow. - 'I know.'

So why don't we talk now, or better yet

why don't we talk over dinner tonight?

[Abby] 'I think I can make you understand.'

[reel whirring]

[Joe] 'Who took these?'

[Karen] 'It must have been Eric.'

- 'Not bad.' - 'Not good either.'

Looks like dad was afraid those seagulls

are gonna leave something behind.

[chuckling]

It's a great shot. It's not winning.

It's how you play the game.

[Joe laughs]

Alright. We're number one.

- Heh. - Yeah.

Yeah. Number-one turkeys.

[Karen chuckles]

Oh, I remember this.

- 'Now that's good form.' - 'Not bad. Not bad.'

Except he missed.

Fine.

[Eric] 'Here goes the superstar.'

So did you, hotshot.

- 'Good move.' - 'He got quick.'

- Wow! - Hey!

[Eric] 'Now you'll see some form.'

[Joe] 'heh-heh-heh. Guys.'

- 'Oh.' - Hey, hey. Oi.

[laughing]

Very modest family.

[instrumental music]

[Micheal] 'This seems familiar.'

Well, why shouldn't it? It's the same room last Christmas.

I-I mean, the Christmas before last.

No, not the room.

Mom and Diana, they're arguing.

[music continues]

[Karen laughs]

Well, whatever I said, it obviously upset her deeply.

- Heh-heh. - What a ham.

See that? Now we have proof on film how she treats me.

[scoffs] Sibling abuse.

[laughing]

You were eating the decorations.

- Yeah, but that hurt. - Good.

Wait a minute. Wait a minute.

[music continues]

- 'Oh..' - 'Oh, boy.'

[Joe] 'You guys really cleaned up, huh?'

Christmas morning.

- W-what is.. - 'There he is.'

- 'Santa Claus.' - What is that?

What happened?

[Diana laughs]

- Ha-ha.. - Where's he going?

Dad wouldn't let me spring the new tripod.

[Diana laughs]

- 'Uh..' - 'Ha-ha..'

[Joe] 'Oh. Out of sight.'

[all chuckling]

- 'Here it goes.' - Ha-ha..

[laughing]

[mumbles]

[instrumental music]

[all laughing]

That's my present to daddy.

[Karen] 'His blue robe.'

[instrumental music]

[music continues]

[music continues]

[instrumental music]

[music continues]

[music continues]

[fire crackling]

I feel so awful for them.

I don't.

Ten to twelve years of Sid Fairgate

is worth ten lifetimes of some other father.

[scoffs] I know. I had one of the other fathers.

I guess I envied them, too.

Alright, listen, I got two questions.

Go.

You really out here on a case?

Of course not.

I just made that up before I got your reaction

to my being here, you know, self-protection.

- Hm. - Go.

[laughing]

What did you mean that you wanted me back on my terms?

Just that. You win.

I win?

What do I win? What's the prize?

Home and family.

The things you've been agitating for.

Yeah, but why do I win?

You want the same things that I do?

I want you.

You want those things so badly, I want them, too.

- Ah. - What's the matter?

[sighs] This is not.. It's not tracking.

Joe, we lived together for six years.

Yeah.

I mean, most of that time you were trying to sell me

on marriage and babies.

Right?

I wanted to be a hotshot lawyer, which I was and am.

[laughing]

When you moved out, I was wrecked.

I mean, that's expected at first

but this didn't get better, it got worse.

What do you mean wrecked?

I mean, it's like the old song.

You never know what you've got till you lose it.

Nothing is fun anymore.

- The Philharmonic is boring. - Yeah, well, it is anyway.

[chuckles] I mean, going out for a pizza is a chore.

You don't need to eat pizza.

Shopping at Bloomingdale's makes me cry.

Now that's a problem.

[laughing]

When the new Woody Allen movie opened

I had to cross the street a block before

so I wouldn't have to go past the theater.

That's how bad it got. Really.

And finally, even being a hotshot lawyer turned yucky.

I miss you, Joe.

I mean, missing you is what I do for a living

and for a hobby and to pass the time of day and night.

I mean, that kind of love is not chopped liver.

It's important.

I think it's what Karen and Sid had.

You don't let that slip away. Mn-mn.

Letting that go is just, it's immoral.

- Uh.. - It's unethical.

It's definitely crazy.

You still love me, don't you?

I mean, I know this is kind of

a funny time to ask, right?

I mean, after a speech like that

it's gonna be pretty embarrassing

if the answer is no.

Can't you just shut up a little bit, huh?

[laughs] Thank God. He still loves me.

[laughing]

[instrumental music]

[seagulls squawking]

[door opens]

[door shuts]

Joe.

I came outside to sit on the stoop.

I forgot, you don't have any stoops in California.

[sighs] You oughta come back to New York.

There's stoops all over the place.

Yeah. Very funny. Yeah.

[birds chirping]

What do you need a stoop for? What's wrong?

Lorraine, I really love you.

Oh, boy, it's gonna be bad.

I always wanted to have a family with you.

You've got it.

Won't work. Not unless you want it, too.

I do want it. I told you how much I wanted.

You told me how much you wanted me.

[scoffs] That's terrific.

You're using marriage and children like a currency.

[Joe] 'The price you're willing to pay to have me back.'

You're worth it.

Every kid, every PTA meeting.

[Joe] 'I know I must sound like an a*s.'

Listen, I don't wanna force those things on you.

I only want you to want them as much as I do.

- This isn't fair. - I know.

But marriage and having a family is a lifetime commitment

like the one Sid and Karen made.

And even with Sid gone, his kids are tough. They're healthy.

And they're handling things okay because they were

'they are loved and wanted.'

'You have kids because you want kids'

not because they're the price for something you want.

Yeah, well..

[sighs] Guess that's that.

- Lorraine. Lorraine. - I know. Look, no more.

Look, those kids in there are terrific, alright?

And that home is terrific.

[Lorraine] 'But terrific kids and a terrific home'

are not things I know much about. They scare me.

I-I, I mean, I would find it easier

to argue before the Supreme Court

than to be a wife and a mother.

But..

...I got myself ready to do it.

I mean, I would have been good at it, too

'for you.'

[sighs]

If you don't want it, look, goodbye and good luck, but..

'...I got nothing else to give you.'

[sighs] There's nothing left.

[instrumental music]

[sighs]

[door opens]

[door shuts]

[birds chirping]

Yoo-hoo-hoo-hoo!

- That's terrific! - Gary.

How did you-- Yeah.

[laughs] I think your friends must really have influence.

Yeah. Right. Okay.

I'll talk to you later, Abby. Right. Bye.

- Gary, what happened? - I can't get over it!

- What are you talking about? - Valene, come here, come here!

- Stop! What are you.. - Come here!

- Ha-ha-ha. - Gary, what happened?

- The repeal bill. - Yeah?

The committee's gonna vote on it this morning

and send it to the floor of the legislature. Yeah!

You heard the senator, once it's on the floor, no problem.

Darlin', that's wonderful! Oh, I'm so happy for you.

[chuckles] How in the world did all--

Oh, what difference does it make?

Let's just count our blessings.

- Wanna dance? Let's dance. - Dance? I don't wanna--

Uh, Gary, come on, I'm all blissed up.

Now stop it! Cut it out.

- Go finish your breakfast. - Right.

- Ah, this is great. - I-I-I just don't believe this.

Well, where's Abby now? She's still in Sacramento?

- No, she's at home. - She's home already?

Yeah. I guess she caught an early flight.

Gosh, she must have been up all night.

I guess so. Do you know what this means?

I mean, I'm gonna be able to bring that methanol in here now.

We're gonna make money like we never made before.

[sighs] I do like kissing you.

Your kisses are very influential.

Oh, yeah? How influential?

Almost influential enough to persuade me

to go away with you this weekend.

I've always hated the word almost.

[smacks lips] Oh, Larry, I'm coming back to life

and you've really helped me, but..

You were right not to wanna hurry things.

Coming back to life is a delicate process.

It can't be rushed.

I was married for a long time

I never had to think about morality.

Would going away with me be immoral?

I don't know what my morality is.

I was so young when I got married

and the whole world has changed so much since then.

Now anything goes.

[chuckles]

I have to find a place for myself in the new world.

I just haven't been able to sort it out yet.

Does that make any sense?

I'm afraid it does.

And there is a step I have to take

before I can go away for weekends.

I have to stop thinking of myself as a married woman.

How about thinking of yourself

as a woman who dates a man from Houston?

[chuckling]

Sounds like a good place to start.

[instrumental music]

Nice.

[doorbell ringing]

[music continues]

[door opens]

Hi, Val. Come on in.

[birds chirping]

Abby, I'm gonna have to ask you this.

[Valene] 'Was it your friends who got the senator to change his mind'

'or was it you?'

- What? - 'You heard me.'

What are you implying, Val?

If it was you, you shouldn't be ashamed of it.

'You should tell Gary it was you'

'so that you can get the credit that you deserve.'

Gary wouldn't understand.

You don't think so?

[chuckles]

The law is going to be repealed, Val. That's all that counts.

- Is it? - Mm-hmm.

Look, there are people who have a lot of money

and they use that money to get what they want.

There are people who have power, and they use that.

[Abby] 'You use whatever you have, whatever tools you can find'

whatever resources are available.

Use them to get what you want.

Well, what about what's right and wrong?

Morality is something you dwell on

after you know where your next meal is coming from.

Do you really believe that?

What do you think?

I think that I better keep my eye on you all the time.

Val, do.

How else are you gonna learn?

[sighs]

Maybe Joe is right, I mean

maybe I shouldn't be so willing to be what he wants me to be.

I'm not even sure I can be.

Well, if you're not sure, don't do anything.

You don't have to break up completely, do you?

No.

But?

But..

...there's a difference between hanging in and hanging on.

[Lorraine] 'I can hang in for a while'

but I just hope I know when to let go..

...and how to let go.

- Letting go is hard, isn't it? - Yeah.

It's almost as hard as starting over.

Actually, they're the same thing.

[instrumental music]

Well..

- You wanna finish? Great. - Sure.

[chuckles]

[car door shuts]

And there is also a time

not to let go.

Hi.

[door shuts]

I can't do this. I feel stupid.

[sighs]

I mean, uh

why do I have to say these things to you?

Why can't I just think them

at home?

It's like praying.

You have to be in church.

[breathing heavily]

[chuckles]

That reminds me, when I was a little girl

I thought God couldn't hear me unless I radioed in.

I mean, he was so far away.

I used to say, "God, come in.

One, two, three, four, five. Roger."

[chuckles]

Can you hear me, Sid?

[instrumental music]

Sid, come in.

One, two, three, four, five.

I liked it when he kissed me, Sid.

I think that means I'm coming back to life.

I miss you so physically..

...as well as any other way.

And I think, I think it's good

that I'm waking up again, don't you?

I mean, I'm still young, aren't I?

I'm probably beginning to send out signals or..

...or rather, to break down the wall I built around myself.

That doesn't mean I, I don't still adore you.

I love you forever.

It means that with you I-I acquired a taste for love

and a, a-an addiction to it and..

...I've gotta get a fix

sooner or later.

Oh, bad metaphor.

I'm sorry, Sid, I just.. I can't do this.

[sighs]

This is only a cemetery

and this is only a grave.

You're in me, not in there.

[music continues]

So..

See ya.

Oh.

[bird chirping]

Oh, I forgot.

Remember this?

Well, I've been thinking

and I think I'm gonna wear my wedding band

on this chain with my locket.

I don't think I should wear it here anymore.

I think that taking it off my finger

will mean I'm starting to let go.

Not, not of our love

or our marriage

or our beautiful sacred memories..

...but of my fantasy..

...the one that hovers around telling me

this didn't really happen

you're not really gone..

...it's all been a terrible nightmare.

[music continues]

You are gone.

And it's real.

[sniffles]

Well..

Goodbye, piece of stone.

I'm sorry I couldn't have been any better at this.

[music continues]

[birds chirping]

[theme music]

[music continues]
