[machine whirring]
[engine revving]
It sat for ten years
and it's finally alive.
[Dave] We've been working
on this kick a*s 1955 Bel Air.
[Kevin] So, we need
to rewire the entire car.
[Kip] It locks in
perfectly like that.
[Dave] We actually
have another project,
a 2002 Ferrari 360 Spider.
[Justin] I'm not gonna lie,
it's probably been every bit
of ten years since I've
replaced one of these.
I think Kevin could beat you
up now though.
-[Justin] Are you stupid?
-[all laughing]
[theme music playing]
[Dave] When I look
at a blank canvas,
I see endless possibilities.
As the ideas come to mind,
the lines start
to fall into place.
And before you know it,
we have a bitchin' ride.
[tires screech]
[Dave] A bitchin' ride
has intense color...
[man laughing]
This is gorgeous.
[Dave] ...performance...
[man] It's fantastic.
[Dave] ...stance,
wheels, sound.
[engine revving]
[Dave] There's one thing
that makes our cars stand out,
ours are Bitchin' Rides.
[tires screeching]
-[Dave] Ah, it never gets old.
-[Kevin laughs]
[Dave] A lot of cars
come into our shop
every single year
and a lot of 'em leave
complete builds.
Sometimes those cars enter in
already started
by another shop
and just need a little bit
of the Kindig love.
This one
in particular has been here
for a couple of minutes,
and we just need to do
a couple things on it
to get 'em on the road,
and finally have
the project finished.
All right, Kyle.
Dog.
-We got a lot
of figuring out to do.
-[Kyle] Yeah, we do.
So, obviously...
So, this car was put
together by somebody else.
It came to us to get wired
and fired and running.
The engine hasn't been
started in probably,
I believe ten years.
There's a little bit of good
and a lot of bad
that goes with that.
-[laughs]
-[Kevin] Okay?
-Obviously, we need to make
sure the engine gets primed.
-Yep.
[Kevin] The other
really bad thing is
is that there's been a lot
of updates in electronics
in that amount of time.
So, we need to rewire
the entire car.
I think it had some...
first version
of a Holley Dominator,
-almost like looks like Pong.
-[Kyle exclaims] Ooh!
-Whoa!
-[Kevin] Like DOS
kind of stuff.
-Yeah, that's almost like--
-Yeah.
I don't even think anybody
has any cords to plug
into it anymore.
So, we need to re-do that.
We want to put a brand new
Holley Dominator in it.
I have a list going
of everything that
I've come across so far.
The injectors, obviously,
we'll replace,
and we'll get some
shorty spark plugs,
so we have plenty of clearance
between the header primaries
and the spark plug boots.
Little bit of fab work down
here under the radiator.
I was gonna say that.
So, Greg has
obviously, 3D printer,
a really cool intake
'cause there's not a lot
of room for the radiator here.
Mm-hmm. I think
we got to catch Ken,
-sort it out that
we want to run.
-[Kevin] Yep.
We can you know tuck in
the fender wells.
And that way the engine
can breathe.
Cool. Maybe, it'd be cool
if we could drain it back
to the oil pan,
so the customer doesn't have
to try to mess around
and drain it.
-Yeah, for sure. Dump oil
all overs, nice paints.
-[Kevin] Yeah, exactly.
-All around,
a much better setup.
-Perfect.
-So...
-Well...
I'm gonna leave you
to it and exit.
Obviously, you have
a list of questions,
I'll answer everything.
If I don't have the answer,
I'll get on the phone
and figure it out.
-Cool. Sounds good, man.
-[Kevin] Okay, brother.
-Thanks.
-[Kevin] Yep.
We can move on
to the exhaust issue.
What we're gonna do now
is switch the headers out.
[machine whirring]
[Kip] With our cut
pretty flat,
V-band has a nice
little step in it.
It locks in
perfectly like that.
[Dave] It's great to use
these V-band clamps
and they fit perfectly
on the headers,
but when the collector goes
to the exhaust system,
well, that's
a different story.
We're gonna have to modify
these just slightly.
[machine whirring]
The old V-bands
that were on that exhaust pit
through the whole chassis,
the new ones,
so we'd have to turn
a little bit off.
So, that's how
it is out the box,
and that's how much
we're gonna turn off of it.
Not very much,
less than a tenth of an inch.
Backs are in place.
One of the things
as kind of a pain
on stainless,
they lose a lot of velvet.
It's important to have a lot
of tacks to hold everything
in place.
And your fitment
should be tight also.
So, our fitment is tight
with a lot of tacks.
So, I'll put some on the car,
and once we get
everything else fit,
I'll just weld it all at once.
So, it's hanging there,
and then I'll put it down
and put the gasket in,
progress the full ceiling,
tighten it out.
You don't wanna build
an exhaust with things
still loose. [laughs]
'Cause then you're like,
"Oh, it fits!"
And then, you tight everything
down and it doesn't
fit anymore.
Building exhaust is literally
a lot of putting...on
and taking it back off.
We now have the old
exhaust that was done before,
not by us.
And then,
we have the new header,
so we have a, you know,
a little bit of a fitment
issue there.
So, I'll be taking
the exhaust off the side,
chopping it off here,
I'll be making a new section
from here to here.
[exhilarating instrumental
music playing]
[machine whirring]
The muffler terminal has been
shrunken and fits perfectly.
Now, we just have to modify
the other exhaust pieces.
Exhaust systems don't just
exist in a straight line.
All of the bottom of these
cars have its intricacies
and there's a lot of obstacles
you have to overcome.
[machine whirring]
[Dave] The exhaust on this car
is finished,
and it looks marvelous.
But we still have ways to go.
With this car,
back in the day,
obviously, had a distributor
and spark plug wires
came off the distributor
and then ran down
to the spark plugs.
Since we're running
a Holley Dominator on this
and we're kinda
switching things up,
we are gonna do coil on plugs.
While removing the distributor
from a big block Chevy,
you need to replace it
with something.
And in this case,
we're gonna go ahead
and use a Holley Dominator.
This will basically replace
the distributor,
and it will give us
the ability to go with
electronic fuel injection.
So, that's also gonna require
a couple more parts,
like coil packs.
Now, we got to make
spark plug wires.
You can't just go to summit
or whoever you're ordering
parts from,
and say, "Yeah, I need
spark plug wires for,
you know, Tri-Five Chevy
with coil packs
behind the fender wells."
So, what we're gonna do
is put the correct boots
on here.
We'll strip a little bit
of the insulation away
and crimp the right
terminal on.
That will complete one side,
and then I'll kind of
figure out how I want
to route it through the car,
and ultimately get up
to these spark plugs.
So, these are our
ignition coils.
These are MSD.
We have a bracket mounted
and tucked 'em away here.
When the car
is all said and done,
there will be a panel
that comes down
and covers all this up.
I have this whole roll
of spark plug wire
and I'll keep it that way
on each one.
But what I'll end up doing
is figuring out how to run
these spark plug wires
through the car,
and ultimately, get them
to the spark plug.
Once I have this whole
bank done,
then I'll figure out,
"Okay, how can I cleanly
route the wires down
along the side of the block?"
And then, once it gets that
bellhousing area here
is where I'll bring it over
towards the ignition coils.
It's super easy to just
throw 'em up there,
zip tie 'em all together
and call it a day.
It doesn't look clean.
It's not that nice
and you could burn boots.
So, I'm gonna mark
this one off, cut it off
and finish it out.
And I'll just keep
moving down each cylinder
until we got a full set
of spark plug wires.
So, we're finishing up
our spark plug wires.
This car is going
to be running,
like LS-style
coil packs on it,
so they're mounted down
underneath the fender.
Ultimately, I opted
to switch out to these
ceramic boot spark plugs.
They can live a lot closer
to the header primaries
and not melt.
We're gonna finish up
with some of these
breathers for the engine.
It's a pretty big engine,
it's a 632 cubic inch,
so there's gonna be
a lot of crankcase gases
floating around in there.
So, you wanna have
adequate breathers
over to our catch can.
Otherwise, if you
just stuff filters on top
of the valve covers,
what would happen
is it's gonna push that
oily vapor out,
it's gonna
saturate the filters,
and then it's just gonna
leak oil and drop down
all over the engine.
So, we run two dash 12 mods
off the valve cover
over to this
air oil separator.
The catch can
is vented on top,
so it's gonna allow
the vapors into the air
to escape and not build up
in the crank case.
But then, the oil
will settle in the can.
Just finish up these hoses.
I'm going to take them
back off,
flush them out,
and put them back on for good.
And we should be good to roll.
We're getting really close
to being finalized and ready
to fire the engine up,
but first we got to install
this new unique
intake manifold.
[Kyle] This is alien
intake manifold.
I think, actually,
isn't that a movie
in the '80s...
called Alien or something?
[Dave] We've been
working on this
kick a*s 1955 Bel Air
and it's almost ready to fire.
[Kyle exclaims] Yeah!
These are all Nelson's parts.
He's had it out
for quite a while, I guess,
but it's his alien
intake manifold.
I think, actually,
isn't there a movie
in the '80s...
called Alien or something?
Wasn't there a movie though?
-[man] Oh, yeah.
- Alien?
I don't know if you read it
on his website,
he said, "That's what
this intake is modeled after,"
like how the alien's
heads look.
I don't know, never seen it,
but I guess, I can kind of see
where you got the idea
or the name from.
We are piecing it together
and making it work
for this car.
We have the Nelson racing
alien intake manifold
for a big block Chevrolet,
and possibly the very
first one ever built,
almost ready to fire up
in this beautiful 1955 Chevy.
[Kyle] We used
a vacuum filler earlier,
and what it does is it pulls
the vacuum on the whole
cooling system,
and it also at the same time
checks for leaks
'cause if it doesn't
hold a vacuum,
you obviously have
a leak somewhere.
You can shut off the valve,
dunk the hose in
a gallon or a five gallon,
whatever you have.
And then,
when you crack the valve,
obviously, it's gonna
wanna do something,
so it pulls all that coolant
into the cooling system.
Usually, it does
a pretty good job
and it fills it,
and then you're done.
In this case,
it was a little low still.
So, I'm just trying
to top it off,
so we can get this thing
fired up.
The next step
in the whole process
is actually fire the car up
and see if it runs.
But at the same time,
we actually have another
project which just arrived.
[Justin] All-in-all
for a 2002 Ferrari.
This car is in pretty
good shape,
and this top is not.
We need to put new one on.
It shouldn't be
the biggest job here,
especially because I got
the Bigwig Carson
with me today.
And Carson is my youngest son.
[engine starts]
[Justin] Three... Stop!
The main reason
to replace this top
is because it's all worn out,
all the elastics are worn out.
There's some holes
in the windows cracked out.
This top has definitely
been worked on.
And the reason why I know...
Every one of these
bolts right here
weren't in all the way
because they're
cross threaded.
I'll guarantee,
I'll have to re-tap all these
to make these work.
Another reason I know that
this top has been worked on
is they've pulled
this whole top off
just to sew
a back window in this.
When half the work is done
by tearing this top apart,
just spend the extra
and have it all brand new.
But they chose
not to do that, so...
I don't know why.
Maybe, the guy was trying
to save money.
I mean, it is a Ferrari.
Luckily, my son is here
to help out.
You wanna work?
-[Carson] Yeah,
teach me the ways.
-Get this top off.
Oh, thanks. Where do I start?
I'm helping you.
I'm your new assistant.
You're the big man
who have a job, not me.
So, now you're just
my assistant?
That's what I plan on being.
This is exactly why I said
-that you're not gonna
be any help to me.
-[Carson] Why?
Because I can
just get this done.
Okay, then I'll just
leave then.
No, don't do that.
With all the years
I've been in business,
Carson has been around,
but he's never been really
around all these cars.
So, this is a new thing
to him.
This is a 350 Spider 2002
with the broken top
right here.
We have to have it done
next week.
New top, that's it.
There's nothing
more than that.
It's all just replacing
the canvas on it,
we're not building the top.
An R and R, remove and replace
is all this is.
But there are a few things
that have to be set right
for it to look decent.
The goal here is to get
this gasket off, Carson,
without ruining this gasket,
so we're not having
to replace it.
And I can tell you right now,
that just tucks in,
I'll grab a hook tool
and we'll go from there.
This does not normally
get glued in.
Usually, just tuck
and pressure fit.
I'm not gonna lie,
it's probably been
every bit of ten years
since I've replaced
one of these.
So, there's gonna be
a couple things I'm gonna go.
Well, what do we do here?
It's just called work smarter,
not harder.
Okay.
Whether or not he wants
to take this business
over one day,
that's gonna be
totally up to him.
But for now, we're just trying
to teach him the skills.
Grab a piece of tape.
Or you could scribe
it in there with an arrow
going forward
and just put a R by it
and we'll know.
Good, that part is off.
Just get under here,
-and go like that.
-Okay.
And start pulling
this up, okay?
The biggest mistake people
make with convertible tops
is they store it down in
what you call the well.
You don't wanna do that.
You wanna store
a convertible top
with the top up, not down.
Okay, now we gotta peel off
this back area of the car,
all the way around it.
-[Carson] It's right here?
-Yep.
You wanna raise...
-[Carson] Yeah.
-Okay, good.
Maybe, you'll work hard
if we do that.
Working with family
can be fun,
but can also be
a pain in the a*s.
-[Carson] What's on the line?
-Your job.
-[chuckles]
-You got a head start,
not fair.
You're asking me
what's on the line,
like, gambling?
It's ill*gal in Utah,
first off.
You can't gamble
till you're 21, right?
Well, I don't know.
I seem to think you gamble
on sports all the time online,
and you're 18, so.
I'm up $150, so.
-[laughs]
-Hey.
Why not gamble
if you're winning?
Hey, even with a head start,
I'm done.
[Carson] Exactly, that's why.
Because of a head start?
[Carson] Well, you would have
cooked me, anyways.
Experience beats youth
every time.
All right, I need my glasses.
I'm trying to put
the top back,
so I can get to a couple
of spots here to get this off.
And do without
cutting it though.
I've got a zip tie on here
and I'm not sure why.
[engine starts]
Push that down in the back.
-This?
-[Justin] Yeah.
It's not going.
[Justin] We're working
on a 2002 Ferrari 360 Spider.
Me and my son Carson,
we're working on this.
We got this thing whipped.
Push that down in the back.
This?
It's not going.
It's like, holding up
against it.
[machine whirring]
What?
Holding it up from going down.
You're gonna be my helper.
Oh.
I only tease him
and give him a hard time
'cause I actually
love the kid.
But I know
at the end of the day,
he can get
through this with me.
Sorry about that.
It's my first time.
[Justin] He's learning!
I'm kidding, bud.
I knew something
was holding it up.
[Carson] I don't know
if you're gonna be able
to get anything in there
and get that off.
It's just matter of getting it
to a point where it
needs to be.
[whirring]
I'm just drilling out.
These rivets hold in
the main tension cable.
What that ends up doing
is when this top comes down,
basically, the front header
to what,
on a hard top B2B pillar,
that just holds
the tension across this,
so it doesn't flap.
If you look at it...
This cable goes all the way
through this top,
down this guy right here,
and out.
The new top will come
with this whole new cable.
The next deal is
is I got to drill
these out right here.
[machine whirring]
No, I got this.
The reason I got this
is 'cause if it sli... Hey!
If it slips off and it goes
through the headliner,
it's on me, not you, okay?
[machine whirring]
Go grab an air blower.
let's blow this off,
so it don't end up
all over the car.
Not on my face.
I said not my face.
[laughing] You think
that's funny, huh?
It's been so long
since I did one of these,
but I feel like this cable
shouldn't have a zip tie
holding it.
Maybe you can research it.
You know what to do
to do that?
Use my electronic device?
Yeah, you know all about
electronic devices.
-You're on it all day long.
-No!
Not all the time.
Where's it zip tied at?
[Justin] Actually,
believe it or not,
having him help me
on this project,
he's been a lot of help.
You see it zip tied?
Yeah, it doesn't look like
it's zip tied in the video.
[Justin] Right here
what we're drilling out
right now,
it's the last thing
we drilled out.
It's the first thing
you're gonna install.
So, this is all we do first.
Yeah, that's where we're gonna
start with it.
[Carson] Okay.
Comes right off.
-Done!
-Boom.
Okay.
We finally got this
old top off.
It's been a while since
I've done one of these,
so it took a minute,
but we have it all off.
We definitely ran into
a couple of hiccups,
but once we get the new top,
we should be ready to go.
Cool. Break.
Stage one is remembering
what the hell I tore apart.
We got to do
the headliner first,
that's right.
[machine whirring]
[Justin] That broke off, yeah,
but that was broken.
I'm gonna have to
fix it somehow.
I have to go in
and glue it probably.
I probably should have already
done that, but whatever.
See that, it's Velcro.
Just pull it.
Just pull it?
No, pull the velcro off.
[Carson] If I can get
my finger in there.
It's the only one I got.
Come on, time is money.
I'm trying,
it's not coming off.
[grunts] Kid.
[Carson] That works.
[Justin] The new aftermarket
top we got,
it should be pretty much
put on,
plug and play, ready to go.
[whimsical music playing]
[Carson] What?
[Justin] What?
[Carson] I was figuring out
how to open it.
[Justin] We'll see if this
is the right one.
This is a factory material
that goes on
all these Ferraris
and it's called
a twillfast canvas.
It has almost zero stretch.
Okay.
That will tuck in.
It didn't come
with the headliner,
I had to order the headliner.
I had seen
it was ripped, so...
I decided to order one.
A good top like this last you
every bit of 15-20 years,
if you take good care of it.
That's the old one,
that's gonna go like that.
But this is broke,
so let's get it fixed.
Grab some glue.
-[Carson] Like that?
-[Justin] Mm.
[Carson] You've done
a Ferrari top?
I've done one of these tops,
but it's been so long
since I've done it.
If you don't do 'em every day,
you're not gonna remember
what the hell is going on.
Mm, learning how
to do convertible top.
If I need to help
a friend out, like,
in the future,
I wanna know how to do it.
Your... friends ain't gonna
own a Ferrari.
You kidding me?
-Says who?
-[Justin] Me, I just told you.
Jake's gonna own a Ferrari.
Jake can't even fit
in a Ferrari.
You're kissing me?
The guy is18 feet tall.
[Carson] Yeah, you're right.
Get that end right there, bud.
Let's pop this on real quick.
Just sort of kind of
hanging in there.
This gotta come off,
but, all right.
So, if I get a Ferrari
later in life,
don't know how to fix it.
Probably just like,
if I take over the business,
and I get a Ferrari,
I'll know how to do it.
Like, that's valid.
You can have the business
right now.
I'll take it and then sell it.
Sanding block.
And...
I don't know.
Sanding block.
And...
I don't know.
Think about it.
I guess, a sewing machine.
One or two.
Yeah, okay, there you go.
[Carson] Sewing machine.
I'm sticking
with sanding block.
Okay, cool.
You're gonna cut all your
materials with your teeth?
I guess you have to have
scissors, yeah.
[laughs]
So, three.
[laughing] "Sanding block."
And make sure,
them go in that clip.
You see the clips?
This thing?
Missing a clip right there?
-I think?
-[Carson] I think so.
There's a clip right here,
but there's not one up here.
Yeah, hold on.
Maybe it's on that headliner.
It might have stuck
to this headliner.
Almost a commercial break,
but we're back in it
to win it here.
[Carson] Feels like I kinda
know the clip you were
talking about.
So, I saw this one,
but there wasn't one up there.
Take over this business,
you better work faster,
I can tell you that.
I've never done this before.
[Justin] Headliner is in,
I'm just re-riveting these
one inch straps on,
and then from there,
we'll just install the top.
Okay!
[Dave] One of the first things
we noticed
was the steering needed
some attention.
Way too much play
and way too weird.
Conglomeration that was on
the steering shaft
when it came in.
It wasn't functional.
Wobbling all over the place,
too many joints.
I'm gonna go and feel
some of these to use,
seeing how I want it together
try to use as many of these
that came off of this
in a full custom build.
[Dave] We're not gonna do
a full build on this car,
but we're gonna try and use
as many of the original
pieces as possible.
What we ran into here
is trying to do in one
single run
of rod from the steering shaft
to the rack and pinion
isn't working out.
So, what we're gonna do
is we're gonna take
this bracket
and this heim joint here,
and we're gonna attach it
to the frame rail.
And we're gonna go,
essentially, like this,
and then, like this
to give us a kind of what's
basically a jog
around the primary
on that header.
All right, that wraps
up our steering shaft.
So, we got a nice little jog
around those headers
and we're keeping
our heim joint away
from the primary,
so it doesn't melt
the nylon out of it,
and it should be
good to go now.
Watch the heads turn.
Well, the new
steering linkage is done,
but you can't steer a car
if the car doesn't run.
[Kevin] Dude,
it's finally the day.
Yeah.
The whole story with this
is obviously another place
started the build,
they got to the engine,
and some things were old.
The engine is old,
the technology that ran
the engine was old,
and they kinda just washed
their hands of it.
So, he called us
-and we were supposed
to pick up the pieces.
-[laughs]
And then, we found this old,
old, old, ten-year-old DOS...
-comp-u something computer.
-Yeah.
So, we ended up putting
a Holley in it,
so you could actually
have modern electronics
to run the engine.
But it looks like
it's all together.
The word in the shop
is you're about ready
to fire this thing.
Yeah, we can do that.
We can fire it up.
Let's fire it up and see what
needs to be done.
Well, he's obviously gonna be
looking for fuel pressure.
I'm just gonna be looking
about how nice it sounds.
As soon as I figure out
this push button start...
[Kevin] Oh, it's got
one of those, too.
[Kyle] Yo, it's great.
-Of course, it does.
-Yeah.
It's literally been working...
[laughing] ...the entire time.
-Scales.
-Scales.
What kind of dragon?
[Kyle] Dragon fur?
Dragons don't have fur.
[producer] How do you know?
They have scales.
-No brainer.
-Maybe feathers.
[Tim] They also pretty sure
dinosaurs had scales
and now they got,
like, feathers.
-Yeah, but an iguana
is pretty much a dragon.
-[Tim] No, it's not.
[both laugh]
Am I being too facetious
or I should just answer?
I don't know,
I don't believe in dragons.
That's not a feather though.
[sighs wearily] We got to draw
the line here.
Are we talking Pokemon?
Are we talking, like,
real life dragons?
Got to see it
to believe it, right?
[Carson] What about
a komodo dragon?
They have scales.
Unless they are from Narnia,
then they're furry.
-[Carson] Komodo dragon.
-Sure it's not just
an oversized lizard?
-No, 'cause it's a dragon.
-Oh.
[Kevin] There's many
different kinds.
[Kyle] See?
What about like the one
from Neverending Story, bro?
That one had fur.
But depending on the age,
some shave...
If there's like a mean dragon
that has scales for furry,
I know... that.
Furry, scaly dragon.
See? Furry, scaly dragon.
Don't Google that.
[Kevin] The word in the shop
is you're about ready
to fire this thing.
Yeah, we can do that.
We can fire it up.
Let's fire it up
and see what needs to be done.
Well, soon as I figure out
this push button start...
[Kevin] Oh, it's got
one of those, too.
[Kyle] Oh, it's great.
-Of course, it does.
-Yeah.
It's literally been working...
[laughing] ...the entire time.
That's the way
the showbiz goes, dog.
Ain't no biz like showbiz.
Okay.
[Dave] Adding one more thing
that could possibly go wrong
on a car you hardly ever drive
is the dumbest thing
you could possibly do.
Like a push button start
for instance.
With a simple flick
of a switch in the trunk,
maybe Kyle can get this
bad boy running now.
So, what did the cubic inch
on this block end up being?
I'm pretty sure it's a 632.
[exclaims] Ooh!
That's a big one, dude.
[Kyle] Yeah, there we go.
[Kevin] Oh, we got fuel.
[engine starts]
It's alive.
It's sat for ten years
and it's finally alive.
What's it idling at?
It seems to idle really low.
It's pretty low,
it's 600 right now.
We'll have to wait for it
to warm up
before we dial in
all the idle.
[Kevin] What was probably
one of the biggest challenges
with this thing?
[laughing] All of it.
One? Can I only pick one?
No, I'm sure there was a lot.
Well, I'm super pumped,
I can't wait.
Well, let's shake it down
a little bit,
and let's get it up
on the rolls.
-Good job, bro.
-Thanks, man.
Sure I just centered this out.
It don't look like it is.
So, look here, son.
Oh, that's because
this piece is brewed.
It was already busted.
I didn't do it!
[Carson] You wanna do,
super glue it?
No, I'm gonna epoxy it,
but I gotta do it right now
before we go any further.
It's probably gonna
take an hour to dry.
Maybe I can get
some fast stuff.
Okay, inch and three quarters
by two and a quarter
out of sheet metal.
-Okay?
-[Carson] Yes.
[Justin] While we
get this glued?
[Carson] What did you say,
an inch and three quarters
and what?
And inch and three quarters
by two and a quarter.
[Carson] Three quarters.
[machine whirring]
Hey!
It's hot.
[Justin] Give me the... metal.
-[metal clanks]
-Come on.
Come grab it.
[Justin] Huh?
Damn kid.
[machine whirring]
What did I tell you
to cut this at?
Two and three quarters
by an inch and three quarters.
No. Two and a quarter.
[Carson] I heard two
and three quarters.
You would have got it right
if you would have listened.
Well, I heard two
and three quarters!
Okay.
Let's clamp this on.
I'm sure the customer
is gonna appreciate this.
I'll bet that
convertible top frame
is 8,000 bucks.
Can you grab me one of those
gloves, bud? Latex gloves.
I'm just gonna glue
on this piece of metal
for reinforcement.
It will hold pretty well
'cause according
to the package,
it's the world's
greatest bond.
James Bond.
Not James Bond.
[Carson] Man, I swear I heard
two and three quarters.
He definitely said
two and a quarter though.
I was just stuck
on one and three quarters.
You ready to look
like a dumbass
on national television?
Now, we've worked
through all the hiccups
and I had to deal with Carson.
Where's our trim black?
What is this doing in there?
I didn't use it.
Ask one of them.
[Justin] It will only
take a second here.
Just making a black,
so the bare metal
is not there.
And so it doesn't rust.
[Justin] Done.
[Carson] Beautiful!
Now, we're gonna
get this top out tonight.
I'll go over that way,
so you know
what you wanna do
to make sure
you don't scratch the window.
'Cause that's
a plastic window,
so you gotta tape 'em up.
It's like the plastic windows
don't work as good.
The problem is,
is sometimes you can
only do a plastic window
because it might not
fold in all right.
Have they ever done
glass windows with these?
I'll tell you right now, no.
It wasn't an available option.
Go grab me that old top,
will you?
[Carson] We're just re-using
that metal piece, right?
We'll set this top on it
and see what we're
up against here.
First thing is going to be
zip in this headliner.
Rip it the top on.
We only glued down the back
part of this and the front,
the rest is all held by cables
and pop rivets.
Got that guy, we got to go
from there to glue.
Man, I don't like glue
on this right now.
I don't feel like
it's the right time,
but it's the only time
'cause it doesn't tell me
where its gonna line up,
you know?
-[Carson] Right here.
-[Justin] I'm guessing.
That could be too tight.
So, with this new top,
the most difficult part
is gonna be gluing
the back part,
but if we didn't replace
all the stuff that needs
to be replaced,
it could have been
a bad, bad situation.
We're gonna pull it in
each corner here.
Do you normally only do
one coat of glue on this?
That's not even close
to right.
It will be like,
"No, I only do one, no cap."
-[laughing] Okay.
Yeah, that works.
-[producer]
[laughing] That works.
I think Kevin could beat
you up now though.
[Justin] Are you stupid?
[all laughing]
I told him, I was like,
"I'm gonna get him going."
You're a... son.
I'm gonna attach
them few wires.
Henry's gotta glue
these guys around.
Down in this channel
just like this,
but I'm gonna center
a mount here.
And then we're going to
pull forward and see
how it fits.
[whirring]
How's it looking?
[Carson] Good.
Will you shine a light, bud?
Much better.
-Okay.
-I'm getting better
and better by the day.
One of these--
Keep telling
yourself this, son.
I'll quit then,
you don't have to fire me.
This is how this is gonna go?
[Carson] It will look bad
on my resume if you fire me.
You don't have a resume.
You've been ripping your dad
off for five months.
So tight.
Ferraris.
I feel that guy
go over the top of that
'cause this is supposed
to go together.
So, let's look at it.
But I see nowhere
that these go
besides this way.
Dumbass. I bet you
it's like this.
I'm hoping this is the fix
because it tables to tight
and it wasn't letting
that go all the way down.
I'll try it,
but this battery is dead.
So, hopefully, it will go down
one more time for us.
[machine whirring]
We're at the point
where I steamed it out.
There's couple of wrinkles,
but we got to run this down
one more time.
I wanna make sure everything
is working properly.
All I need you to do is watch
and make sure
everything is moving
correctly, okay?
-Don't help it, just watch.
-Okay.
-[Justin] How are we looking?
-Looks good.
-The tunnel popped yet?
-Yep.
-Coming up?
-Mm-hmm.
-Clearing?
-Yep.
Okay, coming down.
-Good.
-Oh, yeah.
Okay.
We're gonna go back.
Make sure that goes
in the hole.
Yep. Gotta go in all right.
Oh, yeah.
[whirring]
Right on the money.
This is not easy.
This one is hard.
[Justin] It's definitely
one of your harder tops.
But you did a good job.
Thanks, buddy.
Thanks for your help.
-Thank you.
-But you're not done,
you're cleaning this.
Yes, boss!
-I'll get right
to that after this.
-Okay.
[engine starts]
[Dave] It's not always about
the actual horsepower
and torque numbers.
I mean, sure,
they're important.
But more importantly,
we wanna make sure that
somebody can get in the car
and it's reliable,
it can start up
and perform every single time
no matter who gets
behind the wheel.
Kenny, you wanna
flip the exhaust fan?
Thanks.
[engine starts]
It's all looking good.
Basically, go back
and look at the data log
and see what it was doing.
It was trying to add more fuel
than what I was
comfortable with.
So, we'll go back and we'll
make a couple changes
to get ahead of that.
I don't want the ECU
to try to play catch up,
I want that fuel
to already be there
once we get into
that rep range.
We'll make some quick changes,
and then we'll do it again
and see what happens.
This is the air oil separator
or breather if you will.
So, if we left
the valve covers
just wide open,
and then, you know,
revved it up to six grand
or 5,500 or whatever
we took it to,
it probably just start
throwing oil all over
the engine bay.
Since we've been
running this thing
harder and harder
as we get this tune dialed in,
I just like to crack that open
and make sure it's not dumping
a ton of oil in there.
It's dumping
a ton of oil in there,
then that's kind of a...
"Hey, you should check
the rest of the engine,
but all is well.
There's a little bit of oil
in there which is normal.
Uh, so, I think we're just
gonna keep running it.
[engine accelerating]
[engine accelerating]
That test was way better.
I'll let it idle and cool down
for a minute,
and then we'll call it good.
Good stuff, man.
Okay, I got
the injector numbers.
Yeah. Do we have good news?
Yeah. This is on--
[Kevin] So, our ten-year-old
engine that's been
sitting around forever
with some
old school technology,
which we've updated
all of that.
We've actually made it
so you can tune it.
-It sounded really good.
-Yeah.
It sounds really awesome
when you can take
a big block up
to those kind of RPMs
and it's just sounds like
it's just raging.
Yeah, I kind of wish
I heard it from outside,
but I was inside
with the windows up
and my ear plugs in.
-It sounds awesome.
-All right, cool.
Sounds like pure chaos,
semi-controlled.
All right, well,
we'll go drive it later
-and try to keep it
semi-controlled.
-Okay.
-So, anyway--
-Doing donuts.
But...
[chuckles]
This run I let off of, like,
but you can see
the power levels
starting to get up,
whether that's exhaust
or intake, whatever it is.
There's no sense in spinning
it any higher than that
-if the power levels
just start to taper off.
-All right, all right.
You know?
And the blue is horsepower?
[Kyle] Ah, yep, horsepower,
and then red is torque.
So, I mean,
we're 700 at the wheels.
-[Kevin] Nice!
-[Kyle] And we're
at almost 750 torque,
so 743.
-[Kevin] That's awesome.
-I mean--
That's enough.
Six speed independent
rear suspension.
Some ten-year-old tires.
-Yeah, those might
need change.
-[both laugh]
Yeah, fueling is great,
timing is great.
It's all great news.
I know that we've had
our struggles with this
thing for sure
just kind of picking up
the pieces.
And figuring out where
somebody left off
a long time ago.
I know that
it hasn't been easy,
but it looks like
we've made it to the end
of the mechanical stuff
and this car
can get out of here.
Pretty much.
Take it for a street drive,
make sure it doesn't do
anything goofy on the road,
-and then--
-I'm in.
Yeah, we should be
good to roll.
In here and on the dyno,
I think we're gonna be
just fine.
-Sweet.
-Cool.
Works for me.
-On to the next, dude.
Good job.
-You know it.
Now that our
to-do list is done.
It's time to get this car out
on the road and do some
test driving.
[exhilarating instrumental
music playing]
[engine revving]
I'm gonna start another log.
[Dave] This Bel Air came to us
with a long laundry list
of almost finished projects
that needed to be completed
and get it running final.
And now, that it's done, well,
proof is in the pudding, baby.
If this 55 has been dialed in
the way we've meant
to have it done,
it should be no problem,
it should be easy driving.
[engine accelerating]
This car will get us
in trouble, man.
This was here before I was,
and from what I was told,
this thing basically
rolled in off of a trailer,
not running with a basket
full of parts, right?
Yeah. I think more like
a shopping cart full of parts.
Shopping cart.
[engine accelerating]
[Kyle] The steering was pretty
jacked up when it got here.
But I mean, it feels smooth.
You can fully turn through
the whole range of motion.
Biggest thing I think,
we'll just make sure
that the cruise
is real nice, right?
Because ultimately,
this is a street car.
Granted it has
a 632 cubic inch
Nelson race engine
in it, but...
-what's the fun if you can't
drive it, right?
-Right.
Your tune looks great,
by the way.
Yeah, you can brake the tires
in every gear.
[Kyle] Runs pretty good.
[laughs]
