Can't hear a word the man's saying.

- Why isn't it working?
- Something's jamming the signal.

[d*ck] Electromagnetic distortion.
Isn't it?

Absolutely right.
The question is, how and why?

Nothing but bills for you,
I'm afraid.

- Hmm.
- But more excitingly...

look what arrived for you three.

[wistful music playing]

- Are they from our mum and dad?
- Mm-hmm.

They're in Egypt.
They've been riding camels!

And they took a cruise
down the Nile.

And they met King Farouk.
He sacked his entire cabinet.

Says here they'll be back

How was your walk?
Where'd you go?

[George] Just around.

Anne and I are cooking dinner
tonight. Cottage pie.

Kind of a last supper

We'd much prefer to stay here.

You're a soggy old dog, ain't ya?

[George] What's your name?

[Great Supremo sighing]
I have many names.

I've got the one
that I was born with,

though I haven't used that
in years,

there was one fine lady
what called me darling,

though she is long gone now,

and there's one, a young 'un...

who calls me Papa.

And it's her I miss the most.

But most people know me
by the name

that I will go out with.
[blows sharply]

The Great Supremo. For you.

- [Timmy whines softly]
- Thank you.

And who are those people
chasing you?

Them, they are agents of evil.

And they mean
to take something from me

what doesn't belong to them.

Something
that I am the guardian of.

Right...

No, don't doubt
that I'm in earnest.

There are men who would k*ll
to get their hands on it.

- [Julian] George!
- [Timmy whining]

[whispering]
Did you tell anyone about me?

- I didn't tell anyone.
- [shushes]

- [Julian] Timmy!
- [Timmy barks]

[whispering] Timmy, come back.

Ah, Timmy! Come here.
Good boy. I knew it was you.

- [Timmy whines softly]
- [Julian] George? Huh...

- [George] What are you doing?
- What are you doing?

- Why are you hiding from me?
- Just go away. Please.

You never say please.
What's going on?

- Cross your heart, hope to die.
- [Julian] Come on, George,

- He doesn't have an axe.

Uh, what if he left it
in his last victim?

He's just a lonely guy
who's in trouble.

Ah, all right.

We give him food and shelter
for one night, but that's it.

And we don't tell my parents.

Deal.

[snorts, smacks lips]

[breathes heavily]

[George] I found him in the woods.

- [snores]
- Why is he dressed like a wizard?

Mm. He calls himself
"the Great Supremo."

- [sighs] I am the Great Supremo.
- [whimsical music playing]

Conjurer, escapologist,
and mesmerist.

An expert in the strange
and unknown powers

which surround us
in this world and the next.

The greatest showman
the circus has ever seen.

- What tricks do you do?
- What tricks do...

[clears throat] Once,
I was locked inside a suitcase

and thrown into the Danube
with nothing but a pencil,

this pencil, between my teeth,

only to emerge ten minutes later
to rapturous applause.

[chuckles]

Can you show us
a magic trick now, then?

[Great Supremo] You wanna see
a magic trick now, then?

Nothing in my hands.
And there is nothing up my sleeves.

And yet...

- Ace of hearts.
- [d*ck] That's spades.

Oh, my mistake.

Ace of hearts. [laughs]

- There you go.
- [d*ck] That's not magic, though.

- Huh?
- [giggles softly]

[d*ck] That's not magic.

It was in your other hand
the entire time.

[sighs] Well...

you're right, boy.

And you are obviously wise
beyond your years.

But do not let the fact
that I'm a terrible magician

let you believe
that magic does not exist.

Because it does, boy.

And I've seen it
with these eyes.

The very eyes
what are looking at you.

- [car tyres approaching]
- [car horn honking]

What's this?

You...

- you betrayed me, boy.
- Hey, hey, no one's betrayed you.

[exhales shakily, breathes heavily]

[birds chirping]

[car door opening]

Thank you.

- [Fanny] Good afternoon.
- Hello. I'm sorry to trouble you.

My name is Dr Graves,
from the Greencoat Institute.

How can I help?

[Dr Graves] We seem
to have lost one of our patients.

It's very careless of us.

- Oh.
- [Dr Graves] But don't worry.

He's, uh...
He's harmless enough, really.

He's just terribly confused.

And we think he might be
hiding on your land.

- [Fanny] Oh!
- Would it be okay

if one of my men had a look around?

Yes. Of course. Won't you come in?

[mysterious music playing]

[Great Supremo gulping]

[exhales deeply]

They mean me harm.

If they find me,
they'll lock me up.

They will if you run.
That's why you need to stay here.

We'll keep you safe.

George is right. We'll protect you.

You'd do that for me?

[George] We've got the perfect
hiding place right here.

These are bad people.
They say I'm mad, but I'm not.

They mean to steal from me.

Steal something
that doesn't belong to them.

Something they must never
be allowed to have.

What?

The Eye of the Sunrise.

It must be protected.

These people will stop
at nothing to get it.

But you... you're just children.
You mustn't get involved.

We are involved.

We made a promise,
and we don't break our promises.

How long have you worked
at the institute?

I started there
years after the w*r.

Nearly every patient we treated
suffered from a trauma

of some sort or another.
When the Army closed it down,

I turned it into a private
psychiatric hospital.

Oh! Can't have been easy
to get the funding.

My patron
was the father of a patient.

[Quentin] Sorry.

I heard you've been doing some
pretty cutting-edge work up there.

Yes, great advancements
are being made

in the fields of psychiatry
and psychoanalysis.

Freud and Jung
have opened the door

to a world
of infinite possibilities.

Whatever neuroses
a patient displays,

however ingrained it might seem,
it feels like just a matter of time

before we find
the correct treatment.

Although, sadly,
that's yet to happen

for the patient
I'm currently searching for.

- [radio static interference]
- Should we be worried?

He's not dangerous,
but he's confused,

and that can make him
a little unpredictable.

He suffers from the most
vivid delusions and paranoia.

Persecution complex.

And you're chasing him
across the countryside.

[chuckles softly] Quite.

Huh.

- Would you like some tea?
- There's no milk.

Vanished.
It's the strangest thing, you know,

I could have sworn we had
a full bottle this morning.

Is something wrong, Dr Graves?

I noticed some children
when I arrived.

Would it be all right
if I spoke to them?

You never know,
they might have seen something.

Of course. Follow me.

Thank you, thank you.
I'll be quiet.

What's he blabbing on about?

What's this thing he says
they're trying to steal from him?

The Eye of the Sunrise? No idea.

[d*ck]
Sounds like an ancient artefact.

Mayan or Aztec, maybe.
They both worshipped the sun.

It could just as easily be

the name of a racehorse
or a pub, for all we know.

- They're coming! Quick!
- Not a word.

[footsteps approaching]

Children...

this is Dr Graves.

She wants to ask you
a few questions.

Dr Graves,
this is my daughter George,

and her cousins,
Julian, d*ck, and Anne.

- [Julian] Hello.
- [d*ck] How do you do?

- [Anne] Hi.
- Hello, children.

Dr Graves is looking
for one of her patients.

Have any of you seen
anything suspicious?

Uh... no, we haven't seen
anything, have we?

No. I've been making cottage pie.

I've been helping Uncle Quentin
with the radio.

I've barely started packing,
so...

Would you mind if I spoke
to them alone for a moment?

- Uh...
- Only for a moment.

- Of course.
- Thank you.

Don't worry.
You're not in any trouble.

Neither is my patient. He's just...

He's a little confused...

and I'm worried about him.

Mr Franken isn't very well,
you see.

That's why I want to get him back
so we can look after him.

[Anne] We understand
your situation, Dr Graves,

but we'd tell you
if we'd seen him, wouldn't we?

I'm sure you would...

because you all seem
like very sensible young people.

[tense music playing]

Do you know the story
of Hansel and Gretel?

You do.

Well, they were sensible
young children like you,

weren't they?

But then they got lost
in the woods.

And when they saw the house
made of gingerbread,

they didn't realise
that a witch lived inside.

They were so hungry

that they allowed
themselves to be lured in

by the promise
of something nice to eat

when, really, the witch
just wanted to gobble them up.

[chuckles]

Look, all I'm trying to say
is that this man may look harmless,

but make no mistake, he's not.

So, if you've seen something...

you need to tell me right now.

You've seen him, haven't you?

No?

You need to tell me where he is.

[Franken] Leave her alone.

I'll come quietly.

[thrilling music playing]

That's enough!

That's enough.
Check his pockets, please.

I know what you're looking for,
and you won't find it in here.

[Dr Graves] Thank you, Bradley.

If you'd like to help
Mr Franken to the car.

[Franken]
I'll never tell you where it is!

You'll have to k*ll me first.

I thought you said
he wasn't dangerous.

He's not.

- [car door closing]
- He's just confused.

Don't worry,
he'll be all right now.

- Thank you for your cooperation.
- Can we visit him?

No, I'm afraid
that won't be possible.

- Why not?
- [menacing music playing]

[Dr Graves]
Visiting hours at the institute

are extremely restricted.

You're locking him up
for no reason!

[car door opening]

Sorry to have caused
such a disturbance

to you and your family.

Professor, Mrs Barnard...

children.

[car door opening]

- [Quentin] George!
- [car engine revving]

I believe in you.
You're the Great Supremo.

[tense music playing]

Thank you.

Evening, Mr Roberts.

[Mr Roberts]
Good evening, Miss Graves.

You know I'm not mad.

Deep down in your heart,
you... you know it,

if you have one at all.

I may be a weak man,
I may have lied and cheated...

I've even stolen once or twice
when I really needed to.

But I am compos mentis...

the full shilling...

and I'm in full possession
of my marbles.

And you have no right
to keep me here.

You'll stay here until I decide
to release you, Mr Franken,

marbles or no marbles.

And I'll tell you why.
Because you're not going anywhere

until you tell me
where you hid the diamond.

[menacing music playing]

It's a little late for dinner,
I think, Bradley.

Mr Franken will be tired.

Lights off and an early night.

There's plenty
for you to be thinking about.

Oh, and you can have the milk
in the morning.

- [light switch clicking]
- [door closing]

- [keys jangling]
- [door lock clicking]

[owl hooting]

[radio whirring, humming]

[cutlery clinking]

Mm. Hmm...

[radio continues whirring, humming]

- It's for the best, darling.
- Don't say that.

[Quentin]
That should be enough. [hums]

- [distorted music plays over radio]
- Hmm... [clicks tongue]

Thank you.

[distorted music plays over radio]

[birds chirping]

[menacing music playing]

- [keys jangling]
- [doorknob rattling]

[Dr Graves] Morning, Mr Franken.

Thank you, Bradley.

I trust you're feeling rested
after your little adventure.

- I've got nothing to say to you.
- [Dr Graves] That's a shame.

Cos I was hoping
we might have a little chat.

What about?

The Eye of the Sunrise, Mr Franken.

- Where is it now?
- I'm not gonna tell you anything.

[Dr Graves] You will.

Maybe not straight away,
but you will eventually.

All I need to do
is find out what you hold dear.

Clearly that's not yourself,
that much is obvious.

But, you know, everyone
has something that they cherish.

It could be their reputation...

or money.

Or it could be as simple
as a family member,

a... a wife or... or a child.

Your daughter.

Perhaps she might
be able to help us.

Don't hurt her.

I've hidden it.
I'll tell you where it is.

- [door closing]
- Where did you find him?

[Dr Graves]
We picked him up on the coast.

A place called Kirrin.

Oh, yes. I know it very well.
Beautiful down there. Any fuss?

Gave some children a bit
of a fright, but nothing major.

Oh, glad to see
you've got everything in hand.

Last thing we need
is the authorities

kicking up a stink.

Before you know it,
the locals will be here

with their torches and pitchforks.

I'm well aware of the pressure,
Sir Lincoln.

Oh, yes, of course you are.
'Course you are.

I'll leave it to you, Rosamund.

- [George] There? Where?
- Huh? The circus!

- The circus! [chuckles]
- [laughs]

Tomorrow at noon, on the green!

- It's gonna be a...

[chuckles] Ooh! Ah...

- [chuckles softly]
- [bicycle horn honking]

- [radio static interference]
- [whimsical music plays over radio]

What's all this?

[Quentin] It's what's been
interfering with our reception.

We boosted the antenna
so we could hear what it was.

- Mm-hmm.
- Where's it coming from?

Now, that's stage two.
But now that we know what it is,

it shouldn't be too hard
to find out where it is.

Great. Then maybe we can listen
to the news in peace.

Have any of you children
seen your cousin? Ah!

The most amazing thing!
The circus is coming to town!

Oh, it's a shame that your cousins
will have to miss it.

They can't miss it, Dad.
You have to let us go together.

- Please.
- But we're dropping them off

at the train station
this afternoon.

They've got to stay one more night.

Mum, can't you ring
Uncle Jack and Aunt Gillian?

It's just the circus, darling.
[chuckles]

It's not! It's much more
important than that.

Listen,

I know I've been acting
a bit strange recently.

I admit it. I've been angry.

I don't want them to leave.

If you just let us go
to the circus together,

just to have one last thing...

[emotional music playing]

...I think I'll be able to...

you know.

Process it better?

Exactly.

[Quentin] Well, um...

Ah... mm.

[exhales sharply] Well,
I suppose I could give Jack a call.

What's so special
about the circus, George?

I mean, I like the acrobats
and the candyfloss,

but I don't get why
you're quite so excited.

Let's just see if Mum can swing it.

- [Fanny speaking indistinctly]
- There are clowns at circuses.

- I don't like clowns.
- What's wrong with clowns?

Exaggerated facial features,
lack of emotional signals,

unpredictable movement patterns,

pale make-up, invoking infection,
blight, injury or death.

Jack has agreed
you can stay one more night.

- Brilliant. Thanks, Mum.
- Uh-huh. Hmm.

Now, can you tell us
what this is about?

- All right. Look at this.
- [Fanny speaking indistinctly]

"Circus. Circus. Circus."

[George]
That's what he was looking for.

The Great Supremo.

It means he wasn't mad,
he was telling the truth.

Maybe he's telling the truth
about everything.

- He's being held against his will?
- [George] Not just that.

[gentle music playing]

What if the treasure
he was talking about

was real as well?

The Eye of the Sunrise.

We're going home tomorrow, George.

[Anne] Julian's right.

We don't have time
for another adventure.

[mellow electronic music playing]

There's nobody else to help him.

We've got to find this thing
before that doctor does.

Come on, what do you say?

All right. But there'd better
not be any clowns.

[eerie circus music playing]

[horn honks lightly]

[indistinct chatter]

[laughs]

- [laughs]
- [clown 1] Ooh! Ooh!

Maybe we should ask around,

see if anyone knows
what happened to him.

- Good idea.
- [horn honking]

We can start
at the candyfloss seller.

- [George] Whoa!
- [horn honking]

[indistinct chatter]

Wait a minute, I know that guy.

I don't think I can do this.

They're clowns, d*ck.
They're supposed to be funny.

- [horn honks]
- [clown 2] Oh!

Hello. We met on the hill.

Oh! Glad you came!
Uh, monkey or dog?

- Um, dog. Thanks.
- [Bingo] Poodle?

A poodle would be great.

Um, I was just wondering,
do you know the Great Supremo?

[tense music playing]

I wouldn't say we were close.
He's been gone a few weeks now.

Any idea where
we might find his caravan?

[accordion playing in distance]

You want my advice?
You're a bunch of kids at a circus,

get yourself some candyfloss,
go for a ride, have some fun,

and stay out of trouble.

[chuckles softly]

Maybe we should split up.

I'll talk to the ringmaster.

And then, d*ck,
you try the box office.

And, George...

[thrilling music playing]

[George] Hey! Wait!

I just want to talk to you!

[brooding music playing]

[jack-in-a-box laughs raucously]

[slow clown music playing]

[tense music playing]

[indistinct chatter]

[sighs]

- [car engine stalling]
- [radio static interference]

[distorted clown music
playing over radio]

I could have sworn...

Hmm...

[car engine revving]

[radio static interference]

- Are you sure about this?
- Oh, certain.

This is definitely
where the signal's coming from.

["London Bridge Is Falling Down"
plays in distance]

There doesn't appear
to be a doorbell.

Stop being such a wet blanket.

[tense music playing]

[Quentin] Ah.

["London Bridge Is Falling Down"
plays loudly through gramophone]

[needle scratches over disk]

I think we've had enough of that.

Look at this. "People of Britain...

your government is lying to you."

"The time has come for us all
to rise up against oppression

and tear... tear down
the state that controls us."

Bit extreme.

Hmm. Hmm.

This thing's got the capacity
to run up to 500,000 watts!

That's enough power
to supply the city of Exeter.

I think we should notify
the authorities.

You're being very assertive
about this, darling.

Well, I like to listen
to the morning news

while I eat my toast and marmalade,

and I don't appreciate it
being interrupted.

Okay.

Whoa...

[accordion playing in distance]

Ah, so this is where
you've been hiding.

[d*ck] Did you find
the Eye of the Sunrise?

- Nope.
- Neither have we.

This caravan's private property.

You were with the clowns earlier.

- [Jo] So?
- Why'd you run away?

[Jo] What's it to you?

We're looking
for the Great Supremo.

We're friends of his.

Prove it.

[d*ck] He taught us a magic trick.

Hold this.

Look. Nothing in my hands.
Nothing in my sleeves.

[mysterious music playing]

[Anne] d*ck... [sighing]

- You need to leave.
- [George] Wait.

He left this.

How come
I've never seen you before?

We only met him yesterday.

Where was he? Was he okay?

[George] He's fine.

But he's being held
against his will.

Are you his daughter?

I'm George. This is Julian,
d*ck, Anne, and Timmy.

We're here to help
you get your father back.

We think they're looking
for something that belongs to him.

The Eye of the Sunrise.
Only, we don't know what it is.

It's the diamond
Dad uses to hypnotise people.

Do you know where it is now?

[Jo]
Dad never lets it out of his sight.

It's the source of all his power.

Wherever he is,
that's where it'll be.

That's the thing, though,
he hasn't got it.

We think maybe he knew someone
was going to try and steal it,

and maybe he hid it somewhere.

Well, he definitely had it
on the night he went missing.

Do you remember any specific
details about that night?

It was really busy.

Normally we only do eight shows,
but that night we did ten.

[crowd applauding]

[carnival music playing]

Behold the Eye of the Sunrise.

A priceless diamond
bestowed to me by the Tsarina...

as she fled the revolution
in Russia.

Once belonging
to the infamous Rasputin...

and, before him,
the Medici family in Florence.

It's capable of giving
extreme, huge power

to those willing
to open themselves up to it.

And with it, I have helped
people cure sickness,

summon up
unheard-of physical strength...

and even access past lives.

But we don't expect you
to believe moi.

No, no, no, no.
For this, we will need a volunteer.

No.

No.

[crowd chuckling softly]

[Franken] You, madam.

[crowd applauding]

Then this last volunteer...

she got pulled in deep.

Your arms are becoming heavy.

Your eyes are heavy.

And soon you will be asleep.

Schlafen. [clears throat]

Listen to the words
of the Great Supremo.

[mystical music playing]

[crowd gasping]

[crowd whispering indistinctly]

She offered Dad a king's ransom
after that for the diamond...

- [speaks indistinctly]
- ...but he wasn't having any of it.

Listen, there is no way
you're getting this.

Now, get out! Out!

[Joe]
Told her she could keep her money.

That's the thing about my dad.

He doesn't like people
trying to push him around.

What did she look like...

the woman your dad argued with?

Well,
she said that she was a doctor,

but she definitely did not
look like a doctor to me.

I thought she was scary.

Definitely Dr Graves.

What happened after the show?

I came back to the caravan.

I always count the takings
before bed.

The next morning...

Dad was gone.

He must have hidden it
before Graves got him.

Any idea what your dad did
after you left?

[Jo] He wanted
to talk things through with Bingo.

Who's Bingo?

I told him to take the money.

The amount she was offering,
he could have got out,

built himself a house,
and settled down.

But he wouldn't hear of it.

Did he give you the diamond
to look after?

I'd like to think
he would have done,

that he could have trusted me
if he was in trouble,

- but he didn't.
- [indistinct chatter]

I told him, "If you don't want
to sell it, don't sell it."

He was worried, you see.
Thought they might come back.

So, we had a couple of drinks,

threw some darts
down at Billy Pop-Pop's,

and then he went home.

- Who's Billy Pop-Pop?
- He runs the dart game.

You throw a dart,
the balloon goes pop.

Three darts to win a prize.

This is hopeless.
The diamond could be anywhere.

[balloon popping]

Maybe one
of the ponies swallowed it.

Maybe the Great Supremo
swallowed it!

Why would my dad swallow
the diamond?

So the evil doctor couldn't get
her hands on it.

[Jo] You never said
that she was evil.

It's just a figure of speech.

I didn't want this teddy.

- I wanted that one.
- [sighs] Yeah, well, I did my best.

[pensive music playing]

When did you get that bear?

Dad gave it to me
the night he went away.

- I think I can feel it.
- Pass it to me.

Well, careful, d*ck.

- [George] Is it in there?
- It's a delicate operation.

[teddy squeaks]

- I've found something.
- What is it?

The Eye of the Sunrise!

[mystical music playing]

[circus music playing in distance]

[tense music playing]

- We need to go the other way.
- Wait.

If we give it to her,
maybe she'll let him go.

I don't think
we should trust that doctor.

Maybe we should discuss this
somewhere else.

[Julian] Good idea.

[tense music playing]

[d*ck] Where are we going?

- [Jo] This way.
- [Julian] Come on, Timmy!

[Dr Graves] Hey!

I know you're in here, children.

I just want to talk to you.

We know what you want.

You can have the diamond,
but only if you release her father.

Do you have it?

You want to see the diamond?

I'll show it to you.

Give it to me.

[George] Not until her dad's free.

I changed my mind. I need both.

I'll give it to you.
But before I do...

I want you to look
very closely at it.

Can you see it?

You are not going to take
the diamond.

I'm not going to take the diamond.

[Jo] You are going to let us go.

You can go.

[mirror shatters]

Thank you, Bradley.

- [indistinct chatter]
- [performers playing instruments]

- Where now?
- Anywhere's better than that maze.

[Timmy barks]

Welcome, welcome!
Quick, quick, quick.

Sit yourselves down in here.

I heard you've been making quite
a mess out there, haven't you?

Don't you worry,
I'll get rid of them for you.

Did you see what happened
in the maze?

It's like she just froze.

She was hypnotised
by the diamond.

That's not possible.

You can't hypnotise someone
that quickly.

It's not a magical spell

that you can just cast
on people like that.

Right, that's all sorted.

Now, we need to put
that diamond somewhere safe.

Here.

Maybe we should take it
out of the bear first.

Good thinking. I'll do the honours.

Sorry, kids, but you've got no idea
how hard it is to make ends meet.

Well, you have
remarkable spirit, children...

but it's time to leave this
to the grown-ups.

- Thank you, Bingo.
- [pensive music playing]

Come along, Bradley.

Now, do you see
why I don't like clowns?

Give it up, kid.
Live to laugh another day.

- [tense music playing]
- Hey! Come back!

[car engine revving]

[Anne] What happened to George?

I don't know, but I've got
a really bad feeling.

Uh, just a minute, Bradley.

Another patient.

- How fascinating.
- [George] I'm not a patient.

I know what you've done,
and I'm going to stop you.

Such vivid delusions.

You've come to the right place.

[Sir Lincoln]
She'll be here soon now.

She's a remarkable woman.
[chuckles]

She never stops, you know?

Full-time job,
running the institute.

You don't have to wait up
with us, Sir Lincoln.

[Sir Lincoln] Oh, nonsense.
Nonsense.

You must be scared
out of your minds.

I had a son. I know what it's like.
Uh, that is to say,

I know what you're going
through right now.

It's the worst thing.

The absolute worst.

I'm so sorry to have
kept you waiting.

I... I was with a patient.

[Quentin] Not at all. We're sorry
to have come so late.

They've lost their daughter,
Rosamund.

Yes, yes, Bradley said.

Of course, I'm terribly sorry
to hear that.

How can I help?

[Fanny] We have reason
to believe she might be here.

An extraordinary notion.

[chuckles] I'm afraid
I don't quite follow.

They think she might have stowed
away in the back of your truck.

Goodness!

Why do you think that?

[Fanny] Were you at the circus
earlier today?

Yes. Yes, I was there,
dealing with the fallout

from that patient
who's thankfully back in our care.

- [Fanny] Hmm.
- [Dr Graves] But I...

I don't see what that's got to do
with your daughter.

Well, her cousins said
that they saw you there

and there was
some sort of altercation.

[Dr Graves] Yes, I did see them,

but I'd hardly call it
an altercation.

I mean, of course,
we can have a look.

No, uh, we've already done that.
There's no sign of her.

- So, you haven't seen her, then?
- No.

Not since the circus.

But I think I've got a pretty good
idea of what's going on here.

Can I ask, is it unusual
for her to run off like this?

Ah, well...

George is certainly
very independent-minded,

but it's the circumstances
of her disappearance

that have given us
cause for concern.

Well, do you think
she might have had a row

with the other children, perhaps?

Uh, it's not beyond
the realms of possibility.

Not according to her cousins.

Well, she certainly seemed to be
in quite an agitated state

when I met her at the cottage.

She was upset.

But does she normally
express herself so...

forcefully when things
don't turn out how she'd like?

Well, perhaps there's some kind
of underlying anxiety.

Might she be worried
about going back to school...

or the end of summer holidays?
Her cousins leaving?

I'm not interested
in your interpretations, Doctor.

I just want to find our daughter.

Oh, I don't mean
to worry you unduly.

No, I'm sure she's
a perfectly normal young girl.

She probably ran off
to be on her own for a bit.

You know, in all likelihood,
she'll have got cold and hungry,

and she'll be waiting for you
when you get back home.

Hmm.

Well...

Thank you for your time, Doctor.

Um...

Like you say,
probably she'll be waiting for us

- when we get home.
- [Dr Graves] Yes, exactly.

And if, later on,
once things have settled a bit,

you feel that she might benefit
from having someone to talk to,

my door's always open.

- [Quentin] We'll keep that in mind.
- Yes.

[Quentin] And, uh, thank you.

[mysterious music playing]

- [sighs]
- Let me go.

I can't do that, I'm afraid.
Not right now, anyway.

Look, you're clearly
a very determined young woman.

It's an admirable quality,

but it's one
that's completely irrelevant here.

You see, we have certain, um,
structures and systems in place,

which are immovable.

And the sooner you understand that,

the better it will be
for both of us.

It's time to go to bed now, George.

Remember that you're still a child.

You may not like it,

but sometimes you just
have to do what you're told

and let the grown-ups
make the decisions.

Okay, I'll go to bed.

Just, um...

Just try to get some sleep, okay?

Things will seem a lot clearer
in the morning.

They always do.

[door locking]

[sighs]

- [car approaching]
- [whimpers]

Mm.

- No luck?
- [Quentin tuts]

She's done this sort of thing
before, of course.

Three nights, I think,
was the record,

after she got expelled.

It was two.

But it was in the middle of winter.

Yeah. Found her huddled up
in a sheep pen

with a load
of Bluefaced Leicesters.

[chuckles]
She'd given all of them names.

Thick as thieves, they were.

Anyway, the point is,
it's not out of character.

She didn't run away, though,
Uncle Quentin.

Something's happened to her.

[menacing music playing]

It's been a long night.

I think we all just
need some sleep.

Would it be okay if Jo stayed over?

[Fanny] Of course, she can.

["London Bridge Is Falling Down"
playing over radio]

[radio static interference]

[revolutionary over radio]
Tear off your chains,

take arms and revolt!
We must destroy the state...

Not at breakfast, d*ck.

[radio turns off]

When did it flip
from nursery rhymes

- to an angry man shouting?
- I'm not sure, exactly.

Though we did, uh, track down
where it was coming from,

took it to the police, showed them
on the Ordnance Survey,

so it's up to them now.

Though I don't hold out much hope.

Are you okay
if I run you back to the circus

in a couple of hours, Jo?

- Thank you, Mrs Barnard.
- [Fanny] Oh, it's my pleasure.

Are you going to be okay?

The circus looks after me.

The acrobats do
all the cooking and cleaning,

the ringmaster
teaches my lessons,

I get to ride the ponies
whenever I want,

and I'm training
to be an illusionist like Dad.

Oh, okay!

- [Julian] Aunt Fanny.
- Mm?

I know we're supposed
to be leaving today,

but we'd like to stay
and help find George.

That's a very kind offer, Julian.

I know how worried
you all must be,

but your parents are expecting you
on the 3:50 from Swanage.

I know it's sad
that you might not get the chance

to say goodbye to George,
but you'll see her again soon.

But what if she doesn't come back?

What if she's lost?

Or stuck somewhere?

She'll come home.

And if she's not back
by lunchtime...

I'm going to the police.

[Dr Graves] I've seen
what it's capable of

with my own eyes!

I felt your hands reach
inside my mind!

It's... it's a cheap trick,
that's all.

A... a parlour game.

No, people only think that
because you pretend it is.

But it's real and you're going
to show me how it works.

[Franken] It's not real.

I let you believe that,
but it's all been a lie.

[Dr Graves] No, no, you haven't
seen what I've seen.

Thousands of young men
walking around like zombies,

after what they experienced
in France.

If I could reach inside
the minds of my patients,

if... if I could access
their... their thoughts

and their... their dreams,
their repressed memories,

then I could use this
as a therapeutic method.

Uh, right? I... I could...

I could cure the pathologies
of an entire generation.

I could free mankind
from the shackles of neuroses.

Listen, I can wave this around
all day long,

it's not going to make
any difference.

It's as fake as a two-bob note.

- As am I!
- No!

[pants]

It's not supposed to break.

Diamonds are the hardest
material known to man.

Well, there's an easy
explanation for that.

It's not a real diamond.

I'm not a hypnotist.
It... None of it's real.

[Julian] Maybe we should ask
the people

from the circus for help.

We could get the acrobats
to climb in through the windows.

Good idea, Anne.

Send in the clowns,
scare the guards,

take over the asylum.

[Julian] Have you got
any better ideas?

[Anne] We never should have
let George go off on her own.

If we were all together,

I'm sure we could come up
with something.

Here, Jo.

I was wondering
if you'd like to keep her,

to replace your teddy.

The one that got its head
ripped off.

I like that one.

You can't have Daisy Mae.
She's my favourite.

But you can have this one.

[mysterious music playing]

Let me have Daisy Mae.

You can have Daisy Mae.

Thanks, Anne,
that's really kind of you.

Wait a minute.
What just happened?

I gave her a doll. So, what?

You gave her Daisy Mae,

your favourite doll
three years running.

d*ck's not even allowed
to touch Daisy Mae.

He's right. You would never
willingly do that.

You're acting
like I'm really selfish.

This isn't about you.

This is about her.

[George] Supremo. Can you hear me?

Mother, is that you?

- [George] It's me, George.
- George?

What are you doing here?

I came to rescue you.

[whispers] What's the plan?

Um... there isn't one.
They caught me.

[sighs]

George, you're a brave girl,

but you shouldn't have taken
such a risk.

Not for an old rapscallion like me.

There's got to be a way
we can get out of here.

[soft music playing]

I fear Dr Graves won't make
the same mistake twice.

What about your cousins?
Do they know you're here?

I don't think so.

They've probably gone home by now.

[sighs] It's just us.

Well...

don't give up just yet.

We're in a pickle.

No doubt about that.

But hope can be found in the most
unlikely of places, George.

- [keys jingling]
- [door opening]

One of our guests
has asked to see you.

[mysterious music playing]

I knew you'd come.

I've seen a version
of this moment before, you see.

In the cave.

When we last met.

Wentworth?

What are you doing here?

[scoffs]

Recovering.

At least, that's what
they think I'm doing.

[chuckles softly]

What are you in for?

I'm being held here
against my will.

[Thomas] Huh.

Weren't there five
of you last time?

What happened to your chums?

It's just me.

Let's go for a walk.

There are things
we need to discuss.

I'm not going for a walk
with you.

You will, though.

Because I know what's brought you
to this institution.

And I have some information,
very important information,

that will have a direct effect
on subsequent events.

Ginger beer, sir?

[Thomas] Maybe later, Justin.

[unsettling music playing]

[Thomas] I'm sorry about
trying to k*ll you before.

It seemed like the right thing
to do at the time.

It all worked out
for the best in the end though.

For you, if not for me.

You see, ultimate knowledge,

the kind that was bestowed upon me,

turns out to be more
of a burden than I thought.

That's why I don't mind
being here so much.

Keeps me out of trouble.

More or less.

The present needs
only the slightest of shoves

for the future to veer off
in the wrong direction.

That's where you come in.

I have no idea
what you're talking about.

The Eye of the Sunrise.

It wasn't my idea originally.

I may have encouraged
the good doctor a bit.

And she is a good doctor,
by the way.

A little naive,
but I genuinely think

she wants to make the world
a better place.

She's holding me prisoner!

Nobody's perfect.

That's the point, you see.
I... I tried to stay out of it,

but I must have inadvertently
let something slip

to another interested party,
and now they're involved.

And that could be a big problem.

Unless you do something about it.

What I'm trying to say is,

the identity of our real enemy
is not yet apparent.

Not to you or Dr Graves.

She's completely oblivious,
unlike me.

Because you've seen the future.

Precisely.

[tense music playing]

And you're not going
to tell me because...

I've caused enough trouble already.

But a life stands to be lost,

and it's not a life
I'm willing to lose.

Not yet.

You'll help me save a life,
won't you, George?

You need to tell me
who it is that's in danger.

You'll find out soon enough.

[snaps fingers]

Bradley, you can take her back
to her room now, please.

Why are you doing this?
What's in it for you?

I have my reasons.

We'll meet again, George.

At least once.

I have to make eye contact
with them.

I have to really, really focus.

And they have to want to be
hypnotised in the first place.

[Julian] Why didn't you tell us?

Dad made me promise
not to tell anyone.

- What about the diamond?
- That was his idea.

It's just his way
of keeping me safe.

People find out,
they get scared.

People don't like things
that they're scared of.

My mum had to keep it a secret.
So did my granny before her.

Are you hypnotising us now?

I'm not supposed to use it.

You have to. Don't you see?

This is how we rescue
George and your father.

But what if it doesn't work,
though?

Then at least
we would have tried our best.

[gentle music playing]

We owe them that much, don't we?

I don't think I can do it.

Yes, you can.

All you have to do is
look them in the eye

- and tell them what to do.
- [sighs] As far as we know.

Can I help you?

[mysterious music playing]

You're going to take us
to the Great Supremo,

and you're going to let him go.

[door closing]

Is everything all right, Bradley?

Bradley's taking us
to see her father.

And then our cousin George.

Well, I suppose
if everything's above board.

Bradley?

- Is he all right?
- [Timmy barking]

Do you work here?

I'm the owner.

Sir Lincoln Aubrey.

Oh, well,

something terrible's been
happening underneath your roof.

And this man's helping us
bring it to an end.

- You mean she is actually here?
- [Timmy barks]

I think Timmy knows
where George is.

[Jo] Wait.

Give them the key to the room
where you're holding George.

- [uplifting music playing]
- [door unlocking]

- [whimpers]
- No way!

- What are you guys doing here?
- We came to rescue you!

- Jo!
- I gave away a secret. I'm sorry.

Don't worry.
Don't you worry about anything.

Are you all right? Mm? What?

Thank you.
Am I... am I being rescued?

Let me look at you.
[chuckles softly]

Bradley, what on earth's going on?

Bradley?

[mysterious music playing]

It's her, isn't it?

She's the Eye of the Sunrise.

It's remarkable.

You stay away from my daughter!

Bradley, restrain the doctor.

What? What? No!
No, no, I understand now.

You were just...
you were trying to protect her,

but you need to let me study her.
She could...

she could open up our understanding
of the human mind.

Save it, Doctor.

You are finished.

[Sir Lincoln] Well, thank you
very much, Officer.

Yeah. Soon as you can.

All right. Goodbye.

Well, a couple
of uniformed officers

should be here within the hour.

I am so sorry about all this.

Dr Graves treated my son
towards the end of his life.

[chuckles] I thought
I knew her, but...

I mean, clearly, uh,
she pushed herself too far.

I blame myself.

Well, don't.

We should all count our blessings.

No one's hurt,
we're all back together again,

thanks to the kids.

Well, I... I shall assume control
until a replacement has been found,

but I can assure you,

there will be severe repercussions.
I will look into it myself.

[sighs] Well, I... I guess we all
just want to get home, don't we?

Oh, yes...
[stammers] ...quite right.

I will drive you there myself,
and I will inform your parents.

There's just one last thing
I want to do before we go.

Would that be okay?

Well, I think,
under the circumstances,

you can ask for anything you wish!
But within reason. [laughs]

I made friends
with one of the other patients.

I just want a chance
to say goodbye.

Oh, I'll arrange that
straight away.

[humming
"London Bridge Is Falling Down"]

Oh. Oh, yes.

Uh, could you ask
one of the orderlies to step in

for a second, please?

Thank you.

All right, now let's see
about getting you home.

I think we've all had
enough excitement for one day.

[whimpers]

I'm sorry
for running away like that.

[Timmy barking]

We're just glad
that you're all right.

It was wrong of me
to try and do it alone.

We do everything together.

That's why you need to see this.

[radio broadcaster]
A new Technicolor musical film,

guaranteed to delight parents
and children alike,

is set to open
in British cinemas...

[lock clicking]

- [Julian] Wentworth?
- [d*ck] What are you doing here?

[George] It's okay.

Are father and daughter
successfully reunited?

It's not over yet, though, is it?

What is he talking about, George?

- Why are we even here?
- You said there was something else.

Not something.

- Someone.
- Who?

I have to be very careful.

[George] Yeah, but I don't know
who you mean!

You said someone's in danger.
You have to tell us who.

I might turn on the wireless,

listen to a bit of jazz
before the news.

You said there was a hidden enemy.
What did you mean?

The Eye of the Sunrise is safe.

♪ London Bridge is falling down

♪ Falling down, falling down

- He's got it!
- [mysterious music playing]

Clever d*ck.

What's that tune you were singing?

"London Bridge Is Falling Down."

Sir Lincoln was humming it earlier.

That's not where I heard it.

The radio broadcast!

Did my dad ever figure out
who was behind that?

He didn't find out who.
He found out where and why.

Some maniac was trying
to brainwash people

into overthrowing the government.

- Where's Jo?
- With her dad and Sir Lincoln.

There it is. [snaps fingers]

She's got it!

Sir Lincoln's going to make Jo
hypnotise people over the radio?

It won't work, though.
She won't be able to do it.

And how do you think our enemy
is going to feel about that?

Hmm? Happy?

Or unhappy?

A child's life hangs
in the balance.

[George] Where are they going?

I don't know.
But I know a man who does.

It's all gone!
They've cleared it all up!

It's got to be here somewhere.

What we're looking
for is an Ordnance Survey map.

One that's covered in scribbles.

[Anne] How are we supposed
to find that under all this junk?

[Quentin] Where have you been?

We've been worried sick!

[George] Dad, I need you

- So is this. Come with me.

All right, fine.

Do you really expect me to believe

She didn't hypnotise the doctor.
She hypnotised the nurse.

it's not going to work,

he might do something terrible.

Maybe I don't want things to go
back to how they were before.

George...

You shouldn't have run off
like that.

I know.

I'm sorry.
I've learnt my lesson, I promise.

Please can I go out with my cousins
one last time before they go?

- Mm...

It won't work.

You can't brainwash people
with meaningless slogans.

This isn't meaningless!

This manifesto is going to save
this country

from the oppression of the state.

Now, we've spent so long
thinking barbarism is grandeur...

suffering is liberty,
and that lies are the truth.

The state is a predator,
and society is its prey.

We need to destroy it
in the name of all that is human!

[Franken] It won't work!

You can't just bully people
into believing you.

- She can't do it.
- She can!

She can!

And she will.
Or you both shall die.

[Julian] He's got a g*n.

We've got to get them
out of there.

[Anne] We can't! He'll sh**t us!

Do you remember that story
the Great Supremo told us

about the time they threw him
into the Danube in the suitcase?

[Anne] Oh, yeah,
and he escaped with just a pencil.

And how do we get it to him?

You know how Aubrey's trying
to jam the news?

What if we jammed him?

How do we jam the jammer?

[radio broadcaster]
In a turn of events

that will shock the world,

Germany and the Soviet Union
last night agreed to sign

a pact of non-aggression.

It is understood that Herr Hitler,

Herr von Ribbentrop,
and Herr von...

[electrical whirring]

["London Bridge Is Falling Down"
plays loudly through gramophone]

[radio broadcaster]
The Met in the afternoon is...

[radio static interference]

["London Bridge Is Falling Down"
plays over radio]

People of Britain,
your government is lying to you.

The time has come for us
to rise up against oppression

and tear down the state
that controls us.

Under the state,

there is no place
for authentic human life.

[tense music playing]

On three.

[all] One, two, three.

[bell tolling]

[Jo] We are the sl*ves of leaders

who know nothing
of our best interests

and wish to send our children
to their deaths.

They have done so before
and they will do so again.

Whose is this, Timmy?
Whose is this? Go!

Stop that this instant!

You're interrupting
a vital broadcast!

[g*n c*ck]

- Timmy!
- Timmy!

Timmy, that's it! Go to my dad!

Come, come. Good boy!
Good dog. Well done.

Good boy, Timmy!

It's not going to work.

She has to look people in the eye.

- Don't you understand?
- [emotional music playing]

Don't you see?

I'm doing this for you,
the next generation.

My son is buried in this graveyard.

They sent him to his death.

Now, they're going to do it
all over again.

The state must be destroyed.

You can't just brainwash
an entire nation.

It's not possible.
And if it were, it's not right.

I'll decide what's right.

Not anymore.

You need to give me the g*n.

I read what you wrote
in the manifesto.

You're angry.

You lost your boy to the w*r,

and you think no one cares,
but... but they do.

We all lost people.

It's not your fault.

It's... It's no one's fault.

Now, give me the g*n.

It's over.

[birds chirping]

[postal worker] Post!

[Quentin] I'd say
Sir Lincoln Aubrey is looking

at two to three years in jail?

What about kidnap and imprisonment?

Or the fact that he was trying
to brainwash the entire country?

You might have to manage
your expectations there.

Dr Graves will certainly go
on trial,

and she'll be struck off,
whatever happens.

And what about the other patients
at the institute?

[Quentin] They'll carry on
under new management.

They did lose a patient
in all the kerfuffle.

Really ought to tighten up
their security.

More bills, I'm afraid. [sighs]

Although there is a postcard
addressed to...

the Famous Five.

That will be for us.

- Oh.
- What?

- [Anne] Who sent it?
- [Julian] Where is it from?

It's a French stamp.
And the postmark's from Paris.

"Until our next adventure... W."

[soft music playing]

W?

Who's W?

Who do you think?

Well, before you children head
back to London,

we did have
one last treat in store.

[crowd applauding]

Your shoulders are heavy.

Your eyelids are heavy.
And soon you will be asleep.

[snaps fingers] Schlafen!

Listen to the words
of the Great Supremo.

[crowd gasping]

[Franken] And from this day forth,
you hereby agree

that the niece and the nephews
will be invited every holiday

to Kirrin Cottage,
along with their cousin George,

- and the little dog Timmy.
- [chuckling]

Every holiday.

At Kirrin Cottage.

[snaps fingers]

- Amen.
- And you're back in the room.

- [crowd applauding]
- [laughs]
