We're gonna make
this Nova Coupe
into a Nova Hardtop.
Yeah, it's gonna be badass.
Hell to the yeah, bro.
What the [bleep] was that?
We're tearing the [bleep]
out of this fender.
This is a lot
of pressure on me.
[Justin] Don't let it touch,
don't pinch it
like that, Tazz.
[Tim] Hang on.
[Roy] There's something
binding here.
We don't have any signals
up to our, to our throttle.
We don't have any signals
up to our, to our throttle.
So it runs,
but it doesn't run.
[Kenny] Yes.
It runs...
To be continued.
Holy sh--
Should I have a stogie
in my mouth or...
Jaded Nova.
[pops]
Yeah.
[Dave] When I look
at a blank canvas,
I see endless possibilities.
As the ideas come to mind,
the lines start to fall
into place
and before you know it,
we have a bitchin' ride.
and before you know it,
we have a bitchin' ride.
A bitchin' ride
has intense color...
-[laughter]
-This is gorgeous!
[Dave] . ..Performance...
[man] It's fantastic.
[Dave] ...stance,
wheels, sound.
If there's one thing that
makes our cars stand out,
ours are bitchin' rides.
-Well, it never gets old.
-[laughter]
[Dave] Boom!
Our first 1971 Nova.
It's great, you don't see
these done very often.
What we're gonna do is,
we're gonna put a little
bit of a twist of what we do.
What we're gonna do is,
we're gonna put a little
bit of a twist of what we do.
We've been working
on Eric Storz's Nova big time
and what we really
needed to do
is make this car stand out
and be different
from all the other Novas.
They never made that Nova
body style with a hardtop.
That's right, we're turning
this car into something
it's never been before.
Per, uh,
the old rendering there,
It's gonna go spoiler-less.
[Dave] We've decided
to get rid of the spoiler
on the deck-lid rear quarters
and we also pulled
the bumpers in nice and tight.
-[Dave] It looks good.
-Thanks.
Installed a ridiculously
high horsepower engine,
Installed a ridiculously
high horsepower engine,
which happened to give Eric
a lot of troubles coming up
with the right words.
Holy [bleep].
[Dave] Right?
-[Eric] Nuts.
-[Dave] It's awesome.
This is the first one
that we've ever done.
And finally,
that front valance
is definitely gonna
take it to the next level.
Looks bitchin'.
Right?
But we've definitely saved
the hardest job
of this project for last.
We're gonna make
this Nova Coupe
into a Nova Hardtop.
We have some
old window motors.
We have some
old window motors.
[Dave] Will engineered
a new way to roll the window
up and down
in the rear quarters,
which makes this
the last difficult piece
to make this a true hardtop.
So, we're gonna need
to turn it more
'cause this back corner
is almost touching.
[Dave] It definitely looks
good on paper,
but he's having
a little bit of difficulty
making this work
in the quarter panel.
Looks like it's time
for a commercial break.
No commercials just yet.
Now that we're all caught up,
it's time to bring
you back to speed
on what Will's doing.
on what Will's doing.
I'm gonna put
a dual widget arm
to widget-y the widgets
like this widget.
Then it'll just
magically work.
Ignoring all laws of physics.
Altogether.
Yeah, what he said.
Actually, hold on. I gotta...
[Dave] How goes
the battle, buddy?
[Will] Uh, the window's okay.
The motor is...
Not okay?
Not okay?
...just beginning.
-Because it's doing
this S-motion.
-[Dave] Mmm-hmm.
And where, so there's
a triangle of rollers.
If you put the pressure
way off one side,
as you're rolling
through this motion,
it drags the others.
Once you get
to a certain point,
it's just gonna lock it up.
[Dave] Oh.
So, you almost have to grab
the bottom of the triangle
and act on it there
so the top can do this.
So, to decode,
as soon as you have
three points of contact,
you have a lot of control.
I have the control
of the window,
now I'm just trying
to get the window motor
to coincide with this path
and the weight of the window
to get it to go the direction
I want it to without binding
and functioning properly.
So, in that triangle,
if you did links
instead of just--
[Will] That's what I'm,
was wondering, if I--
-[Dave] So you have
one that moves--
-Just add a link.
And then it had the ability
to shimmy shimmy
as it needs to as it comes up.
And then it had the ability
to shimmy shimmy
as it needs to as it comes up.
Yeah, I just wanna put
the force right on
that lower roller.
-[Dave] Okay.
-'Cause then the top
-can widget around
what it needs to.
-[Dave] Right.
But you're basically shoving
it by that lower roller.
And if I put the,
the one motor...
Basically, you know,
that should be for this side,
right there where it goes,
the arc is, is way out here,
way back here,
where here's my...
Basically, basically the pivot
of the motor
is right over top of my arc.
Basically, basically the pivot
of the motor
is right over top of my arc.
Is anybody else as confused
as I am right now?
Imagine it this way.
We're talking, we're still
just talking
about the window, right?
I thought we were just
talking about the window?
If we have...
Here's, and what,
what's going on right now
-is our S is running right
through this pivot.
-[Dave] Mmm-hmm.
[Will] Right? That's where
our window's going.
You don't want
the pressure way back here,
-to the back of the wheel.
-[Will] As this thing's,
-as this thing's do---
-[Dave] Right.
[Will] So, I'm gonna
reverse it,
use the other side.
[Will] So, I'm gonna
reverse it,
use the other side.
Now all of a sudden,
where our path is...
You're shoving right up
the middle of the path.
[Will] You're shoving it
right up the path.
Let it run
where it needs to go.
-[Will] Let it, let it wiggle.
-See, that's what
I would've done.
Well, I definitely
think I lost Dave,
but hopefully not the rest
of you pseudo-engineers
out there.
I'm very close.
We're in the last kinda
iteration of this.
I think if I burn
one more piece out,
then all this stuff's
gonna coincide.
It's gonna function,
like, perfect.
I got version 2, hopefully
this is the last version.
Tightened up
the track a little bit
around the guide wheels
and have lessened
the amount of jogging
to try to help with
the binding situation.
Fingers crossed that this'll
be, uh, the last version.
Through the power of robots,
all of a sudden
we have, uh, our new track.
Through the power of robots,
all of a sudden
we have, uh, our new track.
We're definitely
on the right track,
but just like any one
of these jobs,
I'm gonna keep tweaking this
until we're absolutely done.
I think this is it.
I always say,
"Where there's a Will,
there's a way."
And even though
most of the things
are starting to wrap up,
we still have a few
small details left to go.
Oh, man, that looks like
it's all together.
Oh, man, that looks like
it's all together.
-[Howard] Hey, Dave.
-Are you guys done?
Heck yeah.
-Yeah, baby!
-Ready to go.
Let's see, uh,
let's see under the hood.
Oh yeah.
[Howard] Panel's all done.
-[Dave] Nice.
-[Howard] Reservoirs.
New fasteners.
[Dave] I love how you've got
the contours on that panel,
that just really
brought that to life.
[Howard] Yeah,
it turned out good.
[Dave] It really does
look like it would've
come that way.
Super cool, I am really
thinking this car
is coming along.
k*ller stance, k*ller bumper,
k*ller stance, k*ller bumper,
fascia, jewelry box, hardtop.
This is totally a gentleman's
hot rod and just like Eric
asked for.
Now comes the big reveal.
Where there's a Will,
there's a way.
-And where there's a Howard...
-[Will] There's way.
There's a way.
-And, oh, always watch
the elbows, fellows.
-Oh, whoops.
[Dave] While we wrap up
practicing our high-fiving,
this car's now leaving
the metal shop
and going to the body shop.
It's yours now.
There's so many
custom-fabricated pieces
on this body
that the body work on this
is gonna be no joke.
So, first thing to do
is get the metal
all cleaned up,
get it sealed
and start doing the gapping.
Primer's an important
step of any build,
you basically need
to make sure
you seal the metal down,
before you start
doing the body work.
This also allows you
to see a little bit better
any areas that need
more attention.
While the guys keep
cranking on the body work,
I got some business
to attend to.
So, Eric's car is coming along
so good down there
and I've been trying
to develop a blue color
that looks kinda like
the Ferrari color,
but it's not that
Ferrari color.
but it's not that
Ferrari color.
And I've done so many
blue cars lately.
I have light blues,
I have medium blues,
I have almost black blues.
I've got the blues, man.
In fact, I have
the blues so bad,
that I actually wanted
to go back and make
a suggestion
of maybe a different color
that might be
a little bit more interesting.
Really, I think this color
has so much character to it
and it kinda falls into what
one of the original colors
for the '72 Nova was.
With no further poo-ba,
if you will?
I give to you, the jaded Nova.
I give to you, the jaded Nova.
Should I have glasses on
when I do that,
like sunglasses or something?
Okay.
So, another change
that I wanted to make
was actually
the tan color interior.
I wanted to go with something
a little bit more warm.
The exterior color
is really gonna be
very understated,
but the amount of pearl
in that thing,
man that's gonna
flop all over.
I'll get to work on
doing some samples
and we'll get 'em out to Eric
and see what he thinks.
I like it.
Should I have a stogie
in my mouth or...
Jaded Nova.
[pops]
Yeah.
I think I've really
narrowed it down.
I've got Kevin to help me
figure out exactly
what color direction
I'm going.
We'll check these out,
kind of go back and forth,
and see which one
is gonna work
the best for the car.
All right, thanks Brandon.
Hey, Kev.
-[Kevin] What's up, buddy?
-Just the guy I wanna see, so.
Eric's Nova.
I'm going away from the blue.
The no-sale blue?
The over-sold blue,
that's what I call it.
-[Kevin] You, you really
have too-
-You buying what I'm selling?
-[Kevin] You, you really
have too-
-You buying what I'm selling?
Yeah, you really
have to commit.
I was really wondering what,
how, blues just aren't you.
Normally.
I like blue, actually,
you know why I'm surprised?
I'm actually attracted
to more and more blue
but didn't realize it
because I really
like red more.
But I do like blue.
You know I like all colors,
it doesn't matter.
[Kevin] I feel like you
picked it when you were sad.
I wanted to,
I might of had the blues.
You're absolutely right.
This is gonna be
really important
for us to develop the color
and just look at it
on spray-out cards
so we can make quick changes
and come up with
the perfect shade.
This is not clear-coated yet,
but this is one of the colors.
This is not clear-coated yet,
but this is one of the colors.
-Now, at first it's--
-Wow.
-It's, it's a--
-That's a lot to take in.
A stretch, but look.
This is the interior color
I'm really sold on.
-Okay.
-I really wanna do
this cider color, okay?
This'll be the dash paint,
perfect match to the leather.
This is a medium color
of the same kind of a thing.
It's like a jade, okay?
And this is,
I got a little darker color,
don't pay
any attention to that,
I'm thinking about,
like, wheel contrast
or something like that.
So, Dave's kinda got me here
getting my feedback,
which is weird,
but [groans] he's putting me
under a lot of pressure here.
but [groans] he's putting me
under a lot of pressure here.
What does it flop too?
It flops back
and forth to grays,
to greens, to, like, a, uh,
like, an ocean blue
kind of a color.
Okay, okay.
So, it's kinda
all over the place.
This is the same color
with 30 percent black in it,
which just really darkened it.
It brought a lot
more green out,
I'm not 100 percent sure,
it's cool,
but I don't wanna make it look
like a green charcoal gray.
I'm trying to learn
from my mistakes in the past
because a lot of times,
I'm like, yeah,
whatever, this sucks,
-and then when you put it
altogether, it's amazing.
-Yeah, well, that's--
-and then when you put it
altogether, it's amazing.
-Yeah, well, that's--
-So, I'm trying to be careful.
-Okay.
Hey, you know what?
If he takes my feedback
and makes the wrong decision,
it's still his fault.
So, you're thinking
engine or wheels?
[Dave] Engine in
a matte finish, maybe
the matte finish, same--
-[Kevin] For the wheels?
-Maybe a little darker,
for the wheels, yup.
-Uh, same as the engine,
I'll have all of it the same.
-K.
-Exterior color, so--
-[Kevin] Yeah.
[Dave] Very small
amount of this color.
This'll be the main color
and this is the inside.
And there's the leather.
This is a lot
of pressure on me.
It's bold.
This'll be the main color
and this is the inside.
And there's the leather.
This is a lot
of pressure on me.
So, Dave's kinda got me here,
kinda getting my feedback,
which is weird,
but [groans] he's putting me
under a lot of pressure here.
So, let's go look
at this stuff outside.
Uh, well, guess what,
the sun's not out today,
so let me get a sun g*n.
That's even better,
you know what?
See that's...
-[Kevin] See this has a lot
of, like, white pearl in it.
-[Dave]...It doesn't suck.
[Kevin] Is that what
I'm seeing?
Yeah, but see the,
the flop on this,
see how it goes
to the blue side on this?
see how it goes
to the blue side on this?
-[Kevin] Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
-[Dave] And then you get
the gold at the high center
and then it goes real dark--
-[Kevin] On the low...
-[Dave] At the bottom,
mmm-hmm.
[Kevin] Yeah,
this is a really pretty color.
And I think with
this real warm cider color,
-I just, I'm really...
-It's still a lot to,
I'm just gonna let you know.
I know, I know,
I know, I know, but---
And I'm trying to hold back.
I definitely have fallen
in love with this combination.
I'm trying to do something
that's different,
-that we haven't done.
-And out of the box,
one hundred percent.
It was always gonna be blue.
It's very bold.
But he was also open to ideas
and that's usually
when somebody says,
"I like blue,
but I'm open to ideas..."
"I like blue,
but I'm open to ideas..."
Uh, I think this
is something unique,
I think it'll be cool.
I don't think there's another
car out there that's
being built in that style,
with that color combination
that'll, this will definitely
stand out.
I like it.
I'm confident in the color
that we've picked, but...
[sighs] You almost never know
till you lay it out.
I usually eat crow
at the end of these things.
And that's why
I was really hoping
you'd really, you know,
go off on how much
you don't like it.
So that when it's done,
you can go, "See, I..."
[mumbles] "You know what?
You're right."
'Cause I like it
when you say I'm right.
The interior and exterior
is gonna look
beautiful together.
No more wasting time,
we're out to the paint booth.
[Kevin] So, the challenges
in painting a unibody car
is the frame does not detach,
so the engine bay
gets to be very tricky.
You have frame,
you have inner, inner panels,
you have a lot
of things going on.
Normally, you can paint
the frames separate
Normally, you can paint
the frames separate
and paint the bottom
of the car separate
and then paint
the top of the car.
With a unibody car like this,
you kinda have to
paint it all at once.
So, it gets very tricky
with clear coats
and base coats
and things like that
to get everything to lay
as smooth as you possibly can.
And with the chassis
welded to the body,
there's a lot of tight edges
that have to be
body worked to perfection.
You normally don't have this
when you can pull the chassis
apart from the body.
One of the most overlooked
steps in our process
is the cut and polish.
We cut and polish
every paint job
that comes out of here
and it makes the cars
what they are.
Our assembly team is unique.
It's a good mix between
old school hot rodders
and new techniques.
Priority number one is to get
the suspension installed
and this rear end
can be a little tricky.
So, dropping the body down
on this rear end
normally isn't tricky,
but these wheels are huge
and things are very
tight on this car.
but these wheels are huge
and things are very
tight on this car.
[Tim] Kenny.
-Can you wash this tire?
-[Kenny] Yup.
[Tim] And then Roy's
gonna be down.
Now, we're gonna have to put
these uppers like this.
[Tim] Yup. All right, Roy,
don't die.
I'll try.
-Okay, coming down.
-[Roy] Yeah.
[Roy] The world is rising.
[Tim] Watch those rear shocks.
[Tim] You see 'em, Kenny?
[Kenny] Okay, we're gonna need
to go towards you, Timmy.
[Kenny] Okay, we're gonna need
to go towards you, Timmy.
We're about
three inches away here.
And that'll do, that'll do.
[Tim] Hang on.
Something's binding here.
[Kenny] K, we're gonna need
to go towards you, Timmy.
We're about three inches
away here.
And, that'll do, that'll do.
Hang on.
Something's binding here.
One of the most crucial parts
of setting this chassis up
is getting that rear end
perfectly centered
in the body.
This'll ensure that the wheels
don't rub to the outside
or the inside.
We, what we're
gonna have to do,
we're gonna have to
set the uppers,
get 'em pinned,
and then we're gonna
have to raise the lift
and then we're gonna
have to raise the lift
to get the four bars
into the socket there.
Come ahead.
Tim... Here we go, here we go.
Okay, Kenny, hold, hold it.
Tim, just hold your side.
[Kevin] When the body
comes down on this rear end,
it's gotta be
perfectly aligned.
There's not a lot of room
for error on this one.
[Tim] Okay, you ready?
Well, as I'll ever be.
-[Tim] K.
-Well, when you come down,
it should go back.
-[Tim] Yup, are you ready?
-Yeah.
A little bit.
A little bit.
That'll do, right there.
-[Tim] That'll do?
-Yeah.
[Kenny] Yeah, we're gonna
have to, like,
roll the rear end, like that.
[Roy] It'll work.
Just get the little bind
off of it.
Now we can, there we go.
That's the magic.
It's a lot less difficult
than I thought it would be.
I don't think I've ever said
that the rear end
would ever be easier
than we thought,
but needless to say,
it's in centered
and it's perfect.
but needless to say,
it's in centered
and it's perfect.
I'm so pumped to see
the motor go in this thing.
I am so stoked about having
this engine in this car.
It's gonna look marvelous.
But I'll tell you what,
before we all get too excited,
it's time to actually
get it in there
and see if it'll work.
Yeah, it's gonna be badass.
[singing in excitement]
-You loving it?
-Ain't loving it [bleep].
-You loving it?
-Ain't loving it [bleep].
I know, but it's
a sweet boat engine.
It's LS7 with dual cams, dude.
[Roy] I know, but...
I miss the old days,
when... [mumbles]
Oh, uh.
A little too modern for me.
[Tim] Oh, you'll be
all right, Roy.
Modern or not,
there's only one way
for this engine to go in,
the right way.
Well, kick 'em out the way.
-[Roy] Low, lower it a little
-Yup, yup.
-[Roy] Low, lower it a little
-Yup, yup.
Jeremy?
-I'll just get--
-Stop moving, Tim.
[Roy] We don't have
a lot of room.
You're an inch and a half
away from the fire wall.
We gotta take our time
and get it in there
so we don't scratch
anything up.
[Tim] Kenny.
-[Kenny] Keep going?
-Yup.
See the hole
I cut right there?
Yup.
Now...
Why don't you just start
heading down a little bit.
Just a little bit,
I stress to you.
[Tim] Roy, don't stress.
I'm always stressed.
[Kenny] How are we
on the fire wall?
[Tim] You're, uh, touching
the firewall with something.
[Roy] Okay, lose some
height here.
[Kenny] K, if it goes down
will it get me
in trouble here?
[Tim] I don't know,
I can't see it
I can just hear it.
[Roy] Kenny, how are you
looking over there?
You gotta get some
height out of it, Kenny.
[Tim] Keep going.
Yeah, driver's side's on.
[Roy] Okay, pin it,
pin it then.
-I can't let that part down.
-[Kenny] Well, it it's gonna
come down, it's, it's just...
Mine's on too, I mean.
Does your side take a bolt?
-[Tim mumbles]
It's getting there.
-[Kenny] No, down.
[Roy] No, I need, I need
a couple inches down.
[Tim] A little more.
Right about there.
Yup, looks good
on the driver's side.
[Roy] Give me
a bolt too, Kenny.
This is like modern
big-block, dude.
[Kenny] Lift up
on the valve cover.
[Tim] All right, which way
do you need me to wiggle?
[Tim] All right, which way
do you need me to wiggle?
[Kenny grunts]
[Roy] Can you push
towards me a little, Tim?
Look at that,
we got a motor in.
-[Tim] Good job, Ken.
-If he won't
high five you, I will.
-Ah, no, right here,
right here.
-Too late.
-All right.
-[laughs]
[Tim] Look at that,
that thing looks good.
I just wanna hear it run.
I just wanna hear it run.
[Roy] Well, we're taking it
to lunch tomorrow.
Yeah, before anybody
goes to lunch,
uh, we got a Nova to assemble,
hello...
[Tim] Throwing in
some dynamats,
some sound deadening stuff
on the floor.
Try to keep a lot
of the vibration and sound
out of this thing.
[Dave] The dynamat
is definitely essential
in this build.
these Borla mufflers
is gonna sounds gnarly.
Wiring all that
is super essential,
Wiring all that
is super essential,
but I love when
the big pieces go on.
We're having to do
a couple of things
after the fact,
but we'll get it,
we always do.
Get in over there, look,
they're doing work over there.
Kenny, get another grab on it.
[Kenny] I got it.
Gotta [bleep] amp it up,
so it won't [bleep] in there.
We're gonna be doing
some fixes probably,
just looking at it.
This whole [bleep]
situation needs to go.
Oh, right there.
[Kevin] Who's to say that even
lines up there anymore?
Why is this fender
not in its right spot?
Why is this fender
not in its right spot?
Everybody at home knows
how grumpy some people
can get when they don't
have lunch.
[Kevin] What the [bleep]
was that?
We're tearing the [bleep] up
out of this fender.
Obviously, if there's
a problem up in the front,
let's take care of it now.
But it looks like that
isn't sitting in that bolt.
-[Kevin] Just keep
an eye on it.
-[Kenny] Yeah.
-[Kevin] You good?
-[Roy] Yeah.
[Kevin] Let's just knock that
right there.
[Roy] All right.
Okay...
Put away and wipe it.
Hell to the yeah.
Hell to the yeah.
Hell to the yeah, bro.
Another bitchin'
fender install.
Bitchin'!
I did say we would
figure it out,
but it's carne asadas taco
time again.
[Dave] Now that the engine
and transmission has been
installed in the car,
now it's time to get a fire.
[engine sputters]
[engine sputters]
[engine sputters]
[engine sputters]
Well, this doesn't sound good.
[Tim] It's not hitting
somewhere,
it's not arcing there.
[grunts]
[engine sputters]
[engine sputters]
The guy's got the car
assembled in record time,
but starting it?
Well, that, we're not setting
any records here, no.
No, no records at all.
There's no signal
going to the starter,
so we have to figure out
what the issue is.
[Kenny] Aw, [bleep].
The system designed for,
like, a push button.
So, what we're doing is
putting to a key,
So, what we're doing is
putting to a key,
so we kinda gotta trick it
to think that it's still
a push button through a key.
It shouldn't be
that complicated, but...
It's a little bit more
complicated than we thought.
So, this is probably
a computer problem.
It's probably
one wire out of place
or not making a good contact,
we're gonna have to
get to the bottom of this.
[Kenny] Okay, there we go.
The four, that wasn't working.
[engine revs]
Well, we got it started.
We don't have any signals
up to our, uh,
to our throttle.
-Well, okay, so it runs...
-[mumbles] Just open it out
or something?
...but it doesn't run.
[Kenny] Yes.
It runs... To be continued.
Dun dun dun!
-Okay, well, um...
-[Kenny] It's gonna run,
run fast.
Let me know when
you get it running.
This is the first
of these motors
that we've ever installed,
so we're figuring it out.
When I pull up
the gages and all that,
I don't have oil pressure
I don't have oil pressure
and oil pressure shares
the same signals
and everything with throttle
right here.
You'll see different censors
and everything,
their commands,
only thing I don't show is
oil pressure.
If it doesn't see
oil pressure,
it's not gonna
give you throttle.
[Kevin] The mercury computer
wants a direct line
from the computer
to the battery
we had it run through
a junction block,
it didn't like that,
so we ran a new line.
And that one goes
into the clutch switch,
so it's that middle connecter
in the ECU.
Let's do that again.
[engine sputters]
[engine runs smoothly]
Right, let's go golfing.
[Tim] I k*lled it.
Now that everything
under the hood is looking good
and sounding awesome,
it's time for some stitches.
Okay, our plan with this car
is we're gonna get
everything built
before we start
wrapping anything,
that way there
we do not nick any leather.
First we gotta start
with this headline
and we gotta get it all
foamed up, sanded out.
Then we're gonna
work our way down.
I went in there
and just sanded
the whole head liner,
all the metals,
so we got a good contact.
We're using
a very thick padding.
Not only is it
going to fill the void,
it's gonna make for
a very good sound deadener.
The key to this is,
is not letting
these layers fail.
The key to this is,
is not letting
these layers fail.
Every layer's
gotta be on the money.
If we get a bubble,
or somewhere
that doesn't get glued,
that's where
a headliner will fail.
We'll slam one layer of, uh,
quarter-inch on this thing
and start sanding.
Start making a mess
in here for Kevin.
Okay, wow.
Hey, Justin.
-What's going on?
-[Dave] Not much,
how's it going?
[Justin] Good, man.
We got the hard part done.
Got the one piece ready,
we're definitely gonna
have a sail panel.
Got the one piece ready,
we're definitely gonna
have a sail panel.
-It's across there, but--
-[Dave] I'm fine with that.
-This is such
a big headliner, that--
-It is.
-It's fine.
-[Justin] I wanna build
everything
for this vehicle before
any leather goes
in this vehicle.
Yeah, I think
that's a good idea.
-[Justin] Just so we're not
scuffing anything.
-Yeah.
-I don't wanna
backtrack on this one.
-[Dave] No, no, no.
Factory A-pillar covers
or you're just gonna
foam these?
No, because of the way
this was all set up,
these are metal
and they're hard to find.
-Okay.
-We're gonna go in and
cut this back right here,
-recess it in
as much as possible--
-And have it
-come back to
where it meets up.
-So it's super tight.
Totally makes sense.
Totally makes sense.
-Door mechanism's right,
right in the right place.
-Yeah.
[Dave] I can probably
and then just have it to where
we can, uh,
put the chrome onto it.
Do we wanna recess that in
to where we just drop
that piece of metal in?
[Dave] We could.
-Um.
-And then you've had
that chrome roof rail
that we've made.
-It trims out nice
right to this line.
-Perfect, okay.
[Justin] Our console's
very low profile,
pretty basic.
We only need to go up above
probably this set nut
right here
on this shifter, huh?
Just dive it into
the main hump right there
not all the way
under the dash.
not all the way
under the dash.
The steering wheel
is sitting there on the shelf.
It is done.
-This one's here.
-Let's look at it,
if it's here.
[Dave] Yeah,
it's pretty cool, actually.
We're gonna wrap all of this,
all of it.
[Justin] And this is
just gonna be a metal--
[Dave] This
is the darker color,
this is the lighter color.
All the way around
and then we'll just
put a piece of aluminum
-that's chromed in here
as a dart, and that's it.
-Yeah.
-[Dave] Isn't that rad?
-[Justin] Yeah, it is,
it's way nice.
-Okay, cool.
-It's pretty awesome, so...
All right, I don't,
I don't have
any other questions, so...
Cool. Well, if you do just,
you know where to find me.
[Justin] All righty.
[Dave] I'll be in Hawaii.
-Perfect, yeah.
-[Dave laughs]
-Perfect, yeah.
-[Dave laughs]
All right, buddy.
[Justin] What we're gonna do,
we're gonna go off the design
that Dave has drawn up
and we're gonna take
this console and we're gonna
use this durafoam,
it's called signboard foam,
and we're gonna get us
a nice shape with that.
You're probably
higher than I want it to be,
but that's okay.
I want it straight across,
like the picture shows.
I want it straight across,
like the picture shows.
-[Tazz] Yeah.
-[Justin] Like
the drawing, so...
This is a two-piece console.
What it's gonna have
is, like, a big lid
that sits on top of it.
It actually looks very long,
but when it's in the car
it's very proportioned.
To make this back seat
look proportioned,
there's gonna be absolutely
no foam on these mini-tubs,
this is gonna be minimal.
[Tazz] Well then how far
back is this going?
It's gonna be hard to say,
I'd rather see this on here
than add onto the back.
But right there probably
where it's at is probably
where it's gonna be,
Tazz, honestly.
So, I think we do need
to get Dave
So, I think we do need
to get Dave
sitting in this to make sure.
I think he's
about Eric's height.
Justin, what's going on?
-We got this center console--
-[Dave] Oh, nice.
-Just, just sitting in here.
-Okay.
-Sitting a little tall--
-[Dave] Mmm-hmm.
[Justin] For what
the rendering is.
But I want you
to sit in it, make sure
the seat location's good
and how you're feel is
on that armrest going down
probably an inch.
That actually
feels really good.
Now that Dave's
been in the car,
everything fits just fine,
but now we got
a big problem in the back.
And we still got
a whole backseat
to build from scratch.
We got some good cheating
to do on this backseat.
We got some good cheating
to do on this backseat.
There is absolutely
no proportion to this seat,
it's just not gonna work.
So, if we go off of where
you're sitting right now,
-[Dave] Mmm-hmm.
-K.
We cheat this, even to here,
I don't ever really think
that he's gonna have
anybody in the back seat.
Well, I've heard him
say something about grandkids,
but they can rent an Astro van
or a minivan or something.
A rear seat delete's
the way to go to make
this look proportioned.
Well, and I think it'll look
a lot more sporty, too.
[Justin] Absolutely.
[Justin] Absolutely.
[Dave] I'm gonna call him
and I'm just gonna tell him,
"Hey, the more we look at it,
the more it kinda seems
useless to put a backseat
in the car,
it's just so small."
Is he gonna, probably
show this a time or two?
Oh, yeah, oh, no,
it'll get shown.
-It'll look better, anyways.
-[Dave] Yeah.
Cool, right on.
I think I'm gonna have to
call Eric about
the backseat situation
and hopefully he doesn't
screen my phone call.
Eric, what are you doing?
[Eric] Hey, Dave, how are you?
I'm great, man.
Yeah, so, the Kindig crew's
basically pretty much
wrapped up with the car.
It's Justin's, uh, crew
that's, uh, in the car now--
It's Justin's, uh, crew
that's, uh, in the car now--
-[Eric] Right.
-And we're completely
out of their way
and I hate the bearer
of bad news,
but to be honest with you,
this back seat
would be so small,
I don't think
you could even put
a small child's seat in it.
[Eric] Yeah, um, uh, uh...
I hate the bearer of bad news,
but to be honest with you,
this back seat
would be so small,
I don't think
you could even put
a small child's seat in it.
[Eric] Yeah, um, uh...
[Dave] One of the things
that seems to need some change
from the design,
is the fact that there's
no room for a back seat, man.
There's just no room.
[Eric] What
is your suggestion?
Uh, no back seat,
we'll just do a nice,
uh, filler panel,
make it nice and open
to where you can put
stuff back behind the seats,
-uh--
-[Eric] Okay.
Center console will
go back to a waterfall.
[Eric] Yes, yes, yeah, no,
that's, that's,
that sounds great.
[Eric] Yes, yes, yeah, no,
that's, that's,
that sounds great.
-[Dave] Okay.
-[Eric] That sounds great.
Yeah, no, that's,
I appreciate you,
you letting me know
about that.
Just putting a back seat
in here because
of the tubs and stuff,
I think it's kind of
a pointless...
-[Eric] Yeah, yeah,
yeah, yeah, okay.
-...journey, so.
For once, everybody agrees
with me, the backseat is done.
Sounds groovy, buddy,
thanks you, give my love and--
-[Eric] Thanks, Dave.
-Uh, we'll talk to you
again soon.
-[Eric] All right,
buddy, bye-bye.
-All right, see ya.
[Dave] This Nova's
come a long way
since we first got it.
Hell to the yeah, bro.
[Dave] It's wired,
it's fired...
[engine revs]
[Dave] Now it's time
to put the icing on the cake.
So you both on one side.
That's the front.
That's the front?
-Yes.
-[Tazz] Yeah.
So, one of the trickiest parts
about installing
this headliner is
is you're gonna need
a lot of hands
in all four corners
and we cannot stick it
unless it's with the steam,
so there's
no making a mistake.
Don't let it touch,
don't pinch it like that,
Tazz.
Don't let it touch,
don't pinch it like that,
Tazz.
K, which line, Tazz?
You have two of 'em here, bud.
[Tazz] Uh, it's the very
top one for the front.
-[Justin] Okay.
-[Tazz] The very top one.
[Justin] K, go this way.
Keep going, right there.
We're starting out
center here,
we're, I'm having
a little bit of difficulty
because it being
a little more humid
it's taking
a little longer to dry.
With the humidity,
this contact cement
just does not tack up.
I don't lay it in there right
the very first time,
it could stick and I can't
pull it back to fix it,
it could stick and I can't
pull it back to fix it,
so what you see
is what you get.
It's sticking pretty good,
but I can still
relieve it a little bit.
This is such a big headliner
that we had a hard time
getting a hide that didn't
have any flaws in it.
It's definitely harder
to install this headliner
with the glass in it,
because we only got one place
we can go through to hold it,
where if the glass
was out of it, we could
go around the pillars.
Go out there and pull
that corner, K. I got this.
Don't push that up,
I will burn you at this,
I promise you.
Don't push that up,
I will burn you at this,
I promise you.
Perfect, tight.
We wanna get everybody
in each corner
to pull a little tension
so I'm not fighting
when I'm steaming it
into place.
Reason I want 'em to just
hold it nice and tight,
'cause I can, I'll be able
to push this out
like I'm doing,
but I didn't want it
to touch the edge
because I was a little bit
worried that if it's still
sticky and hits that edge,
that it's gonna stick
to that edge,
then I go to pull it down,
and that's gonna actually,
that edge would have
ended up in the curve,
and that's gonna actually,
that edge would have
ended up in the curve,
so you'd see a bunch
of modeling, like extra glue,
so I didn't want that.
But they're doing a good job
over there, so we're gonna
let there and keep doing it.
We've missed
all the flaws so far, yes.
We're good,
coming out pretty nice.
The trickiest part
was we only had two hides
to work with out of eight,
that didn't have
a big flaw in the middle.
-K, Tazz.
-[Tazz] Yeah.
It's gonna be your turn.
So, now that I got this
steamed in,
So, now that I got this
steamed in,
it's getting
really hot in here.
I'm gonna pass this on
to Tazz to finish up.
-[Tazz] Okay.
-[Justin] I want you
to go over this whole
-headliner, K?
-All right.
This hose gets really hot.
[Justin] So, now headliner's
all finished up.
We still gotta put
the sail panels in,
we gotta do the package tray,
we gotta dial in
these door panels,
and do the seats and carpet.
we gotta dial in
these door panels,
and do the seats and carpet.
We still got a lot of work
ahead of us.
I'm doing these one at a time,
putting them back on,
going from there.
Wanted to make sure
I can move it around
and finesse it a little bit,
but other than that
just gotta make sure that it
all lays in here really nice.
but other than that
just gotta make sure that it
all lays in here really nice.
[Dave] This Nova's
come a long way
since we first got it.
It's shiny, it's put together.
And then we got a big piece
running across where
we did the rear seat delete.
That's pretty tricky
because that's a big piece
and the way it goes in,
it kinda has to go in
and then where they meet up's
gonna be on a 45, so...
and then where they meet up's
gonna be on a 45, so...
[Tazz] Yeah,
everything looks good.
[Justin] This interior,
we're making really
good progress on it,
and I really think
this one's gonna
turn out really nice.
and I really think
this one's gonna
turn out really nice.
[Dave] Today, we're in
one of my very favorite
places to be in,
that's the Utah Olympic Park.
There's a sweet jump, okay,
I'm not gonna make
Eric go over the jump,
but we're gonna give
Eric's Nova back to him,
right here, right now.
I am super excited
to see the car,
to see what we've
accomplished together.
I'm just jazzed
to be here today.
[Dave] To create something
that just didn't exist before
and to have the opportunity
to do some really cool stuff,
and to have the opportunity
to do some really cool stuff,
everybody's had a big smile
to see what you would
think of this car,
so without any further ado,
I'm ready to show you
your Nova.
-Let's do it, brother.
-All right, man.
All right, man.
Holy sh--
There's my car.
It's my car.
That is crazy.
Dave, this is epic.
Dave, this is epic.
My crew really went
to the mill on this thing,
[Eric] I agree, absolutely,
and that color,
that color pops.
The metallics, the pearls,
the color, the contrast,
absolutely perfect.
-[Dave] It's the pearl dance,
what we call it.
-[Eric] Yeah.
-You're gonna be doing this--
-Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
-To see the different colors.
-Yeah, yeah
It's really quite fun
to look at these cars.
This jaded color looks
marvelous on that body style,
it flops all over the place
on the high peaks
of the fenders,
the rear quarter panels,
and of course across the roof.
[Eric] Absolutely gorgeous
-and the contrast
to the wheels,
-[Dave] Uh-huh.
-and the contrast
to the wheels,
-[Dave] Uh-huh.
Oh, man.
[laughing] Yeah, those tires,
way bigger than I anticipated.
You know, the stance
on the car blows my mind.
I've never seen,
in my muscle car era,
-Mmm-hmm.
-Of my life, a better stance
than what you've
accomplished here.
In my humble opinion,
this is the best stance
I've ever seen.
Well...
Congratulations.
Congratulations.
First time, that I'm aware of,
we have successfully
accomplished the world's first
hardtop third generation Nova.
[Dave] I think you're right,
I haven't seen one.
-[Eric] Thanks, brother.
-[Dave] You're welcome.
-[Eric] That's awesome.
-[Dave] That's our job,
-creating stuff
that didn't exist.
-Exactly.
That front valance,
the trim on the bumper,
I mean, absolutely perfect.
-I don't think you get
a whole lot better than this.
-No.
-I don't think you get
a whole lot better than this.
-No.
My take away
of the front of the car,
all the way around the car,
it's clearly
a gentleman's hot rod.
This actually is Kevin's
favorite part of the car.
[Eric] Oh!
-[Dave] What you're looking at
here is a Mercury Racing SB4--
-[Eric] Wow.
[Dave] This is a four cam,
twin throttle body, 427.
It is a 700 horsepower plus.
It'll rev over 8,000 RPM
and it just is gnarly.
It'll rev over 8,000 RPM
and it just is gnarly.
[Eric] I've never
seen anything like it ever.
-[Dave laughs]
-[Eric] Ever.
It is literally
the jewelry box,
the jewelry box.
I just might drive this car
with the hood up.
-No, let's not do that.
-No, maybe not.
-Really, yeah.
-There's safety issues, yeah.
They've taken it
to another level.
To see the car finished today
has been a dream of mine
for a long time.
[clears throat] But, uh...
I'm not sure if you know this
or not, but, um...
I'm not sure if you know this
or not, but, um...
...Ironically, today's my, uh,
brother's birthday.
It's very moving, very moving.
Still paying tribute
to my brother
and I know, uh, my brother's
looking at us now,
looking at the car now,
giving his two thumbs up.
I know John...
is, uh, proud
of what we built.
John owned three Novas,
I bought his first one.
He mentored me, I learned
the basics from my brother
He mentored me, I learned
the basics from my brother
and this is a tribute,
this is a tribute
to Johnny and Eric,
our relationship.
I consider still today
my brother's with me.
So, every time I see my Nova,
I know that it's
Johnny's and I, our Nova.
Gives you goosebumps,
doesn't it?
-Yes.
-You ain't got goosebumps yet,
Son, get in that car.
Holy smokes.
Wow.
Oh, this
is absolutely gorgeous.
Oh, this
is absolutely gorgeous.
Smooth, clean.
The attention to detail
that the team
at JS Custom Interiors did
was second to none.
Love the color contrast.
Love the design work.
Love the chrome accents.
You think John would
have been proud?
Oh, Johnny would have
one saying, yes.
He'd say, "Oh, yeah."
"Oh, yeah."
That's all he would say,
he'd go, "Oh, yeah."
He would be
giving me his smile,
his acknowledgment
that he is very happy.
his acknowledgment
that he is very happy.
[engine revs]
-Think I can talk Johnny out
of getting in the back?
-Yeah.
-Getting outta the back seat.
-Get in here,
-let's go for a burn.
-We'll go for a ride.
And you know one of
my favorite parts of this car
is the hardtop.
[Eric] Hell yeah.
-Oh, yeah.
-Oh, baby.
I love this sound.
It's so refreshing actually
to be in this car and not be
looking at a pillar.
It's so refreshing actually
to be in this car and not be
looking at a pillar.
-[Eric] Yes.
-[Dave] Or a vent glass.
[Eric] I've never
driven a car like that,
a clearly muscle car,
until today.
I can honestly say
I have the muscle car
for third gen Nova.
[Dave] It's nice and tight
in the corners.
It does, this feels
so comfortable.
[Dave] I love how the car
doesn't feel like
a stock Nova.
[Eric] Yes.
That car handle is on rails,
it was made to be the best.
Oh, this motor's perfect.
Everyone's gonna know
that I'm coming.
It handles beautifully,
the alignment was great.
I can hardly wait to have
the world see it.
This is all and more
than I ever thought
it would be.
My expectations were
blown out of the water.
I am so happy,
this is the best day
of my life.
-Dude, you k*lled it, man.
-[Dave laughs]
Oh, yeah, it's bitchin'.
[Eric] Oh, yeah.
