Dave: coming up...
I don't even want to get
close to this thing.
...the shop is challenged
With one of its most
daring builds to date,
In the form of a rare
You have a lot
to work with.
That's the understatement
of the century.
I think I could put
three hot rods
Inside of this hot rod.
No idea is too crazy
on this project...
With the v12
it's going to have,
It's going to need
some meat on the back.
We may or may not have broke
the most important piece.
...as long as we can make
the boss happy.
Oh, we'll lay it down
out there, sure.
Come on in
there with it.
All signs point to this
being one bitchin' ride.
Don't let nick touch anymore
things on that car, please.
[ Suspenseful music plays ]
[ drill whirring ]
Building custom cars
isn't easy...
...it's bitchin'.
My name is dave kindig.
I'm a self-taught custom-car
designer and builder.
My hand-drawn concepts
are driven to design and build
The baddest cars on pavement.
This is gorgeous!
I've assembled a team
Of master craftsmen
-whew!
Who turn metal dreams
into hot-rod reality.
Ohh!
Guys, I love it!
There are a lot of great
machines out on the road...
Kevin: dude, we're
on the sidewalk!
...but only a select few
are bitchin' rides.

Kevin: so I know before I showed
you guys my new office.
But I didn't even tell you
the best part!
With my new office
comes a new sheriff
And a new way of doing business.
There's a lot of rules, and in
fact, there's going to be more,
But we wrote them
right here on the window.
This says, "no skipping
gangster a*s songs!"
That means really good songs.
No skipping those ever.
"Don't ever turn down for what."
What?
"No sick people
in this office, ever."
And then, rule number four,
"no [bleep] attitudes."
So if you come up here
with a [bleep] attitude,
I'm going to blast you.
This is what I take care
of [bleep] attitudes with,
I blast them with this g*n.
Just like this.
Just don't have a [bleep]
attitude here.
In fact, if you break
any of my new rules,
I'll just straight up sh**t you.
Yes, dave.
So I asked dave
to come into my office.
Technically I don't manage dave,
But I feel everyone could use
a little motivation.
He comes up here
and tells us things
That we don't want to hear
all the time.
That's true, right?
That is very true.
It's his company, but we might
not like it at the moment.
So kevin just called me up
to his office.
I think something's up,
and I don't like surprises.
Is that dave?
¶¶
[ Laughs ]
Stop it!
I'm not coming over there.
Why?
Because you've got a g*n
in your hand.
Because I don't really like
what you have to say.
Ow!
[ Laughs ]
Hey, I need your g*n!
Yeah, hurry it up!
You can have the spare.
I'm taking a lot of heat
over here.
What do you mean?
Why are you giving him g*ns?
He's got the one sh**ter.
Whoa!
Dave: oh!
This sucks.
There's one...
Oh, right in the kisser.
Oh!
Ouch!
[ Laughs ]
Screw you guys.
Ah!
[ Laughter ]
[Bleep]
You rapid-fire
sons of [bleep].
Hey, don't come back
until you bring treats!
Oh, I'll be back.
But before my revenge
takes place,
We have a really cool project
showing up today.
This is something
I've never worked on,
And I'm extremely excited
to see what we can do with it.
Holy smokes, look at
the size of that thing!
Wow!
My name's tad leach.
I'm from coeur d'alene, idaho,
and I brought down
A '58 lincoln
continental mark iii.
It doesn't get a license plate,
it gets an address?
And a zip code!
And a zip code.
Holy... I wasn't even sure
if you were going to make it
In that 14-foot wide door.
You have a lot to work with,
a lot to work with.
That's the understatement
of the century.
I think I could put three hot
rods inside of this hot rod.
Wow!
Look at how cool this is.
I think that's everybody's
reaction because I don't know
If they made them
any longer than that.
It is a monster of a car.
Well, this is
kind of a unique --
I mean, I haven't
seen too many
'58 Continental mark
iiis around,
And I would probably
guess you haven't either.
I haven't either.
Dave: as a car designer,
this continental
Is going to be perfect for us.
It's something that
we haven't done before,
And I always like
to get off the beaten path.
This is one large path.
The reveals on the side...
Wow!
Look at how cool that is.
It's got some marvelous
sculpting.
I mean, this is a '50s car.
It truly is.
I want you to keep that
classic '50s styling...
Okay.
...but all of those neat,
new things.
I wanted to do something
that started
With a pretty unique car,
And then take that uniqueness
And add to it to come up
with something
That just is
a totally different car
Than what you're going to see,
Really anywhere, on a circuit
or at car shows.
Dave: well, let me look
under the hood here
And see what we've
got to work with.
I may be old, but my hormones
are still teenage,
So you know, got have a lot
of power in there to...
Looks like this engine
compartment,
You could have
a field day,
And I know you always
refer to the jewelry box,
And you do...
Your engine compartments
are second to none,
And so i...
Well, thank you.
Man, I want you to put
those creative juices to work
And just something that,
when that thing goes up,
You hear the "oohs"
and the "aahs."
Ryan falconer makes a custom,
all-aluminum v12.
If you put a smaller
motor in there,
I think it's going to get lost,
So I think that would
fit it perfectly,
And yeah, I like the idea
of a lot of power.
I am up for the challenge,
my friend.
This looks like it could
really be a fun, fun project.
The engine tad has in mind
is awesome!
It's a monster.
The back window is...
This is real glass, right?
That's real glass,
and it actually comes down.
It rolls down?
It rolls down,
So that's...
Wow!
...kind of a unique feature
to it, too, so.
You know, I love the styling of
the car, the original chrome,
All of the really cool
body lines on this thing,
But, yeah,
by improving, you know,
Driveability,
the power train,
The chassis stuff,
I mean,
We can really get creative
with something like this.
And the most important, it has
to set my wife back on her ears
Because she gave me
permission to do this,
So we're both
on the hook,
My friend, so.
All right.
I won't let you down, sir.
I know you won't.
My wife is endearingly
referred to as "the big boss."
That's why I'm holding
dave accountable.
She'd better like it
or we're both in trouble.
Well, I guess I better
get to the drawing board.
You better, and I'm
looking forward to it.
It's going to be awesome.
I'm going to --
Thank you for taking
the project on.
Hey, I'm going to give you
nothing but my best.
Wait until the guys
see this thing.
They're going to probably
quit on me, it's so big.
I'm like the kid with a new toy.
I am just thrilled
and excited so much,
I can't tell you.
¶¶
Dave: tad's 1958 continental.
This car is going to be
super over-the-top.
We're pulling both front
and rear bumpers in.
I got rid of the rear skirts.
I'm going to use a set
of front fender sections
To create a new wheel
well in the back.
It'll show off more of the wheel
And give it a little bit
more of that
Hot-rod-lincoln look
that we're after.
I've actually made a hood bulge
in the center of the hood
Because he'll have an acrylic
cover that goes over the top,
So with the hood down,
you'll still be able
To see the super chargers.
We're going to recreate a grille
that matches the front.
We're going to put
that on the rear,
And we're going to do
a full led panel,
A blue contrast
with beige interior.
And all of the cool little
tricks that we've done to it,
It's going to be very subtle,
But if you park a stock
one next to it,
You'll definitely see
what we've done to this car.
It's going to go down in history
as one of the kindig classics.
¶¶
Tommy: so this is the first day
we're on the '58 lincoln,
Tearing it down.
Not only is this lincoln huge,
but it has a ton of pieces.
It's almost as bad
as a cadillac.
We need to make sure
that we don't lose one part.
Everything needs to be bagged
and tagged perfectly.
¶¶
We're going to need to be
really careful
And label everything,
take a lot of pictures.
This car has thousands of parts,
And we want to keep them
all straight.
So this car's not
getting sand blasted.
It's getting acid dipped, which
will remove any type of paint,
Body filler, seam sealer,
anything other than the metal.
It's pretty good. It gives us
a cleaner car to start with,
And it doesn't take away
the thin metal
Where we have rust issues,
And it doesn't leave
a lot of sand behind.
Unfortunately for tear-down,
because it's getting stripped,
Everything has to come off.
Whoo-hoo-hoo!
Right now we've got...
Kind of started
At the back of the car,
working our way forward.
We're at the
convertible top now.
We don't do a ton
of convertibles,
And every one is so different.
Getting in there and finding
all the pins and bolts
And stuff that needs to
come out, that's the hard part.
So that's where we're at now,
trying to figure out
The last piece of the puzzle
and then lift this out.
Where we at? What's coming out?
This whole thing is coming out?
I believe we can knock
this slider down now,
And we should be able to
come up out of it,
Theoretically.
Okay.
This tear-down shouldn't be
too bad, but it is an old car,
A lot of rare parts on it,
So we got to be really careful.
If I miss, I'm sorry.
Ow!
Dude.
You got it?
It's going to release here
in just a second.
Has anybody else noticed the
hammer that lane is using here?
It looks more like a hazard
than a functioning tool.
I'm going to buy you a hammer.
When's your birthday?
In spite of lane's hammer,
The tear-down is going
just as expected.
But the top is by far the most
delicate piece of this car.
First side came out fine.
Now let's move on
to the other side.
You need a new hammer,
though.
Lane: my hammer?
Look at that thing.
¶¶
Oh!
Take that!
Dude, we may or may not have
broke the most important
Piece on this top in half.
Tommy: we need, like,
more people for the front.
Will you grab one more person
to grab that corner?
Yeah, absolutely.
I'm a little bit nervous to see
how bad the break is,
But we won't really know until
we get the whole convertible
Top off and upside down.
Well, let's get it flipped over.
Tweaks it more.
¶¶
And there's the piece.
-Damn.
-[Sarcastically] awesome!
-That's bad.
-Way bad.
¶¶
Tommy: and there's the piece.
-Damn.
-[Sarcastically] awesome!
-That's bad.
-Way bad.
So there's no way we're going
to be able to fix this part.
That's the main part.
One of the main parts,
anyway.
Yeah.
Definitely can't
work like that.
We're going to have to try
to find a replacement.
The problem is, who's going
to talk to kevin about this.
What's up, kevin?
What's up, dude,
How's it going?
We got some parts out.
Start at the back,
moving forward.
Okay.
It's going pretty good.
Okay.
Pretty good,
not great...
What's wrong?
...or perfect.
Tommy is acting super shady,
And he's not even a shady guy.
Something's up.
I've got a little bit
of rust back here.
That's fine.
That's just the surface.
Rust? We knew this car was
going to have some rust.
It's a convertible,
and it's 70 years old.
Spit it out, what's wrong?
Kind of broke
a convertible piece,
But some rust back here...
What's the --
what do you mean?
What broken
convertible piece?
What piece is busted,
a piece that we can buy?
A piece that we can fix?
I mean, it's going
to be hard to find,
But, you know,
it's not like this is a --
Oh...
So the guys just came to me
and said they broke
One of the pieces
to the convertible top.
I haven't done very much
research on this car yet.
I don't even know if those
parts are available.
We're going to need
these two pieces.
Did nick break it?
I'm not sure, dude.
Are you trying to
cover for him?
I don't know anything.
This isn't quite the start
to this project
That I was really looking for.
Well, it wasn't
broken before.
It might have had a fracture,
like a hairline,
Like a stress fracture.
It broke real damn easy,
Or I'm strong.
I don't know.
Before we freak out,
let's see what we can find.
I mean, I don't think
it's going to be
The most readily
available part to find,
But we should be
able to find one.
They made more than just one,
and they made more than two.
You know, tear-down definitely
takes a toll on all the parts.
Some of these cars are just
so old and so rare,
You just don't know
what's available for them.
Hopefully, after
a couple phone calls,
We'll be able to find this piece
And it won't set us
back too bad.
Just keep on -- just let
me know how much the new part is
And I'll work out a payment
plan with nick or whatever.
I'm just kidding.
Don't let nick touch anymore
things on that car, please.
I think that went over well.
Kevin, he's in a good mood
today, so good for all of us.
I don't think it's that
big of a deal.
It is kind of a rare part,
but we'll be able to find one.
So we're just going to move on
with the tear-down.
¶¶
Whole thing I'm thinking
right now is...
How much fun this will be
to get back in.
Dave:
so we're going to send this
lincoln out to get stripped,
But in the meantime,
an old friend
Just showed back up
at the shop.
Today we've got something
extremely unique
And something close
to my heart --
The 1969 mclaren mark v.
This car's been to be
kindig-it design before.
We did a few small touch-ups
on the exterior
And did a little bit
of paint on the interior.
Now it's back for justin to do
a little bit of work
In the upholstery shop --
new seats and a headliner.
Justin s.: Okay, so we've
got this '69 mclaren here.
Customer brought it in so
we can get custom seats
Built for it to fit him.
The customer is a real tall guy,
And these cars really
aren't made for tall people.
Hell, they're barely made
for short people.
It's tough to get in
this thing.
We'll get the customer
to sit in the car
To okay it or get somebody
close to his size and frame.
He's about 6-foot tall, so that
leaves me and you out of this.
Cody's been with us now,
probably, 4 months.
He's got, probably,
Pretty good kid, works hard.
So also, what's very important
with what we're doing here
Is not only are we building
the seat to fit him,
He wants a headrest
because you can see
How it really lays
back like this.
If we can get him up here,
it'll be ideal,
So he can see out
and he's not back here.
So...
All right.
So we're just doing the seats,
nothing else?
We're going to build a,
hopefully, a one-piece headliner
Out of light gauge steel.
Right.
We're going to make
it fit from here,
Fit this little bit
of contour
And come all the way
to the rearview mirror.
Okay.
We're probably going to do
This out of
an alcantara,
And then this is going
to be 100% leather.
The headliner on this car's
pretty small, but tricky,
And I'm going to let
cody tackle this project.
So let's get to it, and let me
know if you have any questions.
Right on.
¶¶
¶¶
¶¶
Cody: I've got it fitting
pretty good.
¶¶
Justin s.: Cody has been working
on the headliner.
I'm going to go check it out.
I like the fit on it, cody.
It looks really good
around the mirror
And across the back here.
Looks good.
I think he'll like it.
I like it.
With the headliner done,
next up is the seats.
With these seats,
with him being tall,
We pretty much put the guy
on the floorboards.
He's sitting on about 1 inch
of foam, and that's it.
This is pretty much how they
sit in the car, just like this,
And then we're going to have a
headrest that comes up and over.
With not having a lot
of space to work with,
We used the best foam possible
And as thin as possible
as we could.
So all we did with the inserts
on this seat is,
We just did a kind
of a sports-car look
With the double-pleated seams,
Just top stitch and kept them
three-quarters of an inch apart.
Get my wedding ring in there.
It makes my wife happy.
¶¶
Looks like they're going to
lay out pretty nice, actually.
They're going to fit
really nice.
¶¶
Everything is looking really,
really good on the bench.
I sure hope it fits in the car.
Okay, perfect.
So while I'm installing
the leather on the seats,
Cody's going to work
on the headrest.
Made it out of metal
and fiberglass,
So it'll be nice and sturdy.
Should mold to the seats
pretty well,
And then we'll get them wrapped.
Justin s.: Before we get
too far on the headrest,
We need to get
somebody in the car.
I don't know anybody
Unless you're including
somebody with a good hairdo.
That guy with this and this.
Hey, okay, so with you
being 6-foot-ish,
One, two,
depending on...
The hair gone.
Okay.
But with hair, yeah,
I'm about 6'1", 6'2"-ish.
Two?
Perfect.
Customer is about 6-foot.
Okay.
We've got to build
the headrest, now,
And the headrest
is oversized right now.
I just want to know...
Determine where we're going
to cut the top off.
Would you mind
getting in there?
We'll put the wheel on...
Sure.
This car is a little hard
for me to get into.
Not only is it tight, but also
it's full of fiberglass,
A little itchy
and quite uncomfortable.,
Well, it not my problem.
He's the one wearing
nice clothes to work.
Am I going to stick
to something?
Well, we'll see.
You know where to buy
my new shirt, right?
I'll buy you
a $15 shirt.
It's okay, dave.
This is an upholstery shop.
Just get in the car.
You might get dirty.
Holy [bleep].
It's really important to
get these headrests right,
So we need to get dave
sitting in the car.
Am I going to stick
to something?
Well, we'll see.
I don't have a problem
helping justin out.
It's just not easy for a guy
my size to fit in this car.
Holy [bleep].
Does this guy know
the dash is in the way?
The last time I sat in this car,
I don't believe that
the bottom of the dash
Had been modified
the way it is now.
My knees are actually hitting
the bottom of the dash.
It's kind of a sharp corner,
A little on
the uncomfortable side.
Yeah, it's in the way
of his legs, right?
Yeah, big time.
But realistically,
if you're out on the track,
You might not even notice it.
I sure like this car, though.
You're only sitting
on an inch and --
About an inch
and a quarter at your back.
Well, my hair's
a little bit in there,
But give or take an inch,
I think you'd be fine.
My eye level's right
in the middle of the roof.
I mean, as far as the seat goes,
it feels very comfortable.
Yeah, the car was a little
tight for me to fit in,
But once it was all done,
it was very comfortable.
You sit extremely low.
You know, all-in-all, I think
justin did a fantastic job.
If you were going to
have a headrest,
Where would your head
want to be at?
About right there?
Further forward.
Okay, code, so where dave's
sitting right now,
Even if he had
a helmet on --
He wouldn't.
He would never mess his hair up.
We're just going to come
almost straight up, right here,
And roll it
off this way.
I'm thinking we need to cut this
about right here,
And we're just going to come
straight up like this,
And almost -- if you're looking
at it from the side,
It's going to look
like a half a teardrop,
You know what I mean, if you
were to draw a teardrop out?
If it's going to make it
bulky and ugly,
Because I can see
where his head is --
Are you saying my head
is bulky and ugly?
No, not at all.
You don't have
a big head, dave.
Thanks.
I think all these boys
are jelly.
They don't have a 'do like this,
the chiseled features,
The sharpness to fit
into a car like this.
Sounds good.
Well, thanks, man.
Yep, you bet.
Guys, where you all going?
I need a hand
getting out of here.
I'm stuck!
Waiting for dave to get
in the car was really worth it
Because now we can move on
and get these headrests done.
¶¶
¶¶
¶¶
¶¶
Let's go set it
in the car, though.
We'll set it in place
and I'll go jump in and see
How it goes over
my shoulders, yeah.
I think I'll do the test
fit this time.
We don't got all day
to wait for dave,
And I'm far more agile
than him and much younger.
Oh, this is bull [bleep].
[ Both laugh ]
Oh.
Good thing I'm doing this
when I'm 42.
Okay, maybe I owe
dave an apology.
This thing is not
that easy to get into.
Okay, now I'm sitting
in the car,
Got the seatbelts
over my shoulders,
I see a problem.
I hate to say it,
but we need to go out wider.
Wider?
Yeah, I can feel
it rubbing on my neck.
I can feel it right there,
you know what I mean?
Mm-hmm.
Yeah, we got to widen them.
The problem is, we got
our holes cut too narrow,
We need to open them up
for wider shoulders,
To go around your neck.
Let's just get these out here
as far as we can...
Okay.
...this way,
As close to the well core
as possible.
Make those adjustments and
then let's get them installed
And we'll be done
with this thing.
Today.
Today.
I got to go.
Adios.
Adios.
So we need to take
the headrests out,
Open up the slots,
and re-fit the covers.
Last thing we got to do is make
this quick little adjustment.
Everything looks great
in the car and we're done.
We can ship it.
¶¶
Dave: justin is all wrapped up
with the headliner
And seats in this mclaren.
It's time to go check it out.
Man, I've always
loved this body style.
So this particular car
and individual
Was here a couple years ago.
We did a blend
on the fender,
And I think we painted
the interior stuff
And a couple
of electrical things,
But I didn't really
get to drive it,
You know, when it
was down here.
I think I pulled it in and out
of the building, is all.
So what did you
do to it, justin?
Well, let's take
a look here.
¶¶
They brought it in because
there were really no seats
And it was essentially
just some foam
And some vinyl
wrapped up,
Kind of giving that feel.
Yep.
But we took and built the seats
from scratch -- fiberglass,
A little bit of wood,
some sheet metal.
This was what you were
measuring me for the other day
Was these headrests?
The headrests, right here,
So, and they turned out...
They look good,
they look really good.
And they work even better
than they look, so.
All 100% leather,
an alcantara headliner,
One-piece little
headliner here.
Oh, that looks good.
That looks really good.
Far out.
Justin's work on the inside
Rounded off all of
the rough edges.
Now the car is perfect,
inside and out.
But the only way to make sure?
I got to drive it.
I can only imagine being back
in the le mans days,
Back in the late '60s,
early '70s,
Driving something
like this.
This reminds me,
kind of,
Of a kid,
back watching
"Hardcastle and mccormick."
That's right.
It was always
the right choice for a car
To go chase bad guys in.
Yep, yep.
As long as you can get
in the car quickly.
This is a pain in the a*s.
Let's check out what's
under the hood, here.
It's a revver, small block,
first gear ain't no problem,
No kidding?
Yeah.
So you're saying
I don't have to shift?
No, not down
this street, so.
So does that mean I get
to take it down the street?
You think they would care
if we took for a little spin?
Let's do it.
Right on.
It's time to take it for a burn.
¶¶
These seats feel
really comfortable.
This is pretty awesome.
I love it.
The only thing missing
is a 4.6-mile road course.
This thing is awesome.
You're sitting super low
to the ground.
It's an awesome feeling.
The car has a ton of power.
I'd love to take it out
on the track.
This is going to really
mess up my hair, dude.
Whoo!
¶¶
We're tackling one of
the biggest projects
That have ever rolled
through our doors...
It doesn't get a license plate,
it gets an address?
...a 1958 continental
convertible.
We have it disassembled
and all 5,000 parts
Have been bagged and labeled.
We just got the continental
back from strip.
It's time to get
that chassis out,
Get it assembled and get
the two mated together.
¶¶
Joshua: we got this massive
lincoln in here,
And I know you thought this was
probably a school bus chassis,
But this is actually
a lincoln chassis.
Basically tearing it
all apart right now.
We're going to get it
a roller today
And then figure out
How we're going to mate
this thing to the body.
This 1958 continental
had no chassis.
It was a uni-body, so it was
really important for us
To create some good structure.
By use of an
after-market chassis,
We should be able to graft
that back into the floor.
It'll have all the strength,
plus the modern drive train.
This car's a uni-body car.
The fenders stay attached
to the whole body structure,
But we got to cut this
old frame structure out,
And we're going to
put this new frame in.
But we're going to keep it
a uni-body car,
So we got to make sure
everything is square
And then structure the car
so it's not moving on us.
Basically, we're taking every
bit of structure out of this car
And then putting
the structure back in,
So we got to support it all
while it's got nothing.
Joshua: so first thing we
need do is, basically,
Structure this entire car up,
Make an outer structure to keep
it from moving in any direction.
It is a convertible.
It is long.
It is uni-body, so without
all that structure,
It's just basically
going to be a wet noodle.
So we've got all the
supports in place,
So we're going to
start very carefully
Cutting the old structure out.
We've got our width
on our frame.
We're literally just
going to measure it out
And keep it as close
as we possibly can
And just cut all the way
down the rocker on each side.
Then so we can pull that out
and the frame comes up in,
It'll just be very,
very close to the edge.
I'm not down with
cutting way out farther
And then building stuff.
I want to get it
as close as possible,
And then if we have
to cut anything else
Or build anything else,
that's fine
But I want it to fit tight.
It's less work in the end.
¶¶
So we finally got
the uni-body cut out.
Now we're going to slide
the new chassis up inside.
All right.
Whoa.
We've got everything in,
and it fits perfect.
¶¶
Last step before we
weld everything together
Is get the laser on it
And make sure everything
is absolutely perfect.
It's at the top edge
of the 29.
You say top of 29?
Mm-hmm.
Yeah, top of 29 on that.
Everything has to be perfectly
level, perfectly square,
Because once we weld
this thing in,
It's...
That's all we got.
No chance after that.
I'm at 23 7/8.
Bottom, top?
Like, dead nuts.
Straight across the line.
So we're an eighth inch
lower on that side?
Hmm.
So this is why we check
and double check stuff,
Because if we had already
started welding this together,
We would've been screwed.
This should be an easy fix,
a little bit of adjustment
On one side of the frame,
and we should be all right.
All right.
Same as that side?
¶¶
Okay.
Yeah?
Yeah.
See if stayed
the same up here.
Right at the top of 29.
Right on the top of 29?
Yeah.
Same.
All right.
Well, the frame is level.
So far, we've got
it dead straight.
Now we've got to back and do
the same thing with the body.
Since we're putting a frame
in a uni-body car,
They've all got to be perfect
Because once we weld
this thing back together,
It's a uni-body car again.
There ain't no changing it then.
So now that we have
the frame all level,
We have to do the exact
same process to the body.
Yeah.
Everything is level.
I'm confident.
Let's weld this baby.
¶¶
Dave: I've been hearing a lot
of pounding and grinding,
And I'll tell you what,
it's been a few minutes
Since I've been
down in the shop.
Time for me to go check in.
-Hey, dave...
-How goes it?
...you ever been in the trunk
of one these at a drive-in?
Not one of these,
but yes,
I did sneak into drive-ins
when I was a kid.
Really?
Yeah!
That's awesome.
I saved $4.
That was popcorn
and a soda.
Four bucks was huge back
in the day.
Wait a second.
It wasn't that long ago.
You're old.
Yeah.
Ummm....
How's this going?
It looks pretty dang awesome,
if you do ask me.
Well, I think
it looks fantastic.
So where we're at is,
You can see the frame rails
are nice and narrow.
We've got room
for tires for days.
The only thing we have...
Can we move these rams in-board?
That's exactly...
And you only have to go
in-board, what?
Three inches?
Three inches.
Just move them in-board.
Let's go with more wheel.
Yeah.
I definitely like the idea
of expanding that
Because one other thing,
if you look at the design,
Is we're getting away
from the skirt,
And we need to cove
the rear quarter panels
To match what the fronts are.
It's no longer a grandma's car.
It's a hot rod.
So, what we're going
to do is graft in
Some front fender sections
from the same style of car,
But we're going to
do it without skirts.
This should allow us to see
more of the rear wheel
And have a lot more impact
of looking like a hot rod.
Speaking to that, we need
to find some of those.
Preferably.
Do you want to just find
another set of front fenders
And we'll just build
them off of that?
Uh-huh.
I like the idea.
Uh-huh.
I think that seems like
The simplest solution.
Well, simple.
I don't think it's worth
chopping it,
But the lower this car
sits, the better.
Oh, we'll get it down.
All right.
Looks good, man, you guys
are doing a great job.
I know, it looks
awesome, huh?
Yep.
All right. Cool.
Keep after it.
Thanks.
You bet.
So while we wait
for the fenders to arrive,
We're going to make these tubs
huge for some big old meats.
Meats means tires,
in case you were wondering.
So to make room for these
big old tires,
We're going to need
The tricky part with this car
is, it's a convertible,
So when we go wider
with the tubs,
We really have to consider
Where is that convertible
top going to live?
So you'd never even know
I cut 4 inches out of it
and put it back together.
That's how it should be.
All right. So now I need to add
this other side of the tub on,
And then I can put everything
back in and see how it fits.
¶¶
All this to get
a little bit bigger tire,
But with the v12
it's going to have in it,
It's going to need
some meat on the back.
This is definitely
going to be a cool car.
Will: so now that we got
the tubs in, you know,
There's just a couple things
we have to consider
With this convertible top cover.
The actuators that move
it had to move also.
Moses has got
all that stuff moved.
Now I'm going to go check out
and see if it's working.
¶¶
Everything looks
and sounds great.
Ready to close the lid
on this one.
Hey, everybody, kevdogg here.
Do you guys remember
when dave and justin
Took that mclaren for a ride?
It didn't really go as smooth
as we showed it.
It was ridiculous.
Watch this.
Just step into the...
Onto the panel.
I don't know who
would be better --
Sardines or dave and justin.
This is the time in my life
That I'm just not going
to ever get back,
And neither is dave or justin.
They look cute, though,
now that they're in.
Ow! Hot!
Yeah, it is hot,
because it's summertime.
They rally it on the highway,
why can't we?
Maybe because we can't
get buckled in.
Who's the face of safety?
Dave kindig.
I'm good.
You beat me.
I hope his hair doesn't
scratch the interior.
All right. So what do we
got to do to start this thing?
What do you mean?
Just turn the key.
That's ridiculous.
Turn the key.
[ Engine starts ]
They're not even going to be
able to close the doors.
Let it drop and just
kind of a...
There you go.
There we go.
I was going to help,
but that's embarrassing.
I'm assuming
this is first.
Nope, that's second.
That's reverse.
So, okay, so...
First is this way?
There you go.
I'm in awe.
First or third.
[ Engine stops ]
That's...
[ Engine starts ]
This is ridiculous.
There we go.
I hope they don't need
my help getting out.
¶¶
Ridiculous. I hope you all
enjoyed watching that
As much as I did.
We've been grinding along
on a '58 continental
For a good friend of ours,
tad leach.
So far, we've taken tad's car
to the ends of the earth
When it comes to customizing.
We've completely
disassembled it,
Stripped it all the way down,
done a new chassis underneath
And built it back
into a uni-body.
There ain't no
changing it then.
Now that the tubs are in place,
it's perfect timing,
Because the new front
fenders just showed up.
Well, we're not replacing
the front fenders.
We're actually
going to use these
For the rear quarter panels.
This is going to be
a nice design cue.
Kris: I don't even want to
get close to this thing.
You know about these?
I know, I seen you glancing
at them as you was walking by.
As I understand, these used
to be front fenders,
And now they need
to be rear fenders.
Exactly.
Dave's idea of using
these front fenders
On the rear of the car
is really great.
Now we just got to get
all the proportions right
So it looks perfect
here in the rear.
So here's what
I know, though,
Is the proportions
are all wrong.
I'm pretty sure we're going to
have to stretch this out
So this works back here.
Then, we need to look at,
if we stretch this out,
Do we need to pull
this opening,
So we might be
splitting it here,
Just an inch, 2 inches,
Just the fender itself to get
the proportions to work right.
You know, ultimately,
We would pull the whole
quarter panel off...
Yes.
...and do all that work, and
then re-install it, you know?
Yes, okay.
I'm totally with that.
Well...
Completely.
Why do I feel like
I'm getting set up here
And the punchline
hasn't come yet?
Why are you laughing?
I would prefer to somehow...
Do it the hard way.
...avoid the process, but,
you know, I'm not going to...
You would prefer to do it
the hard way.
Well, say it
how you will.
No, I'm saying how it is.
As I'm seeing it,
there's no access
To the back side
of this thing.
Well, there's some areas
that it's very --
Yeah, very difficult
to get to.
We've got 6 1/2 feet
of welding to do,
With no access to the back?
That's going to be a mess.
Come on, kris!
You're living the custom dream!
Let's get excited!
We're getting to cut something!
Ultimately, I'd like to have
that on the bench,
That whole panel.
But we've already
done the rockers.
Yeah.
We've already done
a bunch of work up here.
So just take that
all into account.
You can look at this tonight
before you go home,
And you can sleep on it.
Can I call in
sick tomorrow?
Well, if it
makes you ill.
I'm feeling kind of woozy.
Well, then,
stop looking at it.
¶¶
Kris: okay, I got
a good night's rest.
I'm ready to tackle
this project.
Usually I like to work
smarter and not harder,
But I'm feeling
pretty dumb today.
First order of business is
to section up this front fender
And see how it looks.
¶¶
Got all the front fender
donor pieces cut up.
Take this corner and move it
about that far away,
And then I'll make this piece
to bridge these two,
And then I'll just put a piece
in here, and then the rest,
I'm just going to kind of fly
by the seat of my pants.
¶¶
I can't cut the quarter
panel off,
And I need access
to the back side
To stretch out the welds
And work the metal, basically.
So I'm going to have to make
this section on the bench
And take it back and forth
from the bench to the car
And see how it fits,
make changes, see how it fits.
Oh, it's looking pretty good.
¶¶
I got the shape right.
I know where it needs to go.
Now, I'm going to graft it in.
¶¶
It's tough. It's a lot of work
doing it on the car.
I'm glad it's done,
But hopefully I never
have to do it again.
No more '58 lincolns for me.
The fenders look great.
I don't know what kris
Was so worried about.
¶¶
A mysterious package
just arrived at the shop,
And it's piquing
everybody's interest.
-Whoa-h*.
-I think it's our engine.
Keep coming.
-Whoo!
-That is so cool.
Man, that's sweet.
Dave: the engine for tad's car
just showed up,
And this is, like,
some hot bikini chick
Walking through the shop.
[ Wolf whistle ]
Everybody is stopping and ogling
at it and making eyes at it,
And to be honest with you,
I don't blame them.
She's beautiful.
Dang!
That's a cool engine.
This is a custom-built,
all aluminum v12.
It's 600 cubic inches.
He's only made a few
of these engines.
But what's so special
about ours,
He custom-built a twin
magnuson supercharger intake.
Wow!
Yes, it's a cool engine,
but does everybody have to stop
And "ooh" and "aah" in the shop?
Why don't we get
the engine in the car,
And then everybody can "ooh"
and "aah" about it?
Ready?
Come in.
Come this way just a little bit
as you come in,
Just straighten up
will work.
This v12 engine just arrived,
and it's super cool.
It's massive.
It's gargantuan.
It's got a lot
of stuff going on.
But I'm not sure
if it's going to fit.
Down.
Good.
Yeah, just come forward
a little more.
Just drive it in until
it touches the cowl,
Until the structures
lay on that cowl.
Watch your fingers.
Yeah, I was just making sure
nothing else is going to hit.
Whoa, whoa, stop.
¶¶
Just drive it in
until it touches the cowl,
Until the structures
lay on that cowl.
Watch your fingers.
Donnie:
yeah, I was just making sure
nothing else is going to hit.
The engine, with the
transmission, is so long
That it's not going to fit.
Whoa, whoa, stop.
We can't go that far back.
We got to...
What?
We got something
right here.
[Bleep]
We just need to take
the cowl out.
We need to make some cuts.
We thought it would fit,
but it's one of those things
Until you actually
get it in place
And make the modifications
that need to be made,
That's where we're at.
So to get this engine
in where it needs to be,
We're going to have
to remove the cowl
So we can push it way back.
Suit up.
Ready.
Chop it.
¶¶
¶¶
Well, we definitely have more
room now, and I'm just curious.
Do you think we want
to throw the hood on
And get some kind of
just perspective eyeball
Before we get
the engine in the way?
Yeah, we can.
I kind of want to.
I just got back from lunch,
and now the hood's on the car.
Kevin: did I miss something?
I thought they were just
going to cut the cowl
And get the engine in.
Why is the hood on?
I really don't know
what the hold-up is.
-Right here.
-I was on lunch...
-It was right here.
-...eating my probiotics.
-We got a little piece of it.
-The film guy told me that word.
That's cool.
It's got a big cowl on it,
too, doesn't it?
Well, I was hoping the hood
came back all the way
To the windshield,
but it doesn't.
So we'll just have to see
because I really wanted
To keep those
superchargers in the hood.
One problem at a time.
Look at the overall picture,
But let's get the engine in,
And then we'll worry
about the hood.
Four and a quarter.
It's like there's
three guys behind me,
And they have this
badass engine to go in.
What's to debate?
They already cut it.
Just put the thing in.
What's taking so long?
Let me ask you a question.
Is the engine going to change
the way the hood fits?
No.
Let's put the engine in.
That's what we started
doing this morning.
Now we're moving on to the hood?
Maybe we should just pull this
back outside for now.
Ridiculous.
All right.
All right, kev.
Just calm down.
Now that we got the hood on,
we didn't waste any time.
I know what we got
to do to fix that.
We'll get this engine in,
good and mounted,
And everybody can relax.
-Is it ready?
-Yeah.
Will: you driving it?
Finally.
Safety first.
¶¶
Come on in there with it.
You're good.
This looks much better.
I think the engine
will slip right in now.
-Still good?
-Yeah.
Keep coming.
We're kind of where
we want to be.
-Okay. We good?
-Yes.
Phew! I'm glad that's over.
The engine's in.
It looks awesome, but we still
have a ton of work to do.
No rest for the wicked.
I'm just going to take a siesta.
Ahh.
Dave: I'm not really one to take
revenge on somebody,
But I do believe
in returning the favor.
And this time, I'm quite sure
I won't be outdone.
Hey, arthur, will you see
if you could get me
Some pictures of that dash?
-Yeah.
-Thanks.
Oh, I need to call
my vacation home.
-What the hell is this?
-[ Laughs ]
Whoop, whoop, whoop,
whoop, whoop!
-One bad mutha.
-That is cheating.
Hey, I want one of those.
Say whatever you want, kev,
I brought the bigger g*n
to a bigger fight,
And I'm the new sheriff in town.
¶¶
I'm out of b*ll*ts.
Kevin: the first rule of being
in a nerf g*n battle --
Don't use up all your b*ll*ts.
Dave: this is only one battle.
I'm sure the w*r will go on.
But for now,
time to switch gears,
As I'm needed
on another battle front.
Tad's coming down
to check out his car,
And he brought
a special guest --
"The boss."
This is my wife, sue.
We've been married,
actually, over 50 years.
Fifty years.
We were high school
sweethearts.
And we came down
to see our '58 lincoln
And the progress
that's being made.
Looks a little different
from the last time
You seen it,
tad, right?
I thought it was just
going to be the chassis
With the motor on it.
I didn't realize you'd really
started working on it.
Yeah. Sue, you haven't seen
any of this yet?
No, no.
I'm looking at it
and I'm thinking,
"It has to have color.
It has to have shine."
So we got the car, obviously,
all disassembled.
We sent it up.
We had it stripped.
We chemically dipped
the whole thing,
So we got everything
off of it.
So far, it seems like
they're very interested,
With a lot of head nods,
but not a lot of comments.
Sue, did I pass the test?
Overall, what do you think?
