A Castle of Our Own (2026)

Post by bunniefuu »

We're here in the final round

of the 19th annual

Vero Beach Sand Fest,

and once again,

sand-carving marvel Gordo Peck

seems primed to take home

the grand prize

yet again!

Gordo is on a roll this summer,

with three first-place wins

on the sand-sculpting circuit.

We had a chance to talk to him

down on the beach.

Gordo, can you tell us

what's next for you

after all of this?

Well, I'm heading back

to my hometown, Britt,

Cannon Cove, Oregon,

for the Cannon Cove

Sandcastle Festival.

It's where it all began for me.

It's a smaller competition,

but I like getting back

to my roots.

Well, good luck today,

and in Cannon Cove.

For Channel 73,

I'm Brittany Lee.

And in other news...

Oh, one second,

hey, Cannon Cove,

isn't that where you're going

with your dad?

Mm-hmm, yeah,

it's a five-hour-long drive.

Five-hour-long drive

on a beautiful coastline,

and aside from

the sandcastle competition,

you know, they have this

really great summer festival,

and there's a dance,

fun in the sun...

I got you a new dress.

Don't worry, it's one of

the ones you already wanted.

You're welcome.

Thanks, Mom.

Hey, uh, how did you do

on your, uh, your chem final?

Uh, 30...

Oh, no.

Did I just delete

my entire file?

Hey, you know that thing

that was happening

with your design scheme?

I think it just happened

to mine.

Can you please call IT for me?

Thank you.

Um, hey, I'm gonna...

I'm gonna drop you off

at your dad's,

because I have

this meeting tonight,

and he's going to

bring you back tomorrow

to pack your stuff.

Yup.

What's wrong?

Nothing. It's fine.

So, are you really excited

about your driver training

that you're doing

with Becca and Amy?

I filled out that form

that you needed filled out.

Yeah, that's...

not happening anymore.

What?

Why didn't you tell me?

When did you want me

to tell you?

After your conference call,

or in between

these computer crashes?

Okay...

Look, I know.

Lily, I know that you do not

want to be sitting here

waiting for me to drive you

to your dad's,

but you have to remember,

I'm doing this for us,

you know, for you, for college,

and-and for that spring break

trip to Paris.

To replace

the summer trip to Paris

that didn't happen?

Ooh, or how about

that winter break trip?

Lils...

we are gonna get there,

I promise...

right after

I am done this project.

Okay, well,

you're always going to have

another project, Mom.

I'm gonna go wait in the car.

Okay.

I'll be right there...

Mm-hmm.

Soon.

Lily! Marley!

Come on in.

- How are you?

- Good, how are you?

Good, good.

Do you want anything to drink?

Coffee, tea, anything?

No, thank you.

I, uh, I actually

have to get back to work.

Beth, congratulations

on the promotion.

Oh, thank you.

About time those 12-hour days

finally paid off.

What, they pay off?

I can't wait for that to happen.

Your father's sweet tooth

is out of control,

so you and I

are baking cookies tonight.

Okay.

Wait, I thought he can't have

flour... or sugar.

Well, I've got a plan for that.

Yeah, it's, uh, sugar free,

gluten free...

oh, yeah, fun free.

- Let's go.

- Bye, Mom.

Bye, honey. I love you.

- Bye, Beth.

- Bye.

Why are you

looking at me like that?

What are you talking about?

You haven't changed

in five years, Dan.

The Singapore project, okay,

the investors are flying out,

and they are ready

to make a deal,

43,000 square feet

commercial space,

built by me.

And they're coming next week

when you're supposed to be

in Cannon Cove.

Hopefully

not for the whole week,

and I hate to ask,

but can you get

a couple of days off

and take Lil?

I'm gonna try to make it

for the last few days.

The whole point of the trip

was for you two

to spend time together.

I know, and I feel awful,

but this is going to be

so lucrative, okay,

and you're still a 25%

silent partner in the company.

It's gonna pay

for Lily's college.

I know, I know.

It's just you and I

both work so much,

and we have to show up for her.

I'm gonna do my best

to get this deal done quick

and be there

by the end of the week.

But it's not guaranteed?

Okay.

We are really k*lling it

at this whole teenager thing.

Yeah.

I gotta get back to work.

- Okay. Good to see you.

- Okay. I'll see you.

Marley,

can I grab you for a sec?

Yes.

The Filmore Group project,

they've agreed to hear our pitch

for a series of 12 strip malls.

- That's great!

- Mm-hmm.

I thought they were going to go

with a different firm.

I sort of told them

that you would handle

the designs for the malls.

But Joan, I'm already

up to my eyeballs.

I mean, I can barely handle

what I've already got

on my plate.

Yeah, but they wanted you.

Everyone wants you.

You know, you should

really be flattered.

I am flattered.

I just...

I mean, there are so many

good architects on our team.

I think you might

have to say no this time.

I can't say no,

because then they'll go

somewhere else.

Competition is fierce, Marley,

you know that.

I need you on this.

I've actually planned this trip

with my daughter,

um, and I didn't want to be

on a computer the whole time,

so I-I just...

I really need

to connect with her.

And you will,

until she decides

to bury her head in her phone

and completely ignore you.

I mean, that's what my kids do.

Yeah, but see,

that's what I'm trying to avoid.

Marley, please,

just do it for me.

It's a short-term problem.

Just for this month, I promise.

- Sure.

- Okay.

Okay, I feel like you've

said this to me before, though.

Maybe,

but that's just

the gift and the curse

of being the best, Marley.

Hmm.

Number eight, this is us.

Look how cute this is.

Ooh, I wonder

if they told your dad

about the construction.

Hopefully it's not too loud.

Are you going to spend

the whole vacation in the car?

There's fun things to do here.

We heard about it on the news.

So, that sandcastle festival

thing sounds fun.

You know,

I built a sandcastle once.

It was an ostrich.

Mom!

What did I do?

Are you ready

to have the very best vacation

of your life?

Yes? Let's go!

This is adorable.

I mean, it has everything

we could possibly need.

It even has board games.

Look! There's backgammon.

We could have

a backgammon tournament,

and you could teach me

how to play chess again.

You hate chess.

No, I don't hate chess,

as long as I'm playing with you.

Oh, wow.

Look at these counters.

I wonder if they're original.

Um, Mom?

I'll call the landlord.

I can ask about

the construction too.

Thank you.

You're welcome.

Yeah, we'll just

be here unpacking,

so we'll let the plumber in.

Oh, well,

that is really great to know.

Okay, thank you.

Bye.

So the plumber is on his way,

and Irv, the landlord,

says he has a deal

with the guy next door,

so no construction noises

past 6:00 p.m., hard out.

This is really beautiful.

When the waves calm down,

we could, uh, go for a swim.

The water's 56 degrees.

I looked it up.

Okay, um, we go for a walk

on the beach

and look at the water

and never go in.

What's wrong?

Nothing.

I'm gonna go and unpack.

Okay.

Hi! Hey, that was so fast.

I mean, I just

got off the phone with Irv.

Hi.

Um, hi.

Anyway, um, come in.

The problem is this way.

It's-it's in the kitchen,

as plumbing problems

usually are.

So it's, um,

just, uh, right over here.

Irv had mentioned that

he asked you to fix it before,

but it's, uh, still broken,

not that I'm reprimanding you.

I mean, it's not my place,

but it seems like

a pretty easy fix.

I mean, not that I'm saying

that your job is easy.

I mean,

you know better than I do.

Well, it so happens I do.

Are you, uh,

are you gonna check that?

You have 34

unread text messages.

If I had 34 unread

text messages,

I would be fired,

because it's-it's my boss

who's usually the one

that blows up my phone,

or my daughter

if she needs a ride somewhere.

Are you sure you don't want

to check that?

I mean, it...

it could be an emergency.

Trust me, it never is,

and I prefer to live

in the present moment,

where I know my time

belongs to me.

Huh.

How lucky are you

that you get to have

that kind of luxury

where you can just not be

at anyone's beck and call?

Well, it's not luck.

It's a choice.

Ooh, hi, Irv.

Yeah, yeah, the plumber's...

Not in town?

Okay.

Okay, yeah, uh,

thanks, Irv.

Well, uh, it just turns out

that you have a worn-out washer.

I'd like you to tell me

exactly who you are right now.

- Okay, listen...

- You just stay back!

Who are you?

I think you might wanna

be careful with that thing,

because you could sort of

take someone's eye out

if you try really, really hard.

- Try me.

- I wouldn't dare.

Look, I'm Adam Sullivan,

and I'm, uh, the owner

of the house next door.

I was just getting something

out of my truck,

and you intercepted me.

Are you even a plumber?

No.

Well, then, why did you say

that you were?

I don't think I mentioned...

I didn't say anything.

I... you just seemed determined,

and I figured

I'd come in and help.

By the way, I don't have

this exact washer in my toolbox.

I'm gonna head over to

the hardware store later today,

and I'll bring it back to you

tonight, okay?

Unless, of course,

you want to wait

for the plumber who ghosted Irv.

No. No, um...

I really appreciate your help.

I'm Marley Hansen,

and I am the renter,

and I am also a mom

visiting from Seattle, and...

a very questionable

self-defender.

Well, it's nice to meet you.

Nice to meet you too.

You have no impulse

to look at that at all?

Like, no-no curiosity factor?

No.

Hmm, what a way to live.

Hmm.

You should be studied in a lab.

You know, I think people

that can't resist the urge

to check their phones,

those are the people

that should be studied.

Can I please at least, uh,

pay you something

for just intercepting you?

No, don't worry about it.

Matter of fact,

I owe Irv a favor anyway.

Oh, and by the way,

I wanted to apologize

for my truck being parked

in front of your cottage.

- No...

- No, look, I mean,

look at my driveway.

It's packed.

No, and-and I'm sorry for,

you know,

dragging you in

when you clearly

have a lot going on next door.

No apology necessary.

It's just the neighborly way

around here.

I'll be back

with that new washer.

- Okay.

- All right.

- Have a good day.

- Thanks.

Hi! Do you want ice cream?

We should get ice cream.

- Okay.

- Let's go.

Hello, everyone.

It's good to see you all

on this glorious summer day

in beautiful Cannon Cove.

I am Mayor Betty Finch,

and I would like to officially

welcome you all

to the 55th Annual

Sandcastle Festival.

Ooh!

If you haven't already

signed up for the competition,

there's still time.

Just go see Sadie over there

at the registration booth.

Amateurs are welcome

and even encouraged.

What?

I'm an architect.

You are an artiste.

I bet you we could make

something pretty spectacular.

Hmm?

I'm gonna go check out

that art gallery back there.

- Oh!

- Thanks, Mom.

I'm gonna go

and get some information.

- Okay.

- Okay!

- You like that?

- Hmm?

It's my mom's gallery.

She has me watching the place

while she's volunteering

out there.

You an art fan?

Yeah.

My friends at home

think it's boring.

Art is subjective.

My mom says that.

"One person's beauty

is another person's blob."

Yeah.

Yeah, that's

what I like about it.

It's-it's different

for everybody.

Well, I'm Paige.

Are you here

for Sandcastle Fest?

Lily,

and I don't even know

if my dad knew about it.

He just rented a cottage here

from some guy named Irv.

Oh, next door to my uncle.

Oh.

Sandcastle Fest is super fun.

All of us participate.

You're gonna like it.

Yeah, maybe.

Well, a few of my friends

are going to get pizza later.

You should come with us.

- Really?

- Mm-hmm.

You don't even know me.

You're my Uncle Adam's neighbor,

and you like art.

I know everything

I need to know.

Okay.

Here. What's your number?

Let's switch.

Hi. Sandcastle-building

competition.

You interested in participating?

Okay, so what sort of people

actually

enter into this contest?

It's not as competitive as some.

Most people do it

just for fun...

except for Gordo Peck.

He's actually a pro,

but he comes back here

for the low-hanging fruit.

I think I've heard of him.

Do not tell him that.

Oh! Okay.

So, what do you say?

Do you have any tips

on getting a teenager to join?

The prize money is 5,000.

Ooh, that ought to work.

We have no chance in winning,

but let's do it.

Well, it's like

my brother always says...

Life begins

when you step

out of your comfort zone.

You again.

Hi.

Mr., uh,

34 unread text messages

and profound life lessons.

I guess you've met my brother.

I actually cleared a few

of those texts, by the way.

- Oh, really?

- Yeah.

More than six?

No, are you kidding me?

Come on, absolutely not.

Who's got that kind of time?

Here you go.

Uh, now let's just see

if I can get

my teenager on board.

It's nice to see you again.

You as well.

What?

Come on, she's just

renting Irv's house.

With her whole family?

Because I didn't see

a wedding ring.

It's just her

and her daughter, Sadie,

and I know what you're doing,

and please stop, okay?

That is some lucky geography

for you, Adam.

Pretty lady like that

renting Irv's house?

Why don't you understand

the word "stop"?

I mean, I guess that's

one benefit

to you still being there.

When are you going to finish

that house and unload it?

Before the end of summer?

What do you think

I've been doing?

Stalling! You already got

two offers on it.

Yeah, two offers.

They were lowball offers,

by the way.

So finish.

I am.

I'm gonna get a coffee.

You don't deserve one.

Cream? Sugar?

Yes, please!

Yeah, so,

can I hang out with her?

She's our next-door

neighbor's niece.

I know, but this trip

is supposed to be for us

to spend time together.

And we will,

but she really likes art,

and she asked

to hang out with me.

Okay.

Well, I think it's really great

that you've already

made a friend.

And she said

that they all do

the sandcastle contest.

Oh!

Well, that's really great,

because I've already

signed us up.

Mom!

No, we're going to get excited,

and then you're going to get

more work deadlines, and...

Nope, Lils.

I won't let that happen.

It's going to be you and me

until your dad gets here,

I promise.

You know nothing about sand.

No, that's not true.

I know plenty about sand.

You know, I know that

if you get sand in your car

after you've been at the beach,

it's really,

really hard to get out.

Yeah, and I also know

that there is a cash prize

that can go towards a trip.

Paris?

Finally?

I am not going to let anything

get in the way this time.

Okay, I'm in.

Oh, that's the spirit!

Let's go sandcastle.

How about this one, Sadie?

No!

What about now?

Nada!

Great.

Looks like I gotta

buy myself a new panel.

Oh, man, this list just keeps

getting bigger and bigger.

Ask her to contribute, Adam.

You bought this house together.

Yeah, I'm sure she, uh,

would love to hear from me.

I think she's a little too busy

with her new house

and her new husband

to, uh, be bothered

about anything

about this old news.

The sooner

you unload this place,

the sooner you can move on too.

It's not something

that happens overnight.

You have been working

on this place

for almost a year.

So?

So you're turning into

the Winchester House lady

who just keeps building

and building to avoid...

Avoid what? Ghosts?

'Cause I kind of think

that's what

she was trying to avoid.

Yes, only your ghosts

are the proverbial kind.

Right.

I'm a professional,

and I will not put my name

on something that is half done,

full stop.

Okay.

I brought a cooler full of fish.

Oh, no, please.

Uh-huh, yeah.

Ralph caught it this morning.

- No, no, no, no.

- Salmon.

He wants you to have it.

I'm all fished out, Sadie.

Come on,

I'm becoming a pescetarian.

Well, that means

you only eat fish,

so you're welcome.

Okay, well, then I'm the...

whatever the opposite

of that is.

This is how he deals

with his stress

after the heart attack.

All right.

You know Ralph.

There's no arguing with him.

Just give it away.

Maybe be a good neighbor.

Stop it.

Stop, stop...

I'll text you later

about the festival.

Yeah, okay...

Not that

you'll check your phone.

No. Why start now, right?

- Love you!

- Love you too.

And unlike other expensive,

dreary hobbies,

sandcastles can be made

with tools or utensils

from your very own home.

Now, I love using

a big metal spatula like this,

but just don't tell my husband,

because it's his favorite.

It just cuts the sand superbly,

and it flips a mean pancake.

Try it like this.

Great! You're doing it!

No, I'm not, lady,

not even almost.

Your, uh, water-to-sand ratio

is, uh,

it's a little off.

Clearly.

Yeah, you want to build

the structure first

with molds and forms,

make sure that sand's

nice and tight,

and then you can

work on the ratio.

Oh.

Well, you see the-the...

this gal on the Internet told me

that all I actually need

is her husband's

favorite spatula.

Oh, and my most beautifully

creative instincts

for the greatest hobby

in the whole entire world!

Yeah, she sounds like a quack.

I just...

You know what?

This is why you don't

trust things on the Internet.

And you're just

learning this now?

Yes.

I just... I don't know

what I was thinking.

I am a designer, you know?

I'm not the nuts and bolts

of a project.

Really?

What kind of designer are you?

Oh, I'm an architect, actually.

Wow. Houses?

Strip malls.

Fancy.

Nope.

- Not even a little bit,

- Oh.

But it does pay the bills.

That's all right.

I mean, you get to create

something from nothing, right?

Have an idea in your mind,

and then next thing you know,

you're building a strip mall

with a dry cleaners

and a mailbox place.

And if you're lucky,

you get a locksmith.

Livin' the dream.

So they say.

You know, I guess

this is what happens

when you... when you try to,

you know,

get out of your comfort zone

for your kid.

Listen, I have got

some molds and forms

back at the house.

I can loan 'em to you

if you want, or...

- Yeah.

- Yeah?

Yeah, I'd really like that.

Okay.

Please.

All right, follow me.

- Thank you.

- All righty.

Come on in.

Oh, wow, this is

really beautiful.

Is this all original?

Yeah. Yeah, this is...

This is all me.

All new.

Huh.

Getting to create

something... custom

and not formulaic or bland is...

You're very lucky.

You are going to be happy here

when it's done.

Yeah, well, uh,

I'm sure somebody will be,

but it's not gonna be me.

Oh, I thought that Irv said

that this was your house.

It is my house,

it's just it's...

become an investment property.

Oh, so it didn't

start out as one?

Oh!

Look what I have found here.

Huh?

Here are the sand molds,

and I have an instruction sheet

that my father wrote out

after our first time competing.

Now, this is going to give you

the perfect recipe

for ideal carving sand.

This is what I really need.

I will bring this

all back to you

in mint condition.

Don't worry about it, come on,

no worries at all.

I can't imagine myself

needing this anymore.

I mean, it was just...

something between my dad and I,

and then once he was gone,

it, you know,

wasn't the same.

But it was good for you,

you know,

doing the contest together?

Oh, yeah, are you kidding me?

It was the best.

It was, uh, some of

our greatest moments together,

and you will see...

and so will your daughter.

I hope so.

I know so.

Thank you very much for this.

You're welcome.

Good luck.

Marley!

Marley, hold up.

Hold on a second...

Um...

do you like fish?

That's a really strange question

to chase someone down with.

Yeah, true, but it's not

a difficult one, right?

No, it's not.

I do like fish.

Great.

Then this is for you,

freshly caught.

By you?

No. No, not by me.

My, uh...

by my brother-in-law.

Oh.

Yeah, he, uh,

he had a mild heart attack,

so his doctor

wanted him to relax.

Trust me, he's so relaxed,

we, uh, can't find enough space

in our freezer

for the fish, so...

Well, um, for your

brother-in-law's health,

- thank you.

- You're welcome.

It's salmon, by the way,

I hope that's okay.

Oh, well, that's the only fish

that Lily will eat, so, um...

- Oh.

- Maybe a win for me today.

You know, I, uh, I have a niece

that's about the same age

as your daughter.

She calls me the cool uncle,

which drives her mom crazy,

because she's always

coming to me first.

All the fun and no rules.

True, but I realized

why she comes to me.

Why?

I don't try with her.

I just... I just am.

I think, um, anything that I am,

uh, isn't working for Lily.

Well, why don't you try to be

on her level a little bit,

you know?

Don't try so hard,

maybe don't ask

too many questions.

Just be.

Yes, the great proverb,

made up by you.

No, listen.

I'm telling you,

in this competition,

you guys are going to

have to work as a team.

You're going to

have to come together as equals.

Well, I have no idea

what I'm doing,

and Lily has no idea

what she's doing,

so in that, we are equals.

All right, well,

just find someone who does,

and join their team.

Yeah,

but I don't know any... one.

Adam, I...

No. No, no, no, look,

I gotta finish my house,

come on.

Would you please help me?

I can feel my daughter

slipping away from me,

and I know that they say

that it's normal

during the teenage years,

but I just feel so guilty.

I've let her down

with my work schedule,

and it's just...

Could you please help me

get my daughter back?

That's probably

the most dramatic sob story

I've ever heard in my life.

That was good.

I mean, I had to

lay it on thick, right?

Oh, you did, you did,

you laid it on real thick...

No, but seriously, I just...

I've got what,

two more years left,

and then I'm going to be

in her rearview mirror, and...

I just, I really want

the time that we have

to just count.

Okay, fine, I'll do it,

but no more Internet videos,

and I'm running point

on this team, okay?

- Deal.

- All right. Good.

Thank you so much.

- You're welcome.

- I just...

Oh, thank you for...

all of this.

Enjoy the fish.

We will.

The location stats for this one

only have room

for four storefronts, so...

Okay, I will do that

for the downtown

Seattle location.

Okay, uh, you'll have the plans

in the morning.

Okay, Joan, bye.

Hey.

Um, I made salmon.

Where'd you get salmon?

I went to the store

with you this morning.

The guy next door.

Freshly caught.

Aw, fake plumber?

Mm-hmm. Adam.

Yeah.

He actually has experience

with sandcastle competitions,

so he is going to help us

and teach us

everything that he knows.

Yeah.

So, how was, uh, pizza

with Paige and her friends?

They were really nice,

and they like art,

and some of them are also

in the competition,

so we're gonna help each other

draw up design ideas.

That's really great.

You know, I think that

it's just...

great.

It's so great.

Mm-hmm.

So, that dance under the stars,

um, apparently

they have a barbecue before,

and they've got pulled pork

and ribs and, uh,

like a tower of burgers.

Yeah, Paige mentioned it too.

She said they all go.

It's gonna be fun

to go with you.

How's the salmon?

It's really good.

Thanks, fake plumber!

Joan...

Whoa. Whoa, whoa, whoa.

Whatever it is, don't take it

out on that poor little laptop.

Ah...

just look at this view.

It's summer.

I am supposed to be on vacation,

relaxing and spending time

with my daughter,

and they just keep

adding more to my plate.

Well, my niece is in the cottage

with your daughter,

and they're working

on their sketches,

so there's another obstacle

to your plan.

True,

and Lily says

that Paige is really nice.

Oh, she is, she's the best.

She's family... she's...

and she also loves

when new blood comes of town,

so I think your daughter's

gonna have to hang out

with her the whole week.

Well, it's, uh,

it's a good thing.

Um, there's a little bit

of teen drama

going on back home,

so it's...

it's a good distraction.

And what's

a great distraction for you?

Oh...

Uh, well, other than

sandcastle building

that's above my pay grade...

Okay, fair.

I don't really

have time for distractions.

Ah!

I just...

I just wanted one week...

Hmm.

You know, for myself

and-and for my daughter,

and-and the client

is-is not satisfied,

and-and my boss

keeps texting me.

Well, tell your boss

you're busy.

Tell her to wait,

or turn it off.

What?

Well, not

if I want to keep my job.

Do you want to keep your job?

Yes, of course

I want to keep my job.

You paused.

You did. You totally paused.

Well, I paused because

that is a really silly question

to ask someone.

Marley, it might be silly,

but according to me,

your primary source

of your stress is your job,

and I don't know about you,

but maybe it's time

for a change.

That may be true,

but it is also

the primary source of my income,

so it is not that simple.

Ah, right.

You-you-you work hard,

and you build yourself

a reputation,

and then you write

your own ticket.

Yeah, but are you?

Writing your own ticket?

Okay, I'm done with this.

What are you doing?

Well, I mean, apparently

you had some feelings

about my phone earlier,

so I think it's only fair

I have some feelings

about yours.

You know, I'm gonna throw

this phone in the ocean,

because obviously you can't

take your much-deserved break,

so I figure I'll do it for you.

Okay, please, can you just...

can I have my phone back?

- Be serious.

- I'm very serious.

Nope, as a matter of fact,

I'm deadly serious...

No, that's...

You know, she keeps calling.

That's her again?

Okay, you just...

This is not funny...

No wonder you're stressed

out of your mind, to be honest.

Okay, I appreciate the idea,

but, like, real...

That's my phone.

I know it's your phone.

Look at this, huh?

It's not every day

you get to walk down the beach

followed by a beautiful woman.

You know, you're not as cute

as you think you are.

What? I think I'm a little cute.

Oh, there's your boss again.

Wow, she's relentless,

this lady.

Yes, I know.

She is relentless,

but she's also

the best in the business.

Well, that being said,

I think the best in the business

needs to cool off.

I'm gonna throw it

in the ocean for a nice...

Okay, no...

Okay, not everyone can live

in the moment all the time

like you do.

Sure they can.

You just choose not to.

Oh...

Marley, come on,

you're on vacation,

you're on this beautiful beach,

and you're thinking about

planning a strip mall.

I don't even want to be

planning strip malls at all!

There it is.

Hmm.

If my phone

so much as touches water,

you will owe me a new one,

and it'll be top of the line.

Come on, you know I wasn't

gonna throw in the water.

You know that.

I just wanted to get you

off that merry-go-round

just for a sec.

It's quite the realization

you had, too, huh?

You're a contractor

and unlicensed psychologist.

In the flesh.

What do I owe you

for such sage advice?

Um...

I think I'm gonna

hold on to this

until you settle.

- Okay, give it back.

- As a matter of fact,

your boss?

I just... I don't...

I'm not feeling it.

- Mm-hmm.

- Just not vibing with her.

Don't... don't you dare!

- Give me my phone back.

- What?

- I got... I can...

- No, I really...

- No? I played football.

- No.

- No!

- I can kick it.

What is happening down there?

Old people are so weird.

Okay, let's just start

with the basics, shall we?

Mm-hmm, I'm just

taking a video for my dad

so he can catch up

when he gets here.

Sounds good, sounds good.

All right,

drop to one knee, team.

Let's do this.

Okay, I want each of you

to grab and scoop up

a really good ball

of wet, chunky sand

just like this.

Put into a ball

just like this in your hand.

Now, if this ball

keeps its shape,

that means you've got

good consistency

and really good sand.

Should look something like that.

Oh, my god! Huh!

Look at you!

Wow, you're a pro!

- Oh, my goodness!

- Lily, that's good too.

You know, I taught Paige

everything I know, okay?

So if you have a problem,

you can always ask her, okay?

You should join our team, Paige.

Well, we we're just here

helping out your mom and you,

that's all.

Welcome aboard, Paige.

We can use

all the help we can get.

Guess you're in there, Paigey.

Okay!

That was good, you guys.

We need a good team name

before the opener tomorrow.

True. Yeah.

Oh, uh, "The Sandblasters."

Unfortunately, every year,

there's somebody who has a team

named the Sandblasters,

so that's a no-go.

How about "The Beach Bums"?

Like it.

But we are not bums.

We are winners.

Right. I have one.

"Miami Sand Machine."

- I don't know what that means.

- We're not even in Miami.

I'm making a fool of myself,

aren't I?

Um, "Sand and Deliver."

- Nice!

- Ooh! That's a good...

"The Sand of Silence."

- Oh, okay...

- Okay,

what about "Sand and the Fury?"

Oh...

What about "Last One Sanding"?

Because that's

what we're gonna be

when we win.

I like it.

- Mm-hmm, yeah.

- I like it.

- Yes?

- I like it. Up top!

Okay.

- Way to go, Mom!

- Thanks.

We have our name, team.

- Yes.

- All right, on "three."

One, two, three...

Last One Sanding!

Good morning, everyone!

I am here to welcome you

and declare the 55th annual

Cannon Cove Sandcastle Festival

is now officially open!

Today, each team

will be assigned their plot

and set their first design.

Now, as you know,

our theme is

Landmarks of the World,

and once your design

for the qualifying round

has been recorded,

you cannot change it,

so think very carefully

about what you want to build

before tomorrow.

Now, let's all go have

a great Cannon Cove Day,

and I hope to see you all

at the barbecue and dance

tomorrow night.

Let's go have some fun!

What's gonna be our landmark

for the qualifiers, guys?

What do you think?

And keep in mind,

we also need another one

for the finals, so...

you know, if we get there.

Paige and I were thinking

maybe the Eiffel Tower?

- Ooh, okay.

- That's great.

Ambitious, Lil, I like that.

I'll give you that.

Nothing worthwhile

ever came easy, so...

fine.

Do you know you sound like

one of those

quote-a-day calendars,

but like,

just a little bit smug.

Come on, these are gems,

all right?

I'm firing gems at you all day.

You should, uh,

take a couple to heart.

Eh, maybe not as gemmy

as you think.

Is that even a word?

- Yeah.

- "Gemmy"?

- Yeah.

- Well, then they're very gemmy.

Hmm.

- Adam?

- Yeah.

Have you ever built

a structure like that?

Like what?

Like the Eiffel Tower?

- Uh-huh.

- No, never,

but we're in the amateur

competition, okay?

So if we want to win,

we need to tell a story

through our sculpture.

Any ideas?

Did you know the Eiffel Tower

was supposed to be torn down

after the World's Fair?

- Yes.

- I did not know that.

- You knew that?

- Yes.

It's because of

the radio tower on top.

The government decided

to keep it up

because it was so useful.

I did a report on it

in fifth grade.

I really want to see it

in person.

My parents

were supposed to take me,

then me and my mom

were gonna go, but...

Hey, we haven't gone there yet,

but we will, I promise.

Okay, Lils?

I got a great idea.

Why don't we put you

in the sculpture?

A little miniature Lil

right there in the middle

of the Eiffel Tower.

I don't know about you guys,

that tells a story.

- That's right. Yes.

- Yeah!

- Hey, Adam.

- Whoa!

Gordo.

Back in the competition

after all this time?

Yeah, well, I just...

I'm just here

helping a few friends.

How's Amelia?

Still doing well in Phoenix?

Yeah, I'm sure

she's doing pretty well

in Phoenix there, Gordo,

thanks for asking.

Well, this is fun.

- Yeah.

- The old rivalry

lives to see another day.

Bye, friends.

Bye.

Oh.

Okay.

You see that man right there?

I want to beat him really bad,

so this is what we're gonna do.

The qualifying round

has two parts to it, okay?

The pound up and the carving,

and I suggest

we get down on that beach,

- and we start practicing, okay?

- Yes, yeah.

Because I-I really...

I really wanna win, all right?

- Let's go!

- Let's do it!

Looks good, Lily.

Okay...

I'm a disaster.

I feel like

I can't do anything right.

We will not be defeated

by a pile of sand.

First Becca and Amy

do drivers training without me.

They couldn't even wait

one week, and now this?

Hey, listen...

You know what?

Why don't you and Paige

go for a walk down to the water

and just... take a break,

and when you're ready,

you come back, and we try again.

- Okay.

- Yeah?

Okay, go.

Thank you.

Come on, it's okay.

Thanks, Paige.

She is just so hard on herself.

I wonder where she gets it from.

So, I've been taking

your advice.

Oh, okay. Really?

What advice is that?

Because I've been giving you

a lot of advice lately.

I think a lot of it's

pretty good, to be honest.

I have been meeting her

at her level.

Hmm.

You know, not asking

so many questions,

not prying,

and she seems

far less annoyed with me.

Hmm. That's good.

Yeah.

It's just so hard, you know?

When she's hurting,

I want to make her better.

But you can't.

I know,

but it never stopped me

from trying...

until I met you,

so thank you for that.

You're welcome.

But you know

what you can fix, though?

What?

You.

Are you implying

that I am broken?

No! No, not in the least.

No, not at all.

I just want you

to give yourself a break.

Go easy on yourself.

Let go.

Give yourself that break

that you want to give her.

I know exactly

how to do it, too.

Do not throw my phone

in the water.

No, no, no,

I'm not gonna do that.

I'm gonna do something

a whole lot better. Hey, girls?

Girls, why don't you guys

come on in here for a sec,

because we're gonna go

someplace else.

Where are we going?

Surprise.

- Oh! It's a surprise.

- Come on, let's clean up.

Yeah.

You got it? You got it!

Come on, let's go!

You know what I love

about kite flying

is it's virtually impossible

to stay tense

and keep the kite in the air.

It's the ultimate lesson

in letting go.

Tell me, uh, Sigmund Freud...

Yes.

Do you focus

on other people's situations

just so you can avoid your own?

What do you mean?

Just with Gordo

on the beach earlier.

Oh, come on, Gordo, it's just...

it's just an old rivalry,

that's all.

I'm not talking about Gordo.

Uh, Amelia, and the house?

Do me a favor, come here.

You try this.

Come here. Okay?

Got it?

Sure.

Focus. There you go.

You're doing it again.

Doing what?

Amelia.

Yeah, okay.

Um...

Well, Amelia and I

bought the house together.

It was a major fixer-upper...

Mm-hmm.

And we thought we were

gonna live there forever.

Once we got married

and started the renovation,

she came into our bedroom

one day

and gave me back the ring.

I don't know,

maybe I picked the wrong color.

It's hard, you know?

You think your life's

gonna go one way,

and then...

everything changes.

You sound like

you speak from experience.

I always thought that

I was gonna, you know,

- design houses...

- Really?

Or remodel homes, and...

What happened?

I don't know,

I guess I just got used to

life being a certain way.

You know, and then

my marriage ended,

and-and then

staying at the firm just...

just became comfortable.

Do you remember

the first thing I ever told you?

"I'm not a plumber."

No, no, no, after that.

Life begins when

you're out of your comfort zone.

Exactly.

Just... let go.

Not... no, not... Whoa! No!

Not the kite!

I meant in life.

It's a metaphor.

Well, next time,

you need to be more clear.

Hey, girls.

Hi.

It's for you.

Oh, wow.

Lils, this is incredible.

It's us.

You put me in there with you.

Our sculpture

is going to be more

than just the Eiffel Tower.

It's goals.

It was Lily's idea.

Now we have to go to Paris.

We have immortalized it in sand.

Yes.

You know, whatever happens,

win or lose,

this means everything.

We're gonna go

meet some people in town

and try and win

a giant stuffed teddy bear

at the carnival games.

She gets to keep it.

My mom banned

any more stuffed animals

from entering the house.

I knew I liked your mom.

Okay, goodbye.

- I love you.

- Bye.

I love you too.

Huh.

Hey, Dan.

Hey, how's the house?

Beth says it has a jacuzzi.

Uh, yeah,

we haven't used it yet.

We've been too busy.

Oh, I love to hear it.

Um, things are going well here,

so I think I'll be able

to relieve you by the weekend.

Actually, um,

I know that initially

this was supposed

to be your trip,

but, um, I would really love

to finish the sandcastle

competition with her.

She drew a picture of me and her

at the Eiffel Tower.

Wow, that is progress.

Yeah, no problem.

I'll book a hotel

for Beth and I,

and you can stay at the house

with Lils.

Thank you so much.

I really, really appreciate it.

Do you think

she'll open up to me

if I sign us up for, like,

a robotics cage fight

or something?

Well, I-I can't be sure of that,

but, um...

I am trying something new,

and I will tell you

all about it.

Any and all tips are welcome.

Mm-hmm.

Bye, Dan.

Bye.

Yes...

Hey.

Marley!

Marley, hey!

Oh!

I am so sorry.

I-I couldn't hear you.

It's okay.

It's okay, you seemed very...

engrossed, very serene.

Oh, yes, I am the picture

of serenity.

Cannon Cove

has that effect on people.

Hmm.

Listen, um,

what are you doing later?

Oh, uh, well,

since my daughter ditched me

to play carnival games

with her new friends, um,

I was just gonna do some work.

Think you might be in the mood

for some trout for dinner?

Brother-in-law again?

Yeah, yeah, he's, uh...

Talk about relentless.

I think he's solely responsible

for keeping

that bait shop afloat.

Uh... sure.

Great.

Yeah, um... my place.

Yeah, ain't mine,

I don't have a...

You know, no kitchen, so...

Um... 5:00?

Sounds good. Can't wait.

- Okay.

- All right.

- Good.

- I'll see you then.

See you then.

- Hey.

- Hi.

You gonna help me cook it?

Of course.

Okay.

So, does Gordo make a living

building sandcastles?

No, no, no,

Gordo doesn't make a living.

No, he's a trust fund baby.

- Oh...

- He just...

he just competes

for the attention.

Yeah, professionals

in this field,

if they want to make money,

they've gotta do it

on commissions,

um, corporate sandcastle events,

movies, retreats,

that kind of thing.

- Hmm.

- Yeah.

He really likes

to get under your skin.

Yeah, well... yeah, he does.

He, uh... he had a thing

for Amelia back in the day,

- but she picked me.

- Ah.

Which was rare,

because his family

was pretty prominent in town,

but yeah, he's pretty happy

when he, uh, thinks about her

breaking my heart, so...

All the more reason

to beat him tomorrow.

Tomorrow's the qualifying round,

so we're not gonna be able

to beat him down until Saturday.

Okay, well, I can be patient.

Okay.

So, tell me...

Mm?

What happened

with you and Amelia?

She came to me one day and said,

"I don't see you

as my forever anymore."

Oof.

What do you do

with that kind of information?

You know what I mean?

Well, why do you think

that was you?

- I mean, I don't know...

- Well, I mean...

- I don't know Amelia...

- No.

And I-I'm just

getting to know you,

but you seem like

such an exceptionally generous

and thoughtful person,

and, you know, just because

Amelia couldn't see that

doesn't mean that it's not true.

Thank you very much.

Really.

You're welcome.

Have you, uh,

have you dated much since?

Dating, it's...

it's, I don't know,

it's just, it's, uh...

it's unpredictable.

Oh, what is it that they say?

Mm?

The most reliable way

to predict your future

is by creating it yourself.

Look at you!

I've got cliches too.

You do, but I think

I'm a little better at it.

Probably.

Do you want to listen

to some music?

Yeah, fire it up.

Let's do it.

Whoa, whoa, whoa,

hold on a second.

Hmm?

Is that your website?

Yes.

Uh, it is very old,

and I-I didn't have the heart

to take it down.

Marley, this is amazing.

I used to do, um,

residential design

before joining the firm.

Mm-hmm?

I loved it.

You know, it was like a puzzle.

You and the client would...

would put the pieces

in place together.

Well, tell you what,

I've got a lot of clients

who'd be thrilled

with this kind of work.

Really?

Mm-hmm.

Hmm...

I wanted to be

an entrepreneur one day.

Really?

Yeah.

Yeah, but I was so young

and inexperienced.

You know, people

just weren't willing to...

to take a risk on you.

Well, come on,

you're not young

and inexperienced anymore.

Pardon?

No, I don't mean it like that.

No, I didn't mean it like that.

I think I'm still very young!

Yes, you are. Yes, you are.

I apologize. That's terrible.

- Uh, yeah.

- I mean,

I haven't done

residential architecture

in... 14 years.

Come on,

it'd be like riding a bike.

Oh, it's not at all

like riding a bike.

You know, I think

you need to start taking

a little bit of your own advice.

Stop working for someone else,

and start creating

the life you want.

Ooh.

- Oh...

- I think this is our song.

- Oh!

- Oh, yeah.

- Well...

- I'm feeling it.

I don't think I've ever

heard this song before.

Really?

Just listen to it, baby,

because it's gonna be

in your bones,

under your skin.

Matter of fact,

it'll get into your soul.

Oh.

It'll get into your heart.

- This is what you do.

- Oh, I'm telling you...

You distract.

What are you talking about?

You just try to get me

out of my head.

Oh, oh, oh, oh.

Maybe I wanna get

out of my head, huh?

Maybe I want to

get out of my head...

Are they playing music?

What is going on?

Whoo!

It smells like burnt fish.

The fish!

Oh...

Fish.

Who wants pizza?

Without further ado,

let's get to Round One

of the 55th annual

Sandcastle Competition.

Now, I want to remind you all

that sand sculptures

must consist of sand only,

so no smuggling in

any contraband.

No one has forgotten

the unfortunate incident

of 2018.

I specifically asked you

not to bring that up.

He cheated?

Yeah, they used slats.

He swears

it was an unintentional gaff

from one of

his teammates, but...

who knows.

He's totally going down.

- Totally.

- Mm-hmm.

Now, out of all the teams,

only the top four will qualify

and move on to the next round.

You only have two hours,

so keep your eyes on the clocks,

your ear on the bell,

and let's hustle,

hustle, bustle!

Let's go, let's go, let's go.

Come on.

You guys remember

what we talked about

on the way over here.

Slow and steady, no rushing.

Exactly. Why?

Because that's when

accidents happen, right?

Think we can manage it?

What do you say, team?

No, I do not.

What are you talking about?

You've got it, Mom.

Thanks, Lils. You too.

All right, team,

hands in, let's go.

On "three."

One, two, three,

Last One Sanding!

All right, okay!

You and me on sand duty...

Lily, Lily,

try not to m*rder the sand.

Befriend it, okay?

Meh.

I've got enough friends

here in Cannon Cove.

This sand is dust.

Way to go, Lils!

Don't listen to him.

Yes!

Okay, guys, careful...

Nice!

- Yeah!

- Look at that!

- Whoo!

- Wow.

We did it.

How amazing is that?

Come here!

Come here. Up top!

- Thanks.

- I learned from the best.

Let's take a photo for my dad.

This is your five-minute

warning, contestants!

Let's finish up strong!

You have five minutes!

We're gonna need

way more time than that.

We haven't even finished

the figures.

Everyone else

is so good at this.

Okay, hey, don't even look.

Comparison

is the thief of joy, okay?

I kind of think I'm rubbing off

on you there, huh?

Maybe.

Okay, let's finish strong.

Yes.

- Whoa!

- Oh!

- Oh...

- Oh, no!

I can't believe I did that!

The top

is the most important part!

That's why the whole thing

is still there!

Hey, no one here

is upset with you.

Nope.

Nope, this is for fun.

Win or lose,

look what we accomplished.

Look what we made together!

Okay?

You know what?

Maybe, um, I'll take them home

during the judging.

I don't think it's good for them

to be sitting here analyzing it.

I'll hang back

and get the results.

Okay.

You know what, girls?

Let's go back to the house

and have some popcorn

or something.

Come on.

Don't worry about it, Lil.

Look how good this is, come on.

Let's turn that frown

upside down, baby, come on.

- Yes!

- All right.

Let's go, girls.

Tools down, everyone!

Ooh...

It happens, bud.

Not to me, but, uh...

Yeah. Thanks, Gordo.

So you need this...

- This way?

- Yeah, that one there.

So, how did we do?

Well, unfortunately,

I'm sorry, guys,

we didn't make the next round.

It's my fault.

No, it is definitely

not your fault.

No, it's not your fault,

Lils, okay?

As a matter of fact,

we were really close,

one point away,

and you guys have never

done this before,

and you k*lled it.

You realize we had more points

than some veterans

in this competition?

Huh?

Wow, we have so much

to be proud of.

Yes, we do.

Yeah, and by the way,

I hear there's

a festival going on.

You hungry?

A little barbecue.

I think we should do

some dancing

to celebrate a job well done,

you guys.

Right, team?

But first... scoops are on me.

- Ooh, deal.

- Yes.

- You in?

- Done.

Let's do it.

- Okay, come on, girls.

- Come on.

Let's do this, team.

I'm a chip gal, myself...

- You should have got some.

- I should have, yeah.

Oh! Mom, Dad just sent a text.

He said...

"Signing papers tonight.

We'll be there

as early as tomorrow."

Great.

Did you tell him

we're out of the competition?

Yeah, he just said "Boo."

Man of many words.

You guys sound like you have

a good relationship.

Uh, he's my best friend

for 20 years,

and we both agree

that Lily

is the most important thing.

Yeah, she's a great kid.

She is.

The sass is real.

It's hard being a teenager.

I mean, you remember.

Actually, no, I don't.

I blocked that out.

Those horrible years.

Oh...

Oh.

Oh!

I've just...

I've been trying

to spend my days with Lily,

so I was up

till 3:00 in the morning

revising these new plans,

and I just...

I really don't want to hear

what's wrong with them

right now.

Just don't answer it.

Come on, you can do it.

I have faith in you.

Put Marley first,

give yourself one hour,

and then call her back,

but only if you want to, okay?

I don't want to.

- Then don't.

- I want to enjoy

this beautiful day.

I don't want to be

constantly thinking

about the soul-crushing designs

that wait for me

when I get home.

Marley, don't answer it.

Trust me.

- How do you feel?

- Ah!

- How do you feel?

- Liberated.

- Uncle Adam?

- Yeah.

Mom's waving you down.

Oh, hey.

There you are.

I've been looking for you.

What's up? You okay?

The judges found contraband

in one of the sculpting plots.

Gordo...

Unfortunately, no,

but the cheating team's

been disqualified,

and you guys had

the next highest score.

Does that mean we're back in?

- You're back in!

- We're back in!

We're back in!

Congratulations!

Yay, sis!

Thank you for bringing us

some great news.

Okay, team, listen, hey,

we've gotta, like,

focus here, okay?

We need to come up with

a landmark for round two

by tomorrow,

so put your thinking caps

on, all right?

- Okay.

- But first, tonight...

we dance, huh?

Oh...

- Okay.

- This is pretty good, right?

No idea what I'm doing,

but this is my only move.

This is my only move!

That's all I got.

We gotta teach him

some more moves.

Lils, you ready?

Coming!

Oh, honey,

you look so lovely.

I think tonight is gonna be

a really great night.

Yeah.

I'm having a lot of fun here...

with you.

I think it's just what I needed.

Me too.

Now let's go paint the town red.

Don't even

understand you sometimes.

Shall we?

We shall.

Marley Hansen!

Charlene?

I thought I saw you

on the beach today.

What are you doing

in Cannon Cove?

My niece lives here,

so every year,

we come

for the Sandcastle Festival.

Oh, that's fun.

Marley's the architect

who designed our remodel.

Nice to meet you.

Bye.

So, are you still at it?

Yes.

Uh, well, I'm more

commercial projects now.

Oh.

Well, they're lucky to have you.

15 years,

and I tell Jerry all the time

we're never selling.

That really means a lot

that you still like it so much.

It was nice

running into you, Charlene.

You too.

See you on the dance floor.

Okay. Bye.

Hmm...

Hi.

Hi!

Hi, Lily.

I love that dress.

I love your dress.

Thank you.

You two clean up so nice.

Oh, well, thank you.

You as well.

I mean, go big

or go home, right?

Whoever created that expression

vastly underestimated

my desire to go home.

I knew I liked you.

You wanna go dance?

Yeah.

Yay! Bye.

Bye!

I feel like I should thank you.

Oh! Uh, for what?

It's been a year

since Amelia left,

and Adam has been consumed

with that house,

revisiting plans,

changing direction,

improving the improvements,

but since you got here,

he's going out again,

smiling, having fun.

It's really nice to see.

So he likes to say

he lives in the moment,

but he's actually an avoider.

Oh, you do know him.

When he lets go of that house,

he has to let go

of what he thought

his life was gonna be.

It's hard having

such a blank slate.

Yeah, I mean, that's true,

but at the same time,

you know, having a blank slate

gives you a chance

to rewrite your story.

Thank goodness, Marley,

you got to town just in time.

I couldn't agree more.

Oh, I requested this one.

- Oh.

- Danceable. I mean...

Well, by all means.

What do you say?

Shall we?

We shall.

Smooth.

Uh-huh.

Have fun, kids.

I, uh, ran into

an old client of mine.

Oh, really?

I did her remodel.

You know, if that's not a sign,

I don't know what is.

Yeah, I was thinking

the same thing.

I haven't run into a client

in a really long time.

That's good.

I haven't

called Joan back yet today.

- Really?

- Mm-hmm.

Okay.

I left my phone at the cottage

because it was beeping

incessantly.

Mm-hmm.

That's good.

I don't even know

who I am anymore.

You are whoever you want to be.

You and me both

have the power to change, Adam.

You and me.

I know.

The sky's the limit.

Endless possibilities.

I could get used to this.

So could I.

You know, I'm not sure

that the, uh, sandcastle circuit

is in my future...

but it's been so nice here,

letting go, and...

living in the moment,

as you like to call it.

Yeah.

You know, I used to think

I was doing that,

and then I met you.

What do you mean?

You know, sometimes you think

something is fine,

and then you meet someone,

you connect with them,

and then you realize, wow,

no,

now I'm fine.

This is everything

I've ever wanted.

Do you... know what I mean?

Adam...

You know what, you don't

have to say anything.

It's complicated.

We've only known each other

for a week...

No, it-it really... isn't.

I feel the same way too.

Thanks to you,

I have learned more about myself

in less than a week

than I have with people

I've known my whole life.

Yeah...

same.

Ah, Adam!

Hey, Mayor.

Stan Findlay

has a client from Missoula

who's looking for

a vacation home.

He asked me to find out

if you'd field an offer now.

Yeah.

Yeah, have him, uh, send it in,

and I'll consider it.

Okay.

Hey, Lils.

Hey.

Oh...

You seem really happy here,

happier than I've seen you

in a really long time.

Yeah.

You do too.

I don't think my friends

are really my friends.

Did something happen tonight?

No, not here.

Becca and Amy

have been hanging out

with Becca's friends from camp,

and-and doing all the things

that we had planned,

and we don't even like

the same things,

and I try so hard

for them to accept me, but...

but I don't

have to pretend here.

You know what, honey?

Sometimes when we...

we find something real,

it shines a really bright light

on what we've been missing.

- Come here.

- I love you.

I love you so much.

Hi, Marley.

I'm not sure

what's going on with you,

but I have been

trying to reach you

since this morning.

It's really not like you

to not answer your phone,

so please call me

and tell me what's going on.

You know, I like

everyone's ideas,

but, uh, we've got to decide,

like, now, you guys,

because we gotta be there

in an hour.

- I like Atlantis.

- Okay.

It's a cool design.

Yes, but what

does it mean to us?

I mean, you said

that the judges want a story.

Yeah.

Okay, so, how about...

the pyramids of Giza?

They're buried with everything

that they ever had,

and they hold on so tightly

to this world,

but it's all left behind.

They can't take it with them,

so holding on to the past,

it doesn't always serve us.

By memorializing this landmark,

we can learn from it.

And we will.

I like it.

- Yeah? Okay, good!

- Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Hey, knock, knock.

Door was open.

Hey, you're here!

Oh, hey!

Oh, we wouldn't miss

your big day.

Your dad insisted on getting up

at the crack of dawn.

- Hello.

- Hi.

Adam, Paige, this is my dad

and stepmom, Beth.

- Nice to meet you.

- Pleasure. Hey.

- Nice to meet you.

- Hi. Nice to meet you.

Uh, I don't know

what's going on,

but Joan called me,

since I'm still

your emergency contact,

and she said

you have gone radio silent,

and she is...

completely losing her mind.

I will call her.

I, uh, I just...

I have some decisions to make.

Huh. Do tell.

I will, later.

Uh, first, we are gonna

watch our daughter,

and our team,

build the pyramids of Giza.

- Oh!

- That's ambitious, Lils.

Eh, we've got it.

- Yeah, we do.

- Yes, we do.

- Yeah!

- Yes!

Oh, we're doing that now, okay.

Do you guys want some breakfast?

Mayor Finch?

Mayor Finch, can I

talk to you for a second?

Yeah.

Um, I'd like you

to tell Stan Findlay

that we're gonna counter

on his offer, okay?

Yeah, but I think

we'll get there.

All right?

I appreciate you.

Sandcastlers!

Welcome to day one

of the finals.

At the sound of the bell,

you will have eight hours

before shovels go down,

and another eight hours tomorrow

to complete your sculptures.

Good luck, everyone!

All right, team!

Come on, let's get

the bottom form in place

so we can start

the pound up, shall we?

You got the top?

Yeah, we'll get the second one.

Careful, careful.

And let's go.

Ah, good job.

Guys, it looks great.

Good job, Lils.

Thank you.

I still have no idea

how you guys got it this solid.

Beth and I kept on

trying ourselves,

and it kept on collapsing.

That happened to me at first,

but it's a process.

I'll teach you.

Let's go.

Yeah, let's go!

Ooh, I'm coming to see this.

Check it out.

I'm coming too.

He seems like a great dad.

He is.

Not too bright, though.

He's actually

extremely intelligent.

Hmm, maybe.

I can't believe he let you go.

Well, we let each other go.

His loss.

Hi, Joan.

Marley, they're perfect.

I suppose I can forgive you

for your radio silence.

You were just focusing.

I am glad that you're happy.

I would...

I would never want

to leave you or a client

high and dry,

but this will be my last project

for Cooper & Quan.

Don't tease me like that.

We have so much in the pipeline.

I'm not teasing.

I'm sorry, I just...

I really want to go back

to residential design.

Where?

Maybe for myself?

I don't know yet.

Do you know how hard it is

to start your own firm?

It won't leave you a lot of time

for the rest of your life.

Trust me, Marley, I've done it.

And look how successful you are,

and that's because

you took a gamble on yourself.

Too true.

I'll see you in the office

on Monday?

Yes.

Um, I'll give you...

another month or so

to tie up any loose ends.

Thanks, Marley. Bye.

Bye.

Mom...

I can get a job, Mom.

I'll pay for Paris.

Emmy was able to get

a job at Froyo Frenzies.

I can work at Froyo Frenzies.

Oh... sweetheart,

you do not

have to get a job, okay?

We will be fine.

We will be more than fine.

I appreciate the thought.

And we will get to Paris.

Okay?

Aw...

Good morning.

Morning.

So...

you ready for today, or what?

I am as ready

as I'm ever gonna be.

Listen, Adam, win or lose,

I just...

This...

This has been a week

I'll never forget,

and I want to thank you

for bringing me and my daughter

back to each other.

It was an honor.

And I... quit my job

this morning.

What?

- Yes.

- You did?

Oh... that is a risk

that is gonna pay off, Marley.

I am so excited for you.

That's great.

I have you

to thank for that, too.

Nah, come on, I just pulled you

out of your comfort zone.

Have I done that for you too?

Very much so.

In fact, I...

accepted an offer

on the house this morning.

Yeah, it's a good one, too.

Four weeks escrow,

so, yeah, I'm, uh,

I'm finally

closing that chapter.

And I hope that

only good things await you

on the next one.

Okay, why am I feeling

like this is, uh, goodbye?

Can't be goodbye.

I mean, we have

our final round in an hour.

But it's heading

in that direction, isn't it?

Adam, you know, in...

in another universe,

you know, when...

when you don't live

five hours away from me,

and have an established

business, and...

my life is less complicated...

What if, what if, right?

It's the most futile sentence

in the English language.

Isn't it, though?

Okay, I'm... gonna shower,

because we've got

a competition to win, right?

Yeah.

Looks pretty good.

Yeah.

All right, you guys,

we obviously have

the tip of the pyramid set.

Uh, we've got to make sure

that everything's even, okay?

All right, team in, let's go.

On "three."

Three, two, one,

Last One Sanding!

All right, let's do it.

No!

Oh, no!

That's the two-hour mark!

I'm so sorry. I just...

It's okay, it's okay.

I was distracted,

and I guess I didn't

pack the sand enough.

Tough breaks, Adam.

Thanks, Gordo.

It's okay, Mom.

It's just a sand contest.

I know.

You know what? I know.

You're... you're right, honey,

and I am so proud

of how far you've come

with all this.

I am going to...

take a minute

and regroup.

It's not over

until it's over, all right?

I mean it.

Take all the time you need.

Thank you.

- Bye.

- Bye, Mom.

I'll be right back, okay?

Oh, of course, yes,

go talk to her.

All right, let's, um,

let's get this to the, uh...

Let's just

fill this up with sand.

- Hey.

- Hey.

Heck of a day, right?

You don't know the half of it.

Lily told me you quit your job,

or is it about Adam?

I'm not talking to my ex-husband

about a guy that I just met.

Well, I'm not just

your ex-husband,

I'm also your friend,

and for a long time,

I was your partner,

and you were mine.

You're still my partner

in the company.

Your 25%

is gonna be worth a lot now

with this Singapore deal,

which is why...

I want to buy you out.

No, no, no, p-partially.

Mar, you have worked for years

looking after this family

while I built this business,

and I know

we're not married anymore,

but this is a chance for me

to give back

what you gave to me.

If I buy out

half your stake now,

you will have the money

and the time

to open up your own shop.

Really?

You deserve it.

I mean, my company

wouldn't exist without you,

and now it is your turn

to follow your heart,

wherever it leads you.

Thank you, Dan.

Mom?

Hey, Lils.

These are, um, happy tears.

It's okay.

I'll see you two up there.

Yeah. Okay.

Are you sure you're okay?

Yes, I...

am amazing.

Good,

because Adam has a plan

on how to fix the pyramid,

but we need all hands on deck,

so I'm gonna need you

to dust yourself off

and get back up there,

because in this family,

we are not quitters.

No, we are not.

Mm-hmm.

Mm-hmm.

I love you, Mom.

I love you.

Are you ready?

Let's go get 'em. Yeah.

All right, we are gonna take

this grand pyramid of Giza,

and we're gonna make it

a lot less grand, okay?

All right, follow me.

We're gonna put a smaller

pyramid of Giza

on the inside of the broken one,

shave around it,

and then let the smaller

pyramid of Giza pop out.

You understand what I'm saying?

- Not really.

- Mm-mm.

That's a great idea.

Thank you.

But we only have an hour,

so I don't know

if that's enough time

to do all the stone details.

It's enough time if we hustle.

It's enough time.

Okay, I guess if

we all take a side.

- Yeah.

- Yeah, we can.

Yes, we can.

We are Last One Sanding!

Yeah, we are!

Hands in! On "three"!

And let me hear you this time!

One, two, three!

Last One Sanding!

Let's go, let's go, let's go.

Hey, folks.

Gordo Peck, coming to you live.

Now, I know

this is anyone's game,

but good old Gordo's got 13

of these trophies on my mantel,

and hopefully today,

we're gonna get lucky number 14.

And that's time!

Tools down, everyone!

Tools down!

It's in the judges' hands now.

Looks good, guys. It looks good.

- Yes.

- Good job, Paigey.

- Good job.

- Good job.

That was a great idea.

In second place,

it's "Kings of the Castle"!

And finally, in first place,

for a whopping $5,000,

it goes to...

students from our very own

Cannon Cove High,

Team "Sand and Deliver"!

Hey!

Congratulations!

Whoo!

And now for

the Honorable Mention Award.

This one goes to the team

with the most heart

and perseverance.

This year the decision

was unanimous.

For pulling it together

when all seemed lost...

"Last One Sanding"!

Hey, all right!

You were wonderful.

Thank you.

Everyone say "Sandy"!

Sandy!

Hey.

- Hey.

- Um...

we're going to go

and have a celebration dinner

at our house.

Um... you should come.

I think, Marley,

it's best if we just call it now

instead of prolonging

the inevitable goodbye, right?

Yeah, I get it.

I wish you happiness, Adam.

You deserve it.

So do you.

- I'm gonna go.

- Yeah, have a good dinner.

Let's get back to the house.

Hey, Mar, Lily just texted,

said she needs you

out in the deck.

What?

She's supposed to be

with Paige and her friends.

I don't know,

I'm just the messenger here.

Hmm, okay, I'll be right back.

Mm-hmm.

What are you doing?

I thought we already...

I know, I know, so did I,

but...

I had a very interesting

conversation with Dan.

Is that right?

Mm-hmm.

He said to me

he has a lot of connections

in Seattle for me.

He also said

that people always ask him

for referrals, so...

Yeah, well, that's true.

A good contractor's

hard to find.

And, well, since I only have

a few more weeks with my house,

I guess I'm a free agent here.

I can go anywhere I want,

do whatever I want...

Marley,

what I'm trying to say is...

we can create the future

that we want,

and I want that future

to be with you.

I really want that too.

Good.

I'm glad you said yes to that.

Wherever it takes us.

We're in it together.

You look so beautiful.
