I mean, I am the baddest m*dget

- Here.

[upbeat music]

- Hey, guys, pull it forward!

- [Thom] Removing a motor is one thing,

getting a 454 Chevy big-block

to fit inside a Ford is another.

- Oil pan clearance on the motor.

- On the big-block.

- On the big-block. A Ford is a rear steer.

The steering linkage is in the back.

And a Chevy's oil pump

and oil pan has the sump in the rear,

where a Ford has the sump in the front.

So as you could see, it's all open here.

So there's no clearance problem with anything.

When you put a Chevy motor in a Ford,

it hits all that steering.

So that's the problem.

- We should have our engine tomorrow.

- Yeah, it should be in tomorrow.

Feels like a blast. - The motor may

or may not work out,

but that's been the gamble from the very beginning.

[grinder whizzing]

[tape rattling]

The very first monster, the Switchblade,

holds a special place in the hearts of fans

and in the hearts of the show producer, Hugh King,

and creator and executive producer, me, Thom Beers.

So here it is, it's number one,

"Monster Garage" number one,

the Mustang Lawnmower.

- I think that when this one actually worked,

I knew it was gonna go.

- We're gonna take something

that's pretty non-threatening, generally accepted,

and make it something that's gonna scare people.

- [Thom] Jesse and the builders were working blind,

but the beast they built carried the seats

for many generations of monster spawn.

- We had this kind of this feeling

that you had to respect the vehicle.

So we're cutting and being very careful,

and then Jesse comes in,

and the doors weren't opening enough,

and he just basically ripped the door right back,

thinking, "Oh my God, this is gonna look terrible."

- Right now, it's straight. - Is that 90?

- That's a 90. - Then I realized that

that's really what this is about.

It actually kinda set the tone

a little bit for the whole show.

and now, we get to work side by side.

I got the best job in the whole world.

- [Thom] And this insane '54

takes some of those classic lines

and pushes them one step further.

- We kind of married the two eras together,

and I think that's what "Monster Garage" has done too,

is do a lot of unusual things, old and new.

So we're accomplishing both

right here on this one vehicle.

- [Thom] These old-school dudes agree that

"Monster Garage" not only radically altered machines,

and the courage, and a few tools.

we don't keep our failures around "Monster Garage."

If we're gonna fail, we gotta get rid of this thing

'cause it's a disgusting reminder of our inadequacy.

with this stupid car that didn't work.

And we get to Terminal Island,

we're making our way through these piles

of post-apocalyptic refuse.

we threw a full propane tank

into the hearse to get shredded too

- So the car goes up on the conveyor belt,

Yeah, it looks really good.

- Congratulations, it's a hell of a build.

You guys gonna be taking with you tonight an ESAB welder

and a plasma cutter, big tool package from Milwaukee

and a crawler from Bone.

You're also taking with you one other thing,

the knowledge that the fact that you guys are the last ones

to ever pull a car out of the garage.

So. - It's an honor, man.

- [Gene] I'm very happy to be a part of that build,

very happy. - Thank you.

- Thank you. - Well,

I'm really proud of y'all

and as far as I'm concerned,

this is one of the sweetest builds

to ever come out of the garage.

So congratulations to all you guys.

- That's it, bye, guys.

- Finally got things fitted enough to where I can paint it.

So now, I gotta come back and reblend this.

So now, I'm gonna reblend, back up, touching here.

- This show right here, I've gone through 40,000 cars,

picking a variety of cars.

I mean, you could see every kind of variety there is here.

It isn't just all '32s, or all '57 Chevys, or all pickups.

It's a variety of everything.

You could see the best of the best out

of every show from Detroit to San Diego.

I don't believe, I watch the show all the time,

But now, it's time to let you

in on a little secret, folks, [siren blaring]

which most of you already know.

The show ain't really about the monsters.

No, it's about the builders!

[saw whizzing]

- It has nothing to do with a college degree,

a doctoral degree.

It has to do with belief in themselves.

- Oh yeah. - Oh yeah.

- And just pure basic skill in building something.

- And we should be fine.

- I think they view fabricators

not so much as Neanderthals and greasy knuckles.

You know, it's more of a, I think, respected field now.

It's nice to be respected.

- Nothing. - Yeah.

- If you ask me what I'm more proud

of than anything on a show like this,

it's the fact that time and again,

I run into men and women who are mechanics

or fabricators who come up to me

and say, "I wanna thank you for making my job

and my life cool to my children."

[saw whizzing]

[hopeful music continues]

[torch sizzling]

- This is a lost art, and it's a beautiful thing.

We validated that.

And I think that's important. [skeleton laughing]

- It opened up the eyes of a lot of younger people

to the idea that they might be able

to fabricate something completely different

rather than just sit at a computer or watch television.

[water splashing]

- I think "Monster Garage" definitely

has inspired a lot of people to do wild things.
