has a British Ford made the team go hoity toity?

Not really!

- [Narrator] This week's challenge,

Take a mid-1959 Ford Anglia, hack it apart,

and send it back in time

as a slammed nitro burning nostalgia dragster!

[engine revving]

[clinks]

The rules: The car must appear to be old school,

and the team can spend

no more than 5,000 buckaroos on parts.

Jesse and his fellow mechanics have seven days and nights.

On the first day, they design,

for the next five, they build,

and on the seventh day, he burns!

If successful, the team walks away with a $4,000 set

of Max hottest tools,

and they'll each get a 28 volt lithium ion combo kit

from Milwaukee Electric Tools!

And the clock starts now!

[upbeat music]

Jesse's gonna take us on a ride through drag racing history,

and it all starts with the unlikely Anglia.

The 1950s and sixties were the gasser years,

and the blacktop was blazing

with British made Ford Anglia dragsters.

The early drag racers were attracted

to the Anglia's sexy curves,

light body, and narrow wheel base,

and the hot little Fords dominated the quarter mile.

When powerful nitromethane fuel arrived on the scene,

the Anglia was among the first

to join the fuel altered classes.

But as they upped the ratio

of expl*sive nitro in the engines,

the short, curvy Anglia became too hard to handle.

And within a few years was phased out of the pro classes.

[engine roaring]

Too hard to handle?

That's for Jesse to decide

when he fuels up this monsterized Anglia

as a tribute to our fuel altered forefathers.

[Jesse laughs]

[soft music]

[upbeat music]

This design team has the street cred

to create a monster street rod.

Racetrack legend Roland Leong

is a member of the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame,

and has run top fuel dragsters

and funny cars for over 30 years.

Rudy Ram McCarran is a graduate of the Pasadena Art Center,

and is also a skilled fabricator.

And Brett Hankins is no stranger to the Monster Garage.

He's a veteran of the Quarter-Mile Cadi build

and runs his own custom top fuel race car,

"The Blue Blazer."

- There he is.

- Jesse. - How you doing?

- Jesse? - What's up man?

- What's happening?

- What's up man?

Did you get any tattoos?

- Yeah, freshy.

- So fuel altered, you know.

I think the show we're kind of escalating things

and trying to make stuff that's wilder

and wilder and wilder,

and stuff that those other p*ssy shows won't do.

[Jesse chuckles]

You know, and I think no one would ever mess with fuel,

you know, because it's tricky.

It's like instant horsepower.

Just pour it in. [Brett laughs]

- [Narrator] Packing nitro power into a car

with such a short wheel base

will turn this proper British machine into a buckin Bronco.

- I mean,

if you run an eight or nine second pass in that thing

as short as it is, it's gonna be a wild ride.

- So what's the wheel base on this part right now?

- It's probably 85 or 90.

- [Brett] Yeah.

- Maybe a little more.

- What'd you think about making it 125, Jesse?

- Well, let's look at it.

Let's do what looks the coolest.

- [Brett] Yeah.

- I can drive it though, if it's hard to drive.

- [Brett] Oh yeah. - It'll be fun.

- [Brett] It's, its... - I have a Topolino.

It's a 90 inch wheel base, so...

- [Brett] Wow, cool.

- If we don't have a fuel engine.

- No. [everyone chuckles]

- [Brett] No, that's...

- I think building a car

like it would be built in the sixties.

You know, leave as much of the stock stuff as we can on it.

- [Brett] Right.

- So I think we gut it, make it safe.

We'll have to do a funny car style roll cage.

- [Brett] Right?

- And then motor and trans solid mounted rear end.

- Yeah, as long as we can get a decent transmission in it,

that's my main concern.

- I think the best thing about this

is we could totally start from scratch

and get a fiberglass Anglia body.

- [Brett] Yeah, we could.

- And all that stuff, but... - [Brett] Yep.

- We wouldn't have the opportunity

to cut up something so cherry

if we did it that way.

- [Brett] Cut up something nice.

[Brett laughs]

- [Narrator] But Jesse's got another reason

for wanting to rack up time behind a top fuel wheel.

He sponsors a nitro dragster

for NHRA legend Connie "The Bounty Hunter," Kalitta.

And that has planted a seed.

- Connie expressed me to get my license and race next year.

- [Roland] Oh really? - Yeah.

- [Brett] Awesome. - I think I'm gonna try.

- [Roland] Really? - [Brett] Awesome.

- [Roland] What does your wife say about that though?

- I haven't told her yet, man.

- I see. [everyone laughs]

[upbeat music]

- [Narrator] The team gets the green light.

They'll take a super cherry 1959 Ford Anglia, gut it,

and pipe together a roll cage.

Swap out the rear end, slap on some racing slicks,

and bring her down to Earth.

Finally, they'll drop in a beefed up engine,

load her up with nitromethane,

and they're ready to burn some blacktop!

[Jesse burps]

[upbeat music]

- Jesse. - Hi.

- How you doing?

- [Narrator] The team rolls in and Jesse lays out the plan.

Hands off the mint stock body.

- I think taking that stock looking Anglia,

and you know, putting it right on the ground

and huge tires in the back and putting a nitro motor

and just cruising it around and making people trip out,

that's cool enough for me.

[Roland laughs]

- [Narrator] Jesse's original idea was to take this car

and load it up with this type

of custom built nitro power plant.

But everybody knows, those engines don't come cheap.

- Unless you want to use your resources

and we'll get one of them Collette motors

and over here we could make some noise at one of them.

- I don't think 75 grand is in the budget.

- [Roland] I see, I see.

- I think that exceeds that's 70 over.

[everyone chuckles]

What percentage can we run on a gas motor?

You run 20 or 30%, can't you?

- Probably.

Depends on compression.

- Who cares what it really runs in the quarter mile

and how safe it is, I'll drive it,

and if it blows up and blows the rods out of it, oh well.

- [Narrator] This monster won't be made for the drag strip.

It'll be built just to show off.

But even 30% nitro at street speeds is playing with fire.

- You know, if you lean it out

and you pump a big charge of it in the cylinder,

it's like a b*mb.

- Nitro is an expl*sive.

- But it's that gas though, you know,

if there's a puddle of it on the floor

and you throw a match in it, it won't light.

- It won't light.

You hit a hammer to it though.

- [Jesse] Yeah.

- It'll blow a hole in the ground.

- Boom.

- [Narrator] The secret behind speed is air.

Like blowing on a campfire,

the more oxygen, the bigger the blast.

It's cold air to fuel ratio.

And in a gas engine, you need 12 and a half pounds of air

for every pound of gas.

But nitromethane is an oxygen bearing fuel,

which means the air is built right in.

So it needs only one and a half pounds of air

per pound of nitro.

That means,

you can pump eight times more fuel into the engine

and triple your horsepower.

[tire squealing]

[upbeat music]

[car parts banging]

- I wonder if that's a factory color.

'cause he looks like some curtains

or something out of his 1940 home.

- Him, help him out, would you?

[chuckles] - Yeah,

there's Roland over there, "Help me out would you?"

Roland's used to sitting around making decisions.

- Hawaiians don't get dirty.

- [Narrator] Roland Leon

is a certifiable drag racing legend.

And for the flying Hawaiian, it all came naturally.

He won major national titles

as soon as he got behind the wheel.

- I think I just turned 21,

you know, couldn't even drink up to that time.

And went on the road, traveled all over the country.

- [Narrator] But years of sponsorship

and pro cruise makes this project a serious change

of pace for Rowland.

- To me, there's only one way to do it

and that's the best way, compromising here

is a good learning experience for myself.

- [Narrator] The team rips out the puny four cylinder

heart of the beast.

- That's about as small as you can get.

Look at that thing.

- They ain't no bigger than that dude.

- Pretty simple too, yeah.

- [Narrator] Then sparks the plasma to carve room

for a massive power plant and thick racing wheels.

[metal crackling]

[car parts clatters]

[metal thuds]

[Meloichi chuckles]

They slide in a temp slick,

taken off the monsters hotdog cart to get the big picture.

- Thing's gonna look badass, man.

- [Narrator] Just in time to check it out,

the man himself cruises in with a frame,

front wheels and a bird catcher.

- I got this.

- I got this.

- [Narrator] With all this space for a big block,

it's easy to see why the Anglia

was a primo dragster prototype.

This kind of build makes

Jesse appreciate old school even more.

- Huh?

Now I know why.

Those old dudes were smart.

which won't be really a problem.

If it was a daily driver, it'd be pretty uncomfortable.

But it's not gonna be, so.

- [Narrator] Tim Colungeon got his start

when his mechanic dad saw an ad

for a drag street motorcycle.

- And we went racing.

Now, here I'm 15 or 16 years old,

and I'm racing down a quarter mile going 150 miles an hour

and we're winning races.

And I'm like, "Man, this is great."

- [Narrator] Not long after, he met Steve Johnson

and has become the engine expert on Steve's Pro Stock bikes.

- [Tim] It's fun being in the shop but I mean...

- [Narrator] But Tim still dreams

of getting back in the saddle.

- Yeah, I'd like to be back on a bike.

and checks out the massive monster makeover.

- Good morning, brother.

- Looks so bitching with them little wheels on the front.

- They're cool, huh?

- Isn't that a truth that every dragster that runs

in an HRA runs Anglia spindled wheels

that will bolt right on this car.

- Yeah.

Yeah, yeah.

It all started right here.

- Yep.

Hey, there's a, in the new issue, a road and track,

I saw this morning there's a Anglia for sale.

- Huh?

- And it said, this is probably the last one known to exist.

[Tim chuckles]

Which I thought for a second, I was like,

"[glass clinks] oh wait, maybe it is now."

- [Narrator] For this monster to fly and stop,

they've gotta have a stout differential,

and Tim knows there's nothing more exciting

than our rock solid rear end.

[Tim shout excitingly]

- See we're gonna lop this joker off right here

and we're gonna swell these batches on right there.

- [Narrator] They're gonna have to lop it way off

if it's going to fit inside the narrow Anglia

with the slicks attached.

The number's gotta be right on, so Brett takes charge.

- We basically just need to get it

where it'll just clear each side.

So say to be safe from here to here.

So here, we got 44 and a half.

- [Narrator] Size does differentiate a differential.

Brett gives the tire a measly one inch gap on each side

and starts hacking.

[rock music]

- To get those two tires way up in there

and get it as low as Jesse wants it,

the tires are gonna end up being, well,

they're gonna be about that far apart.

Hey, it's a Monster Garage car, it'll work.

It's a beast from the garage.

[graphic expl*si*n]

- [Narrator] Back in Sonora, California,

Brett has his own garage beast,

a nostalgia top fuel dragster, The Blue Blazer.

- Where every time we go out

and run the car, we bring it back,

tear the whole thing apart,

and then put it all back together.

And it takes a lot of skill,

and you know, stuff that not a lot of people do.

- [Narrator] Brett's last Monster Garage,

So he feels especially confident this week.

- Comparing it to each of the days from the Cadillac build,

I think we're right on schedule.

until they lock down the rest of the vital parts.

- Until we get the axles and the whole rear put together,

where exactly it's gonna sit.

But until we get some of the parts, you know,

- Well, I know what... - I know we can't use it.

Well you, no, you don't.

- [Roland] It won't fit either?

- Yeah, it'll fit, but it doesn't matter if it fits or not.

It'll fit.

I guarantee you it'll fit.

Now what?

- Maybe we can cheat and take some off of here,

and cheat and take some off of there.

- Well, lemme get a tape measure.

- Right, right.

- No you can't.

Three eighths of an inch.

- I know.

- It's three eighths of an inch.

This is probably only like eight inch steel.

So you can't take three eighths out of an eighth inch.

- Well, if we don't have no wheels to run,

we must well go home now.

- Yeah, we'll come up with some wheels.

- What?

- We'll come up with something.

- [Narrator] But what the heck is wrong with the wheels?

- So he got us the right size wheel,

but because it's a steel wheel, it doesn't fit the,

doesn't clear the calipers.

A steel wheel has this lip right here.

An aluminum rim's gonna be this diameter all the way in.

- Were we specific with the kind of wheel we asked for?

Did we ask for aluminum wheel?

- [Brett] Yeah. - We did,

and we got a steel wheel. - Mm hmm.

We gave him a part number outta Jegs.

- Well, if we gave him a part number,

why did we get that?

- It's all right.

- Well, I can't really 'cause I haven't been.

- Yeah, but you're you man.

[Brett chuckles] - Yeah.

What?

- You got a lighter like this?

[Brett chuckles]

Boom.

- What do you think so far, Jesse?

- I think he looks Bitching.

Just gonna...

[bangs]

- [Schwag] Tim has a pretty good idea

which platoon mate racked him, but keeps his cool.

- [Jesse] He looks good.

How much nitro you thinking?

- Well, what I got it for now,

the injector set up is for like alcohol to about 20%,

- That'll be all right.

- Well, I think that's, my guesstimate would be,

that's more than what the car would handle.

- That's how you know it's enough.

- [Roland] Right. [chuckles]

- 200 mile an hour motor, 40 mile an hour brain.

- Well, no, I didn't say that now.

Is it gonna be right against it?

- Might get closer in the burnout but...

[both chuckles]

- Woo!

Get a little hot.

- Little rug burn.

- [Narrator] Time to marry the trainee to the engine.

But something's in the way.

The bolt that connects the torque converter

to the flex plate is too long.

Off camera, Roland whistles for Tim

to come and cut the bolt.

And Tim is finally tired of being Roland's locky boy.

- Here, you can do it another way if you want to do it.

[metal clatters]

- [beep] you then. - [beep] you.

Whistle at me to call me by my [beep] name.

No, [beep] that.

really, I'm just [beep] around.

But there's some point

where we're [beep] straggling, and [beep] you know...

- Hey, hey, hey.

Hey. - That's just the bottom line.

- What do you mean we're straggling?

We're all straggling.

- I know, we, I said we. - Okay.

- I didn't say I. - Okay.

- I said we.

Careful it's hot.

[screeching]

[metal clinks]

[Meloichi laughs]

- [Narrator] The bolt was cut, and the [indistinct] engine

can finally be dropped into the carved out Anglia.

But maybe she needs a little more carving.

- It has to go back that far.

There's no choice.

- [Narrator] Brett makes another command decision.

[upbeat rock music]

[metal crackling]

- There you go.

Keep going.

- More?

- Hey, hold up, hold up.

It's sitting on the cross member right there.

Okay.

That's looking good.

- Hanging.

- [Roland] Come on.

My baby found a new home.

- [Narrator] By the end of day five,

Tim has pounded the discs off the differential

and beat on the drums.

- But I think that's gonna be okay.

- [Narrator] The jerry rigged rear end is finally ready

to be seated in the old school monster.

- An inch may make us or break us.

Moment of truth.

[metal crackling]

- But.

[wheel thuds]

- I can't zip it on all the way

'cause it's still hitting somewhere.

- [Narrator] You guessed it, there's a problem.

- [Tim] Okay. - [Meloichi] Is this tight?

Is this wheel tight. - [Roland] No.

- [Jesse] Both sides are touching the frame rail right now.

- Right now.

He's saying they're both hitting the frame.

- Now, would they be hitting the frame.

- They don't.

[instrument creaking]

- Oh, you know what?

That drum brake assembly was narrower

than the disc brake assembly.

That's all it is.

So we just gotta put some spacers on it to compensate.

- [Narrator] The diff is too narrow

by two and a half inches.

But the question is, why?

Is it the brakes like Brett says?

- No.

No, that has nothing to do with it.

When you measure up the length of the axles,

you're determining how far apart the tires

are gonna sit from each other.

And there was a mistake made.

- [Narrator] Brett disagrees.

- Because the distance of the brakes is narrower,

that's the reason we're hitting right now.

- No, that's not the reason why.

- Yes, it is the reason why. - No.

- It's the only thing that changed.

- No.

- But the hat, how thick is the hat?

- Less than three eighths of an inch.

- Three eighths or so.

Anyways, whatever.

It's narrower, so. - Right.

- An inch...

- [Tim] It don't matter why...

- An inch on each side...

- We have what we have, - It's gonna save it.

- We have what we have.

- What you gotta do to fix it?

- That's right.

- [Narrator] Day five is over.

They got the engine in and the brake swapped out.

But after all that measuring,

the differential was cut too short.

And now, they're also short on time.

- I'm just looking at this car,

looking at all the things that need to happen,

and it's just like amazing.

- We'll find some spacers, man.

[rock music]

- [Narrator] The old-school nitro team walks out

with only one more day,

and more than one rear end in a sling.

[upbeat music]

- [Schwag] Coming up,

the builders ride the emo coaster of laughter,

[Brett laughs funnily]

and tears.

- [Narrator] Day six.

[rock music]

The Anglia dragster team walks in

to face their final build day.

No amount of beer could solve this problem overnight.

- Still trying to find spacers.

- Or make them.

- You gotta find 'em or make 'em.

- That's our first...

- Uses laid. - Priority.

- [Narrator] Brett still doesn't know

why the rear end came up short.

- It doesn't matter why.

I don't care why.

- We're not working together,

you know, that's something I could have helped with.

And I feel like I could have contributed

with measuring up that rear end.

- You know, we can all stand around

and everybody can blame everybody, you know,

but what does that get anybody?

Nowhere.

- Somehow the measurements got, you know, mixed up anyway,

but, so we don't get the spacers, we're probably screwed.

- [Narrator] Even though the differential isn't in place,

Wade King from Drive Line Inc

is here to measure for the custom drive train.

- Right now they're taking the tires off

'cause they have a clearance problem to get the diff up

into where it can be in line for the drive line.

[fast beat music]

- [Narrator] All they can do is eyeball it

and hope for the best.

- You gonna lift it up or you want me?

- No, just push.

- Leave it where it is.

- Yeah, right.

[fast beat music]

[upbeat rock music]

- [Narrator] Jesse makes it into the garage early.

Brett hopes it's early enough to save the day.

- We need some spacers bad.

So spring the wheels out or in?

- Out.

- Oh, now it's too narrow?

- Well yeah, the hat on the disc brakes

are thicker than the drums.

And then the seat,

because it sticks out past the frame rail a little bit.

- How much of a spacer do you need?

- Inch and a quarter.

- [Jesse] Wow! - Inch and a quarter.

- Both sides? - Yep.

One for each side.

- We can't use different wheels, even the ones off my car.

- If they're the ride offset.

- Do you want to go look real quick?

- Yeah. - Okay.

[upbeat music]

- [Narrator] Over at West Coast Choppers,

Brett checks out the wheels on Jesse's dragster.

- He look bigger.

- No.

No, these are way, there's no back spacing on these.

- [Narrator] The offset's wrong on the race car,

but Jesse's got his own private stash of spacers.

- Yeah. - Yeah.

- [Narrator] Back in the shop, Brett shows off the goods.

- Wow!

About as long as your [silent].

- Hey!

Fits.

- [Narrator] Jesse made it happen.

Now they can try to seat the rear end one more time.

- Okay, hold up right there.

- Why'd you make it so narrow?

- I don't know.

Smidge.

- Have you ever built a race car before

or you just raced him?

He probably bought his raced car.

[wheel rattles]

- Come on man!

[indistinct]

- I'm not pulling any more parts off my race car

to bail you out Brett.

- Look at that, it clears.

- Clears What?

The seat doesn't fit this car.

- [Brett] Oh, I got a seat.

- [Jesse] Hey, you got any more excuse? [chuckles]

- [Narrator] The tires fit,

but now there's no room for the seat.

- It's too wide.

So we'll just have to, I guess, just make something.

- Okay.

- [Narrator] A seat part can be cut to fit,

but some parts have no jiggle room.

- All right.

- [Schwag] Like this custom drive line.

all we've got left now is a throttle pedal.

Cheyenne's doing the shifter, put the mag in it and fuel.

Mel thinks the manifold has been machined wrong

so the mag gears aren't turning fast enough

to light the motor.

- I think what happened is,

you know when the machine, this hole in here?

- Yeah.

Oh, the counter board.

- The counter board.

There's the step on the manifolds off, so.

- Yeah, we should have checked that when we got it.

- Yeah.

- Yeah, let's put that jump box on it see if it'll...

Cheyenne goes for the jump box

in case the magneto's too slow,

while Roland and Tim change out the plugs.

- How positive are we, the timings?

- The timing's pretty damn cool.

So it should kick over.

- It should.

Okay. - Hey, Col.

They put in the less spark plug in try to turn her over.

- [Brett] Okay, done.

- [Roland] Okay.

- [Tim] Spin it on.

- [Brian] Switch off. - Okay.

- I think the timing's off.

and we'll never know the real reason why.

That fact will be blown away
