This week's challenge:
turn this classic 1974 Datsun Honeybee
into a stealth drift car by borrowing parts
off this brand new Nissan 350Z.
Drifting originated in Japan 15 years ago -
high powered cars that slide sideways through corners
at high speeds.
[tires squealing] [rock music continues]
[engine revving]
The rules: the Monster must appear to be stock.
The team will get 5,000 bucks for parts.
[cha-ching sound]
They'll have seven days and nights.
The first day they design,
for the next five they build,
and on the seventh day they drift.
[voice echoing]
If successful, each builder
gets a $4,000 box of Mac tools
and the clock starts now. [clock ticking]

[start chime sounds] [dramatic music begins]
Jesse is still recovering from his NASCAR crash,
so no cool drive-in this week.
The design team is ready for this sweet conversion.
Drift car expert and race announcer, Toshi Hayama.
Nauto Nigishi builds high performance engines
for blast racing.
Mario Lozano is a Nissan specialist
and drift car fabricator.
Artist Robin Scott Hoot designs cars for motion pictures.
[dramatic rock music fades]
- So you don't think doing a honeybee into
a drift car is a good idea?
- That's not the first car I would've thought of.
[laughing]
- See, that's the thing. That's the point.
That's what Monster Garage is,
is take the thing that everybody thinks is opposite.
Because you know, drifting's pretty popular
and every, when you think of a drift car,
what do you think of?
You think of like a Skyline or something bitchin'
with wings - Wings, right.
- [Jesse] and scoops and big logos and everything like that.
No one would ever think Honeybee.
- [Toshi] Yeah, true.
- [Narrator 2] Jesse's been stung by the Honeybee bug.
He just bought one for himself.
[tires squealing]
- Out of almost all my cars, except for my 54,
[laughter]
That's probably my one of my favorites
and it took me 10 years to find a cherry one.
I just like it for the simple fact is like, you know,
people, like fans,
"Yeah, what does Jesse James drive?" You know?
He's got a Camaro or a Roadrunner, or a,
like that. [laughter]
No, beep beep. He's got a honeybee.
[group laughing]
It's got little bees on it. [group laughing]
[tires squealing]
How does it go? Two cars leave the track at the same time
and you try to mirror the image of the other one?
- Yeah, that's, that's - and going around
and you're just basically like a three quarter or more lock,
drifting around the corner, you're like sideways?
- Yeah. Usually the driver will go into a corner
and then he'll kick the clutch
and the rear end will come out.
- [Jesse] Yeah, just pop there.
- [Toshi] Yeah. Pop it,
and then it's how close you can get
from outside to the inside of the outside corner.
- If you've got enough horsepower,
you don't have to kick the clutch, you just...
- That's true. You just smash it and it goes.
[tires squealing]
- [Jesse] Can you tap them?
- [Toshi] Yeah.
- [Jesse] And spin 'em out?
- Uh, well most people don't, but I guess you could.
I guess, it happens, so.
- Boom! - It happens, but yeah.
- I win.
It's kinda like drifting's kind of like
break dancing with cars.
- [Toshi] Yeah, it is. It's like figure skating.
- Yeah. Figure skating is there, I mean,
- [Toshi] Yeah.
- What's, on the straightaway,
how fast do they go like at Irwindale?
- When we have
- [Mario] in front of the stands,
- ...our team drivers, they go about 80 to 90. Usually.
- [Mario] Sideways.
- [Toshi] Sideways on the straightaway.
- [Mario] Exactly. - [Toshi] And at Irwindale.
- [Mario] So limited slips
and spinning the back tires and smoking everything.
- Some of the stuff that we're gonna be looking for
out of this honeybee is gonna be what, one...
- Well, I think motor, definitely motor, trans,
differ- rear end, brakes, you know.
- [Toshi] Yeah.
- Swap, everything non cosmetic
we should swap out.
We got a 350Z that we're gonna scab
all the running gear off of.
- [Mario] That's radical.
- The only thing we, [Mario speaking softly]
only thing where it is up in the air is wheels.
- Yeah. You're gonna have to change
the wheels and tires I think.
- But I think it with the tiny little,
[group laughing] you know,
- Well if you're gonna drive it,
if you're gonna drive - because that'll give it,
that'll give that.
That'll give it away right away.
When people see it
- Yeah. - with some big eighteens
or something like that on,
- Yeah - then they're like, hmm.
They did something to that Honeybee.
But if we keep it real quiet and just do all internal mods
and show up, no one's gonna even think anything.
I think everything else is straightforward.
We're just - [Toshi] Yeah
- figure out the rear end.
- Sounds good.
[percussive music] - [Narrator 2] To transform
this timid Honeybee
into a powerful drift car, the motor and transmission
will be swapped out with the engine and tr*nny
from a brand new Nissan 350Z.
A computer will be wired into the motor,
giving the car a new brain.
To help with the power slides,
the honeybee's suspension system will be beefed up
and a roll cage will reinforce the entire car.
[rock music playing] [marker squeaking]
[tires squealing]

It's day two
and the build team drifts into the garage.
[shuffling sound]

Englishman Frank Brown is the lead mechanic
for Rhys Millen Racing.

the queen bee fabricator, Chrissy Beavis

and staying on from the design to wire in the Honeybee,
Nauto Nigishi, originally from Japan
[shuffling sound]
and a fabricating dancing fool from Carson, California:

- I'm Jesse, what's your name?
- Frank.
- Hey, how you doing man?
- Good. [guitar riff]
- All right. [steady music]
We're gonna do a drift car out of a Honeybee.
We're gonna put that 350Z motor, trans in it
and then kind of upgrade the suspension and all that stuff.
Roll cage.
I wanna keep it looking just like a Honeybee.
If we can get some wide tires but keep those wheels
and the, find some of the stock honeycomb hub caps
and do wide like stock wheels,
that way no one's like kind of tipped off
to what we got going on.
They just think it's just a stock honeybee lowered.
He says he can make all the electronic stuff work, so.
- [Mario] Well, you're very confident.
- Yeah, since we're gonna gut that Z,
let's measure the track width on the back
and see what it is, you know,
because we, if we're gonna do all the electronics
and all the brain and everything,
we might as well do all the suspension
and everything in back also
and have a whole Honeybee that's a 350Z.
All right guys.
- Sounds good. Excellente. [clapping sound]

to see if it'll fit on the Honeybee.

- [Chrissy] Where are you?
- [Jeremy] 63 is right. Way out.
- [Chrissy] How many inches out from the top?
- Well you know what we can do is we can take
all the suspension off that.
I mean we're, we know we're gonna have to change
the rear end and suspension anyway.
- [Jeremy] Yeah.
- So we pull all the stuff off of that.
- So if it comes up, let's have it on the list
and then that way like what? What?
- You're ready to work man, in that case.
- BMWs, that's it.
And then that way, yeah, everything's on a list
and then tonight-

start stripping the perfectly new sports car,

start to take out the Honeybee engine.

- It's so sad. We're just ripping all this stuff out
because you know there's someone somewhere that's,
that really needs these parts.
- Hey you gotta chuck that. [rock music continues]
[parts clattering] [rock music playing]
- I got about five good personalities, good ones.
[funky music]
- [Narrator 2] When Mario Lozano
is not getting his groove on,
he puts his energy into his shop, TSR Fabrication,
where he's also a motivational speaker.
- You can't soar like an eagle
if you're flying with turkeys. Think of that.
- [Narrator 2] Mario is one of those rare
Datsun enthusiasts.
- I got a super fun Datsun 510 and it's,
everything you could do to a Datsun
kind of has been done to this.
All the piping here was fabricated by me.
The cross member, the tr*nny mount,
it was all fabricated to fit in this car.
Hey, who's gonna dance for you? Me.

- [Narrator 2] In no time at all, the Honeybee engine is out
- [Frank] Forward.
- [Narrator 2] and the 350Z
has been stripped of its dignity.

- What would you rather have a 350Z,
or a Honeybee with a 350Z drive train?
- I think I'd rather have a Honeybee
with a 350Z drive train.
- Yeah, it's way cooler.
Anybody with two co-signers can have a 350Z.

- [Narrator 2] The honeybee takes the spotlight again
so the builders can get rid of its wimpy rear suspension
to replace it with the 350Z's beefier system.
[rock music] [metal clattering]
- Hopefully we won't have to put it back in again,
but we might.

- [Narrator 2] Chrissy Beavis is no Butthead.
When she's not fabricating, she's navigating.
- Well I grew up in a racing family.
As soon as I was 16 I hopped in the navigator seat
and I've been navigating and rallying.
As soon as I can afford to get my own car, I'll be driving.
[car crashing] [crowd gasping]
[glass shattering] [metal clattering]
- [Frank] Oh, that's fine.
- [Narrator 2] The Z is positioned to be violated some more.
They're gonna scavenge the rear end off of it.
[metal clattering]
- [Chrissy] It's coming down.
- [Nauto] Ooh, yeah.
- You okay?
- Yeah. I'm all right. I'm all right.
- [Narrator 2] Out with the old, in with the new.
[percussive music begins]
- [Frank] Old technology. New technology.
[percussive music]
It is kind of looking bizarre because of the wheels,
wheels and tires what are on at the moment.
[rock music begins]
- [Narrator 2] At the end of day two,
these builders buzzed away like busy bees.
They're all set to Monsterize their Honeybee tomorrow.
Monster Garage factoid:
In 2004, Automobile magazine named the Datsun Honeybee
one of the uncoolest cars ever.
[electric zapping] ♪ Monster, Monster Garage
It's only day three
and there's already disagreement among the worker bees
on how to proceed.
- Seeing that we're kind of limited on time,
I personally kind of want to eliminate
thinking about the rear end till last.
- No, today's objective is gonna be
to put the engine and tr*nny in
and get, start on this roll cage.
The front suspension doesn't do squat.
The roll cage is gonna take a lot of time
because I've got two people
what haven't done a roll cage in a long time.
- You guys wanna run a small wheel with small rims,
that's fine. But I wanna run big rims
and I wanna run big brakes.
I wanna run 13 inch rotors on a four piston caliper, so.
- What?
- It's a Monster Garage. It's a monster car.
It's crazy to see a car like this with big brakes.
- There's no sense in putting 17 inch wheels in it
if we don't have to
because then the moment this thing shows up
with seventeens on it, it's not a 210 anymore.
He wants this thing to look bad with the hood down.
Fire the thing up. It looks like a 210
but drives like a 350.
- I don't know what they have.
I don't know who he is or where he comes from.
I know he's British, but, you know,
"The British are coming. The British are coming."
[drill whirs]
- [Narrator 2] The team overrules Mario
and picks up where they left off yesterday,
trying to cram the 350Z's big booty
under the small frame of the Honeybee.
- If we cut enough out...
- Looking a little bit
- No, I mean look at the width of it going back there
- It is way out there, right?
- Yeah.
- Leave this thing sitting up here.
When Jesse comes in, he'll look at it and say
no, it ain't gonna work. Done deal.
- [Jeremy] Yeah.
- And in the meantime we can start
putting the engine and tr*nny in.
[swoosh sound] [rock music]
- [Narrator 2] Looks like the Brit has taken command
of this troop.
Frank Brown has worked on race cars for 22 years.
- Best part of my job: five o'clock - going home time.
[Frank laughs]
I can only work with select people, with select people.
People I like working with, I mean they know who they are.
People I can't work with,
it's they just in one ear and out the other.
So no, I don't work great with people.
- [Narrator 2] Chrissy cuts out brackets
under the Honeybee belly
to make room for the bigger Z tr*nny.
[welding iron sparking]
A small fire erupts and Mario tries to put it out
with the floor mat
- [Chrissy] Here, here, here!
- [Narrator 2] and the polyester melts onto his hand.
- [Mario] Ah. Burned my hand.
- [Chrissy] Thanks, it's good.
- [Mario] Oh my- it pulled some of the skin off.
[tool clattering]
Oh, not good. [water dripping]
I gotta do a lot of cutting today too. This is not good.
Alright y'all, I'm gonna have to suffer.
[Mario yelling]
- [Narrator 2] Speaking of suffering, Jesse hobbles in
and checks out his baby's rear end.
- Man.
- [Chrissy] That'll do it. Crazy.
- That'll look pretty stupid.
If you were in like Alabama or something
and a tire stuck way out like that.
- [Frank] Yeah, then that's fine
- Then it'd be cool. - [Frank] Yeah.
- Well we should probably find a junkyard
and measure some track widths before we commit.
- Yeah, the flames were about 8 to 10 inches tall.
- What'd you do that for?
- Huh?
- Why?
- Cause of reaction.
Bam. Do something. You gotta do it now.
- I don't know if this build's gonna make it
because all I can do is yell at people.
I can't work, so.
[whipping sound]
Hey Mario, don't even screw with that cross brace
until we get the motor set up there
and see what it looks like.
- [Frank] 'Cause you don't even know your measurements yet
- 'Cause you're, we don't need that.
- We already, I did some pretty good measurements.
- [Jesse] No, listen, listen, you're making a bunch of,
- I'm pretty confident.
- Listen to me. You do something else,
'cause before we start wasting time making a cross brace
and stuff like that before we even see
what it looks like in there.
Let Frank and Jeremy cut that out
and fit it up in there and see what it,
see what it looks like and see how it needs to be made.
Gosh, I was tryna tell you,
that I took so many measurements yesterday.
- I don't give a.
- I know you don't, - I don't give a [bleep]
Let's put it up in there - [Mario] I got some good
reference points.
- Like I originally talked about.

- Let's put the motor up in there
and mount everything to it.
'Cause right now you guys are running around all crazy
and I don't think you guys are gonna make it.

that's gonna help make all,
do some fabricating.

- [Narrator 2] Frank cuts out the tr*nny tunnel
and Mario is still not getting Jesse's drift.
- If you wanna put the small rims,
we have to figure out the brakes.
If we go big rims then we could,
we have something that we could work on.
In other words-
- I don't wanna go big rims. - Okay.
- Keep with the whole concept of making it look stock, so.
- I'll call Design Products.
- Let's get it, actually, do you wanna give me the number
and I'll call 'em and get a track width on it?
- Yeah, yeah, go ahead. I'll call, I'm gonna get,
- Who is it? Give me the information, I'll handle it.
- Um, well I called Nissan.
- I know when Mario sucks, when I ask him, I go,
"Dude, do you want me to do it for you?
Gimme the number." I was like, he's,
and he said, yeah.
- He said, we don't have that, so.
- 'Cause he's over there trying to get brakes
and we don't even know what we're gonna use for a rear end.
So how are we gonna know what we need for brakes?
- [Mario] What's that?
- What are you calling on brakes for?
- I'm just,
- We don't even have a rear end.
- Not for the rear for the front.
- I'm gonna have Nauto work on the rear end,
'cause you don't want,
I can tell you don't wanna do it, so...
- It's just, I'm just, I'm not motivated for that.
- You know what? I'm not even [bleep] around with you, so.
- [Mario] Okay. I'm sorry.
- If you don't wanna do it, you don't wanna do it.

and get some stuff on its way here
and right now we don't have anything.

before we need brakes for anything.

'cause this isn't my first picnic.
I mean, even though I'm on crutches
and I can't work, I still know
[glass shattering] that we need to get,
- He was gonna put me to figure out some stuff
for the 240 rear suspension.
I feel I'm more fit to do some of the fab work right now,
even with a hurt hand.
So I don't want to get him pissed off.
It's, you know, he's, he's the dude of the show, so,
I'm just a peon here.
- If Mario gets kicked off the team,
then I think we'll be all right.
I'm already planning on him not being around
- Right now, my hand hurts, my head hurts, my stomach hurts.
I'm nauseated. You know,
who wants to be here? But I'm gonna do it.
- [Chrissy] You gotta pick up Mario.

- I guess this is a test of my leadership skills,
if I can second guess all their moves
and tell 'em the faster way to do it
instead of showing them.

- [Narrator 2] Mario tries to recover from Jesse's sting
and helps the rest of the team get the Z motor
into the Honeybee.
It's gonna be a very tight fit.
- [Chrissy] All right, down.
[tool cranking]
- [Mario] Okay. - [Jeremy] Okay.
- [Chrissy] That's fine. - [Jeremy] Hold it right there
- [Mario] All right. We're, we're,
we're good right now.
- [Frank] Wanna call it a day?
- [Jeremy] That's pretty close to where it's gonna be.
[metal clanking]
- [Narrator 2] Nauto is the brain of this operation.
[swoosh sound] [funky music starts]
At only 24 years old,
Nauto Nigishi is an expert at engine building
and computer tuning.
- If it's a customer's car, you know, build in the car
and give it to him and then customer drives it,
comes back with a, you know, big old smile on his face,
saying, you know, that was, you know, it was really fast.
You know, I really love the car.
You know, that's so, that's a sense of satisfaction.
- What I really dig about him is his,
he's passionate about what he does and I like him.
- The computer in the end is what makes or breaks you.
- If you're driving a car
with a bunch of computer mumbo jumbo,
then it could shut your car off from a satellite.
[team laughs]
They're like "Jesse James, through the traffic circle.
[imitates electronic sounds] Whoa.
That's how they're going to get you, man.
[team laughing]
That's why you gotta drive a car with a carburetor.
[whoosh sound]
- We're gonna go ahead and put our own computer in there,
which will do most,
will do all of the spark and fuel controls.
At the same time though, we're gonna utilize
a stock engine harness so we can pull all the power leads
and the ground leads so we don't have to, you know,
fabricate a whole new engine harness.
- While Nauto studies the computer diagram,
Chrissy does some homework of her own.
- Learning how to make a,
a cage.
Mario hasn't done it in 10 years
and Jessie's too gimpy to do it today, so.
[rock music begins]
- [Narrator 2] Chrissy draws out a floor plan
for her very first attempt at a roll cage.
- Run it right here and just, just follow along the profile
as close as you can get it.
- [Chrissy] Right.
- And then you just run kickers down it.
[rock music continues]
- ...other thing's, what?
- [Frank] Yeah, just a lot more.
- [Jesse] You think that's where it starts?
- [Chrissy] This is, yeah.
That's where...
- [Jesse] Move it in an inch and three quarter and try it.
- [Chrissy] Okay.
- The only way you're gonna learn how to bend tubes
- [Frank] Yeah, exactly.
- Is just... - [Frank] Do it.
- ...messing up a lot of tubing.

- The thing that makes Chrissy cool,
she asked me for help.
And I think that's the difference right there
in a male, female, anybody that wants to be doing this:
don't be afraid to ask for help.

and you're never gonna learn.
I mean I was the biggest pest
and I, there's a few people that hate me
because I mean I was
[imitates chattering]
in their ear every day.

- [Chrissy] Yeah.
- [Jesse] Look at that. Just go in more
- Yep - and it'll line up

a sixth grade geometry teacher
that's calling us ret*rds right now.

at the roll cage.

- I'm gonna measure like 20 times before I cut.

She tacks in the roll cage while Mario starts
making the motor mounts
that'll hold the Z motor in its new cocoon.
[welding torch sparking]
But Mario seems to be moving too slow for Frank and Jeremy.
- I mean he's only done one mount.
The other mount isn't done.
- [Jeremy] No, this mount's still not done.
- [Frank] They're still not finished.
- It's just tacked in there.
- Come Mario let's move, move, move!
- [Narrator 2] With these orders comes
the end of a lousy day three for Mario:
he burned his hand, [Mario yelling]
the boss yelled at him
and is considering kicking him off the team.
Hopefully tomorrow won't be such a zinger.

is drifting away.
- 'Cause Mario was taking too much bloody time.

Got one motor mount what isn't even finished,
it's only tacked in place
and the tr*nny mount is nothing.
You know, yesterday's goal was to get the roll cage in,
engine and tr*nny in,
but the engine and tr*nny didn't get in.
- If I had a better hand, I'd move faster.
- Ah, whatever. If you didn't put your,
put the flames out with your hand,
I mean, it wouldn't have happened.
Safety.
- No, that's true.
- [Frank] You're not a fireman.
- A reaction, no, I'm not a fireman.
- [Frank] Chrissy wasn't even panicking in there.
- My goal is I want to,
I wanna fire this thing up today.
- [Chrissy] Today?
- Today.
- [Frank] You're dreaming.

will be able to drive the car by Friday.

up to driving this on Friday?

I'm gonna go to the doctor right now and see what they say.

- [Narrator 2] As Jesse goes to get his foot fixed,
The build team finds itself fractured.
[glass shattering sounds]
- What the hell is going on over there
that's so difficult?
- I don't know. What are you doing over there?

- I thought you could have this thing done by 10 o'clock.
- [Mario] I know, I know.
- He said 10 o'clock yesterday, right?
- [Mario] All right, all right, all right!
- He was like "Oh, I'm gonna have it done by 10
because of Jesse coming in. - Weld it.
- I don't wanna be yelled at again."

- [Narrator 2] While the team is in need of intensive care,
Jesse is getting his monster stitches taken out
of his screwed-up foot.
Back in the garage,
Mario's slow progression on the tr*nny mount
is holding up Nauto from wiring the new computer.
- Right now. I just can't finalize the wiring yet
until the engine's, you know, fully mounted
sitting where it needs to sit.
Then I could, you know, go,
go ahead and finish off the wiring.
- We keep talking and talking and talking.
Everyone needs to just start working.
[rock music] [swoosh sound]
- [Narrator 2] Jeremy Allen likes
the old school approach to cars.
- [Jeremy] My passion is pretty much old hot rods,
customs, you know, stuff that's really mechanical
and, and has, you know, some cool lines to it.
[tires screeching]
All that needs to be done is
just these pieces just need to be welded,
and then two more holes cut right here and it's done.
Mario, we can't move on until this is done.
- It would be fine except we need parts. [indistinct]
We're gonna weld it on the car,
to max the angle of the tr*nny.
- No, don't worry about it. Just weld it.
- [Narrator 2] Finally the new tr*nny support
is welded in place,
just in time, as Jesse returns
to show off his new custom cast.
[Jesse laughing]
- You like that?
- [Frank] Yeah.
- [Chrissy] How were you bruised?
[Jesse laughing]
- [Narrator 2] After show and tell is over,
Jeremy goes to a local junkyard
to find a suitable rear end for the Honeybee.
[funky music playing]
- Nope, too wide.
- [Narrator 2] This Datsun junker truck
has the right dimensions,
so Jeremy takes it back to the garage.
- [Jeremy] Hey, it's a rear end.
We took apart the whole differential.
Took the axles out, took the,
dropped out the third member,
welded up the spider gears.
- [Frank] Hang on.
- [Narrator 2] They carry their new customized rear end
under the honeybee and hope for a good fit.
- [Jeremy] Zip, zip, zip.
- [Chrissy] Are you sure you've got
the loose springs in the right way?
- [Frank] Chrissy! We're not women.
That's a girls' thing. Girl's mistake.
[rock music]
[tools clattering]
- Look at that like it
like it was made for this car, almost.
- [Narrator 2] Now that the rear is taken care of,
the front of the car becomes the focus again.
Chrissy takes apart the Honeybee's exhaust manifolds
and reconstructs them so they'll fit
around the new 350 Z engine.
[tools clanking]
[welding torch sparking]
- [Jeremy] Yeah, the exhaust manifolds are dumping out
in front of the engine now
as opposed to in back of the engine
because of the clearance problems we had in back.
- [Narrator 2] Nauto works on
replacing the Honeybee's fuel pump
with a high pressure one, courtesy of Apex.
This one is designed for fuel injection,
so it'll work with the new motor.
Now they're ready to drop the 350 Z engine in for good.
- [Chrissy] Now it needs to come forward, huh?
- [Mario] Yeah, forward.
- [Jeremy] Yeah. Come back here.
- [Chrissy] Yeah, it needs to go forward.
- [Frank] You're too far back.
There you go. You better hold it up,
'cause I'm holding the tr*nny.
- [Chrissy] Do you have the tr*nny up?
- [Mario] Can you hold this?
- [Frank] Yeah, I've got it, I've got it.
Get some, get some much longer bolts.
- [Mario] Oh, right there. Right there, now don't move it.
Don't move it.
- [Nauto] It's not going through still.
Unless I have the wrong type of bolt.
- Take all the weight off of it.
- [Mario] Oh yeah. Look at that.
- [Narrator 2] Day four got off to a bad start,
but team Honeybee managed to put in a new rear end.
The 350 Z engine and tr*nny are in for the last time,
tomorrow they'll see if the new motor will be compatible
with the old Honeybee.
[rock music begins] It's day five.
It's up to Nauto to actually make the 2004 engine work
in the 30-year-old car.
He brings in the computer that will tell the car what to do
and Nauto is gonna tell the computer what to do.
- The engine itself has sensors on it,
which the computer needs to see signals from.
So these are all the wires to the sensors
and the various outputs to the engine.
So, right now, I'm wiring the inputs
and outputs to the engine.
- [Narrator 2] Mario welds the tubing
for the new throttle body.
- [Jesse] How you doing?
Who welded that? You?
- Yeah.
- That's awesome. Let me see that.
- It's okay. I rushed it. I was late.
I had to do it this morning, so.
- Damn, Mario, you got some redeeming qualities.
- [Mario] I don't know. It's okay.
- That's awesome. - [Mario] Damn, thanks, so.
- Did you see how good Mario can weld?
Somehow the mouth doesn't fit the hands.
Well I got pretty pissed at him and I yelled at him
and lit him up pretty good
because he was kind of [bleep] the dog
as far as getting that rear end
and stuff like that and,
but, but then, he's a pretty rad welder,
so I can't like, you know,
that like totally balances everything out.
You know, you're like kind of a weirdo personally,
but then you can weld really good.
That's me. Look at me.
I look like I'm gonna rob a liquor store
but I'm a good fabricator and welder so that makes me okay.
[Jesse laughing]
Isn't that funny that if I would've never saw his welding
and how great it was, I'd probably still be up his [bleep]
"What's your problem?"
[Jesse laughing]
That's a little baby one.
If it fits be-
fits between those exhaust pipes, it'll be cool.
[air whooshing]
- [Jeremy] We'll have to take this fan off of course, but...
- [Jesse] Yeah, that clears the exhaust.
Well, everybody's working. That's good.
Except for me.
I'm lazy.
- It's like, it's like you've been coming in,
and I'll see you for 10 minutes.
One minute you're sitting here.
Suddenly you'll hear, "hey look."
- [Jesse] I had surgery a week ago
- Oh okay. And the next thing you know
you turn around and he's gone.
I know, I know.
- Come on man. Have a little compassion.
- And that's what they said- compassion.
I've got compassion for women. Not guys.
- All right.
Tomorrow, wear some work pants.
This isn't- - These are.
- This isn't Jack LaLanne's health spa.
You should pull 'em up more.
- [Frank] Yeah, I know.
- [Jesse] Yeah, like that.
That's how you have to wear 'em now
- [Narrator 2] Piece by piece,
this puzzle is coming together
and Nauto has made some progress on wiring the new computer.
But he's not getting a pulse from the Honeybee's chassis.
- The wiring I did is for the engine side,
we're having problems with the chassis side.
The original wiring that was from the car
is not,
still not functioning.
- [Narrator 2] While Nauto and Jeremy
try to resuscitate the Honeybee's heart,
Frank and Mario work on lowering and stiffening
the front suspension
by shortening the springs.
This will make the drift car easier to control
during the power slides.
[tires squealing]
[metal clicking] [rock music continues]
[mechanical whirring]
[welding torch sparking]
Jesse welds Chrissy's roll cage inside the car
[Jesse whistling]
[welding torch sparking] [rock music continues]
and Jeremy and Nauto have found the main power wire
for the body's harness.
So they're ready to fire it up now,
but it's not cranking. [Jeremy speaking softly]
[car engine cranking]
- [Jeremy] Go, and again.
- Keep on going. Keep on going.
[welding torch sparking] [car engine cranking]
- Yeah, let's stop.
There's a signal somewhere.
What's telling it not to do it.
[Jeremy and Nauto speaking softly]
[loud drumming]
- [Narrator 2] In an ancient Monster Garage ritual
The Kokoro Taiko Kai drumming group
plays the traditional firing-up-the-car song.
[flute and drums continue]
[car engine cranking] [flute and drums continue]
- I just heard something fire.
[flute and drums continue]

[group shouting]
[flute and drums slow to a stop]
- Did you check the fuel line?
- [Nauto] Yeah. - Pressure?
- [Nauto] We're checking it again right now.
- [Jesse] All right,
you know what, - Yeah?
- [Jesse] before we fire it up, let's,
let's get all the radiator and exhaust and stuff done.
- As long as I can get like 10 seconds of starting,
I'm happy. That's all I want.
- [Jesse] Okay.
- That's all I want to hear.
- [Jesse] All right.
- [Narrator 2] Nauto gets a little extra time
to try and figure out the problem.
- [Jesse] You, you hear it?
- [Nauto] Yeah. It's not pumping at all right now.
- [Jesse] Yeah, nothing's coming out.
- Nothing's coming out.
I think it's sucking. Polarity's backwards.
[car cranking] [suspenseful music]
- Alright. It's a wiring issue.
It's a wiring issue. [beeping]
Right now, it's, right now, if anything
it's real pigling,
and if it ain't firing, [beeping continues]
then it's a wiring issue.
[band playing flute and drums]
- [Narrator 2] Jesse stalls to give Nauto more time.
He has a wrap-up meeting with the team.
- You, steering and all that stuff's done?
- Yep.
Exhaust, driveshaft will be here
first thing in the morning.
[flute and drums continue]
[car cranking] [flute and drums continue]
- [Jesse] What do you think Nauto? Huh?
[Nauto mumbles]
You ever see Homer on the Simpsons
when there's like a nuclear meltdown?
That's me, wiring.
[fakes confusion noises]
[flute and drums continue]
- [Nauto] I just think it's a matter of one or two wires.
- Well, let's start in the morning, we'll...
'Cause we still gotta finish.
I can finish the exhaust
and get all the controls and everything done.
[drums and cymbals continue]
- [Narrator] Will Nauto be able to save this Honeybee
from extinction?
- We're gonna be here till midnight.
I'm telling you right now.
[tools clattering]
- [Narrator] Or will this monster go up in smoke?
[electric sound effect] ♪ Monster, Monster Garage.
[light percussive sound] [cute chime]
[Oriental music]
- It's the final build day.
Time is running out for team Honeybee,
so Jesse sneaks into the garage
before the rest of the crew
to get going on a tricked-out exhaust
that he envisioned last night,
even if he's got to hop around on one foot to get it done.
[rock music]
When the rest of the team arrives, the pressure is on Nauto
to get the electrical system working.
- I got a lot on my mind.
I only slept for like an hour or 2, 2-3 hours.
That's about it.
Just going through different scenarios in my head.
Just trying to plan out how I'm gonna diagnose this today.
You know, I just gotta try to, you know, calm down
and really figure it out.
[oriental music]
- Do you have any wire diagrams that aren't in Japanese?
- No, that's the problem.
[oriental music continues]
- [Jesse] What about this Frank?
- [Frank] It's gonna be fine.
- Okay.
Yeah, just mark that.
Do a straight one and then a depth one.
- [Frank] Cool.
- [Narrator 2] To keep the honeybee
looking tame but sounding fierce,
Jesse is going to make three pieces for the exhaust.
Two will extend from where the original pipes end.
Those two pieces will connect to the two-into-one pipe
that Jesse fabricated to go into the side fender.
A hole will be cut out of the fender
to allow the exhaust to escape.
[suspenseful music]
In the meantime, Frank will install the new driveshaft.
- All I've done is cut up two to make one.
They've used this off of the stock 350Z
and then they've used this
off of the Datsun pickup
for the wheel end.
[rock music begins]
And there is our drive train complete.
- [Narrator 2] Chrissy finishes welding the roll cage
and Nauto is still diagnosing the wiring problem.
- It's pretty much the injectors and the coils.
It's when they're firing.
I don't think they're firing at the right time.
It's outta sync.
- [Jeremy] Let's, let's just try and start it again.
See what happens.
- Okay, hold on. Let me just, lemme just check this.
- [Narrator 2] If this fails,
Nauto has no intention of falling on his own sword.
- So, what, you guys always destroy the cars
after the part if it doesn't work out, right?
See, I wanna take it home and try to figure it out.
[team laughing]
Hey, lemme take the car. Let me just figure it out.
- We should already be finished.
[rock music]
- You know what? Let's try hooking it up again.
- After working on the wiring all day,
Nauto tries to crank it one more time.
[engine cranks, then revvs]
[team cheering] [engine revving]
- [Chrissy] Yeah! Yeah. Yeah.
- [Nauto] Woo! Yeah, thanks guys.
[team cheering] [engine revving]
- Awesome. [Nauto speaks Japanese]
- Here he goes talking in Japanese again.
- If it wasn't for like everyone that helped me out, man,
I was going nuts last night.
I seriously could not sleep.
That was like a couple feedback wires that I...
Usually, I didn't do it,
but for some reason I wired 'em in yesterday
and then I snipped all those off this morning
and then checked double, you know, triple checked everything
and then that was it.
- Oh, that sounded good? [Nauto sighs]
- [Chrissy] How do you feel?
- Relieved.
- [Jeremy] Yeah.
- We're going. We're going. We're going. We're going.
We're going drifting, drifting.
Sideways, sideways, sideways.
I hit that. Oh. Oh. Sideways.
We're drifting. We're drifting. We're drifting.
- [Narrator 2] The electrical system works,
but this monster is still not done.
I think we'll be done early.
- I'd say 10 o'clock we'll be done, maybe.
We'll be outta here.
- We're gonna be here till midnight,
I'm telling you right now. [tools clattering]
[tools buzzing]
Look at that 27-piece pipe.
- [Narrator 2] Jesse finishes the first exhaust pipe
and works on the second longer one.
And Mario finishes the custom-made screen.
- That's pretty cool. Let's go try it. Come on.
We're gonna put this on [metal clacking]
so the exhaust will come up through there.
Like a beehive. It's like a beehive.
[imitates buzzing sounds]
We're getting a buzz.
[imitates buzzing sounds]
[intense music continues]
- Yes. - [Chrissy] Beautiful.
- Perfect.
- [Narrator 2] With only minutes to spare,
this monster is coming together.
The tr*nny is covered up,
The new Cobra racing seat is mounted,
and the original vintage hard-tofind honeycomb hubcaps
add a nice finishing touch to a car
that's a sweet Honeybee on the outside,
but has the heart of a fast, powerful sports car
on the inside.
[rock music continues] [engine revving]
- That makes my brain itch. That was good.
- [Mario] What's up!
- You like that?
- Yeah! I love it!
- [Narrator 2] Since a clutch and a cast don't mix,
Frank's boss, Rhys Millen shows up
to put this stealth monster to the test
in the Veterans stadium parking lot.
[percussive intro]
[car revving] [oriental music begins]
- Yeah! [team cheering]
Yeah baby! [team cheering]
[rock music continues] [engine revving]
- Yeah. See? I told you Honeybees rule.
[laughing]
How's it feel?

That was awesome.
- Cool. Let's go get some tools.

Jesse's never drifted before,
so he watches Ken warm up to see how it's done.

I have to say, I thought it was lame at first,
but till you get out and try it or see it,
