rip, grind and burn,
transforming ordinary street vehicles
into monster machines in the "Monster Garage."

- [Narrator] This week's challenge:
Turn a 2001 Toyota Tundra
into a car fit for a 400-pound gorilla.
The rules:
The monster must appear to be stuck.
They'll get 5,000 bucks for parts.
The crew has seven days and nights.
For the first day they design,
the next five, they build,
and on the seventh day, they meet the gorilla.
If successful, the team gets a $3,400 set
of Mac Tools and the clock starts now.
[apes grunting] [glass clanging]
[engine revving] [garage door scraping]
From the concrete jungles of Long Beach,
Jesse tears the Tundra into the garage.
[upbeat metal music]
Inside his big heart of darkness,
there's a soft spot for anything simian.
Koko, a 25-year-old lowland gorilla,
is a star in the animal kingdom.
- Hi, Koko.
My name's Jesse.
I'm the vanilla gorilla.
She can understand over 2,000 words
and uses sign language to communicate thousands
back to her caretaker.
- [Penny] What, gorilla him? [laughs]
- [Narrator] Jesse knows the freedom
a cool set of wheels can bring.
Now he wants to give an ape an escape.
- You'll have a car to flip around in.
So I'll see you later.
Bye, Koko. [transition whooshing]
- [Narrator] And who better to design a gorillamobile
than cage expert Don Everett,
video game art director, Dan Padilla,
and Gorilla Foundation representative, Peter Rado,
Koko's personal vet, John Oxenreider.
The design team climbs up to the tree house
for a meeting with the prime primate.
- Hi. - Hey, Jesse.
- Hey, what's up, man? - You back?
- Well, this should be a pretty fun one.
[crickets hissing] - This gorillamobile
will be equipped for fun
[starter motor churning] and fit for survival.
[bars clinking] [transition whooshing]
- The problem is that,
in case of any kind of either a medical emergency
or a natural disaster,
there's really no way to get the gorilla safely
off of the property.
- The thing that I wanna make, and I wanna make it cool.
- Yeah. - You know,
if we're gonna do it, let's do the coolest one
and make it not cool for us,
let's make it cool for her.
Watching Koko on the videos and stuff,
she looks a little bored. [The Big Schwag yawning]
I mean, breaking the project down,
we know we have to make a cage on the back of it, you know?
And it's gonna...
I'm thinking it's gonna be kinda high up.
You know, it'll probably look sorta like the popemobile.
[ethereal electronic music] [monks chanting]
- We gotta figure out, you know,
something to get her up in there.
You know, do we...
I mean, do we wanna make the cage stationary?
- The idea is that you're gonna have the cage
that you get the gorilla into, by whatever means,
and then the cage gets loaded into the truck.
So you wouldn't be trying to load the gorilla into the cage
where the cage is part of the truck.
- It's separate. - Separate?
- All right. - We do need something
to get it in the back of the vehicle
when they're- - Yeah.
- 'Cause we certainly can't lift it.
- A lift gate off the back of the vehicle would do that.
If you had a lift gate off the back here,
or bring it up to your deck height,
then you could roll it, the unit, in there.
- And we don't have to actually detach the cage
and drive away.
We could actually, you know, dump it off
and just get it so it's ground level.
- Yeah, right. - And get in and then,
[model clanging] you know, lock it on.
We'll just make it so it looks cool,
so that'll keep it small,
'cause we try to make it too tall and too big,
then it's gonna look, you know,
a little funky-looking, sticking this high up,
and so we'll make it...
All right, let's get to work on this thing.

- [Narrator] To make this pickup pick up an ape,
the truck will get in touch with its inner cage:
[doors banging] [lock clicking]
A sliding door between the cage and front seat
will let Koko ride shotgun,
[energetic metal music continues]
stronger leaf springs will provide additional support
for the cage,
and rails in the hydraulic system from a forklift
will be used to raise and lower the custom gorilla cage.
[cage clanging] [pen squeaking]
[energetic electronic music]
[tires screeching]
[whimsical electronic music]
Day two: [energetic metal music]
Out of the mist and into the garage,
the build team enters their new domain.
[transition whooshing]
All the way from Clearwater, Florida,
hydraulics expert, Bill Tregillus.

With the gorilla at large,
Jesse takes charge. [upbeat rock music]
- Cool, so we're gonna make a monkeymobile.
I've been sending videos back and forth with this Koko,
this female gorilla,
and she even said, she looked at this-
- A female, huh? - Yeah.
She points at the screen and goes [beats chest].
She just meant that I was a gorilla, so...
[enchanting electronic music] [Koko smooching]
- [Penny] Right on the lips!
- You know, what we're gonna have to do
is we're gonna scab this forklift
and make it so this cage will pop down
and be at ground level,
basically kind of like a roll-off dumpster.
- Yeah. - You know,
how they push him off and come...
And then, it'll pull it back up.
And then I thought we could take the front part of that off
and lay that down where the bed...
You know, take the bed off
and lay that down and have it just work horizontal
and push it on and off.
And then there's a bunch of specs for the cages.
Like, it has to be covered.
Like, people can't see the gorilla going down the freeway.
Actually, I was thinking she would be on this side
and then we'd open up a path,
put like a doggy door that has a panel that slips out
and then cage the whole passenger side of the truck,
so she can get up there and sit in like a passenger seat.
It'll be two separate teams:
Half start pulling this apart,
and the other half will start measuring
and cutting metal for a cage,
'cause it's gonna be kind of a lot of cutting and welding.
[power tools whirring] - It's coming down.
[metal clanging]
- [Narrator] The build team peels the Tundra down.
[upbeat metal music]
["Monster Garage" cast laughing]
[metal clanging]
- [Jesse] Make sure my hand wasn't connected to it first.
["Monster Garage" cast laughing]
[glass cracking] - Oh!
[metal clanging] - Whoa!
[saw whirring]

- Inspecting the forklift for pickable parts,
Jeff, Bill and Jason realized [fabricators chattering]
this machine won't harvest the necessary hydraulics.
- It's all here. - Except for the track.
- Somebody's gonna have to make an executive decision
on that. [energetic metal music]
- [Narrator] The garage CFO,
chief fabricating officer, answers to the call.
- These aren't double-acting cylinders, they're just single.
They'll only push it out.
We have to find a way to retract it.
- Then we need double-action ones there.
- Yeah. - That's why I was hoping
if we can do that that way and find double-action cylinders,
replace the ones that are in there-
- We were thinking about, or taking those cylinders,
take one of 'em and flip it around,
cause one to push and one to pull.
- I mean, we got the forklift and everything's here,
but I think we'd probably be better off
making it from scratch.
'Cause we'll spend as much time
as we're gonna spend trying to-
- Like, quantify that. - You know,
make it work for what we need.
I think we could probably
just have the other thing done perfect just like we like it.
[energetic rock music] - Not using the forklift
means the team will need to purchase a hydraulic system
and fabricate rails to move the cage that Jeff is designing.
- It's gonna be five feet high and eight feet wide.
Most of the cages for her that we built,
I mean, it's all up to, usually, the keeper,
but four feet high is good for her,
as long as they can get in there and crouch,
but they want Koko to be extra comfortable,
so... [laughs]
[text whooshing] [fast-paced electronic music]
- [Narrator] At his fabrication shop,
Jeff has made a career out of putting things behind bars.
[bars clinking]
- It's enclosures, railings, gates...
When you're down there working with gorillas,
a lot of times they'll charge the bars and stuff like that.
It can k*ll you easily,
and a gorilla has five, six times the strength of a man,
so make sure the lock's on the cage. [laughs]
[upbeat percussive music]
We're probably looking at around 1,500 pounds
for the cage itself.
I'm gonna try to get this together,
so we can get materials ordered tonight.
Hopefully we'll have something to build tomorrow.
[transition whooshing] [upbeat rock music]
- [Narrator] Anxious to get something done
on the first build day,
Vinny begins work on the door
that will separate Koko's cage from the cab.
[angle grinder whirring]
[arc welder whirring]
Rachelle helps by doing what she does best:
Welding. [arc welder whirring]
- I like this welder. [laughs]
[transition whooshing]
- [Narrator] The team needs to design a lift system
for their cage. - This will be-
- [Narrator] Although Jesse told them
to build it from scratch, [fabricators chattering]
they are tempted by the shiny, new forklift.
- Well, I'm going both ways.
I don't know.
- I know it's- - I mean,
that's a hard decision.
- You know what?
It's gonna make or break how long this build takes.
- I like how strong this is and I like the tolerance on it.
- Well, if I get it off of here and lay it up on the truck,
see how much it squats the truck,
see how much it's gonna hang out and...
You know what I mean?
Let's look at it. [angle grinder whirring]
- [Narrator] Against Jesse's better judgment,
Jason jumps on the forklift to start tearing it apart,
but the forklift refuses to fork it over.
[metal clanging] - Ah, sh**t!
Hold on.
Oh, we gotta take those rollers off.
[hammer banging] [upbeat metal music continues]
[power tools whirring]
- [Narrator] After three hours,
Jason has nothing to show for his efforts,
except a misguided determination
to keep heading down the wrong road.
[transition whooshing] - I really would've liked
to have gotten this off
and actually started fabbing the mechanics of the bed.
I mean, tomorrow, by an hour or two after we start,
we better be working full speed in one direction
and you know, go with it.
[energetic metal music] - The team walks out
on day two leaving behind half a truck
and a full workload.
"Monster Garage" factoid:
The average man can bench press 150 to 200 pounds.
A fully-grown gorilla can bench press over 400.

- [Narrator] Day three: [upbeat tribal music]
The team enters the garage
and Jason the engineer has a new design idea
that doesn't use the forklift.
[transition whooshing] - I don't think
we're gonna use anything off the forklift.
Maybe that little flashing light.
We've come up with this new idea
to make it swing back,
and it's gonna stay level the whole time.
[ethereal electronic music]
- [Narrator] Instead of using the forklift,
the new design incorporates a pair of eight-foot arms,
powered by hydraulic cylinders,
to lift the cage on and off the truck.
- I see. - So we're not gonna...
We're not gonna use any of the hydraulics?
- No, nothing. - Because all we need-
- The hydraulics on there,
we would've had to replace anyways,
even if we're using that, so that thing's useless to us.
[eerie electronic music]
- [Narrator] Jesse moseys into the garage
to check the team's progress.
[punching bag banging]
- [Jesse] Just going back and forth.
- [Bill] We have a question now,
a big design change question though.
What we wanna do is...
He came up with an idea last night.
- Oh, so like- - So one fluid motion.
It'll come all the way out and drop on the ground.
- [Jason] That looks like less labor.
- Well, we're cool.
They actually have a really great idea, so...
- Yeah, think that's good? - Yeah.
- [Narrator] Jesse likes the new lifting idea,
but first they have to build the cage.
[power tools whirring]
- Right, this is all the upper framework
for the upper part of the cage
and the two-by-threes for the lower foundation.
[energetic rock music]
You gotta start with a square base first.
Everything builds off of that,
so it's the most critical part right there.
[upbeat rock music continues] [arc welder whirring]
This is the main cage on the back.
And then, I think they're working on the subframe
that's gonna set in to capture it onto the truck body.
[upbeat rock music continues]
- [Narrator] The subframe will be mounted
to the rear of the Tundra
to create a stable base for the cage.
[upbeat rock music continues] [power tools whirring]
[fabricators chattering]
- Off by 1/16th.
I think we can live with that.
[energetic rock music] [angle grinder whirring]
- Rachelle works on the door
that will allow Koko access to the cab.
She's no stranger to making cages.
- You put the stuff in frames,
just as well that we did some work for the LA Zoo.
We've done some work for some of the prisons.
[text whooshing] [mellow metal music]
- Rachelle welds metal by day [arc welder whirring]
and plays metal by night. [audience cheering]
- I like creating.
Like, I mean my other side with like music and art
and everything, I'm really creative.
Kind of like a tribute [laughs] to the Misfits.
It's the Missfits, it's all girls.
[audience cheering]
I got into it when I was really young
and just liked the whole, like, horror image.
I was always into horror movie.
[gorilla grunting] [power tools whirring]

- [Narrator] Rachelle and Vinny overweld the cage
with the strength to withstand 10 gorillas.
[energetic metal music continues]
- Everybody's working, that's good.
I think I'm gonna try to work a little bit.
So I'm resisting the urge to do exhaust systems.
- [Narrator] But that's not the only thing he's resisting.
Jesse's got something else in mind.
I'm almost 35, I'm gonna retire in two weeks.
- 35 was a day, huh? - A week from Monday.
[power tools whirring]
- [Narrator] Male gorillas are sometimes known
to leave their family group
to establish their own band, or to roam alone.
Could the vanilla gorilla be following nature's course
by leaving "Monster Garage?"
- I don't want my own TV show anymore.
I just wanna do nothing.

- [Narrator] Jesse may be contemplating early retirement,
[energetic rock music]
but the build team has no choice but to keep working.
[saw whirring]
Bill builds the cage for the cab.
[power tools whirring]
He may know his way around the garage,
but he's no rocket scientist.
- Hey, I failed sixth grade three times.
[text whooshing] [whimsical electronic music]
The first time, [motorcycle engine revving]
I failed it just because of stupidity.
The second time, I got like...
I didn't do anything.
I got like straight Fs all year long,
except for shop class. [laughs]
And then, I failed again
and finally I was like, "Oh, crap, this sucks!"
But when I got to high school, I knew everybody.
Everyone's like, "Bill?
Bill, hey, what's up, man?" [laughs]
'Cause I should have been in like 10th grade.
[whimsical electronic music] [motorcycle engine revving]
[upbeat rock music]
- [Narrator] The box for this beast is getting bigger.
[arc welder whirring]
The welds on the cage are grinded down,
so the outside panels have a clean fit.
[upbeat rock music continues] [arc welder whirring]
Having come up with acceptable design
for the lift mechanism,
Jason has moved on to designing something new.
- Having come up with a final length and dimensions
on the cylinder size, I want to keep it under three feet,
but I'm figuring I could probably
concentrate a little better later on tonight
when I can sit down and go through the calculations,
and tomorrow morning, have, you know,
a final, definite answer on what size cylinder
we're gonna need and... [eerie electronic music]
- [Narrator] Jason's subframe is ready for the truck.
The future holding place for the cage
is centered on the rear frame and welded into place.
[arc welder whirring]
- Today was good, today was way better than yesterday.
- Better than yesterday. - Yeah.
- Tomorrow's gonna be very productive.
- Yeah. [upbeat metal music]
- The team ends the build day feeling positive
about their custom cage cruiser.
Day four: [bananas whooshing]
[apes grunting] [crickets hissing]
The team enters the garage
and discusses the lift mechanism for the cage.
- We know minimum cylinder size?
- What we got? - Now, we need at least a...
At least a two-foot.
At least a two-foot cylinder.
[percussive electronic music] - The cylinders
need to lift and lower 2,000 pounds,
and will play a critical role
in the success of the lift mechanism.
While the rest of the team gets to work,
Jeff hunts for cylinders.
- So we'll see.
We got some freebies at my shop in San Diego,
hydraulic cylinders, it's in the right size,
they're double-actuating, 24-inch,
three-inch-bored cylinders, so...
- [Narrator] With the cylinders on their way,
Jason works out an equation for their placement.
- To the back. [futuristic electronic music]
- He says he's got formulas and this and that,
but I don't know, dude, I'm just here to work.
That's what I'm here for.

- From crashing a Caddy to customizing classics,
Vinny does it all at his fab shop.
This is my shop, this is what I do.
- [Narrator] But he got his start by doing some dirty work.
- I was washing cars at a used car lot,
you know, making minimum wage.
[upbeat metal music continues]
You know, I figured I gotta do something else
besides wash cars, you know?
I got a family and everything
and I don't want them to be starving every day
because of me.
I got a couple of homeboys out here
that wanna come out and barbecue and party.
- I say, what's up? - I'm not ready to eat.
- I figured, well, you know, my pops was a welder,
so I'll go and try it out.
Once I got started it was like,
"Yeah, maybe this is what I should be doing."
You know, you can do anything in life that you want.
You can be a loser if you want.
You can be somebody if you want.
You're pretty much taking up my beer drinking time,
so I think it's time to beat it.
[fabricators chattering]
- The garage has welcomed primatologist Mary Baker
to observe the human apes at work.
- Peaches is the one in the very back
with the blue baseball cap.
Right now, I think that he's the dominant male,
because he spends a lot of time
with the one lone female in the group.
Junior, he seems to make contact most with Peaches
and he's also made contact with the female,
so it could be he's one of their offspring.
Mr. Smith is the one that's doing...
That's working on the vehicle right down in the front.
He's spending so much time alone,
I think he might be very, very low ranking in the group,
or maybe brand new to the group.
[ape grunting]
Legs is the one that's in the car.
He's sort of working the group, I think.
I've noticed him make contact with Junior
and Peaches and Jane, so I kind of feel
like he's trying to be friendly with everybody
to maybe raise his status.
[dramatic tribal music]
[transition whooshing]
That's a different species that's approaching.
It's, I think, very interesting
that they're not at all concerned that this other species
has approached the juvenile of the group.
[gorilla impersonator grunting]
This looks like some kind of a dominant struggle
between the gorilla and Peaches,
and the gorilla's stolen the piece of bar away from Peaches.
Perhaps this is an attempt at a dominance coup,
or taking over the troop.
Oh, now, this is very interesting.
Mr. Smith is apparently mimicking his behavior
and attempting to groom him.
Perhaps he's so low on the totem
and sort of the pecking hierarchy
that he's trying to make friends with the gorilla.
- What's up? - No, get outta here!
- That small bit of friendship apparently didn't work out.
[gorilla impersonator grunting]
[fabricators chattering] [upbeat electronic music]
- [Narrator] The gorilla hatch is mounted to the truck,
and Vinny makes it a permanent fixture.
[arc welder whirring]
The cab door is completed [upbeat percussive music]
and the attention turns to finishing the cage.
- All, we gotta cut it and then put it in, weld it up.
[arc welder whirring]
I mean, it sounds simple,
[laughs] but it's gonna take a while.
- [Narrator] The cage weave is tight enough
to prevent Koko from grabbing things
from the outside of the cage,
but big enough to get food in.
[power tools whirring] [Vinny imitating ape grunting]
[energetic rock music] [arc welder whirring]
The cylinders from West Tech Metal Fabricators arrive.
- Cylinders! - Nada!
- [Narrator] But they can't be mounted
until a cage is complete.
- Nada! [upbeat rock music]
- There's still a lot of work to be done,
and we only got like two days left, dude.
So tomorrow, we really, really need to like start kicking
[glass clanging] on this thing.
- [Narrator] It's the end of day four,
and still no sign of Jesse.
- I mean, there were a couple questions
that I had that Jesse could have answered.
Would've been nice if he would've stopped by
and, you know, given us some suggestions.
Tomorrow, if we run into a problem where, you know,
we might have to get his guidance and he's not here
and you know, we're gonna have to make a decision
and hope that, you know,
our decision is to Jesse's likings.

it seemed like we had everything kinda under control,
but now, all of a sudden, it's like two days left, you know?
I think just making sure that the hydraulic pick stuff
on this thing works properly.
- Yeah. - I think we have
all the right parts and I hope that Jason's calculations
were right on the swing of it.
[upbeat metal music] After three days of drawing,
Jason finally begins to build his masterful lift mechanism.
He starts with the arms that will lift the cage.
[angle grinder whirring]
[upbeat metal music continues]
[rotary tool head whirring]
- The arms are taking a little bit longer
than I thought they would, but it's just the way I am.
I like to make everything perfect,
and I might just have to push that aside
and go for, you know, who cares about looks, just function.
[text whooshing] [upbeat electronic music]
I graduated about a year and a half ago,
I got a Bachelor's in Engineering.
Now I'm in building customized suspensions
for off-road vehicles,
- [Narrator] Armed with a college degree,
Jason feels the Force is with him.
- I can very easily visualize the forces.
I can visualize, you know,
where a force is gonna be concentrated in one spot,
as opposed to another, and know that,
"Okay, well, we need to make this part stronger."
And I'm always gonna do a perfect job,
or I'll do the best damn job possible under any conditions,
given the amount of time.
[transition whooshing] [arc welder whirring]
[machinery clanging]

- Tank and pumps, baby!
- [Narrator] The final element
needed to operate the lift system arrives.
- This is the hydraulic unit
[upbeat rock music continues]
that's gonna actually power those cylinders that we got.
So we'll put it like that.
- Oh, we're not... - If we got room,
let's mount it like that.
- [Vinny] Well, can't we just bring it down a little?
- You mean at the end? - Yeah,
we mount it like this,
it'll bring a little- - If you don't like it,
we'll go up right- - Yeah, I agree with you.
I agree. - So it'll be
completely around- - This little,
meticulous stuff's gonna k*ll us.
- Yeah, I know. - I don't wanna be here
Friday night at 12 o'clock.

[machinery buzzing] - With a day-and-a-half left,
Vinny would prefer a little less conversation
and more action.
- I think we have too many meetings,
too many issues about talking,
"Well, let's do this this way, let's do it that way.
Well, it'd look cool this way."
You know what?
Let's just figure out a way that it works
and do it and be done with it.
It's starting to scare me.
I mean, I don't like to fail, I don't wanna fail.
It's crunch time, dude.
We just gotta mow it down, [arc welder whirring]
because the way I see it right now,
if we're at the same pace that we're doing right now,
we're not gonna make it.
- We still gotta get leaf springs.
Hey, what about the leaf springs, dude?
- I'm gonna get to those later.
- Right after lunch or before- - After.
- Lunch or after lunch. - Just before.
Before the end of tonight. - Okay.
And we can't set the cage on there,
we can't fit nothing until we get those leaf springs back.
[energetic metal music] - Unlike Jason,
Vinny is in the business of doing, not planning.

The leaf springs are sent out to get reinforced,
so they can handle the additional weight
of Koko in the cage.
- We could still do work,
it's just that we need those leaf springs now, you know?
- Jeff bottoms out [upbeat metal music]
and builds the floor for the cage.
[saw whirring]
[arc welder whirring] [hammer banging]
[upbeat metal music continues] [drill whirring]
- We use countersunk screws, so everything, once it's down,
it's all flush.
A gorilla can actually take, like, a corked out nut
and can get the thing unspun,
so you don't wanna give 'em anything
that they can grab onto.
[upbeat rock music]
- [Narrator] The cage is floored
and the attention turns to the hydraulics.
Remember, Bill failed sixth grade three times.
If his hydraulics don't work,
failure number four could get ugly.
- And then when I bolt this up,
then it'll just be a matter of meeting hoses
to these two pieces.
[upbeat metal music] [fabricators chattering]
- A little lower. - The batteries from Stinger
arrive to power the hydraulics,

Dude, that cage is almost finished, man.

[Jeff imitating ape grunting] [cage rattling]
- Wow! [upbeat electronic music]
[fabricators chattering]
- [Narrator] With the cage nearing completion,
Jason cuts the pole that will connect the arms to the cage,
allowing it to swing. [saw whirring]
- I just messed up big time.
- Oh, good- - Cut it way too short.
Let's find out why.
I measured the frame a couple times,
and every time, I guess I'm a little dyslexic today,
I read the tape measure backwards,
and instead of reading 85, I read 58.
[transition whooshing] [futuristic electronic music]
- [Narrator] The engineer of the team
is having a problem with numbers.
Hopefully his design for the lift mechanism
won't have any miscalculations.
I'm just gonna have to cut the extra 27 off
and weld it back together.
- All right? - Well, frustrated.
[fabricators chattering]
- [Narrator] Reluctantly, Vinny steps in to fix his mistake.
[arc welder whirring]
[upbeat metal music]
Mr. Talk watches as Mr. Action works.
- Ready to rock and roll!
- [Narrator] It's the end of another day
and still no sign of Jesse.
[echoing effect]
- Oh, it just kinda takes the wind out of sails,
you know, a little bit.
Yeah, I'm kinda looking forward to hearing job well done.
[fabricators chattering] - But these guys
are keeping their eyes on the prize.
- Shall we just push ahead and finish?
- Yeah. - Let's finish it either way.
- [Jeff] Let's rock it.
- I don't think he's been a leader to us really.
Do you? - No.
- Like they say, the show must go on.
Build's gotta be finished, it ain't done.
[hammer banging] I ain't going nowhere.
I'm staying here and working, man.
- [Narrator] Under the watchful eyes of primates,
the team of h*m* sapiens exits the garage.
Tomorrow is their last build day,
and it looks like it's coming down
to the survival of the fittest.

The final build day arrives,
and the team's designated worrier is worried.
- More like we're at a disadvantage,
because we're like down a man.
Jesse hasn't been here to help at all.
I don't think we're done.
I don't think we're through the hard part,
'cause I think we got a lot of crap to do.
- [Bill] There is some finished welding to do on this stuff.
- [Narrator] Bill and Rachelle step up the pace
of finishing the cage.
[energetic metal music continues]
[arc welder whirring]
Rachelle finally begins to let out her inner beast.
- No!
- [Bill] No yelling allowed from Rachelle.
- Quiet! - She'll waste
all of her energy and she needs to-
- Shut up! - Get on her welding.
- Yeah, I know. [Bill laughing]
I need that energy. - She needs
more welding energy than you can imagine.
- Yeah. [arc welder whirring]
[energetic metal music continues]
[cage clanging]
Like a glove!
- Yeah.
- [Narrator] The beefed-up leaf springs arrive
and are reinstalled to make this truck 100% great ape.
[energetic metal music continues]
The truck is ready to take on the cage.
[fabricators chattering]
Because the weight front to back is unequal,
the team balances the cage to determine its center.
- Once again. - Okay.
- [Narrator] Once this is done,
the bearings are mounted- - Hey, look at that.
Sweet!
- [Narrator] Then the cage is ready to rage.
- Yep, we got it. - Yeah.
- Let's get this thing going.
- Whoa! [dramatic metal music]
Back it up.
- [Narrator] The truck is taken outside
to introduce the cab to the cage.
[dramatic metal music continues]
- You got like another four inches.
That's it, it can sit down.
[engine revving] [cage clanging]
- [Narrator] The cage fits the truck perfectly.
This monster is going to be a good fit for Queen Koko.
- Man, it only dropped about three inches, two inches.
[dramatic metal music continues]
- [Narrator] With the cage finally mounted onto the truck,
it's time to install the lift system.
[transition whooshing] [bars clinking]
The arms are set onto the pivot points, but they don't fit.
- See, really, all the measurements were based
off of that being-
- Right in the center? - In the center.
- But the only- - But because the cage
ain't perfectly weighted in the center,
we had to move it back.
Otherwise, every time we lift the cage,
it's gonna go [imitates cage tilting]
and stay like this all the way down.
We want it to try to stay as level as possible.
- [Jason] We'll just cut this out,
let it slide onto the shaft
and then we'll cut some big donut rings.
- Yeah, there you go. - Shove 'em back on there
and weld 'em. [upbeat metal music]
- [Narrator] With a few quick cuts and some monster washers,
It's an easy fix.
[arc welder whirring]
[hydraulic arm clanging]
- [Bill] Now we're rocking.
- [Narrator] The arms are secured into place,
and it is time to mount the cylinders.
[upbeat metal music continues]
Jason takes some final measurements
and discovers a serious snafu.
- Back out. - After I calculated
the forces, I said, "Okay, yeah, these cylinders will work."
And then I'll come to find out,
when I started going back over my work,
and I found out that I forgot a decimal point.
- Ah! [ominous electronic music]
- [Narrator] Jason's misplaced dot
could point the team to failure.
The cylinders may not be strong enough to move the cage,
and it's too late to get new ones.
- What are we gonna do? [machinery clanging]
- [Narrator] The right positioning of the cylinders
could compensate for their lack of strength.
- Yeah, as long as you draw a line from here to here,
as long as the line from here to the end of the cylinder
doesn't go below that line, we'll be okay.
- I think it's gonna be pretty tough making it work
with that size cylinder.
- [Narrator] While Jason pushes his pencil
to find the proper position,
Bill has another method.
- Right, underneath- - Okay.
- Just try it.
If it don't work, it don't work.
We can stand around, talk and waste time all day.
We could try 10 different things in that same amount of time
and one of 'em might work.
- [Narrator] Bill steps in
and tries to solve it the old-fashioned way:
[arc welder whirring] He eyeballs it.
[upbeat electronic music]
- Inquiring minds wanna know whether it's right or wrong.
Let's go ahead and tack our bracket, our real bracket.
Let's tack it right there. - All right.
[arc welder whirring]
[metal clanging]
[upbeat electronic music continues]
[arc welder whirring continues]
- [Narrator] Each side of the cage gets its own cylinder.
- Where? - Let's lay this up here.
- [Narrator] The cylinders are in place
and are ready to be tested.
[fabricators chattering]
It's 9:00 PM and the team is into the final stretch.
- 'Cause you gotta get oil in it anyways, don't you?
[dramatic percussive music]
Big Schwag stops by to give the builders some terrible news.
- [laughs] Hey, guys, can I talk to you for a second?
Come on over here for a second, gimme a minute.
- Ah, geez! - I'll get you back to work
real quick, just lemme talk to you for a second here.
- Corn-fed wants this. - Coming!
- I got some bad news and good news.
Bad news is Jesse James, he's not coming back.
He's not gonna be back here tonight.
But the good news is, you guys got three hours left.
I don't want you quitting.
I mean, you came here for one reason,
that was to show, you know, everybody else,
"Hey, man, we got what it takes.
We can do it."
So, you know, let's get going.
Let's do it!
[Bill applauding] - Let's get some oil
in this thing. - Whatever you wanna do.
- All right. [ominous electronic music]
- [Narrator] The hydraulic pump is liquored up
and ready to run.
- It's probably a- - Well, let's just see
if it'll lift the cage,
period. - Okay.
- Ah! - I got a brain fart.
Go away.
- Ah! - That's okay.
Oh, there it goes.
Whoa, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hold on.
[fabricators chattering] - In an attempt
to see if the cylinders will work,
they discover the hydraulic pump doesn't.
- No, it don't- - But there's only two ways
to hook it up, and I tried it both ways,
and it does exactly the same thing.
[ominous electronic music continues]
- [Narrator] Bill makes a few adjustments
and they try the pump again.
- You ready? - Yeah,
I barely touched it. - It should be up.
- [Bill] Make sure there's oil in that thing,
it puked a lot out.
- [Jason] What is up
with this piece of crap? - I have nothing over here.
I have nothing, dude. - Is that one tight?
- Dude, it's almost 10 o'clock.
[ominous electronic music continues]
The only thing we can do is try loosening.
Maybe we got everything too tight.
Right?
[ominous electronic music continues]
- [Narrator] There's no time to get a new pump.
It's fix it or fail.
Fail, fail, fail.
- Ooh! - Nope, see it's-
- It's locking up - It's locked.
- Yeah. - This thing is screwed.
Screwed, screwed. - To go home tonight
with nothing, it's like the worst feeling in the world.
It's just not the build.
I mean, just everything else that happened, you know?
No Jesse, and pretty much, [metal clanging]
we came into this game one man down.
[ominous electronic music continues]
You know, that's an extra helping hand,
so we're done with that.
- [Narrator] It's never a good sign
when your expert resorts to reading the directions.
Four years of sixth grade didn't go wasted on this guy.
- Under the caution troubleshooting chart:
"Motor runs, but solenoid valve does not activate.
Possible cause,
contamination in valve causing spool to stick."
This thing here should work. [melancholic rock music]
There's something wrong inside that manifold,
It said it's the valve.
[metal clanging]
It worked two times.
You know when they make the stuff, they machined it out
and if they didn't clean it really well,
it could have little bits of metal and crud in it and...
But- - There we go,
it's coming out. - There it goes.
There's metal chunks in- - Yeah.
- They probably did not clean this thing.
There is a lot of contaminants in here.
[melancholic rock music continues]
- [Narrator] The final hour has everyone focusing
on their last chance, fixing the pump.
[rotary tool head whirring]
- That's good. - That's it.
- [Bill] Oh, man, it's working good.
Lowered hoses on the bottom.
- [Jason] We might as well leave 'em open and bleed 'em all.
- Well, dude, this is do or die right now.
- [Jason] Are we finished filling the tank up?
- Yeah? - You mean outside?
- Dude, this is so down to the wire.
[laughs] I can't believe it.
[machinery whirring] [hammer banging]
- Right there- - I can't find
the other bolt. - Bolt's down there.
- There it is, there it is, there it is.
You ready?
Ready? - Yeah.
[hydraulic pump squealing]
- On the top. - Top!
- It's coming out the top. - That's it.
- Yeah? - We're good!
Hook it up! - We need to bleed it.
- [Narrator] 10 minutes left, and the pump is pumping fluid.
- That's right. - Yeah.
- [Narrator] They've run outta time.
The gorillamobile needs to test successfully,
or this bunch of bananas will fail.
[hydraulic pump squealing]
- All right? - Okay.
You know what?
The door's on- - Up, up, and stop!
[hydraulic pump squealing]
The sharp corner of the back cage
keeps it from clearing the back edge!
[hydraulic pump squealing continues]
- Hey, we could cut out a channel,
just like we did to the front, and it'll work.
We can cut it out with a plasma cutter-
- I'll cut it now. - Cut it off.
- You go- - Okay, let's cut it off.
- Well, it was off. - Okay, go.
[upbeat metal music]
- He's not gonna need that. [plasma cutter whirring]
[hammer banging] [metal clanging]
- Is that it? - Oh, there we go!
[hydraulic pump squealing] [metal clanging]
Whoa! [laughs] - There it is!
[hydraulic pump squealing] There you guys go.
- Yeah! - Whoa!
- Yeah, baby! [fabricators cheering]
- [Narrator] The cage can go down,
but will it go up? - Try and get
the pin outta there. - No, with that-
[hydraulic pump squealing] - Whoa!

- Yeah. - Yeah!
