[instrumental music]

Help ya?

Know anything about bicycles?

Afraid not.

You heading toward Jamestown?

Yes, I am, but..

Hop in.

I don't usually pick up riders.

But I don't think you'd hurt me.

Would ya?

Come on.

I'm Susan Margold. I'm from Alaina.

Alaina, that's a long way to bicycle.

Well, I go to an arts and crafts school in Jamestown.

I cycle over three times a week.

Small overhead, good exercise.

You don't sound very excited about it.

Well, Jamestown is about as far as I've gotten in my life.

My folks promised to take me to Europe next year, but..

Yeah. You'd like to travel all by yourself, huh?

Why don't you stay with me?

What do you say, hmm?

Wanna ride cross country first class?

Must be nice to be able to afford it.

No problem.

Nah, boost a few stores.

Maybe knock off a bank.

Hey, you know something? We'd make a great team.

'Hmm, pretty girl like you.'

'You could draw all the attention.'

I wouldn't even need a g*n.

You are joking.

Aren't you?

You want out?

[instrumental music]

Unit 15 to station.

'Go ahead, fifteen.'

I've got a speeder in sight on Highway 17.

New York license 5 Frank 9-8-3-6.

Not in my hot sheet.

Please check stolen reports and advise.

Come over here.

[man on radio] 'We have no stolen report on vehicle you described.'

Ten-four. I'm pulling them over on a speeding violation.

[male over radio] 'Roger, 15.'

[siren wailing]

Good morning.

May I see your driver's license?

Certainly, officer.

I'd like to call your attention to the fact that the speed limit

on this road is posted at 25 miles an hour.

Oh, I'm sorry, officer, I guess I got careless.

I usually don't.

I think we'll let you off with a warning this time.

Thanks a lot, officer. I really appreciate that.

I don't know what got into me.

Are you alright? Are you sure?

Is there anything I can do?

No, thank you.

Oh, that's a nice-looking watch you got.

Oh, thanks. My daughter gave it to me.

Had a big birthday party just before I came on duty.

Quite a feed, I think I ate too much.

There's some pills in the glove compartment.

Would you get them for me please?

Thank you.

[man over radio] 'Station to Unit 15.'

- 'Come in, 15.' - 15, go ahead.

'Reference to your last call.'

'Owner just reported vehicle stolen 10:30 a.m. this date.'

[dramatic music]

Don't let him die. Let me help him.

Get back in the car.

[male narrator] "The FBI."

A Quinn Martin production.

Starring, Efrem Zimbalist Jr.

Also starring, Philip Abbott..

William Reynolds.

With guest stars, Robert Drivas..

Rick Kelman.

Tonight's episode, "The Corruptor."

[instrumental music]

[siren wailing]

[male narrator] Following the brutal sh**ting

of a New York state policeman, who was able to describe

his assailant before lapsing into a coma.

The assailant's car was discovered abandoned

on a secondary road in Pennsylvania.

Because the g*nman had driven

the stolen car across state lines.

the FBI entered the case.

Agents arrived at the scene

and immediately joined state police officers

in a search of the area.

No, he never touched me.

After he abandoned the car

he had me go into the woods with him.

He said he was going to keep me as a hostage.

Take your time.

After a ways, he told me to turn around.

Thought he changed his mind, and was going to k*ll me.

I waited, then turned.

He was gone.

And he didn't give you a name or any idea where he was going?

No name.

He said something about going across the country

but I thought he was joking.

Do you think you could describe him to one of our artists?

Easily.

I was never so frightened in my life.

Miss Margold, your parents are outside.

Agents processing the car found some latents.

We sent them on to the identification division

to check against the prints of bureau fugitives.

We also found a, a large supply

'of Aspirin in the glove compartment.'

That confirms what miss Margold stated.

He's in some kind of severe pain.

There was also report of a pick-up truck stolen

from the same area we found the girl.

And an eye witness who saw a man

who looked like our subject drive it away.

'We entered the license in the NCIC.'

Thank you.

Excuse me, sir.

I was wondering if you needed any help.

'Waiting tables, washing dishes.'

Why don't you leave your name and telephone number?

Maybe something will come up soon, huh?

Here's a number of a friend that can get in touch with me.

Thank you.

[Dree Foster] 'Hey, kid.'

You hungry?

Yeah, I really am.

Hey.

Another T-Bone medium.

- You on the road? - Yeah, but I'm not a hobo.

- I'm just.. - Yeah, I know.

First time away from home

'and off to see the big wide wonderful world.'

Let me tell you something.

It's nothing.

'Unless you have money.'

This is called the number.

Watch.

Okay, you guys, come out of there.

Come on, come on, let's go.

'Right. Very very nice.'

Empty that.

Good. Now on the counter.

Very very nice. Okay, car keys and currency on the counter.

Come on.

Good.

Very nice.

Look out!

Get the keys and the money.

Who owns that shiny green car out there?

It's mine.

Get the keys.

Okay, let's go.

Let's go.

[instrumental music]

Are you sick?

That's alright. Don't be ashamed.

Never saw a man shot before.

You think he's dead?

Nah, those truck drivers are tough.

Take more than a b*llet in the shoulder.

Here.

This is half of what I got. Goodbye.

'Good luck.'

What, you getting rid of me?

'What'd I do? Something wrong?'

Hey, you don't wanna get involved with someone like me.

You're just a kid.

Hey, wait a minute. I can take care of myself.

I took care of myself back at that diner, didn't I?

Well, I guess I could use a partner.

Someone with nerve.

Get out of here.

You don't wanna get involved with me.

I got thousands of miles to cover.

You know what I got at the end of it?

Bet, you don't know.

- I got a mission. - Mission?

Something I gotta do. And I don't care what it costs.

Well?

Said you needed help.

Get that briefcase.

Open it.

You like it?

Oh, man. Oh, man.

It's yours.

You're kidding.

Know how to use a g*n?

Yeah, I..

No, not really.

You'll learn.

[instrumental music]

And the, the kid who helped him

was about 19, and maybe, maybe six feet tall.

And.. I guess I can't remember much else.

Did you get any background information from him

when he applied for the job?

Well, when he came in, uh..

[telephone ringing]

Excuse me.

Hello. Who?

Oh, yeah, yeah, just a minute.

Inspector, it's your office.

Thank you.

Erskine. Put him on.

What's the situation out there, Lewis?

We found the pick-up truck

the subject stole in Pennsylvania.

He held up this diner

and escaped in one of the customer's cars

with a young man he apparently just met here.

Alright, Lewis, keep me informed.

I'm sorry, inspector, with all the excitement

I forgot he left this.

Thank you very much.

Tom Colby just called, uh..

We found the car the subject stole from the parking lot.

[Colby] 'We found a few latents.'

[Erskine] 'Any other tire impressions?'

'None that we could find, they probably walked up to the road.'

It smells like oil of cloves.

Better get it back to the lab for confirmation.

How long you guys been together?

We met George at a shelter house in Indianapolis.

About two weeks ago.

Hey, George, sure glad you came back for us.

What's it like on a job

when-when you use one of these for the first time?

[exhales sharply] You ever play baseball?

See that ball going 300 feet.

You ever bowl? You know what it's like to cop a strike?

That's the power.

How many jobs you pulled?

Well, when you've done as many as I have

you don't talk about it.

But I'll tell you one thing.

I've lived more in the last ten years

than most people live a lifetime.

Fast.

Yep, 300 horses under you

'and one of those in your hand.'

Man, you got the world.

Well, Mickey, what do you say?

I don't know.

Alright, come on.

- Come on. - Okay.

Hey, George tells us you got something big planned.

You can use partners.

No chance.

Can't you use us?

Too inexperienced.

Most you guys ever did was play hooky, right?

Give us a chance.

Can you take orders?

- Yes, sir. - Yes, sir.

Okay.

Try out in rehearsal before the big job.

Right.

Well, do we get something like that?

Sure. Fire power for everybody.

No. Hey, no, that one's off limits.

One for you.

- Alright. - One for you.

[intense music]

[female #1] 'I'm sorry you had so much'

'trouble reaching me.'

I-I was staying with a friend in Cleveland. I just got back.

You say that-that George Arbor left my telephone number.

Ah, it follows.

Why do you say that?

Well, he was just-just bumming around the country.

He said he was from Parmadales, Indiana.

I guess I was just the only one in the area

he knew to use for an answering service.

Where did you meet him?

Here.

I usually have lunch here.

We brown bagged it, chatted.

That went on for, oh, about a week.

Before he finally got up enough nerve to ask me for a date.

And you accepted?

Well, he looked lonely and harmless.

So I cooked him a dinner.

It was the biggest mistake I ever made.

Well, I couldn't get rid of him. He-he kept calling.

I kept telling him I wasn't interested.

But he wouldn't listen.

He kept saying, "I'll make you love me

if I have to stay in this town the rest of my life."

When was the last time you heard from him?

It was, uh, just before he got involved in that diner robbery.

I wouldn't know how to reach him though, I..

I never did know where he stayed.

If he contacts you again

would you call us please?

How you feeling?

The whole back of my head is coming off.

Where are the other guys?

In the room.

My tooth is always giving me trouble and..

...when that truck driver hit me in the mouth

he broke the tooth off and laid everything bare.

Let me take you to the dentist.

No, no dentist.

My father almost died in a dentist chair, dentist!

He started to hemorrhage when they pulled the tooth.

His heart almost gave out.

Well, that couldn't happen today.

Look let me just take you. They'll take care of you.

No, I said no dentist.

Talk about something else. Anything.

What do you want me to say?

Aren't you curious about where we're going?

You should be curious.

We're going to see my kid bother.

He k*lled a cop.

'I gotta help him.'

You gonna try and break him out?

I'm gonna break him out.

'Tried to hold up a store.'

Shouldn't have lost his head and burned that cop.

But what can I do, huh? He's my kid brother, right?

He's-he's not much older than you are.

I gotta help him.

Hey, Del.

Del, you okay?

Acting just like a kid, huh?

The other day when you told me not to be ashamed

when I was feeling kinda sick.

There's times everybody needs help.

You're a good kid.

Yeah.

It's gonna be tough trying to get my brother out.

It's gonna take a lot of nerve.

- Are you with me? - Yeah.

Stupid.

To had to k*ll that cop. Stupid.

But what can I do? He's my brother.

Gotta save him.

He's depending on me.

[intense music]

[intercom buzzing]

Yes. Yes.

Mr. Ward, inspector.

Put it on the speaker, Dan.

Yes, Art.

Oh, Lou, the Indianapolis office has traced George Arbor.

He's from Parmadales alright.

His parents say he left home about a month ago.

They haven't heard from him since.

They've given agents photos of him.

Did he have an arrest record?

None that his local police are aware of.

He was a good student in school. Stayed clear of trouble.

He left home a few weeks ago on an urge to go adventuring.

Oh, Lewis, I've just been handed a lab report

on that cotton swabbing found in the last car stolen

by the subject.

You were right.

The cotton was saturated with oil of cloves.

A solution used to relieve toothaches.

We'll send out fliers to dentists and pharmacies.

[intercom buzzing]

Yes?

It's Muriel Davis.

Let me get back to you, Art.

Miss Davis, this is Inspector Erskine.

George Arbor just called me. He's in Lordston, Indiana.

He wanted me to come there.

Said he could really show me a good time

because he was in tight with some big time operator.

'And he had money.'

Did he give you an address or phone number?

No, he just said he'd call soon.

Oh, he did say that he and a friend

had to go to The Grovenor.

Did he say where that was?

No, he didn't. I'll let you know if he calls again.

Thank you, Miss Davis.

Dan, call the Indianapolis office.

Find out if there's a place called

"The Grovenor" in Lordston.

Alright.

Get me the Indianapolis office.

We'll go in two at a time.

Remember the manager's office is in the mezzanine.

Don't forget the..

Del, are you alright?

Let me take you to a dentist.

[intense music]

[music continues]

Thank you.

Hey, hold on.

She said the doctor will be back in a few minutes.

Worried about those guys.

They'll be alright.

They wouldn't do anything without you.

[intense music]

[music continues]

Six to one.

Go ahead.

The pair in the corner by the ladder.

'They don't match our subject's description.'

'But one is definitely armed.'

Alright, Tom.

This is Unit One, Inspector Erskine.

On surveillance at the Grovenor theatre.

We have two men near the box office

one of them definitely armed.

Call the police ask them to send a cruiser right away.

I'll take that, mister.

[Tom] Freeze!

Drop 'em!

Could you step on the lobby, please, sir?

Put your hands behind your head.

Face the booth.

[intense music]

[siren wailing]

We didn't mean it.

Tooth's broken off at the gum line.

I'm gonna have to take that root out.

Should've had this taken care of before.

Never mind the lecture. Just do it.

Excuse me a moment.

What's that?

I'm giving you a general anesthetic.

Hey, what is this?

Come on, I gotta get you out of here.

I think they called the FBI.

[instrumental music]

That's the card he filled out.

Have Ident check this for fingerprints.

And maybe the lab can tell us something about the handwriting.

- What was his condition? - Very bad.

He'll be in constant agony until he receives treatment.

Thank you very much.

Oh, I interviewed the two boys

who tried to hold up the theatre.

Michael Nabors and Royal Shean.

Both from Alexandria, Virginia, both 18.

No previous arrest record.

They implicated both Arbor and our subject.

They said they were told to commit the robbery

as kind of an initiation.

Did they identify the subject as Quinland?

No, they confirmed his description

but they knew him only as Del, nothing more.

I suppose he'll stay away from dentists from now on.

Hmm. And vice versa.

[intense music]

I thought I ran a bummer in the restaurant.

Some guy built like a plainclothesman

came up back at me.

'Ha ha. Turned out he's just waiting for my seat.'

Beat it.

What?

I said beat it.

I don't understand.

You understand English, don't you?

I don't want you around me anymore.

Go ahead. Got. Beat it.

Well, what'd I do?

Come on, Del, just tell me what I've done.

It's not what you've done. It's what I've done.

I destroy everything I touch.

Those kids, you.

My brother.

Grant didn't wanna

pull that hold-up.

I talked to him, you know, the way I talk to everybody.

He listened and..

Went along.

He didn't k*ll that cop.

I did.

Del, I..

He loved music. Do you know that?

Sure.

He could play almost every instrument.

He wanted to make it his life.

I took all that away from him.

I took that.

Get out.

- No, man, I'm not-- - Get out!

[tires screeching]

[dramatic music]

Where did the informant spot Arbor?

In a coffee shop about 1:30 this morning.

Said he recognized him from a newspaper photo.

Did the informant follow Arbor?

No.

Said he just walked to a park across the street.

[woman on radio] 'Control to Unit One.'

One, go ahead.

'Has Inspector Erskine arrived yet?'

This is Erskine.

'Stand by, please.'

Lewis, I have some additional information.

'The New York office arrested a fence named Shaun Genero'

on an unlawful flight burglary warrant.

He admitted selling firearms two weeks ago

to a man calling himself Mark Quinland.

Who also fits our subject's description.

Did he have any idea where Quinland is from?

He said he didn't.

But whoever Quinland is, we'd better find him soon.

Genero said his sale also included

some hand grenades.

[g*nshots]

[g*nshots]

That's him.

I recognized him from a newspaper photo.

He walked in here and he said "This is a hold-up."

'I saw it coming while he was still outside.'

'He looked scared silly.'

That's the kind to be afraid of.

The scared ones.

Anything will set them off.

Did you see the motorcycle hit him?

Yeah. He limped out of sight around the corner.

Thank you very much.

The Whiteside Emergency Hospital just called.

A man fitting George Arbor's description asked for treatment.

He has a dislocated knee he claims

he got falling down some stairs.

Whiteside Emergency?

Uh, that's just a few minutes from here.

- Notify the police. - Right.

Are you the doctor?

[grunting]

Alright, doctor.

[instrumental music]

You understand you don't have to say anything.

And you can call a lawyer if you wish.

Del shouldn't have run out on me.

What's his full name?

Fisher.

Delmar Fisher.

'At least that's what he told me.'

I'm in bad trouble, aren't I?

You might say.

My parents have to know?

They've already been notified.

Inspector, look I've cooperated with you guys

do something for me, will you?

'Don't let my folks see me.'

It's up you.

They've always been so good to me.

I don't think I could face 'em.

Where was Fisher going?

I don't know, he cut me out of it.

It's pretty heavy stuff, he..

...said his brother had m*rder*d a policeman.

He was going to break him out.

He's heavily armed, isn't he?

Yeah, he's got a suitcase full of g*ns and ammunition.

How many hand grenades?

A whole satchel full.

[intense music]

Oh, Lou..

The bureau just called.

They positively identified our subject

from the latent prints on the stolen cars he abandoned.

His true name is Dree Victor Foster.

And the name Delmar Fisher also checks as an alias

he's used in the past.

San Francisco has a UFAP m*rder case on him and, uh..

I just received a follow up teletype on a brother

Grant Foster, who was convicted in a m*rder of a police officer

in Oakport, Arizona last January.

He's due to be sentenced today.

According to testimony Dree was also involved

in that k*lling.

- Tell Oakport what we have. - Yes, sir.

[intense music]

- Inspector Erskine. - Sheriff.

Welcome to Oakport.

I understand the judge has postponed sentencing.

- That's right. - Any word on Dree Foster?

- Not as yet-- - Sheriff!

Listen, and I'm not gonna repeat this.

You got until 12:30.

I want my brother here without chains of handcuffs.

Do you understand?

[Foster on speaker] 'And a car downstairs'

'with a full tank of gas.'

Now, Foster, you listen to me.

[Dree Foster] No, you listen!

Sheriff, this is Julius Packer.

'It's true.'

'He's holding myself'

and four woman employees hostage.

Okay, now you got 29 minutes, huh.

Or I pull the pin on this grenade.

Call me back when you got an answer.

I'll contact the building office and have it evacuated.

Alright, set up roadblocks all around that area

and don't let any pedestrians or vehicles

come anywhere near that building.

Where is the building?

It's just a block down the street.

Packer's office on the second floor.

Thanks, sheriff.

[telephone ringing]

Yeah?

Foster, this is Inspector Erskine, FBI.

I'd like to talk to you.

I'll be alone and unarmed.

Sure, come up and join the party.

Now, the authorities refuse to release Grant Foster.

I'm not surprised.

The, uh..

The hospital's been alerted.

I'm going up.

[intense music]

[clanks]

I have two little girls at home.

Come in.

Get over in there.

He pulled the pin.

'The grenade is armed.'

They're not gonna release my brother, are they?

'He'd have been here by now, right?'

Listen to me, Foster.

'This people aren't to blame'

'for what happened to your brother.'

Let them go. I'll stay.

That'd be making it easy. Wouldn't it?

Not exactly.

I value my life too.

You got nerve.

You know, in a way I wish we were

on the same side of the fence.

We can be.

No.

No deal.

Besides, time's running out.

For all of us.

[telephone ringing]

Hello.

Dree.

Grant. Where are you?

Well, I'm in custody, where I should be.

- Grant, I.. - 'No, Dree!'

Don't say anything else.

Look, you've already ruined both of our lives.

'What else do you want?'

Hey..

Grant, I was just trying to make it up to you.

How? By more k*lling?

'Look, Dree, just let those people go.'

Did you hear me, Dree? I don't want any part of you.

'Now, just go away, and don't hurt anyone else.'

I was only trying to help you out.

Let me have the grenade.

[woman screams]

Everybody get out!

[groans]

[groans]

[expl*si*n]

Lou!

- You alright? - Yeah.

[instrumental music]

- For you, inspector. - Oh, thank you.

Erskine. Yes, Art.

I just got the news on Foster's capture. Good work, Lewis.

Thank you.

How are you?

I'm fine.

I'm just glad we got him before..

Before it was any worse.

[male narrator] Dree Victor Foster was tried and convicted

by the state of Arizona for m*rder

and sentenced to a penitentiary.

New York authorities placed a detainer against Foster

for the attempted m*rder of the state police officer.

Foster also was convicted on federal charges

of interstate car theft, kidnapping

and assaulting a federal officer.

George Arbor, Michael Nabors and Royal Shean

were convicted in state court of attempted armed robbery

and sentenced to reformatories.

[theme music]
