[Rivers whistling]
[whistling]
[engine revving]
[whistles]
Let's chow.
[birds chirping]
[dramatic music]
[crackling]
Fire! Get the shovels.
'On the double.'
[clamoring]
[music continues]
Lacy, stop!
[music continues]
[engine revving]
Hit him!
[g*nshots]
[music continues]
Why did you hold your fire?
You almost got both of us k*lled.
[grunts]
That guard was always pretty decent to me.
Guess I'm gettin' old.

Tonight's episode, "The Last Job."
[instrumental music]
On June 30th, Michael Lacy, a legendary criminal
escaped from a prison work project near McComb, Louisiana.
The stolen car used by the fugitive and his accomplice
was found abandoned in Arkansas.
Since the escapee crossed state lines
Louisiana authorities requested the FBI
to conduct an unlawful flight investigation.
[Lewis] '"Michael 'Doc' Lacy."'
First arrest at 16 for car theft.
First armed robbery at 18.
"expl*sives expert."
Mastermind of a series of robberies
that netted close to a million dollars.
All before the age of 26.
He shot a policeman a year after that.
I notice you assisted in his arrest, Al.
Yes, sir. It was on an unlawful flight warrant.
It was in, uh, 1944.
He's been in prison for 27 years.
What kind of a record did he have there?
Very rebellious at first.
He attempted a couple of escapes.
He spent a good deal of time in solitary confinement.
But during the last ten years, a model prisoner.
And possibly due to his health.
He developed a, a heart condition.
The identification division matched some latents
from the, uh, suspect's car
with the fingerprint record of Gerald Rivers.
'The wounded guard identified Rivers'
'as the man who helped Lacy escape.'
And Rivers has been around.
He is a former inmate at the prison.
He served a sentence for armed robbery.
We'll bring all officers in the South
and Midwest up to date on him.
What about Lacy?
Well, most of his friends are
either in prison or deceased.
His file shows he was married in 1936.
[Lewis] 'His wife left him six years later and dropped out of sight.'
We're trying to locate her now.
I'd like to get down to McComb
where I can interview some of the inmates.
I'm sure Rivers didn't get Lacy out just for friendship.
They probably have a job planned.
[instrumental music]
[Lacy coughing]
What do you think?
[clears throat]
[Lacy coughs]
What's the matter with you, old man?
Car sick.
You don't spend 27 years in prison
and then take that long a ride like it was yesterday.
[clears throat]
Can you ride a little smoother now..
The bridge.
What about it?
Can you blow it?
You sure you've told me all I ought to know?
That's all there is.
It's a army payroll worth over a million..
...delivered to some base about 30 miles after the boondocks.
What about the security?
Two men will ride with the money
and the second car follows the first with four guards.
We can't charge 'em 'cause they got too much fire power.
Too much radio.
If we could just blow the bridge as they're crossing it..
Hm. Not interesting.
I told you not to waste time with him.
He just wants to lay down and die.
No, just rest.
Doc, how can you rest?
Every cop in the country is lookin' for you.
So I'll go to another country.
Look, there ain't any place as good to rest without money.
You and me had a deal.
You said you're in if I busted you out of that camp.
[Eugene] 'You know I used to read about you when I was a kid.'
I thought you made Dillinger
look like a Sunday school teacher.
But he didn't have it anymore.
I don't think he ever did.
[chuckles]
I guess it's been a long time
since you've seen a woman, Mr. Lacy.
- You remind me of someone. - Who?
She didn't want to run with thieves either.
She got hooked.
Now, blowing that bridge would be like
using an elephant g*n on a mouse.
You'd be pickin' up pieces of that payroll for a month.
You got a better idea?
[instrumental music]
What are you thinkin' about?
At the tunnel we came through on the way out here.
That's where we'll have them, at the tunnel.
I knew you'd figure it out, Doc.
- You contact my people? - I'm workin' on it.
Where is the front money?
And nobody on my back, I'll go where I want.
Doc, that payroll moves in three days.
Are you in?
You be ready.
[music continues]
Alright, thank you.
Who's next?
"Barton Willis," serving a lifetime for m*rder.
He might know something, he shared a cell with Rivers.
[grunts]
I'll send him in.
[instrumental music]
Inspector Erskine, FBI. Like to talk to you, Willis.
No hacks?
It's just the two of us, sit down.
I know they don't let you wear a g*n in here.
You're my ticket out, inspector.
[dramatic music]
- Now, why don't we talk? - Why not?
You did time with Jerry Rivers.
You're looking for him?
Why don't you try the state of Washington?
Where in Washington?
I don't know.
He said he had a...caper plan
a...payroll heist.
What kind of payroll?
I don't know. He didn't say.
If I knew, I'd tell you.
I used to like Rivers.
But he is outside now.
[sighs]
Look, I'm tired. I wanna go to my cell.
Alright, go ahead.
Guards!
I..
I heard Rivers broke out Doc Lacy.
They make a good team. Make lots of dough.
Me? I got to stay here.
[instrumental music]
[Lacy] 'Alright, now let's talk about the expl*sives.'
It's going to take a lot of it. Can you buy it?
I don't have any contacts, we'll have to steal them.
Maybe a army ammunitions depot or a manufacture.
It shouldn't be too hard.
Anything else you need, old man?
That'll wrap it up.
It's a good plan.
He don't look too happy about it to me.
I was thinking about those guards in that second jeep.
Possibility they'll get buried in that tunnel.
[thuds]
Oh, it's Mary.
Hello, babe.
- Anything happening in town? - No, it's quiet.
- Any mail? - Oh, yeah. Here.
Well, would you look at this.
That'll make you happy, old man.
'You can still grab the headlines.'
Why should anybody be happy about being hunted?
Uh. Was that somethin' about me?
It's from a friend of mine..
...he located your son.
Yeah, I know Rivers, but I haven't seen him in years.
You saw him two weeks ago.
'Just before he helped Michael Lacy break out of prison.'
You're trying to tie me in with that?
[scoffs] Oh!
Papers, Dorel. Identification.
Look, I'm no paper man. I gave that up a long time ago.
Now I don't know where Lacy is.
He's somewhere here in Washington.
Point is, he's k*lled before
and unless we find him, he will probably k*ll again.
Have you thought about that?
I..
...made up a standard identification line
driver's license, social security.
Rivers never told me about Lacy and that's the truth.
But the date of birth was for a man about his age.
What name did you put on them?
Potter. Austin Potter. That's all I know.
I made the cards, Rivers paid me
he told me nothing else.
Was Rivers alone?
No, he had a guy with him
about his age, dark hair.
I never did learn his name.
See if any of these men look familiar to you.
That's him.
Alright, that'll be all for now.
"Eugene Arthur Bradshaw," record for felony, as*ault
and attempted m*rder.
Dan, have that name, uh, Austin Potter
entered in the NCIC
and bring the bureau up to date on what we have.
Teletype from the bureau on Lacy.
Hmph!
Lacy had a son about six at the time he entered prison.
Yes, they haven't been able to locate him yet
but he is believed to be living somewhere in the south west.
- And nothing on his wife? - Not yet.
[instrumental music]
Yes?
Gary?
May I come in, son?
[music continues]
What do you want?
Could I sit down a minute? I have come a long way.
Why did you come here?
Uh..
To see you again.
And to find your mother.
Can you help me?
You're not in a position to ask for favors.
To me you're just a..
...a thief wanted by the police.
[music continues]
I'll give you a 10 minute head start before I call 'em.
[sighs]
[music continues]
You seem smaller than I remember.
Oh, I wasn't sure you'd have any memories.
A few..
...that Christmas Eve you took me downtown.
I saw the old man with a cup freezing in the corner.
I remember I started crying when you..
...told me he was blind.
[chuckles] I couldn't get you to stop crying
until I bought all his pencils.
What do you want with mother?
To see her one last time.
I don't know where she is.
She left me with Aunt Hester when I was about eight.
Mom was ill.
I guess she felt she couldn't care for me properly.
I don't think that was the whole reason.
She wanted to give you every chance
so you couldn't be connected with my name.
I saw her, heard from her occasionally.
When was the last time?
About a year ago, I got this letter.
'Postmark San Francisco.'
There's no return address.
I tried to find her. No luck.
"It's ironic that I'm resting where I once worked.
"Where your father and I met.
"I won't tell you where that is
"because I want you to
"live your own life and not worry about me.
Love, mom."
"I'm resting where I once worked."
Where is it?
Nancy..
Um, this is--
Michael King, I handle insurance.
Just been transferred to this area.
Gary and I are old friends but he's still a tough sale.
Can we make it up to you with some coffee.
Well, he has to be going.
Didn't you say something about a meeting?
Yes. Thanks anyway.
This is our brood, Gail and Jackie.
Gail.
You remind me of my daddy.
Jackie.
[instrumental music]
- Bye. - Bye.
Strange man.
Yeah, real strange.
[intense music]
Just a minute there.
I'm no burglar, officer.
I.. My heart..
Why don't you sit down over here, sir?
Right over here.
Do you have any identification?
Could you take it out of the wallet please?
This is Six to Control.
[woman on radio] 'Go ahead, Six.'
Give me a check through NCIC
'Washington State driver's license'
'number F, Francis'
Last name Potter, first name Austin.
I was just trying to find help officer.
I would like to get home.
[woman on radio] 'Control to Six'
Six, go ahead.
'Re, your request Austin Potter.'
'NCIC reports Potter as alias'
'of Michael Lacy, escapee of McComb State Prison.'
[g*nsh*t]
[indistinct radio chatter]
'Consider Lacy armed and dangerous.'
'Six, report your location.'
'Do you read, Six? Report your location.'
[instrumental music]
The cab driver says he brought Lacy to this house.
He must've been mistaken.
And a policeman was shot less than a block from here.
'We're trying to stop him, Mr. Burgess
'before he hurts someone else.'
He was here.
I thought I'd save my children the embarrassment
of knowing that he was related to us.
You mind telling me why he came here?
To find my mother.
I don't know where she is, but I showed him that letter.
Lou?
Excuse me.
Word just came in from the Portland Office
an informant said he saw both Rivers and Bradshaw there.
- How long ago? - This morning.
I didn't think you were going to make it, old man.
This is Al Naylor, he's a friend of mine.
Figured we might need some help.
Hm, what's the story?
Right there.
'Enough stuff in there to blow up the whole city.'
Got an inside man?
Paid off and waiting.
The informant saw Rivers and Bradshaw
in a bar on the east side, they were talking to a third man.
Have you identified him?
No, but the informant got a good look at him.
I have agents in the bar right now trying to find out
who he is.
[intense music]
[music continues]
[music continues]
That's it.
[music continues]
Yes, alright, Dan. Yes, nice work.
Oh, inspector, we know who that third man is.
Enos Riley, he's a guard at the Donnelly Chemical Company.
Good. Call the head of security there, alert him the situation
and tell him we're on our way.
[intense music]
[engine revving]
[alarm blaring]
[tires screeching]
Hold it! Stop! We lost Naylor!
Forget him.
[tires screeching]
[music continues]
[ringing continues]
We detained Riley. I've got him in my office.
He evidently admitted some thieves
who raided the magazines. We weren't in time to stop them.
You better have a talk with him.
They got away before we arrived. All but one.
- Where's he? - Holed up in a magazine.
Hop in.
[tires screeching]
[intense music]
He's holding nitroglycerin.
Enough to blow up half this district.
You can't go up there.
Well, if we don't do something he's gonna drop it.
[music continues]
What's your name?
Stay back.
Look, I-I wanna help you.
You've been hurt. You need a doctor.
- 'Stay back.' - Okay.
I want a car and I want a clear way outta here.
But you can't make it to the car.
[scoffs] 'You can't even make it down these steps.'
I'll tell you what?
Why don't you let us get you to the hospital?
[music continues]
[instrumental music]
Anything you say can be used against you.
You can call a lawyer if you wish.
They didn't say anything to me about what they had planned.
I didn't ask.
What do they say to each other?
They talked about the haul. Supposed to be over a million.
Where was this supposed to take place?
I don't know.
The only place I ever heard mentioned was San Francisco.
Lacy said he might go there before the caper.
The others didn't like it, they said
it was too close to the deadline.
When's the deadline?
Tomorrow.
[door opens]
Agent's found a truck abandoned near Trenton, Washington
that may have been used by our suspects.
There was a crate-top left inside
with the Donnelly Chemical Company label on it.
Did they find anything else?
No, just the, uh, tire impressions around the truck
that indicated they were switching vehicles.
Any more information on Lacy's wife?
San Francisco office believe
they've located her most recent employer.
Alert Mr. Ward and tell him Tom and I are leaving
for San Francisco.
[dramatic music]
I'm so tired of waiting.
We need some action.
I mean real action.
You know, would it be great
if a couple of those guards were left kickin' tomorrow
and we could have ourselves a real firefight?
Uh..
Where you going?
To take a walk.
Lacy?
This, uh, plan of yours..
It's worked out perfect, isn't it?
I mean, there's nothing that should go wrong.
What I mean is that, uh, I know nothing's perfect. I know that.
Uh, what I mean is that--
What you mean is you're a two-bit punk
who'd got stuck at the wrong ballgame.
'You're in this all the way.
You freeze up tomorrow and I'll k*ll you.
[dramatic music]
Take it easy.
[music continues]
[chuckles] Won't your boyfriend miss you?
No, I don't think he wants me to see him the way he is now.
Hm.
Uh, Bible.
I took to carrying it when I was in prison.
Thought it might get me time off for good behavior.
No.
No, you're thinking about those soldiers
you're gonna k*ll tomorrow.
And you hate it as much as I do.
Why do you always look at me like that?
What do you see?
Somebody else who let her life
be ruined by a thief.
What can I do?
I love him.
Love yourself more.
Here, get out of this while you can.
But you won't, will you?
I feel sorry for you.
I'll see you tomorrow.
[music continues]
[Paree] 'Yes, that looks like Mrs. Rogers.'
Of course she was older when she worked for us.
How long did she work for you, Mr. Paree?
Well, she was out housekeeper for about, uh, 12 years
until last year, when she became ill.
Were you ware that Rogers was not a real name?
Yes, a few days after we hired her
she admitted to us that she had been married
to a notorious criminal, a, uh, Doc Lacy.
There was no need for her to tell us
but she had the strongest sense of honor
of anyone I've ever known.
And when was the last item you saw her?
'Well, it was a about a year ago.'
My wife and I noticed that she wasn't well.
We offered to help in any way we could, but she refused.
A few days later, she disappeared.
Did she leave any word or forwarding address?
No.
No, just a note, uh, apologizing
saying she didn't want to to become a burden.
And you never heard from her again?
No.
Although our cook did hear
that she was in a local nursing home.
Can you recall the name of the home?
No, she never mentioned it.
Do you mind if we speak to your cook?
Well, it's her day off, but, uh..
Perhaps I can reach her.
[instrumental music]
[breathing heavily]
[music continues]
Mike?
Hi.
- Is it you? - Yes...yeah.
I heard you were free.
How did you find me?
I did, that's all counts.
It's like a dream.
[music continues]
You're old.
You too.
Does it matter?
No.
I forgot you a long time ago.
[music continues]
What do you want?
I want to tell you I'm sorry.
I want to ask you to forgive me.
You're going to be alright.
I'm going to see to it.
No, I'm not.
I've got a year.
I may hang on a little longer.
It's never easy.
I'm gonna make it easier.
I'm gonna send you some money.
I'm gonna send you a lot of money.
'Enough to get you to the best hospital.'
Mike...no.
No more. Oh, go away.
Please, go away. Leave me in peace.
[breathing heavily]
Mike?
It was all such a waste.
Not for me..
...for you.
There wasn't a mountain you couldn't have climbed.
[instrumental music]
Honey..
[sobbing] Honey.
[whimpers]
[engine revving]
[man on radio] 'SA-5.'
Go ahead.
'Units two and eight have reached'
'the Bay Vista Convalescent home.'
'The director there reported that'
'a man of Michael Lacy's description'
'was there late this afternoon.'
Did they identify the car?
'No, sir.'
'Agents interviewed his wife'
'but she couldn't provide any information.'
'We've alerted all units and the local authorities.'
We're on our way to the convalescent home.
- Keep me advised. - 'Ten-four.'
[dramatic music]
What's wrong?
[panting] I'm alright.
Do you want a doctor?
No, no.
I'll just rest till then.
Let me help you inside.
[woman on PA] 'Final call for flight 74 for Los Angeles'
'boarding at 8:03.'
[grunts]
[music continues]
Are you sure you don't want a doctor?
No.
No, please..
I'll be alright.
I'll be right back.
[woman on PA] 'Attention please.'
'Last call for passengers for Flight 17.'
'Flight 17 is now boarding.'
[intense music]
Well, he was right there.
[music continues]
I just knew you'd make it.
Let's go.
[intense music]
What's the matter?
Nothing. Uh..
[Dan] 'It was found in the top coat.'
'The, uh, the tenant identified the owner'
'as matching Lacy's description.'
Looks like someone was theorizing on
where to place expl*sives.
MP car. Must be military police.
Yeah, Dan, alert the military authorities.
And, uh..
Ask the highway department to give us
a list of all tunnels in the area.
[dramatic music]
[music continues]
[whirring]
Rivers.
[music continues]
They're about ten minutes behind me.
Did you get the detour signs out of the road?
- Yeah. - Alright.
Take the car down there and you go with him, Mary.
[music continues]
- 'Control to One' - One. Go ahead.
[man on radio] 'Inspector, the army has informed us'
'that two military vehicles with a large payroll'
'is presently travelling along secondary highway, Four-Ten.'
Are there any tunnels along that route?
'Yes, sir, we've been advised that there's one similar'
'to the subjects sketch on secondary highway, Four-Ten'
'approximately 30 miles west of the city of Benton.'
Have the army radio them about the tunnel
and a possible robbery attempt.
'Ten-Four.'
[dramatic music]
Here they come.
[man on radio] 'Base Control to Zero-One-Two.'
'Zero-One-Two.'
They're just boys.
Blow it! Blow it!
[explosions]
[tires screeching]
[intense music]
Let's get it.
[helicopter whirring]
[g*nshots]
[intense music]
- Where's Jerry? - Get in the car, Mary!
- Where's Mr. Lacy? - No time, get in the car!
No!
[g*nf*re]
[music continues]
That's far enough. Drop the g*n.
Turn around, put your hands on your head.
[instrumental music]
[siren wailing]
We didn't want to move you until the ambulance got here.
T-t...those soldiers.
Anybody hurt?
Not critically.
My last job.
I'm glad nobody got k*lled.
[male narrator] Michael Lacy, Jerry Rivers
Eugene Bradshaw and Mary Douglas
was convicted in Federal Court
of theft of government property, conspiracy
and unlawful transportation and use of expl*sives.
In addition, Rivers and Bradshaw were convicted
of assaulting federal officers.
Lacy was also convicted in the sh**ting of a police officer
and returned to Louisiana to serve the remainder
of his sentence.
Lacy, Rivers, Bradshaw, Al Naylor and Enos Riley
were found guilty of burglary.
Rivers was also convicted of interstate car theft.
