02x07 - Recipe for Turnabout – 1st Trial

Post by bunniefuu »

PW: My name is Phoenix Wright, attorney-at-law.

PW: I've become somewhat well-known lately,

PW: but I'm still only getting started.

PW: I take the side of people accused of crimes they didn't commit and find the truth.

PW: To defend the clients I believe in,

PW: I take the courtroom again today.

J: That's enough!

J: This court sees no reason to further prolong the trial.

MB: What? But I saw it!

MB: There was another man! He's the real k*ller!

MB: Why won't anyone believe me?!

J: I shall hereby hand down the verdict.

Sign: Guilty

J: Guilty!

Maya: Put your heart into it.

Maya: "Thank you for all your help until the end."

PW: "Thank you for all your help until the end..."

PW: What do you mean, "until the end"?

PW: Why are you closing down the agency?

Maya: Ah...

PW: Don't give me that.

Gum: Hey, pal!

Maya: Oh, it's Detective Gumshoe, pal.

Gum: Don't give me that, pal!

Gum: Oh, souvenirs for you.

PW: Gee, thanks.

Gum: "Gee, thanks," my foot!

Gum: What's this all about?!

PW: Don't ask me! I have no idea!

Maya: This issue is a month old.

PW: But I wasn't involved in a poisoning case last month.

Maya: What could it mean?

Gum: If this wasn't you...

Maya: No way. Could it be...

Maya: A phony Nick?

PW: What? A phony?!

Gum: Anyway!

Gum: You're coming with me to apologize to the defendant.

Gum: And you'll take the case back to court.

Gum: Now!

PW: Why are you getting so worked up?

PW: Well... You'll see when you meet the defendant.

PW: You'd better take responsibility and defend her, okay?!

Maya: There he goes.

PW: Well, if the client entrusted a case to "me" based on my reputation,

PW: I guess I am kind of responsible.

PW: And my impostor defended this client, huh?

PW: Who could it be?

PW: This is Maggey Byrde, a policewoman I defended once before.

PW: She was accused of murdering her superior officer.

PW: What are you doing in here? Didn't I get you acquitted?

MB: Oh, now you've got jokes?

MB: Looking back now, I guess it was a little strange.

Maya: A little?

MB: You were a bit taller than normal and looked a little bit shady.

MB: Your voice was a bit weird, and you had this funny accent...

PW: So the guy was nothing like me?

MB: But he had your spiky hair and blue suit.

Maya: Yeah, that's Nick, all right.

PW: Oh, come on.

Maya: Hey, Maggey, how come you're dressed like that?

MB: After that incident, I quit the force and now work at a restaurant.

Maya: Wow, a restaurant?

PW: Anyway, what happened?

MB: This whole mess started last month.

MB: There were two men at the restaurant, both drinking coffee.

MB: And then...

MB: One of the men slipped some poison into the other's cup.

MB: The victim took just one sip and...

MB: I was so shocked, I passed out.

PW: Did you know the victim?

MB: Not at all! I'd never even seen the guy before!

PW: Then you wouldn't have had a motive to k*ll him.

PW: The other man has to be the k*ller.

Maya: Why was Maggey convicted, then?

MB: Because no one else saw.

Maya: Saw what?

MB: The chief, and the other customer... Everyone testified that way.

MB: "The victim was sitting alone at his table the whole time."

PW: What?

MB: And then they found a small bottle of poison in my apron pocket.

Maya: What? You had poison in your pocket?!

MB: It wasn't mine, I swear!

MB: The k*ller must've slipped it in when I was unconscious!

PW: And you really did see this other man, right?

MB: I'm dead sure! I was the one who took the coffee to the two men!

Maya: What was he like?

MB: Well, when I first saw them, I thought they might be in the music industry.

MB: The victim was focusing really hard on his earphone,

MB: and there was a sample CD on the table.

PW: Earphone and CD...

PW: It had "MC"-something written on it with a marker.

PW: Must've been a band preparing to debut.

Maya: Maybe it was "MC Screwdriver."

PW: Don't just name them whatever you want.

MB: Mr. Wright... Do you think it's possible to get a retrial?

PW: The defense attorney was a phony.

PW: We should be able to get a retrial.

MB: My life's been a full course meal of bad luck, complete with defeat for dessert.

MB: I've been hit by all sorts of vehicles, gotten sick from all sorts of foods,

MB: been accused of m*rder a second time, and even landed a phony lawyer.

Maya: Curse you, Xin Eohp!

PW: Don't glare at me.

MB: But I will survive!

MB: And one day, I'll find it!

MB: An ordinary happiness for myself!

Maya: Maggey...

PW: I understand.

PW: Will you let me defend you, this time for real?

MB: Mr. Wright!

MB: I'm so glad! Please help me!

PW: I have to believe in Maggey and fight.

Maya: But there's still a big discrepancy...

Maya: between what Maggey and the chief say.

PW: The k*ller who disappeared, huh?

Maya: And then there's the $, lottery ticket and the poison in the pocket.

J: Court is now in session for the trial of Maggey Byrde.

PW: The defense is ready, Your Honor.

God: Hmm... Bitter.

J: Um... Mr. Wright?

PW: Yes?

PW: What?!

J: It's just, whenever I addressed you last time,

J: your response was to yell at me, going, "Youse talkin' to me?!"

PW: Again, that was a phony.

God: That doesn't matter.

God: The only thing I'm interested in

God: is finding out whether you're the real deal or not.

J: The court has already given its verdict on this case once.

J: But since there was an issue with the defense's arrangement,

J: we will hold a special retrial.

God: The prosecution's the real deal this time, too.

God: Let's begin with a nice, hot testimony.

Sign: Witness Testimony

Gum: I'm d*ck Gumshoe,a police department detective.

Gum: The victim's name was Glen Elg.

Oka_Takao,Sign: Glen Elg

Gum: He was a professional programmer.

Gum: The cause of death was potassium cyanide poisoning.

Gum: Traces of it were found on the coffee cup the defendant brought the victim.

PW: The defendant has testified that there was another man at the table.

Gum: Y-Y-Yeah!

God: Sadly, the chef and the other customer have testified otherwise.

God: Isn't that right?

Gum: Y-Yeah, their two testimonies line up on that.

Gum: They both said there was no other guy at the table.

PW: Are we absolutely certain the victim drank the coffee?

God: Take a look at this.

J: There is clearly a coffee stain on it.

God: Conclusive proof that the victim did drink

God: the coffee the lady brought him...

God: Like so!

PW: B-But...

PW: The defendant and victim didn't know each other.

PW: What motive could she have had?

God: The five hundred thousand, of course.

MB: I didn't take it!

God: Detective, where was this lottery ticket found?

Gum: It was found when Maggey was patted down after the incident.

PW: Say what?!

God: It's about time to wrap up this reair...

God: with one final piece of evidence.

PW: F-Final?

God: This is the apron our Madonna was wearing at the time.

Maya: Yikes. Not the cleanest apron I've seen.

PW: What is that stain?

God: The bottle of poison was found in its pocket.

God: Isn't that right, Detective?

Gum: Yeah, and Maggey's... the defendant's prints were the only ones on it.

PW: B-By the way, what's with that red stain?

God: What stain?

PW: Could it be a bloodstain?

God: That's ridiculous! No one told me about a bloodstain!

PW: You don't need to be told. Just look at it.

MB: U-Um...

MB: That's just, uh, ketchup.

God: What?

MB: I got some on my apron while carrying a breakfast set to its table.

J: Stop playing games, defense.

God: Pull a stunt like that again, and I'll have you drink cups of ketchup.

PW: I-I'm sorry.

J: I haven't seen anything yet to make me doubt the last verdict.

MB: No...

Maya: Nick!

PW: Your Honor,

PW: the defense would like to present new evidence to the court.

God: Oh?

PW: Trés Bien's chef, Armstrong, had this to say:

Arm: Come to think of it, there was a prescription bag on 'is table.

J: Prescription?

J: This was indeed not deliberated on during the last trial.

PW: Yes, this is important—

Sign: Objection!

God: Objection!

God: We've already investigated that.

God: Yes, there was a prescription bag at the scene.

God: But it was empty.

PW: E-Empty?

Gum: We couldn't find the victim's medicine on the scene.

May: No way!

PW: But...

PW: The victim was poisoned to death!

PW: There's a chance the missing medicine was laced with poison.

God: Take a good look at the clinic mentioned on that bag.
