Richard Rawlings and prodigious mechanic Aaron Kaufmann seek out forgotten and abandoned classic cars for restoration at their Gas Monkey Garage.

09x08 - Escaping the Zoo

Post by bunniefuu »

Narrator: right now
on "fast n' loud"...

**

Man:
richard was losing his mind.

He loses his mind
over everything.

Narrator: ...hot rod hunter
richard rawlings

Might have to eat his words...

Did I let my alligator mouth
overload my tadpole a*s?

...after agreeing to a race

Against big chief
of "street outlaws"...

All right, big chief,
I'll be there.

...just as master mechanic
aaron kaufman calls it quits

With gas monkey...

I'm already out the door.

...and left the monkeys
on their own...

Coming in hot.

...to build a racecar unlike
any they've built before...

If we get there, we got
some smoke under the hood.

I'll tell you that.

Now the heat is on...

It's serious, I mean, these
guys aren't jacking around.

Yes!

...as the monkeys
throw everything they've got

Into their challenger build...

This motor costs
more than my house.

...while aaron faces
a challenge of his own --

Racing against
an impossible deadline...

We're going to be all the way
down to the wire.

...to take on another
set of outlaws.

It's going down.

It's time to get fired up
because this time,

The gas monkeys are in the fight
of their lives.

And there's no guarantee
they'll come out in one piece.

[ Tires screech ]

**

He had to do that,
didn't he?

Daphne!

What? What?

Get all the monkeys
in here.

Okay.

Got to show them
what we're up against.

Y'all remember how this party
got started, right?

You know, some fan decided
it'd be cool to see a challenge

Between the gas monkey guys
and the street outlaw guys,

And, well, one thing
led to another.

All right, big chief,

Gas monkey never backs down

From a challenge,
so you tell me when and where,

And I'll be there.

Richard, I hear you.

If that's what the fans
want to see, we're down to race.

It sucks you won't
race us on the street,

But meet us at fontana
in six weeks,

And you better get fitted
for your fire suit, big boy.

-Are we in trouble?
-Well, sort of.

I mean, we're up against this.

So that's the street outlaws
and that's big chief.

Mm.

It's pretty serious.

I mean, these guys
ain't jacking around.

I'm just doing my homework,

Researching these boys
from oklahoma.

And I'll tell you
what I found -- they're fast.

At least they look fast.

-I'm sure they're very fast.
-Yeah.

That's what they do
for a living.

Yeah, I'm sure
they're very fast.

So I'm keeping the heat
on the guys to make sure

This build gets done with enough
time for testing on the track.

Respect that those guys
are quick.

-Yes, they are.
-...but don't underestimate us,

Either.

It was kind of a shocker
when aaron quit on me

And left the racecar build
shorthanded.

-Like, he quit?
-He just quit.

Aaron kaufman just walks
in and quits.

Richard: not only are we down
one master mechanic,

But aaron was maybe
going to drive this car,

So while I know my way
around cars, drag racing?

Well, it's not
a skill set that I have.

Rumor has it that big chief
is upset about me

Not getting behind the wheel,

And the way I look at it is,
he is a licensed nhra driver.

And since there's no mention
in the rules

As to who has to drive the car,
well, who better

Than my licensed nhra driver
alex laughlin.

Let me tell you about the rules,
'cause I printed them out.

So it has to be a vin tag car.

It's an 1/8 mile standing start.

It has to be what
they call a metal car,

Which is a steel roof
and steel quarter panels.

And we've got six weeks
to build a car from scratch.

Those are the rules.
They're agreed to.

Matter of fact, tonight,

I'm going to post these
on my facebook

And you're going to be
able to see --

Bam -- who wrote them
and where they came from.

Get you some!

[ Grunts ] yep.

Apparently, I did too awesome
of a job on the hemi

Because kenny said
it was so hopped up,

He needed time to tear it apart
for fine tuning.

Pit crew worthy now.

Yeah.

While the motor's
getting worked on,

I'm doing my best to make sure
we don't [bleep] the bet.

All right, so, can we win?

Yeah.

-Absolutely.
-You see him racing 'em,

But you don't him
building 'em.

Well, we can't
underestimate though.

Chief's fast, so we got
to figure it out,

And I need --
I need a car that'll win.

Stop talking, start building.
Let's go.

All right, get out there
and build us a fast car.

And we're gonna go try to win.

Well, we're not going
to build a slow car.

Well, build a fast car fast.

We build every car fast.

Yes!

Texas doing it big all the time.

"Fast n' loud" all the way.

Hands down, "fast n' loud,"

I'm going to have to go with
"street outlaws" on this.

They got the experience and they
really know what they're doing.

**

Aaron: come here, lola.
What do you think? You like it?

[ Lola whines ]

Oh, yeah. I know. We're missing
a couple odds and ends.

So it's been a couple of weeks

Since I've parted ways
with gas monkey,

But somehow I'm back
in a familiar place

On another incredibly
tight deadline.

-What's up?
-What's going on, man?

It started when I got a visit

From a couple street outlaws
farmtruck and azn.

-I don't owe you money, do i?
-How you doing, man?

-How you doing?
-It turns out they weren't

All that happy
about being left out

Of the outlaw/gas monkey
showdown.

So we thought, hey, why should
they have all the fun?

We want to do
a build off against you.

We could have
an autocross course.

We can have a drag race.

So what's the deal
on the stakes?

We should just run
for pink slips.

Yes, 100%.
Let's do it.

-Okay.
-Okay.

Aaron: so I picked up
a '95 bmw e36 m3

And stripped off
everything I didn't need.

Screw you, plastic.

I started making a list
of the things that I do need

To make this my kind of race,
and here's the rub --

Although I'm using
a modified ls engine

That I have sitting
in my garage,

Almost everything else
has to be ordered.

What's the deal
with the, uh...

And even with john's help,
I'm still waiting on most of it.

...the cinder
and the other fuel parts.

-Tomorrow.
-The gaskets.

Yep. What else have
you been working on?

Just putting the front
suspension on minus the springs.

So that we could set
the fenders up tomorrow

When the wheels come in.

And probably start
cutting some tubes.

We're still short
the barbs, you said?

-Yeah.
-Okay.

My plan is to start
on the roll cage tonight,

But there's not a lot I can do
until I get more parts.

So I figured this might
be a good time

To take a second and scope out
how my competition is doing.

Azn: how come we don't
hear [bleep]? Uh...

-Something's got to be wrong.
-Step out of the closet.

Well, if they raced the same way
they operated a cellphone,

I'd say advantage aaron.

How close are y'all
getting your car done?

Y'all moving along?

Oh, we're already
driving it around.

[ Laughs ]

Well, that's --
that's impressive.

Yeah, we just got back
from lunch in ours.

It's getting deep
around here.

-Yeah.
-Yeah, dude, it's deep.

What, the b.s.?
Yeah.

I wanted to make sure
we're still racing for titles.

-We're not scared of you!
-Well, that's good.

We're probably going to bring
some car wax with us,

'Cause we want it shiny
when we take it off your hands.

Yeah, hey, you're gonna
want it nice and clean.

No, dude, we're
pacing ourselves.

It's going to be
a good matchup, man.

We're going to give you guys
a run for your money.

Excellent. That's what --
I wanted to hear

We were gonna
to have a race.

It's going to be
beards versus skins.

[ Laughs ] okay.

[ Laughter ]

Sounds good, man. All right,
we'll catch you later.

We'll be out there ready
to race with no sleep.

I can guarantee you that.

We'll be in the same boat,
I'm sure. See ya!

Well, that didn't
give me much intel,

But I do know this --
if I want time to dial it in

Before I head out to cali,

I need to have a finished car
in two weeks.

That means I need to take care
of anything that I can now,

Because pretty soon,
I'm going to have a full plate

And not much time to eat.

**

So this is the rear end
richard bought

Just in the anticipation
of the racecar.

Well, at least he gave you
somewhere, a base to start with.

Oh, yeah. And the major reason
we chose the 513 gear

Is once we did the math,
knowing the rpm

That we want to cross
the 1/8-mile line with,

We got a 2-speed
transmission.

And when that thing
goes into high gear,

The math told us we needed
a 513 with a 36-inch tire.

-Okay.
-This is what it's going to take

To leave the line...

-Okay.
...and still cross without,

You know,
blowing the motor up.

Kenny put heavyweight gears
inside of the housing,

Which is critical for us,
because we're going

To be hitting it with

And if you don't
have good gearing,

You're going to shred the thing
before you ever leave the line.

-How fast are we going to go?
-How fast?

Oh, probably somewhere
at 190 mile an hour.

It's close to 200,
probably.

Now we're talking.

I think we can.

That's awesome.

Yeah, that'd be --
if we get there,

We got some smoke
under the hood,

-I'll tell you that.
-I'm excited.

Well, we'll get this thing apart
and get all new parts in,

And we'll start there.

-Okay.
-Sounds good.

-I'm going to grab some tools.
-Okay.

-Here she comes.
-Here we go.

-Got it?
-Yep.

All right.

We're swapping out what's called
the third member.

This is also known
as the heart of the driveline.

This is where you transfer
the 3,500 horsepower

From the engine to the wheels
and into the ground.

The engineering,

You can tell
how much heavier load

This thing can take.

This specific third member
is called a 513.

This is a reference
to the diameter

Of the ring gear inside.

It's designed
specifically for racers,

And it can handle
the enormous force

Put on it by an extra engine.

Yeah, this is a nice
piece of equipment here.

I think that's exactly
what we needed.

We've got to keep
moving at all fronts

If we're going to meet
richard's deadline,

Giving alex the week he needs to
test-drive the car on a track.

So you guys
haven't done, like,

A whole bunch of just
straight-up racecar builds?

Honestly not, you know,

The dart was the closest thing
we came to that,

And we weren't going anywhere
near 200 miles an hour.

This is a whole
new beast for us.

This car is unlike anything
we've ever built before.

I mean, we're
professional hot-rodders,

But amateur racecar builders.

All right, man, I guess
this is a good time

As any to get this thing in.

Just remember, we ate
our wheaties this morning.

[ Chuckles ] yeah.

We're going up against
the fastest street racer

In the country.

We need every advantage
we can get.

All right, I'm going to have
to jack up quite a bit.

So you just --

Okay. I'll stabilize it.

-Ready?
-Yep.

Just what you're doing,
just more.

Yep. More.

Oh.

Hey. We're in.

All right, yeah. Well,
that takes care of that.

Now we just got to hope
it stays together,

'Cause, you know,
even though richard said

It's okay to spend his money,
when you actually do it,

It really get him upset.

Good to know.

Narrator: coming up
on "fast n' loud"...

Coming in hot.

...the monkeys wrestle
with 3,500 horses...

-Down a little bit.
-Whoo!

Aaron: pretty much
just been staring

At this car for two weeks.

Narrator: ...and aaron's bmw
build get a major boost.

Finally got some big stuff.

**

All right, got the motor
ready to go in now

That we've got
the compression changed.

This thing is so nasty,
dude.

You know,
richard was losing his mind,

Because he thought, you know,
we're talking three, four,

Five extra days.

He loses his mind
over everything.

I know.
Let's get this stabbed in.

We know everything's
good there now,

So we can continue
getting the transmission,

All that stuff on.

Hook it up, let's drop it
in real quick

And then we'll
take it from there.

Let's do it.
Who's driving the forklift?

Go for it.
Me?

Yeah, why not?
Okay.

Oh, maybe that was
a bad idea.

Ooh, yeah.

Sounds
like a good idea to me.

It's pretty clear that
richard really wants to win.

He spared no expense
on this specialty engine.

[ Engine starts ]

This motor costs more
than my house, so...

I know.
Dude, I know.

-Forward.
-Yeah.

Onward to the car!

-Coming in hot.
-All right.

Bring your whole forklift
towards the car, if you will.

-Oh, okay.
-Six inches, six inches, mike.

You should know
all about six inches.

sh**t, I wish.

Okay, straight in, mike.

Good?

All right, you can
take it down now, mike.

Down.

Hold on.

Take it slow.

Down a little bit.

Oh.

Where you at now?

You know how to go up?

Hold on, nope.

You want to go down?

-Up?
-Guys...

-Down?
-Down. A little bit.

Out front? Forward?

-Hold it.
-Pause.

-Backwards?
-I've told you.

We need
a more comfortable seat.

Here.

We don't know what chief
is racing with,

So our strategy from
the beginning has been,

Whatever will get us the most
power to the ground faster.

We're betting this hemi
is going to get us there.

That's it.

All right.
Put her down, mike.

Don't forget
about kenny's blower.

It's all about getting off the
line faster than the other guy.

And a supercharger
is exactly what we needed.

What the [bleep] is that,
dude?

That's how we're going to carry
the blower over to the car.

Why don't we just --
is it a swing set?

I don't know. You can do
whatever you want with it

Once we get the blower
on the car,

But it costs way
too much for you

To be playing with
right now.

This doesn't make any sense,
this thing.

It's a little wobbly.

How much is this thing?

Way more than we make.

With drag racing,
you have three options

To boost power by forcing air
into the motor...

Nitrous uses pressurized

Nitrous oxide injected
into the motor.

Turbos take engine
exhaust to spin turbines

To force air into the motor.

Kenny's choice is
a screw blower,

Which forces air down
into the engine

By way of two
screw-like turbines.

The power is immediate
and his preference

On his pro racecars.

I don't understand
this contraption.

I think you're fascinated
with it.

Do we know how hard
it would be to reach?

Weird.

Yeah. Let's take it back behind
the car, so it's out of our way.

This is really exciting.

We have never built
an engine like this before.

Man, that's, uh --
that's one hell of a blower.

Looks like a whole lot
of power there.

Yeah, a lot.

I think we have so much power
they're going to have to

Tune it down to get it
to hook up.

Hey, let's hope so.
Yeah.

If we want to win this race
against the street outlaw guys,

We got to have
this kind of power.

Well, we got to take the tape
off from underneath it, too.

Well, we're not running it yet.
This is why you paint.

**

Aaron: so, it's delivery day
at casa kaufman finally.

I've pretty much just
been staring at this car

For two weeks,
which is basically due to having

Virtually no parts
to build with.

Rock 'n' roll!

Yeah.
That's sweet.

Thank you.

Yeah. A little bigger
than the fender, isn't it?

A little bit.

That's the reason
these aren't welded on.

Aaron:
but we've got sheet metal.
We'll fix all that.

Aaron: I might've gone overboard
a little bit on the rubber.

But we still don't even know
what kind of race this is,

And I like to keep
my options open.

I got 15 tires here.

Golly, that is a lot of tire!

I got another set
inside the truck.

Holy crap!

So I got two sets of nt01s

And I got a pair
of 555r drag radials.

For the rear. Yeah.

I pulled in the nt01s
for any autocross applications,

And the drag radials
are just about

How much rubber
I can put on the road.

Well, I guess let's get
the big dome ones out of here

And the 555s and the other set

So that we can send the wheels

And get them balanced up.

I love days like this.

They're somewhere between
christmas and moving day.

And the fun doesn't stop
when the sun goes down.

Finally got some big stuff.

Looks like about everything

We need to get
the motor fired up.

We finally got all of the holley
parts -- my wiring harness,

My intake, fuel reels, coils.

I've got my bell housing,
my clutch.

So now it's just time
to start putting

All of the pieces
of the puzzle together.

Problem is though,
I've got like, I don't know,

About a month's worth of work
to do in the next three days.

**

Richard: holy [bleep] why in the
world does anybody live up here?

Dude, we're in the middle
of nowhere again.

There's nothing here.

Look, there's a house
in the middle of a field.

We're literally in the, like,

Frozen armpit tundra
of the world.

For a while now,

I've been searching everywhere
for my favorite car

I had in high school,
a red '78 trans am, 6.6 liter,

Power brakes,

T-tops, gold bird,
gold wheels.

The shizzle.
I think we passed it.

Now that combination
is really hard to find,

So when I got a call out
of the blue the other day

From my old buddy dave hall
saying he found one,

I grabbed dennis and hopped on
a plane out there lickity split.

Yeah, we --
we missed it again.

If you don't remember, dave is
the guy who helped us track down

The smoky and the bandit car
a couple of years ago.

And if he actually managed
to get his hands

On a '78 trans am
with all of those options,

He's my new best friend.

Sorry, dennis.
I'm just stoked.

I mean, if this is the same car
I had in school,

That is just wicked.

It's freezing out here,

And if I came up here
for not the right car,

I'm gonna be pissed off.

Wow, he's got a big shop.

This is actually the worst time
for me to be away from the shop,

Because I'm leaving the monkeys
unsupervised on a build

With no budget
that's bleeding money.

Whoo, here we go!

But dave said if I don't
come over and check out

The car now, like, right now,
it's going to be gone.

And considering I've been
looking for one

For over three years, I wasn't
about to take that risk.

Whew! It's frickin'
cold and miserable.

Who lives up here?

-I don't know.
-Holy cow!

I thought he just had
a trans am shop.

Holy crap.

He might have to be
my new money friend.

What's up, dave?

What are you guys up to?

Next time we go to dinner,
you're buying.

My name is dave hall
with restore muscle car

Here in lincoln, nebraska.

You probably shouldn't
have brought us up here.

We are known as one of the top
trans am restoration shops

In the world.

As soon as we walked
in the building,

This is one of the nicest
shops I've been in.

This is my high school
car right here --

-'72 450 H.o. 4-Speed.
-Dude, that's rad.

So that's actually the car
you drove in high school?

Yep.

He has like 100,000
trans ams in there.

That was the star
of the trans am right there.

The one on top,
it's got 79,000,

One owner, 4-speed super duty.

This is a 455 4-speed car

Out of california
that I just got in recently.

This is freaking
ridiculous, man.

This warehouse
is incredible.

I don't know how many
millions are in here,

But it's more than one.

All right, that's enough
let's talk about high school.

Where's my car?

Over in the building.

You got another building?

Yeah, to the north.

We -- we're doing
something wrong.

Yeah.

Are you kidding me?!

I want to see
what I used to drive.

I paid 4,500 bucks for mine
in 1986.

Are we doing the age
before beauty thing?

Yeah, y'all are old.

Dave: there she is.

-Wow.
-Ha-ha! Ridiculous!

Narrator: coming up
on "fast n' loud"...

I'm ice skating for you.

...richard's got
trans am troubles.

He's turning on the lights!
We got to get out of here.

And later...

The challenger
goes off the rails.

**

Richard: I want to see
what I used to drive.

It's not easy to find.

It's rarer than
we thought it was.

We can't find one.

Richard: we're at my buddy
dave hall's shop

In lincoln, nebraska,
on the hunt for my favorite car

I had in high school --
a red '78 trans am.

I've been hunting
for one of these babies

For over three years,
and dave claims he's got one

In his building over here.

-Boom!
-Ha-ha! I love it!

-Wow!
-There she is.

So he opens the door,
and I'm like, "yep."

The elusive red/black,

Holy cow.

Boom!

This is a nice car.

Ridiculous!

That's the first time
I've seen one of these cars

Since I had one.

This is frickin' so rad.

So we pride ourselves on being
able to find anything, right?

We could not find
one of these.

[ Chuckles ]

God, it smells just like
the car I had when I was kid.

So how did you find this?

Dave: a good buddy of mine
found it out of california,

And he had it in storage
for quite a few years.

And he called me up,
and I'm like,

"I think I might have
a home for it."

[ Engine starts ]

I think they only built
a handful of these.

It's got power windows, too.
Did you see that?

Sounds good, too.

This is rad.
Can I take it for a drive?

Sure.

I'm going to need
my hat for this.

It's cold.

You got a hat?!

Dave: don't get it dirty.

Oh, yeah.

He said,
"don't get it dirty."

[ Chuckles ]

Let it her rip,
tatter chip, little donuts.

Whoo!

It's like ice dancing
in a bandit.

I'm skating for you.

Does it feel
like high school?

Yeah, it does.

Look at that icy stuff.

Whoa!

I get in the seat, I'm like,
you've got to be kidding me!

Just big hog leg up there.
Slamming through all four gears.

[ Both laugh ]

You're going to crash
your own car.

Look at that,
there's a cop right there.

Do a donut!

[ Laughs ]

He didn't even see you.

That is awesome.
He literally didn't see that.

[ Siren wails ]

Oh, no, he did.

Hurry up.
He's turning on the lights.

We got to get
out of here.

That might've been a bad idea.

It worked out okay.
He just turned on his lights,

Like, you know, politically
saying, "hey, don't do that."

I'm saying,
"he didn't see us."

And he's like,
"yeah, I did."

Well, we're almost
home, man.

This thing is rad, dude!

I'm buying it.
I don't care what it costs.

And it feels exactly like
I'm 18 years old again.

Okay.

-The drive good?
-So much for negotiating.

You can tear
this guy's head off.

What do you think
this should go for?

You know, in all reality, if I
was to probably market this car,

I'd probably market it
somewhere in that $30,000 range,

Give or take.

So, how about...

-Geez.
-I want to go 20 grand.

-You won't go that, will you?
-That's kind of though.

$12,000?
Did I go too high?

Golly dude, it's just you kind
of got me over a barrel,

'Cause you know I want it, you
know I've been looking for it.

Well, I started out thinking

It was going to be
somewhere in the $30,000s.

I know you guys
are good friends,

And I was looking
for the car for you.

I think we could probably
work out something.

I really want this car, but it's
not actually worth $35 grand.

Dave's taking a page right out
of the old richard rawlings

Playbook and jacking up
the price, because he knows

I've got sentimental
attachment.

But no one beats old trip
at his own game.

That's why I came prepared.

You know we have
something that you want.

I'll let dennis tell you,
'cause he's the guru.

When we told you that
we couldn't find this car,

You told us there was a car
that you couldn't find,

If you remember the conversation
three years ago.

I do.
You said, "well, I can't find

A 455 starlight black

We not only found one --
it's at the shop.

-Oh, nice.
-That's right --

That starlight black
'76 trans am

That dennis and I picked up
in new york the other week?

Dave's been looking
for one of those for as long

As I've been looking
for one of these.

Now it's time to pull
a little trans am ninja on dave.

How about 25 grand?

We hang a number
at 25 grand on this,

'Cause I need this car.

Okay. That sounds like
a pretty fair price to me.

I can't believe you found that.

So we got the deal done --

Dave's going to come down
and check out our '76 trans am.

All right, well,
then the next time I see you,

You are going to be
in texas.

-Sounds good.
-That is a fair deal.

It's a great price
for the car.

Could've easily
got $35 grand for it,

But he knows that's the one
I've been looking for.

Whoo!
You got tequila?

**

[ Metal screeching ]

Come on, battery!

Oh, come on!
Oh, don't do this.

Hello, I'm here.

Well, look what
the cat dragged in.

-How are you, sir?
-What's up, man?

-How are you doing?
-Good.

-When's it going to be done?
-Like, yesterday.

-What's going on, brother?
-Hey, man.

-How are you?
-Good.

-Good. Good to hear it, man.
-Like john --

I heard john telling you
we're sorely behind,

But which is pretty much
right on schedule.

Yeah.

We're coming
right down to the wire,

Trying to get this car
ready for my showdown

With farmtruck and azn.

And I'm at least a day away

From being able
to fire up the engine,

So I put out an s.o.s.
For anyone

Who could come give an hour
or two to try and help.

John's working on getting
the serpentine system.

I'll get the headers
put together.

And then after that, we can
get started on the gas tank?

I can do it.

Excellent, man, hey, thanks
for coming and helping us.

Yeah. No problem.

Yeah.

High five.

I've already been burning
the candle on both ends

For several days now,

So I'm pretty much
running on fumes.

I'm gonna toss
that header up there.

Can I get you to just
hold it in place for me?

-Oh, whoa. There.
-That's it.

It's really hard knowing my bed
is just 30 feet away,

But this car has to be on
a trailer in less than 48 hours.

So if I snooze right now,
I'll lose.

Potentially one of the most
difficult gas tanks to install.

Looks really nice.

That stuff smells good, and
I heard it's good for you, too.

But as you've no doubt
seen many times before,

I like to make things
as difficult as possible,

Preferably on a deadline.

**

Richard: why is everybody
standing around?

I want to see it.
It's a big moment.

-Is it gonna go down for real?
-Yeah.

-We're getting real close, man.
-We got a new engine wired up,

So it's time to crank her over
and see what we got.

We've run the valves,
we've set the timing.

-Got oil in it.
-I [bleep] care less.

Is it going to run
and are we going to win?

[ Sighs ]
we're fixing to find out.

We got a lot of money
in this motor.

I need this thing to work.
What are you doing?

Getting in.

If it takes off,
I want to be safe.

You realize the wheels
ain't on the ground.

I don't care.

Of course we're going the track,

I expect the wheels
to be at least this high.

It's real possible.
It's real possible.

Let's hear it.
Let's feel it.

Okay, turn the fuel on.
Fuel on.

We'll see what
this thing sounds like.

Moment of truth.

Here we go.

[ Engine starts ]

There's only word I can think
of when I hear that motor --

Whoo!

That's the blue flame
of glorious win.

[ Exhaust pipe resonates ]

Now that's a fire!

[ Laughter ]

Yeah!

-That is awesome.
-You know what he said?

"Uh-oh, they going to lose."

[ Laughter ]

Whoo!
Racing's easy.

Man: we all need flames
out of our exhaust.

Golly, man!

We're rooting for you,
gas monkey garage.

We're rooting for you.

We know you're going to beat
the crap out of those guys.

I'm with team "fast n' loud."

This is not their first rodeo.

They've done this before.

Narrator: coming up
on "fast n' loud"...

Aaron faces a big fail
before even leaving home...

Aaron: I need everything
to fall into place,

Or I won't make it at all.

Narrator: ...and the challenger
build faces disaster.

Narrator: the answer is d --

In addition to three wins
as a celebrity,

Alfonso ribeiro also won
as a pro in 2015.

I'm on "fast n' loud"'s team.

So as much I love the 405

And the street outlaws,
big chief, get ready,

'Cause richard's
coming fast n' loud.

Get you some of that.
Whoo!

Hey, aaron.

Give me a battle plan --
exactly what you want.

I'm finished.

'Cause we're making it so much
wider, then we got to take it

So the top
of the factory fender,

Basically bring it all the way
up to that level there.

And then, like, on the back,

You see where's that spur
hanging off there?

That can be brought
straight to the ground.

Okay.

So I was scheduled
to be loading my car

Into a trailer tomorrow,
but as I sit here right now,

There's a real possibility
that that won't happen.

[ Sighs ]

I can leave later,
but every hour I delay

Is one less hour
I have to test the car

On the track
before I actually race.

It's a good start.

Right now, I've got webster
carving out room

In the wheel well for those
enormous tires I'm utilizing.

I got a feeling
we might have to go higher.

Maybe.
We'll find out in a second.

And as soon as I can,

I got to jump in
and finish the wiring.

I can't even fire the engine
until that's done,

So I'm gonna have to do
some automotive triage

To speed things along.

All right.
That kind of bothers me.

I just go to make clearance
for big tires right now.

That's the only thing.

So it's priority one,
get 'em to go on the car.

Priority two, make it look
like they belong there.

Okay.

We're still on one.

[ Laughs ] you know?

It will take at least 24 hours
to drive out to california,

So at this point I need
everything to fall into place

Or I won't make it at all.

**

So here we are
at texas motorplex

Down in ennis, texas,
fixin' to test the car.

I mean, this is it.
We're finally going to find out

What this bad boy can do.

And we've been building this car
over the last like 25, 30 days,

So I rented the track out here
at the motorplex for the day,

And we're going to make
as many passes as we can.

And then we got to get
the thing on the truck,

Get it stickered up,
and get it out to california.

So test day.
What's the schedule?

What do we do first?

Uh, we'll get --
set the time,

And the computer's going to take
us a little while to get set.

And then we're going
to bust thing off here

In about an hour or so, and...

God, I'm so ready.

...make the maiden voyage
down the track.

I'm real excited
to see what it will do.

It's a lot of blood, sweat,

And tears getting
this car here today.

I mean, we've never really built
a racecar of this caliber,

But I believe
we've got a really,

Really competitive car,
very, very fast.

And, uh, to tell the tape will
be when we pass the finish line.

All right. Well, here's
the big day. We busted our a*s.

It is a car once we put
the parts back on it,

But, uh, all we got to do is
go faster than the other guy.

-Let's do it.
-I hope we can do it.

-All right.
-I'm excited.

-Whoo!
-Let's do it.

-Have fun.
-I'm ready.

Hey, I'm going
to turn on your a.c.

Thank you.

[ Chuckles ]

-Ready to rock, brother?
-About ready, guys?

[ Engine revving,
metal groaning ]

Doesn't sound happy.
Sounds like a grumpy old man.

This point has been
a long time coming.

We put a lot of man-hours
in a quick amount of time

To see this thing even
just start up,

Do a burn out,
and get down the track.

I'm excited. I'm ready.

We're going to get
a couple of initial runs

To gather some data
for the computer,

And then hopefully
make a full pass.

Alex:
I will say that I'm a little bit
nervous on how it's going to go.

We really have no idea what's
going to happen with this car

When we first let off
the trans break and hit the gas.

So anything can happen.

Honestly, as long the car
goes straight, I can't complain.

-All right, you ready?
-Lock me up.

[ Whirring ]

[ Engine starts ]

-[ Chuckling ] yeah!
-So good!

We just did, you know,
our first test burn out.

Got the car down the truck
about 100 yards or so.

Alex:
it's not tracking right.

My steering wheel's
like this.

It's all over the place.

Alex said the car
felt pretty good

Except for the steering's
way off,

So we're reclocking
the steering,

And then we'll start
making some more passes.

It's a cheap-a*s steering wheel.
That's exactly what it is.

I don't know a whole lot
about drag racing,

But I'm pretty sure
going straight's part of it.

We're good. Power on.

[ Engine starts ]

The more that you test, the
more car's going to be set up,

And the faster
that car's going to be.

-What happened there?
-It's just hot.

I mean, we just got to
back the car down.

We got way too much
power right now.

We've got a lot of power,
so this is why we're here.

All these are normal things
that we have to work through,

Especially when this is
the first race with a new car.

I can't watch anymore. I mean,
I'm not a professional racer --

That's not what I do,
I'm the money guy --

And I don't need to be
standing around,

Hovering around, and worrying
about every single thing.

This is a real deal racecar.
I'll leave it to the experts.

They know what's at stake.

Get back to the shop.

Try to make some money
to pay for all this.

I'm sure we can handle it.

-Don't be scared.
-I ain't scared.

-It's just money, man.
-[ Chuckling ] yeah.

Throughout the day,
it's a big learning curve.

Things have been
a little bit disappointing.

Every time we fix one problem,
we find another.

But we got to keep pushing.

Go.

[ Engine starts ]

Alex: this is going to be
the last pass of the day.

This is our last shot
to get some good data.

[ Tires screeching ]

[ Crash ]

Narrator:
coming up on "fast n' loud"...

The monkeys must recover
from a test track disaster...

Oh, no.
No, he had to do that.

...and richard tallies
the damage back at the shop.

We could have
a big problem.

Tony: all these street outlaw
guys have their nicknames.

Big chief --
don't think he's that big.

m*rder nova -- don't think
he's ever m*rder*d anybody.

Mike: charles kind of already
got one. It's sleaze.

That's what we call him, so it
would be like super sleaze,

Tough sleaze,
something like that.

Tony -- slowpoke rodriguez,
'cause that dude moves

Super slow.

Jeremy: mike coy -- maybe
the balded wonder or something,

'Cause that's really
what he's got going on.

Jeremy --
I'd probably call him dopey.

Hmm.

**

[ Tires screech ]

Man: [bleep]

Oh, no.
He had to do that.

It's all right. We'll have
to work on it tomorrow.

-He's okay.
-Yeah.

Gosh, damn it!

I get to work on it tomorrow
now, brandon.

I'm fine.

Very low impact.
It didn't hit --

I didn't even see you
burn off good before you --

-I saw you get --
-yeah, it didn't --

It didn't hit hard.

Dude, it just --
it was perfectly straight,

And it just --

Dude, I don't know
what happened.

It just totally
just spun around.

Man, I just can't
even believe this.

I never hit a wall
in my life.

This just absolutely sucks.

Let's see if we can
push it forward here.

Let's see what we got.

It was just
an absolute accident.

This is something
that happens in racing.

I hate it for everybody.

Boy, this is
a pile of [bleep]

Oh, yeah, it broke the mount
on that side over there.

-Did it?
-Yep, it just...

The whole bar is just bunked
like this, hung over.

[Bleep]

Charles: it sounds like
the car shifted right when alex

Hit the smooth part
of the track.

And from there on,
it was like skating on ice.

The damaged caused by the wall
shifted the whole rear end over.

And what that means is the point

Where the rear end's attached

Actually broke up,
so it kind of flopped over.

All we can do is
pull the car off the wall

And kind of check out
what's going on with it,

See if it's even possible
to get it up on the trailer.

Probably the most damage
actually is right here.

It caved the whole quarter panel
in right here.

So when it hit,
it shoved the door forward,

Which caused it
to pop up right here

Which caused it
to jump out from inside

Of the fender right here.

This is not the setback
we needed.

We were on track, and now,

Who knows how much damage
we're going to have to fix.

Who knows it we'll
even make the race.

I don't know if this
is going to work out.

That's a lot of work.

I mean,
it's just ridiculous.

We won't really know anything

Until we start
pulling panels off,

How much actual mechanical
failures happened.

It's just
a really big disappointment.

You know what I mean? Nobody
wants to see our car wrecked.

Dude, you could really tell,
like, right about here

Is where it just
started to veer off.

I mean, I mean this is, I guess,
the point of no return.

We're going to try to ascertain,
you know,

How much damage was
actually done to the car.

There's a few mechanical things
that I saw maybe broke.

Honestly, I'm actually
glad you're okay.

It could've been a lot worse.

At this point, I'm just hoping
that everything's gonna be okay

As soon as we get back
to the shop, you know?

This car has to be done
for that race.

So what do you think
richard's going to think?

Oh, man.
I'm so nervous.

I know, right?

Sitting in the car
going, "oh, my god."

I know. Seriously.

**

So it's early morning
and we got to leave

For california really soon,
and the car's wrecked.

[ Whistles ]
a lot of yellow on there.

Yeah, that --
courtesy of that wall.

Richard: it looks like
it's a little more

Than cosmetics to me.

I've got some marks on the tires
and the wheel itself.

Did we hurt the rear end?

Broke the mount that holds
the rear end in place.

It's not locating
the rear end anymore.

Charles showed me where
the rear end had come unhinged,

So we could have a big problem.

If we got a twisted frame
or something like that,

It's unfixable in our timeframe.
We could just be out.

What's the quick fix?
Just bang it out?

Well, we could try
banging it out,

But I would also call and see
if they got a quarter available.

I don't think we have time
to worry about a quarter,

And I don't really give
a [bleep] what this car

Looks like as long as it
goes down the track fast.

This is a race,
not a beauty contest.

Amen.

It may be faster
to put a quarter on it.

Let's just check
availability on one.

Find a quarter, find a solution,
beat it out, I don't care.

We got to be at the track
in 48 hours.

[Bleep] why can't he wreck
his own car, not mine?

Let's get this blown apart
and figure it out.

Okay.

Pbbbbht! Pbht!

**

Check it out.

Charles:
we went with coy's plan,

And right away we got ourselves
a fresh quarter panel in.

We could've beat
the quarter panel out,

But then we would've
had to body work it

Or it would've
just looked like crap.

Luckily we were able to get
the quarter panel quick

And get it on pretty quick.

This part doesn't
suck so bad anymore.

Oh, my god, it got heavy.

Mike and tony got the quarter
panel on really quickly,

-Which helps us a lot.
-Push, tony.

I am.

I need a whip.

Screw you. [ Laughs ]

People never listen to me.

Jason: now we can get the car
over to the mechanic side

So we can button up
all the loose ends.

We need to get
the car up in the air

So we can get rid of the tire
that hit the wall.

Take this out and take a look

And see if it's straight
or bent or whatever else.

If by chance this wheel's bent,
you know,

We've got one day to find one,
which is next to impossible.

So right now,
little stressful time.

Well, that sucks.

See it really good
on the side wall.

-Yeah.
-Wah, wah, wah, wah.

It didn't take long.
Spinning that wheel,

You can see how
it's just wobbling.

The wheel's bent.
It's got to be replaced.

Can't go down track
with a wobbly wheel.

I've already made a phone call.

We got a wheel
being located right now.

If we have to have it
shipped to california,

That's what we'll do.
It'll be in california.

All right, did we figure out
everything that we need to fix?

We got to order another wheel.

When it hit the wall,
it obviously bent that.

-Okay.
-Axle's good.

The rear end housing --

We've got to weld
the reinforcement

Back to hold it in place.
But other than that,

Everything's coming
together real nice.

All right, so how long
before I can have this thing,

Uh,
ready to go on a trailer?

-Probably late tomorrow.
-Does that work?

Yeah. I mean,
it's gonna have to work.

We don't have any choice.

Richard:
well, let's get it loaded.

I don't think
we're going to end up

With a real beautiful car
at the track,

But as long as we win,
that's all that matters.

Are we going to make it?
Yeah.

Are we going to be able to race?
I don't know.

But I damn sure ain't
just gonna not show up.

-You're in.
-Wheel the truck.

See you in california,
brother.

Busted our a*s
to get this car done,

And I just hope
it's gonna be enough.

**

So right now, we don't
have a full test,

And we've got to get it
all the way out to california.

We're going to have
a little bit of test time there.

Hopefully that'll prove up, but,
whew, it's anybody's race now.
