Richard Rawlings and prodigious mechanic Aaron Kaufmann seek out forgotten and abandoned classic cars for restoration at their Gas Monkey Garage.

01x12 - Holy Grail Hot Rod

Post by bunniefuu »

Narrator:
right now on "fast n' loud"...

Whoo!

Hot rod hunter richard rawlings

And master mechanic
aaron kaufman

Race to oklahoma to grab
the holy grail of hot rods.

There she been sittin'.
Wow.

Narrator:
a '32 ford three-window.

Is it real?
[Bleep] yeah, it's real.

And it leads to
their biggest blowup to date.

Riddle me this,
caped crusader.

If this was
your [bleep] car,

You would pull it in there
and fix it

Because you wouldn't want
to spend 15 grand

On a [bleep] chassis.
Nope.

Narrator: could this be the end
of the dynamic duo?

Why would
we change anything here?

Why would we change it?

Then richard and aaron get their
groove on in a '64 ford van.

These wheels are mondo.
God, these things are cool.

Richard looks a gift horse
in the mouth

In the form
of a free shelby truck.

I don't know what you've done
here, but it's not good.

As long as this car
is in the paint shop tonight,

Then I think
we're still on schedule.

And aaron hits the wall
on the '32 ford.

Aaron!

[ Whistles ]
get in here.

Every morning, I get up
and I check the internet,

Check the newspapers, and
I comb through everything
that's for sale.

But today, '32 ford
three window, all steel.

They just don't come up
very often.

We've only had what?
Maybe three of 'em?

Yep.
And, uh, this is it.

Rawlings:
dude, check this out.

I'm talking to the guy
right now.

Kick through
those pictures.

Um, yes?
So it's all steel?

Had to call aaron in.

Let's take a quick look at
the pictures, look at the price,

And get out there
and get it bought

'Cause there's a lot of guys out
there that try to do what I do,

But they ain't quick,
and they ain't got the cash.

You like it, aaron?

Yeah.
Yeah, I think so.

All right.
Let's go.

All right, sir.
I can be there in three hours.

Maybe three and a half.

One of the largest reasons we're
really excited about this car

Is the iconic nature
of the '32 three window.

It's just
they're very hard to get.

And when you do find one,
they're exceptionally expensive.

I mean, this is exactly
what we're looking for.

Absolutely.

It's titled,
'32 ford, all steel.

It's already chopped.
It's three window.

I'll tell you right now,
it's gonna test some rear
suspension work on it,

And then the headlights
are obviously wrong.

But, uh, I can tell
it needs a little work,

But if he had it
on the road once,

It can't be
far from it now.

We're on our way
to go see it right now.

And we're taking cash.

I don't know what we're talking
about it for. Let's go.

Rawlings:
you got to get up every day.

You got to search
all the internet.

Search the papers.

Be out there looking
and have a lot of cash

'Cause they pop up
at all weird hours of the night,

All times of the day,

And if you're not looking,
you're gonna miss it.

I just get up
and eat my cereal.

All right, dude.

I got chips, beef jerky,
and bottled water.

Let's roll.

Pictures look real good, and
his description was real good.

And sometimes
you just get a good feeling,

But you never know
till you stand in front of it.

I could get up there,

And this car could be a plastic,
fiberglass, four-door nova.

Kaufman: he said
the deck was steel?

Rawlings: yes.

Has it been filled?
The roof?

Uh, it looked like it
in the pictures.

I forgot to ask.

Does it have cowl vent
in it?

Uh, forgot to ask him.

Kaufman: so, after a little
journey up the freeway here,

Couple hours,
we get up to here

To the, uh -- looks like
a bit of a museum almost.

You must be t.j.

I am t.j.
Bet your name's richard.

Richard rawlings.
Nice to meet you.

Gas monkey garage.

This is my dad.
Tommy l. Castor.

Tommy, how you doing?
Likewise.

You guys got quite a few cars
bouncing around here.

We have a few,
a few of 'em.

Right on.

Well, I came out here
to see a '32 ford.

You want to see it?
Rawlings: yes, sir.

All right.

I've been just about anxious
for 300 hundred miles

Or however far it was.

This where you hide
your '32 fords at, huh?

This is where I hide it.

All the other stuff.

Rawlings: the '32 ford
is better know as the deuce,

And you know what?

For a serious collector,
that's the ultimate hot rod.

The beach boys loved it so much,
they wrote a song about it --

"Little deuce coupe."

And if you're wondering
why it's called a three window,

Carmakers don't count
the windshield.

The 1932 ford

Was the first v-8-powered car
for the mass market,

And back then, this baby would
have set you back 575 bucks.

[ Laughs ]
there she been sittin'.

Kaufman: fling open the garage
door, and there it is.

Wow.

So, did you have her
on the road for a while?

Yeah, I used to.
Used to drive it.

It's on rollers here.

Can we roll it out in the middle
and take a look at it?

Sure can.

Rawlings: there we go.

Kaufman: richard, I think
this is a pretty nice car.

It looks like the rear-end
install on it's clean.

I was kind of concerned
about that,

You know, initially looking
at it.

Everything looks good.
I had a couple concerns

Coming up here,

And pretty quickly
most of 'em vanished.

It looks
like a great car.

Has this thing been
in any magazines?

Has it got any history
or anything you know of?

It has been
in street rodder magazine.

I think it was september 1978.
'78.

And it's been in street scene
a few times.

And we're members of the nsra.

And we were just in there
with a big article,

Write-up about my whole family
and the street rods

And the cars and stuff
that we build.

My kids are even in there,
my dad.

It goes a way back
in our family.

Well, it's gonna go
to a good home if we
can make a deal.

I mean, you were wanting
about 30 grand.

And I'm thinking 25.

I've had it forever,

And that's pretty much like
a member of my family to me.

I-i can't do that.

Usually I'd probably go

But then you're gonna hit me
back at 28 or 29,

So why don't we say

In cash.

I think it'd work on that.

Good deal, man.
Good deal.

Well, is there cold beer

In that refrigerator out there
of yours?

There's cold beer
in that refrigerator.

Well, I'm gonna give you
a bunch of cash to count.

And then
while you're doing that,

You tell me
when you get to 28,

And if there's any extra,
you give it back.

That depends on how much
of my beer you drink.

[ Laughter ]

Thank you, sir.
Thank you, guys.

Rawlings: t.j. Wanted

You know what?
That was a fair price.

I just didn't want to pay it.

It's just, uh --
it's the gas monkey in me.

I got to get a little bit
off of that price.

So I just hit right at 28,
so now I'm leaving with a '32.

[ Laughs ]

T.j.: I didn't get
my 30 grand out of it.

Made us a deal
at $28,000.

It's been a good day
as far as I'm concerned.

We found what we wanted.
We got the car.

The money's right.
The drive wasn't bad.

And there's still
a little daylight left.

I'm looking forward
to see what they do to the car.

I know that they're more excited

Than they're letting it out
on camera.

I can tell.

Whoo!

What up? What up?

Is it real?

[Bleep] yeah, it's real.

And it's just like
up in oklahoma

In this guy's lean-to
next to his doublewide.

I mean, nice people
and all that, but...

Same old same weird deal.

How many times you driven down
a country road,

Trees hanging over it,

Mailbox with headers
on the side of it,

And you think all this guy's got
is a souped-up lawnmower.

And the guy
had a hardtop '55,

And then just crammed
into the corner

Of a galvanized tin shed,
had this there.

Aaron, what
are you thinking?

Besides the fact
that I got to get

This cigar-smoking chicken off
of it. I hate these things.

That thunder chicken's
not doing it for you?

No.
What we could do

Is we kind of use what's already
going on here, is an nsra car.

So I think what's not
a far stretch from that ad

That I think looks better

Is kind of a '60s show car,
drag car kind of thing.

Put a really wild
sparkly paint job on it.

Three days, k.c.

Listen, hey, this one,

We have got to have
this thing done quick

Because we've got
an event coming up

And this would be perfect
for it.

I dig it
on the ground, man.

It looks good.
It looks mean.

It looks a heck
of a lot better out here

Than it does
in that guy's barn.

Rawlings: the auburn, indiana,
auction's in two weeks.

It's a perfect venue
for this car

Because they only take historic,
well-preserved, awesome cars.

Our plan's pretty simple.

We're gonna throw in
a sparkly paint job,

Some white interior,
chrome wheels, new motor.

Dress the car up.
Get ready to sell it.

At least that was the plan.

Kaufman:
cars are different

Than a lot of other art projects
or other things.

Cars gather about 10,

And sometimes
they don't always jive.

They don't work together.

Once I got under the '32,
I could tell

That it had been extensively
worked on over the decades.

The trailing arm mounts
are raw torch cut,

And they've got
some type of isolator pad,

Which is
probably some old tires.

Boy, it looks like
a pack of angry beavers

Chewed this hole out.

Also, the frame had been boxed,
which means reinforcing plates

Had been welded
into the inside of the frame.

It's got boxing plate
on boxing plate on boxing plate.

Just chunks of crap
welded to things.

So a lot of times, it's easier

To just do
a little hot rod triage

And say, "let's not work
on the frame at all."

What we need for the speed
we're building

And with the quality of car
we're gonna build,

We need a new frame.

[ Sighs ]

This is where
we always disagree.

And this is where

I always spend more money.
That does change things.

You refuse to fix this car
the way it is,

So I'm just gonna buy
the [bleep] thing.

You're wasting $10,000
of my money.

Are you ending up with it?

I don't care.

But I know you have
the skill set to fix this

Appropriate enough
for what we're doing.

Not in this timeframe.

Then...
Then we leave it alone.

It's 10 g's.

It's just gone.

Best money to be made then

Is put steel wheels on it
and get it running.

Leave it alone.

Don't mess anything.
Don't change anything.

Get rid of the blinkers.

You drop
the headlights down.

You get the shorter shocks and
put the front end down.

You fix the knickknack things
that you don't like.

You get rid of the headers,

And you run the exhaust back
like you're talking about.

And maybe
we clean up the motor.

Maybe we just louver that
and do the interior.

And we've saved
a [bleep] of time

And money and effort
and everything.

And I still got a chopped
and channeled '32 ford.

I think doing anything to it,
I think, pushes it.

It was
a good price on the car,

But I think labor
would just destroy this thing.

So you put a set of wheels
on it.

Don't fix the rear end.
Don't fix the front end.

Someone drove it before.

Someone with low standards
will drive it again.

Dude, I know how long it --
you don't like this.

You don't like
where that is.

You know
what that takes you?

[Bleep] an hour.

I'm an idiot,
and I'm pretty sure I can build

A proper mount for that
in about two hours.

Is that a challenge?
No.

'Cause I'm not gonna [bleep]
do it

'Cause I don't want to.
Of course.

Here's the thing.
I'm not gonna invest in this.

I'm not gonna put my time,
my labor into it

If we're
gonna turn it around

And sell it on parts and pieces,
little things.

We'll just do
what we always do.

We'll go
into my [bleep] bank account.

We'll just grab
a whole bunch of cash

And lose our [bleep] a*s.

And you guys will work

For the next two weeks

Making this
into an awesome piece of jewelry

That's a [bleep] loser.

You pick.

If I'm gonna fix something,

I got to fix the thing
it's attached to.

Dude, you're opening
a can of worms

That you can't
see the bottom of.

No, the can of worms
is you.

You just keep going,
keep going, keep going.

You won't be happy
unless I spend $12,000, $15,000

On a [bleep] chassis.

You're the one
that stepped into this project.

Narrator: coming up...

The fight over the new frame
gets ugly.

You know you can make this
badass.

It's boxed like hell!

And richard makes a bid
for a groovy '60s van.

This thing's probably only worth
about 3 g's.

Oh [bleep]

Rawlings: all I know
is I went to oklahoma,

And I got a [bleep] chopped
and channeled '32

That I should make
a [bleep] bunch of money on

And you want to build

The most massive [bleep] thing
on the planet

Or refuse
to build nothing.

We're talking
about making money.

We're not talking about saving
a car from a bad life.

So, this is a damn good car,
and it deserves more...

...'Cause that body doesn't
belong with that frame.

Riddle me this,
caped crusader.

If this was
your [bleep] car,

You would pull it in there
and fix it

Because you wouldn't want
to spend 15 grand

On a [bleep] chassis.
Nope.

But yet, because it's mine,

You want to spend
my [bleep] money

And put it underneath this car,
because you want to say,

"I built
this [bleep] badass car."

I'd pull the body off,
and I'd sell the chassis.

[ Sighs ]

That's a fact.

You know you can make this car
[bleep] badass.

You just don't want
to make this car badass.

You want to make the car
you have in your mind.

Okay.

At some point,
you have to decide

If you want to work

For the next two weeks

To spend 50 grand
of my money

To lose
and not make anything,

'Cause if we do that
enough times,

People
will stop getting paid.

Explain to me
what you want changed.

I want it to be

A [bleep] nice
chopped and channeled '32.

You won't get there with it.

You won't get there
with this frame.

I know
you don't understand.

You may not
in 1,000 years.

You won't with this frame.

This one could be repaired,

But the labor
would be astronomical,

Like on the '64.

What is so bad
about this frame?

It's boxed like hell!
And it's trash.

Everything on the inside
is just torch cut and left raw.

It's complete trash
on the inside.

All right. Fine.

You want
a $50,000, $60,000 car.

You got a $20,000 car.

I'd like
a $50,000, $60,000 car

That I don't have

That's what I want.

Listen, lower the car,

Change your headlights,
put interior in it.

Let's put it on the rack
and look underneath it.

Okay.

It's pretty [bleep]

I'm not afraid
anything's gonna fall off.

That's not the problem.

It's just that it looks like
it's been worked on

By half a dozen people,

And at some point, you have
to cut the cancer off.

On this one, it's a lot.

You should have been
like a preacher or something.

You just gave me
the sermon.

I'm eating that [bleep] up
with a spoon.

Let's go spend more money.

We'll get you a choir robe,
and you're in.

Let's just go spend money.

Let me go find out what
a chassis is gonna cost us.

We can't waste any time if
we're gonna make this auction.

So I'm gonna have k.c. And scot

Start tearing the body
off the old frame.

You know, when richard and I
get in arguments,

There's one thing
that makes us feel better.

I can't talk about that.

The other thing
is going out to look at cars.

Richard knows
where there's a van for sale,

And it's at one
of his favorite places in town.

Two bearded dudes in a van.
What do you think about that?

That's a whole
different program.

What's up, sam?

Chamberlain:
hey, what's going on, man?

Dude, it's hot out there, man.
It's miserable.

You ain't lying.

Sam: I thought
about getting rid of my van.

I thought richard, told him
I was thinking about selling it,

You know, and trying
to give him first dibs,

You know, 'cause he's a friend.

Dude, I was gonna call you
and get some tattoo work done.

And I just never got around
to it.

And then you called
and told me you wanted

To get rid of the van,
so I'm like, "kick a*s."

This is awesome.

I haven't been
to see sam in --

Well, I guess since the last
time I got my last tattoo,

Which is this one
right here.

By being a big fan
of hot rods,

Most hot rods
have four speeds in them.

I wanted my palm to match
what it was always on,

So sam hooked me up
one night.

Looks like he hooked us up
again today.

My hand would probably have
a [bleep] in it.

It's what it's always on.

How long you had it?

I've had it quite a while,
you know.

It's
an old skate-style van.

Cool.
Let's go check it out.

Yeah, cool, cool.

Ow!
Gonna get myself a van.

Did it win this trophy?

I'd like to hope so.

Dude,
that is awesome.

I feel like the van's gonna fall
over when I sit up here.

It does look
a little top heavy.

You feel like
you're gonna pop a wheelie.

You say there's room enough
in here to put a v-8?

Yes.

Chamberlain:
the van is a 1964 econoline.

Short wheelbase van.

It's just a fun
drive-around car, you know?

Rawlings: the compact ford
econoline was a popular choice

As a work and utility vehicle

Due to its long, low-level floor

And an optional ability
to load from either side,

Saving time and work.

Anything it needs,
or is it just a cruiser?

I mean,
if you like to rodeo,

I mean,
it's lifted '70s style, so...

I mean, it runs
and drives good.

Definitely digging
the lifted look.

Well, dude, bottom line is,

We don't need
one of these things.

What are we gonna do
with it?

Probably get a flag
that says "chilling the most"

And rock that b*tch
up and down the coast.

You know what I'm thinking?
No idea.

We're always going
to the shows,

And we got to carry
all the t-shirts

And everything else
like that.

Why can't we throw a few boxes
of shirts in this and be done

Instead of tearing the trailer
and taking the raptor?

Well, it's no raptor, but
it's definitely a lot cooler.

Open it up, hang some shirts out
right here,

And there you go, man.

$20, $20, $20, $20.

So, what's the deal, man?

Is a little strong.

It's what you told me
on the phone.

Man, it's a pretty cool van,
though.

Yeah, but you can't --

Cool doesn't get
the price tag up.

You know this thing's probably
only worth about 3 g's.

Oh [bleep]
the c-clamp?

Is it an important part
of the motor or what?

What? The c-clamp?
Yeah.

That's custom.

Come on. Like 3 grand.
I'm cash, man.

Man, I got more than $3,000
in stickers in there.

Probably as low as I go --
maybe like $5,000.

Man, I can't go that low.
I've got to go lower.

Aaron,
what do you think, man?

Oh, I like it, man.
I like it a lot.

You're jonesed up.
I am.

You're gonna sleep
in this thing tonight.

What do I got in here?

I don't even know
what I carried today.

I got two wrappers
in here.

That means I got

That's what I got.
That's all I got.

$4,000, Huh?

You're gonna live in it,
huh?

A little, I imagine.

As much time
as I spent at the shop?

Probably fall asleep
driving it home.

Yeah. I think could
probably go with that.

Got yourself a van,
homes.

Rock 'n' roll.
Ow!

Richard
tried to come lowball me,

Which, you know --
that's in his nature.

And I still got good money
out of it.

And he got a cool car, so...

It is badass.

Dude, you're gonna be
living in it. You drive.

Got it.

You know, I wanted it
'cause it was just badass.

You're all amped up on it.
So why not?

I'll go ahead and go to $4,000,

But I think
the van's worth $3,000.

I think I just cost myself
some money.

[ Engine turns over ]

[ Laughs ]

Yeah, but sometimes awesome
is a little expensive.

Hey, we forgot the radio.

You can't put a price
on awesome.

Kaufman:
well, we just did.

It was $4,000.

Richard might want
to keep this.

Kaufman: while we were out
looking at the groovy van,

K.c. And scot have been
hacking away on the '32.

Perfect.

We're gonna remove the body
and send it to the sandblaster.

Watch the feet.

Kaufman: richard has
already entered the '32

In a wwa auction for rare makes
and models in indiana.

But it's nine days away,

And with the car in pieces,
we can't begin to do anything.

In fact, we can't even plan

To do anything
until we get a frame.

Narrator: coming up...

A free truck leaves richard
at a loss for words.

I don't even know what to do
with something like this.

And richard and aaron
are at it again.

I think
it should be glittery.

Yeah, glittery orange.
Are you on crack?

Rawlings: so, this morning,
we're waiting on two things.

Got a new full chassis
coming in for the '32 ford,

And I got a dodge shelby pickup
coming in.

Don't know a lot
about shelby trucks,

But it's shelby,
so it's got to be cool, right?

Best thing? Zero.
That's what it cost me.

Guy called up, he likes what
we do, and he gave it to us.

I don't think I remember shelby
making green trucks.

Kaufman: I don't know.
Shelby did a bunch
of weird stuff.

This could
just be the pinnacle.

I don't know
what you've done here,

But it's not good.

Carroll shelby
was an auto-design legend,

Best known
for mustang-based cars,

Like the classic cobra
and gts models,

Which ruled the road
throughout the 1960s.

A racecar driver himself,

Shelby's 1968 cobra gt500
had the initials k.r.

Appropriately, it stood
for "king of the road."

The man bought it.
It wasn't what he expected.

And so, they got it,

And he was like, "I can't do
anything with it."

And nobody
wanted to buy it.

Well, I've been excited
for a few days now

Waiting on it to show up,

And I'm starting to get
the same feeling he had.

Do we know if it runs?

[ Engine sputters ]

Brimberry: uh-oh.

That's why it's got
jumper cables in the back.

Yeah, we now know
why it's got jumper cables.

Rawlings: I hate to look
a gift horse in the mouth,

But this shelby's
not what I expected.

Even if it did run, I don't
think I could find a buyer.

I don't even know what to do
with something like this.

What's scrap going for,
scot?

$300, $350
For this truck.

Why don't we look
into maybe donating it?

There's a local charity
that we can give it to.

I'm betting a case of beer

That it doesn't even bring
scrap value.

Whatever they do with it,
it benefits kids in the area.

And they want this?

They'll take anything.

Someone gave it to us,

So why can't we give it
to someone else?

I mean, y'all are talking
about taking it apart

And trunking it off.

I don't even want it here.
I don't even have room for it.

I'm cool with that.
Let's help some kids.

You know, whatever they do.

Let's help some people
with kids and stuff

And things
and whatever they do.

Rawlings: this truck's just
not gonna work for gas monkey.

So I'm gonna donate it,

Raise some money for some kids
right here in my own backyard.

Good thing is, it's not
out of the 7-mile radius

So I'm not having
to pay double on the tow.

I'm getting the change
out of the glove box.

I thought you wanted to help
kids and stuff and things

And people.

Kaufman: richard finally got
ahold of a '32 ford chassis

From pete and jake's
hot rod parts.

So we're gonna throw the wheels
on it, roll it in the shop,

Ha, ha, see if the body fits.

K.c. Showed up with the body.

It's been sandblasted
and primed.

Now we can see
how it fits our new frame.

Here's the thing.

At this point, we can go one
of two ways with this car.

We can make it a highboy

With the body on top of the
frame and a lowered suspension,

But to do that, I'm gonna need
an original factory floor

Because that's what most buyers
are going to expect.

The problem is, those are hard
to find, and they're expensive.

The other option is to rechannel
the body over the frame.

But that means I'm gonna have

To build a whole new floor
from scratch.

It's mostly
an aesthetic decision

Based around what we think's
gonna sell best.

So, it's a kind of a decision
we're having to make,.

I gave richard a call.

He's gonna show up here
in a minute.

We'll talk it through
and see what we're gonna do.

What's up?
What's up?

Marching orders.
What do you want to do?

What are you thinking?
Go back up?

Anyone can go down
and pick up --

You know, a highboy.

Maybe not
a highboy three window,

But there are plenty
of highboys around here.

You want one, you can have one
this afternoon.

But real-deal,
old chopped, channeled cars

Are a bit harder to come by,
so...

Have you tried
sliding it down?

I can't put it down
because of the rails.

It's a channeled car.
Gotcha.

So, now,
here's the other thing.

To channel it,
I've got to remove this panel,

Which I have no problem
removing,

But I've got
to remove this panel

All the way back to the --

All the way
to the very back

And cut this up
even higher,

And also the other frame
has been kicked,

So these mounts
are incorrect now.

How long does that take?
All day.

All day.
[Bleep] that's what I thought.

And that's if there's no --
we don't find no hiccups.

Other than that, this is
the only rust in the car.

Yeah, I saw it.

Rawlings:
this is a big decision.

Highboys are real popular
right now,

And they're bringing big money
at auction.

On the other hand, I really like
the chopped and channeled look.

But it's less popular
with the buyers,

And that's gonna hurt
my profit margin.

You know
what my thought process is?

That's the reason
you're here right now,

Is 'cause I don't.

Are you asking my opinion?

I'm telling you,
which way do you want me

To run
with your $70,000 car?

I'm afraid to tell you
'cause if I pick something,

You're gonna go
the other way.

Or it might save you
money.

I say we channel it.

I say go down
and pissed off and...

Great, great.

I absolutely think that's
the best call to be made.

I hope aaron's right

'Cause even though
I kind of agree with him,

It's still
a huge financial risk,

And not doing the highboy
could bite me in the a*s.

Also, since you're here,
let me go ahead

And show you what k.c.
Came up with on colors.

Kaufman: we asked k.c. To give
us a couple paint samples

From around 1936 to 1942,

Which would be authentic
to the time.

I like this color more,

But this is easier, tough-guy,
old hot rod, kind of.

We found a couple colors
that we really, really like.

One of them we liked a lot.

But the finish out on the car
would be tremendous.

I like the green,
but I'm afraid we got

To go a little
too show car-y with it

To pull off
all the chrome.

I like the green, but I think
I want the darker car.

You know,
I'm okay with that.

Then went
with a mandarin, uh, maroon.

It's gonna be
a little bit tougher look --

More hot rod, less show car.

So that's the direction
we're headed.

This is where I'm happy
all I got to do

Is spend the money,
and y'all do the work.

See ya.

Rawlings:
so, we finally got a plan

And now only have six days
to build this entire car.

If we're gonna make
this auction,

The build better go smooth,

And there better not be
any problems.

[ Thunder crashes ]

So, paul, my graphics guy,
just stopped by.

And we're coming up
with a good plan

For the gas monkey swag van.

I don't know, man.

What are you thinking
on this, aaron?

We were just discussing on what
we wanted to get done on this

'Cause I told him
you were coming by, but...

What I'd like to see is kind of
an off-white background

And then
a desert scene here.

And I'd like to see
some b*nditos

Coming over the hill here.
Paul: okay.

So, that pretty much sums up
what I'm after here,

Except for all the b*nditos
are riding steel horses,

Not living, breathing horses.
Steel horses.

Steel horses.
Okay.

Hey, what are you
really thinking?

'Cause I want -- I want...

I wasn't joking.
The monkey...

Big...

With a tongue
coming forward,

'Cause you can do it in inverse
on each side

So it's facing the same way
on both sides.

So we're not doing
the western scene?

No, we're not doing
the western scene.

Are you on crack?

Now, if we go with the monkey
on there,

What kind of colors
are you thinking about doing?

Sparkly orange.

Sparkly orange?
Uh-huh.

I think
it should be glittery.

Yeah, glittery orange.

It'll look like
a freakin' pumpkin.

I think
we need to stay chrome,

And I like
going to tone on tone.

I even like a tone on tone
where it's a little more subtle.

It's not just out there.

I mean, pick something
fairly close to this

And get it on there.

So we're not gonna do
the western scene?

Since aaron's already laid out
his western scene

And we're not going
for that,

Me and you will just figure out
what we want to do.

This is christi's project
anyway.

She's got to build
our little retail area

And get all the shirts in there
and come up here

And interact
with all the people.

So, we'll come up
with something.

This is where everything
just gets crazy.

We've torn the car apart.

Obviously we've gotten rid of
the old frame and the old motor.

Aaron's scrambling to get
all the parts ordered.

I mean, there's a ton of stuff
that goes into this.

Everything in this car
except for the actual body

Is gonna be brand-new
or retooled and refitted.

That's a big undertaking,

Especially in the budget
and the timeframe that we have.

Aaron's stressed out.

I'm stressed out.

Two different reasons --

He has to do it
and I got to pay for it.

Kaufman:
one of the biggest goals

Is to get the body
fit to the frame today.

That way I can get the frame and
the body over to the body shop,

But quite frankly, I don't
have time to talk about it.

Narrator: coming up...

[ Tires screech ]

Richard and christi make a bet.

You'll lose so bad.

And things get dicey
on the '32 ford.

Oh! [Bleep]

It's stuck.

Kaufman:
we're already behind schedule.

This car should be
at the paint shop already.

It's not,
but before it can go,

I have to put a floor in it

'Cause we can't do
this much fabrication

After the body's been painted.

I've been told before that I'm
too much of a perfectionist,

That I spend too much time
on all the minute details

And way too much effort
on things

That no one's ever gonna see.

But for me, I'm always trying
to build the best car I can,

And make the next one better
than the last.

And I really feel like
if your goal

Is just to build a car
that's good enough,

Well, I really think you ought
to be doing something else.

Rawlings:
we're at the texas can academy.

Basically what they do is

They get donated trucks,
cars, boats, you name it,
all week long.

And every saturday
they have an auction.

They take all the money
from the cars,

Or all the donated cars,
and they use it to help kids

Who are pregnant
or dropped out of school.

Their families don't have
enough money to feed them.

I convinced richard to donate
this truck.

I think it's a good deed.

Um, it helps local kids.

And beyond that, we made a bet.
And I think I can win.

Rawlings: so to make it
a little interesting,

Christie and I bet
a case of beer

On what this thing
would sell for.

All right, guys, this is
a pretty rare '89 shelby truck.

Customer of ours
donated it to us,

So what we did was donated it
here to can academy.

[ Laughs ]
do a little burnout.

Yeah.

But...

[ Laughs ]

These trucks are
really pretty neat.

They're a shelby truck. This
is number 1433 of the series.

And we're pretty excited
to bring it here to you

And hope you guys throw
your hands up in the air.

And let's help some kids.
Thanks.

[ Cheers and applause ]

Time to get going.
Lot number 113.

Let's get it started, guys.
Everybody can play.

Everybody put your hand up
right now. Go.

[ Calling ]

You lose.

Sold!

[ Cheers and applause ]

Christie and I had
a little bet on this one.

This truck would go for.

She thought it would it go
for a lot more.

It went for a lot more.

It brought 2,500 bucks
to this charity.

We're helping out a lot of kids.

I lost a bet,
but I still feel good about it.

Well, I guess you won.

Ha, ha.
You're a loser.

No, I'm not.
The kids are winning.

It's not very often that I get

To tell richard
that he's a loser.

He's always right.

I don't know very much
about cars, but I win.

We donated a good truck
and made some good money.

I'm glad we did it.
I'm good with that.

I think I deserve a case
of beer anyways.

Fair enough.
It's your good deed for the day.

[ Laughs ]

[ Auctioneer calling ]

Well, did you sleep
in your truck again?

Kaufman: oh, yeah,
I just didn't do it here.

I did it on the side
of the road.

I couldn't quite make it home.
I kept falling asleep.

And I figured late
and finishing the car

Was better than dead
and never finishing the car.

You got to cut
that out, man.

I'm gonna buy you
an airstream or something,

And you can
just live here.

Well, I'm waiting for it.

How are we doing
on just final time?

I mean, I know you hate it
when I ask you that

When the car's
torn apart,

But we're getting close.

Yeah. Well, it's scary,
but I think it's fine.

As long as this car is
in the paint shop tonight,

Then I think we're
still on schedule.

And one way or the other,
come hell or high water,

We're assembling the car
on monday.

This car is not
as bad as it looks.

We already got the doors
over to k.c.

And we're gonna attack
the remaining fabrication

So that we absolutely,
positively get this car

To k.c. Tonight...

Right after I take
a real quick nap.

Rawlings:
now, according to aaron,

As long as we got the car
off to paint last night,

Which is three days late,
we're still on schedule.

$75,000 Question is
are we on schedule?

Unbelievable.

Yep.

How long did that take?

All of this right here?

From yesterday
around 10:00

Till this morning
around 5:00.

So you didn't go home again?
Where'd you sleep?

Right here.

Feet were
kind of right here

And slept up
over the hump there.

I waited till I got
the rest of it in there.

Finally the body's off to paint.
K.c. Better work fast.

There's only a certain number
of auctions each year

That can handle a car this
special and at this price point.

If I miss this one, I could
be sitting on this car till
next year.

It's about time, man.
Where y'all been?

All right, so this is
how it's gonna look?

Yep.

I like that.

So, paul just came by
with the decals

For the gas monkey swag van.

You kids get your wallets out.

We got everything
in antique white,

Kind of match that old,
faded white look.

All right. Cool.
All right.

Well, you guys know
what you're doing,

So I'll just leave you
to it.

All right.
We'll get it going.

Paul and the guys did
a k*ller job on the van.

I mean, look at it.

The lettering looks right,
all the decals look right.

It's just cool.

Now we only got to sell

I still would have gone
with the b*nditos.

Rawlings:
k.c.'S back today with the body,
and it looks incredible.

We went with a deep maroon color
to give it that sinister look.

But it's not scaring anybody

Sitting out there
on the trailer.

Time to get it off there
and onto the frame.

[Bleep]

All right.

[ Indistinct conversation ]

Whoa, stop, stop, stop.
Almost lost it.

Kaufman: when we pulled the body
off this frame,

Neither one of them
were painted.

Now they both are,
and it's an extremely tight fit.

All right. Let's go.
Square up, k.c.

If we were gonna avoid
scratching up k.c.'S
brand-new paint job,

We're gonna have to use
a high level of strategery.

Mcmillan: oh!

[Bleep]

You all right?

Hope everybody got it.
No.

[Bleep] hold on.
[Bleep]

It's -- it's stuck.

Let it go. Let it go ahead.
There you go.

That's tight.
It's tight.

The '32 ford
finally looks like a car.

But it's a long way
from acting like one.

We've basically got to turn
this maroon box with wheels

Into a running, driving hot rod,

And the worst
part is we've only got a
couple hours to do it in.

Rawlings: this is the most money
I've spent on a car yet.

It happens to be
my favorite one, though.

I know this car's gonna bring
crazy money at the auction,

But the guys got to finish it
tonight, no matter what.

What's up?

I need some door panels
and some carpet.

Where's the door panel?

Well, we made
the door panels for you,

And we ordered a seat
off the internet there.

Why you order --
make your own door panel?

Well, he was already making
the seat for us,

'Cause it's a special seat
to go in this '32.

That's what asm for.
Make a special seat.

That's right. But asm
always complains about it.

This guy didn't complain.
He just made.

Okay, let's talk money.
How much?

Carpet
and two door panels.

How much?

Yeah.
Two grand.

This is the hot rod.

This is the quintessential
american hot rod.

Rawlings:
when we found this car,

It was a chopped
and channeled hot rod.

There was a big question.

Do we put a floor back in it,
do we go back highboy style,

Or do we leave it chopped
and channeled?

Why mess with perfection?

Second only to keeping
the body exactly the same,

The biggest question was
what do we do with the chassis?

Old chassis beat up,
been welded on.

Went ahead and decided to spend
the money after he told me

He wasn't gonna work
on the other one.

The reason this car looks
so beautiful

Is this color
and this slick paint job.

K.c. Absolutely
outdid himself,

And he did it on
the smallest time frame ever.

A lot of guys go
for the ease of driveability

And throw some radial tires
on there.

That's not gonna
fit this car.

We went
with chrome smoothies

And old-school
firestone bias-plys.

The interior is very clean
and very simple.

We think it fits this car
absolutely perfect.

Next comes powertrain.
We went for reliability.

Small-block chevy,
but we dress it up a bit.

Threw a little cam in there
you can't see under the dress.

Put a little stainless
ram horns on there.

Three deuce edelbrock manifold
with three carburetors on it.

Behind that, we put
a 400 turbo transmission

And a nine-inch rear end.

That coupled
with the brakes,

We got us a badass little
hot rod, everyday cruiser.

This car is capable of
putting down a lot of miles

For a lot of years.

The first time I saw it, I hoped
we could build it this nice,

And I'm incredibly proud
of it.

If you knew
what a '32 ford was,

You were shocked when we found
it, and now you want it.

If you didn't know what
a '32 ford was, you do now,

And you still want it.

Man: $140,000, $145,000.

$140,000, Bid me $145,000.

Yours, sold.
Number 10 is the winner.

Well, it's down
to the [bleep] cutting.

We're up here
at auburn, indiana.

Worldwide auctioneers.
I love this event.

They got about 70, 80 of
the nicest fords in the world.

And our ford's
gonna squeeze right in there

With the best of 'em,

And hopefully it'll
bring the money.

$45,750. $46,000.
$46,000.

This place is rocking.
I mean, there's a lot
of money in the room.

Guys are raising their hands.

They're bringing record prices

For almost everything
they're throwing up there.

These cars are in no reserve,

And they're bringing more
than the estimate,

And that just usually
doesn't happen,

So this is a great place
for my '32 ford to be at.

Pretty excited.

Looks like there's a lot
of money in the room.

Hopefully I'm gonna home
with some of it.

Ready to go?
There she is in all her glory.

At least we got
a sunny spot.

Heck, yeah.

Smack dab in the center,
that's awesome.

It looks good.

I don't know, man.

I'm getting a little nervous
now that it's showtime.

It's definitely a lot of money
sitting here.

It's the most money
I ever put in one, man.

This is --
I'm pretty nervous.

As far as a build car,
this '32 ford three window

Is probably the most money
I've ever put into a car.

I've paid more for cars.

But I've never just invested
that much time and effort

With a build of our own.

We got estimated
at 80 to 90 grand.

That's right
where it needs to be.

We pull that kind of money
on it, steak dinner's on me.

It's not that it's
just unnerving for richard,

I'm a little concerned
about it, too.

I mean, we have a lot
of money in the car.

We have a lot of time.

And we have to get that back to
start working on other cars.

That's what
we're after today.

I'm just impressed
that you're actually worried

About my money being
wrapped up in something.

Well, if you lose enough of it,
I'm gonna be out of work.

This is true.
Self-preservation.

[ Laughs ]

I got $54,000
in this car,

And I think we're gonna see
at least 80 grand.

Man: all right, here we go --
what we've been waiting for.

Lot number 38.

Hot rod.

The way a deuce coupe
should be.

This is it.

I got a little tight stomach
today,

'Cause got a lot of money
on the line,

And they're starting
to sell cars,

And no backing out now.

They got the car,
they got the title.

Hopefully they're gonna give me
a bunch of money for it,

But gonna get in there
and see what happens.

Man:
from the gas monkey garage,

Our good friends
in dallas, texas,

A little deuce coupe here.

Who gives $75,000?
Who gives $75,000?

$75,000?
Who gives $30,000?

That's not good.
Starting at $30,000?

And $35,000?

Now $40,000.

Kaufman:
some of my fears are kind of
starting to become reality.

We've started the bidding
exceptionally low on the car.

I'm not really excited
about this

Because when they start low,
they typically end low.

That's not good, man.

Man: $45,000. Now $45,000.

At $45,000, bid $47,000.

At $45,000. $46,000 From ricky.
Now $47,000.

$46,000. Bid me $47,000.

$47,000. $46,000 Is bid.
$47,000.

I'm gonna sell it
tonight, guys.

It's gonna be sold right here,
right now.

$47,000 For the first time.

$47,000 For the second time.
What a buy.

Final call, fair warning,
and i...

Bam, sold, right there,
front row.

Well done, sir.

That'll buy you
some patrón.

How am I feeling?

I'll tell you how I'm feeling.
I feel like [bleep]

That car should have
brought 70 grand.

But I'm not in the business
of holding 'em.

I can't sit around with a room
full of cars like this.

Well, now we've got
to get the money back

So we can move on
to the next one.

End of the day, paid the labor,
kept the shop open.

It sucks a*s, though.

The question is should we
have had a highboy or not?

If it was highboy and open
and no fenders,

I don't think
we would have done any better

Than what you saw here.

I disagree, I think
it would have brought it.

If it was highboy
slammed with fenders,

It would have been
a different story.

But we didn't have fenders
to put on it, so...

I think it would have brought
the money as a highboy.

I mean, not a lot more
but maybe 10 grand more.

I don't know.
Not here.

I do this.

See, when you're in the shop,
building [bleep]

I'm out here
watching this.

And I just watched my a*s
get handed to me on a plate.

Can't keep doing
business this way, aaron.

The shop won't survive.

Narrator: richard bought
the '32 ford for $28,000.

Aaron insisted on a new chassis,

And richard ponied up
for a new engine and tr*nny...

New wheels and tires...
A custom floor...

And new interior...
And a new paint job.

His staggering investment --
$54,000.

But at auction, the ford sold

For a disappointing $46,000.

Richard was given
an '89 dodge shelby truck...

And discovered helping kids
is priceless.

And he plunked down 4 grand
for the swag wagon.

But he's already working on
a plan to get that money back.

This week, despite a lot
of heavy lifting,

Gas monkey's profit
was down in the dumps.

It's boxed like hell.

Kaufman:
whenever richard and I argue,

My thoughts always turn
to the kids.

I don't want them
to see us argue

And see that we can't put up
a -- a solid front,

Something that they can count on
will always be there.

I don't want them to think,

"Who am I gonna spend
christmas with?

Will it be richard,
or will it be aaron?"

I don't want them
to know the troubles

That we go through to provide
the life that they have.

So I don't like them
to see the arguing.

But sometimes it's necessary.
