Narrator:
right now on "fast n' loud"...
Hot-rod hunter richard rawlings
And his master mechanic,
aaron kaufman,
Scour the countryside
for a rust bucket they
can turn into gold...
Here we go.
...and find it
with a 1950s oldsmobile coupe.
I'm like, "whoo!" I wanted
to jump and yell and scream.
Oh, yeah!
Narrator:
but back at the garage,
They realize why this racer
was left at the starting line
I don't think this car is gonna
make it back on the road
With this motor.
Then...
Holy [bleep]
The guys get slammed
with a junker caddy...
So, we got to have seats
and a top, and we got to --
One thing --
I only got two hands.
...they need to transform
into a route 66 joyride
With two aussies
who are ready to party...
Texas-style.
[Bleep] yeah!
And richard's plans
to make some quick money
Flipping this classic chevy...
All right, let's get
the [bleep] cutting. What is it?
I think around 15 grand.
...crashes and burns.
No, no, no, no,
no, no, no, no, no.
No.
Ha, here comes the aussies'
cadillac, aaron.
Kaufman: cool.
You didn't tell me
it was a nascar.
They're all
indianapolis 500 racecars.
[ Laughs ]
These aussies call me
like three days ago.
They say, "hey, richard,
we bought a cadillac,
And we're gonna send it
to you.
We want you to fix it,
Then we want to drive it
across america."
Wow!
They told me it was freakin'
rough, but I don't know.
Rawlings: they must've been
totally hammered
When they bought this car.
They said they paid
like 5 or 6 grand for it.
I wouldn't give 500 bucks
for it.
Missing top,
missing the seat,
Missing the backseat,
missing the taillight lens.
Totally [bleep]
I'm surprised it's even got
four wheels on it.
The car's missing
basically all of it.
Kaufman: '73 cadillac eldorado
shows up this morning.
I heard it was coming,
But I really didn't know
much about it.
So, it gets here, and it's --
it's as whorish as I imagined.
Does it run?
I don't know.
Rawlings:
man, I'm only getting $4,200
for this and two days to do it.
The car is in
such piss-poor condition,
I'll be lucky to break even.
Well, it's got
chrome valve covers. [ Laughs ]
I wouldn't expect anything less
out of a pace car.
These guys are crazy. I've only
talked to them on the phone.
I don't think
we've ever met them.
Like, drooling on themselves,
biting their ears kind of crazy?
They're from the outback.
I mean, who knows?
But they're like,
"man, we're gonna come party.
We're gonna do all this.
We're gonna do that."
I'm like, "come on.
You ain't teaching me
anything I don't know."
So, these guys think they party.
They're like, "oh, we're
from australia. We drink this.
We do that.
We sh**t dingoes.
We box with kangaroos
and [bleep]
I'm like, "I don't care, dude.
You're coming to texas.
You're coming to see
the gas monkey.
I'm gonna wear you
[bleep] smooth out."
What do you think about
a set of horns on the front?
We're gonna make it run.
It's gonna go, it's gonna stop,
And maybe it'll go and stop
for about 1,500 miles,
And in that case, then this
works out well for everybody.
Let's get this piece of [bleep]
out of our way for now.
Let's get it over
to the upholsterer
And get seats in it
and a top in it and be done.
I'm tired of looking at it.
Yeah, I'm tired
of the way it smells.
Let me show you
what I got.
These crazy australians
called me.
They said
they bought a cadillac.
They're gonna drive it
all the way out route 66.
I got no seat...
No seat.
...no top...
Okay.
...and one day.
One day?
One day.
That's hard for me.
She's always like,
"richard, you go too much.
You want too much money.
You're too fast. I can't do it."
You always do this to me
every time.
Gas monkey's fast and loud,
So we got to have seats
and a top, and we got to --
One thing --
I only got two hands.
He want me to do it in one day.
It's a 10-day job.
Ridiculous.
Oh, that looks so crazy.
My god, look at this,
look at this.
You want me to do it
in one day?
Always argue about price,
very cheap.
He wants you to do it
very, very fast.
So, what do you think
it's gonna cost me
For the top and the seats?
Top and the seats --
what else?
That's it for now.
That's it for now.
Gonna cost you $2,000.
$2,000.
Oh, come on,
I always divide in half.
Oh, yeah.
He's crazy.
That's why he called gas monkey.
He crazy like monkey.
All right, sue,
so, I trust you.
I'm gonna leave you with
this awesome piece of [bleep]
And I'm gonna come back and get
an awesome piece of [bleep]
With some seats
and a top.
Okay.
All right,
see you later.
Bye.
Rawlings: this aussie build's
costing way more than expected.
I didn't expect 2 grand
on the seats.
That's over half the budget.
So, while sue's working
on the interior,
Aaron and I are gonna out
and try to find that big build
For the week that'll
put some money in the bank.
You and I
both grew up here.
But I got you beat
by a decade or so,
So I'm gonna take you
to a few places
Where I think there might
still be some cars
That I saw
when I was really young.
What makes you think
there are still cars here?
I don't know. I mean,
you know how this goes.
These cars sit forever.
Here it is.
How you doing, sir?
Coy: good.
Look like you got
a few old cars here.
Yeah, I got a whole lot
full of them over here.
Well, let's take a look
at what you got.
So, I'm walking around,
and immediately,
Plymouth savoy --
that caught my eye.
That a plymouth?
Coy: yeah, that's
a '57 plymouth savoy.
It's low mileage.
It belonged to a pastor.
Pastor?
Yeah.
Like a preacher?
Yeah.
Oh, man. Preacher's daughters
are awesome.
[ Laughs ]
push-button tr*nny.
That's kind of cool.
I like to push the buttons
on my tr*nny.
How come the push-button
tr*nnies never stuck?
I don't know why.
They're so easy.
I just don't know
if we can do anything with it.
It's kind of an odd car.
Well, let's see here --
too new, too red.
Tell me about this impala.
Well, never mind.
It's too missing.
Yeah!
There's no hood.
It's just gone.
[ Imitates whirring ]
Does it come
with a discount
If it doesn't have a door handle
to get out?
No,
you just got to stay.
Or figure out
how to drive it home from there.
[ Laughs ]
Rawlings: I guess they're
just gonna talk about the car
And leave me in here.
It's all right.
You think I could get out?
[ Laughs ]
So, I'm sitting here
locked in this truck,
Thinking I'm striking out,
and then I saw it.
Caught my eye like a pretty girl
across the room.
Tell me what
we're looking at here.
This looks like some kind of
presidential car or whatever.
That's what it was. It's out
of the john kennedy estate.
Out of
john kennedy's estate?
So, has it got
all the paperwork
That actually shows it came
from the kennedy compound?
It got all
the presidential flags.
It got everything
that goes with it --
The two-way radios,
the whole bit.
Coy: I showed richard
the cadillac.
It's not my car.
It belongs to some
personal friends of mine.
Hold on, I think
the president's calling.
[ Laughs ]
Yes, sir, right away.
I'll be right there.
The one thing
that intrigued me the most --
And I promise you this --
When I leaned in to check
the little motorola phone --
They had a car phone.
I smelled it.
I did, too.
Marilyn monroe --
I smelled her in there.
I'd be interested in knowing
if he'd sell this car.
Coy: yeah,
I'll let you know.
'Cause we can do
a restoration on that,
Put it back
to its former glory.
Maybe you could call him
before we leave.
Rawlings:
if this car's the real deal,
I can make a ton of money.
Bottom line, though,
research is really important,
So I'm gonna call
my collector friend dennis.
He can run the v.i.n. Number
for me,
And we can find out
if it's really jfk's.
If it is,
I could potentially make
a few hundred thousand dollars.
Got my hot, little a*s
on a '61 cadillac limo.
It is out of the kennedy estate
with paperwork,
Has all the original flags
that flown in the front of it.
It's got
the motorola crazy phone
And all the two-way radios and
the big antenna and all that.
Pretty rundown but not apart.
And it's a newer plate --
l86-hkz.
Dennis: larry 86,
henry, kite, zebra.
Yes.
Oh, hey, lee.
What'd your guy say
about this car?
Did you get ahold of him?
No, I didn't get ahold of him
yet. I left a message.
He'll give me a call back.
It may be today,
or it may be tomorrow.
I can't always get ahold of him,
but...
Well, I'll leave you my number
for sure.
This is real interesting
to me.
I've got another friend
of mine running the
v.i.n. Number real fast.
If it proves to be
part of the kennedy estate,
It might be a car
I'd want.
This is a really big catch
if we can land it,
But the story's got to be true.
But, most importantly, he's got
to be willing to sell it.
Rawlings: while we wait to hear
about the jfk limo,
I've got to find a project
That's gonna make gas monkey
some money,
And I've got one more lead
to follow up on.
One of our finders has located
a 1950 oldsmobile coupe.
Rawlings: we've never had
one of these at the shop.
It was -- it was the car
of its time.
Everybody had to have one,
and they were fast.
This was the coolest car
back in the day.
I mean, this car was k*lling
everybody else in nascar.
It had
the big rocket 88 motor.
This looks like
the right road, man.
This is badass.
I can see you're enthusment
just oozing out of your body.
They make penicillin
for that.
Kaufman:
richard's always getting
excited about these leads,
But when we get there,
We find out that
the owner misrepresented it
Or just didn't understand
what they had,
Or it's really just
a rusted-out piece of junk.
So now I just kind of wait
till I see it for myself.
Case in point,
if these rusted-out bodies
Are any indication
of what I'm about to see,
I'd rather just sleep
in the truck.
What's up?
I think this is the place,
aaron.
I like the bob-wire stuff
there.
You must be don.
I'm don.
Richard rawlings,
gas monkey garage.
Nice to meet you.
Aaron.
Nice to meet you.
Schafer:
when I met richard and aaron,
They looked like
the typical hot-rod guys --
Somebody that'd probably
be interested in an old '50.
They looked like
they were all right.
You're don, but the shirt says,
"rick's place."
Yeah, that's --
that's my best friend.
That was his garage
up in new york.
Looks like
he was into oldsmobiles.
Yes, sir.
Yes, sir, indeed.
That's cool, that's cool.
We're here to say an oldsmobile.
Heard you got a '50.
Yeah, as a matter of fact,
I do.
Well, I got to see it.
Right over here.
Rawlings:
so, don's leading us through
his wasteland of old cars
And junk and collectible crap.
I don't know. But I saw
a building in the back.
Somebody finally
had the common sense
To put a '50 olds up for
That's what I'm hoping for.
Here you go.
[Bleep] yeah! Whoo!
When he opened up that door,
I literally [bleep] my pants.
Wow.
I'm like, "whoo!"
You know, I wanted to jump
and yell and scream
And hand him some money
and run off with the car.
Rawlings: so, here we are
in nowhere, texas, right?
I'm not sure what I'm gonna see,
but this guy takes me out back.
He's got an old garage and in it
a '50 oldsmobile coupe.
Don, tell me why
you have this car here.
It was my dad's.
He bought it in 1954.
No kidding.
So, was your dad, like,
a hot-rodder or --
That's what these cars
were.
I mean, I've studied up
on them before,
And, I mean, they came out
with this basic car in '49,
And they just started
taking over everything.
The olds rocket 88
was known as the king of nascar.
It was built
with a lightweight frame
And a powerful overhead
valve v-8 engine,
Giving it a lot of muscle.
Between 1949 and 1952,
It won more nascar races
than any other auto,
And america loved it.
Can we uncover it
and take a look at it?
Sure.
All right, let's get some
of this stuff off of here.
Schafer: my dad was always good
about taking care of his cars.
It stayed in the garage
most of the time.
So, did your dad do
any crazy modifications
Or anything like that?
Pretty much all like it was.
Wow!
That's so cool.
I love it
when they're just stock.
Stock, a couple rat turds.
Yeah.
Those are original rat turds.
They might be.
[ Laughs ]
You know what, don?
I want to sit in this thing.
I got to see how it feels.
It's dusty, dirty, but --
I don't care.
I've been dirty before.
I've been dirty
in a lot of places.
Wow!
That is friggin' cool.
Nothing's broken, though, aaron.
Look at all the trim.
I mean,
the headlight bezels,
The bumpers have
some dings in it,
But that's surely
not a big deal.
Everything's here.
So, don,
how old are you?
I'm 51.
That makes it '61
when you were born?
Yeah.
Think him and your mom were
maybe hitting up the drive-in
And you came along
in the front seat here?
Well, you never know.
You know, don,
I'm happy just to see it,
But, you know,
I want to take it home.
Yeah.
What's it gonna take
to take it off your hands?
You know, you knew don
was attached to the car.
You know, like aaron said,
it's part of the family,
And we really had to
treat that delicately.
It'd be a crazy price,
but...
Well, you know, we're not in
the business of bottom feeding.
I'm not out here trying to
cheat people out of their cars.
I want to give a fair price
for a good car,
So I expect you'd probably
have a decent price on it.
I'm kind of just wondering
what that is.
Well, the crazy price
would be $10,000.
Why did I know
he was gonna say that?
Why did I know that?
Don threw out a number
of $10,000,
And I think
it's a fair number
But not in the condition
the car's sitting.
What do you think, aaron?
I sure do like it.
I don't like it 10 grand,
but I sure do like it.
I got to drag it out.
I got to get running.
There's no telling
what I'm gonna have in to it.
And you know
how these things go, you know?
Oh, they stack up like crazy.
Don, I'm thinking
like maybe 5 grand.
But I got it cash right now.
Uh...
I'd have to --
I'd have to get $7,500 anyway.
You adding?
You need to take your boots off
and use your toes?
We're not going that high.
[ Sighs ]
I could probably do
the $7,500, don,
If I knew for a fact that you
were conceived in this thing.
[ Laughs ]
I'd probably do it.
That would be cool,
But I'll tell you,
I got 7 grand in my pocket.
I can't confirm the --
The conception story?
Yeah, yeah.
So...
I guess I could do that.
That's awesome.
I guess we got us a '50 olds.
You got 7 grand.
Thank you, sir.
So, we did a little back
and forth, a little haggling,
Settled in at 7 grand,
and that was a good deal for me.
We'll give you
a few minutes with it.
All right.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Schafer: kind of have
mixed emotions about selling it
But sounds like
they're gonna take care of it.
They're gonna put it on the road
where it needs to be.
I hope they fix it right.
I think they will.
We're here to, you know,
get it back on the road
And make it into that awesome
vehicle that it used to be.
Try and [exhales deeply]
breathe new life into it.
[ Laughs ]
Hell yeah.
We are here with a '50 olds.
What do you think about that?
Not bad.
That's
pretty sweet.
Don did us right on this one.
It's a '50 olds coupe.
It's k*ller.
It's 303 rocket 88.
This was the coolest ride out
As far as I'm concerned
from '50 to '54.
I don't know.
What are you thinking, aaron?
I'm thinking just,
we got to stay true to the car.
We just get her fired back up
and get her slammed,
Change the wheels and tires
on it.
I think we're gonna have
a heck of a lot of fun.
Plan on the car is just change
the wheels up a little bit.
It's still gonna be
steel, chrome,
A little bit wider
in the rear.
We're gonna slam it down.
We're gonna soup up the motor
and radial tires.
Other than that, I mean, the car
is just too cool the way it is
To really mess it up
too much.
Casey, what do you think
about the paint?
Rawlings: I can tell you,
casey's got a great eye,
And I'm always interested
to hear what he has to say
about the look of the car.
I say, let's just throw a coat
of flat-clear on it, man.
That'll bring out the original
blue color a lot, right?
Oh, yeah. Yeah, it'll lose all
its oxidization on top of it.
All we're doing is just
making a light preservation
For what's here,
And, honestly,
that goes further to me
Than putting some weird color
that we think is cool on it
Or getting into
a real serious paint job.
I absolutely adore
the way it looks right now,
And it took a long time
to get that way,
So we can't replicate it.
So what I wanted to do
was preserve the patina on it.
It's absolutely perfect,
and this way,
It allows us to touch the car,
drive the car, wash the car
Without damaging the patina
further.
I think that's a badass
plan, guys -- I mean,
low, lean, slick.
Now aaron and I have a plan
for our big build.
I know from experience
that a car with this
kind of modifications
Will bring 20 to 25 grand.
That means I've only got five
days of labor on this project
To clear a profit.
We're off to the races.
Let's go.
Hey, if something gives you
trouble, just hit it real hard.
Hey, scot,
why don't you go ahead
And let's get started
on the motor?
So just go ahead
and yank drive shafts,
Start doing coolant lines.
Just get that thing ready
to come out.
All right.
Well, basically, what I'm trying
to find right now
Is a set
of, like, texas longhorns
To put on the front of that
cadillac for these aussie guys.
They gave me carte blanche
to do whatever I want,
So we're gonna jack
this thing up proper.
I don't even know
what we would look under
To make sure that we have it.
We looked under antiques,
Video gaming,
tools, jewelry, furniture.
Well, they have
an actual whole longhorn steer
That we can buy alive.
[Bleep] yeah! [ Laughs ]
Let's just put -- let's just
put him in the car with them.
[ Laughs, coughs ]
What up, sue?
Martin: what's up?
It's not --
the top's not on.
I don't know.
What's the problem?
You're too rush.
Did you get lost?
Yeah, you're too rush.
I'm always in a hurry.
You know that, and you don't
even have the top on.
[ Taps ] snap, snap.
I got my sign guy here.
He's gonna put down some stuff
'cause these crazy australians
Said that I could put
whatever I want to on the car.
So we're gonna lay down some
monkeys, lay down some logos,
And I'm trying to find
a set of horns for the front.
You don't have any extra
longhorn horns laying around,
Do you?
No, I don't have it.
I own upholstery shop.
Did I look like
I have longhorn on me?
Cool.
Let's lay it down.
Yeah, yeah, yeah!
This is gonna be frickin' nuts!
Heck yeah. Look at that.
You know, it seems like
a pretty psycho thing to do,
Telling me I can do
whatever I want to to your car.
That's the gas monkey style,
though.
When I do a car for a customer,
We decide on a couple of things,
and then it's mine.
I'm gonna do it my way. That's
what they're paying me for.
Man, the aussies are gonna be
freaking out when they see this.
What do you think, sue?
That monkey
got long tongue.
[ Laughs ]
[ Tool whirring ]
So, things are really jamming
back at the shop.
The aussie car is over at sue's,
getting the interior done.
The guys are tearing
the oldsmobile apart.
So I have some time
for a road trip.
Friend of mine told me about
a guy collects '55s,
And he might want to sell
some of them.
I'm gonna bust over there,
go see what he's got.
Hello? Anybody here?
Young: yeah.
Oh, hey, sir. How you doing?
Richard rawlings.
Came up a very long driveway,
found a pretty cool cat.
He's a big hunter, fisher,
all that kind of stuff.
This guy just showed up
and asked me if I had any '55s.
Hope you don't mind
I came on up the driveway.
Didn't read
the "private drive" sign?
I did see it, but when
you're hunting cars like this,
You know, you got to
take your chances.
You saw me.
I was real scared at first.
I was like,
"where's the g*n, you know?"
You got to make sure
there's no g*ns and stuff.
You got any other cars
for sale?
I got plenty back here
and plenty out in
the other building.
You got plenty of '55s?
Yeah, come on.
Holy cow, I just stumbled across
a bunch of '55s.
Check that out.
I got a '58 suburban.
You got a tractor, too.
[Bleep]
Yeah,
I use that on my farm.
This is one
of those radio-com jeeps.
So it's got
the bigger alternator, I bet.
What kind of money do you want
for something like this?
I got a friend of mine
that does these things.
Young: $2,500.
No kidding?
That might be good.
I got a two-door hardtop here
that I bought,
Waiting to put it
on the restoration.
I'm really impressed
With this dude's collection
of tri-five chevys.
And over in the corner,
'55 hardtop bel air,
That's the car
I want to talk about.
Wow.
It's a good-looking car.
I got brand-new flippers
for the doors.
This is the old
hot rod 327.
Cool.
'55 Bel airs were the most
popular car purchase that year.
They had a cool
wraparound windshield,
And people just loved them.
They're really hard to find
nowadays,
But I have a buyer I know
who's always looking for them.
This might be a quick flip
for me.
What kind of money
would be a car like this?
I'd like to at least get $12,000
for it.
[ Exhales sharply ]
But I can be
negotiated with.
All right.
Well, I priced the thing
for $12,000,
But then he came back
and offered me $10,000 for it,
And I said
I'd probably take that.
I really like it, and you said
you'd go 10 grand on that car?
I think I'll take that car.
All right.
I'm really glad I got this '55,
But aaron just called me
from back in the garage.
Things aren't going
as smoothly as planned.
Kaufman: my feeling at this
point is, is that there's been
A couple generations of rats
living in the motor.
I don't think this car is gonna
make it back on the road
With this motor
anytime soon.
[ Sighs ]
Kaufman: I don't think
this car is gonna make
it back on the road
With this motor
anytime soon.
I think this is
a bit of a lost cause
For our time frame
that we have.
For the shop to make money
on this car,
We have to keep our labor costs
as low as possible.
If we have to build that motor,
There's no telling
how expensive it's gonna be.
Rawlings:
if I get this thing torn down
And I've got, you know,
gets torn down --
Oh, you can't even put a cap
on it. There's no engine.
Yeah, there's no stopping.
I'll have 2 grand in it
just for teardown,
And then they're gonna go,
"Oh, you need this,
and you need that."
This sucks.
I only budgeted five days
for this project,
And if I got to pull
the motor out and tear it apart,
Then I got to rebuild it.
I don't know how long
that's gonna take.
This is the kind of thing
that's gonna k*ll the resto
And k*ll my budget.
[Bleep]
I know, I know.
Well, so,
what do you suggest?
I think we go with
just a brand-new crate 350,
Four barrel, something
with a little horsepower,
Automatic tr*nny.
You know, just --
I hate to do it to this car,
But this could literally
Take all of the profit
out of the car.
I generally like to keep
the cars as original as possible
Because
that's what our buyers like.
In this case,
I think replacing the engine
is gonna save us a lot of money.
Really sucks, though.
There goes some monies.
Hey, boss, just stand
right there and watch.
Yeah.
Now we got to go up.
We're gonna have to
push harder.
Okay.
Whoa!
Let it down
before it tips.
Rawlings:
it's a really hard decision
to replace the motor on this,
But it has to be done.
Now that I got to
shell out 4 grand more,
I'm gonna have to watch
the time and labor on this one,
Or I'm gonna lose money.
Kaufman: pull the motor out,
And we're gonna start degreasing
the fire wall and the frame.
It's been leaking oil for a
long time, so it's a nasty mess.
So the first thing we're gonna
do is pressure-wash it,
Go off to paint,
And should be looking good
next time you see it.
Mathieu: my biggest concern
is the rat [bleep] smell.
Right now, I'm trying to get rid
of the rat-feces smell
And pee smell
So I don't throw up
while I'm working on it.
Maybe it'll smell better.
Rawlings:
so, I just got off the phone
With the guys that had
the jfk limo at their place.
Owner doesn't want to sell it.
Get this --
he wants to be buried in it.
Now I've heard it all.
Kaufman: the olds has been
washed inside and out.
Casey's getting ready
to lay down a coat of clear.
People might think
this car looks rusty,
But a patina finish is wildly
popular in the car world.
We're gonna clear-coat
the whole thing just as it is
'Cause we think
it fits us perfectly
And think it looks even better
on the car.
Once the exterior
is clear-coated,
Casey's gonna paint the dash
two-tone blue and white.
Richard and I think it's
really gonna pop the interior,
Give this car a great style.
Mathieu: all right,
there we go -- two-tone dash.
[ Car horn honking ]
[ Laughs ]
Rawlings:
now the car's been painted,
We're gonna push it over to
sue's and get the interior done.
As usual, she's happy to see me.
Rawlings:
you got the whole car.
You're good to go.
There's all
the headliner bows,
And I brought you
the sun visors, right?
Oh, my god.
And then the kick panels
are still here.
It goes all the way up
underneath there.
The rest should
just go together.
Martin: a lot of work to do.
He's crazy.
Thank you.
See you in a couple hours.
Ridiculous.
Just waiting
on my aussie friends.
[ Laughing ] hey, richard.
You must be
from australia.
Hey.
How you doing, brother?
I'm richard.
Dino.
Dino.
Tony.
How are you, mate?
Man,
you're a big [bleep]
And you're all right
yourself.
Holy cow!
Welcome to texas, man.
Sit down, please.
So, what the hell?
You called me last week.
You say, "hey,
we're gonna go ride route 66
In a frickin' eldo,
and we're send it to you.
Make sure it's road ready."
And you send me this.
Plan is, we're gonna get the car
from you if it's ready -- if.
It'll be ready.
It'll be ready,
be all good?
When do you have to have it by?
I need about seven more weeks.
Excellent.
We'll be there tomorrow.
Tomorrow will be fine --
about 9:15.
[ Laughs ]
All right, well,
we're gonna have a little fun.
Tomorrow morning?
I'd better get these guys
good and drunk
So they're too hungover
to leave.
Here's
to gas monkey garage.
Absolutely.
Your [bleep] eldo.
Oh!
Suck my [bleep]
I'm not
sucking your [bleep]
I'm not even drinking to that.
What the hell's wrong with you?
[ Laughs ]
We're picking this car up.
We're driving to chicago.
We're visiting elvis
on the way.
We might even visit
nashville.
I love elvis' mother.
Rawlings: it's day three
of the olds build.
We got the paint done,
the interior done.
It's like a nascar --
got to push it.
I can't wait to see
what that thing looks like.
Come on.
Is it ready?
That's good.
Who's driving this thing?
I don't know, but two fools
were just pushing it.
Kaufman:
did someone scare the seats?
[ Laughs ]
'Cause all the color
ran out of them.
Looks pretty good. The
interior's in it, paint's done.
Well, you know what?
I think it'll look a lot
better going down the road
than sitting out here.
Let's put it inside.
Now that we got
the oldsmobile back,
Our primary concern
is getting it slammed
and getting it stopped.
And getting it stopped
means putting new brakes on it.
We've already got our brake kit,
so we're gonna have to
Pull the drums off,
inspect those, put them back on.
Who said "we"?
I don't have to
do any of that, do i?
Well, you're not involved
in "we."
Yeah, I'm not in "we."
Y'all are "we's."
You're not included in the "we."
[ Laughs ]
Really planning on today
being a great day.
We've got all the parts,
got all the people.
We've got enough time,
So we ought to have
a really good day today.
Mcmillan:
right now, I'm finishing up the
brake job on the '50 oldsmobile.
It's got four-drum brakes,
So there's lots
of miscellaneous shoes
And springs
and all this kind of stuff
That we got to put together.
It just takes a lot longer,
But in the end,
you got to have brakes.
That's how you rebuild
a drum brake.
[ Grunts ]
[ Sighs ]
We're here
to pick up our car today.
We actually don't know
what it looks like.
We don't know
what he's done.
We've given him full license
to do whatever he wants.
So it could
have anything on it.
Hopefully, it'll be good.
Rawlings:
the friggin' car these guys flew
thousands of miles to drive
Isn't even ready,
And I've got to distract them
to buy my guys some time
So they can get it back
from sue's
And get to working
on the motor.
Hey, hey, hey.
Well, uh, the car's not ready,
So you ever shot
a machine g*n before?
In texas, there's only
a few things to do,
And one of them
is sh**ting g*ns.
I know for a fact
You can't get your hands
on a machine g*n in australia,
So I'm gonna take them
to meet my friend a.k. Dave.
He's an instructor and
a manufacturer of machine g*ns.
Welcome to texas, mates.
[ Both laugh ]
Rawlings: what's up, dave?
How you been, man?
Dave: what's up, brother?
How you doing?
You got the goods?
Yes, sir, I do.
You got the cash?
[Bleep]
I brought a stack of it.
Let's do it.
[ Machine-g*n fire ]
[ Laughter ]
Bam, bam, bam!
Man! Whoo-hoo-hoo!
[ Machine-g*n fire ]
[ Laughter ]
Go ahead
and pull the r*fle up.
Nice straight finger.
Get comfy with it.
Tony: back in australia,
our g*n laws are pretty strict.
You know, we fire a few r*fles,
but to have ak-47s and 74s
And just sh**ting stuff,
oh, far-out.
Fantastic!
[ g*nshots ]
Dino:
absolutely fantastic.
A.k. Dave was awesome, and
the guys from gas monkey rock.
[ g*nsh*t ]
[ g*nshots ]
Yeah! Whoo!
[ Laughs ]
What did the kangaroo do to you,
man? He's going down!
[ Laughs ]
Today was a good day --
sh**t some g*ns.
Yeah. Let's get them
off on the right foot.
[ Laughter ]
I think I got
a couple more b*ll*ts.
[ r*fle c*ck ]
Whoo!
We do this [bleep]
every day.
Rawlings: we're really
having fun with the aussies.
I just hope scot got
their car picked up from sue's
And got it back to
the gas monkey garage
and got it running.
If anything else
goes wrong,
I don't know how
we're gonna top machine g*ns.
Richard got this car back.
We got the --
he got the top done.
Yep,
she made it look good.
The seat's done.
Now we got to
get this thing running.
We got about 30 minutes
to do it.
What do you think?
Well, hit the button.
Hit the button.
I'll pop the hood.
All right, let's do it.
Mcmillan: richard and aaron
rely on me a lot
To get these things done
while they're gone.
They left me with a big task.
Thankfully, I got phipps here
to help me out
And get things moving along.
He's a great old mechanic.
And we'll get it knocked out.
Spin it over.
[ Engine sputtering ]
[ Engine turns over ]
Oh, yeah!
Come on, caddy, purr!
Man, that's a huge relief.
It's a great deal for richard.
They'll get back.
They'll be able to get in
the car and take it for a spin.
[ Engine revs ]
Oh, we do?
Yeah, we're blowing fuel
out of the tailpipe.
Let's figure out what
the [bleep] is going on here.
Lift it up for me.
Hold on, hold on, hold on.
This is a whole new problem
we didn't anticipate.
We don't have time to fix it.
You know what I noticed when
I was down there watching tv?
Australians think that texas
is a different country
than the united states.
Rawlings: so, we're on our back
to gas monkey with the aussies
After blowing some stuff up,
right?
sh**ting g*ns --
that was a good time.
I just hope
scot has that cadillac ready
By the time we get there.
[ Engine revving ]
Yeah, we're blowing fuel
out of the tailpipe.
Mcmillan:
richard just called. He's
on his way with the aussies.
The problem is,
it's still got a fuel leak.
I'm freaking out.
We got to get this thing ready
before they get here.
So,
we're gonna plug it off
And figure out
where it's coming from,
Then we'll plug it off
on the other end
And keep going
until it quits leaking.
Cross your fingers.
Plug it up, but where
is all the fuel gonna
go after we plug it up?
I don't know.
We'll find out here in a minute.
Thankfully,
I got phipps to help me out
'Cause he's got all
the knowledge that I'm missing.
I'm so relieved.
We found a leak
in one of the fuel lines.
We fixed it.
All right,
fire in the hole.
Okay.
[ Engine turns over ]
Started itself.
Phipps finesse.
Phipps finesse!
I looked under the car --
no more leaks.
Got the car finished
just in the nick of time.
I can do doughnuts
in this car.
[ Laughs ]
Rawlings:
so, here it is, guys.
One slightly modified
'73 eldorado convertible.
Gas monkey gear on it.
In all
its '73 stinkin' glory.
[ Laughter ]
Dino: bloody hell!
Tony: seriously,
this is awesome.
Look at that.
What is that?
Big monkey on the front.
Got a tank, new carburetor,
mostly new interior, new top.
New monkey.
New monkey.
Rawlings:
you know, with the time we had,
I think we did a bang-up job.
I just wish we could've gotten
the longhorns.
They kept on telling us that
there were things wrong with it.
I got to tell you,
it's beautiful, mate.
It's absolutely beautiful.
It's a cr*cker.
You couldn't ask
for a better car.
And it's covered
in gas monkey decals.
Love what you've done, guys --
absolutely fantastic.
Let's get your guys' luggage
and get you on the road.
Rawlings:
gonna send these guys off
gas monkey-style.
Me and aaron are gonna
follow them to the city
limits on our motorcycles.
Once they're out
of the city limits,
I don't have to worry about it
anymore. They're on their own.
Kaufman:
never in a million years
when I saw that thing roll in
Did I think
we could get it running
And then find someone
to love it.
Bottom line, we got
the car running and driving,
And we still turned a profit.
The aussies are on their way
down route 66 and just in time.
We just found out
we got a potential buyer
On the '50 olds
coming by the shop tomorrow.
Now I'm really
feeling the pressure
On getting that olds done.
Kaufman: guys, I guess
we're all ready to go,
So go ahead and throw the motor
and trans in.
Awesome.
Let's get started.
We ended up getting a new motor
for the olds.
Just didn't feel with the
time frame we had and the budget
That we could restore
the original motor correctly,
And so we went ahead
and got a new one.
I'm afraid that it's
a little bit of a turnoff
For a serious collector,
But sometimes
you just have to roll the dice
And see how it works out.
Kaufman: all right, guys,
that looks good.
Let's get
those motor mounts on.
Rawlings: hey, aaron,
come check this out.
You need me to show you
how to plug that in?
See, this is
what you don't see a lot
'Cause you're always in there
doing the work.
Are you plugging stuff in?
No, you got to see
where the good money is.
This car is perfect
already.
I'm just gonna buff up
this hood ornament.
I got a guy coming.
I guarantee you he buys it.
All right,
we'll see how that goes.
Look at that.
That's all you need to do --
Throw a little gas monkey shine
on it.
I'll check on you in
a little bit and see
if you sold it or not.
All right, cool.
I got my buddy thomas
coming over.
He's gonna check out the '55 bel
air I got on my trip up north
For 10 grand.
I know this is the car he wants.
If we can negotiate a price,
I'll get some quick money
on a quick flip.
[ Car horn honks ]
Hey, man, what's up?
What's up?
Are you hiding in there from me?
Rawlings: hell yeah.
Oh, man.
Weeks:
richard called me up and said
he had a great car out here,
That I had to come see it.
The minute I pulled up,
I was like, "oh, my gosh,
I can't believe it's
a '55 chevrolet sports coupe."
Well, let's see what we got.
First year of the v-8.
We got that.
We got a good color,
which is black.
We got the two-door hardtop,
which is even better.
Look at that
hood ornament.
Oh, that thing shines
like a diamond in a goat's a*s.
I can't believe it --
the hood ornament.
Best investment ever --
That buffer that I just shined
this hood ornament up with.
Just don't see a lot
in that style.
Windshield's good, and the
fenders are all there, richard.
Yep.
No chrome.
Look at the trim.
That's one reason
that I liked it.
It has all its trim.
All its stainless is there.
All right, let's get to
the [bleep] cutting. What is it?
I think around 15 grand.
No, no, no, no,
no, no, no, no, no.
I know you. $10,000.
[Bleep] that, dude.
Weeks:
we've done this so many times.
We just pretty much know
About what each other
will pay for a car.
You know me
and you go straight deals.
I said $15,000.
You said $10,000.
Now we're gonna to $12,500,
And then I know you're gonna
beat me a little bit,
So why don't we just say
Final price on the car
was $12,000,
And I think it's a fantastic
price for that vehicle.
$12,000.
I love you, man. You bought
my car for me. Thank you.
Cool. Thank you.
Now you get to load it,
and I get to go drink beer.
Yes, you do. Game over.
Cool.
Rawlings:
that's what I'm talking about --
Worth of buffing.
That's a good day
at gas monkey garage.
Kaufman:
so, we're doing really well
on the oldsmobile today.
We've got the engine installed.
We're all wired.
We've only got
one thing left to do,
And that's
put the back tires on.
Normally,
this would be a no-brainer,
But as I'm looking up,
I can tell things
aren't measuring up right.
See,
to enhance the look of the car,
I bought bigger wheels and tires
than the originals.
They're not quite fitting
in the wheel well.
So I've got two options.
I can either send back
the wheels and tires
And get smaller ones that fit
Or I can modify the wheel wells
To take the tires
we already have.
Problem is, though,
it'll cost us more time,
Which ultimately is more money.
So either way I go,
it's gonna be out of pocket
Or out of clock --
one of the two.
I'll talk to richard
and see if he wants to do it.
If richard likes it
And he's willing to spend
the extra couple hours on it,
Then we'll go ahead
and leave them,
Just modify the wheel well.
If he doesn't like it
and wants to just save these
For another project,
we'll get two more
wheels and tires coming.
Rawlings: [bleep] how much time
is that gonna add?
Oh, take me a couple hours
to cut it out
And probably another couple
hours to weld on the pieces.
I have a potential buyer
coming in tomorrow,
And I don't have time
to order new wheels.
So aaron's gonna have
to make it work with
the tires that we have,
And if he has to work all night,
That's what
he's gonna have to do.
[ Tool whirring ]
Mcmillan: back in the day,
People could only afford
to have a truck or a car.
A lot of families
didn't really need a truck.
Once the cars started
getting the engines big enough
To tow trailers,
A lot of people were putting
homemade trailer hitches
On their cars
So that they could use their car
as a truck.
Part about making cars
faster and louder
Is removing all this
unnecessary weight and ugliness
'Cause we just don't need them
anymore on hot rods.
[ Engine turns over ]
Rawlings:
I'm really excited aaron and
the guys finished the oldsmobile
Last night.
It's time for me and richard to
take the car for a test-drive,
See if it runs
as good as it looks.
This is a badass car.
This is the way
gas monkey builds them.
Casey did an awesome job
on the paint.
I mean,
it's exactly what we wanted.
We wanted to keep it clean
But keep it
with the look that it is.
This car's true to form.
If someone wanted to put it back
super stock, they could do that.
Otherwise,
we just gave it a badass look.
It's fast.
It's comfortable to drive.
It's an everyday car.
All in all,
really, really happy.
I think we turned out
a great car.
I think we turned it out
at an incredibly fast pace.
I don't think there's
anything that we have
to make excuses for.
I think it does everything
it's supposed to do.
Now all we got to do
is find this thing a home.
We've been working hard all week
trying to get this thing done.
My friend brandon,
he's a car collector.
He's coming by today.
Aaron says he's got a car
collection and a lot of money.
Those are
my two favorite things.
Maybe I can get
some of his money
And put a car in his collection.
Kaufman:
hey, what's up, bud? Hey.
Check out the '57.
Yeah, definitely, man.
You were telling me
about it.
Looks good, huh?
It does.
It looks real good.
Thanks.
So, brandon drives up, and
judging from his k*ller ride,
He's gonna love
this '88 oldsmobile.
What we got here?
Old '57, man,
brandon just finished up.
Cool, man.
Richard rawlings.
Hi, brandon.
Nice to meet you.
Brandon, how you doing?
Pretty awesome.
Thanks.
Right on.
You want to buy it?
I'm in the business
of selling.
You're in the business
of collecting.
He tells me you got,
like, all kinds of cars.
I got a couple.
See,
I need customers like you.
I'm like, "hey, man, I got
a little something cool myself."
This car's a two-owner
'50 oldsmobile.
Well, richard comes out
and shows me the 1950.
Been a big fan of them
for years.
This thing is not like a ford
or a chevy of the day.
This was a full-on racecar.
Where's the 303?
Uh, it was frozen.
Yeah?
Yeah, that --
it kind of hurt.
Some guys are just a stickler
for original.
I hope switching out the engine
Doesn't come up
to bite me in the a*s.
Basically, what we did was just
put in a 350 crate g.m. Motor,
You know, 700 r4 tr*nny,
beefed up all the brakes,
New wheels and tires,
Fixed a little bit
of the suspension work.
We just sanded it down
a little bit and cleared over.
I wanted it
to have that look
Like it's been
in a barn forever,
But I wanted you to be able
to drive this car every day
And hammer the [bleep]
out of it.
What are you trying
to get out of it?
Why don't we talk money
after I take it for a ride?
Sounds perfect.
Let's do it.
Get in.
Here's the way I look at it.
If you're gonna take it out
for a test-drive,
Let's go ahead and wreck this
piece of [bleep] if we have to.
I don't care.
[ Tires screeching ]
Bottom line is,
they might get scared.
They might get worried
or whatever.
But until
they've unlaid that cash...
It's still my car.
I don't care if I wreck it.
[ Tires screeching ]
Moossy:
once we started doing doughnuts
And I got thrown back
in the seat,
That's when I knew
I had to have it.
Whoo!
[ Tires screech ]
A little fast and loud
for you.
I like it.
Joyride works every time,
and this is a great car.
I paid 7 grand for it
originally,
Put in five hard days of labor
and some parts,
And I know exactly what I need
for this car.
What do you want for it?
I want 25 grand.
Yeah?
I think that's where
the car needs to be.
It's brand-new motor, tr*nny,
runs and drives great.
Interior's done,
paint's done.
This is a kick-a*s car.
Do I have air-ride on it
if I give you $25,000?
So, he tells me
he'll give me the whole 25 grand
Only if I put
the air-ride suspension in it.
I don't want to do that
to this car,
But if it'll help me
turn a profit...
[ Sighs ]
What do you think?
Man.
I know you're a buyer. I know
you got some kick-a*s cars.
Yeah, I'll do that.
All right, let's do it.
Go get my money, son.
All right, will do.
We're doing a little more work
to the car.
Brandon wants air-ride.
That's another 5 or 6 grand, but
we're still gonna turn a profit,
And brandon gets
the car he wants.
Hey, that's gonna take
me a while to count.
See, that's what I like
about you car guys.
You always got cash.
Looks like it's yours,
my man.
Hey, thanks, man.
Thank you, brandon.
Hey, congratulations, man.
It's gonna be a great addition
to my collection.
I can't wait to take it home.
Narrator: richard paid $7,000
for the 1950s oldsmobile.
Replacing the engine
and transmission
Cost an extra 4 grand.
He sold it for $25,000.
But it still needs
an air-ride suspension.
All told, gas monkey made
The '73 caddy work
was commissioned for $4,200.
After paying sue...
Not to mention the brake work...
And a little hospitality...
[ Machine-g*n fire ]
Richard cleared around $1,700.
And then there was
the '55 bel air.
$12,000.
[ Engine turns over,
engine revs ]
Rawlings:
I think don might be happy
about who's buying this car.
[ Laughs ]
Hey, I forget to tell you
that part. [ Laughs ]
And who knows?
Maybe brandon will
start a family of his
own in the backseat.
One more gas monkey
riding down the road.
Car's gone.
I got cash in the pocket.
The guys are paid.
Just another week at gas monkey.
I bet you're wondering
what happened to the aussies.
Let's take a look.
Guarantee you
they would've had a better time
If they'd had taken me along
Or if they'd have
just stayed in texas.
