16x15 - Travelall Around the World

Post by bunniefuu »

If your SUV had a grandparent it would
be this international harvester travel

don't worry if the name doesn't ring a
bell never seen one before it has charm

to spare I'm driving it with a
stupid grin but the interior is a retro

nightmare it's the shag pile headliner
and the engine needs rescuing this car

is a little bit too original for me
we're gonna have to put in some

overtime to get this car back on the
road I'm gonna have to prep it paint it

which means a late night for me this
vehicle can really really tell some stories.

last year almost half of all new cars
sold in America were SUVs they are an

inescapable part of the landscape
but the vehicle on my way to go and see

was at the forefront of starting this
whole genre for the auto industry it is.

1968 international harvester
travel international harvester is an

interesting company they had a bit of
a brainwave when they took what was a

truck chassis and they put an estate
car or a station wagon body on top but

they decided to call it the travel
all and that is where we get the

birth of the modern SUV and for
me that market right now is absolutely

booming everyone wants to get into an
old SUV particularly here where we are

you think about it I'm on the coast
and I'm on my way to go and see a car

that absolutely suits the coastline
perfectly for a number of reasons one

you can throw some surfboards in the
back and you your wet weather gear and

you can get out into the ocean and go
and have some fun but two there's so

much scenery around here and those
travelers got great big windows they're.

really good for throwing the family
and feeling nostalgic and going out there

and having a bit of fun it's one of
those cars I've always wanted to get to

because it's interesting now believe
it or not after chasing all over America

for one one's popped up almost
on their doorstep but in fact it is on

their doorstep belongs to a guy
called Chris and he's agreed to bring it

down to the shop and show me so
it means I don't have to put in loads

of miles you must be Chris nice to meet
you thank you so much for bringing the.

car down so I can see you've done
me a real favor so tell me about the car.

how long you've had it well I've
only had it a short time I bought it

because a gentleman in my neighborhood
was leaving town he needed the garage

space to clear out and I liked it
just by looking at it and I bought it.

I had never seen one either yeah
fantastic poor man's Woody it is a.

exactly like that and did you have the
intention of holding on to it and doing

some work to it or did you just think
I'll flip it you know what I wasn't sure

I thought maybe I'd flip it maybe
I'd keep it but I'm flipping it look at

that yeah and there's the evidence
of its previous life that yellow firewall

that color yeah that's why they
change it so tell me about the engine

does it pull well it's 52 years
old but it's it's not tired it runs

decent it's a 304 v8 and runs good
okay well I mean it looks like it's got a

barbecue stuff on the top of it for the
air cleaner divers helmet and there's a

few wet patches on top of the
engine but overall underneath it's nice

and straight tidy 68 was the only
year that they had the custom with

this trim so it's kind of unique it's
the last year of this body gotcha and

it's the only one with that trim that
is fantastic all period correct with the

knobs and dials does everything
work yeah everything works radio works

lights work well when this car was
launched in 1968 I don't think ever in

the options catalog was shagpile
carpet I think you're correct you know

your stuff in here mm-hmm nice
amount of space between the front and the

seat rip seat in the back so that any
repairing mm-hmm can't believe the size

of that rear glass massive glass it's
the only sort of rust spot on the car

little hole down here oh my god look
at the character around the back I love

these rear lights they're so nice
and the bumper and is this a electric

window got a power button up under
the steering wheel so it's an electric

window Chris I absolutely love it I
think it's so characterful but I won't know

do you mind if I take it for a test drive
have at it take it out lovely thank you.

I'm driving a 68
International Harvester travel

all I never thought I'd
experience this in my life.

it's ponderous and slow and rather unwieldy
but I absolutely love it it's brilliant but

the driving experience
isn't about what's

happening in here it's
about what's going on

out there there's a there's about the
third wave I've got from somebody here

on the beach driving alongside
the beach and the beach community

they uh oh there's
another one a nice little

thumbs up uh there's
people that are just smiling.

do you know what I bet they're thinking
what is that there is something so charming.

about this vehicle you know I always knew
on the outside it had bundles of character

but just being on the
inside of the way it's

driving it's so
characterful it's got super

light power steering Chris was very very
honest telling me the engine's got some

leaks and I can see it's a little bit wet
under the bonnet but what does concern me

is the stuff inside here because we've
got shagpole carpet on the ceiling I mean.

my first ever car in
56 years of being on

this planet with a shag
carpet on the ceiling

or an all although I think it's of a
period and it sort of works in a way.

I can't sell it like that I
need to get rid of that.

but this is definitely a
vehicle that puts a smile

on everyone's face I'm
driving it with a stupid

grin and if I didn't sell
it at the end of it this

would be one that Ashley
I'll be pleased to keep.

brilliant what do you
think you get some looks

didn't you what is it
look right exactly that

what is it yeah so I
know that there's going

to be a lot of people
wanting to buy something

like this it's so unusual
and out there it does

feel like an old truck
yeah it does it is a.

it really does everywhere
I look on the vehicle

though I need to pay
some attention to so the

interior right that does
need work the seats

are ripped the headline
has got to be changed

and then of course
there's elites coming from

the engine okay you want
fifteen thousand dollars

for it fifteen thousand
yes you're being a bit

cheeky yeah fifteen come
on where can you find

one like that I was
going to make you a really

good offer of fourteen
thousand dollars for it

another five hundred you can own it you're
right where am I going to find another one.

you got yourself a deal and I just
bought myself an international harvester

travelor and I never thought
I'd say those words fantastic.

how did you sneak this
massive SUV into the

workshop without me
knowing well morning mate

uh yes it was a little bit difficult
because it is the size of our workshop

it's massive uh this is
our 1968 international

harvester travelor what
is it with Americans and

massive SUVs this was built to compete with
the likes of the Chevy Suburban or the Jeep

Grand Wagoneer around
the same time it's designed

to just get people out
there enjoying the great

big outdoors it's
amazing isn't it I mean I'm

worried because there
is a lot of metal here.

oh don't worry so there's
gonna be rust no no

actually it's relatively
rust free but wait

till you see inside you go that
side I'll go this huh look at this.

it's like a spongy old
sofa this is I mean well

let me just go through
it let me just go through

it one at a time first
up at the seats yes they

are like a big couch
unfortunately the pads

on the bottom are good
but the material split

so we're gonna have
to find a way to cure that

the dashboard's all period correct
it's lovely it's got three on the tree

yeah I you know what I'm gonna be talking
about we can't linger we have to get that.

we get to it in a minute but the real
piece of resistance in this vehicle.

is the shag pile
headliner these are curtain

rails yeah so it just
needs like a chandelier.

it really does it is
something we definitely

have to get rid of
unfortunately oh this looks

nice though the power
steering is super light

it's so easy to to steer it needs to be it
does yeah because it's so big could you

imagine this in England
it just wouldn't work

well it'd be an accommodation it
would it'd be a free bedroom in Peckham.

exactly it's got a nice
strong engine it's a v8

I'm going to show you
it right now but uh it's

strong it's strong it's
got to move I mean what

is this way I couldn't
tell you the same as

three elephants it's
yellow I think it was a

school bus is that a
kettle that's a kettle.

that's doubling up as a
barbecue as a barbecue or

a diver's helmet okay
so the business end this is

one of those old cars
that's leaky it's got more

leaks in the wash
allotment honestly it has.

find me another one
have you ever seen another

one I've never seen
one before this is the first

one so therefore it's
rare straight out the

box all we need to do
is get it on the ramp and

fix it on the ramp do you reckon it's
gonna go on the ramp oh let me just uh

you just uh I reckon I
reckon we're gonna need

a bigger ramp we are
gonna need a bigger ramp

I think yeah definitely look at it this
vehicle is absolutely massive I mean I could

pretty much get four
grown men and have a

picnic in the back of here and that's because
the chassis of this vehicle comes from

agricultural heritage
huge vehicles gas tankers.

even armored cars
and then somebody at

international said I
know let's make a family.

vehicle and then mums and dads put kids in
this seat here and went on huge road trips

could you imagine being a kid in the UK
when I was a kid I mean nothing like this

existed this is epic are we there yet
and then of course there's going to be

loads of people that
criticize the way this car

looks they're going to
say it's kind of awkward

looking she even starts
up well I don't think

this is an awkward
looking car I actually think

this is beautiful and
what's amazing I've worked

on loads of cars but this is the very very
first time that I've seen a travel in the

flesh and finally I get
to put my hands on one.

but while it's easy to get excited about
finally working on a travel I need to be

professional I need
to focus on the work

ahead and for me that
work starts under there.

you know what this
1968 travel is on the face

of it if you ignore
the interior of course

in pretty good shape see what the
market is really crying out for right now.

is cars that are original
and it is very original.

another thing the market
is looking for is reliability.

in which case this car is a
little bit too original for me.

planning ahead I'm first
draining the cooling system.

now if I'm looking past the oil leaks
looking past the leaky heater control valve

looking past the snapped
off air return line and

looking past the leaky
valve covers for a second.

I'm first drawn to the
distributor because

on this car it runs the
original point system

and as it's screaming
out for reliability I'm

going to change it to
an electronic ignition.

after disconnecting the
battery the first job I'm

going to do is set the
engine to top dead center.

I won't need this coil.

these leads they're
getting swapped out too.

underneath this distributor
cap are the points.

now it's much easier to
see when it's outside the car.

see as the engine rotates a cam inside
the engine touches against this gear here

rotating it and of course it then
rotates the rotor arm up there

this coil here delivers
a massive voltage to

the rotor and as the
rotor spins it contacts

against these little
metal points inside

the distributor cap
the voltage then travels

down the ht lead to the spark plug where it
creates a spark right inside the cylinder.

now this single unit
replaces the need for all

these components I
don't need a coil because

the coil is actually
hidden right under there

now as you can see
the new distributor is

pretty huge compared
to the old one now

unfortunately this is
not a like-for-like swap

in fact it's so big
that if I tried to fit it

now it would foul the
thermostat housing here.

but I've got a trick to remedy that.

first I need to remove this single
bolt hole because it's not necessary.

then a quick clean up
with a wet blast cabinet

to remove years of
grime and it will also give

the engine enamel a
good surface to adhere to

making sure it properly
protects the metal.

now with the paint dry a couple of new
gaskets and of course a new thermostat.

this is going to be snug
but it's all going to fit nicely.

it's essential the leads are installed
in the correct orientation and order

the engine relies on
the correct firing order

to run get a lead in the
wrong place and you're.

going to have a problem
now at this stage I'm

only going to plug the
leads onto the spark.

plugs and not the distributor
because they're going

to get in the way of
those leaky valve covers.

tackling a leaky valve cover is a
simple job that you can do at home

and it's super common
particularly on old cars like this.

now the chosen gasket
material in 1968 was

cork and this is not
in fact this is rubber.

which means someone's
been here before a gasket

is only as good as the
surfaces between which it

sits I'm making sure the face of the head
is clean and free of any damage or debris.

now though I've now got a
choice of gaskets I have elected

to go back to cork why
because it works really well.

one done.

now the key to getting a cork gasket
to seal correctly and avoid a puddle of

underneath the car is to not tighten it too
much just a few more things to button up.

hey hey how you doing
buddy today's an exciting

day come and see that
powder patch repair that.

you haven't done I
told you to do the patch

repair you said it would
take you five minutes

why haven't you done it no no you said it
would take a couple of minutes not me it's

probably true I did
say that but it will only

take you a couple of
minutes you've got your

world and stuff you're
good at that yeah but

I'm focusing under the
bonnet at the moment

okay well listen give
me a little chip of paint

because I'll go and
do the colour match I'm.

excited about that I
don't have one okay well

let me take something
then let's uh let's take

that door shall we not taking the door let
me take the bonnet I mean that's even more

ridiculous why would
you take a bonnet let's

take the tailgate how
about I find the smallest

thing yes and you make
you a cup of tea why is

it always I'm reducing
the tea boy take a door.

oh see that's appropriate isn't
it that's lovely nice cup of tea

that's gonna be great yeah I
can colour match the paint to this.

and you're gonna take the door off silly.

this goes back on here.

and distributors are
finally timed to the engine.

so I'm gonna set that
timing up using a timing g*n.

the fuel air mixture
has to be ignited by the

spark plug at exactly
the right time in the

cylinder what I'm doing here is adjusting
very slightly when that spark happens

until it's just right
that is all the jobs in

the engine bay done
now this isn't one of those

builds where you tackle
every single blemish

and that's because it's
a good honest car my job

was to merely make a
reliable and efficient you

know if the new owner
wants to take the engine out.

so be it.

rust now if this car was
in England it would for

sure be way worse
and it's not like California

hasn't got its problems the only difference
is the environment is just way warmer here

so water doesn't get an
opportunity to sit around for so long.

so you get less bits of damage like this.

to be fair though I
mean this is a car of

the 60s and it's huge
there's loads of metal

everywhere and if this is the only bit of
corrosion I'll probably take it problem is

though it looks small
on the outside and

there is only one way to investigate
how deep and how far that goes.

rust repairs can be
a frustrating process

it's not glamorous and
it's sometimes not easy

especially if there are
curves and corners involved.

you know what we
have got incredibly lucky

as soon as I started
removing the paint I was

expecting to see a big
load of rust but actually

it got to strong solid
metal quite quickly

and even better is the rust hasn't
gone into the corner of the panel

it exists only within
the flat part of the

panel and repairing
flat panels that's easy.

first I need to find a metal of similar
thickness to the car's original bodywork.

I then need to make it slightly
larger than the area to be repaired.

now because that
rust hole is so small I've

actually elected to
make the fill-in panel first.

and then by drawing around it it
tells me exactly where I need to cut.

like a piece of a puzzle
at this stage there's

only a couple of bits
of equipment I need

this four and a half inch grinder
is absolutely perfect and I love the

fact that it's battery powered so
there's no cord that gets in the way.

attacking any car's bodywork with
a grinder is not for the faint of heart.

but getting rid of the
corroded metal is the

only way to stop the
rust from spreading.

now if I make use of a
magnet mount my new panel.

drop that in the hole
huh look at that right

well done now MIG
stands for metal inert gas.

now the metal bit's
obvious but the inert gas

is inside here there is a
co2 and argon mix and

that comes out of
here in fact if I press the

trigger take a piece of
the same metal you're

going to weld as a test piece and keep
laying weld onto it until it sounds right.

an old metal guy I used to know he taught
me when it sounds like sizzling bacon.

that is it perfect.

welding obviously
generates a lot of heat I mean

it's melting metal that
happens at about 1600

degrees celsius I have
to watch that I don't

put too much heat into
the surrounding body work

if I do then things can start to warp
and it can make more of a mess.

this is called stitch welding it gives the
metal the best chance of staying stable and

not bending out of shape now that the panel
is welded into place I need to level the.

surface so there'll be
no evidence of the repair.

I'm taking down the bulk of the
welds using a grinder with a coarse pad.

then a da for a more even
and smooth surface finish.

there it is see now it's
structurally sound but I'm

still not done a thin
skin of body panel repair.

no it's not a crime to
use filler on a repair.

it's what it's designed to do as
long as it's only in thin amounts.

the idea is is that after primer and
paint the panel needs to look like

I was never there a flat
block like this wrapped

in fine abrasive paper
is perfect for taking

off the excess filler
the fact the panel is

also flat means I won't
risk the final surface

having any lumps or bumps in it.

now that is done in fact you can hardly
see where the patch repair was at all.

after that's had a nice
layer of primer and

of course Mike comes
back to the match paint.

it's going to look like new.

look at this place this is cool isn't
it now I have no doubt in my mind.

that ant is going to fix that
little patch repair on our travel

and he's going to do
it quite quickly now the

problem I've got is that
car has been painted

once before in its lifetime
and it's not an original

color so there's no
paint code to match it to

so that causes a problem so what I
got and to do is to take this panel off

and then with this
panel I can bring it to my

friend Yuri who's got
this shot it's brilliant

and he is going to
color match this and give

me paint in a rattle can
and that means I can

go back and tidy it up
really quickly and make

the car much more
sellable let's go meet him.

Yuri how are you bud
how are you I'm all right

yeah good to see you
again how you been very.

good this is what I
was talking about do you

reckon you could do
anything off of this yeah I

think so you can yeah
right so what do we do

then let's pull some
chips out here and see

how close we can get
there's a few different

selections of sort of
your off whites here

there's thousands of
whites there's thousands

of whites I mean
it's infinite really yeah

there you go that one at
the moment that's quite

good let's um leave
that one out but let's take

a look at some others
so another book so it's

a different tone of white in another book
now that's good look at that one yeah oh

that's really close
isn't it it is yeah that's.

wonderful so that's
two we've got um is that

enough now let's do
one more yet another big

book of whites kind
of like in this one yeah

that's good what do
we do next now we're

this is cool hey Wilson
um we got Mike here nice

to meet you we're gonna
make some paint to uh

help him fix his
international right lovely

okay there you go down
to three that we've got

you've got that code you put the code
what into the computer and it tells you

how much you need to measure out it's
very precise down to the tenth of a gram

tenth of a gram right okay no yellow it
tells you white black yellow red yellow

see i can't see any red are you doing
this one which one you're doing this one

yeah so look at that
color so i can't i can't

see any red in there
yeah but it's in there

isn't it in there yeah
and that's that's the

mix yeah yeah that's
amazing and it will also

look different when
it's dry when it's dry and

it shoots out the can
yeah so there's one of

them so this one's white
black and yellow hasn't

got the other yellow
and the red so you can

see that there's a
difference already less

toners in this one yes right moving
on to the last one just one more.

so that's it we've got
our three that's it we

got our three colors
Wilson thank you very much

fantastic job so where do we go next we're
going to go to production and get these

pumped in aerosols go for it hi Robert
this is Mike Robert nice to meet you.

nice to meet you now
I've never seen anything

go into an aerosol can
before this would be

first time for me yes so
how does it work hands

are already pressurized
we're only adding color

oh gotcha okay it's it's
a pneumatic system puts

the can in yeah closes
that there's a piston

in there that forces the paint into the can
through the same hole that it sprays out oh

really yes look at that
fantastic and there's

our colors are we gonna
try them out see if they

match our panel yep
we're gonna go spray some

cards uh test the colors and go
from there lovely lead the way.

so Yuri what are these
these are spray-out cards

so these represent
various shades of primer i

got it for white it's
going to most likely be

over light gray or
white but it'll give you

the idea of how they
affect how the paint

looks over the the
different shades fantastic

at least it's going to give us a proper
look of what it's going to be like so just.

simply spray it on just spray it on.

right so we got to wait
for those to flash off

and dry uh you got a
kettle of course cup of tea

lovely they do look great i can't believe
how different they all are as well you know

they all look so close
when you're mixing them

up but let's see what
they look like against

my little panel that's
close isn't it yeah it's

pretty close this one
yeah that's very good

as well yeah i could definitely paint
with that but my eyes are pretty close

already been drawn to
this one yeah that one

looks the best to me
I'll have a can of w 101

please you got it thank
you very much isn't

that just fantastic
coming here going through

the swatches choosing
the right color getting

it mixed down so it's
absolutely accurate and

then seeing it being put into a can first
time in my life now i can go back with that

fresh can and a touch-up
stick and i hope to

sneak into the workshop
and get that painted

on the car before and even
notices it's going to be brilliant.

now I've gone and gotten my custom
color match paint it's time to show

and i too can get my hands dirty
and pitch in on this mammoth machine.

a coat of primer will help
the paint adhere to the body.

but after spraying you need to level it
out so the surface is nice and smooth.

these old cars have a
single stage paint with no

clear coat so once the
color coat is on it's all

done that is absolutely
fantastic you know

what when that arrives
he's not even gonna know

I've been there look
at the state of this

carpet now this definitely
has to be swapped

out this end is held on by this trim a
couple of screws and it comes right off.

carpets aren't just fitted
for luxurious purposes

they actually act as a
really good sound barrier as

well and if you've ever
driven an old car like

an old Land Rover
that doesn't have carpet

probably has rubber mats you'll
know exactly what i'm talking about.

perfect now the other benefit of
carpet is it acts as heat insulation.

because this is after all a big
metal box with a greenhouse on top.

now that i have the
loose carpets out i have to

start attacking the
carpets that are attached

to the floors in order to do that i first
have to take out the seats but this is no

small sports car this is a
monolithic international traveler.

because means heavy
seats and these things are

boat anchors that feel
like they account for

nearly two-thirds of
the car's dry weight that

being said there's no
way around it they must.

come out pulling up
half a century old carpets

also reveals seemingly
half a century worth of.

dirt and grime filthy but once the carpet's
out that's not it there's also the leftover

insulation that needs
to come out fortunately

it's no cleaner than
the carpet pulling up the

carpet has got rid of
most the insulation but

to get rid of the rest
the little bits is this.

the flame makes light work of
the fluffy insulation i suppose

fireproofing wasn't a priority back
in the 60s so it burns off really nicely.

right that's got the bulk of it off.

and to get the rest off a bit of a wire
brush attached from on the edge of a drill.

now for the final
cleanup of all the debris

it's important that
you get all of it out or

risk the carpet and insulation having
areas that aren't getting full adhesion

leading to lifted bunching
carpets and no one wants that.

I've got some sound deadening
left over from a previous build.

which is going to work perfectly in here.

insulation has come
a long way since the

1960s it's no longer
made from wool and foam

this new sound
deadening material is lighter

thinner and can even
provide thermal insulation.

when you consider the
big metal body in a car

is effectively like a
drum skin it makes a lot

of noise by putting
sound deadening on it you

soften that noise that's
because this stuff's

really thick really tarry
it deadens the sound

the installation of this
insulation couldn't be

easier just stick and
roll and just like that

your 50 year old car is
insulated for the century.

now this carpet is actually molded
to fit the shape and contour of the car

if you try and do this with a bit of flat
carpet to get around the shapes and curves

is going to be pretty impossible in fact
the only cutting i'm going to have to do

is to cut out for the seat
belts wow this is so much

better and i love the fact
that Mike chose brown period.

the rear of this car is
nice and simple because

it's flat no strange curves to contend with
but you do have to be handy with a knife.

aftermarket kit of any kind usually requires
some finessing to get it to fit right

be it bumpers bright
work or in this case

interior carpet sometimes
it's not worth your

time to go aftermarket
but this kit only required

a minimal amount of
cutting to get it to fit just

right to be honest on
the interior the hardest

bit is actually getting
the seats in and out

because they're so heavy i'm going
to leave them out for the next bit.

well the carpet on the ceiling is way
more carpety than the carpet on the floor

i think this is what they call a
shag pile it's blooming awful.

while the shag carpeting
might have been all the

rage in the late 60s it
never had any place in an

automobile and even
if you want to argue that

it did this particular
dingy dirty carpet just

has to go i mean who
puts carpet on a roof

speaking of roofs this
wood paneling isn't much.

better than the carpet
the whole combination

reeks of grandad's basement
and not in a good way.

like layers of an onion i keep peeling more
and more of it away only to find more and

more work for myself
i can't believe it and

this is another classic
Mike brewer stitch up

see hidden under the shag pile carpet the
car's yellow i can't leave it yellow which

means i'm gonna have
to prep it and paint it

which means a late
night for me and then of

course i need to fit the headliner
but this was never a full restoration.

this is quite a humble car it's
very honest it just needs reviving.

large suvs have become
synonymous with america

so it goes to follow
that it doesn't get much

more American than this 1968 international
harvester travel all ponderous and slow and

rather unwieldy but i
absolutely love it but

before we throw the
kids in the back for a trip

down to the shore what
is it with Americans and

massive suvs this massive
monolith needed to be

brought into the 21st
century the shag pile

headliner it just needs
like a chandelier to

make it more reliable
and installed an electronic

ignition system solved
its engine leaks and work

wonders on the interior
whilst i got my hands

dirty with the paint
now we're left wondering

was it all worth it the travel all cost us
fourteen thousand five hundred dollars

new ignition 505
thermostat housing 41 fresh

leads gaskets and hoses
278 custom paint 79.

carpet 691 seat covers 382 headliner
330 for a grand total of sixteen thousand

eight hundred and six
dollars or around twelve

thousand seven hundred
pounds in 28 man hours.

now that we've done the work it's time
to reap the benefits out on the open road

luckily for us there's
miles and miles of

beauty practically on
our doorstep the great

outdoors what better way to take in america
than this out in the countryside with an

international harvested
travel all the car just

looks right here the
colors are perfect the

stance is perfect i like the job on the new
mirror thank you very much yeah the mirrors

weren't that hard to
get but seeing how good

that patch repair was because you've done
an amazing job you put the paint on this

car don't you it was
easy yeah it's and it's

not something to be
fearful of if you get the

right rattle can i'm quite
impressed hey check

the inside look at this oh look at that it
looks amazing that carpet is lovely and the

seat covers are great hey you've done the
headliner as well but what's it drive like

well i'd like to find out i
mean i can sniff a road trip.

this is like a massive
slice of americana it

is in fact this is really
weird because I've

seen pictures of an
international traveler before

never seen one in the
flesh I've always wanted

to chase one of
these they're the sort of

great great granddaddy
of the whole SUV world

which now is the
biggest selling car market

this vehicle it was once
a school bus so you

can imagine a load of
smiling kids sat in the

back of this looking at
these great big windows

at big america as it
rolls past the windows

yeah but they see the
yellow wasn't just in the

bulkhead and the engine bay took the carpet
up the whole floor was yellow yeah and this

whole section around here whenever i moved
that shag park carpet it was yellow as well

that's another brew
i'm sorry about that

but i did get the uh
the color match pain so

come on be fair I've made
the job a little bit easier for you.

it feels perkier yeah that right word it
fired up on the page exactly the right word

engine sounds good
it feels good under my

right foot oh it sounds
lovely that's not my

accent you see this
car i have to admit this

wasn't the hardest build
that you've ever given

really i know and i
hate to say that because

i like to be challenged
what have you done to.

it well first and foremost
you mentioned oil

leaks yeah sorry about
that well yeah i mean

if you ever bring the
car doesn't have an oil

leak I'll be checking your
temperature yes i it's time to worry.

this car represents
everything i love about

america yeah it's big
it's bold it's beautiful

it it certainly is i
mean this is a slice

of americana that I've
really really enjoyed

yeah you couldn't
imagine this here it makes

sense the roads are
huge you can go on long

distance journeys but can you imagine
this in the victorian streets of england.

hey it just wouldn't work
would it it just wouldn't work.

do you know what I've loved being out with
you today doing this sucking in big country

looking at the scenery look at it look
at it just looking at these big windows

that is amazing look
at it there you go okay

dad dad drive drive keep
quiet in the back there

there yeah pipe down please
if i have to come back there.

it's international by the way oh is
it really I've got it now oh man look

can you imagine if this car existed in
my childhood it'd be brilliant oh my gosh

is it you know that you know i got three
brothers and a sister it would have been

that answered family
vehicle drive dad drive

keep actually i should
be saying granddad.

oh my god this car is so
huge i can literally transition.

yeah you can there's
not many cars you can

actually have a lap
around on the inside of it.

does the hulu dancer stay with the car
big question she is absolutely 100 percent

whoever removes her i want her sent
back to me oh man this has been great.

now when i bought this traveler it looked
every one of its 52 years of age but now.

has tied it up the
outside with a little bit of

help from me and i
tied it up the inside with.

a little bit of help from
him we now have a

travel ore that we can
be proud of i advertised

it out there for eighteen
thousand dollars that's

fourteen thousand pounds
in an SUV market that is

absolutely booming
people want these classic

suvs and i sold it
within an hour of listing it

and i sold it to somebody
who lives clean the

other side of america
and america is a very big

place now as much as
i'd like to be behind the

wheel looking at these
big windows and taking in

america i put it on the trailer and it's
being delivered to its new customer

right now he's going
to enjoy it every single

minute behind the wheel
of this as much as we

had if you want to
see more cars like this

being turned around by me and aunt
join us again soon on Wheeler dealers.
